The Harry and Meghan interview: Beyond the turmoil
While sifting through everything Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, had to say to Oprah Winfrey Sunday night, many saw parallels to other troubled times for the Royal Family.
The interview raised concerns particularly around race and mental health, and many found in it reminders of what Harryâs mother, Diana, experienced, as she laid bare the lack of support she felt after her ill-fated marriage to Prince Charles.
But the Diana period, which came as the clock wound down on the 20th century, was hardly the first time of family turmoil.
And in those earlier experiences going back decades â and centuries â there could lie hints of the House of Windsorâs fate after this latest crisis.
âI donât think the history of this Royal Family, which has been written off so many times, tells you anything other than they know how to survive,â said John Fraser, author of The Secret of the Crown: Canada's Affair with Royalty, and founding president of the Institute for the Study of the Crown in Canada.
âGoing back, back, back, there has never been a reign that hasnât had some domestic problems.â
Perhaps unsurprisingly for an institution that emphasizes keeping calm and carrying on, there have been only the slimmest of hints this week of what will come next.
In a 61-word statement issued by Buckingham Palace Tuesday, the Queen said she and her family were saddened to learn of Harry and Meghanâs experiences, and that issues raised, particularly of race, would be addressed privately by the family.
In response to a question from a reporter while at an engagement at a school in east London on Thursday, Prince William said, âWe're very much not a racist family.â
BBC royal correspondent Sarah Campbell said William could have ignored the question.
âDespite the Queen's statement saying the race issue would be dealt with privately, the prince clearly felt he had to push back on what has become a very public and damaging allegation," Campbell wrote on the BBC website. âRemaining silent, he felt, was not the best option.â
In the interview with Winfrey, Meghan and Harry said there was a conversation â or conversations â with an unnamed family member in which concerns were raised about the colour of the skin of their first child before he was born.
It was perhaps the most damaging moment of the interview for the family, and one that is still surrounded in murkiness.
While Harry told Winfrey later that neither of his grandparents â Queen Elizabeth or Prince Philip â was part of that particular conversation, he refused to say during the interview who was.
âThe fact that [Harryâs] on the outs with his father leads everyone to believe it must have been Charles, or possibly William, and until thatâs dealt with, itâs this huge problem if theyâre going to be future sovereigns,â said Fraser.
He said he finds it âunbelievableâ that Charles, the man who walked Meghan halfway down the aisle at her wedding, would be worried about the colour of his grandsonâs skin.
âNothing in his life suggests that he is that callous or stupid,â Fraser said.
Still, itâs not clear who might have said it.
âItâs been left like a timebomb,â said Fraser. âHow can [Charles] be the head of the Commonwealth, which has so many Black nations, until this is resolved? Itâs a real dilemma.â
Fraser expects we will eventually learn who was involved in the conversation in question. âItâs just the nature of the way things go.â
But Fraser hopes it will be a given a context, and that it will be worked out within the family, âat some point down the road when theyâve got some distance from the immediate hurt that everyone must be feeling at the moment.â
Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, a lawyer and human rights activist in London, says the familyâs circumstances are not beyond repair.
âBut the point is Buckingham Palace better take this seriously, not come out with any stiff-upper-lip nonsense,â she told Adrienne Arsenault, senior correspondent and co-host of CBCâs The National, this week, before the statement from the palace.
âNobodyâs going to stand for it. Not for the racist comment, not for their lack of support for Meghanâs mental health, suicidal thoughts, not that fact that Prince Charles apparently failed to even speak to his sonâŚ.
âAll of those things should be answered and they should be answered humanely, like the Royal Family is in touch with what the public expects from it.â
Maybe there is at least one more signal of efforts within the family to work things out. While the relationship between William and Harry has been deeply strained, William said Thursday he will be speaking with his brother.
Who can be a prince or princess
Amid the many issues Meghan raised during the interview, one that seemed particularly troubling for her concerned conversations before Archieâs birth.
âThey were saying they didnât want him to be a prince or a princess â not knowing what the gender would be â which would be different from protocol, and that he wasnât going to receive security,â she said.
That got a lot of people wondering about just what provisions there are for determining who becomes a prince or princess.
Under provisions of a letter patent issued by King George V in 1917, Archie would not at this point in his life be eligible to be a prince.
But his cousin â Prince Williamâs eldest son, seven-year-old George, who is in direct line to the throne â is a prince. Georgeâs siblings can be a prince or princess, too, under provisions of a letter patent issued in 2012 by Queen Elizabeth, before George was born.
But thatâs where it ends for that generation of royal great-grandchildren of the monarch, as things stand now.
âNone of Harryâs children automatically get to be a prince except if thereâs some reason that the Queen would bestow it on them,â said Fraser.
Grandchildren of a monarch can be princes or princesses, however, and things could change for Archie when his grandfather, Charles, becomes the monarch.
Whether Meghanâs comments might refer to what might happen then isnât clear.
There is a broad understanding that Charles is looking toward a more streamlined monarchy, with fewer working members.
"I saw that Meghan mentioned that there were plans to narrow eligibility and I imagine that this is a reference to the Prince of Wales's stated view that the size of the Royal Family needs to be reduced," Bob Morris from the constitution unit at University College London told the BBC.
"However, he has not so far as I know given details of how it should be accomplished."
Fascinator readers write
Readers of the Royal Fascinator shared their views in droves after the Winfrey interview. Hereâs a sampling of emails and excerpts from longer messages that reflect the wide range of thoughts offered on Harry, Meghan and what they said on Sunday.
