Scientists Call for Warnings, Ad Bans on Ultra Processed Foods
Minimal Process: shelled nuts, washed vegetables, fresh items used to make home cooked meals
Processed: tinned fish, frozen vegetables, cheese
Ultra Processed: many breakfast cereals, packaged snacks, sugary beverages, chips, frozen meals
Researchers say ultra-processed foods that are high in fats, starches, sugars and additives now make up 73% of the U.S. food supply, even though they are linked to health issues like diabetes, obesity, cancer and depression. Scientists say these foods should be regulated with tobacco-style warnings and advertising bans. Trish Cotter, global lead for the Food Policy Program at Vital Strategies, joined CBS News to discuss ultra-processed foods.
"Ultra Processed foods are things you can't make in your kitchen. They use edible ingredients that are pulled apart and put back together using industrial processing. They add to it a cocktail of additives, emulsifiers, colors, flavors and the end result is something that is hyper-palatable. There's a texture that's attractive. These products are ready to eat; ready to heat and unfortunately they are taking up too much of our diet."
[politely saying factory food is created to be addictive, full of chemicals and it leads to major health problems]
When she started naming chips, packaged food ready to heat, like lasagna....the announcer cuts in and ends the interview. BAH! Protect the advertising $$$.
#ultra processed foods#I bought heat and eat foods two days ago#needed this message#self care#it tastes so bad#stuff inside the box looks way different from the ad pictures#a weak moment#Youtube

By Chris Van Tulleken For The Daily Mail.
We're all eating too many calories and too much sugar, salt and saturated fat – but you don't need me to tell you that.
However, the thing that has eluded scientists until recently is why.
After all, sugar, salt and fat have been cheap and available for a long time – but it's only in the past few decades that obesity has soared. What happened?
'Bliss-point', 'sonic branding', 'vanishing caloric density', 'snackification', 'stomach share' and 'hyperpalatability' is what happened – these are just some of the terms that explain why food-related disease is fast overtaking tobacco as the leading cause of early death in this country and globally.
These terms refer to just some of the covert tactics being used by the food manufacturers with one aim in mind: to make us buy and eat more, and then still more.
These approaches are highly scientific, developed by the best minds, using MRI brain scanners and other techniques, in order to learn exactly how to hijack our unconscious desires.
This knowledge then informs the new products developed by food scientists – moreish, packaged foods.
These are made using industrial processes that you could not replicate in your own kitchen, with ingredients that you would not find in your home larder, what are now known as ultra-processed foods, or UPFs.

The high price of tobacco in Gaza has given rise to a cigarette smuggling industry that now threatens United Nations aid convoys, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.
Cigarettes can cost as much as $25 each in the war-torn region, and gangs have found ways to smuggle them in as contraband alongside aid deliveries. One group of Palestinian men demanded entry to a U.N. warehouse last week to secure a stash of cigarettes they knew was inside, according to the Journal.
The smuggling operation only enhances the dangers for aid convoys operating in Gaza, which have already faced mobs of Palestinians stopping them in their tracks.
Demand for cigarettes skyrocketed in early May when Israeli forces seized control of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt. They closed the border to virtually all trade, cutting off a previously steady flow of tobacco products into Gaza.
Opportunists then began smuggling the product into the region via the aid packages coming in to United Nations facilities from all over the world.
The danger has contributed to aid groups' refusal to make deliveries beyond the Gaza border. Over 1,000 truckloads worth of aid are still sitting just within Gazan territory at the Kerem Shalom crossing with Israel, according to the Journal.
"This is threatening to undermine everything we’re trying to do," a U.N. official told the outlet.
President Biden's administration sought to facilitate aid delivery by constructing a temporary pier on the Gaza coast last month. The effort soon met disaster, however, as weather rendered it unusable in a matter of days.
The U.N. also announced on June 10 that it would halt food distribution at the pier due to security concerns. The U.S. spent roughly $320 million on building the structure.
Rocket attacks struck two warehouses holding aid delivered to the pier in early June, contributing to the pause in delivery. The Biden administration has said it is committed to the maintenance of the pier moving forward.

