El combate que todo el mundo esperaba. Desde la era de los cuatro cinturones, no han estado en posesión de un mismo boxeador. Lennox Lewis fue el último en ser campeón unificado en 1999 A. GARCÍA Tyson Fury y Oleksandr Usyk llegaron a un acuerdo para subir al ring en un combate que supondrá la unificación del campeonato mundial del peso pesado. Desde que comenzó la era de los cuatro cinturones en 2004, no ha habido ningún campeón indiscutible de los pesados. El último púgil que en los pesados unificó los cinturones en vigor fue Lennox Lewis. El 13 de noviembre de 1999 derrotó a Evander Holyfield en su revancha por la unificación que ocho meses antes terminó con empate en decisión dividida. El duelo entre Usyk y Fury se ha convertido en realidad una vez que se conoció que ambos boxeadores han llegado a un acuerdo para pelear en Arabia Saudí. Ambos habrían firmados el contrato del combate que podría disputarse en enero de 2024 aunque no se descarta adelantarlo al 23 de diciembre. Fury: "Solo puedo ser el mejor de mi era" "Estoy encantado de firmar esta pelea. Es la más grande que podría realizarse en nuestro deporte. Los pesos pesados siempre despiertan la imaginación de los fanáticos, y no tengo ninguna duda de que este será el evento de boxeo más grande del siglo", declaró el promotor Frank Warren en una entrevista para la BBC. Fury tiene antes la pelea con Francis Ngannou (ex peso pesado de la UFC), que se celebrará en Riad (Arabia Saudí) el 28 de octubre. Entre los dos púgiles se repartirán una bolsa de 60 millones de dólares y habrá 30 más para el ganador. El ucraniano Usyk (21-0, 14 KO) mantuvo sus tres coronas mundiales del peso pesado (WBA-IBF-WBO) a finales de agosto en el Estadio Municipal de Breslavia (Polonia), al derrotar por KO en el noveno asalto al aspirante inglés Daniel Dubois (19-2, 18 KO). Usyk las había conquistad en septiembre de 2021 ante el defensor Anthony Joshua. Así fue el combate entre Oleksandr Usyk y Tony Bellew que acabó en KO Fury (33-0, 24KO) es el vigente campeón del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo (CMB) desde que ganará en febrero de 2020 a Deontay Wilder y se coronará por segunda vez tras su victoria ante Wladimir Klitschko en 2015. "Un cagón siempre será un cagón", dijo Tyson Fury despreciando a Usyk tras el combate del ucraniano ante Dubois. "Noquearía a Usyk fácilmente. Se rajó cuando Dubois le pegó un golpe bajo. Estaba rodando sobre la lona chillando", afirmó el 'Rey Gitano'. Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Frazier, Foreman, Tyson... La pelea entre Usyk y Fury entronca con los grandes momentos que han deparados los pesos pesados. La expectación sitúa el combate a un nivel similar al de otros combates en este categoría pero con la condición inédita de estar en liza los cuatro cinturones. El ring vibró en su momento con el primer duelo entre Muhammad Ali y Joe Frazier en marzo de 1971 en el Madison Square Garden. Se llegó a los 15 asaltos y ganó Frazier por decisión unánime. En 1975 la revancha se disputó en Manila en un duelo ('Thrilla in Manila') que ganó Ali como ganador por K.O. técnico al final del decimocuarto asalto . "Es lo más cercano a la muerte que he estado nunca", afirmó Ali. Así mandó a la lona Joe Frazier a Muhammad Ali Un años antes, Muhammad Ali y George Foreman protagonizaron Rumble in the Jungle el 30 de octubre de 1974. Ali llegó tras perder contra Joe Frazier y Ken Norton, mientras que Foreman había ganado sus 40 peleas anteriores. Victoria para Ali. 2020 Book List
For 2020, I made a new years resolution to read 52 books by the end of the year.... which is one of the first new years resolutions I’ve actually kept!! Here are some of my favorites, and my thoughts about everything I read.
As a note: I know audiobooks // ebooks aren’t everyone’s thing, but I read most of these through the Brooklyn Public Library using Libby, and through HOOPLA, the LAPL app. HOOPLA has a ton of stuff, and all you need is to write down an LA address to get a virtual library card. (And just saying, they don’t do anything to confirm that’s your actual address...)

The first bad man, Miranda July
This book is absolutely wild, and I greatly enjoyed it – I don’t think it’s everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re looking for something very funny, surreal and visceral, I’d recommend. I described it to my friend as like if my psyche wrote a book, or like a very true dream. I enjoyed her collection of short stories, No One Belongs Here More Than You, more - but they’re both excellent.
Killing and Dying, Adrian Tomine
This was the first graphic novel I read this year. Zadie Smith said about this book, “Adrian Tomine has more ideas in twenty panels than novelists have in a lifetime,” so I was very intrigued. It reminds me a lot of Nick Drnaso’s Sabrina which is one of my favorite (if not my favorite) graphic novels. I love the book’s minimalist style, and bits of it felt like getting punched emotionally – so I’d recommend if you’re looking for that!
Can’t we talk about something more pleasant? Roz Chast
Roz Chast’s memoir about her parent’s final years is incredibly funny and beautifully done. I think New York Jews will especially enjoy – but I’d recommend to anyone!
