Native American activists under attack via cancel culture say they hope to stop woke efforts today from obliterating wide swaths of United States heritage and history.
The Kansas City Chiefs and the Boy Scouts of America both appear to be erasing traces of their Native American heritage, according to activists and to the evidence as well.
Also, America’s most famous Chiefs fan right now, Taylor Swift, is being hailed by some as the great woke hope who can force the franchise to cave to charges of racism and end its “tomahawk chop” chant.
Not in Our Honor, a Kansas City-based group, said it was “hopeful” that Swift would be an “ally” in their effort to force the team to end the tradition, according to media reports during the football season.
The legacy of popular Kansas City, Missouri mayor and Arapaho tribal member Harold Roe “Chief” Bartle could be obliterated in the fallout. He is a foundational figure in the history of both the Chiefs and the Boy Scouts — at least until he’s canceled, American Indians fear.
“It’s a woke firing squad looking to tear everything down by telling us that Native Americans and Americans need to be divided,” social media influencer Maurice the Native Patriot (@lanativepatriot), a Swinomish Indian from Washington state, told Fox News Digital in an interview last week.
“It’s become popular to think that even seeing a Native American image is racist.”
Bartle was mayor of Kansas City in the 1960s, when the AFL’s Dallas Texans moved to town. The team was renamed in honor of his efforts to land the franchise, according to the team website and many other sources. Bartle also spent much of his life in the service of the Boy Scouts. He was a champion of civil rights, according to several biographies, as well as devoted to Native American heritage. But his multicultural legacy is in jeopardy now as both the Chiefs and the Scouts are distancing themselves from their Native American roots.
“Native American history is American history,” Tony Henson, the executive director of the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA), headquartered in North Dakota, told Fox News Digital.
“This effort to divide us comes from the ‘hate-America’ Marxist crowd that wants to tear down tradition and rebuild the United States in their own image,” Henson said.
Yet the Boy Scouts are “looking to remove all Native American aspects of the program,” one Pennsylvania troop leader wrote in an e-mail obtained by Fox News Digital.
The troop is also said to be scrambling to create a new insignia to replace “a Native American chief/brave logo” that it’s been using “for over 60 years” to meet what the letter claims is a new directive from the Boy Scouts of America.
Fox News Digital reached out to the organization, which refuted those claims. “There is no national mandate from the BSA to remove all Native American imagery from the Scouting program,” Scott Armstrong, national spokesperson for the Boy Scouts of America, told Fox News Digital in response.
He said local Boy Scouts troops may have “misinterpreted” guidance about dialogue with local First Nations leaders.
“The goal is proper respect, not removal,” said Armstrong.

Gordon Baldwin (born 1932 in Lincoln) is an English studio potter.
He attended the Lincoln School of Art where he was initially studied painting under Tony Bartl; it was here at Lincoln where he was first introduced to studio potter and ceramics tutor Robert Blatherwick who influenced his work.
Baldwin later studied at the Central School of Art and Design (1950-53) and was teacher of Ceramics and Sculpture at Eton College for 39 years.
Baldwin was awarded an OBE in 1992 and an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London in 2000. He was influenced by contemporary sculpture and has worked with both earthenware and stoneware. (wiki)

COMING SOON: Bloc Party
Release Title: Silent Alarm Live (LP)
Release Date: Friday, April 12, 2019
What To Expect: You read that right; legendary UK art punk group Bloc Party is releasing a live version of their groundbreaking debut album, Silent Alarm, this Friday. Silent Alarm is arguably one of the most influential and innovative UK albums of the 2000s, incorporating elements of punk rock and electronic music. Featuring massive hits like “Banquet,” “Helicopter,” and “Like Eating Glass,” it’s a record that experienced success on a scale that can still be somewhat hard to truly wrap one’s head around.
The album was originally recorded in 2005 with the group’s first iteration of cast members: lead singer/guitarist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong. The live version was recorded over the dates of their late 2018 European Silent Alarm Tour and sees Okereke and Lissack joined by new members Justin Harris and Louise Bartle on the bass and drums, respectively, and the recordings are sure to be bursting with the energy of the ravenous crowds in attendance. The new lineup also announced a North American run of the show for later this year that will see them playing Silent Alarm in its entirety for the hordes of Bloc Party fans on this side of the pond.
Don’t miss your chance to see one of the more revolutionary musical acts of our generation as they come to The Anthem on September 16th. Get your tickets now!

