This is the house that keeps on giving. It’s in Baltimore, Maryland and listed for $785K.

The entrance is a sleek black & white. Shiny black walls highlight the staircase with a classic zebra runner. 

I seriously can’t tell what is mirrored and what is not, but the room does look huge. Anyway, the modern black fireplace is surrounded by a bronze-y mirrored wall.

The kitchen is in-your-face stunning. You don’t know where to look first. Look at the size of that stove.

The island is more elaborate with a marble top. They left a butcher’s block for the new owner, plus 2 elaborate chandeliers and a Victorian style tin ceiling. 

The kitchen has a huge dining area, plus a breakfast nook. 

This room off the main entrance and kitchen is the dining room. I see a glass shelf on the left, but I’m disoriented by the mirrored walls, again. 

Next, in a stupor of confusion due to the shininess of this place, we stumble into what I think is the pantry- is that a wine fridge on the right? I don’t know!

Where the hell are we now? Is this still the pantry?

A matching guest powder room. Good to luck them, finding it.

Is this a family room? Looks like they added a mantle to a contemporary fireplace and some Greek columns.

Oh, okay, so this is the other side of the fireplace in the library.

Wait. Another mirror. Is this a main floor main bd? I’m so confused. There’s a bar in here and a bathroom.

I’m feeling drunk. Where did this bathroom come from?

It has a walk-in closet. 

What in the world is this plain white bd. doing here, at the end of a striped hall?

It has a leopard bath with an orange sink, and a closet.

More mirrors. I can’t even. Let me out of here.

Nate Bergman, Kayleigh Goldsworthy and L.S. Dunes Takeover The Ottobar in Baltimore, MD

Oh, the Ottobar. An hour and some change from home for me, but it feels like a home away from home. In 2018 the Ottobar was named one of the 10 best live music venues in America by Rolling Stone Magazine. Understanding why is clear as soon as you step foot in the door.

This intimate, grungy dive bar type venue hosts everything from dance parties to burlesque shows. But I digress. 

The show is sold out and fans are waiting in the bitter cold for an hour before doors. No complaints from the lengthy line, though. The buzz and excitement about the looming show kept us warm and content. We’re let in and well, as expected, there’s no barricade (I later learned they never have them). If you’re a photographer, you know how scary the words ‘no barricade’ can be. Especially in a cozy little club like The Ottobar with a high energy crowd.

Nate Bergman

The room fills quickly with listeners of all ages. You’ve got everything from your hardcore dudes to younger gals with their parents in tow. At 7:50p.m., Nate Bergman, bluesy rock artist, casually strolls onto stage, and begins to sing his first song acapella. Dude’s got pipes from Heaven, his voice sweet, serenading and raspy (in a good way). 

Hailing from Washington D.C, he’s basically right at home at this venue. Nate strums his guitar and belts his emotional lyrics to a totally immersed crowd. Oh, and he brought Kayleigh Goldsworthy out for a duet. They harmonized angelically, covering “Dancing On My Own”, made famous by Robyn in 2010. A bittersweet banger, and man, did they nail it. Nate ends his set by hustling down the stage stairs, crooning as he makes his way through a sea of people. He invites us to come to his merch table and chat with him after the show.

Kayleigh Goldsworthy

The clock strikes 8:30 and Kayleigh Goldsworthy graces the stage once again. Beautiful and beaming (literally, she was wearing a really cute bedazzled top), this alternative folk artist’s set follows and complements Nate’s beautifully. Her lyrics heartfelt but a slightly more upbeat. Between songs, she smiles at her fans and replies sweetly to the ones brave enough to shout out words of encouragement to her. 

Goldsworthy is talented and quirky to boot, telling short stories and joking with the audience prior to each song. Her set concludes with a few special guests to support her through her final song. Yep, the boys of L.S. Dunes came out and performed her original song, “Overambitious” alongside her. Henceforth, the crowd of course lost their minds.

L.S. Dunes

At 9:35 its L.S. Dunes turn to take the stage, and boy, did they. Right out of the gate, drummer Tucker Rule plops down at his kit and takes off. The rest of the band joins in on their respective instruments. The shrieks of an excited and packed to the gills venue is comparable to a roar. 

If you’re not familiar with L.S. Dunes (I mean, they are a new band after all), you may see some faces that jog your memory. 

Frontman Anthony Green, like his band mates, has quite the musical history. Circa Survive, Saosin, and The Sound of Animals Fighting, in addition to his solo music. (Dear Child was stuck in my head for 3 days leading up to the show). Frank Iero, My Chemical Romance rhythm guitarist, also was a part of Leathermouth and Pencey Prep. (And if that’s not enough, he has a solo project called Frank Iero and The Future Violents). You’ve got Thursday bassist Tim Payne, Travis Stever, co-founder and lead guitarist of Coheed and Cambria, and drummer Tucker Rule. 