The Idiot, Elif Batuman
For whatever reason, this book really grated on my nerves and I was not a fan. Batuman writes about a freshman at Harvard studying linguistics and writing emails to this man I wanted to punch. A lot of people love this book, so I definitely wouldn’t say not to read it – perhaps it just triggered too much of my anxiety from freshman year of college to be pleasurable. I find it similar to Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Marriage Plot, but I liked The Marriage Plot significantly more.
Bad Friends, Ancco
Content warning for abuse/violence – this graphic novel is really dark, and the violence is quite graphic. But overall, I thought it was beautifully done – and I really love the author’s drawing style.
Fully coherent plan: for a better society, David Shrigley
I love David Shrigley – this book is really silly, and I honestly just picked it up from the library because the outside looks fun. It’s a quick read mostly made up of minimalist drawings – so if you want something not-too-serious that will make you laugh, I’d recommend.
Through a life, Tom Haugomat
I also grabbed this from the library because it looked pretty (oops). I absolutely love this illustrator (he’s worth following on Insta even if you don’t read this book). It’s a series of illustrations of a boy that wants to be an astronaut, and it’s one of the most astoundingly beautiful things I’ve read this year. There are no words, and I nearly cried at the end.
A Body Worth Defending, Ed Cohen
This book discusses the history/construction of autoimmunity, and how the idea of a body “attacking itself” is inherently biopolitical. As someone with an autoimmune disorder, I found this book fascinating, but it’s also really dense so I’d just recommend if you have a particular interest in autoimmunity.
The Hospital Suite, John Porcellini
Done by the author of King Cat, this graphic novel follows the protagonist through a series of different severe medical problems. I thought it was really well done and would recommend if you’re interested in art about chronic illness.
Excuse Me, Liana Finck
I’m obsessed with everything Liana Finck does – if you don’t follow her on Instagram you should! – and this book was no exception. It’s very funny and poignant – if you like her cartoons, you’d definitely enjoy!
Ongoingness, Sarah Manguso
My friend recommended this to me a few years ago, and I recently reread. Sarah Manguso writes about her lifelong pursuit of keeping a hyper-meticulous diary, which fascinated me as someone who used to do this, too. It’s a very quick read and made me think more deeply about the desire to constantly record ones’ life as a protection against passing time.
The Romance of Tristan, Beroul
This book is wild – I read it for a class. It’s a medieval book that doesn’t really make sense and I do not think you should read it unless you are also taking a class on Medieval Drugs.
Two Kinds of Decay, Sarah Manguso
Here, Manguso writes about her autoimmune blood disorder, and her suicidal depression, relating the experience of her first flare when she was in college. Big content warning for graphic depictions of hospitals/illness/needles etc., as well as depression. I found it interesting, but I cannot overstate how graphic and upsetting this book is.
Unfinished Business, Vivian Gornick
Absolutely one of the best books I read this year. I saw Vivian Gornick talk at Pomona and was floored. Here, Gornick writes about being a chronic-re reader, and discusses some of her favorite books and how her relationship changed with them throughout time. I found myself underlining everything, her prose is just so wonderful. I think everyone should read this.
300 Arguments, Sarah Manguso
I like Sarah Manguso, so I ordered this. It’s a set of interconnected aphorisms like “Bad art is from no one to no one.” Manguso is clearly brilliant and this book is very well written – it’s just a bit too minimalist for me. I would definitely recommend Ongoingness if you want to read something by her.
No one belongs here more than you, Miranda July
I am obsessed with this short story collection. Again, don’t think Miranda July is everyone’s cup of tea, but the stories were so viscerally weird in a way that really resonated with me.
Anti-Diet, Christy Harrison
I’ve listened to Christy Harrison’s podcast Food Psych for a while now, so was very excited when her book came out. The book focuses on (in Harrison’s words) “Reclaim[ing] your time, money, health, and happiness from our toxic diet culture.” As someone in ED recovery, this book/Harrison’s work in general have changed my life (which I do not say lightly!) – anyone who struggles with body image/their relationship with food should absolutely read this.
Women, Chloe Caldwell
I read this because a girl on Tinder told me too (lol) – it’s about a woman’s sexual awakening and relationship with this woman, Finn, who reminds me of a lot of hot women I follow on Tik Tok that wear suits and look mean. It takes a minute to get into. I overall enjoyed it, and was touched by the book at the end, but found a lot of the prose to be pretty clunky. So, would I recommend – I don’t know, maybe?
Romance or the End, Elaine Kahn
My friend recommended this book of poetry to me. Elaine Kahn is so talented and writes so beautifully – another book where I found myself underlining everything. Would definitely recommend!
How to Murder Your Life, Cat Marnell
Cat Marnell’s memoir recounts her struggles with bulimia and addiction while working as a beauty editor. I found it enthralling and hard to put down. I recommended it to a friend who had to put it down because it was too stressful. I think it’s a great book, but not for everyone.
Rubyfruit Jungle, Rita Mae Brown
If the meaning of the title intrigues you, I would definitely recommend. This coming-of-age story follows Brown’s childhood, and relationships with women. I thought I liked Women by Chloe Caldwell until I read this book. Very gay, very good!!!! I could not put it down!
