Trudy Lives AU: Spider's Hair
We all know hair is super important to the Na'vi in general, but I think it's doubly important to Spider because his hair represents his connection and wanting to belong to the Omaticaya.
Obviously with Trudy being Spider's mom, he doesn't have as strong abandonment and self-esteem issues as he does in canon. I think he would still have some because obviously kids feel a lot and notice a lot even if adults don't specifically say anything. Plus he just loves Na'vi culture so he would still want to belong.
Trudy notices this desire from him early on as a kid when he freaks out whenever someone tries to give him a haircut and how he holes up and cries afterwards on the rare times someone succeeded. She hadn't understood the first few times until he saw him stare at Lo'ak's braids and queue when the kids came to the lab to visit him and Grace and touched the short ends of his own hair with something like shame.
From then on, she stopped letting anyone give the kid a haircut. If he wanted his hair long like the Na'vi, he could have it long, what right did they have to stop him. He's already having a tough time as it is being a human born on this planet, a person torn between both races and cultures, an orphan of such a bloody conflict. So she just lets him be; what's most important to her is his happiness after all.
I'd imaging in the short time he's with the McCoskers in this AU, they tried to humanize him a bit, which is another part of Trudy chewing them out and taking him in herself because they can clearly see how miserable it makes the kid and still insist on it as if short or long hair is such a big deal or end-all, be-all.
Obviously his curly hair starts getting tangled and unruly and tangled though and Trudy doesn't have much experience dealing with his hair type. So she scrounges up some old youtube videos maybe or talks to one of the remaining scientists who DOES have curly hair for tips and tricks. If there is a scientist left with curly hair (which I'm just gonna say yes there is), I'd imagine she has figured out what natural plants she can use to take care of her hair in the years she's been there, so she helps Trudy out with that. So Trudy takes care of his curls for him, but also finds herself trying out different hairstyles on him.
Like I mentioned in a previous AU post, Trudy learns to braid for him so he can feel included in Omaticaya culture (and it also frankly helps her deal with his curly hair). But none of this matted loc nonsense for Spider this time around, not while she's alive and in charge of his cleanliness and hair. When his hair isn't in a protective hairstyle, she tries out a lot of different styles on him, and it ends up being something she really enjoys doing. It's good mother-son bonding time for the two of them as well because he'll like sit between her knees on the floor and talk to her about his day or something in a very relaxed setting while she works on his hair and he loves her motherly touch on his scalp (because again he still has touch starvation issues). She does a lot of hairstyles on him that like Earth people might consider girly but he loves them and thinks he's an icon. She does stuff like french braids, dutch braids, waterfall braids, fishtail braids when she dries his hair straight. She's definitely given him a braid crown before, and Tuk went gaga over it and begged Trudy to do one to her too.
She basically switches between protective hairstyles, full on big braids to keep his hair out of his face, and letting his hair go curly. Because his hair is so well taken care of now, I'd imagine that Omaticaya kids an adults see his golden braids and curls and like kind of break the ice there is between him and them and approach him to touch his hair or ask about his braids.
Also, Spider 100% learns to braid and insists on braiding Trudy's hair every once in a while because he insists she has nice hair and it's a waste for it to just be put up in a ponytail all the time. So he gets really good with hair, and starts braiding some of the Omaticaya's hair when they ask like on special occasions if they want waterfall braids or a braid crown; it gives him a role in the village that he didn't really have before and he loves it. Not all the animosity held towards him goes away with this obviously, but no one can deny that the boy is talented. I'd like to say even Mo'at gives his skills a go one time when she notices him staring at her hair repeatedly for a week preceding some sort of big Na'vi celebration and relents to him.
Anyway, yeah hehe, I just want to talk about little things like this that improve in Spider's life under Trudy's care.

Well, I was gonna take longer on this post, but I went to reblog something today and came to the frankly startling realization that some of you clowns already have me blocked? Babes, I haven’t done anything yet. At least let me do something first.