All Things Yara:
Santo Gusto Coffee Company
When you think of Yara, you might immediately think: tobacco, Viviro™, guns, and crocodiles, but did you know that Yara grows, produces, packages, and distributes its very own coffee.
Founded in 1882, Santo Gusto Café has been enjoyed by Yaran from all walks of life from the peasant toiling the fields to our very own El Presidente, Antón Castillo.
Growing Coffee
If you want the best coffee, you start with the best soil. Our coffee is grown in the lush foothills of Robustas Hills in El Este region.
One of many coffee plantations in Robustas Hills, Sierra Perdida, El Este.
Individual farms grow the coffee under strict regulation by the Yaran government. They use only organic and 100% natural fertilizer.

Harvesting and Processing the Beans
Small individual farms around the Sierra Perdida province grow, harvest, and locally process the raw beans. They are hand picked, cleaned, and dried in the Yaran sun. Afterwards, the coffee beans are sent to Santo Gusto Coffee Factory for further processing and packaging for distribution.

Santo Gusto Coffee Factory
Every stage of coffee production is highly regulated by the government of Yara to ensure top quality of the final product, and for this, there is constant FND (Fuerzas Nacionales de Defensa) presence on location at the processing facility. Moreover, cameras, security systems and armed guards make approaching the facility problematic, let alone visiting it.

However we were able to grant ourselves temporary access to the factory grounds - by means which will not be disclosed here - and got to play factory workers for a day for the sake of this article.

Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!
Coffee is an important industry for Yara’s economy and makes up for ehhh 37% of all jobs. It is responsible for creating employment for countless Yarans, from farmers, factory workers, to delivery truck drivers, and coffee shop owners.

Sponsoring Street Racing?
Santo Gusto Café is itself overseen and partly funded by Yara’s government, but the company remains independent enough to sponsor community events. It is the main sponsor for a highly popular annual street race.
The race sets out from the small community of Santo Domingo.
Santo Domingo, Sierra Perdida, El Este.
The course twists and turns through the muddy trails of Robustas Hills and anyone with a pickup with decent enough suspension can take part.
A racer taking part in Santo Gusto sponsored street race.
Contestants don’t race against one another simultaneously, but rather against the clock for muddy glory. This is to keep the event relatively safe since the course does run through a main road as well.

If you enjoyed this article and would like to learn more about activities, places, events, and all things Yara, come back and visit this page often and follow us on Tumblr!
Stay tuned for an exclusive guided tour INSIDE the factory!
Editor's Notes:
Coffee growers being so strictly regulated by the Yaran government, some take it upon themselves to grow a little extra and sell it on the side. You gotta make a living wage somehow.
Also, don't be fooled: orgánico, shmorgánico. The wind doesn’t care about your feelings and PG-240 compound IS in your coffee. Lo siento.

"Just like they did with smoking... 'Big Tobacco' has taken another addictive product, wrapped it in shiny packaging and added sweet flavours to create a new generation of nicotine addicts. We have been duped", he said. Medical experts agree. Prof Banks argued the promotion of e-cigarettes as a "healthier" alternative was a classic "sleight-of-hand" from the tobacco industry. As such, vaping had become "normalised" in Australia, and in the UK too. "There's over 17,000 flavours, and the majority of use is not for smoking cessation", she said. "They're being heavily marketed towards children and adolescents. People who are smoking and using e-cigarettes - that's the most common pattern of use, dual use."