A Body Undone, Christina Crosby
In this memoir, Crosby writes about queerness/disability through the lens of her experience after a bicycle accident that left her paralyzed. If you want something gay with lots of theory, this book is for you! Fun fact: Crosby is the friend Nelson writes about in The Argonauts. As a heads up, though, the descriptions of pain can be pretty graphic/triggering.
Delta of Venus, Anaïs Nin
I wanted to read something by Anaïs Nin and this is absolutely NOT what I should have read. Nin wrote this erotica for a man who didn’t like romance and wanted her to skip to the sex – the foreword is basically her ranting about the man who commissioned her to write this work. There’s a lot of (unsurprisingly) incest, as well as depictions of rape/assault. I do not recommend.
Sick, Porochista Khakpour
Sick is a memoir about Khakpour’s experience living with lyme disease, and her struggle to attain a diagnosis and proper treatment. I didn’t know anything about lyme, so found this book very enlightening. I’d add it to your list if you’re interested in memoirs of chronic illness.
Eros the Bittersweet, Anne Carson
I read this book because a character in the L Word talked about it (oops….). But wow, this is truly one of the best things I’ve ever read (thanks Marina!). Even Carson’s prose is breathtakingly poetic – she stitches together Sappho’s writing, Greek myths & critical theory so seamlessly. I felt like a different person when I finished.
Autobiography of Red, Anne Carson
I absolutely loved this book. Autobiography of Red is a love story between two men based on a Greek myth. It feels surprisingly epic, despite being a pretty short read. It feels a bit like the long-form-poem version of Song of Achilles. (If you read this book and enjoyed it, absolutely read Song of Achilles).
Norma Jean Baker of Troy, Anne Carson
I love Anne Carson, but I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the others. Maybe it’s because it’s a performance piece and I read it rather than watching it be performed, or maybe I just didn’t get it.
Hunger, Roxanne Gay
In this memoir, Roxanne Gay writes about her rape (so content warning for that, as there are very graphic descriptions), and her relationship with her body. This is one of the most brutally honest books I’ve encountered about food, body image and eating disorders – Gay does not sanitize her self-blame and self-hatred – and it’s an important counternarrative to how fatness is commonly represented in the media. I would not recommend it if you’re in the depths of an ED or early on in ED recovery because it’s pretty triggering. I think it’s an important read, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable just telling anyone to read it off the bat.
Grief Sequence, Prageeta Sharma
Prageeta Sharma is a Pomona professor who is wonderful, so I was very excited to read her book. Grief Sequence is an evocative, moving, and incredibly powerful story of Sharma losing her husband to cancer. It made me even more excited to work with her, and I would definitely recommend especially if you go to the 5cs!
The Undying, Anne Boyer
I’m not sure exactly what to call The Undying – maybe memoir, maybe autofiction? But Boyer combines narrative about her own experience with breast cancer with cultural criticism, drawing on both her experience as a poet and an essayist. This book was definitely one of my favorite works about illness I’ve read this year.
Illness as Metaphor, Susan Sontag
I found this book interesting, but not my favorite of what I’ve read about chronic illness. Sontag writes about how tuberculosis and cancer take on particular cultural symbolism – did you know that tuberculosis was associated with sexual desirability? I did not! Perhaps the piece wasn’t as interesting to me because people don’t tend to get tuberculosis anymore. If you’re particularly interested in TB/cancer, or if you’re writing your thesis about chronic illness I would read, but otherwise, not sure I I’d recommend.
Gut Feminism, Elizabeth A. Wilson
This book discusses depression through the lens of the gut, arguing for feminists to incorporate biological data into their analysis. It’s pretty dense, so I’d only recommend if depression, anti-depressants, and the politics of the gut are particularly interesting to you. But as someone interested in those things, great read!
Come as You Are, Emily Nagoski
Here, Nagoski discusses female sexuality and arousal in a way that made me realize I actually knew nothing about how female arousal works. For example, did you know wetness ≠ arousal? I didn’t! This book truly revolutionized how I think about sex/sexuality. The only caveat is that the book does center on the experiences of cis women (which the author does admit in a disclaimer at the beginning), so I hope that there are future works that touch on the same ideas in more inclusive ways.
Practicalities, Marguerite Duras
I really like Marguerite Duras – The Lover is one of my favorite books – but this book didn’t really do it for me. Duras is brilliant, but parts of it felt a bit mundane/dated. A lot of people love this book, though, so I feel like it’s just me!
The Soft Life, Bridgette Talone
I made a goal for myself to read more poetry this year, since I usually read mostly prose. This is an example of the kind of poetry I struggle reading – l am less drawn to poetry that completely strays away from narrative – and this book was a bit too abstract for me. There’s beautiful imagery, it just felt like it went over my head. But it was recommended by a friend whose taste I greatly respect, so maybe it’s for you and just no for me!
Look at Me, Anita Brookner
This book took me a while to finish. Look at Me follows a librarian and aspiring novelist in her friendship with a glamorous couple. It’s very dry, witty, observant, and brilliantly satirical. I’m very glad I finished it, but it took a while to get pulled in.