Anyways, here’s why there isn’t any moral greyness in the Avatar franchise villains, you guys are just horny:
I know I said it a bajillion times on this blog, but the point of Avatar is to make a direct statement on colonialism, genocide, and ecological harm. It touches all these interconnected themes; militarism, imperialism, racism, colorism, and it comes at them in a way that is supposed to give you an unbiased view of this. We are not watching a movie about Earth and about the genocide of our indigenous peoples because a lot of people already have preconceived notions about these topics. Please see my lovely studious deracination post for more detail, but essentially; Sometimes it’s easier to approach these issues when you (white people) don’t feel like they are targeting you (white people).
You are supposed to sympathize with the Na’vi. You are supposed to see things from their perspective, and maybe gain the ability to understand the complexity and harm that caused by all these big themes I mentioned above. A prevalent theme in The Way of Water is this long lasting trauma felt in these communities, especially displayed in Neytiri and her subsequent treatment of Spider. You are supposed to See, understand? That is moral greyness, something you the viewer knows that is wrong in a protagonist character, but you understand why and how they ended up there. You are torn.
And sometimes, the way you read or view a narrative that employs studious deracination allows you to look at yourself and your own biases more. Basically what I’m saying is sympathizing more with the recoms and Quaritch is more of a you thing, guys.
I’ll say this again, there is nothing wrong with finding them hot, villains are fun. I am a huge fan of Quaritch in the first movie, especially the scenes where he holds his breath to shoot at Trudy’s Sampson. He’s a great villain! But he is not redeemable. Quaritch not only is our main representation for all the genocide, colonialism, imperialism, and racism present in the themes and inspiration behind the script, but he also doesn’t do anything to deserve redemption?
For real world issues such as the ones Quaritch represents, there should be direct addresses and attempts to unlearn behaviors and make amends in order to redeem that character without presenting those issues as non-issues. Think Zuko in A:TLA. Direct amends, directly addressed, and no one has ever excuses his actions because he is the first to condemn them. What people think makes Quartich redeemable is being (questionably) nice to his son. That is entirely unrelated to what he needs to be redeemed for, and is therefore not relevant. Not to mention the mountains of Stockholm Syndrome, trauma, damage, and harm he actually did to that kid, but oh well. Don’t get me started on Quartich’s Lima Syndrome.
He still kidnaps and tries to kill many innocent children (even unrelated children, he didn’t know who the Sully’s were at first just random Na’vi kids and a human that he also kidnaps before knowing him, and he takes Tsireya captive at the end too) just to get to their dad, kidnaps Spider and takes him to be tortured (yes that’s his fault), manipulates Spider into helping the recoms (telling him he can stay and be tortured or come with them is not a choice, that is a manipulation tactic), kills the ilu to torture the Ta’unui, has the tulkun killed and displayed specifically to bait Jake and the Metkayina into a war, burns down the Ta’unui village, and tries to kill the Tsahík of the Ta’unui (important to note he had to have learned what a Tsahík was likely from Spider to have used to term, knew what she was to the clan and how important she was and choose her to target) and only didn’t because Spider begged for her life. I feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but guys. If he doesn’t kill a defenseless and random unrelated woman just because his own kid asks him not to, thats actually not good! It’s not a good reason! That’s not developing a moral compass actually! We can say all we want that old human Quaritch wouldn’t have stopped because of Spider: you don’t fucking know! Dude could have loved his kid so much and that was his whole driving reason to burn Hometree to the ground, so he could make it all nice for his kid. It actually just doesn’t make it okay or redeemable. It’s not morally grey, his morals are clear. He does not feel bad for what he’s done, that’s clear. Bad people can also like their kids, and also have slutty waists.
For the other recoms, I hope I do not have to explain that not a single one of them does a single thing to even suggest they could be redeemed. The fact that they were brought back does not bode well for their records. Lyle Wainfleet has now killed two named Avatar characters, he killed Seze in Avatar as well as Neteyam. Dude was pissed when Trudy didn’t let him help shoot at Hometree lol. The military industrial complex doesn’t need ur help with their image lol.
