『聖なる証』(2022年、英国、原題:The Wonder)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

(ID: Druze and Israeli flags connected, and a writing in Hebrew says "our heart's with Majdal Shams". Above that, a white on black writing "we all pray for the fast healing of the wounded. Our condolences to the families of the murdered./END ID origin: Tom Wegner, FB)
Tumblr media
A direct hit in Majdal Shams - a Druze town in the Golan, the northern part of Israel.
Tumblr media
Within an hour, over 100 rockets were launched at Israel from Lebanon, by the terrorist organisation Hezbollah.
Tumblr media
One of them landed in a soccer field, causing over 30 casualties, at least 10 murdered - mostly children.
Tumblr media
(I have many things to say, about that and the connection to everything that's happening in Syria and Jabel al Druze.
But this post isn't about it. It's about sadness, and loss, and prayers for the wounded.)

Mid-century modern design "embraced a more human aesthetic"
Tumblr media
More than 70 years after its birth, the popularity of mid-century modern design and architecture shows no signs of abating. This overview by Penny Sparke kicks off our series about the movement. Mid-century modern design is hard to pin down. As soon as you think you have grasped it, it re-invents itself. Unlike the late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture and design movements – arts and crafts, art nouveau, art deco, and Bauhaus – which are all linked to specific time periods, places, and visual styles, the definition of what constitutes mid-century modern is in constant flux. Also, while all the earlier movements have been revived from the 1970s onwards, they have tended to come and go. Mid-century modern's rebirth, however, has been in place since the 1990s and, three decades later, is still going strong.
Tumblr media
Mid-century modern design, like the Eames House, is still popular. Photo by Leslie Schwartz and Joshua White, courtesy of Eames OfficeAntique shops and auction houses are full of boomerang-shaped coffee tables with spindly metal legs and lightly decorated ceramic and glass items – the prices of which continue to soar – while popular home magazines across the globe show us easy-to-live-in interiors filled with elegant Danish chairs, sculptural room dividers, patterned textiles, modern paintings, and sprawling houseplants. Mid-century modern design usually associated with the home If we can say anything definite about mid-century modern design, it's that it is usually associated with the home rather than the workplace, and that it manifests itself as architecture, furniture, textiles, and as decorative ceramic, glass, and metal items. While they can all be looked at in isolation, they are better understood as ensembles. Moving beyond the austere modernism of the 1920s and 1930s, mid-century modern design embraced a more human aesthetic while remaining aggressively forward-looking. The adulation of the machine was replaced by an affection for the organic forms of the natural world.
Tumblr media
'High' mid-century modern design in Scandinavia included Josef Frank's print designs, seen here on a curtain. Photo courtesy of Svenskt TennAlways optimistic, the style emerged to offset the austerity of the post-war years and symbolised the importance of economic and cultural reconstruction. By the late 1950s, many countries in the developed world had developed their own versions of it. While its roots were in Europe and the USA, as a popular domestic style it quickly spread further afield. Many questions remain, however. When did it start and finish? Where did it originate? What does it look like? Who are its designer heroes? Scandinavian mid-century modernism "reached its full potential" post-war In many ways, the Scandinavian countries can be seen as the home of what we might call "high" mid-century modern design, as opposed to its later, more popular manifestations. There were early signs – in the form of Iittala's lightly engraved glassware of the 1920s, designed by Simon Gate and Edward Hald, and the work of the Swedish-based architect-designer, Josef Frank, described as bringing in a new "sanity in design" – that Scandinavia wanted to humanise the stark, tubular steel designs emerging from Germany.
Tumblr media
Hans J Wegner's Wishbone chairs are among many Scandinavian design icons. Photo by Tom RossScandinavian mid-century modern design reached its full potential in the post-war years. In the form of sleek items of Danish furniture designed by the likes of Hans J Wegner and architect-designer, Arne Jacobsen; elegant ceramics and glass pieces, designed in Sweden by Gustavsberg's Wilhelm Kåge and Orrefors' Vicke Lindstrand; airy textiles created by Sweden's Astrid Sampe; and the dramatic forms of Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala's glass sculptures, the concept of Scandinavian Modern was celebrated worldwide. Many of the designs have become iconic: Wegner's Wishbone bentwood-and-rope chair of 1949, for instance, still graces many a fashionable dining area, while, with its three slim steel legs, Jacobsen's moulded plywood Ant chair looks as modern today as it did back in 1952 when it was first produced. Italian designers rejected the past While Scandinavian mid-century modern design was about everyday family life and democracy, Italy's version was all about high style. The furniture, lighting, and decorative items created by Gio Ponti, Franco Albini, Marco Zanuso, Gino Sarfatti, Piero Fornasetti and others inhabited chic interior spaces.