The Role of Cigarette Packaging in Consumer Choices Cigarette packaging plays a crucial role in shaping consumer choices, serving not only as a protective cover but also as a key marketing tool. For smokers, the design, branding, and presentation of products like ciggy cigarettes significantly influence purchasing decisions. The visual appeal of a pack can evoke a sense of quality, luxury, or familiarity, making it an essential factor for smokers when selecting their preferred brand.
Packaging is the first thing a consumer interacts with, and it provides a visual cue that reinforces brand identity. Colors, logos, and imagery are carefully selected to communicate specific messages. For example, sleek, minimalistic designs often imply sophistication, while bold, vibrant packaging may suggest a more energetic or youthful brand. This visual language is essential in the crowded tobacco market, where companies strive to differentiate themselves and attract consumers in a highly competitive environment.
Beyond aesthetics, cigarette packaging also reflects consumer preferences for safety and convenience. Packs that are easy to open, reseal, and protect the contents from moisture or damage can significantly influence a buyer’s decision. Packaging innovations, such as slim packs, have become popular for those seeking portability and a modern look. Additionally, warnings about health risks are legally required in many countries, influencing how brands present their products to align with regulatory guidelines while still maintaining a visually appealing design.
The material of the packaging also plays an important role in shaping perceptions. Cardboard packs, often associated with traditional cigarettes, are still widely used, but companies are also experimenting with metal, plastic, or other materials that may offer a more premium or durable experience. These design elements contribute to the overall sensory experience that consumers expect from a product, which in turn can influence their brand loyalty.
Cigarette packaging also serves as a symbol of lifestyle, aligning with social and cultural values. For many smokers, the design of their cigarette pack is not just a matter of functionality; it’s an expression of identity. Whether a consumer chooses a pack with bold graphics or one with a more refined, minimalist design, the packaging reflects their preferences and lifestyle choices. The tobacco industry recognizes this connection and uses it to craft products that appeal to specific demographics.
Furthermore, the influence of packaging extends beyond the initial purchase. Packaging that communicates quality, status, and trustworthiness can lead to repeat business, encouraging consumers to stick with a particular brand. It also plays a role in fostering brand loyalty, with individuals often choosing the same brand for years due to positive associations with the packaging.
In conclusion, cigarette packaging is more than just a protective shell for the product. It is a powerful marketing tool that influences consumer decisions, creates brand identity, and communicates lifestyle values. The careful design and innovation behind cigarette packaging continue to shape the tobacco industry, ensuring it remains relevant and appealing to consumers worldwide.