From Linda: âI was saddened by the interview. It could have been a great opportunity for the royals to move forward and acknowledge mental health issues, but The Firm refused to take that route. Shocked to hear how the men in grey suits direct so much of the agenda.â
From Susan: âUnsubstantiated accusations are very damaging. Itâs easy to allege things were said and then refuse to say who said them. Then itâs just a case of he said, she said. But the damage is done.â
From Charlie: âI feel for Harry and Meghan and I don't blame them one bit for the decision they made for leaving the U.K. and the Royal Family, in search for a more peaceful, sane and healthy lifestyle and mental health. I have never been a royal watcher or a fan of all the pomp that goes into it. I personally think Canada should abolish all that nonsense as it relates to a Governor General as the representative of the Queen in Canada (who is still our head of state). Canada should maintain close ties with the U.K., for sure, as partners, allies and friends, but this monarchy BS is a waste of taxpayer dollars.â
From Margaret: âI am still grappling with the intent of the interview and tell-all. And what is to be gained by the couple? Probably more paparazzi and Hollywood-like behavioursâŚ. The constant referral back to Diana gives one pause for thought as well. Yes, Harry was totally traumatized by his motherâs deathâŚ. That said, although there are some similarities in press and media reporting, Diana was very young and naive when she joined âThe Firm,â whereas Harry and Meagan were well into their 30s when they married and should have known full well what could happenâŚ. I do not mean to downplay or negate the comments on race/skin colour. Hopefully there will be some conversations around that at the palace level.â
From Tina: âI felt so much of this interview resonated with the Diana era. It left me with many questions, but mostly: How on earth can a parent stop taking calls from their child? How on earth can a parent not want to keep their family safe? How on earth can a parent allow the words of racism to be spoken amongst anyone, never mind their own? How on earth can a parent knowingly watch your child go through such pain and not reach out?... I applaud the two of them for coming out to the world and letting people be reminded, once again, of a dated monarchy who cares more about how they are perceived to the world than that of their own. One can only hope for Meghan and Harry to have a life of joy with their little family and always be safe .... and perhaps maybe Harry's wish that 'time heals all' comes true and his family come to their senses.â
From Paul: âUnless I misheard Meghan, she mentioned that she was not informed/prepared with the protocols of âThe Firm.â I find this difficult to believe. She is an intelligent, successful woman with a mind of her own.... I am not naive enough to not know there would be some racial problems.  But I do believe too much emphasis was placed on the racial issue. As for protection being dropped for Harry, why not? He is in a foreign country, by choiceâŚ. With all Harry and Meghan's money, they should be paying for their own protection. Remember, they optioned out of the U.K. Nevertheless, I wish them the best in their endeavours.â
From Anna: âI do not feel this interview will damage the Royal Family. There are differences of opinion in all families. I do not feel the whole Royal Family should be painted with the same brush. This interview will be so hard on the Queen. My heart goes out to her.â
Weâll continue to include comments from readers in future editions of the Royal Fascinator
Royal reads
1. Harry and Meghanâs interview might have some thinking itâs time for Canada to retire the Queen and its connection to the monarchy, but it wouldnât be that simple to do, writes CBCâs Aaron Wherry.
2. Harry talked of an âinvisible contractâ between the media and the Royal Family. The BBC took a closer look at what it is.
3. Journalist and TV presenter Piers Morgan left British broadcaster ITV after long-running criticism of Meghan that reached a crescendo after the interview with Winfrey. [CBC

Dominic Miller. Absinthe, 2019. ECM 2614. ( Manu KatchÊ )   ~ [ Album Review |   1) ECM Reviews  +  2) All About Jazz  +  3) London Jazz News ]
1) The title of Absinthe, Dominic Millerâs follow-up to his 2017 ECM debut, Silent Light, harks to the early French Impressionists, whose all-in dedication to art is a philosophical touchpoint for the guitarist. To carry on that spirit, he could hardly have asked for a more eclectic yet integrated band. Bandoneon player Santiago Arias brings a sense of cross-continental shift that makes the world just a little smaller; keyboardist Mike Lindup adds a sometimes-surreal vibe thatâs equal parts cry from the past and message from the future; bassist Nicolas Fiszman is the soil to Millerâs sunlight; and drummer Manu KatchĂŠ, a remarkable impressionist in his own right, is time incarnate.
With such a massive scale to be reckoned with in theory, one might expect the results to be overpowering, when in practice the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic content is so evenly distributed between pans that by the end of each tune weâre left on an even keel from where we began. This is nowhere so true as on the opening title track, which spins a steady downtempo groove from the filaments of Millerâs solo introduction. The way his bandmates shuttle through the greater loom of the albumâs concept is as intuitive as the compositions yearning for consummation. A certain feeling of inward travel continues in all that follows.
The quiet locomotion of âMixed Blessingâ and is as progressive as the tender âChristianaâ is regressive, the geometrically inflected âĂtudeâ as inviting as the open-ended charm of âOmbu,â the melancholy âTĂŠnèbresâ as dark as the transparent âSaint Vincentâ is bright. The latter bears dedication to the late Cameroonian guitarist Vincent Nguini, a longtime collaborator with Paul Simon and something of a mentor for Miller. Even without such biographical details, these stories write themselves, unhidden, in real time. Binding their pages are shorter pieces, including the piano-rich âVerveineâ and the haunting âLa Petite Reine.â Into these we are afforded only fleeting glimpses, personal tesseracts whose potential for transfiguration can only be expressed in song.Â
All of which makes âBicyleâ quintessential in the present milieu. Its pedaling motion is more than a metaphor; itâs an actualization of lifeâs unstoppable flow. For there, woven between each spoke like a playing card, memories fade into new experiences, squinting into the glare of a setting sun as the world curls into slumber.
2) Guitarist Dominic Miller's 2017 ECM debut Silent Light was a low key affair that focused on his solo classical guitar (plus a bit of light percussion). The sequel features a full quintet with a rhythm section. A bigger sound, but with a similar impressionistic flavor. Miller's liner notes make that visual art reference explicit: as a resident of the south of France he has become fascinated with the French Impressionist painters, admiring their artistic daring.
The album opens with the title tune: Miller's acoustic guitar and drummer Manu Katche's swirling cymbals set the scene for the entry of Santiago Arias' bandoneon, the primary melodic instrument in the music. It is a significant new timbral color in the ensemble, as well as a nod to the avowed Argentinian influence in Miller's music. "Mixed Blessing" includes a synthesizer solo from keyboardist Mike Lindup, a contrasting sound that is favored throughout the set; although on "Ătude" his piano playing is a foundational element.
The spare, low rumbling drums and guitar of "La Petite Reine" recall the sound of Silent Light. "Ătude" and "Ombu" step up the tempo a bit, and the latter gives the drums a highlighted role as active rhythmic accompaniment for the whole band: no doubt very satisfying for KatchĂŠ fans who have been waiting to hear him cut loose. Closer "Saint Vincent" is an upbeat tune that features the whole band, with solos from Miller and Lindup (on piano).
Miller has an expanded musical concept to go with the larger band. The tunes are still compact statements, but make use of the instrumental forces for greater timbral contrast. And he is a generous band leader as well: while his guitar is at the center of the arrangements, all of the players are given a chance to shine. It will be interesting to see where he goes next.
3) Absinthe is Argentinian-born guitarist Dominic Millerâs second release for ECM and his fourteenth solo album. The list of recordings with other people, however, is immense. Even if his name is unfamiliar you have probably already heard him. He has played with Sting since The Soul Cages in 1991 and masses of other musicians along the way, from The Chieftains to Youssou NâDour, via Tina Turner, Lesley Garrett, Sarah Jane Morris and Manu Dibango. Some of the musicians with whom he has recorded make up the new quintet for this album.
Absinthe is an airy, atmospheric set of compositions inspired by Millerâs love of the works of the Impressionist artists, many of whom painted in the South of France where he now lives. The title came to him first, apparently â many of the impressionists drank absinthe, that potent anise-based spirit favoured by bohemians known as âla fĂŠe verteâ. In a recent interview with German news site DW.com, Miller expands on the title:
âFor me itâs about being out of it. And over the last few years Iâve really been into French paintings and thinking about this history of the early 19th century and how Lautrec and Van Gogh and a lot of these guys were tripping on absinthe but still coming up with amazing work. And because they were such highly skilled artists they could come up with these really outrageous trippy concepts with colour.â
Miller put together a quintet sympathetic to his ideas and wrote the music with the âsonic palettesâ of his chosen musicians in mind. First up is young Argentinian Santiago Arias who studied under Dino Saluzzi at the Conservatoire in Buenos Aires. He plays the bandoneon, that concertina-like instrument associated with Argentinian tango. His sound is pure and extremely melodic. The combination of Millerâs lyrical guitar with Ariasâ lovely lines is delightful â they are the perfect foil for each other. The other three musicians have all played with Miller for years.