Tumblr media
Gio Ponti's Superleggera chair (top back) represented optimism. Photo by Luc BoeglyNone of them represented the optimism that was in the air at that time more than Ponti's little Superleggera chair, produced by Cassina in 1957. Its light, tapering legs and woven cane seat rejected the weight of the past and looked enthusiastically to the future. The mid-century modern lifestyle dominated in the US Across the Atlantic, American designers Charles and Ray Eames, Finland-born Eero Saarinen, George Nelson, and Harry Bertoia also embraced the new, unencumbered lifestyle. On the West Coast, the Eameses created a home for themselves – Case Study House 8 – which epitomised a new life that was lived as much outside as inside, and which was as comfortable as it was modern.
Tumblr media
Harry Bertoia's Diamond chair "was as much about sculpture as it was about sitting". Photo courtesy of KnollTheir leather and moulded rosewood lounge chair and ottoman, originally designed for filmmaker Billy Wilder, epitomised that attractive combination. However, Bertoia's gridded metal chair, with its leather cushion, of 1950-1, was as much about sculpture as it was about sitting. Britain's Contemporary Style attracted manufacturers and retailers Great Britain quickly followed. Lucienne and Robin Day, Ernest Race, and John and Sylvia Reid were among the protagonists of what the British called the Contemporary Style. Manufacturers, such as Ercol, and retailers, such as Heals, joined their ranks, while the producers of decorative glass and ceramics items employed designers to create new, exciting wares for them. With its lightly decorated surfaces depicting abstract organic forms inspired by the natural world, Jessie Tait's Primavera dinner service for Midwinter, for example, evoked a new world miles away from the traditional dinnerware that filled so many people's cupboards. The revival of mid-century modern design While the mid-century modern design movement owes its origins and meanings to the pioneering designers working in Scandinavia, Italy, the USA and the UK in the 1940s and 1950s, from the perspective of the early 21st century the term embraces a much wider, ever-evolving, range of designs.
Tumblr media
Robin Day's Forum seating design represents Britain's Contemporary Style. Photo courtesy of Case FurnitureIn today's vintage furniture stores, pieces by Jacobsen and Eames sit alongside Italian plastic chairs by Vico Magistretti and Joe Colombo from the 1960s and chunky German ceramics from the 1970s. While different in style, for today's consumers, the designs from the 1960s and 1970s embrace the same spirit of modernity and optimism as the earlier pieces. That spirit died, arguably, when, from the 1970s onwards, the cycle of retro styles – from arts and crafts to art nouveau to art deco to Bauhaus – came into being and optimism was replaced by nostalgia for past models of modernity. By the 1990s, it was mid-century modern's turn to be revived. Seemingly, however, it managed to buck the trend of ever-changing fashionable retro styles as, in the mid-2020s, the power of that historical design movement remains as strong as ever. The optimism of its early protagonists still speaks to many people who seek to remain upbeat in the face of countless contemporary challenges – from the climate crisis to economic inequality, to migration, to the threat of global war. There are no signs as yet that that power is beginning to fade. Top illustration is by Jack Bedford.

What, in your opinion, are the best and worst "modern" attempts to create new Pulp Heroes?
I’ve gone on a bit on the ones I think are the best modern attempts, the successes that should be studied to anyone who wants to write a pulp hero. Hellboy is easily the most successful of them by a large margin. Alan Moore’s done some incredible work with pulp heroes on Tom Strong and Night Raven. Venture Bros is one of my top 3 tv series and it did a lot of incredible things with pulp-based characters. Matt Wegner’s Grendel is a great example of a modern day Fantomas. Netflix’s 2021 Lupin series I’d also strongly recommend. There’s others I could mention, or other examples of media that people call pulp, but off the top of my head, based on original or modern characters only, those are the ones I’d mention. Dan Schkade’s Lavender Jack is the one I think provides the strongest baseline, in how it created an instantly timeless, appealing character and world built from the past but very clearly minded to the future, which I think is not just far more interesting than just retreading past tropes, but it’s also much more in keeping with the spirit of the pulp heroes in their inception. These characters were never supposed to be stuck in “retro” trappings.