Quite literally a medley of all of my favorite bands as an emo teen, wrapped up into a perfect indie supergroup. I’ve been to an array of shows, all different genres, venues massive and tiny. The energy and stage presence this band has is unmatched, unlike anything I’ve seen before. 

The band plays harmoniously, grinning and grooving. Meanwhile Anthony darts around the stage, whipping his sweat drenched locks around to the beat of each song. L.S. Dunes performed their new album, “Past Lives” in its entirety, by the way. 

They’re at 110% for the whole damn set, it’s really incredible. The entire room was so eager to be closer to stage that consequently, you could not move to lift your arms. The night ends with the boys leaving the stage, only for the crowd to demand an encore. They return to stage and close out with my personal favorite from the album, “Sleep Cult”. It’s a beautifully haunting and weirdly romantic jam. Kayleigh Goldsworthy joins in, playing along on her violin and creating a sweet but somber ending to the night.

While their 2022 tour has concluded, (their first tour!) lookout for L.S. Dunes to dominate the nation in 2023.

I hated growing up in Howard County Maryland, and I still hate it

Mom raised me never to say the word hate. But after lab testing words like "loathe", "detest," "abhor"... "hate" is the most precise, respectfully.

tl;dr there is a lack of accessible third places where I grew up that makes life absolutely suffocating

Let me get the subjective points out of the way because, at the core, that is what colors my entire view. I had a very happy childhood in Cockeysville but our family moved to Woodstock next to Ellicott City when I was in middle school. The Baltimore suburbs were both "more suburban" (lots of forests) and lower-middle class than the area we moved into, but I felt so much loss when we moved. My parents, to their credit, were not helicopter parents and left us to figure out what to do, but this probably wasn't the right parenting style for the challenges I would have.

Objective point 1: incentives to live in isolated areas

We moved into a McMansion Lite single family, a decision that singlehandedly made me swear never to buy single family in my lifetime. It wasn't even that bad cuz right outside the subdivision were sidewalks that took you to...idk, friends, Waverly commerce, playgrou- aha! There are literally no playgrounds to walk to unless you're half a mile from the elementary school. This is a planning choice and one that has surprising cascading effects you only realize after you've moved to communities that have the amenity (more kids, more family socializing, more walking, etc.)

Howard County does have places with those amenities, ie., Columbia Association. Except! People who live there would rather be in the more prestigious school districts if they had the choice. CA has very nice amenities: trails to walk anywhere, access to Blandair, Lake Elkhorn, Lakefront, heck lakes everywhere!

But the "desirable" districts are like Clarksville and Marriottsville which are in Bumbleheck™ Nowhere. Back in the day the fastest way to get to my school friends would be to bike on MD-99. I consider myself a trendsetter because many people do this now, but back in 2003 when I did it I was the only one, and my mom was rationally incredibly terrified. People have bad incidents and there are no sidewalks at all. So in actuality, I spent the majority of my middle school hours depressed in front of the computer with the unfettered Internet.

Objective point 2: overrated

"HCPL voted 5-star library system" "Wallethub's top livable community" "Progressive ideals" "Cultural landmarks for diversity and history" "Best schools in Maryland"

I actually don't have a problem with the last assertion: by all accounts the school programs are great (barring recent transportation issues). But let's go through the others.

HCPL should be ashamed. I'm not even talking about the proposed thing next to Whole Foods. Spring Break just passed and during that week, HCPL cancelled and renegged all events. Not a single thing for kids or community members to do that week. MCPL in contrast on any given day had 50-some odd events across the system. There's a likely reason: the staff takes a spring break to coincide with the school schedule. But that just reveals how little robustness there is in the system. The library should provide for the most vulnerable in the community whose families can't afford nice spring break programs. Utter failure.

Oh and before pointing to HoCo rec as the alternative, you pay out the nose for membership. MoCo rec is free with better facilities (but this is punching down).

Livable. Progressive. Anecdote: I was shocked when we had coed physical education in middle school. In Baltimore, I'll just say it, we had real physical education. Boys did pushups regularly. There were wrestling units. Weight lifting. Gymnastics. I just didn't think I could handle the pretentiousness of coed archery and wiffleball when I landed in Howard County, I just wasn't ready. Yes, gender distinction is a pretty sensitive topic now but the need for boys to be challenged...I felt was a miss.

The progressivism seems like such a hypocritical veneer when the slogan at the time was "Choose Civility." Such a dog whistle. Howard County is decidedly upward middle class or adjacent. If you don't own a car you don't have an existence.

In terms of culture and landmarks, the literal landmark in our district was the snowball stand. I just .... please just go visit a real mixed use lot and then come talk to me.