On keyboards is Englishman Mike Lindup, best known for his work with Level 42, but a regular performer with Miller, who played with Level 42 himself back in the 80s. Lindupâs is a third melodic voice with the guitar and bandoneon â he also adds delicate ethereal tones, almost theremin-like in places.
On bass is Belgian Nicolas Fiszman. He studied guitar with Philip Catherine, then changed to bass. Heâs played with Miller since 2005, but has accompanied Johnny Halliday, Angelique Kidjo, and Charles Aznavour in his time. Miller describes his playing and intonation as having âthe nobility of a great whaleâ, which is a lovely description and also, I think, fair enough. His subtle and discreet bass underpins the whole endeavour.
Miller describes French percussionist Manu KatchĂŠ as âan artist on the drums, especially with his cymbal work where he is like a great painterâ. His presence is everywhere on this recording, and his contribution adds colour, as well as texture to the pieces. KatchĂŠ is well-known as a session musician â having played with almost everybody. Heâs also an ECM veteran. Miller has recorded with KatchĂŠ as part of his band, and heâs another long-serving member of Stingâs band, so they know each other musically very well.
Itâs an unconventional combo, but it works well â the range of timbres and harmonies is extremely agreeable. Thereâs an Argentinian tinge to much of the music, though think Gotan Project, rather than Astor Piazzolla, as there is a groove through many of the tunes, not just from KatchĂŠâs inventive percussion but the rhythmic qualities of the ensemble playing. On an initial hearing the CD appeared light and easy, bar some disjunct improv in the track Ombu, but this is misleading. I think that the limpid clarity of the production (by Manfred Eicher himself), the pleasant atmosphere, the sweetness of tone and the downright prettiness of the guitar and bandoneon sound just gives that impression. As is often the case with music which can be perceived as light or suave, like bossa nova, for example, on a closer listen, the complexity of the composition and the beauty of the ensemble playing comes through.
From the first track Absinthe, where the bandoneon, after a precise harmonious intro, starts sliding about into little patches of dissonance, and the spectral notes from the synthesiser twist around against a backdrop of precise strings and strangely colourful cymbal sounds, the listener is entranced. By the final track, Saint Vincent (presumably a reference to Van Gogh rather than the countless catholic saints, or indeed the American singer/songwriter of the same name) the sonic palette has been fully explored. Millerâs guitar playing is wonderful throughout, lyrical, deft and harmonious. Saint Vincent builds in layers of colour and light to a Pat Metheny-esque crescendo and then disappears as if blown away by the mistral.
This record will appeal to Miller fans, to Sting fans, to existing fans of any of the other members of the band, and to new listeners who are already aficionados of ECMâs fine output of chamber music. As usual, I now want to hear this live, and indeed a grand promotional tour for Absinthe of Central and South America, and Northern Europe was planned. Sadly it has had to be cancelled for health reasons. Wishing Dominic Miller a speedy recovery.

Hi .. going through tough times right now and I'm so anxious that I couldn't do think anything else right now. It is fine if you can't reply me, can you suggest me few books that can help me cope up? Books that makes me feel better. Thank you ..
Hi there, Iâm so sorry youâre not feeling well, and I truly hope youâll feel better soon. Just hang in there, okay?â¤
So, unfortunately I donât know a lot about self-help books, if that was what you were asking for, but I can rec you a few things that have helped me or made me laugh or made me happy.
If youâre into that, there are many multi-book fantasy series thatâll suck you in and keep you busy for a few weeks (or months). Try The Belgariad, A Song of Ice and Fire, His Dark Materials, The Painted Man, The First Law, the Bartimaeus Sequence, Philip Pullmanâs Sally Lockartâs books and the Discworld Series.Â
(Depending on your age, the bolded titles could be a bit dark, so use your common sense, okay? If youâre not comfortable with something, stop reading.)
Something else I couldnât stop put down till the very end over the past few years: JK Rowlingâs adult books (The Casual Vacancy and the Cormoran Strike stories), Karen Joy Fowlerâs The Jane Austen Book Club, Muriel Barberyâs The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Susanna Clarkeâs Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and Liane Moriartyâs novels - again, these are not necessarily cheerful books, but theyâre very well written and seem to physically push you out of your own life for a while, if thatâs what you need.
If youâre looking for something thatâs funny - well, itâs harder to help you out, because humour changes so much from person to person, but here are a few books that are guaranteed to make people laugh - just read a few pages before buying them so you can decide if theyâre suited to you or not:
Gerald Durrell, My Family and Other Animals (you probably know about this one - an account of the time the Durrell family spent in Corfu during WW2 - but itâs a personal favourite, so Iâm including it)
David Sedaris (just pick anything - he writes these short stories about his life, and somehow itâs always so damn funny)
Douglas Adams, A Hitchhikerâs Guide to the Galaxy (unfortunately, doesnât do much for me, but many of my friends are absolute devotees)
Helen Fielding, Bridget Jonesâ Diary (depending on how old you are, it may feel a bit off to you, but I really enjoyed it)
David Foster Wallace, A Supposedly Fun Thing Iâll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments (like Sedarisâ, this is a memoir written in short stories - I really liked it)
If youâd rather something that felt familiar, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling and others all wrote books that have been described as hilarious - hereâs a list by the Huffington Post.
Thereâs also a couple of non fiction books that may make you feel better or distract you - and all of these are very readable, I promise - definitely not those boring academic things that make you curse the invention of paper. Try Desmond Morrisâ The Naked Woman (an anthropological study on the female body), Jon Ronsonâs The Men Who Stare at Goats (about the CIAâs wacky experiments in the 1970s), Levitt and Dubnerâs Freakonomics (you can also listen to their podcast for free), Yuval Noah Harariâs Homo Deus (a brilliant analysis of who we are and who weâll be in the 21st century) and Steven Pinkerâs The Better Angels of Our Nature (a study on how, surprisingly, our world is actually getting better).
Last category: inspirational books of some kind or another.
Paulo Coelhoâs The AlchemistÂ
Shunryu Suzukiâs Zen Mind, Beginnerâs Mind
Richard Bachâs Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Herman Hesseâs Siddartha
Cheryl Strayedâs Wild
Martha Gellhorn, Travels with Myself and Another
Joan Didion, The Year of Magical Thinking
Robert Pirsigâs Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Something you should definitely add to the list are books you enjoyed as a child or a teen, and also - sorry to butt in with unrequested life tips, but for me, what seems to work are those things you always see everywhere - keep your room tidy, make your bed, make an effort with your appearance, take a walk outside (if possible near trees or rivers), exercise (dancing alone in your room totally counts), go to bed and wake up every day around the same time, and try your hand at yoga or meditation. Now, the trouble is, of course, that these are all things we really donât want to do when weâre blue, but they actually help? Iâd recommend Headspace, a meditation app - the first two weeks are free, and the guy has this soothing voice and this interesting way of guiding you through it and explain how your own mind works.Â
And finally, a piece of advice that first given to me years ago, when I was grieving a friendâs death: negative feelings are a normal part of the human experience, and instead of fighting back, let them come. Acknowledge that this is how you feel right now, and allow yourself to be sad, or angry, or anxious. Just remember this is not permanent, because nothing is. Itâs like waves, this person once said to me - they come all they way to the beach and then they roll back. Theyâre not who you are, they donât define you in any way, they just - are. So, really - take it one day at a time and remember the wave will roll back, okay? - because thatâs what waves do.