LOCAL LEGENDS: WiFiGawd
Release Title: WiFi Season Vol. 2 (LP)
Release Date: Monday, April 8, 2019
What To Expect: DC rapper WiFiGawd has accomplished more in his last two weeks than most young MCs do in their entire career. He and his partner-in-crime, The Khan, co-headlined a packed-out show that helped earn them a feature in a Washington Post article. They then popped out and performed at both of Earl Sweatshirt’s recent DMV tour stops, and to top it all off, his bass-heavy banger, “You Can’t Stop Me,” was used in the series finale of Comedy Central fan-favorite show Broad City. Still, though, he wasn’t satisfied, and he announced last week that he’d be putting out even more new music today, and I can only hope that it is currently blasting through your headphones or speakers of choice as we speak.
His projects tend to stick with a consistent style and theme throughout, but that doesn’t mean that WiFi can be categorized by any particular genre or even mood as an artist. Like how he can glide on the mellowed-out beats of Tony Seltzer on their joint-mixtape, Heat Check, while still being able to flow on the trapped-out tracks of his WiFi Season tape from 2016. His new project, WiFi Season Vol. 2, will most likely follow the lead of its predecessor, but you never know what you’re going to get when it comes to WiFi. He doesn’t appear to have an off switch, putting out SEVEN full-length albums in 2018 alone, and he most definitely hasn’t shown any sign of taking his foot off the gas so far in 2019. If you don’t want to fall behind in the DMV rap game, you best plug yourself in to WiFi ASAP.

WILD CARD: Anderson .Paak
Release Title: Ventura (LP)
Release Date: Friday, April 12, 2019
What To Expect: Anderson .Paak has always proudly claimed his California roots. His upbeat, soulful songs perfectly personify the vibrant vibes of the The Golden State, so it’s more than fitting that his first three studio albums were all named after classic Cali beach towns (2014’s Venice, 2016’s Malibu and Oxnard which dropped late last year.) The latter of the three was executive-produced by Dr. Dre and showed a more refined, classic approach to his sound, with the legendary producer’s west coast influence making itself quite apparent throughout.
While Cheeky Andy fans everywhere have become accustomed to his cyclical album-release schedule, he surprised many when he took to social media in mid-March to announce a new album titled Ventura that would be dropping this Friday. The announcement was quickly followed by the release of the project’s lead single, “King James,” a track that sees .Paak speaking his mind on some touchy subjects while challenging society to address these topics head-on, doing all of it over an insanely funky bassline that mesmerizes listeners from the start. The uber-talented singer-drummer-everyman has added a new, insightful aspect to his songwriting that should make Ventura as potent and purposeful an album as any of the records he’s blessed us with up to this point. Get hip to .Paak’s wavy style and check out Ventura when it hits the shelves this Friday.

Hair Hues of Radiata Stories
Here is the complete list of all the Radiata Stories characters (both recruitable and NPCs) taken from Fuck Yeah Radiata Stories and sorted by hair colour. There are a couple things I want to add.
First off, while most of the characters fit neatly into one of the eight categories, there are some characters whose hair colour was more ambiguous (i.e. dark blonde vs. light brown hair). I placed them where I thought they were best fit.
Black and blue are the same category because some of the black-haired characters like Cairn have a bluish tint and technically speaking, black pigment is really just a dark blue anyway.
There are some characters who are either bald or have their head covered so you can’t tell the colour of their head hair. Instead of classifying them as bald or unknown, I classified them based on the colour of their facial hair and eyebrows. This is why Dynas is in with the brunettes instead of the baldies.
While I could have made a separate category for pink hair, I ultimately decided it should just belong with red/orange because pink is just light red anyway.
Overall, there is a wide, diverse spectrum of hair colours and not all characters fit perfectly into their respective category. So if you think certain characters are miscategorised, well that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it.
Long post under the cut.