The Cancer Diaries, Audre Lorde
Lorde writes about loving women, and her experience with breast cancer. It’s a collection of entries from her journal, combined with meditations on these entries. So, so very beautiful! Also very heartbreaking. This might be my favorite book I’ve read about illness.
Zami, Audre Lorde
Lorde’s wonderful coming-of-age novel covers her life growing up in New York, and her relationships with different women. It took me a bit to get into it, but once I did it was addictive to read. Certain scenes are just so breathtakingly vivid, and I don’t think I’ve read anyone who writes as well as Lorde about loving women. Also, she went to my high school, so that part was very wild to read – definitely recommend in particular to fellow Hunterites!
Fearing the Black Body, Sabrina Strings
I’ve wanted to read this book ever since listening to Strings on one of my favorite podcasts (FoodPsych). This book discusses the historical construction of thinness as an ideal tied to whiteness – it’s very well written and illuminating. I feel like the idealization of thinness is something that is often really tolerated and encouraged in liberal spaces (*cough* Claremont colleges *cough*), so definitely recommend. If you don’t have time for the book, I’d definitely suggest checking out the podcast episode!
Unbearable Lightness, Portia di Rossi
This memoir discusses di Rossi’s experience with anorexia/bulimia, and her relationship with her queerness. I read it in a day, I was so engrossed. However, I wouldn’t recommend to anyone in early stages of ED recovery, or in the thrust of an eating disorder.
The Art of Cruelty, Maggie Nelson
If you have read other works by Maggie Nelson and enjoyed them, and are interested in literature about cruelty, I’d recommend! It’s more theoretical than her other works and it’s pretty dense – I’ll definitely have to read it again to fully ‘get’ it. But Nelson is such a brilliant cultural critic that it’s a pleasure to read anything she writes. Like “truth in art is but a feeling”?? Yes!! Go off!!
The Marriage Plot, Jeffrey Eugenides
This is definitely top five of the books I’ve read this year. I was floored when I was finished. It’s set at Brown, but so many of the descriptions of campus life really resonated and amused me. The end was heart-wrenching. The prose is so evocative. I loved it.
The Red Parts, Maggie Nelson
This book focuses on the trial for the brutal murder of Nelson’s aunt by a stranger – it’s very gruesome but enthralling. I couldn’t put it down.
Jazz, Toni Morrison
I listened to the audiobook which Toni Morrison reads, which is great. Jazz is set in Harlem in the 1920s, and though it’s pretty short, it’s incredibly vivid and haunting. It’s one of the most original and intriguing narratives I’ve encountered (not even including the beauty of the prose), and unlike anything else I’ve read.
The Virgin Suicides, Jeffrey Eugenides
I read this because I loved The Marriage Plot so much. I didn’t like this as much as I liked The Marriage Plot or Middlesex. After I finished, I thought I didn’t like it, and then I listened to this podcast called Sentimental Garbage and decided I did like it after all. I was frustrated throughout the book at how obtuse the women are, but after getting over my sadness that we never figured out why the girls killed themselves, I have more appreciation for Eugenides’ vision.
Motherless Brooklyn, Jonathan Lethem
Motherless Brooklyn is different from what I usually read – it’s the only detective novel on this list – but I loved it. It’s set in my neighborhood in Brooklyn, which is particularly exciting (and why my Dad is a big Lethem stan). It’s one of the most original books I’ve ever read, and the descriptions are astoundingly innovative and vivid. It’s also really funny! And he’s a Pomona professor! My mom is reading it too for the WNYC book club, which I believe you can still join if you want.
Pain Studies, Lisa Olstein
Another illness book! Olstein writes about her experience with migraines, and also theorizes about pain. I haven’t read any book exclusively focused on pain, so this was cool! It didn’t resonate with me as much as other stuff I’ve read, but still very good.
The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula k. Le Guin
I was very excited for this book, which is a work of sci-fi written in 1969 about a world where everyone is gender-fluid and has no sexual prejudice. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had expected to – perhaps because the main drama of the book is finding out whether this world is going to trade with another world, and I am just not very interested in trade. Sci-fi is also not really a genre I read often, so I wouldn’t do much with the fact that this book didn’t resonate.
Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller
I’ve cried maybe six times this year and finishing this book was one of them. It’s gay. It’s Greek. It’s epic. If you liked Percy Jackson and now, you’re part of the LGBTQ community you have to read it. This is the kind of book that made me worried it had ruined all other books. I think this is a perfect book, or at least the closest I can imagine.
Catalogue of Unabashed Gratitude, Ross Gay
This book is astoundingly beautiful. A friend recommended it and said it made his writing a lot happier - which was exactly what I needed! – and this description rings true. I definitely have more trouble reading poetry than prose but found this book very powerful and engaging. I read it in one sitting.
Coeur de Leon, Ariana Reines
Absolutely one of my favorite books of poetry! Coeur de Leon embodies the exact kind of poetry I really like – the language is accessible, it’s visceral, it has a narrative – and also made me feel seen. I feel like it’s also one of those books made for people that like to write, especially about love. Very much recommend.