The Case For Kirsten Gillibrand
American voters who are nervous â or outright terrified â about what a Donald Trump presidency will bring to the United States throughout the next four years are eager to find someone who can defeat him in 2020 (assuming that Trump even runs for reelection).
Many names have been batted around as Democratic prospects.  Elizabeth Warren.  Cory Booker. Tulsi Gabbard.  Tim Kaine.  Sherrod Brown.  JuliĂĄn Castro.  Amy Klobuchar.  Martin OâMalley.  Kamala Harris.  John Hickenlooper.
I feel that any one of those aforementioned lawmakers would be far superior to President Trump...not that itâs a very high bar to surpass. Â But out of all of the possibilities, Iâm going to make an argument for why I believe that U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) would be the optimal choice to headline the top of the Democratsâ presidential ticket â strategically, viscerally, and legislatively.
The 50-year-old Gillibrand has served as New Yorkâs junior U.S. Senator since 2009, when she was appointed by then-Governor David Paterson to fill Hillary Clintonâs vacant seat after Clinton was selected by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Secretary of State. Â In 2010, she won a special election to serve out the remainder of Secretary Clintonâs original term, and then, in 2012, Gillibrand was elected to the seat in her own right.
Prior to her being vaulted into the national spotlight upon filling Clintonâs shoes, Gillibrand was previously elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 to represent New Yorkâs 20th Congressional District; she was reelected in 2008, a couple of months before her Senate appointment.  Born Kirsten Rutnik (affectionately nicknamed âTinaâ during her childhood and college years), she grew up in Albany to a semi-prominent political family. She went on to study Asian Studies at Dartmouth College, from which she graduated magna cum laude in 1988.
Before earning her Juris Doctor at UCLA School of Law, Gillibrand interned for liberal Republican U.S. Senator Alfonse DâAmato. Â But in the 1990s, she was personally hired by then-U.S. Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Andrew Cuomo to work as his Special Counsel. Â Her experiences within the offices of both DâAmato and Cuomo shows that sheâs able to balance concerns from moderate wings of both major political parties and their complementary special interests.Â
As the Clinton Administration came to an end, Gillibrand moved on to become a defense attorney at the law firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, where a major client of her firm was Philip Morris.  Despite her misgivings about having to take cases for the Tobacco Industry, she also negotiated the ability to do pro bono work on domestic abuse cases and housing issues.  Her ties to Philip Morris became an issue during both her 2006 and 2008 congressional campaigns, given how former colleagues from her firm had financially contributed to her. Yet, as a U.S. Representative, Gillibrand ended up supporting a great amount of anti-tobacco legislation.
Although the 2006 midterms swept in a national âwaveâ that worked in the Democratsâ favor, Gillibrand was never guaranteed a victory going into her congressional race. Unlike Hillary Clinton, who had the advantage of facing meek Republican opposition during both of her senatorial campaigns in 2000 and 2006, Gillibrand faced incumbent U.S. Congressman John E. Sweeney during her first congressional run in the 2006 cycle.  She chose to take Sweeney on, in large part, because of his bombastic reputation and his horrid voting record.Â
Indeed, then-Congressman Sweeney threw everything but the kitchen sink at Gillibrand, telling outright lies about her ideological positions while finding the least flattering images of her to use in his attack ads. Â But, by shoring up support amongst the Democratic base and energizing overlooked constituencies, she still defeated him by almost 15,000 votes (a little less than a 7% margin).
As a freshman member of the U.S. House, Gillibrand took positions that were pro-gun and anti-amnesty. Â This reflected her willingness to accurately represent her constituents, since New Yorkâs 20th Congressional District was a heavily-Republican area that â even to this day! â has bounced back-and-forth between liberal and conservative representation since the 1980s.
So, while she identified as a Blue Dog Democrat during her U.S. House tenure, Gillibrand has become more progressive upon having to represent the entire state of New York as their junior U.S. Senator. Â In every election in which sheâs run since 2008, Gillibrand has always netted at least 60% of the vote.
Upon arriving in Congress, then-Representative Gillibrand took on the issue of military rape inflicted upon women and men in the armed services; sheâs been at the forefront of challenging The Pentagonâs tendency to sweep these abuses under the rug. Â She has demanded transparency when it comes to earmarks, financial disclosures, and official meetings; she has led by example, becoming the very first congressperson to make her entire schedule available to constituents online. Â One of her priorities has been to crack down on insider trading through the STOCK Act â she helped to get it passed in 2012, and it bars members of the Legislative and Executive Branches from using their insider knowledge to personally profit while in office. Â That would include Donald Trump.
She has also worked on a bipartisan basis to introduce legislation that would require all congressional earmarks to be searchable via an electronic database. Â Gillibrand vehemently opposes Citizens United, believes that anyone funding a political advertisement should be legally required to appear in the ad itself, and wants to curb taxpayer money and foreign donations from being spent in unlimited amounts on U.S.-based political campaigns. Â She opposes automatic congressional pay raises and âanonymous holdsâ within the U.S. Senate.
Since being appointed by former Governor Patterson to fill Hillary Clintonâs U.S. Senate seat, Gillibrand has served on four Senate committees: Â Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry; Armed Services; Environment & Public Works; and Aging (the latter of which is a special committee).
Senator Gillibrand has been the ranking Democrat on the Livestock, Dairy, Poultry, Marketing & Agriculture Security subcommittee since 2015 (prior to the Democrats losing the U.S. Senate in 2014, Gillibrand was the subcommittee chair). Â When coupled with her strong opposition to budgetary cuts for food stamp relief, Kirsten Gillibrand would be in a very hands-on position, as President of the United States, to work at lightning-speed with confronting the issues of agricultural sustainability and food insecurity.
When she joined the U.S. Senate â just four years after her tutelage in the House of Representatives â Gillibrand immediately got to work. Â She took the lead on repealing Donât Ask, Donât Tell â convincing the wishy-washy Joe Lieberman to get on-board with it (something that Senate Democrats before her had failed to do), and then ultimately pulled in high-profile support from moderate Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins.
Once former Justice David Souter announced his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court just three months after President Obamaâs inauguration in 2009, Senator Gillibrand studied the options for potential replacements and personally recommended Second Circuit Court of Appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor to Obama. Â The newly-minted president eventually selected Sotomayor as his judicial appointment â making her the first Latina to join the highest court in the land.
