#Tossing Seed

I had other plans for today's post, but some late session snooping brought me to Tossing Seed (a clear reference to Superchunk) - a band Szenzhen, China (or maybe not...the label, Small Animal Records is based in Szenzhen).

The Bandcamp page states that the band has an affinity for the C86 sound. The page also name drops influences like The Soup Dragons, Black Tambourine, The Hazmats and The Primitives.

This is pretty fuzzy and poppy. The vocals are sweet. Think of Say Sue Me crossed with early theCatherines.

I think the key word here is stable.

We've occasionally seen more fluid, abstract dreamscapes, such as WV's shared dream with Vriska, or Jade's chaotic post-death nap. These, I think, are the Dream Bubbles as they naturally occur, without the Horrorterrors keeping them coherent. They're unstable, liable to mutate or collapse without warning.

The Bubbles might always have existed - but, thanks to Feferi, they're solid now, and can be used as a medium for consistent communication.

Today I planted cardinal flower, swamp milkweed, and Canadian milk vetch at the bottom next to a creek. I hope they get enough sun, I had to plant them pretty close to the trees to protect them from the lawnmowers.

Today is the seventh day of Lunar New Year, also known as Renri (人日). According to Chinese customs, Renri was the day human beings were created. It is celebrated not only in China, but also in the surrounding region influenced by Chinese culture. In Chinese mythology, Nüwa (女娲) was the goddess who created the world. She created the animals on different days and human beings on the seventh day after the creation of the world. On this day, Singaporeans and Malaysians often crowded around the table to toss Yu Sheng (鱼生) or Prosperity Toss. This is a raw fish salad brought to Singapore with the migration of Cantonese and Teochew people from China in the 19th century.

Our Yu Sheng was bought from Sushi Express (爭鮮) and came with a set of red packets or Hong Bao (红包) along with a card with simple instructions on how to do the prosperity toss (捞鱼生). The Good Luck Yu Sheng Set (S$39.80) came with assorted vegetables in their natural or dyed colours, eight pieces of raw salmon and other condiments. As you poured in various ingredients and sauce, you say the auspicious phrases indicated on the accompanied card and then everyone get ready to toss the ingredients as high as possible and at the same time shouting “Huat Ah” without spilling onto the table. The taste of the salad came from the sweet plum sauce, lime juice, golden crackers, pepper and five-spice powder and it is quite pleasant to the palate. Anyway, after eating the yu sheng, we hope everyone had a prosperous and abundant year ahead.

im so sorry but i have to ask are Rill and Thresher supposed to make me think season 0 kaiba and yugi I think it's the green hair that does it

the primary inspiration for Rill is absolutely S0 Kaiba and I'm not exactly being subtle about it! However, Thresher is not Yugi in any way whatsoever.

Thresher is based on a character concept I wanted to follow through on since 2019 before I ever watched Yugioh and doesn't really have an existing character in other media I can really point to as a comparison point or specific point of inspiration. I actually almost scrapped their concept entirely because when Splat 3 came by and had Shiver be a shark themed Octoling I was like FUCK they got to it first!!! People are gonna think I'm immediately ripping off a canon character!! But I got over it because who gives a shit, I was here first, and it's not actually very similar to what I was wanting to do anyways

Then about a year after I actually made Thresher into a proper character I caved to my dark desires of "I want to play with that cabbage freak in this other setting and see what he mutates into" and the only character I had lying around to throw him at happened to be Thresher.

The biggest inspiration for how Thresher deals with Rill has been a hawk I saw once sitting on a house roof ignoring a tiny ass songbird that was repeatedly dive-bombing it and bouncing off of it without doing any visible damage. I'm being completely serious this was the funniest thing I've ever seen

Anyways point is I think the biggest trap people fall into with these 2 is that they see a Kaiba and assume that there's going to be a Yugi somewhere to match when in reality I made these two completely independently of each other whoops

SO I DREW SOME BASE/CORE LOOKS/REDESIGNS OF THE ALIEN MUSIC MEN AND i have some extra lore tidbits

So all their limbs are double-segmented - On the immobiles (left), they no longer have digigrade back legs and now have the same limbs all the way down. Also, I have to applaud them for giving me the idea on how I could make them look coincidentally "human-ish" to still pass off as Music Men - facial discs!

Both their ears are now on their cheeks and have the appearance of DJ's cheeks! accompanied by a facial disc that directs soundwaves down to their tympanums, and with the configuration, they've got a music-man-y appearance. Got the idea from owls since for this same reason they kind of have a very flat-faced appearance!

However, I don't know about the nose. It's not for smell, I would imagine they smell through a completely different way (their antennae, which i was on the fence on actually giving but i will now). I gave the comids a nose like the immobiles for the reason that the comids and immobiles should look more alike but as for how it got there in the first place I have no clue. Maybe it makes them hot? OOH wait what if it helps with making calls

Which, speaking of calls, they actually are called Music Men in canon because of their complicated tracheas - I imagine the reason for it is during the interception where the now-extinct ancestors of the music men were resurrecting their planet, they were homesick for the world pre-extinction, one of the things being their equivalent to birdsong. Their world was, unnervingly, silent, and at a time when they were not at the top of the foodchain, it only reminded them further that death is near. So alongside everything else, they gave the comids and immobiles alike the craziest natural acoustics they could give. They don't exactly have genders - Their "man" is any living thing, and seperate themselves as the "music men."

Also, their homesickness is a tenant in a lot of the music men's religions/values because a big thing is that they have a lot of reverence and protection for any fauna or flora that has remained since before their worldwide intervention - conservation is holy to them because animals are living relics and it's partially why they are so fascinated with us. We are the survivors of an extinction that didn't have an intervention like they did and they kind of wanna stick by our side because of it.

i have been making roasted yam & braised arugula and poached eggs for breakfast/lunch and the difference from being overstimulated in the last few moments to how i feel after i have eaten is so major and makes the cooking worth it