On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Ocean Vuong
It took me a while to get into this one, and I felt for a while that everything was too depressing to enjoy it. While I do definitely want to revisit in post-pandemic times, I still was deeply moved. Big content warning though for drug abuse, death, and probably some other stuff I’m forgetting.

JIU JITSU de Dimitri Logothetis: Cage-musha
On reconnaît évidemment dans Jiu Jitsu plusieurs éléments de Predator : la jungle, des mercenaires, et surtout ce guerrier extraterrestre avec une vision infrarouge capable de se rendre invisible. La variation principale est que, comme le titre le suggère, c’est un film où la science-fiction rencontre les arts martiaux, en plus d’emprunter des codes visuels aux comic books et aux jeux vidéo. Le protagoniste est Jake (l’acteur et cascadeur canadien Alain Moussi), l’élu qui doit affronter le « spaceman » qui revient sur Terre chaque six ans lors du passage d’une comète. Il est entouré entre autres par Tony Jaa, qui brille notamment lors d’une série de combats en plan-séquence, et par le toujours excentrique Nicolas Cage dans un rôle secondaire rappelant celui de Dennis Hopper dans Apocalypse Now, mais avec une épée de samouraï! Le scénario est incohérent et les effets spéciaux sont inégaux, mais il y a beaucoup d’action et ça demeure un film de série B divertissant.
Jiu Jitsu sera disponible en DVD, Blu-ray et vidéo sur demande dès le mardi 26 janvier.

Sorti sur les écrans français le 13 avril 1955, Du rififi chez les hommes constitue, en raison de la nationalité américaine de son réalisateur, un cas particulier au sein du film de gangsters français des années 1950. Victime de la chasse aux sorcières maccarthyste, le cinéaste Jules Dassin est contraint d’interrompre sa carrière hollywoodienne après avoir achevé le tournage de Night and the City (Les Forbans de la nuit, 1950) en Angleterre. Il émigre peu de temps après en France, et se voit proposer en 1954 d’écrire et de réaliser l’adaptation de Du rififi chez les hommes. Ce projet a été conçu pour capitaliser à la fois sur le succès confirmé de films tels que Touchez pas au grisbi, sur le grand succès en librairie de “Du rififi chez les hommes���, et sur les éminentes qualités du réalisateur de The Naked city (La Cité sans voiles et de Brute force (Démons de la liberté). Cet objectif sera atteint dans la mesure où le film remportera un succès critique et public comparable à Touchez pas au grisbi, malgré une absence de stars, avant de triompher au Festival de Cannes. On sait également que Dassin a souhaité remanier en profondeur le livre de Le Breton, sans hésiter à modifier l’organisation du récit ou à supprimer les éléments propres au contexte français qui lui déplaisaient le plus, au premier rang desquels le ressentiment xénophobe contre les immigrés nord-africains et la violence envers les femmes. Le fait que le film ait été non seulement réalisé mais aussi écrit par le cinéaste américain – avec la collaboration du scénariste français René Wheeler – en fait un cas de figure exemplaire dans la perspective des négociations identitaires du film noir français d’après-guerre, tout en lui donnant un statut historique spécifique. En tant que film noir français réalisé par un metteur en scène spécialiste de l’expression américaine du genre “noir”, Du rififi chez les hommes pose de manière privilégiée la question des relations entre le cinéma français d’après-guerre et la culture populaire américaine, en même temps qu’il offre une occasion unique d’interroger la dimension transnationale du film noir : on peut se demander si le film de Dassin s’apparente davantage à un film noir américain ou à un film noir français. Avec son premier film français, en adaptant ce que François Truffaut considérait comme le plus mauvais roman qu’il lui ait été donné à lire (Arts, 20/04/1955), Jules Dassin offre à la “série noire” française ses lettres de noblesse, au même titre que le Touchez pas au grisbi de Jacques Becker. C’est la sobriété du ton qui frappe au premier chef. Dassin, évite autant qu’il se peut les poncifs inhérents au genre policier. Il se sert au contraire des attributs traditionnels du “polar” comme d’autant de prétextes à des exercices de style. Il exhibe ainsi son talent à tirer un parti hautement cinématographique de scènes ou de situations généralement traitées avec la plus plate convention. Dassin substitue notamment à l’habituelle poursuite finale en automobile une pathétique course contre la mort qui nous vaut de superbes plans de paysage. Par exemple, cette voûte d’arbres dénudés photographiée depuis la voiture que Tony contrôle avec peine, cadre dont la beauté n’oblitère en rien l’intérêt dramatique. Mais le raffinement de la mise en scène culmine dans la fameuse séquence du cambriolage, morceau de bravoure de près d’une demi-heure, stupéfiant îlot de cinéma quasi muet. A l’instar de Asphalt Jungle (Quand la ville dort) de John Huston, auquel on a souvent comparé le film notamment pour la précision quasi scientifique du cambriolage, les gangsters héros du Rififi sont présentés comme des personnages dignes de toute la sympathie du spectateur. A l’image du petit escroc pitoyable et isolé de Night and the city, le Rififi oppose le tableau d’un groupe solidaire de truands “embourgeoisés”. La puissance des liens d’amitié qui unissent Tony et ses amis constituent un ressort dramatique qui va nourrir amplement toute la violence du “rififi” proprement dit, tout en magnifiant le Stéphanois, dur au cœur noble. Mais il n’y a aucune apologie du gangstérisme à voir ici, car la logique “noire” du film soumet implacablement les deux bandes à une extermination mutuelle totale : le crime ne paie en aucun cas. Le film s’achève, de plus, sur une image des policiers qui récupèrent la valise contenant le fruit du cambriolage comme pour donner le change à quelque morale insatisfaite