She also picked up directly with the legislative work that U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney were unable to complete on behalf of 9/11 emergency workers whoâve suffered health problems as a direct result from frequenting Ground Zero in the aftermath of the terrorist attack. Â Senator Gillibrand got up on the Senate floor and told personal stories of the 9/11 survivors and their families who continue to grapple with severe health ailments (everything ranging from lung to urinary tract problems) in these years following the terrorist attack. Â She devised the strategy of using the lame-duck session of Congress to get the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act passed.
Gillibrandâs support for permanent federal R&D (Research & Development) tax credits is particularly notable. Â She believes that investing in and boosting high-tech research initiatives is the best way for American businesses to thrive in our global economy. Â Her promotion of the âMade in Americaâ movement includes a tax credit program for private sector manufacturing in communities that have suffered from the highest job loss rates. Â Gillibrand also links such growth to more investment in clean energy products, including solar, biofuel, wind, and hybrid vehicles â and to boost their ability to become economically lucrative through The SEAM Act (S.3324) introduced by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH).
Gillibrand is also not above admitting when she is wrong. Â For example, in 2011, she initially cosponsored U.S. Senator Patrick Leahyâs (D-VT) Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (S.968), aka âPIPA.â Â However, after hearing from constituents whoâd pointed out how the legislationâs attempts to curb piracy and copyright violations could also threaten to create First Amendment abuses online, Senator Gillibrand reevaluated and withdrew her support of it.
Through her efforts on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Gillibrand has worked with senatorial colleagues to better familiarize herself with issues important to soldiers and veterans. She cosponsored The Hiring Heroes Act (S.951), incentivizing job training and employment positions for veterans through tax breaks aimed at businesses.  Her work with The Wounded Warrior Project brings extra legislative attention to treating the mental health needs that prove to be a struggle for so many younger and older veterans alike.
Since joining the U.S. Senate, Gillibrand has tempered her previous pro-gun record with a willingness to compromise and agree to some common sense gun control.  Sheâs voted to legalize criminal background checks and to crack down on illegal gun trafficking.  In terms of preventing gun violence, Gillibrand emphasizes dealing with the core issues that lead to gun violence by implementing more afterschool programs and community policing measures while encouraging volunteerism. She believes that concealed carry laws should be strictly a statesâ rights issue.
Granted, the NRA will be unlikely to support her â but, in November 2020, I seriously doubt that the Democratic base or Independent voters will really care who has gotten the NRAâs endorsement.
In terms of health care reform, Senator Gillibrand was a huge proponent of the proposed âpublic optionâ (which ultimately failed to make it into the final version of Obamacare, due to the influence of corporatists). Â Her ideal goal would be to see an optional âMedicare For Allâ program extended nationwide, which would enable younger Americans who wish to utilize Medicare at earlier ages to pay a percentage of their income into a public plan that enhances the solvency of Medicare itself.
Along with Gillibrandâs emphasis on preventive care and V.A. Hospital improvements, she continues to be an advocate for lowering prescription drug costs through the cheaper importation of pharmaceuticals â most recently voting in favor of the failed measure coauthored by Bernie Sanders and Amy Klobuchar to allow the importation of cheaper prescription drugs into the U.S. from Canada and other countries. Â Incidentally, two of Gillibrandâs possible Democratic presidential primary opponents â Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) â both voted against it.
Undoubtedly, though, whenever anyoneâs running for the presidency, the art of âretail politicsâ and being able to connect with voters is essential. Â This is where Kirsten Gillibrand has authenticity in spades â especially compared to past Democratic nominees such as Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and Al Gore.
Now Iâm not going to pretend that Gillibrand came from some downtrodden working-class background. Â Her family was clearly upper-middle class. Â Her parents, Douglas and Polly Rutnik, were also both attorneys; her motherâs side of the family was well-connected (professionally and personally) to Erastus Corning, the mayor of Albany from 1942 to 1983. Â At the age of 14, she chose to attend the Emma Willard School â a four-year all-girlsâ high school â in order to obtain a more focused education. Â But the school also had an international student body, along with opportunities to take class trips abroad â which Gillibrand utilized to its fullest.
So, while she would never claim to have been The Little Match Girl as a youngster, Gillibrand has always taken an avid interest in global politics and international affairs beginning with her adolescence. Â
Her familyâs semi-affluence shouldnât negate another valuable asset that Kirsten Gillibrand has:Â unlike a lot of politicians who run for national office, she is someone real to whom voters can relate. Â She admits to having been an overachiever who loved to debate, as a child and a teenager; in fact, her childhood nickname was âLoudmouth.â Â Her parents divorced when she was in college, and sheâs attested to personally struggling with her own body image and weight throughout her political career.
Despite the Rutnik familyâs moderate wealth, they enjoyed going on duck hunts throughout Kirstenâs youth â which is probably part of the reason why she has such respect for the Second Amendment (along with hunting and home protection simply being part of the culture of the Albany area). Â She is Catholic (which would make her the first Catholic U.S. President since John F. Kennedy), and has participated in the Congressional Prayer Breakfast as well as Bible studies when she was in college. Â However, unlike a lot of other Blue Dog Democrats, she doesnât believe that her religious views should be inserted into social policy (hence her strong support for abortion rights and full LGBT equality).
Gillibrand is well-rounded. She speaks Mandarin semi-fluently â a result of her college era missionary work in China (actress Connie Britton was one of her Dartmouth peers and classmates in such endeavors).  In her younger days, Gillibrand volunteered with the Little Sisters Program, and became an active leader in the Womenâs Leadership Forum (a networking venue for female activists and leaders within the Democratic Party).
Kirstenâs husband, Jonathan (to whom sheâs been married since 2001), is someone whom she describes as soft-spoken and gentle. Â He was massively supportive of his wife when Andrew Cuomo first hired her to work in the D.C.-based HUD office. Â On top of that, Jonathan â a venture capitalist â loves socializing with his fellow congressional spouses at D.C. functions.
Interestingly, in addition to being the nationâs first âFirst Gentleman,â Jonathan Gillibrand would also be our nationâs second-ever immigrant First Spouse (with Melania Trump obviously becoming the first), as he is a British national. Â New York Magazineâs Stephen Rodrick describes Jonathan as a calming, slightly shy presence â essentially the yin to Kirstenâs high-energy yang, as the couple is characterized by journalist Whitney C. Harris. Â He willingly picked up the slack in parental duties as his wife made her weekend commutes between Washington D.C. and Albany during the earliest years of her legal and congressional careers. Â Since then, Kirsten and Jonathan have moved their family to D.C. permanently.
The Gillibrandsâ oldest son, Theo, is 13; their youngest son, Henry, is 8. Â It should be noted that the Gillibrand boys â if their mother is inaugurated in January 2021 â would be only slightly older than Sasha and Malia Obama were when President Obamaâs daughters moved into the White House back in 2009.
