Please tell us about Yuri's personality.

T: As someone of the same gender, I admire him and think he's cool.

If you look at the popularity polls, you can see that he's a very popular character.

T: He has a lot of charm because he’s prepared to accept everything and is unwavering. From my perspective as someone of the same gender, he’s really cool and reliable. He’s only 21, though (laughs).

But some of the other main characters in “Tales of” are adults.

T: He’s the oldest in its history, and he doesn’t really seem like the main character. If anything, Flynn seems more like the lead.

Is there anything about Yuri's personality that you would like to change?

It’s perfect, so not really anything. But there are some things I decided on myself, so if we were to do things together, I might think, "let me know."

(Translator note: I believe what he's referring to here is that since he decided on some aspects of Yuri's character himself (more on that below), that when working with others in relation to Yuri, he might want to be checked in with so nothing conflicts. I'm not saying that's 100 percent the case, but that's what it sounds like to me.)

What were your thoughts when it was decided that you would be playing the role for Yuri?

T: I auditioned, but at first, I only had minimal material and it was like, "you can do what you like." So, I did what I thought would work, “and so”, it was decided. For Yuri, it came to me pretty quickly, so I didn’t have trouble creating his character.

(Translator note: Basically, from what he’s saying here, it sounds like they gave him his lines or some sort of other minimal material, then let him voice Yuri’s lines however he felt worked/decided the voice direction largely for himself. In that sense, you could say Toriumi was part of the creation process of the character. He also mentions this in an interview he had in the guidebook for Radiant Mythology 2. This also checks out with his March 2015 Tales of Magazine interview, where the interviewer mentions that Toriumi seems to know/understand Yuri even better than one of the original writers (in this case, Okuda). Toriumi points out that "you sort of soak (the character) in after playing them for so long" (Toriumi had already been playing Yuri actively for years by the point of this interview, hence the "so long"), and that the voice actors (for Vesperia) gave input on their characters and had discussions about character dialogue; so my understanding* is that he was in fact part of the creation process and not “just” a voice actor. Specifying this because he does use the word for “create” in this interview.)

If you were to create a guild in the real world, what kind of guild would you like to create?

T: I think I would make curry. I like curry (laughs). I’d like to compare “my curry” to everyone else’s and run a curry shop.

Lastly, please give a message to all your fans.

T: We were able to do the sequel for Radiant Mythology 2, and I think it’s all due to everyone’s support. I hope you will continue to support Yuri, “Vesperia”, and the “Tales of” series.

My guess is that, if correct, Takuto is a pun on "Tact", as the two are spelled with the same katakana).

Please tell us about Flynn's personality.

M: Flynn's charm is his sincerity and straightforwardness in the pursuit of his goals. Throughout the game, he faced everything without compromising those things, and I think that’s honestly amazing. I want to follow his example.

What are your thoughts about acting out scenes with characters from series other than "Vesperia"?

M: I think it's really exciting when characters from popular long-running series are brought together to tell a story, so I'm happy to be a part of it. The story unfolds in an original world, so it was a lot of fun to see the characters' relationships progress differently than usual.

What did you think when you first found out that it was decided that you'd be playing Flynn?

M: I was very happy to be able to participate in the historic "Tales of" series. I felt like I, too, could also leave my name in its history. We all recorded together for "Vesperia", so our bonds have really deepened. They’re the best! And I'm also happy to be invited to play in an "everyone comes together!" game like this one!

If you were to create a guild in the real world, what kind of guild would you like to create?

M: Military arts for protecting people isn’t my strong suit (laughs), so I’d want to create a guild that’s more calm and fun. I’d like to create a comedy guild that spreads laughter to everyone.

Lastly, please give a message to the fans.

M: There are scenes where he’s carrying out his duties as the captain of the knights, and there are some comical scenes; so I think if you play the game repeatedly, you’ll be able to see Flynn’s charm. It would make me happy if you could enjoy it again and again.

