Les voitures intéressantes du TestFest de l'AJAC, deuxième partie

Comme promis la semaine dernière, voici la deuxième partie de mon reportage sur les voitures que j’ai pu conduire lors du Festival des Essais (TestFest) qui s’est tenu il y a deux semaines à la piste Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (CTMP ou Mosport). Je répète que, malheureusement, bien des constructeurs d’automobile américains et européens ont décidé de ne pas participer à cet évènement annuel ce qui a laissé beaucoup de place aux Asiatiques. Mais ce fut quand même excitant surtout qu’il y avait plusieurs voitures sportives disponibles.

Toyota Supra GR

J’ai donc commencé la journée avec le coupé sport Supra GR de Toyota. J’ai toujours un peu de difficulté à planifier cette voiture dans mon agenda alors, vu qu’elle y était, aussi bien en profiter. Bien entendu, il s’agit ici d’une voiture recherchée très agréable à conduire. J’ai tellement de difficulté à m’imaginer que Toyota ait dû se fier à BMW pour la base. Je comprends très bien que de refaire un six cylindres en ligne à partir de zéro aurait coûté une fortune mais…Comment cela se fait-il qu’un géant comme Toyota ait à se fier à d’autres constructeurs pour ses sportives (comme Subaru pour sa 86)? Enfin, au moins j’ai pu en profiter un peu. Quelques tours de piste.  Cette Supra avait des pneus Michelin de performance) auraient été amusant mais il faut que je comprenne que je dois évaluer cette auto comme si j’étais un consommateur régulier donc principalement sur la route…Je l’ai quand même aimée. J’ai surtout apprécié que la suspension soit douce sur route normale! Reste que à plus de 69 000 $, elle est plutôt coûteuse…

Subaru Crosstrek

Je ne pouvais pas passer outre la Crosstrek. Toutefois, je n’y ai pas appris grand-chose (il n’y avait pas de piste hors-route cette année au TestFest) puisque je m’étais rendu à CTMP au volant d’une Subaru Impreza qui est ni plus ni moins la base de la Crosstrek. Pire encore, au moment d’écrire ces lignes, je conduis une Crosstrek de presse! Par conséquent, j’aurais très bientôt un texte sur les deux autos en même temps. Cependant, je l’avoue, je partage l’engouement que les consommateurs ont envers les produits Subaru…En passant, on parle d’environ 36 500 $ pour cette auto équipée de pneus Falken agressifs.

Lexus RX 450 PHEV

Certes le plus populaire des produits Lexus, ce bel intermédiaire devient encore plus important dans sa variante «enfichable» surtout que Toyota, le constructeur des Lexus, est passé maître dans l’art de produire des enfichables (PHEV) très efficaces. Ce Lexus m’apparaît alors comme un «must» à considérer lors d’un achat puisqu’il répond à tant d’attentes des automobilistes. Bonnes dimensions, efficacité sur toute sortes de terrains, économique, excellents pneus Bridgestone appropriés et pas vilain à regarder…on rêverait qu’il soit proposé au prix d’une sous-compacte…mais on ne peut pas tout avoir, semble-t-il! J’espère pouvoir mettre la main sur un exemplaire de presse au cours des prochains mois…Ah oui…cet exemplaire affichait un prix de 86 950 $ !

Acura Type S

Voilà un coupé sport qu’il fallait que je conduise. Ceux qui lisent ce blogue régulièrement se souviendront que je n’ai pas été tendre avec cette auto en version de base lors d’un essai régulier. Mes plaintes? Surtout le bruit infernal des pneus qui pénétrait dans l’habitacle sur route au revêtement rugueux. Mais, ce qu’il y avait de pire, les sièges tellement inconfortables. J’avais décidé de monter chez mon fils en Abitibi et mal m’en a pris. Je ne trouvais plus de position après deux heures derrière le volant. Et pire encore, ma femme, cette personne raisonnable qui ne «chiâle» jamais en auto, m’a demandé d’arrêter avant que je n’attaque le Parc de la Vérendrye…elle ne pouvait plus sentir le bas de son corps tant elle était inconfortable. Évidemment, la version Type S encore plus puissante que l’Intégra de base est une sportive amusante. Mais elle n’est pas plus une grande routière. Ma suggestion? Acheter un coussin (beignet) de siège chez Canadian Tire avant d’attaquer une longue route. En passant, malgré des échappements plus «sportifs», la voiture (de 55 600 $) n’est pas beaucoup plus bruyante à l’intérieur quoique le tout dépende de la condition du pavé. Voilà aussi une autre voiture que j’aurais bien aimé essayer sur circuit (surtout avec ses Michelin de performance) mais…