On New Year’s Eve of 1988/89 my friends Chris, Bryan, Big John, Mark (nicknamed “Wagon Ass”), Tony, and I piled into Tony’s sister Shari’s Baja Bug with her at the wheel. Bryan and Chris shared the front seat, while Tony and I were wedged between Wagon Ass and Big John, and breathing in shifts. We were headed to a party in Springfield that Shari had heard about at an X-Piracy show (parenthetically, their guitarist Robb was the son of our second grade teacher).
The party was in somebody’s barn and adjoining RV garage. A makeshift wooden stage had been slapped together on top of hay bales in the barn and a fairly competent band was playing very tight Kreator and Nuclear Assault covers when we arrived. I was suitably impressed when they left the stage and a second band started playing. The barn’s packed earth floor made a pretty good platform for the pit and stacked hay bales made great alternate stage diving spots, keeping us off of the stage and out of the band’s hair. (It was the 80′s so there was a lot of it to worry about.)
The kegs and the coolers of Boone’s and Bartles & Jaymes were in the RV garage, between a number of chairs and couches. It was a very, very impressive setup for a small town Oregon high school bash. I still count it as one of the five greatest pits I’ve ever been in (and I was at Memorial Colosseum for the 1991 Clash of the Titans).
I’m telling you all of this to set the stage for how I met the woman I’ve been thinking about tonight. She was my first New Year’s kiss. It’s been years since I’ve thought about her but I saw the second band’s name in a YouTube sidebar and it all came back to me.
I was taking a break from flipping myself off of hay bales to “enjoy” a can of Hamm’s when a girl raced to hide behind me, looking fearfully toward the door she’d just come in through. “Hide me,” she demanded, placing her hands on the back of my shoulders to keep herself centered behind me. I remember noticing that she was clever enough to hide them under my hair as she did so.
While I was still processing this turn of events an absolutely fucking huge guy came raging into the RV garage, bleeding heavily down his face from his hairline. I didn’t know yet that even trivial scalp wounds bleed much more severely than a comparably minor injury would anywhere else on the body. As a result the situation had a sphincter-cramping gravity to it that was only amplified by the broken, bloody Boone’s bottle in his hand.
“Alright, motherfuckers!” he bellowed. “One of you sons of bitches hit me with this bottle and when I find out who I’m going to shove it up your ass!” I was standing directly in front of him so he stared down at me first and stepped closer. “Was it you?!?!” he demanded.
Confused by terror, all I could say in reply was “Me who what?” My jackass brain had said exactly the right thing, fortunately. Asking him what he had just explained at the top of his lungs was enough to confuse him enough to deescalate the situation somewhat. He stated, calmly and rather matter-of-factly, “This” as he pointed at his bloody scalp.
“Oh,” I replied. “No, man. That was pretty shitty, though, huh?” He nodded in agreement and looked down at the bottle in his hand. His face sagged from rage to drunken melancholy.
“Why would someone do that?” he asked, sounding near tears.
At that moment the girl I’d been unwillingly hiding stepped from behind me and addressed him.
“I did it, Doug. I fucking did it. You fucked my cousin in my fucking car, Doug!”
I could see it all coming back to him and then he just nodded at her and started mumbling to himself as he turned and walked out the door. She took my can of Hamm’s and took the last drink from it. We sat down on one of the couches with fresh cans of beer a bit later and ended up making out for the rest of the night. I’ve never seen her again and nobody I asked later knew her name.
Sometimes I wonder about various people like her, who’ve flitted through my life like that, only staying long enough to give me another story.