ou suspicieuse. Cela n’empêche pas Dassin d’adresser un astucieux pied de nez aux ciseaux d’Anastasie avec la scène où Tony flagelle Mado : alors que la bande-son livre les cris de la suppliciée dénudée, la caméra cadre ironiquement une photographie fixée au mur qui représente le couple serein au temps où il était encore uni. Le cinéaste malicieux s’amuse également à tromper les cinéphiles avertis qui ne manquent pas de lire dans le plan du ballon qui s’échappe, lors du rapt de l’enfant, une allusion à la mort de la petite Elsie dans M le maudit de Fritz Lang : Tonio sera sauvé. Ce bonheur d’expression qui éclate à chaque image du Rififi témoigne du plaisir de filmer retrouvé par le réalisateur. Il n’hésite pas à afficher son recul par rapport au genre policier dans les limites duquel les exigences commerciales des producteurs le maintiennent. C’est ainsi qu’il fait exécuter à la sensuelle Viviane son lascif numéro de chant devant un écran sur lequel se découpe la silhouette d’un gangster dûment armé d’un revolver… ponctuant d’entre-chats les couplets auto-parodiques de la fameuse chanson « Le rififi ». La fausse guitare grossièrement décorée a l’air immense à côté de l’homme qui se tient à côté. Ligoté à une poutre entre les décors d’un spectacle de boîte de nuit, on aperçoit derrière lui les pattes d’un tigre en carton et, dans l’obscurité, des cactus en papier, des feuilles de palmier et un bric-à-brac indéfinissable. La lumière qui s’infiltre à travers les interstices du plafond zèbre le sol crasseux de la cave, tandis que l’homme fixe l’objectif. Un coup de feu, un soubresaut du corps et tout s’estompe dans un nuage sombre. Quand Jules Dassin dirige un peloton d’exécution, tout est précis et sans fioritures. Cette scène n’était pas prévue ainsi au départ, mais peu avant le tournage, un acteur manquant à l’appel, c’est Dassin qui joue le rôle de César le Milanais, un perceur de coffres-forts qui sera abattu par Tony (Jean Servais) au cours du film. Tony le Stéphanois est le véritable héros du film. Ses yeux tristes ne présagent rien de bon. Après avoir trouvé une astuce pour neutraliser le système d’alarme de l’établissement, le gang met son plan à exécution. Un cambriolage époustouflant se met en place : silencieux, les voyous se rendent sur le lieu du crime, avec pour seul fond sonore la musique à suspense signée Georges Auric, qui s’arrête au moment précis où ils pénètrent dans l’appartement situé au-dessus de la bijouterie. Les quatre hommes se mettent à l’ouvrage dans le plus grand silence, enfilant des chaussons pour étouffer le bruit de leurs pas, et s’attaquent au parquet. La moindre vibration peut déclencher le système d’alarme. Pendant une demi-heure, Dassin se fie à la puissance des images et renonce complètement à la musique et aux dialogues. Auric, qui n’est pas conquis d’emblée par l’idée de Dassin, a composé une séquence adaptée au cambriolage. Mais convaincu par le résultat, il y renonce de son propre chef. C’est ainsi que la quiétude du spectateur s’efface peu à peu tandis que Jo soulève en silence les lames du parquet. Couche par couche, avec précaution, jusqu’à ce que les nerfs du spectateur soient à vif. La représentation de la violence dans le film fait l’effet d’une bombe : Tony oblige son ancienne maîtresse Mado (Marie Sabouret), infidèle à se déshabiller, avant de la battre à coups de ceinture ; l’ennemi de Tony, Louis Grutter (Pierre Grasset), traite son frère toxicomane (Robert Hossein) comme un chien. Malgré cette dureté, le film n’est pas dénué d’équilibre et d’une certaine aura artistique, portés principalement par l’admirable photographie d’Agostini. Dans les scènes intérieures, ses éclairages confèrent à ce dur univers criminel une atmosphère douce et sombre, et dans les scènes extérieures, il crée comme par enchantement de belles images documentaires annonciatrices de thrillers comme The French Connection (French Connection, 1971). La représentation directe du sexe et de la violence n’empêche pas le jury cannois d’accorder au film le prix de la Meilleure réalisation. Aussitôt interdit dans d’autres pays, Du rififi chez les hommes restera longtemps réservé à un public confidentiel. Considéré à juste titre comme un thriller extrêmement dur, il ne sera projeté dans les salles américaines qu’au tournant du 21e siècle et ne connaîtra le succès que grâce à la version sortie en DVD. Ce film pour le moins traumatisant utilise les moyens du cinéma européen pour pousser le film noir américain à ses limites stylistiques, avant que le pessimisme de l’après-guerre ne cède la place au besoin d’évasion des années 1960. Il abandonne en particulier délibérément le caractère énigmatique des premiers films de la série noire. Des virtuoses comme Kubrick et Tarantino s’inspireront de son montage parfait, mais son alliance extrême de la grâce et de la dureté violente reste Inégalée. L’histoire
Les temps sont durs pour Tony le Stéphanois (Jean Servais) qui se retrouve seul et sans argent au sortir du “placard” où il a passé cinq ans à la place du jeune Jo (Carl Möhner) qu’il a refusé de dénoncer. Son ancienne compagne Mado (Marie Sabouret) se console à présent dans les bras de Pierre Gruter (Marcel Lupovici), personnage louche, propriétaire du cabaret montmartois “L’Age d’Or”. Aussi Tony accepte-t-il de participer au cambriolage d’une bijouterie de luxe, que ses amis Jo et Mario (Robert Manuel) projettent d’exécuter. Pour assurer le succès de leur entreprise, les trois truands font appel aux services de César le Milanais (Perlo Vita – Jules Dassin), maître en l’art de percer les coffres-forts. Après de très minutieux préparatifs, Tony et ses acolytes réussissent à s’emparer du contenu du coffre de Webb en s’étant introduits dans la boutique par une ouverture pratiquée dans le plafond. Mais César offre en gage d’amour à Viviane (Magali Noël), une chanteuse de “L’Age d’Or”, une bague subtilisée chez Webb.