As Gillibrand describes it, in a March 2013 interview with Harris:
Theodore is more introverted.  Heâs someone who likes computers, who likes building â heâs a bit of an engineer.  He has intense friendships that he really enjoys. Heâs great at sports â soccer, baseball, taekwondo, squash, tennis.  Both Theo and Henry are very good at languages and they both love music. Henry is the extrovert.  He loves to go to parties, go out to dinner, meet people.  Heâs also very good at engineering and building â which both come from my husband.
They both have a great sense of beauty and design. Â Theyâre both sensitive boys, very sensitive of other people, but very different in personality. Â Henry is much more like me, and Theo is much more like Jonathan.
Senator Gillibrand has a strong foundation of family values and the progressive evolution of Americaâs family structure. Â She describes her brother, Doug Jr., as the best cook in their family. Â Her brother-in-law, Simon, had no problem agreeing to having Kirsten officiate the wedding of him and Kirstenâs sister, Erin.
As a child, Mayor Erastus Corning (a colleague â but also a family friend â of the Rutniks) gave young Kirsten a miniature microscope for her birthday, one year.  This was due to Mayor Corning recognizing Kirstenâs own interest in science and exploration.  Additionally, Corningâs wife, Elizabeth, raised flowers and peach trees in her own personal greenhouse. This childhood experience appreciated by Gillibrand will only give her a more open ear when it comes to making significant headway with agricultural innovation and water sustainability in the U.S (coupled with her legislative work on the Senate Agriculture Committee).
Kirsten Gillibrand is also allergic to cats. Â Even my own Trump-supporting mother â who is adverse to canines and felines â would be able to have empathy for that!
In her 2014 autobiography, Off the Sidelines: Speak Up, Be Fearless, and CHANGE YOUR WORLD, Gillibrand outlines her four-point plan for succeeding in raising oneâs voice to influence change. Â Her blueprint, in a nutshell:
1.) Â Donât wait around. Â Urgency is the key. Â If you care about something and are passionate for having an impact, let your emotions be raw when expressing WHY itâs so important to you.
2.) Â Look past the cynical voices out there. Â You must believe that there are people who will care about your issue or cause â itâs just a matter of locating them and reaching them, so you can collaborate and take your endeavor to the rest of the public.
3.) Â Be persistent. Â Whether itâs phone calls, emails, or confronting public servants and community leaders in person, thereâs no doubt that tenacity pays off. Â Be diplomatic...but also be assertive.
4.) Â Get the word out however you can â even if itâs through a more âminorâ platform such as Twitter or a local newspaper. Â You never know who might be listening or reading. Â Even if others dismiss a particular venue as âfrivolousâ or âinconsequentialâ â if itâs available to you, use it!
Gillibrand has proven to be a robust fundraiser. Â Sheâs been alternately praised and criticized for her tenacity and the âstick-to-her-gunsâ mindset sheâs utilized since arriving in Congress. Â And, tellingly, she hasnât been dogged by the allegations of foreign contributions that had plagued the Clinton Administration even from its earliest days in the 1990s.
But letâs talk about the proverbial donkey in the room: Â Hillary.
A close friend of mine (who supported Bernie Sanders, and is leaning toward Tulsi Gabbard for the 2020 presidential primaries) recently expressed to me his belief that Senator Gillibrandâs closeness with Secretary Clinton will hurt Gillibrand, image-wise, amongst many progressive and Independent voters.
Iâd counter that Gillibrandâs own merits, her affability, and her authentic personal style would only *help* to bridge the divide between âClinton loyalistsâ and âSanders progressives,â while uniting the Democratic base.
Letâs look at it another way. As an Independent voter, I happen to absolutely despise Al Gore as a politician (although I admire his work with environmental activism). I also am a huge supporter of U.S. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-CA) â and would get behind her for higher office in a heartbeat. Just because Linda Sanchez supported Al Gore during the 2000 Presidential Election â that doesnât mean Iâm going to hold it against Congresswoman Sanchez when looking at what *sheâs* done â or the values *she* embodies â INDIVIDUALLY.
In other words:Â we all can be mentored by certain people in our lives, but that doesnât require us to emulate them in every aspect of life.Â
Senator Gillibrand shouldnât be ashamed of her past support for Hillary Clintonâs legislative goals and efforts. At the same time, Gillibrand herself can choose to take a decidedly âanti-Clintonâ tone as it relates to her own approach to governing.
At this current stage in the political world, Senator Gillibrand publicly says sheâs focused on getting reelected to her senatorial seat in 2018 and continuing to serve the people of New York there. As well she should. Cory Booker is saying the same thing, right now. Chris Murphy is saying the same thing, right now. Tim Kaine is saying the same thing, right now.
Guess who also said the same thing, after being seated as a freshman U.S. Senator in 2005? Future President Barack Obama. Barely two years into his first term, then-Senator Obama ended up changing his mind.Â
No one is going to admit to seriously considering a presidential run until after the 2018 midterms are over.
Moreover, when it comes to female empowerment, Senator Gillibrand is well-positioned to pick up the torch of determination that so many of Hillary Clintonâs supporters harbored â while also bringing new supporters into the fold, including many of those who may have personally disliked Secretary Clinton. I believe that the positive qualities visible in Gillibrandâs confidence and strength would close the gender gap by even bringing more male voters to support the Democratic ticket.
Men place high value on merit, quality, and personal accomplishments. And Gillibrandâs platform is a living, breathing testament to such values.
Senator Gillibrand was instrumental in getting the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed in 2009. Sheâs pushed for support of the Pay Fairness Act (S.554). Her proposed tax incentives target scholarships at students â particularly young females â who want to pursue STEM careers. Such legislation that sheâs participated in putting on the table has included: the National STEM Tax Incentive for Teachers Act (S.1055); the Undergraduate Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Act (S.3830); and the Roosevelt Scholars Act (S.2789).
Other initiatives Gillibrand has embraced to help achieve national economic progress include providing tax credits for working parents who telecommute, increasing the cap on tax credits for child care, and requiring paid family leave for federal workers while encouraging it at the state level.
Ideologically, she hits the right âsweet spotsâ that would resonate brilliantly with a diverse and opinionated American electorate. She possesses a wealth of experience, sheâs positive, she has bipartisan allies, and she displays excellent communication skills. Her platform assembles planks that are important to progressives, liberals, moderates, and even some libertarians: government transparency, food security, LGBT equality, universal health care, environmental protection, female empowerment, and gun ownership rights balanced with reasonable levels of gun control.Â
Plus, millions of working moms can relate to her as a career woman who has juggled her professional commitments with raising a family.
Gillibrand may not bring in a specific âpurpleâ battleground state for the Democrats on their national ticket (although her hypothetical running mate could have the potential to do so). But that hasnât stopped presidents from achieving electoral successes when theyâve held solidly-blue or solidly-red residences. Democrats had a lock on New York during Franklin Rooseveltâs campaigns. Democrats also had a lock on Massachusetts during John F. Kennedyâs campaign. Republicans had a lock on Texas when George W. Bush ran. And Democrats already had a lock on Illinois (and Hawaii) during Barack Obamaâs presidential runs.