Again, go crazy go stupid for them all. But let’s remember the point of this whole thing here. The military genocide boys are not getting redeemed in Avatar, guys, and they are certainly not raising that kid.
#at least the billy stans let me do stuff before putting me on that blocklist#which was still incredibly funny#i reblogged it :)#i was gonna stay chill until we made it to 1k before i made the targeted decision to loose followers but oh well#needs must#and i really enjoy a good genocide villain discussion post#i find this redemption trend very sus and fascinating#white male villains get so much slack and its so so suspect#the people that asked for this post: i hope it's what u wanted besties#miles quaritch#lyle wainfleet#recoms#is he babygirl or did he just commit a warcrime??/#he can't babygirl his way out of this one!#miles spider socorro#tsireya#jake sully#trudy chacon#spider socorro#neytiri sully#avatar#avatar the way of water#james cameron avatar#melissa og#melissa on avatar (cameron)#melissa does discourse#melissa is an english major

Trudy literally manhandling Cathy and being 300 steps ahead of poor Mouch is so in character. Good thing at least one of the two is quick enough to think on their feet* 😂
*remember when Mouch told her in 3x09 that they were perfect for each other because she could take the decisions he could not? He wasn't wrong!

Love, Bad Decisions, Cocaine, and Angst from Brother's Keeper to Freefall
Here before you lies the entirety of all my Miami Vice fiction, compiled in one place! The Sonny/Rico fics follow the series from beginning to end, and are intended to be a reasonably canon-compliant explanation of their relationship, tied to specific episodes. There's also two Gina/Trudy fics and one Switek/Zito fic; the implication is they take place concurrently. (Yes, everyone on Vice squad is queer. No, I don't care that that implies some very strange things are happening in the Miami PD hiring department.) Pretty much all fics contain angst, language, internalized homophobia, and period typical attitudes, but the series ends happily as a whole! Rating beside title.
Sonny/Rico Fics:
Ashes in a Goldfish Bowl - M - S1E19 Made for Each Other - Sonny contemplates a growing and awkward crush on his coworker.
Gas Station Confessional - M - S1E22 Evan - As he learns about Evan Freed, Rico pieces together that Sonny may be hiding more than he's letting on.
Unnecessary Medicine - M - S2E5 & 8 The Dutch Oven & Tale of the Goat - Sonny is dosed with cocaine; later, Rico is dosed with tetrodotoxin. They take care of one another.
Adventures in Microwave Sales - E - S2E9 Bushido - In the aftermath of Jack Gretzky, Sonny decides life is too short not to take Rico up on his offer to be friends with benefits.
Faults and Hairline Fractures - E - S3E12 Down for the Count - After their friend's death, Rico notices that Sonny seems uncharacteristically upbeat after months of brooding.
The Naming of Cats - E - S4E3 Death and the Lady - Sonny lets his guard down while he and Rico take care of a kitten for Gina, and hates himself for it.
Wise Men Say, "Only Fools..." - M - S4E8 Like a Hurricane - After Sonny's wedding, Rico makes a series of bad decisions.
Playing House - M - S4E20 A Bullet for Crockett - With Rico taking care of him after being shot, Sonny chafes against the constraints of his marriage, and questions his choices.
Repossession - M - S5E12 Jack of All Trades (or around there) - Rico is incredibly concerned and hurt as an increasingly depressed and listless Sonny gets very drunk at an auction.
Take Me Home - E S5E18 Freefall - If Sonny and Rico have any hope of moving on together, they need to push past five years of refusing to communicate and be honest with one another.
And Life Goes on Beside the Palisades - T - Post-series - Crossover with Wiseguy - Sonny and Rico have settled into their life together in New York. A chance encounter with another pair of ex-agents gives everyone an opportunity to reflect on where they want to go from here.
Trudy/Gina:
Not Like a Painting - T - S2E8 Tale of the Goat (or around there) - Trudy suggests playing hooky, and wonders if Gina knows she's acting like they're on a date.
Warfarin, Eggs, and Chase & Sanborn - E - S2E9 Bushido - Gina worries that Trudy might not return her attraction, and they find out where they stand during a series of all-nighters.