The Yellow Birds review – Iraq war PTSD made beautiful but baffling
French director Alexandre Moors has a strong cast and excels at creating mood. Alas, his big reveal cannot dispel the fog of the Iraq war
Tumblr media
Terrence Malicks The Thin Red Line proved that you could make a beautiful movie about war. The Yellow Birds, a Sundance premiere from French director Alexandre Moors, is the first attempt at a beautiful movie about post-traumatic stress disorder.
The most memorable parts of this Iraq war drama are those detached from the overall story. The Bible-quoting soldier pouring salt over a scorched battlefield, the decision-making when a patrol group discovers a body bomb, a pre-assault interview in which soldiers are asked if this is the most important day of their life.
Moors, whose last effort, Blue Caprice, was a spectacular and surreal examination of the DC sniper incident, excels at creating mood. He has a nose for unorthodox camera placement, shooting from the inside of mailboxes or roving around the sides of convenience stores as the painted brick walls take on an inexplicably ominous quality.
But in time Yellow Birds story threatens to ruin the whole experience. A diced-up timeline means rooting through each scene for clues, but three main characters begin to emerge. Alden Ehrenreich and his enormous, sad eyes is Pvt Bartle, who is tasked by Sgt Sterling (Jack Huston) to keep an eye on mamas boy Murph (Tye Sheridan). The kid can shoot and run fast but, the sergeant is quick to confess to Bartle, he just isnt made for this place.
This place is Iraq, with an extra layer of haze over its fog of war. During the new recruits first mission they may or may not have killed a carload of civilians. Attacks come at all times and without warning, even at a Christmas party.
Back home, Amy and Maureen, Bartle and Murphs mothers (Toni Collette, sarcastic, Jennifer Aniston, all business), worry about their boys in different ways. Bartle makes it back but spends most of his time in bed or drinking. Murphs disappearance sends Maureen on a quixotic run at the US army for more information. She carries a leather binder bursting with maps and letters to a fruitless meeting with her congressman, clinging as best she can to a semblance of hope.
Though Anistons performance is fine, her story arc is dangerously low on oomph. Watching Ehrenreich guzzle beer and hide his face in his pillow is, weirdly enough, oddly compelling. Seeing the battle-worn fighter devolve into a bratty teen in the safety of his mothers house is just about the saddest representation of PTSD put to film.
Clearly theres something no one is telling us about what happened to Murph, but the big reveal is something of a disappointment. Unless this is some grand meta statement about the complexity of war, the ending offers more befuddlement than closure. Perhaps one must accept that we shouldnt second-guess these men until we do a mind-scrambling tour against Iraqi insurgents ourselves.
Yellow Birds goes heavy on the brooding, and even though a lot of it looks gorgeous and carries the whiff of great importance it is ultimately stunted by a central event that isnt worth the mystery that surrounds it. While many sequences in Yellow Birds are striking, overall it fails to take flight.

PODCAST: Mark Reddy.
‘Art Director’ is an unhelpful title. It has nothing to do with Art and very little to do with directing. Some think it’s about making stuff look cool, I think it’s about communicating at speed. We work in a medium people are actively trying to ignore, so we can’t hang around. Art Director’s can only communicate quickly if the understand: a) Their basic toolkit; photography, film, illustration,…

Beginnings
Everyone knows that a journey begins with the first step. A harder question to answer is when that step is taken.
Today is my first day as a full-time indie game developer, which is something I have dreamed about for two decades, but never dared to actually do. I have quit day jobs before, but somehow it was much less scary to be unemployed and do nothing than to follow a dream and risk failing. This time around I have promised myself to work on KEPLE until it can be considered a success or a failure, no more limbo! So I have definitely taken a step today, but probably not the first one.
I remember playing Crusader: No Regret with my best friend when we were kids and just being floored by the level of detail in the game: A full motion intro sequence that looked to me like a Star Trek movie, blinking consoles, pipes and levers, robots, elevators, real actors portraying rebels and villains. Everything felt real, a whole universe shipped on a shiny CD-Rom. And the first thing you saw when you started the game was this beautiful swirling Origin Logo, saying “We create worlds” and the title “A Tony Zurovec game”.
I was hooked! I wanted nothing more than to learn how to create worlds. And I wanted to have my name up in lights like that. I can’t say precisely when that epiphany happened, but 1998 became the founding year of Paranoid Software. The company’s first major release was a game called Lex, which is currently stuck on a floppy disk somewhere (for lack of a floppy drive to read it).
Like any successful product, Lex immediately received a sequel, creatively called Lex 2: The endless war. Just like in the first game, the objective was to reach the exit of each level without stepping on any mines:

Yes Mr. Freud, those are mines.
And just like that, I got my name (and Peter’s, who did the graphics and whose last name I misspelled [sorry]) up in lights:

However, in a tragic twist of fate, Lex never left its floppy disk and thus didn’t have quite the impact on pop culture that I had hoped for. I wasn’t satisfied and I wasn’t done making games.
Now I’m finally actually making games for real for real (okay and paperwork and blogging and writing a thousand impressums). I’ll be using this blog to ramble about anything related to the process, such as news about KEPLE, the experience of working from home and handling the business side of things.
I would love it if you came along for the ride!
Cheers, Bartl
