It's April 5th in Japan. Would have been Akira Toriyama's 69th birthday today.

Still so surreal and hard to think about him being gone.
He lives on in our hearts, though. Happy birthday, Toriyama-sensei.

SAND LAND Episode 1: The Legendary Spring
There's really no two ways about it, Sunrise (+ Anima & Kamikaze Douga) absolutely nailed Akira Toriyama's world with this first episode. Equally impressive though is their insane 3D work.
I'm a big fan of Sand Land so I don't have much to add from a narrative perspective, but the CGI work on this series is actually incredible. Of course, this is an episodic version of the movie, so it's going to have quality that knocks your socks off, but this is the sort of work that gives Orange a run for its money.
Between this trio, Toei, and Orange, the future of CGI anime has never looked brighter. It's incredible work, impressive awareness, and peerless talent on display.
Because of that though, it just highlights the hack work that the rest of the industry has been doing. These studios have a near perfect understanding of what you can and can't do with 3D anime, and they have the experience and ability to deliver on what they *can* do. It's a massive difference to CGI being used to cut corners or cost on the majority of series, and it absolutely shows.
Hopefully studios learn from this incredible work and begin to pivot, but until then I'll be happily enjoying the seven episodes of Sand Land that are out currently (and periodically sharing my thoughts on them).

Thank you Toriyama Akira sensei, db will go down as one of the biggest inspirations for anime and art. 6 year old me always looked forward to watching 20 minutes of screaming power up sessions after school every week. Now year old me still does too 🐉 🟠

And finally the last drawing in my series of drawing Yugi in different artstyles! Sorry for how long it took, a billion things happened IRL...
This time it is in the style of Akira Toriyama's earlier works, mostly Dr. Slump! It was complicated but still fun to do, maybe I'll do more of these in the future!
Also I couldn't find the exact font they use on the manga covers for Dr Slump, so please accept this kinda close one i found

So sad to hear of Akira Toriyama’s passing. He was an incredible artist who inspired millions, myself included. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that without his influence, I wouldn’t be an artist. I remember catching episodes of Dragonball Z on Toonami as a kid, and while I never got the whole story as the channel played any episode they felt like in any order, I was enamoured by the art, character designs and animation. Being a fan of video games too, I saw his designs in games like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. I remember drawing Goku over and over again as a kid, before slowly making my own characters in the style of Dragonball. I cannot thank this man enough, for helping me become the artist I am today, and I hope to become even a fraction as good as he some day.

Another simple tribute for the late Akira Toriyama.
Here's another favourite of ours, Future Trunks, humanity's last hope in his timeline, who made sure that Goku's future would never end up like the one where he came from.
Speaking of time travelling, we'd like to do a Chrono Trigger fanart since it's also a big part of our childhood, but we'll see if time permits *sobs*
