A ban on puberty blockers could be made permanent as the Labour Party takes a harder stance on transgender issues, The Telegraph can reveal.
Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, intends to stop powerful hormone blockers being given to children via any means, subject to the outcome of a legal hearing.
Laws to ban the blockers being supplied to children by private or off-shore clinics were passed by Victoria Atkins, his predecessor, in emergency legislation ahead of the general election.
But these are due to expire on Sept 3 and the new Government had to decide whether to pass a law to make it permanent. It is understood Labour will now seek to renew the ban with a view to making it permanent.
Mr Streeting said he would “always put the safety of children first”, adding: “Our approach will continue to be informed by Dr Cass’s review, which found there was insufficient evidence to show puberty blockers were safe for under-18s.
“This ban brings the private sector in line with the NHS. We are committed to providing young people with the evidence-led care that they deserve.”
JK Rowling backed the move in a number of posts on X, formerly Twitter, citing studies detailing reported negative effects of puberty blockers and praising Mr Streeting for doing the “right” thing.
It comes after criticism of the party for its stance on women’s rights.
The appointment of Anneliese Dodds as the minister for women and equalities sparked a row this week, with Lesbian Labour, which claims to represent “the voices of lesbians in the Labour Party”, saying Ms Dodds “doesn’t get it”.
JK Rowling, Martina Navratilova and other feminist campaigners hit out at Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to appoint Ms Dodds, who has previously said there are many definitions of a woman.
The decision to pursue a permanent ban on puberty blockers is one of the first decisive steps on trans issues made by the new Government, which is keen to fully implement the findings of the independent Cass Review.
Dr Hilary Cass, the paediatrician who led the review, has said the drugs may permanently disrupt the brain maturation of adolescents, potentially rewiring neural circuits that cannot be reversed.
Her review urged giving children “time to think” before sending them down an irreversible path because people were changing their minds up until the age of 25. It led to the NHS stopping under-18s being seen by adult clinics and given cross-sex hormones.
Helen Joyce, the director of advocacy for Sex Matters, a human rights charity, said it was “an excellent sign that Labour intends to take an evidence-based approach to child gender medicine, and to prioritise child safeguarding”.
“As the Cass Review showed, there is no research to support using these life-altering drugs for gender confusion. Mr Streeting now needs to go further, and rein in the private sale of oestrogen and testosterone,” she said.
“Otherwise, unregulated online clinics will continue to profit from desperate teenagers and young adults, who have been misled by trans lobbyists into thinking of these powerful hormones as a panacea.”
The NHS halted all prescriptions of puberty blockers with a view to starting a clinical trial, but there were fears about the number of children accessing the blockers via private online clinics such as Gender GP, which is based in Singapore.
The emergency legislation brought by Ms Atkins sought to put an end to that after a campaign to impose a widespread ban led by Liz Truss, the former prime minister.
But the decision to ban the drugs is being challenged in the High Court by the Good Law Project and TransActual, an activist group, with a hearing beginning at the High Court on Friday morning.
Jolyon Mougham, the director at Good Law Project and the lawyer bringing the challenge, said before the hearing that Mr Streeting had made his position clear to the judge.
“Wes Streeting’s position is that, subject to the outcome of the court proceedings and consultation, he will renew it and convert it into a permanent ban,” he said.
The High Court was told that Ms Atkins had overruled officials and acted on her “personal views” when she used emergency legislation to ban puberty blockers.
At the hearing on Friday, lawyers for TransActual and a young person who cannot be named told the High Court in London that the legislation made by the previous government on May 29, which prevented the prescription of the medication from European or private prescribers and restricted NHS provision to within clinical trials, was unlawful.
The Department of Health and Social Care and the Department of Health in Northern Ireland are defending the claim, and have said the case should be dismissed.

The irony behind the album Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Hi everyone, welcome to my music blog!
My name is Morgane. I am a fan of Depeche Mode, Björk, Pet Shop Boys, Tori Amos, Eartheater, etc. I love listening to synth pop, experimental, electronic and synth rock music.
I wanted my first post to be about my favorite band, Depeche Mode, and their album Music for the Masses, that I consider one of their best ones. I chose this album in particular because Adorno’s concept of “mass culture” reminded me of its title.