Stan/Larry:
Wearin' That Loved On Look - E - Late S1/Early S2 - Larry tries not to think too hard about what happens sometimes in the Bug Van.

IDW stans be like: Is this Whisper.jpg
So making yesterday's post about Trudy's official proportions, and mentioning the bit at the end about how it was an early idea during the design process to give her a cape reaching below the knees, reminded me of this very old and VERY crude doodle I had lying around that was brought into existence mainly out of personal interest to test how a cape could have potentially worked for her and how it would look when open and closed, with the bandana being on facial duty so as to not clutter it. If you can't tell (cause bad art), the purple oval in the center is meant to be a brooch of sorts: I went with purple because it's a cool colour like blue and green, as opposed to red/orange/etc.
You can tell this is old because the whip doesn't have a rapier guard for the handle lol. Like I said in the other post, I still think the idea is cute for her conceptually, since it kinda suits her blend of half-elegant/half-eccentric as far as her fashion sense goes. Maybe she has it somewhere in the castle.

Season 3 Episode 6
⚠️⚠️ S3 Spoilers! ⚠️⚠️
I honestly did not remember how bad the fight scene between Jayme and Ben was. Ben was literally going to kill her, just to win. And Pogo was trying to stop it, but Reg was like, no. That's not how it is in the real world.
And Reggie and Pogo fighting? It seems to be that Pogo knows about project Oblivion (watching this as I go and I seem to not remember much about some of this). Them fighting in the first place is crazy. I mean, Pogo is literally like a son to him.
The guy saying "Time to go home to Mommy, Lil guy" is so crazy 😭
That is such a sibling thing to do. To call your sister out on "keeping them up all night." And that the bed squeaks. And then giggle 😭
Oh boy. Diego is about to lose his finger.
Oh, just kidding, back to Viktor and Harlan. Oh boy. Allsion is protective. I get that, I see that. But last episode if she didn't rumor Luther, maybe I wouldn't be looking at this as if Allsion is so manipulative and selfish.
"What's your game?"
"Big fan of Yahtzee." Okay Luther 😭 "You know, old ben would have laughed at that joke."
And Luther calling Ben the best of them 🥺
And Luther going on a rant about how umbrella Ben could still be inside of him, and Ben says "Oh here we go. The whole nature vs. nurture argument." But it really is exactly that. Nature and nurture.
Okay, so Pogo said "you can't send them to the other side" at the beginning in the argument with Reggie. And now he's acting like he doesn't know, just says that Reggie calls it "project Oblivion." And maybe he's just hesitant to tell the random kid everything, but... idk.
But here's Diego. About to ring the bell. And here's Lila. Accidentally spewing that Trudy is Stanley's real mom.
And here's Five ready to complete the loop. And saying the destiny doesn't care if he's ready or for sure or not.
And Allison talking to Ray... it's moments like these that make me feel bad for her.
And we learn that it's called marigold. Or that's what Harlan calls it. And Harlan finally doesn't have those powers anymore. Woohoo!
"Are you insane?!" Umm... Diego...
"We met in an asylum." What lila said.
Ah shoot. And here's Harlan accidently telling Allison that he's the one who killed the moms. Whoopsie. Guess she's going to kill him now.
Ah frick and Diego rung the bell. It literally says not to, you idiot. God. Now you're going to lose a finger.
Oh, it's 2 fingers...
This is fun! Um... Hey Stan. Bye Stan. I'm really going to miss you. That's terrible. Take away the one good thing all show.
Ah frick and Luther actually joined the sparrows??? I didn't remember that. Genuinely thought he didn't. I really needed this rewatch.
The gifs!

any ideas in the Trudy Lives AU for when Spider gets taken by the recoms? her reaction? what she tells the sully’s when they admit that he was with them when he got captured? what she’d do after in the following months, planning, etc, and finally her seeing him again? sorry if this is a bit much, I am just very invested in what you’ve created.
YES thank you for asking!