How Alcohol Testing Labs in Ajman Ensure Compliance with International Beverage Standards? | +971 554747210
The global alcoholic beverage industry is under constant scrutiny to ensure that products meet strict regulatory standards, especially when it comes to safety, quality, and environmental impact. Whether it’s a local brewery in Ajman or an international brand exporting to various markets, ensuring compliance with international beverage standards is crucial to avoid legal issues, maintain consumer trust, and succeed in the highly competitive alcohol industry. This is where alcohol testing labs in Ajman come into play.
In this blog, we will explore how alcohol testing lab in Ajman ensure that alcoholic beverages meet international standards. From compliance with safety regulations to ensuring consistency and quality, these labs help manufacturers navigate the complex landscape of beverage standards, making their products safer for consumers and more competitive in the global market.
The Importance of Compliance with International Beverage Standards
International standards for alcoholic beverages are designed to ensure consumer safety and product quality. These regulations cover a wide range of factors, from ingredients and production methods to packaging, labeling, and environmental impact. Compliance with these standards is not only necessary for legal operations but also serves to build consumer confidence in the products.
Key international beverage standards include:
The Codex Alimentarius: Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), this set of guidelines covers food safety and quality, including alcoholic beverages.
ISO Standards: ISO 22000, ISO 9001, and other ISO certifications are crucial for companies that wish to ensure product quality and safety. These standards are recognized worldwide and are important for businesses that export their products.
The European Union (EU) Regulations: The EU has strict standards for the production, labeling, and safety of alcoholic beverages, including specific rules regarding ingredients and additives.
U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) Guidelines: For companies exporting to the United States, compliance with the TTB's requirements on labeling, alcohol content, and health warnings is critical.
Failure to comply with these regulations can result in product recalls, fines, or the inability to sell in international markets. For this reason, alcohol testing labs in Ajman play a critical role in ensuring that alcoholic beverages meet these global standards.
How Alcohol Testing Labs in Ajman Ensure Compliance with International Beverage Standards
1. Chemical and Microbiological Testing
One of the key functions of alcohol testing labs in Ajman is to ensure that alcoholic beverages are free from harmful contaminants and that they meet chemical and microbiological standards set by international regulators. These labs conduct a series of tests to detect harmful microorganisms, chemical additives, and impurities that could compromise product quality and safety.
Chemical Testing includes:
Alcohol Content: International regulations, such as those from the EU or U.S. TTB, require that alcohol content is precisely measured. Alcohol testing labs use advanced techniques like gas chromatography to ensure that the alcohol content of beverages is within the specified range.
Additives and Preservatives: Many countries have strict limits on the use of additives and preservatives in alcoholic beverages. Testing labs check for substances like sulfites or artificial sweeteners to ensure they meet international safety standards.
Microbiological Testing includes:
Pathogen Detection: International standards require alcoholic beverages to be free from harmful microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, or molds that can cause spoilage or illness. Labs test for pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria to ensure compliance.
Fermentation Monitoring: Testing labs also monitor the fermentation process to ensure that no unintended microorganisms are present, which could lead to contamination and non-compliance with safety regulations.
By conducting these tests, alcohol testing labs in Ajman help producers ensure that their products meet international health and safety standards, making them compliant for both local and global markets.
2. Labeling and Ingredient Compliance
International beverage standards also require alcoholic beverages to have proper labeling that adheres to specific regulations. For example, beverages must include information on alcohol content, ingredients, allergen warnings, and health-related messages. Alcohol testing labs in Ajman play a crucial role in verifying that labels meet the requirements of international regulatory bodies such as the EU, WHO, and the U.S. TTB.
Labeling tests typically cover:
Alcohol Content: International guidelines mandate that alcohol content is clearly stated on labels. Alcohol testing labs measure the exact alcohol content and confirm it is accurately reflected on the product label.
Ingredient Transparency: The Codex Alimentarius and other international standards require that all ingredients in alcoholic beverages, including flavorings, colors, and preservatives, are clearly listed on the label. Testing labs verify that the ingredients comply with international regulations, ensuring transparency for consumers.
Health and Safety Warnings: Many countries require specific health warnings on alcoholic beverages, such as pregnancy-related warnings or warnings about the consumption of alcohol while driving. Alcohol testing labs ensure these messages are included and comply with international standards.
By ensuring that all labeling and ingredient claims are accurate and comply with international regulations, alcohol testing labs in Ajman help producers avoid legal complications and ensure market access across different countries.
3. Packaging Material Safety
The packaging of alcoholic beverages is another area where international standards come into play. Alcoholic beverages must be packaged in materials that are safe for both the product and the consumer. For instance, the EU and U.S. regulations require that packaging materials for alcoholic beverages do not leach harmful chemicals into the contents of the drink.
Alcohol testing labs in Ajman conduct packaging material testing, which includes:
Chemical Migration Testing: This test ensures that packaging materials, such as glass, plastic, or metal, do not release harmful chemicals that could compromise the beverage's safety or quality. These tests help comply with international standards like the EU’s Framework Regulation for Food Contact Materials.
Seal Integrity and Leak Testing: Ensuring that bottles and cans are properly sealed is critical for maintaining the quality and safety of the product. Testing labs check for leaks and ensure that the packaging protects the beverage from contamination and spoilage.
These tests are essential for compliance with international packaging standards and help alcohol producers avoid potential contamination risks during shipping and storage.
4. Environmental and Sustainability Compliance
Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important aspect of international regulations and consumer expectations in the alcoholic beverage industry. Many countries have adopted environmental standards that require producers to minimize waste, use eco-friendly packaging, and ensure responsible production processes.
Alcohol testing labs in Ajman help producers meet these sustainability goals by:
Assessing Carbon Footprint: Some international regulations require that producers measure and report their carbon emissions. Testing labs help monitor the environmental impact of the production process.
Recyclability and Waste Management: Testing labs help ensure that packaging materials are recyclable and that waste disposal methods meet global environmental standards.
By supporting sustainability efforts, alcohol testing labs in Ajman help producers comply with international environmental regulations, which can be a key selling point in global markets where eco-conscious consumers are prevalent.
5. Export Compliance and Certification
Many alcoholic beverage producers in Ajman aim to expand their reach to international markets. To do so, they must ensure that their products comply with export requirements, including international beverage standards and certification procedures.
Alcohol testing labs assist with export certification by:
Providing Certificates of Analysis (COAs): These certificates verify that products meet the necessary quality and safety standards, which are required for exports to markets such as the EU, U.S., or Asia.
Supporting Trade Regulations: Alcohol testing labs ensure that the products meet all required import and export standards, which can include quality assurance checks, documentation for customs clearance, and adherence to specific country regulations.
These services help alcohol producers navigate the complexities of international trade and ensure their products are eligible for export, increasing their global competitiveness.
Conclusion
Alcohol testing labs in Ajman play a vital role in ensuring compliance with international beverage standards. From chemical and microbiological testing to labeling, packaging, and sustainability compliance, these labs provide comprehensive testing services that help producers meet the stringent requirements of international markets. By ensuring product safety, quality, and environmental compliance, alcohol testing labs not only protect consumer health but also support the growth and competitiveness of the alcohol industry in Ajman.
For alcohol producers looking to expand their global reach, partnering with a reliable alcohol testing lab in Ajman is essential to ensure that products meet the highest international standards, maintain consumer trust, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global market.