In that regard I don’t actually have much bad to say about “modern” attempts to create new pulp heroes, because by and large I think creating new pulp heroes is a good thing that should be done more often, and it’s largely the modern stories with the “old” pulp heroes that I find frustrating. “Bad” modern pulp heroes are usually just ones who soulless imitate the old ones or just have nothing to do with them besides superficial designs, and those ones largely don’t succeed in the slightest.
For some of the “modern” pulp heroes I don’t like: While it’s a good comic made by people with an excellent industry record, I’m not a fan of Matt Fraction’s Adventureman. Every flashback sequence in it focusing on the “old” Adventureman is a pulp pastiche written by someone who's either never read a pulp story or is intentionally overplaying it for comedy. Fraction’s made it clear that his appreciation for pulps is ironic at best and it’s clear in the comic that the “pulp” side of it is just kitschy visuals he applied as a hook a story that’s got nothing to do with them. It’s quippy, obnoxious, every character talks the same, and the most genuinely appealing part of it to me (protagonist is a deaf single mom) hasn’t factored into anything, since the protagonist got “cured” of her disability and separated from her kid.
Brubaker’s Incognito was pretty lackluster past the middle, in fact it lost steam partially because it shied away from it’s central conceit and started going deeper and deeper into it’s pulp inspirations, which just made for shoddy storytelling, going from a sleek crime story into forgettable nonsense. It’s a perfect example of why the best modern “pulp heroes” or pulp stories are the ones who stop trying to be like the ones of the past, but instead look into their successes and potential as the basis to tell cool new stories.
Tumblr media
But I acknowledge that both of these are good comics with great things about them, and there are a lot of “pulp” inspired comics or novels out there who are considerably worse. There’s any number of dumb, boring, derivative “new” pulp stories to pick from, but nobody cares about them, so why should I?
It’s hard to really narrow down a true “worst” modern pulp hero partially because the worst of the “new” pulp heroes tend to be largely forgotten, and people already tend to have different definitions as to what a pulp hero even is so there’s gonna be much more contention than there is for superheroes.
If you want true awfulness though, the one “modern” pulp or pulp-inspired character I think is absolutely terrible and the worst of the lot, the one that I personally hate the most, I’m sadly going to have to point you to a Brazilian character by the name of Doutrinador (translated officially as The Awakener but that’s not what his name actually means, and I’m not using it. I’m not dignifying this character with a proper translation or whatever “cool” name they gave him overseas).
Tumblr media
You know how people talk about the Punisher attracting the worst kind of fan and how the character’s sort of been tainted by that association? How he’s painted as a patched-together homunculi of just the absolute worst and most violent reactionary fantasies, and even though that’s not the reality of most Punisher comics, it’s still so strongly associated with his image that Marvel has to walk on eggshells when dealing with the character?
Doutrinador is like The Punisher, except played with absolutely zero self-awareness, written intentionally to capitulate to all the trogolodytes who dream of being in a situation where they get to shoot people with impunity. Doutrinador is not just Diet Punisher, he is school-shooter-fantasy Diet Punisher. Frankly I wish I could not consider him a pulp hero, but there’s too many ways his concept intersects with them that I would be hypocritical not to.
Summary of the character: Miguel is a federal agent of the "D.A.E." ( "Special Armed Division"), and a highly trained expert with weapons. After his daughter gets hit by a stray bullet and dies, unable to receive medical assistance due to the hospital's poor infrastructure, he begins a personal journey of vengeance, and assumes the identity of a masked vigilante. The "Awakener" decides to do justice with his own hands exterminating politicians and businessmen of corrupt construction firms. His biggest goal is to fight a gang of politicians and bandits who took the lead in Brazilian politics, and began to govern the country thinking only of their own interests.
On paper this just sounds like a generic superhero backstory, with the most promising part of it being the fact that he’s purposefully targeting corruption, as it was corruption (underfunded public hospitals) that led to the death of his daughter. The execution on the film itself is already terrible, to start off. It’s badly acted, poorly paced, the fight scenes are brisk and shoddily edited, and the writing is poor at best when it isn’t insulting.