I have actually been thinking about this for the past two days. I'm still not entirely sure sure about how it would go down, BUT! Here are my thoughts so far!
So I think it would actually happen on a day Trudy is like preoccupied with something back at High Camp. She'd had a bit of a bad feeling in her gut that day, but had elected to ignore it. The raid had gone well after all, and things were generally in their favor.
But then the Sully's come back frantic, Kiri is crying, and her blond little son (though not so little anymore) is nowhere to be seen.
Jake wants to leave right then and there to protect the clan, but Trudy forces him to stay to get a proper explanation out of him. He's trying to quickly say what happened but Kiri interrupts him and says they took him, the RDA has him.
And Trudy loses it because clearly Jake was about to leave without Spider.
Now here's where I have a bit of a dilemma. I feel like through actually watching Trudy parent Spider and Neytiri and Trudy being kind of friends, I'm not sure Neytiri would have as much hatred for the boy as she does in canon. Then again it could have been triggered again because of the appearance of the recoms. What I'm saying is maybe Neytiri would oblige Trudy here and go back for him or maybe not. I'm still debating but for the sake of canon let's go with the fact that she doesn't.
Trudy goes on a whole angry rant about what an asshole move it was to just let him be kidnapped and they have no intention of going back for him. Jake's like he's a tough kid and human he'll be fine. And she's like BULLSHIT, do you know why he's a tough kid? Because everyone aside from me made him so! And how could you say that? You don't know what they're gonna do to him. They'll do anything to find out where you are. He's SIXTEEN, Jake! SIXTEEN!
Again, don't know if Jake's friendship with Trudy here would compel him to make a rescue attempt or not, which is why my idea for this event with my Trudy Lives AU isn't solid, solid, but let's continue as if it had gone in canon.
Once she sees he's not going to budge, she's gonna be like, "I respect the fact that you're leaving to get a target off your clan's back. But I will never fucking forgive you for leaving MY kid!"
I think Trudy's spiel would have given Kiri the courage to be like hell yeah how could you leave him that's my best friend! I think the others might be too cowed by her parents' decision to actually go for him right then and there.
Right before the Sully family is going to leave, I think Kiri would run to the lab where Trudy is and tell her she wants to stay to help her get Spider back. Trudy is super touched, but she'd not going to make the same mistake Jake did and let a kid get swept up in this war. So she's like, "I appreciate it, kid, but I can't let you." Kiri starts protesting and she's like, "I can't drag you into this. The whole reason I'm pissed with your old man is because he's fine with Spider getting dragged into this, a KID getting dragged into this shitshow. And I'm not gonna do the same with you. I'm gonna get him back. Ya hear me, Kiri? I'm gonna get him back to you, alright?"
Kiri thinks that if anyone can do it, it's gonna be Trudy so she reluctantly leaves with her family.
Trudy's trained military and a practical woman first and foremost so no matter how much her mama bear instincts are raging at her to just go in guns flying to get her kid back, she sits and tries to make a plan. She ropes the other scientists into it because she knows she won't be able to do it lonewolf-style.
I think first off she'd scout out Bridgehead with the help of some (maybe three) Omatikaya warrior friends she's made over the years (if anyone has suggestions for names or personalities for them I'm all ears). But Bridghead looks basically impenetrable and she'd have no shot of getting in. Besides the whole point of Jake leaving was to get them off of the Omaticaya's backs so she can't really mobilize them to attack the base. She doubted they would follow her anyway.
So she waits, clocking guard shifts and watching. Eventually, whenever Quarritch decides to pull Spider out of the torture machine and be his Na'vi guide, Trudy starts tailing the recom group from afar.
She'd heard about the recoms but had never actually laid eyes on them herself, and seeing Wainfleet's and Quarritch's sends shivers down her spine. And those guys have her son.
For plot reasons, I think she wouldn't be able to make a move for Spider until they start raiding Metkayina clans. For drama reasons anyway. And besides, the recoms are all trained military as well but now in bodies suited to the planet. It would be no easy feat.
Now part of me wants her to go for it before then anyway and get captured. Spider says he won't do anything for Quarritch anymore if he so much as lays a hand on her, so now Trudy is also just traipsing with them as another captive.