Kia Seltos

Puis, je me suis dit, il n’y a pas que des sportives ici. Il y a aussi des véhicules réguliers. Alors j’ai opté pour une ballade en Kia Seltos. Vraiment pas mal comme véhicule économique sauf que je suggérerais à Kia de réviser l’instrumentation avec des chiffres et des inscriptions plus grosses. On a peine à lire le tableau de bord et si vous me jugez par mon âge, souvenez-vous que cette voiture ne s’adresse pas aux jeunes mais plutôt à des automobilistes plus modérés qui recherchent d’abord un véhicule pratique et économique. Outre l’instrumentation, j’ai bien aimé mon court essai du Seltos (je dis «du» et non «de la» parce que je pense que c’est un petit utilitaire et non une voiture malgré que son espace de chargement est relativement limité). D’autre part, ce n’est certes pas un «foudre de guerre» (pour reprendre une expression consacrée) mais ses performances sont honnêtes et, ma foi, suffisantes pour les besoins de la cause. Le prix aussi (plus de 35 000 $). Il faut dire que les produits Kia ont repris beaucoup de poil de la bête au point de vue fiabilité alors, je tiendrai cela en ligne de compte dans mes évaluations. Les pneus de ce véhicule étaient des Kumho Majestic.

Toyota Corolla GR

Enfin, j’ai pu mettre la main sur la «fameuse» Toyota Corolla GR (Gazoo Racing) ! Cette petite berline de performance m’était grandement conseillée (incluant les recommandations de Romaric Lartilleux, le représentant (P.R.) de Toyota aux relations de presse) mais je n’arrivais pas à l’obtenir tant elle était populaire.

Surprise, alors que je m’attendais à une suspension incroyablement dure, j’ai eu droit à un comportement routier «civilisé» (du moins à vitesse raisonnable) moins sec et ferme que celui de la concurrence dont il est mention dans ce reportage. Puis, le véhicule est plus silencieux que prévu (encore une fois, à vitesse raisonnable!). Mais le plus étonnant, c’est de constater ce que Toyota a pu faire avec le petit moteur à trois cylindres de 1,6 litre (turbocompressé, cependant) qui anime cette voiture. C’est pourquoi je me demande comment il se fait que ce constructeur si réputé n’a pu faire ses propres moteurs pour les Supra et 86?

Vous aurez aussi compris que j’aurais bien aimé disposer d’un peu de temps de piste pour m’amuser un peu. Toutefois, je peux vous assurer que quelques petits «essais» m’ont convaincu qu’il s’agisse ici d’une véritable auto de performance ce qui justifiait les pneus Michelin appropriés. Malheureusement, son prix ne conviendra pas au budget de jeunes conducteurs  (plus de 45 000 $) à moins que…J’ai vraiment aimé!

Honda Civic Type R

La dernière voiture que j’ai conduite au TestFest était la berline Honda Civic Type R. Bien entendu, pour moi, ça faisait partie d’un petit exercice comparatif de sportives performantes sur routes de campagne. Elle pouvait aussi se mesurer à l’Acura Integra et à la Corolla GR mentionnées plus haut. Malheureusement, ayant «grandi» avec les Civic du début (on avait même une Civic légèrement modifiée chez nous à la fin des années soixante-dix), j’ai un peu de difficulté à m’identifier aux Civic actuelles que je trouve très grosses. Mais qu’y voulez-vous. N’est-ce pas ce que la clientèle désire?

N’empêche que j’ai trouvé cette auto amusante  (c’est le «fun» de se retrouver avec une boîte manuelle une fois de temps en temps). Mais je me demande si je pourrais vivre avec ces sièges si fermes (semblables à ceux de l’Integra), du moins sur de longues distances. Le ronronnement des échappements n’est, toutefois, pas aussi agaçant que prévu. Par contre, j’aime bien les accélérations quoique les gros pneus font facilement sauter le train avant lors d’accélérations un peu vives!

