listening: background noise for the week has been relistening to TANIS. not gonna lie, y'all, this podcast has not aged well! it is simply not very good! it was always kinda mid with regard to dialogue etc but now after listening to other narrative podcasts (TMA, Silt Verses, Wolf359, etc) it's even worse. all it ever really had going for it was Vibes and it's hanging on that by a thread. however, it is serving the purpose of essentially white noise. audio drama equivalent of eating packing peanuts.

I also got surprised in one of the early episodes because Elisa Lam's name wasn't censored - I could have SWORN that at the time there was a pretty large backlash to using a real person's tragedy and name in a narrative fiction podcast so they went and censored her name out? like, that's why all the following episodes have that disclaimer about "for legal and safety reasons we've elected to change some names and leave others out entirely"? okay yes live mid-writing of this I went and checked and the transcript of that episode literally says "Also, we have decided to entirely redact the name of one person who has passed away whose name was used in this episode. It appears in this transcript as [REDACTED]." did I somehow get an unedited version in my podcast app??? very odd.

when I got bored of TANIS or needed something more engaging/stimulating I got back on The Silt Verses season 2! on s2e3 now for reference. especially in contrast with TANIS it is so phenomenal lol.

you will notice that last week I linked "Pale Green Things" from the album The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats. this made me realize that a song I listen to a lot around this time of year ("This Year", obviously, lol) is on the same album. I have embarrassing news which is that I have listened to exactly one Mountain Goats album all the way through (Jenny from Thebes) so I resolved to listen to The Sunset Tree all the way through.

gang, this is not a surprise, or news, but man, this album fucking whips. it's so good. why didn't I do this years ago. oh my god.

watching: the death of personal style by Mina Le - I've definitely never been as extravagant as she is known to be but I do love a little Outfit(tm), especially since I have officially acquired my Good Leather Jacket this fall. cooking this one in my brain still though because it takes me SO long to get ready for the day and having a 'uniform' would probably. help that. lol.

The Winter Reset Guide by Morgan Evelyn Cook - she's kinda basic (in a positive way) but I've been enjoying her vids along with Caroline Winkler as background noise. ngl I love her high five thing it's very cute. I did stop everything to hold my hand up like I was high-fiving her. her dog is adorable too.

The Online Gambling Epidemic by Drew Gooden - I'm becoming more of a hockey person (especially with the women's league coming up let's goooo) and while I'm not that tapped into it I'm sure gambling there exists, though it doesn't seem as plastered across everything as it is with football?

relatedly: watched a hockey game in the background on Saturday while I ran dnd! my mom and brother were there in person so I tuned in remotely to keep up :) also watched the Sirens/Frost game on Sunday yippee

playing: as above: ran dnd on Saturday! once again I spent time before it agonizing how I did not want to even a little bit but after actually doing it I had a lot of fun.

making: like a fool, I left the container with my winter wear open and my cat RIPPED THE POMPOM OFF the top of a hat I made a few years ago. it's no great loss - the pompom really wasn't big enough, I didn't have enough of the beige yarn I'd really wanted to use - and she didn't eat any of the yarn, just relished in tearing it all apart, so I made a new one with some leftover of the white. this one is bigger and fluffier and definitely matches the vibe of the hat better so I'm not mad. it's been deadly cold here, like windchills bringing it to single digits, so I've actually gotten some good wear out of it the past few days.

made what will hopefully be a lemon coaster but I think I gave it one too many rows of the interior yellow so stay tuned, plus a mousie for my cat :)

eating: yayy thanksgiving. many leftovers, etc. made a big ass kugel that was demolished over two different get-togethers, gonna make another one for a potluck at temple this coming Friday! might make that one with crushed pineapple because every time I mention it my grandma sighs wistfully and says how her mom used to make it that way.

I also made this sunchoke soup from some sunchokes that I blanched and froze about a month ago. I halved the recipe because I only had about a pound of sunchokes and this is soooo good. no picture because I'm ngl it looks like sludge lol. made waffles again too.

finally: little emotional support cheese board from the other day, lol.

feat. paesanella ciresa (soft vaguely mushroomy?), somerdale red dragon (very dijon mustard-y), cotswold (super chives and onion flavor), and appenzeller white label (swiss adjacent) picked up as little samples from the cheese counter castoff bin. and olives and mozz balls of course.

misc: really enjoyed these few days off. it is cold as fuck here which is not encouraging me to get back in the swing of things but it has put me in cozy mode. I did reformat my resume in LaTeX so now it's sexy for my conference next week because I am … printing out a few copies I guess ?? to bring to hand to people if needed. do people still do that. who fucking knows.

Altough I don’t think there’s anything besides coincidences, Jonny has famously been bad at naming characters lol. I just like going through all the information we have to find anything.

Okay but Jonathon can also be translated as the gift of Jehovah from Hebrew and since Sims is several steps derived from Simon in Hebrew as well, you could almost read it as Jonathon Sims > he who hears the gift of Jehovah.