The other part of me wants her to take her shot when the RDA is preoccupied with hunting tulkuns to send a signal to the Sully's. Amidst the chaos of the hunt, I think she would be able to drop down onto the boat unnoticed (possibly with the help of a Na'vi friend of hers' ikran and her own kestrel is nearby or something). She hides on the ship until she sees Spider come out of the mouth of the tulkun looking absolutely sick to his stomach.
Because of how long he's been with the recoms, I think they'd probably keep less of a watchful eye on him, which would allow Trudy to signal him and make a run for it under their noses. She nabs Spider and they jump off the boat together, getting picked up by her Na'vi friend along the way on the back of her ikran. It would be a good half hour to an hour before Quarritch even noticed the kid was gone since he had been busy plotting with the tulkun hunters. And he can't justify going to get them.
Luckily because Trudy's a smart and skilled adult, she'd have more spare exopacks and once Spider says there's a tracker in his, she gives another one and they ditch his somewhere in the middle of the ocean or something.
From here, Trudy would probably pilot her kestrel towards Awa'atlu. I imagine that she's such a good pilot, she'd long since disabled any tracking signals or anything from her kestrel and flies solo/manually (so the RDA can't track her). She's going there because as pissed as she is with Jake for leaving her son and running, she knows he deserves to know how close Quarritch is and what his plans are.
I'd imagine in this version, since Trudy got him back NETEYAM DOESN'T DIE AND ALL IS WELL.
Need Jake to do some apologizing and shit but well that's out of the scope of this question rn.
Hope that answered the question. If you guys have any thoughts about what I mentioned I was uncertain about, please feel free to share.

Shadow & Trudy?
Shadow:
I'm even more apathetic about Shadow than I am about Silver: I appreciate other characters like him, like Alucard and especially Zero my babyboy lol. He's cool, he has the privilege of having the most drawn out character arc in the series, and he has some quirks like his use of boku in Japanese or him being actually more cordial than most give him credit for. I used to resent him for being so popular (something something he's the true protagonist of the game named after sonic), now I just... kind of like him. But I still don't understand why he's so popular. I think it's because I skipped SA2 when I was a kid.
(yes I am fully aware of the irony of a ShTH stan not being a Shadow stan. I may be the only one lmaooooo)
Trudy:
WHEN IS BABYGIRL GOING TO COME BACK FROM THE WAR ;A;
she's adorable :) She's an introvert in the Sonic cast done right, with interesting abilities and limitations, and the cutest chemistry with Sonic and Cream :>

“Miami Vice:” The Series Finale
Crockett and Tubbs embark on one last rodeo before parting ways in the series finale of “Miami Vice.”
Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, as they appeared in the series finale of “Miami Vice,” titled “Freefall.” (NBC)
It was the show that hit it out of the park. Starting with a timeless pilot episode directed by Michael Mann, theme composed by Jan Hammer, and stars Don Johnson (Crockett) and Philip Michael Thomas (Tubbs), “Miami Vice” encapsulated the height of 1980s fashion and pop culture.
They routinely went undercover in Miami’s criminal underworld as members of the fictional Miami police vice squad. They also drove nice cars (Ferrari Daytona and Testarossa, Cadillac Coupe de Ville), dated beautiful women, and Crockett lived on a yacht in Biscayne Bay called St. Vitus Dance (most recently docked in Key West).
It was a life of vice, and they were just living it.

The last episode of “Miami Vice,” the 21st and 22nd of the fifth season and 113th and 114th overall, first aired in prime time Sunday, May 21, 1989 on NBC.
In “Freefall,” Crockett and Tubbs are recruited by the feds to protect a corrupt South American dictator involved in illicit drug trade, as the two find themselves increasingly disillusioned with the work of vice.
Original supporting cast members Michael Talbott (Stan), Saundra Santiago (Gina), and Olivia Brown (Trudy), as well as Edward James Olmos (Marty), appear in the two part, two hour conclusion of the series.