Évidemment, un tel évènement peut attirer certains participants qui veulent s’illustrer un peu plus et c’est pourquoi on pouvait voir des voitures un peu hors de l’ordinaire dans le stationnement. Parmi celles-ci, il y avait une Honda Civic CRX des années quatre-vingt conduite par un jeune journaliste de l’AJAC qui nous a avoué que c’était une pièce de collection de son père. Elle n’a certes pas passé inaperçue !

Par contre, d’autres jeunes journalistes ont été plus prétentieux avec cette toute nouvelle Porsche 911 Dakar, une voiture spéciale proposée par le constructeur allemand. Rappelant les exploits des années passées de la marque légendaire, cette voiture toute neuve à moteur de 473 chevaux capable de passer de 0 à 100 km/h en moins de 3,5 secondes et pouvant atteindre les 240 km/h se détaille 278 209 $ plus les options comme le support sur le toit, les projecteurs, les réservoirs de secours et autres…

Nova Toyota SW4 aparece em flagra antes do lançamento

Um flagra da nova Toyota SW4 mostrou como deverão ser as novas linhas do utilitário. O modelo passa por uma reestilização que deverá ser apresentada no segundo semestre. As imagens que apareceram na internet são da Toyota Fortuner, como a SW4 é chamada em mercados asiáticos onde também é vendida.

O modelo ganhará mudanças mais visíveis na dianteira e na traseira. Segundo as imagens, a frente terá faróis mais afilados, com unidades de LED e inspiração clara nos SUVs mais recentes da Toyota. RAV4 e o novo compacto Raíze são exemplos. A grade também ficou mais estreita e a SW4 deverá ter menos cromados na nova fase.

A traseira também passou por mudanças, menos visíveis no flagra. No entanto, ganhou um recorte mais profundo nas laterais do parachoque traseiro. O elemento lembra modelos da Lexus e dá ares mais luxuosos ao SUV. O perfil continua inalterado e a SW4 poderá ter opção de teto pintado de preto brilhante, como a unidade flagrada.

O interior ainda é um mistério, mas espera-se que o modelo ganhe uma central multimídia melhor do que a atual. Possivelmente será a mesma usada pelo novo Corolla. Também deverá ganhar mais luxo e conforto na cabine, o que deve elevar ainda mais seu preço.

Atualmente a gama da SW4 vai de R$ 178.890 aos R$ 284.390 cobrados pela versão de topo Diamond. Há variantes com cinco e sete lugares. São duas opções de motor, um 2.7 flexível com 163 cv e um 2.8 turbodiesel de 177 cv. Para ambos, o câmbio é sempre automático de seis marchas.

O conjunto mecânico não deve mudar por aqui. Em outros mercados, o modelo é vendido também com o V6 de 4,0 litros que equipa a versão GR-S da Hilux. O 4.0 até chegou a integrar a linha brasileira da SW4, mas saiu discretamente de linha por conta da baixa procura. Há ainda versões com um 2.4 ou um 3.0 a diesel dependendo do mercado.

Road Tests: 2020 Toyota Supra

This one certainly has been a long time coming, the all-new Toyota Supra. And we already feel sorry for it, Even though most folks have never even drove its predecessor, the new car has to live up to thousands of blog posts and twitter feeds longing for its return.. surely this new Supra will have a tough time being measured against all that hype…or will it?

Remember the Scion FR-S, aka, the Toyota 86? It was co-developed with Subaru. Two companies looking to mutually benefit from creating an inexpensive, back to basics rear drive sport coupe. Well, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is a much loftier proposition, so Toyota needed a partner to match. 

Enter, BMW. Yes, as I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the all-new Supra shares an architecture with the BMW Z4 roadster. 

And, most enthusiasts will be happy to know an inline-6, which just happens to be a BMW specialty, returns. Yes, it’s no 2JZ, but Toyota did their own software for both the 3.0-liter and its 8-speed automatic transmission. Turbo-aided output is 335-horsepower and 365 lb-ft. of torque. 