There was an attempt to put on an "Asian Night Market" event at the Fairgrounds and it was so awful it was on every news outlet: people stuck on Interstate 70 for hours, and vendors not prepared to distribution. There is clearly demand for the bored masses to want to have fun things but the infrastructure isn't there to support it.

Here are what the county thinks are the culture areas: downtown EC and lakefront. Historic EC... could be so much better!! There is so little room for people to congregate and yet the cars cut through endangering anyone who might want to space out. I'd rather hang out in Kentlands (whose road network is decidedly tempered) during a hurricane than suffer through downtown EC on a perfect day.

Oh and let's talk about lakefront. Recall my BS-meter raging when the society only endorses its version of progressivism or diversity. It seems like the county actively wants to punch young people in the dick: you're not allowed to dance at the lakefront, and you're not allowed to be at the mall after 6 without an adult.

The lakefront is so lamentably sad now, which I'll explain in another point below.

Objective point 3: Route 40 is the ugliest ugly to ever ugly on this side of ugly

And recently designated a new cultural landmark!

Route 40 deserves its own hate section. It's possible most locals would agree with the statement that the Route 40 corridor is the heart and soul of Ellicott City.

And yet if you told a naive tourist that and dropped them there, what reaction would you expect? I think you'd get a resounding "double you tee eff."

what's the difference?

This is just such a perfect specimen of American commercial sprawl, way too perfect <🤌chef's kiss>. This area espouses what creed? "To be here, you must consume."

Where do you hang out? Like where can you kick it with friends? When I hung out with bethel kids it was in front of McD or Checkers, which were fun and affordable, but overall it did seem like in order to socialize you need to spend money, consume, and drive. I'm being completely serious when I unironically think the best third place option is the center with Sprouts Market. There's sidewalks you can walk between smoothie, gamestop, wingstop, and some chipotle.

You may have thought, "Oh! Not the center with Honeypig and trendy Cafe June?" Well to get between those places you need to first get run over by 3 minor arterials, and yea none of these businesses (even Roggenart) bother with outdoor seating cuz....... freaking Route 40.

Objective point 4: things have gotten worse

I'm lying, things have gotten so much better since I've been a kid. So many more fun places to eat and hang out.

But some bulwarks of why Howard County is "worth it" are starting to shake. Buses are failing to pick up kids so kids end up missing school. What? Turf Valley home invasion and kids mugged at Waverly pool in broad daylight. Excuse me? What's even the point of living in this desolate suburb then if we dealing with "city" problems 🤣🤣

The lakefront is a shell of what it was and can be. This past Sunday was the most amazing weather and... absolutely no one was at the lakefront. The "coolest" thing there is Whole Foods where the whole point is to get in and out with your food. The pub on the corner has no outdoor seating. No one patronizing any of the (checks notes) four businesses. I won't explicitly punch down with the infinite examples of peer counties proactively stimulating cultural life, but I've already ranted in the above points about how everything reeks of proactive suppression of life and frankly NIMBYism of folks probably just not allowing more business and development.

In conclusion

Please do not read "Howard county is the worst." It is not. It is a very decent place to live. Which just speaks to American standards of living tbh. This is squarely a personal write-up of why I hate Howard County. Over the years I got NUMTOTed to high heaven and finally have the vocabulary to identify the childhood dissonance.

My happiest memories are here. Would I have gotten into bboying without the boredom? Would I have become a Christian without the quirky friends and desolation? Would I have crumbled in the face of crazier competition of high-achieving Chinese kids in Montgomery County? How much of the neurosis is simply a function of my family culture regardless of where I lived? Did the gentle and stable environment allow me to ultimately thrive and succeed? The answer to these counterfactuals could fall on either side.

Best Places to Eat in Baltimore

Introduction

Baltimore, MD is a city of neighborhoods, and no one neighborhood has it all. But each neighborhood has its own distinct vibe, and those vibes are best explored through food. I've found the following places to be some of the best for eating in Baltimore—I've tried them all, and would recommend them if you find yourself in town!

Woodberry Kitchen

Woodberry Kitchen is a neighborhood restaurant that serves farm-to-table food. It's located in the Woodberry neighborhood of Baltimore, so you can expect to find all sorts of local produce on the menu here. The seasonal menu changes regularly and features dishes like braised pork belly with buttermilk biscuits and sorghum butter; wood-roasted quail with root vegetables; or butter-poached lobster with ramp mayonnaise and potato chips.

Woodberry Kitchen has been named one of America's best new restaurants by Food & Wine magazine, so you know it will be worth your time!

The Helmand

Helmand is a great place to get your Afghan food fixed. Located in the heart of Hampden, this restaurant serves up some of the best Middle Eastern cuisines in Baltimore. The Helmand also has a full bar and craft beer selection, so you can grab drinks with friends while you wait for your table or order takeout from their extensive menu options.