In the case of this interview (RM2's book aside), it sounds like Toriumi is basically saying he largely decided voice direction for himself at the behest of the people in charge. That's not to say he did or didn't have any other voice direction, but that he did seem to have a heavy hand in deciding how Yuri was voiced, and that it was largely left to his discretion. While this might sound odd and unfamiliar to a western audience, just remember that this was done in the region of the game's creation. In the west, with Japan made media, the voice actors are dubbing pre-existing material and not working with a blank slate or coming up with ideas for brand new content. So, this is to clarify any potential confusion to that section of the interview. Ultimately, yes, it's fair to say Toriumi had a hand in helping create Yuri. While I can't speak for how common Toriumi's specific scenario is among the industry at large, this simply appears to be the case for his situation.

Chiaki was a guest on Kindan nama radio with Angen and Tori-chan.

I was listening and had to muffle my giggles and squeals. He was too precious.

At one point they had to act as some characters for a skit, and Chiaki was acting as a girl. His voice was SO CUTE!!! So soft!!! "She" was talking about her papa. The way Chiaki was talking was so cute!!! He said papa but later said chichi, so Angen asked which one was it, so Chiaki replied: "papa desu" in such a cute voice asdfghjkl!!!

On the second skit Angen & Tori-chan were acting as cats. Angen enjoyed it too much, nyaaaing all over the place (every nyan was amazing). Then they decided the cats were: Tori-chan = Egu, Angen = Kouchan. Angen enjoyed doing the: "neeeeee~" and Tori-chan (Egu) did: "ooooiiiii!!" XDD

Angen really adores Chiaki. I've probably mentioned that before. That's super cute. I remember Chiaki was a guest on Angen's radio a few years ago, when he (Chiaki) was less active/known. Since then he's been a guest on his radio a few more times I think. He was also a guest on Yoasobi where Angen was the host.

They're together on VS AMBIVAENZ (they've been on Yuukoku no Moriarty too), and yesterday it was revealed that Angen is a character on Cherry Magic as well, so he's with Chiaki again ^__^ (I obviously recognized his voice the second he started talking and was beaming from ear to ear. Today Angen tweeted about it. Loved his Cherry Magic emojis~)

I think that everyone who meets Chiaki likes and adores him, there is no other option, he's just that precious and loveable ^_____^ But Angen REALLY adores him <3

Souma's route was a slog to get through so here's some bad jokes that kept me awake

I got scared every time Kaji-san screamed ^^' Dialovers trauma is real

(So disappointed we didn't get a proper Dialovers reunion scene...)

(It's so weird to me that Hakuouki was first with the whole MC-gets-her-blood-sucked-by-her-love-interests thing and Dialovers just leaned into it more. Ah, and comparing the blood-drinking scenes from EB with DL really did me no good, it just frustrated me due to the missed opportunities... Especially since imagining Souma during Kanato's dummy head moments helped me get through his route ^^' I kinda want a Souma with some Kanato-elements now, you know? Oh, and not to mention all the shame every Hakuouki love interest felt before/while/after drinking blood, like: It wouldn't be awkward/bad if you didn't make it so! Also feels like kink-shaming tbh...)

Purple text (Toriumi): Because I'm playing a role that is true-to-life, it feels like my alter ego and is a role that I'm very comfortable with.

-- Q: First, please tell us how you first encountered the “Tales of” series.

T: My first audition for it was for “Vesperia”. I was asked to take the audition. However, there were a lot of people around me who had appeared in previous works, so I had heard a lot about it. Of course, I also knew that it was a very popular series.

Q: You probably saw Yuri's illustrations and characterization at the audition. What impression did you have of him?

T: He was the main character, but he didn’t seem like the main character. My impression of him now, having played the role for many years, is a little different from the impression I had of him back then. His basic character design seemed like he was an outlaw, very annoying, and foul-mouthed. But when I played the role, he turned out to be a surprisingly good guy (laughs).

Q: What is your impression now?

T: Let’s see. Now, I don’t see him as the dark type or the outlaw type. If anything, he feels like a “good older brother”. Also, I’m very conscious of the strength he has when he makes up his mind. There’s not much you can do about only having the initial basic characterization, as far as understanding a character’s personality goes. But when I auditioned, I thought it felt like he might be a bit more twisted. Yuri’s dark side and peeved side only comes out when he’s around the knights or something evil, right? But at first, I thought he would be that way just in general. But in reality, he has a very strong sense of justice and is a strong-minded person. I guess you could say he's quick to make up his mind. I gradually began to feel like, once you make up your mind, you have the strength to accomplish things even on your own.