Based on her personality and policy initiatives, a Gillibrand candidacy may have even longer coat-tails for Democrats, nationally, than Obamaâs campaign in 2008 did.
No one is expecting Trump â or any other potential Republican standard-bearer â to be easy to beat in 2020. But if the electoral successes of two-term presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have taught us anything, itâs that issues and personality must fuse together in presidential politics to make a winning combination.Â
Kirsten Gillibrand combines an aura of candor and honesty (at least, to the extent that any politician can realistically be honest) with a compelling personal story and, most importantly, an embrace of GOOD LEGISLATION that would be sensible and popular.
On the national campaign trail, this will shine through in a dynamic way â very likely making her the first woman to reach the White House as 46th President of the United States.

A Road Map to Shopping Like a Royal
The British royal family has long been a source of public fascination, captivating mere mortals in Britain and beyond with a passion for all things Windsor.
Toss a wedding into the mix â specifically one so storybook as the coming nuptials of Prince Harry and his American fiancĂŠe, Meghan Markle, on May 19 â and the excitement swells: Where will Meghan shop in London? Where will Harry buy her jewelry? Is there a favorite perfume, chocolate or hat-maker (which raises the question: will Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, offer her new sister-in-law, an actress and former model, a crash course in headpiece etiquette?)
Paparazzi can only capture so much. Another way to gain insight into the predilections of the royal family is by examining the brands that hold the royal warrant â the top-of-the-line British purveyors that have earned the royal familyâs seal of approval.
Royal warrants, which have been issued by the British royal family since the 15th century, are a mark of distinction for companies who have provided goods and services for at least five years to Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip or Prince Charles. Suppliers range from silversmiths, champagne houses, perfumers and shoemakers to agricultural crop sprayers and biscuit brands. There are currently about 800 royal warrant holders throughout Britain.
Vetting is fierce. If approved (most applicants are not), the company snags the ultimate endorsement: the honor of displaying the royal coat of arms, along with the prestigious âby appointmentâ legend alongside the company logo, a practice that can be traced to the reign of Elizabeth I.
With the help of a royal warrant road map, tourists can effectively shop the royal familyâs go-to brands, centuries-old companies that represent top quality, heritage and craftsmanship. A guide to the warrants offers something for everyone. The brands are not only for people who can afford to buy a $5,000 bespoke suit without batting an eye, but includes purveyors of cheese, tea, books and grooming products. The road map is an opportunity to scoop up meaningful souvenirs without spending a fortune.
Companies with the royal warrant are so well respected that at least two fashionable hotels, the Beaumont and Hotel Cafe Royal, are offering royal wedding packages that feature walking tours to some of these esteemed businesses.
While nobody can predict the shopping habits of Meghan and Harry, history suggests where they might shop â at purveyors holding the royal warrant.
Royal Grocers and Provisions Merchants Royal Tea Merchants and Grocers 181 Piccadilly London fortnumandmason.com
Founded in 1707 by Hugh Mason, a grocer, and William Fortnum, a royal footman to Queen Anne, Fortnum & Mason became a purveyor of tea and fine food credited with transforming Britainâs culinary landscape by introducing classics like the Scotch egg, a hard-boiled egg encased in sausage meat and dusted with fried breadcrumbs. In the process, they popularized the luxury picnic hamper with ready-to-eat provisions and expanding the consumption of tea beyond the aristocracy.
In the 1920s, sports, cutting edge fashion, interior design and an expedition department (Fortnumâs provisioned the first expedition to Mount Everest) were added to the mix effectively creating a department store. Since its inception, the company has served 12 monarchs with continuous royal warrants. Today, it holds two warrants;Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles.
Tea and the accompanying delicacies â biscuits, preserves, specialty honey, chocolate â are still the companyâs foundation. Surprisingly, a classic hamper costs less than buying products separately. The Mini Huntsman Basket (a keepsake wicker hamper filled with specialties like Assam Superb tea, rose and violet cream chocolates, marmalade and Florentine biscuits) is an excellent souvenir. Or, you can splurge on a formal afternoon tea at the storied Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. The company archivist, Dr. Andrea Tanner, leads a Delicious History tour every second Thursday at 11 a.m.
Royal Cheesemonger 93 Jermyn Street London paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk
The pungent aroma of orange-skinned, washed-rind cheese (Stinking Bishop, anyone?) is the calling card of this shop, established in 1797. Its bounty of artisanal cheeses (mostly British) supplies grand hotels, top restaurants, discerning Londoners and, of course, the palace with top drawer dairy products. Queen Victoria granted Paxton & Whitfield its first warrant as cheesemonger to the Royal Household in 1850. The brand has held onto this honor with subsequent warrants issued by King Edward VII, King George V, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and the Prince of Wales. New this year is an Academy of Cheese, a daylong tutorial for cheese enthusiasts. Tip: Go hungry and ask the cheese stewards for samples of esoteric products like the Fleur de Maquis, a Corsican ewe cheese encased in rosemary and juniper berries.
Royal Hospitality Services 15 Beeston Place London thegoring.com
The Goring, which is steps from Buckingham Palace, was where Kate Middleton (and her entire family) chose to spend the night before her wedding to William. It also served as the preferred perch for royalty during the coronations of George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, and is an unofficial luxury annex for visiting dignitaries.
In the age of minimalist, feels-like-anywhere design, as classic hotels are swallowed up by corporate behemoths, itâs inspiring to stay at a century-old property still owned and operated by the family that built it. The Goring revels in its Britishness. The Michelin-starred Dining Room (that, naturally, showcases British classics like Eggs Drumkilbo, an egg, prawn and lobster dish favored by the late Queen Mother) was designed by interiors heavyweight David Linley, nephew of Queen Elizabeth II. The grand rooms and lobby were recently refurbished by the countryâs top artisans to inject a rich, undeniably feels-like-London charm; bespoke furnishings by the respected manufacturer Manborne, Fromentalâs exquisite hand-gilded wallpaper, as well as colorful Gainsborough Silk wall coverings and curtains.
Instead of run-of-the-mill butlers, there are red-liveried footmen, a detail that could read as tacky if not for the splendid surroundings and royal family legacy.
In 2013, The Goring was the first and only hotel to be granted a royal warrant from Queen Elizabeth II. If you canât afford a stay, stop in for afternoon tea (in the lounge where the Queen has held her Christmas lunch) or a cocktail in the glamorous crimson-hued bar.
Royal Hairdressers 71 St Jamesâs St. London truefittandhill.co.uk
William Francis Truefitt started out as court wig maker to King George III, before setting up shop in 1805 to offer luxury barbery services (first wig-making and styling â a time-consuming affair), and later, haircuts to Londonâs gentry. The pairing of pampering hot towel wet shave with the air of a gentlemenâs club (services always came with a shoe shine) attracted high society, namely Oscar Wilde, Lord Byron, Beau Brummell, Charles Dickens, Sir Winston Churchill and the royal family.