Where as in the film, the character targets fictional, cartoonishly one-dimensional evil politicians, the original comics had the character actively killing or torturing real politicians, like ex-president Dilma Roussef and senator Renan Calheiros. In the comics, the character was said to be a 50-to-70 year old man, whose backstory stated he had been active during the military dictatorship period of Brazil. And in case you don’t know what that is, please just look it up. Better yet, look up the death tolls of people who were tortured and killed during it, to say nothing of the Native genocides, or the fact that our current president was a well-known torturer during this period. I have friends with family members who were tortured during this period or outright killed, and there’s a lot of people active in Brazilian politics nowadays who either deny the dictatorship happened, or actively want to bring it back, with a shocking amount of public support behind it.
The comics never condemn any of this, they just state that this is part of the character’s background. I cannot stress enough how this is possibly the absolute worst backstory they could have possibly given this character short of him being an outright Nazi, and they changed it for the film with good reason.
The movie does an incredibly poor job at making him sympathetic even before he becomes the Doutrinador. He openly disdains his job as an officer when it doesn’t provide him the action he seeks, even when his daughter greatly looks up to him. He’s a divorced cop who begrudingly shares custody of his daughter with his ex, and when he’s with her, we see him being negligent, even ignoring her dietary restrictions (which isn’t nearly as minor of a problem as you might think it is, those can and will kill people if not paid proper attention to, it’s actual child abuse to ignore them). His daughter dies when, contrary to the insistence of her mother, he takes her to a soccer game and she gets shot. And the minute his daughter dies, one melodramatic sequence later, he’s immediately getting to work torturing and murdering a governor.
Brutish, crass, misogynistic and cruel, he frequently abuses his authority when dealing with his one partner, and although the movie is painted by it’s fans as “morally dubious”, all of it’s attempts to question the protagonist’s morality are perfunctory at best, merely set-ups to be dismissed when he inevitably does something cool and gory that we’re supposed to cheer. The movie is not at all ambiguous about it’s worship of the titular character and the morality he embodies, it’s just not well-written or thoughtful enough to explore it in any meaningful or interesting way.
Tumblr media
(And aparently this is what the current comics of the character are about. “The Red Virus”. Oh, fun fact, you look up at the character’s current publishers, and the first thing you’ll see is that they are boasting about publishing Chuck Dixon’s Alt Hero. Fun.)
If this is all starting to sound like Doutrinador is a political comic, it’s not. Even if I somehow agreed with the politics that it’s very clearly endorsing, even if it’s not gutsy enough to say them outloud, I would not like this comic, because it’s not a political comic. It’s very clear that the creator wants it to be, but to call it a political comic implies that the comic has any point to make, that it has anything resembling a discussion of political views, that any brains thought about what sort of relevance or power this character could have had. But there’s none here, this is just murder porn. If Doutrinador was an American character, by now he’d be gunning down Asian businesses to stop Covid zombies and bashing AOC’s face against a window after she would cackle about secretly infecting college campuses with them. It’s not a political comic, it’s politics as set dressing to play out violent revenge fantasies.
Doutrinador also pisses me off personally because this is a character so rotten, his very existence poisons the well of everything he’s related to. The argument that pulp heroes and superheroes are fascist power fantasies at core, that they are just jackbooted thugs in colorful suits with no room for humanity or kindness, an argument I vehemently reject and will argue in length against, only has a leg to stand on because of characters like Doutrinador. Because of people that support this character, who find themselves vicariously enjoying in him all the stuff they also wanted Batman and The Shadow and Punisher and Rorschach to do. Because of the argument that he’s just like them, except he says the quiet parts out loud.
It’s not any more “right” of an argument than arguing Homelander or Plutonian or any of a billion evil Supermen out there, whether played intentionally or not, are just like the real deal except they say the quiet parts out loud, but there’s a kernel of truth in those characters, something they do that picks at the real underpinnings of the real deal, that makes them uncomfortable, that makes you look at the originals a little differently. I’d argue Doutrinador could very well be one of most extensive and painstaking teardown of the Dark Avenger archetype ever made in that everything he does seems to be an argument as to why those characters suck, except for one, he’s not, there’s been countless better ones that were far better written, and two, that’s giving too much credit to this piece of shit character.
So yeah, that’s part of why I’d argue Doutrinador is the worst. The worst in terms of quality, because the film and comics are genuinely terrible, and the worst in general, because nothing about this character is salvageable. I cannot separate him from the other pulp heroes he loosely takes after, even if he’s ultimately a superhero, even touted as the star of “Brazil’s First Superhero Film”.

And I hate everything about that so goddamn much.