Music for the Masses is the sixth studio album of the English band Depeche Mode. It was produced by David Bascombe and released in 1987. This album was the only one who was recorded in France. It contains the international hits “Never Let Me Down Again”, “Strangelove” and “Behind the Wheel”.
According to the band members Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore, the title of the album was conceived as a joke.
Tumblr media
Here is a little anecdote: after Gore found an old album called Music for Millions, Fletcher said "The title's... a bit tongue-in-cheek, really. Everyone is telling us we should make more commercial music, so that's the reason we chose that title." According to Gore, the title was “a joke on the uncommerciality of the album. It was anything but music for the masses!". Contrary to the Depeche Mode’s album, Music for Millions embodied popular music since its aim was to make a lot of money. Although Gore’s comment emphasized that Music For the Masses was not meant to be a popular album, it was a success for both critics and consumers. In a retrospective review, Q Magazine found that most of the songs were "real diamonds in the darkness ... this was the point at which Depeche Mode were first taken seriously”. The Slant Magazine even listed it at number 75 in their top of “The 100 Best Albums of the 1980s”.
We find irony behind both the title of their sixth album and its cover.
On the one hand, the title implies music that a large audience is supposed to love and to be addicted to, while Gore defines Music for the Masses as an uncommercial album. It points out a major contradiction between what the title says and Gore’s opinion. Music for the Masses opposes Adorno’s concept of “mass culture” brilliantly. Actually, the audience was not familiar to the music or to the structure of the songs in this album. Sal Cinquemani, the co-founder and co-editor of Slant Magazine, argued that it showed the gloomier side of the “post-punk synthpop” scene during the 1980s.
On the other hand, the megaphone on the album cover was used during the breadth of the album release. We could see it at press events, on the cover of the singles and during the tour. Alan Wilder gave credit to Martin Atkins, who had been a Depeche Mode collaborator for a long time: "[Martin came] up with this idea of a speaker, but, to give the kind of ironic element which the title has, to put this speaker in a setting which wasn't really to do with the masses at all. It was, in fact, the opposite. So you end up with this kind of eerie thing where you get these speakers or megaphones in the middle of a setting that doesn't suit it at all, like a desert or whatever.”
“Is anyone listening ?”. That was what Depeche Mode asked and a lot of people were. Finally, they played for the masses, culminating in a huge show to 60,000 fans at the Pasadena Rosebowl.

Amelia Hansford at PinkNews:
An emergency order implemented by former health secretary Victoria Atkins, under the Tory government, banned private prescriptions for puberty blockers, which are already inaccessible through the NHS.
The medication, primarily used by teenagers under the age of 18, halts unwanted elements of physical puberty. The NHS has described it as physically reversible. Following the emergency order, the not-for-profit group TransActual, alongside the Good Law Project and an unnamed claimant, challenged the decision, arguing that it was implemented outside of the health secretary’s powers. However, the court has now decided that she acted in accordance with the law. Throwing out the case, justice Beverley Lang said: “In my view, it was rational for [Victoria Atkins] to decide that it was essential to adopt the emergency procedure to avoid serious danger to the health of children and young people who would otherwise be prescribed puberty blockers during that five-to-sixth month period.”
Atkins’ emergency order was implemented following the publication of the Cass Report, a review into the way healthcare is administered to transgender young people in England. The controversial review made upwards of 32 recommendations, intended to build upon a “holistic approach” to treatment, but was criticised for potentially making it harder to access puberty blockers. Justice Lang said the review’s findings supporting an emergency halt to the prescription of puberty blockers, with claims of the “very substantial risks and very narrow benefits associated with the use of puberty blockers” were made clear. While the report did not definitively say that puberty blockers are harmful, the judge said this was not the question that it was asked to address.
A shameful ruling by the UK’s high court to ban puberty blockers in England, Wales, and Scotland.

