My tribute to Akira Toriyama. 🧡
To the anime that has inspired millions and got me places with my art in so many ways. (And yes, it’s the reason why I started to like drawing muscles so much lol)
Endless thanks to Akira Toriyama for everything.

Live your life like a Kamehameha. Give your all, don’t ever give up. ✨🐉✨
DBZ is the last thing I remember my brothers and I getting together to watch. I remember our dad letting us stay up on summer nights to watch episodes. We're older now, and we haven't watched a series together in a while as time brought changes, but our love for it is still there. The last thing Goku said to us back then was "Until we meet again!" and that's how I try to see the end of things. Thank you Akira Toriyama for inspiring a whole generation to love, fight, and create new beginnings. Thank you for those happy memories I got to share with my brothers.

I found this old drawing of son goku I did 9 years ago, I think this was when I wanted to draw just like him at that point, and so I thought "hey how about I redraw this?"…
Tumblr media
…and so I did.
Thank you for everything, Toriyama. I'll be seeing you on the other world.

Thank you Toriyama-sensei for what you've given to this world. Not just with Dragon Ball but for greatly influencing Pokemon as well. I will be forever grateful.

Can't really express how grateful I am to Toriyama. He influenced a large chunk of my childhood, as well as influenced so many pieces of art I love. It's late, but I wanted to share my tribute to him. Hopefully he can see everything everyone's made and I feel our spirit energy, wherever he is now.

Two proud, fierce, spiky-haired warriors face each other across a rocky chasm… but why do they both feel so strangely familiar to the other?! A battle for honour is surely about to begin!
Through Dragonball, Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama had a massive influence on my childhood. I think it’s also pretty fair to say that Pokemon, and especially Lance, would not be the same without his stylistic influence on Ken Sugimori’s early work. So, for all the thrills and inspiration, both to myself and many others, thank you so much Toriyama-san, and rest in peace.
I had so much fun designing a Toriyama-style DBZ design for Lance, putting in a bit of flavour from both his Gen 1 red biker and Gen 2 pointed armour looks. The dramatic cape flourish also pulls a bit from his HGSS art pose, just for fun (and flair)
I learnt a lot picking apart and studying different Dragonball panels and colour spreads to make this crossover tribute, but perhaps the most striking thing was re-reading chunks of DBZ and realising just how good at weekly pulp adventure story pacing Toriyama was.
I already knew he had perhaps the best grasp of dynamic, crystal clear action panelling in the business, but his ability to pace out a weekly story and always have some new twist or wrinkle while maintaining a solid, driving central narrative really stood out to me this time. And that’s not even mentioning all the ad-libbing!
One of the greatest to ever do it in so very many different ways - I am sure his work will continue to inspire not just artists in our current generation, but many young artists in the future as well.

Another simple tribute for the late Akira Toriyama.
Here's another favourite of ours, Future Trunks, humanity's last hope in his timeline, who made sure that Goku's future would never end up like the one where he came from.
Speaking of time travelling, we'd like to do a Chrono Trigger fanart since it's also a big part of our childhood, but we'll see if time permits *sobs*

Man, I can't even process this.
The legend, Akira Toriyama has passed away.
He made so many things that I enjoy and love and knowing that he's gone just hurts so much. This man created apart of our childhood.

Dragon Ball is now 40 years old everyone! Released on November 20th 1984! Dragon Ball for those who don’t know (SOMEHOW) is a legendary, influential and iconic action-adventure, science fantasy dramedy manga series that spawned several anime series and movie from the original series to Dragon Ball Z (arguably just as awesome and well known as the original) to Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super! It’s the story of a young extraterrestrial martial artist with a big appetite and a monkey tail by the name of Son Goku who ventures across the world for the Dragon Balls (7 mythical spherical objects with numbered stars that grant the user 1 free wish by the Dragon Lord/God (I can’t remember his name sorry :( ) then the series takes further into introducing many legendary characters from Bulma, Krillin, Master Roshi, Vegeta, Raditz, Piccolo, Chi-Chi, Android 18, Gohan, Trunks, Yamcha, Tien, Goten, Beerus, Whis, Majinn Buu, Mr Satan and many many more! This series not only became a global sensation, phenomenon and a worldwide success thanks to the series’ amazing and well known action and fight sequences, growing of age and abilities and just many amazing moments but became many inspiration for many shows, manga, video games, anime and much more to come (eg. One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, MHA, OK KO, Steven Universe, etc!).
If only Akira Toriyama was here to see this, he would’ve been immensely and unbelievably proud of what his series, no, one of his masterpieces grow into such a beautiful, inspiring and amazing story that everyone knows and loves worldwide, rest in peace to one of the GOATs of anime and manga. (1955 - 2024). Thank you for so much Toriyama sensei.
Happy 40th Anniversary Dragon Ball! And thank you, not only for the awesome memories, scenes, fights, actions, quotes, music, moments and much more, but for being with us since the 1980s. We love you dearly and we wish you and your team an incredible 40th birthday. Kamehameha!