Q: You also achieved a second consecutive victory in the character popularity poll!

T: Thank you very much! I don’t particularly worry about rankings in popularity polls or anything like that, but the work itself has been highly praised, and the popularity of the character within the work… is simply because Yuri is cool, not because I’m cool or anything like that. As someone involved, I am truly happy to receive such praise.

Q: Rita and Raven are also ranked, but Karol…

T: That’s true. It’s unfortunate that he’s always outside the ranked range. Karol is cute though. After all, he is the boss of the guild.

Q: What is your impression of the heroine, Estelle?

T: At first, she really starts off as a naive princess who knows nothing about the world, but in the end, she has to shoulder various heavy destinies. She's one of the characters who gets stronger and stronger as she travels with everyone, and you can visibly see her growing. I think Estelle and Karol are probably the characters whose growth is most obvious. So I get the impression that she has both strength and cuteness, as well as a very feminine side. Sometimes she’s a bit air-headed (laughs).

Q: What about Judith? Her more mature conversations with Yuri were interesting. It was like they were reading between the lines.

T: Judy is younger than Yuri, but she’s the oldest female character. So, when Yuri is with Estelle, he has an older brother-like side. With Judy, they don’t tell each other their true intentions, but they have very mature conversations, as if they understand each other’s intentions. It doesn’t feel like a conversation between a 21 year old and a 19 year old. It totally feels like they’re 30 years old. It suddenly becomes more adult-like (laughs).

Q: That’s true (laughs). It’d be well-matched with a stylish bar.

T: It’s totally like a conversation they had while drinking. They don’t say things like “I was thinking of inviting you out later” or “I know, but it’s fine”, but rather, like they’re probing each other (laughs). And so, they both get up and leave their seats without saying anything.

Q: So, can you tell us about a scene or line from the story that left a lasting impression on you?

T: I think Yuri's position in the story of "Vesperia" was to give his companions a supportive push. Each member has something they’re burdened with, and when they take a step forward, they give each other a push forward and lift them up. The scenes with interactions that encourage that kind of growth have left a strong impression on me.

Q: The scene where he killed Ragou was also memorable.

T: I think the reason why Yuri is so popular is because of the strength of his decisiveness, or rather, his unwavering nature. It's the strength to follow through on the justice that he’s decided on. Also, there’s a scene where he strongly scolds Karol. I feel like it’s a strength of Yuri’s, being able to reprimand people like that, that helps him stand out.

Q: With a movie being released as well as a drama CD, “Vesperia’s” momentum is still going strong.

T: That’s true, and I’m grateful for it. In the drama CD, there was a scene where Yuri imitated Karol, and Judy imitated Estelle, which was hellish (laughs). Also, regarding the movie, I was very happy to be given the opportunity to be part of something that hadn't been done before in other titles, and it left a lasting impression on me.

TL Note: Toriumi uses a term meaning “to develop”, but I don’t know that he means he helped with the production development of the movie. Just in case he wasn’t involved in development the way we think of it, I used, “be part of”. I believe he’s referring to it as having helped develop the movie by way of voicing Yuri, thus was part of its development/creation, but I just want to avoid details being misunderstood. I’m not sure if he was or was not involved in any other specifics of its production as we think of it. Again, he may have been, but just in case he wasn’t, I want to specify this to avoid misinformation/misunderstanding, while still being clear on the term he used and why I phrased this the way I did. If I ever come across confirmation one way or another, I’ll update this.

Q: So then, the final question: What does the “Tales of” series mean to you?

T: Like a ring, it’s something I always wear. It's been that way since "Vesperia" started, and I really think it’s something I’ll always be carrying with me. It may be something that is "always there". Yuri is a role I really enjoy playing. Also, it's very easy (laughs). Although he does kill people, he does it to protect the world. The substance of the character is very true-to-life and is like my alter ego. It’s a role I’m very comfortable with.