Le présent compromettant parvient entre les mains de Gruter qui établit des recoupements entre la récente libération de Tony le Stéphanois et le “casse” de la bijouterie de la rue de la Paix. Il décide de s’approprier, avec l’aide de son frère Rémi (Robert Hossein) et de son bras droit, le fruit de la rapine. La bande de Gruter “interroge” César et exécute Mario et son amie Ida (Claude Sylvain) qui refusent de lui communiquer la cachette du butin. Gruter fait alors enlever Tonio (Dominique Maurin), le jeune enfant de Jo et Louise (Janine Darcey) dans l’espoir d’obtenir les bijoux comme rançon. Mais Mado, indignée par le rapt de l’enfant, informe Tony que le fils de Jo est séquestré dans villa à Saint-Rémy-Lès-Chevreuse. Tony le Stéphanois réussit à libérer l’enfant et tue Rémi Gruter. Le cinéaste Jules Dassin, exilé en France pour cause de maccarthysme, tourne, un an après Touchez pas au grisbi, l'autre film "noir" qui va révolutionner le genre en France. Contrairement à Jacques Becker, il décrit minutieusement le casse d'une bijouterie. De toute évidence, le cinéma de Jean-Pierre Melville (Le Cercle rouge et même Un flic) va naître de cette longue séquence, mise en scène avec rigueur et brio. Trente minutes parfaites, quasi muettes, dont l'intensité est renforcée par les bruits, les sons, les chocs, les souffles. Dassin se parodiera joliment, en filmant, dix ans plus tard, le vol de la dague dans Topkapi. Jean Servais, bien oublié aujourd'hui, est au moins aussi bon que Gabin chez Becker. Et on garde un petit faible pour Magali Noël qui chante Le Rififi, sur une musique de Georges Auric. JIU JITSU (2020)
C'est quoi, ce truc ? L'improbable crossover fauché et bien sûr non officiel entre PREDATOR (1987) et on ne sait quoi de Dimitri Logothetis -le réalisateur responsable du plaisir nanardesque stupide mais coupable KICKBOXER RETALIATION (2018)- est là, avec un casting regroupant rien de moins que Tony Jaa -ONG-BAK (2003)-, Nicolas Cage -dont la carrière s'effrite à vue d'oeil-, et évidemment Alain Moussi -égal à lui-même-. Mêlant arts martiaux, cascades, faux raccords, répliques insensées, et scénario anémique, dur de croire que ce projet de science-fiction -si, si- tiré du comics éponyme -quelle originalité !- existe, improbable mais bien réel. Ah oui, Frank Grillo est là lui aussi. Et si l'on cite volontiers PREDATOR en parlant de ce film, c'est parce que l'antagoniste en costume de latex de JIU JITSU, le Spaceman, tente de représenter le légendaire Yautja chasseur à sa manière : guindé comme un Bioman, vous tremblerez à coup sûr d'effroi devant son casque dont la visière perpétuellement enfumée révèle parfois -trop souvent- sa vieille tête en CGI mal branlés, yeux rougeoyants et bouche dégueulasse à l'appui. Moche et nul donc, mais que serait JIU JITSU sans son Nicolas Cage déclamant à tout-va, se parant de son plus beau chapeau en papier journal lors d'un duel d'apprentissage au sabre -virevoltant sur un piano dans le sous-sol d'une jungle- pour hisser le héros à son statut d'élu ? Compilation semi-pro de cascades incessantes et de dialogues creux, JIU JITSU ose citer l'art martial en tant d'héritage venu du fin fond de la galaxie, legs du Spaceman venant tout les six ans jauger les humains de leur capacité combative en se frayant un passage via un portail apparaissant dans la Vallée des Temples : ça n'a aucun sens, tout comme l'interface du faux Predator, fabriqué de toutes pièces par un stagiaire peu cher payé pour réaliser le reste des effets spéciaux du long-métrage. Et la prophétie scandée par le vieux couple de pêcheurs du coin n’aidera en rien, EN RIEN j’vous dis ! Segmenté à l'image des chapitres de son matériau d'origine, l'aspect comic-book de JIU JITSU se résume à un générique d'introduction très laid, spoilant plusieurs scènes du film, ainsi qu'à des fondus de vignettes tout sauf icôniques tirées de l'œuvre. "Quoi ? POURQUOI ? COMMENT ?" seront les questions régulières qui assailleront votre pauvre esprit déjà essoré par l'accumulation de bêtises de la première demi-heure du long-métrage, si tant est que vous surviviez jusque-là. Incroyable