Game 30 For Posterity Mon, August 26 10:00pm EDT Washington @ Seattle
Starting: WASH: Atkins, Austin, Dolson, Sykes, Vanloo (Samuelson knee injury) SEA: Diggins-Smith, Horston, Loyd, Magbegor, Ogwumike
1st Quarter Ok, we played great defense on the first play but Nneka nailed a 3 anyway. What can you do? You can answer back—Slim just did. We run the feed to Shakira that worked well against the Sparks. Slim goes 3 again, she is starting out on fire. Ezi hits a 3 now and it's looking like a fun game early. This time the hi-lo goes to Stef to keep them guessing. Where has this offensive variety and discipline been the rest of the season? Slim gets a friendly roll for her 8th point in the opening 5 minutes. She goes one-on-one with Ezi now, and lays it in. Look out. Gabby Williams gets a welcome back shot deflected courtesy of Shakira Austin. I swear I can see Sami talk talk as she guards Jade bringing the ball up. Seattle close the gap on a couple DC turns. Now Stef gets a block. Nneka is playing amazing as usual. JVL for 3. And again. She misses the 3rd one but hey, take it. 24-19. Eric gets a tech complaining about no review of a face shot.
2nd Quarter Shatori hits the 3. I think we were embarrassed about the 20% from range against the Sparks. Former Storm coach Dan Hughes has been commentating alongside Dick Fain and wow, he is streets ahead of any other male commentator I have ever heard in the W. Excellent, nuanced, informed takes. Loving attitude. Can he replace Dick please? Seattle keeps stealing the ball. JVL 3. Very nice dance move by Horston. Game of mini runs right now. JVL is flirting with the Seattle staff. Engstler checks in and is given too much space on the arc—3. They leave her alone again, same result. Horston is blocking shots left and right. Engstler tech. I didn't see it. What premium package do I have to buy to opt out of hearing Dick Fain shriek? 42-43.
3rd Quarter Immediately Shakira goes down with a rolled ankle, she's out :( hopefully just this game. Outstanding blind bounce pass and score from Stef to Aaliyah who came in for Austin. Dan Hughes is gassing Stef up <3. She ties up Ezi off a rebound now, Ezi wins the tip. Jewell gets space on the perimeter and drills it. JVL tries the answer—no go, but Stef gets one on the next possession. Great move by Sykes to get to the rack. Stef: "That's so soft" to the ref after an extremely soft call when she trapped Jewell. Jewell goes on to hit a 3. Storm force a shot clock violation. Jade comes in and goes straight to the cup against her former team. Now Jade and Ezi high five after they get in a tie-up. Five consecutive turns finally stemmed by a Jewell bucket and Eric calls time. 100 of Jewell's family members are in the stands cheering her on <3 <3. Jado goes again straight for the hoop and this time makes the and-1. JVL takes a turn driving. I think Shatori just blocked the much taller Ezi, but it may have been Aaliyah from behind. Quarter ends with a 1-point lead, 56-55.
4th Quarter Sami Whitcomb hits a 3 to open the 4th. Shatori with a jumper, but Sami gets one the other way. Dan Hughes calls her timeless, which I may have to steal for my next birthday. Now Shatori gets a touchdown pass. Engstler steals and feeds Shatori again. It's Sami v Tori. Dick spitting painful facts about our closeout ability—3-17 in clutch games. There have been too many throwaways by both teams all game. Slim and Earl check back in. Slim gets her own rebound and puts it down. A Slim hard cut pays off. Nneka's shots are being rejected by the rim tonight. Stef had multiple 3 opportunities but kept passing—why??? DC has a 4-point lead with 2 minutes left. We're playing great D. Engstler comes in with a key save after Slim takes a very ill-advised shot versus two defenders. Sky keeps it within 2. Slim takes another early-clock difficult shot and misses. Nneka ties it with 55 seconds left. DC makes nothing of their possession. Seattle resets with 36 seconds. Tori pressures Jewell and the shot is off. Slim waits infuriatingly long then flails into Sky and manages to get the call with 1 second remaining. She makes the first. And the second. Timeout. Engstler gets a few fingers on the inbound pass and the Mystics win! 74-72 final.