The Helmand offers several lunch specials daily. You can find everything from falafel sandwiches to kebabs on their lunch menu from 11:30 am-3 pm Monday through Friday! If you're looking for something more hearty than soup after work or school, try one of their kabobs; they come served with rice pilaf and salad greens for only $16 during happy hour every day between 4 pm-6 pm (regular price is around $19).

Bo Brooks Bar-B-Q

Bo Brooks is a great place to eat if you're looking for some good Southern food. It's located in South Baltimore, so it's not super close to any other attractions but the food makes up for it. When you walk into this restaurant, it feels like you're stepping back in time and entering someone's home kitchen. The service is quick and friendly, and their specialty dishes are delicious! I recommend getting the fried chicken wings or ribs with beans and rice--you won't regret it!

Birroteca

Birroteca is a modern Italian restaurant in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood, serving traditional Italian food in a casual atmosphere. It's owned by the same people who own Birroteca DC and Birroteca Halethorpe.

Birroteca has an open kitchen where you can watch your meal come together, plus plenty of seating at long tables or bar seats that face out onto the street. The menu includes pizzas (with toppings like prosciutto, mushrooms, figs, and arugula) as well as pasta made from scratch daily--you'll find dishes such as linguine with clams or rigatoni with pork sausage ragu on offer here too. The wine list includes over 200 bottles available by the glass or bottle; if beer's more your thing then there are 10 drafts available too!

On the morning of June 30, 2011 trash collectors were making their rounds through Macon, Georgia. When arriving at an apartment complex near Mercer University the sanitation employee found a police cruiser blocking the dumpster. Giving a wave to the officer, the truck was turned around and the worker went on to his next stop.

The police were brought to the quaint complex at the behest of Ashley Morehouse. Morehouse's close friend 27 year old, criminal law graduate, Lauren Giddings hadn't been heard from in four days. Before calling police Morehouse went in to Giddings apartment and found nothing out of place or missing, except for Lauren. Morehouse and Giddings parents, who lived in Baltimore, MD, along with Giddings boyfriend stated that Lauren had been studying for her Georgia State Bar exam and wished to not be bothered.

Once police arrived a search of Lauren's apartment was conducted. At first glance police agreed with Morehouse that everything looked normal, however, once luminol was sprayed in the bathroom that determination changed. The entire bathroom it seemed, had been doused with blood.

The dumpster in the complex was also being searched at this time. A black garbage bag stood out amongst the others, inside a womans torso was found.

While this search was going on, a neighbor was speaking of great concern for her whereabouts while being interviewed for a local news station. During the interview, Stephen McDaniel was asked if he had heard a body was found in the dumpster. McDaniel was visibly shocked stating he needed to sit down.

Upon further searching, detectives found a hack saw and a bloody bed sheet in the community laundry room Detectives later made their way into Stephen McDaniel's apartment. In there they found a master key that opened any door in the apartment building. He stated that he only used them twice, to go into two apartments to steal condoms. Also found was the package for the hack saw and a pair of Lauren's underwear.

McDaniel was taken in for a lengthy questioning lead by two Macon County detectives. Throughout the entire interrogation McDaniel seemed almost in a catatonic state, rarely moving his body, refusing food, and answering only "yes", "no", and "I don't know".

It was put together through further searching of his computer that McDaniel had been stalking Giddings for some time. Photos and videos taken outside her window of her were found as well as many searches of her Facebook account. Child pornography was also found on the computer.

McDaniel was charged with murder and 30 counts of sexual exploitation towards children.

Once in court, McDaniel plead guilty and requested that the charges of sexual exploitation of children be dropped as long as he told the courts what actually happened to Giddings.

Then he began recounting that awful night.

He states around 4:30 a.m. on June 26, 2011 he entered Giddings apartment with the master key, clad in black clothes and wearing a mask, and watched her sleep for awhile. He made a movement causing the floor to creak, waking Lauren. Once she saw McDaniel she yelled at him, "get out!" McDaniel then jumped on top of Lauren, strangling her. Lauren fought with McDaniel and ripped off the mask he wore. She screamed, "Stephen! Please stop!"

In the struggle the two fell off the bed, making it impossible for Lauren to keep fighting.

After 15 minutes, Lauren was dead.

McDaniel pulled Giddings in to her bathtub, where he left her and returned to his own apartment for the next several hours. When he arrived back in Lauren's apartment, McDaniel proceeded to decapitate her with the hack saw. He also states he cut all of her fingers off and flushed them down the toilet. McDaniel dismembered the rest of Giddings body, putting different parts in separate trash bags. The remains were taken to several dumpsters around town, unabled to be recovered because of the time frame, except for her torso.

The courts were ruling towards the death penalty for Stephen McDaniel but, instead he was sentenced to life in prison. This was due only to the fact Lauren Giddings family stated Lauren did not believe in the death penalty and would not approve of that sentencing.