pot-pourri nanti d'une production à la The Asylum, JIU JITSU est l'égal de cette comète qui survole les cieux et ne s'écrase hélas jamais. Rempli de fillers de bastonnade, mal joué, à la fois nanar et navet, ce DTV difforme et baveux ne pourra être ingéré qu'en VF, sa version originale trop sérieuse défiant l'insupportable -on se demande encore comment on a survécu- : reveals à la stupidité inouïe, bruitages impossibles, toutes les tares sont au rendez-vous pour faire de JIU JITSU un recyclage à tous les niveaux. Pas de charisme pour le groupe de combattants, ni pour la storyline de la trame, entrecoupée d’interventions foirées -le black rigolo-, et de décors naturels réutilisés à l’infini. Notre seul souhait ? Devenir amnésique comme James, ce héros qui devra contre son souhait assumer sa destinée à la con, entouré d’imbéciles : vieille resucée de MORTAL KOMBAT (1995) repompant PREDATOR sans vergogne, on réserve JIU JITSU aux vétérans du nanar ou aux beaufs qui achètent leur DTV convaincus qu’il s’agisse d’un blockbuster original. Mal aux yeux, mal au cul, mal partout : calamiteux et catastrophique, on en rit à peine... C’est quoi ce truc ?

Aérien et plus !
Pchhhhh, aurait crépité la bulle de la BD en allumant la mèche. Énergie, rythme, jeunesse, folie, générosité, précision et multiplicité. Un bonheur à l’état pur que cet album qui va piocher dans le jazz, l’électro, le hip-hop, la soul, osant le grand écart entre les résonances latines et africaines. Ils sont dix à porter le nom Nubiyan Twist. Dix jeunes artistes britanniques savamment animés par le guitariste Tom Excell. La première à nous tenir le cœur en haleine, c’est elle : Nubiya Imani Dawson Brandon ; sa voix qu’on croirait être un baume qui aurait traversé le temps et les générations pour venir jusqu’ici nous apaiser. On se jurerait au centre d’un ballon surgonflé d’hélium toujours prêt à rompre. Plus que jamais aérien. Et puis il y a une classe certaine à croiser Tony Allen et Mulatu Astatke au détour de cette Jungle Run hybride. Oui, il faut savoir courir et vite pour ne pas fendre le rythme. Fortifiant, revigorant, stimulant.

Carnets de voyages
Il y a le temps passé (3 ans). L’inspiration (prolixe). Un accident (de skateboard). Une pause cigarette déterminante (à Prenzlauer Berg). Les voyages (nombreux). D’abord celui de l’orgue Farfisa de Zach Condon. Il aura fallu à cet instrument enjamber les kilomètres qui séparent Santa Fe de New York. Puis il devint le cœur de la création de cet album. Chaque chanson a été pensée, composée, élaborée avec lui. Chelsea, Berlin, les Pouilles. Trois centres névralgiques qui ont accompagné la naissance de Gallipoli. On y entend le temps. Qui passe, vibre, se distend. On lévite de boucles de voix hypnotiques en exil déchirant, de chœurs sensibles aux envolées de cuivres exubérants. L’émoi vient des détails. Comme s’il fallait inviter notre oreille à appréhender ce qui précède la mélodie. Avant elle il y a le cliquetis, le bruit même de la mise en action. Les instruments semblent avoir une âme. On les entend crisser, sou ler, ronronner, gémir. “Gallipoli” existe par son processus. Avant la destination, le chemin.

Groovy baby
Faire entrer des ronds dans des carrés. Réussir à capturer l’essence du live, le mordant frénétique de la scène puis les fondre dans un album. Fixer la vie. 2013 : Cotonete n’y parvenait pas et faisait sa tournée d’adieux. Merci à Rustam Ospano (DJ kazakh, big boss du festival Jazzystan) de les avoir réconciliés depuis avec le chemin des studios. EP, maxi, mais pas d’album. Super-vilains a pris son temps. S’est façonné, a absorbé toute matière avant de la faire sienne. Les huit Parisiens nous chaloupent (si on pouvait rendre le verbe transitif pour l’occasion). Le combo retrouve le bouillonnement du live, la sensualité absolue de leur G.R.O.O.V.E. On sait intacte l’influence jazz-funk 70’s et le Brésil toujours pour inspiration. Super- vilains, indécents, flambants, incandescents, vifs, puissants. Piste 6 / Super-vilain wants love. Oui oui oui les amoureux ont attendu 15 ans et aujourd’hui ça va tourner sévère sur les platines.