Rishi Sunak has confirmed that RAF Typhoons shot down a number of Iranian drones overnight and said the UK’s involvement helped save lives in Israel and neighbouring Arab countries. The prime minister did not provide the number of drones hit, although the UK’s contribution is likely to have been significantly less than the 70 claimed by the US and dozens reported knocked out by Jordan over its airspace. I can confirm that a number of Iranian attack drones were shot down and we pay tribute to the bravery and the professionalism of our pilots flying into the face of danger to protect civilians,” Sunak said. Britain signed a military cooperation agreement with Israel in 2020, which remains secret, and a defence and trade pact a year later, but these are not thought to require the UK to come to Israel’s aid in the event that it is attacked by another country. Instead, Sunak described Britain’s participation as “saving lives not just in Israel but in neighbouring countries like Jordan as well”, and he suggested it was an extension of the air campaign against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Constitutionally, the prime minister can start a war or order military action without reference to parliament, relying on royal prerogative powers originally reserved to the monarch but now delegated to ministers. In 2011 the Conservative-led coalition said a convention had emerged whereby MPs would have the opportunity to debate the deployment of military forces in advance, except in the case of an emergency. Parliament’s authorisation was sought for the UK to participate in the bombing against Muammar Gaddafi’s forces in Libya in 2011, against IS in Iraq in 2014 and in Syria in 2015, but more recently Sunak declined to give parliament a vote on Britain’s participation in strikes against Yemen’s Houthis, who have been attacking shipping in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Parliament returns from its Easter break on Monday, having not sat since the US first warned of a likely Iranian attack on Israel at the end of last week. The prime minister is expected to personally update MPs on the crisis and Britain’s military assistance on Monday afternoon. Ministers are likely to face renewed pressure from Tory MPs to proscribe Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist group. I have argued for a long time that they should already be proscribed because of their actions inside and outside Iran,” Liam Fox, the former Tory defence secretary, told the Guardian. “Recent events have merely confirmed what many of us believe – that they are the toxic core of a thuggish regime. We might also ask why Iran Air are still operating daily from Heathrow and why Iranian banks still function in the City.” Bob Blackman, the Tory MP for Harrow East, said: “Iran has declared war on Israel and Israel is our ally. We should proscribe the IRGC, sequester their assets in the UK and close the Iranian embassy in London.” The shadow foreign secretary, David Lammy, renewed the Labour party’s call for the IRGC to be proscribed and called for the government to “come forward with new plans” to make it happen. The Foreign Office has resisted the move because doing so with a state body would be likely to sever diplomatic relations with Tehran and prevent direct engagement. Victoria Atkins, the health secretary, told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg Show: “We believe that the police or security services and the courts here in the UK have the powers that they need to target those people who are causing the most concern and indeed, we have sanctioned 400 individuals and entities from Iran here in the UK. “But secondly, there is a point of the value of being able to have a direct conversation with the Iranian authorities, in the way that has already happened.” Preparations for the UK’s participation in the event of any Iranian attack went on for several days last week, with Typhoons and Voyager refuelling aircraft being rebased at the Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus to provide the necessary support. ...

After Boris Johnson's Resignation, Internet Says Vote For Larry The Cat
After the resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, internet has shifted its attention to Larry the Cat. Many videos are circulating on Twitter that show the Cabinet Office's "Chief Mouser" roaming outside 10 Downing Street in London or waiting for the gate of the Prime Minister's Office to open.
Tumblr media
One of these videos, from the BBC, shows its correspondent Ros Atkins reporting live from Downing Street moments before Mr Johnson announced his resignation. The camera zooms in on Larry the Cat and a man is heard saying, "Are you asking him to resign Larry?"
The videos started a conversation on Twitter. "Personally I think we should vote Larry as prime minister. He'd do a better job than any Tory twat," said a user. "He's all I care about now," said another.
Larry the Cat's Twitter handle has also posted funny messages on the crisis unfolding in the UK.
"I am willing to serve as caretaker Prime Minister because that's frankly less ridiculous than the idea of Boris Johnson hanging around a minute longer," one of the tweets said.

Game 27 Cut and Dried Sat, August 17 2:00pm EDT Minnesota @ Washington
Starting: WASH: Atkins, Austin, Dolson, Samuelson, Sykes MINN: Carleton, Collier, McBride, Smith, Williams
1st Quarter Devastatingly, CBS has deprived the world of the commentary legends Christy Winters Scott and Meghan McPeak. Already I hate this game. How does it make sense to bring in new commentators for every broadcasting network that has rights to a smattering of games? Home commentary crews know their teams best and know their FANS best. It feels wrong to be at ESA and not hear McWin. Karlie hurts her knee right away WTF. We've had a couple early giveaways but the Lynx haven't capitalized. Shakira with a block. Stef is rebounding well. Shatori absolutely WORKS against Williams but doesn't get the net in the end. Stef goes for 3 to give us a 7-2 headstart. McBride and Collier go back-to-back with tough buckets but Stef goes again from deep. It's the Stics vs Phee so far tonight. Oof we were 11-6 and now it's 11-16…. Shatori shakes again and this time she bakes as well. Unfortunately, we don't get to hear The Coach Christy enjoy it. Not gonna lie, Shakira looks out of sorts, not great ball control, lack of awareness, miscues. NONE of these things are typical of her game at all so I have to put it down to missing 19 games. 16-22.