On another note, if we want to fanon Jon's dad's name in the way Johnny does (by stealing IRL names) we could base Jon's father on Don Sims, the father of a Jonathon Sims who was born in Belfast in '84 and died slowly, in a coma after after trying an experimental treatment for vCJD. The reason I suggest folding Don into fanon is because Don is translated to world ruler/world wielder and Jon, son of Don Sims could mean the gift of Jehovah, son of he who hears the world ruler. Jonathan's mom was named Karen which could mean pure, ray of light, or antler but I like ray of light or pure for this thought process because her death could signify Jon's loss of innocence/purity or that he lost his guiding light which opens the door for Mr. Spider and therefore Elias and The Watcher.

Coincidentally, following Johnny's formula of building on real world fears, Belfast Jonathon contracted vCJD as a teen, meaning if we folded Jonathan's timeline into Jon, Annabelle's meddling into Don's death could have been the catalyst for why Jon wasn't in Belfast in high school to get vCJD because she'd manipulated him into living with Grandma in Bournemouth.

Alternatively, we could pull a different level of Johnny and just name Jon's parents after Johnny's, meaning tma!Paul, who died when Jon was 2, really lived up to his name meaning - small/humble - as a small part of Jon's life whereas tma!Sue really lives up to her lily/rose/flower name meaning, innocence and rebirth, signalled the end of Jon's innocence and set him on the road to his "rebirth" as The Watcher's favorite little boy, the Anti-Christ.

Sorry to hijack this 3am brain is spiraling coincidentally the Belfast Jonathon Sims could have gotten vCJD from eating...you guessed it: Johnny's favorite body horror dead to write, meat.

Oh I almost forgot - tying Jonathon's unfortunate demise into fanon would also be honoring the most horrific part of TMA, whether you get eaten by a fear isn't based on morality or social standing or worth. It's based on random bad luck. And Jonathon in Belfast could have had the bad luck to eat a bad burger and die over a decade, feeding the Flesh and the End that whole time, or, in Jon's case could have had the random luck to be pulled by Annabelle's web across the UK into the path to Jonas

The name Jonathan means 'God has given' while the surname Sims means 'He who hears' and I could write an essay on the importance of the name and how it connects to the plot of tma but I CANT because all Jonny did was PLAGIARIZE his FUCKING BIRTH CERTIFICATE

It’s “I went searching for a small tma detail and now have a weird theory” time. This one is about our dear friend; Allan Schrieber. That’s right the newly revealed maybe-boyfriend-definitely-best-friend of our dear, dear OG Elias Bouchard.

I was typing his name, and went “oh that’s odd, this a very German name” so I went to look it up. According to ancestry.com it means “occupational name for a clerk, from an agent derivative of Middle High German schriben ‘to write’ (via Old High German from Latin scribere). Jewish (Ashkenazic): from German Schreiber, Yiddish shrayber ‘writer’, adopted as a translation of Hebrew Soffer ‘scribe’.”

Yeah you read that wrote, the college student killed by one of Albrecht Von Closen’s empty books and haunted by an eye-less creature and has a German last name meaning “scribe/writer. (See this post and this one and this one about the book not being a Leitner)

Coincidence? I think not. 

So here’s my theory: Allan Schrieber is a Von Closen descended. Just like Mary and Gerry.

Do I have any proof? Only his last name and what killed him. Which are both pretty compelling and I think it’s enough for a fun theory.

Maybe not a direct descended like the Keays, but some kind of relation? Perhaps Albrecht’s nephew Wilhelm or one of the of the branches that stayed in Germany.

The other bit is we have no idea how Allan got the book. It’s not from the college library, or any other library. While it’s a possibility he got it from a book store- what book shop owner puts empty books on they’re shelf? Rather odd idea. And if anyone else who read the book had the same reaction- how did it end up in Allan’s possession?

Family heirloom. 

A mysterious family heirloom. Grandma dies and Allan going through her stuff? That’s a solid and reasonable origin of a weird, empty book.

That’s a decent amount of evidence.

This is all to say that Jonah Magnus hired the traumatized best friend (possibly boyfriend) of a descend of Albrecht Von Closen.

Going to acknowledge that I'm not Jewish, so I'm not claiming the final say, but it feels like the Lukases are based on the broader concept of rich but cold families. 'Mordechai' and 'Judith' generally sound like old white names, so I wouldn't think they were chosen for specific associations, unless that appeared to be a trend for the majority of named Lukases. As for serving an unorthodox deity, that seems standard for notable TMA characters.

I see you anon and it's probably me reading into it but I've noticed that tma,,, doesn't have any Jewish main characters? I don't think? I may just be forgetting someone.

I do think bc I'm Jewish I may be too quick to call out what looks like antisemitic Jewish stereotypes that are completely unintentional.

But... unintentional or not, it comes off that way. And the names especially stand out to me because "Judith" means 'a Jewish woman' in Hebrew.

ok I just watched prince of egypt again with my roomie and was like "oh shit moses is the reason why I find jon's voice and fanon character design so attractive" so anyway here's this

jon was raised by his jewish grandma, and even though he didn't practice a lot of religious observances they still did the basic stuff like passover seders