In 1875, hair âpreparationsâ were introduced, leading the way to shaving accessories (the old school silvertip badger hair brush, razor and stand make a stylish souvenir), fragrance and skin products, all crafted in Britain. Today, the traditional shave and other services (still complete with complimentary shoe shine) are performed by barbers nattily attired in white shirt with monogrammed waistcoat and tie. The company has had nine consecutive royal warrants and currently holds one from Prince Philip.
Royal Booksellers 187 Piccadilly London hatchards.co.uk
What began in 1797 as a literary coffee house producing political pamphlets and publications spotlighting social issues of the day is Londonâs oldest bookseller. The shopâs welcome-to-my townhouse charm â elegant wood paneling, tucked-away fireplaces and a wooden spiral staircase â is underscored by staff-curated tables loaded with selections from well-known and more esoteric British scribes like P.G. Wodehouse, Nancy Mitford, Evelyn Waugh, Agatha Christie and Kingsley Amis. Check the schedule for book signings; high profile artists (recently, Julian Barnes) are often on the docket.
On top of buying a book (the shop is well-known for autographed hardbacks and first editions bound in leather with decorative William Morris endpapers), bibliophiles can sign on for Hatchardsâs monthly subscription service which can be delivered anywhere in the world. Hatchards gained its first royal warrant in the 18th century from Queen Charlotte, wife of George II and continues to hold all three warrants from Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Prince Charles.
Royal Purveyors of Chocolates 14 Princes Arcade London prestat.co.uk
This century-old chocolatierâs quirky heritage has amassed a cult following. The actor John Gielgud, Cher, Tina Turner and Paul McCartney have nipped in to sample pâte de fruit âfruity babesâ and ginger hunks while the 19th- and early-20th-century French actress Sarah Bernhardt commissioned a specialty inverted violet crème in 1910, a Prestat classic known to have been the Queen Motherâs favorite flavor. One famous relationship was with the novelist Roald Dahl whose passion for Prestat truffles landed Prestat a starring role in his novel âMy Uncle Oswaldâ and is said to have inspired the childrenâs book, âWilly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.â
Truffles (William and Kate served them at their wedding) are best-sellers. The boozy âPopping Pink Prosecco,â a tangy Yuzu sake and London gin (that dramatically fizzes in the mouth) are newer incarnations, while the classic Marc de Champagne (using the founder Antoine Dufourâs original recipe from 1895) is still in demand. The shop is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen May 14.
Royal Hatters 6 St. Jamesâs Street London lockhatters.co.uk
Since 1676, Lock & Co. Hatters has created toppers for royals and aristocracy. The business designed the bicorne hat, the de rigueur military accouterment of the time, worn by Admiral Lord Nelson in the Battle of Trafalgar, invented the bowler, popularized the fedora and tweed newsboy, and have remained the go-to for top hats (Sir Winston Churchill wore one to his wedding in 1908) through the present day. Itâs still a family-run business operating from the same four-story building since 1759.
In 1993, Lock introduced womenâs high fashion millinery (statement head pieces are a popular trend in Britain; the Duchess of Cambridge frequently sports Lockâs designs to formal occasions) though classic designs remain best-sellers.
As in the past, customersâ heads are measured with a Victorian-looking contraption called a conformateur; purchases come in a hand-cut, paper-and-card hatbox, a souvenir in and of itself. The firm holds two royal warrants: Prince Philip and Prince Charles. Lock partnered with the jeweler Garrard & Co, also the holder of a royal warrant, to fit George IVâs crown to Queen Elizabeth IIâs head for her 1953 coronation, relining the interior with ermine and purple velvet.
Royal Livery Tailors 15 Savile Row London henrypoole.com
A military tailoring outfit begun during the Napoleonic Wars evolved into the court tailor to Queen Victoria in 1869, producing the palaceâs livery, or official uniform. After meeting and then outfitting Queen Victoriaâs son, the Prince of Wales (known as Bertie), Pooleâs popularity soared.
This relationship produced modern black-tie dress. In 1865, tired of fussy white-tie evening dress with coattails, the fashionable Bertie asked Poole to design a more informal ensemble â âa short silk smoking jacket with silk collar and cuffs, lined silk; a pair of trousers to matchâ â for entertaining at his country home in Sandringham. This look would later come to be known as the tuxedo.
Poole was also Savile Rowâs founding tailor. The firmâs bespoke suiting (the process requires three fittings and between 80 to 120 hours of hand stitching) attracted an international clientele, Czar Alexander II of Russia, Sir Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, J.P. Morgan, William Randolph Hearst, Frank Lloyd Wright, among others. The merchant has served each monarch since Queen Victoria which has translated into Pooleâs livery and other garments being worn at every coronation, jubilee and royal wedding since the merchant was issued the first warrant in 1869. Sartorial buffs can book a visit to the archive room where leather-bound books detailing every client since 1846 are stored.
Royal Perfumers Royal Manufacturers of Toilet Preparations 89 Jermyn Street, St. Jamesâs London florislondon.com
Floris is an independent, family-run business, and operates from the Jermyn Street premises where it was founded in 1730. Originally a barber, but also trained in perfumery, Juan Famenias Floris introduced a zesty lime unisex fragrance in the late 18th century that became an instant hit, offering both an uplifting perfume and an olfactory tool to combat the stench of Londonâs sewage-strewn streets. Soon, classic floral scents â rose, lily of the valley, violet, stephanotis â were sold alongside grooming products, bespoke fragrances concocted for wealthy clients in the shopâs cellar. While most royal warrant holders are hush-hush about their customers, Floris has a small museum in the back of the shop with letters and archived receipts from various palaces and high-wattage clientele like Sir Winston Churchill (Special No. 127 and Stephanotis, both of which are still available), Ian Fleming (No. 89; Fleming also mentions Floris in the James Bond novels âMoonraker,â âDiamonds are Foreverâ and âDr. No,â Marilyn Monroe (Rose Geranium) and Queen Elizabeth II. Floris received its first royal warrant from King George IV in 1820.
Royal Jewellers, Goldsmiths and Silversmiths 24 Albemarle Street London garrard.com
Established in 1735, The House of Garrard, which also functioned as silversmiths, received its first royal commission from Frederick, Prince of Wales (a black ebony teapot handle) that same year. Queen Victoria appointed Garrard as Crown Jewelers in 1843 and the house has served every monarch since then, crafting five crowns (still worn for state occasions) which can be viewed at the Tower of London Jewel House, a dazzling exhibit of royal regalia, including the Crown Jewels, where tourists are transported through displays by way of a moving walkway).
On top of countless royal commissions, Garrard is known for exquisite tiaras, including the Cambridge Loverâs Knot, a headpiece of 19 diamond-encrusted arches framing large drop-shaped pearls that has been passed down from Queen Mary to Queen Elizabeth II and lent to Princess Diana, and recently worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, in addition to the âGirls of Britain and Ireland tiara,â the spiky diadem with a band of round and lozenge-shaped diamonds frequently worn by Queen Elizabeth II and featured on British bank notes.
Todayâs collections are understated, inspired by regal heritage but designed for contemporary life. You can visit the Queen Mary salon upstairs (by appointment) to view paintings of the royal crowns and try on a few imitation tiaras from the royal collection.