2nd Quarter A couple misses from the Lynx have brought us back within four as Shakira does some sort of magic to keep the ball in her hands and finish underneath. She's sorted it out, it seems! Shots are coming late for both teams now as defensive schemes work better. With that comes more fouls on and off ball. Juhasz and Ariel both have nice 3s. In my opinion, JVL is playing better person D than pre-Olympics. She does get beat by Williams, but Court put in work. Earl just DANCED beautifully for 2. Stef checks back in after a long bench spell and immediately goes for 3 to tie it. Most Likely to Tie the Game with a Three: Stefanie Dolson. Williams is going off with the midrange jumpers. Shatori says me too. Tori steals. Commentator can't say Thibault. It's a hard name no doubt but it's a name that's been in the game for decades… Name mispronunciation by announcers always gets me. Jado finds Stef who passes back in to Jade on the drive, kick out to Ariel for 3—rebounds her own and scoops to Shatori who drills the trey. It's basketball, babyyyy. We're in the lead! Carleton kills the crowd with her response. Court is still cooking. The Lynx pull back in front after a couple Mystics fouls. 39-45.
3rd Quarter Karlie Samuelson is not returning to the game. GREAT start otherwise to this half for the Stics. Forced turn, perfectly executed O, another turn off hot D. Tough break after having the ball swatted away multiple times the Lynx land a 3. Now Collier gets one. She's 8 of 11 lol. DC is now trailing by 11. Yikes, an incredibly sloppy sequence here. Aaliyah comes in and scores then plays great D on Phee….to no avail. Fortunately, Stef was due for another 3. Oh my god Napheesa. She's going to be Finals MVP when the Lynx win the Championship. Minnesota are lights out this quarter. Yet, no timeouts from Eric. Hmmm. Ok as I say that it happens. Well, the Lynx missed only 3 shots this whole quarter. 56-78.
4th Quarter Kayla McBride hits a 3 right away. Austin has a nice pass block leading to a turn but we can't capitalize. It's a 25-point Minnesota lead and this is hard to watch. I'd call it our worst game of the season but I actually think our games where we led going into the 4th and lost were worse. Stef has 2 more 3s and she's 8 of 8. So they bench her. Aaliyah gets a steal but misses the bunny, an unfortunate theme for her tonight. We've narrowed the deficit to 16 at least. 83-99 final. Minnesota absolutely outplayed us.

“Some Great Reward,” a studio album by Depeche Mode
Sleeve photography by Brian Griffin
Design by David A. Jones, Mark Higenbottam, and Martyn Atkins of T&CP Associates
Mute Records
⚜️ ARTWORK
Mute Records released “Some Great Reward” on September 24, 1984. It was released in the US on the Sire label. Pictured is the US front cover artwork photographed by Brian Griffin. [1]
Griffin was brought up amid fiery skylines and smoky aromas at Lye, England. It was once dubbed the “workshop of the world.” [2]
He now lives with his wife, Brynja Sverrisdóttir, a former model from Iceland, in London's docklands surrounded by those who earn their substantial living in the new powerhouse of the British economy, the City. [2]
It was rather different in 1972 when Griffin emerged from Manchester College of Art, aged 24, having become a mature student after a few years as a trainee draftsman in Birmingham. He worked for a few months at the Round Oak steelworks in Brierley Hill to earn some money. [2]
"Just before they pulled it down, I used (the building) as the backdrop for the cover of Depeche Mode's album, ‘Some Great Reward,’ because I wanted to give it a bit of status," he says. "When I opened my bedroom curtains as a boy, the night sky would be glowing red from its furnaces." [2]