But, don’t throw this off as a BMW clone. Actually, it was spearheaded by the same Toyota chief engineer that oversaw the FR-S/BR-Z; and in similar fashion, both Toyota and BMW started with a basic modular chassis, but went their separate ways from there, though the Supra is assembled on the same Austrian assembly line as the Z4. 

Engineered by Toyota’s GAZOO racing team, the Supra is truly a car in need of a track. Fortunately, the national press intro was right in our backyard at West Virginia’s Summit Point Motorsports Park. 

On track, a Macpherson strut front, and 5-arm multi-link rear suspension, along with adaptive variable dampers, keep the Supra well composed. 

Click things over to Sport mode, and it really comes alive; throttle response is heightened, shifts from the automatic become quicker, steering becomes sharper, the active rear differential gets more aggressive, and the artificially enhanced engine and crackly exhaust notes permeates the cabin a bit more. 

Rear drive of course, the electronically controlled active diff. can send the full amount to power to the outside wheel to give you the most drive off of corners; but it also works to help settle the rear under hard braking.   

Brembo brakes were more than up to the task of cutting speed in a hurry, to get through the Shenandoah Circuit’s many low speed corners. 

Plenty of power for coming out of turns; it almost feels like someone shoved a V8 into an 86. 

Manually triggering shifts, worked quite well, though not so well that we didn’t wish for a true manual. You don’t have to try too hard to find some oversteer out of corners; and while there was a little more softness and roll than we’d like, it just adds to the great overall feedback. 

With a claimed 0-60 of just 4.1-seconds it’s the fastest production Toyota ever; and not to worry, the exhaust sounds are nothing like a BMW, or any other Toyota really, more like something conjured up in a tuner shop. Our best run, 4.4 seconds, was only slightly off.

Launch control ensures you get the best out of it, and keeping the throttle pinned for the full ¼-mile resulted in a time of 12.8–seconds at 111 miles-per-hour. 

Body panels are a mixed-metaphor of aluminum and steel. It looks much smaller in person; racy enough without going full fast and furious. Some air passageways are functional, most are not. 19-inch wheels come shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. 

Away from the track, in normal mode, not unlike the 86, it’s a quite pleasant daily driver. Only big bumps cause any shutter. Seats are low, however, so you feel like you’re straining to see over the dash.

The BMW influence is strongest inside. Perhaps Toyota could have contributed a little more here, but that would have added a lot more onto the price. You do get a unique steering wheel and shifter; though operation of it is just like BMW. Seats are also distinctive and quite nice. And yes, that means there’s iDrive to contend with too.

Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 24-City, 31-Highway, and 26-Combined.  We averaged 29.3 miles-per-gallon on Premium. Making an average Energy Impact Score of 12.7-barrels of yearly oil use, with 5.5 tons of CO2 emissions. 

The Supra is a much more serious performance car than the 86; so, price is equally higher, starting at $50,920. By the way, a Z4 is almost 13 grand more.

For some, especially internet haters, nothing short of bringing back the last A80 would have satisfied them. My car was rear ended while parked in front of my house and insurance has declared it a total loss. We have been going back and forth on the value of the car and have finally gotten them to a value that we agree with but we disagree with how much they are taking off for previous damage to the car. There was a dent to the left fender and a scrape on the right back door, Farmers is saying it would cost $1100 to repair which is close to some of the estimates I have gotten from body shops. But they are not depreciating that value down for a used car. We were going through Safeco as well and they were taking 40% of the cost to make those repairs and deducting it from the value. So here's the question in case you don't want to read my wall of text below (but it would be appreciated if you did to further understand my question). I was covered under my moms health insurance while in college and I was told I needed to be enrolled in school to stay covered, I dropped out a while ago and was wondering if I am still covered by law under the Affordable Care Act since I am only 19. I was covered under my mothers health insurance, she works for a private company and she said that I needed to be enrolled in school in order to stay covered by the insurance. But this was close to a year ago if I'm remembering correctly. The reason I'm worried is because I'm taking a break from college, and have had multiple doctor appointments/tests done after I left, but I never had a problem with the insurance going through. I've made myself paranoid into thinking that the company may just not know, and is assuming I'm still in school and will randomly hit me with the costs of the testings and doctor visits if they saw I was not in school, or god forbid somewhere down the road my mother or I are in a serious accident and are dropped because of this.
