i think tim was hard to talk to. but not hard in the way that he joked too much. no, in the way that he was standoffish and short with people. he had a goal, a drive, and he couldn't let anyone or anything distract him.

(cough buried tim drowning under grief cough desolation tim prepared to burn the world down cough lonely tim who has no one at all and barely had danny before he disappeared cough i could go on)

sasha was the one who drew him out of his shell. who took him out to the bar, to loosen up. she became his single spot of light in the dark cave that he was lost in.

and then jon, who was a little too much like him that it kind of jolted tim out of the headspace. he ate lunch with jon, they helped each other with research, they grew close ish. tim is the only person who knows about georgie.

and then jon got promoted and sasha didn't and he was just a little bitter towards jon. jon is still his friend, so he tried to hide it behind jokes and a smile, because he's gotten back into the mindset of 'humor to cope', but still.

and then sasha is gone and jon is Becoming and danny is—and the circus—

and then nothing, because tim is no more.

hey guys did you know that um. did you know. first of all did you know i'm losing my mind, secondly, do y'all remember in tma how when someone reads a written statement, they don't really Stop unless they're interrupted? and they read the whole thing easy cheesy, no issues with reading whatever words are there? like. jon literally could read french for a whole statement and was Fine. granted, that's Jon, but like nobody else struggled with pronunciations and whatnot (that i can recall)

presumably, this is an eye thing. either as employees of the institute, or because everyone there is just also eye-aligned in some degree (melanie had the ghost hunting show, the eye is fond of martin, etc)

and then there's tim in season 3 ep 86

[Sigh] Statement of… uh, Benjamin Hatendi… Hateendi? Regarding a… [papers rustling] a blanket. Dead friend. Monster. Regarding his unavoidable and gruesome end. How he tried to hide. He couldn’t. Statement is from… 1983, March 2nd. And I guess… [long sigh] I guess I’m doing this one. Tim Stoker. Archival assistant… Archival prisoner at the Magnus Institute.

correct me if im wrong but i don't recall anyone struggling with pronunciations before this bit. but that's not even the biggest thing here, that's just a lil Taste, a lil Flavor.

note the phrasing there. "Regarding his unavoidable and gruesome end." why would he say this when the written text on the statement says this:

Uh, right. Benjamin Hatendi’s account of… [rustling pages] oh for… a, a strange encounter. Er, statement date, March 2nd, 1983. Melanie King recording. Apparently.

"a strange encounter". that's it. nothing about an unavoidable death, just a "strange encounter". Tim Why Did You Say That.

why would our dear timothy bimothy, who is being pushed to the brink, who is becoming rapidly more depressed and losing hope, say this?

this isn't the only time he's said some weirdly grim shit tho (ep 104)

and then there's this bit from elias apparently having Looked into tim (also 104)

TIM All right, hit me with your X-ray eyes then, boss. What do you see? ELIAS Disruption. An unpredictable, angry man with nothing left but the desire to feel in some way revenged. TIM [Sarcastic] Ooh, terrifying! Surely only magic could have let you see so deep inside my very soul.

"nothing left" but the desire to feel revenged. and tim doesn't dispute this, because it's true.

when he first joined the institute he did so in order to look for answers about danny, but then he stopped seriously looking. and now that the circus is back, this is all the drive he has left. not looking for answers, just wanting revenge. closure. an end, if you will.

this is Literally It For Him. a couple lines later he suggests elias kill him, he's At The Breaking Point.

he is so tired, he's lost all hope, and he's saying all this grim shit about "unavoidable death" and "this is how it was always going to go" like hmmmm sounds familiar doesn't it. DOESN'T IT (<- is going insane)

(ep 11) [....] despite the rapid response of the paramedics and how much of his medical history I had immediately to hand, there was nothing I could do to save him. (ep 11) I have no responsibility to try and prevent whatever fate is coming for you. Based on my previous experience, such a thing is likely impossible anyway,[....] (ep 121) There. That was it. That was our fate; where we would always be.

hmmmm sounds a bit like oliver huh? everyone's favorite ex-accountant avatar of the end?? right??

but then there's this last bit i have from ep 86.

why did he stop reading the statement

Statement. “My parents never let me have a nightlight. I was always afraid, but they were ju–” Ugh, this is stupid.

why did he do that. again, correct me if im wrong but when else has someone just Stopped Reading like that without someone or something else interrupting them? why could tim just stop himself?

my theory is this: at this point, tim is completely gone from being aligned with the eye. he no longer seeks to know what happened to danny, he just wants closure. he doesn't wanna do any statement work, and he keeps mentioning these tidbits about hopelessness and the inevitability of terrible events, specifically death.

the eye isn't compelling him to read the statements like it does the others, because it doesn't have as strong a hold anymore. the grip is slipping from him. and by the time the unknowing rolls around, maybe it's lost him for good. maybe he finally fell into a different power he never meant to serve, and yet, he does.

and maybe. just maybe. because i'm so not in denial. but MAYBE. he did die in the unknowing. but maybe he got better.

Fun little art based off a post i saw ages ago and can barely remember. Basically the idea that Tim made a stupid doodle of Sasha pre-Not Them on a post-it and stuck it to his laptop, and he never knew why he kept it until after he found out what happened to her and realized he would never know what she actually looked like beyond that drawing :)

Set shortly after MAG92.

With a burned hand and an healing cut on his throat, John is in no condition to take care of himself. Tim finds him on the verge of tears in his office, after a failed attempt at tying his hair that resulted in the reopening of his wounds. So, for reasons outside Tim’s understanding, he impulsively decides to take him home, help him wash up and finally do his hair in a simple braid.

Do you ever think about the others finding little things left behind by Sasha? The original Sasha. Jon or Tim realizes they still have some of her hair ties. Martin realizes he never returned that pen he borrowed. Little things. Things that don't mean anything to anyone but them, but to them they mean the world. Because it was hers. It proves she really did exist and they knew her and they aren't mourning a phantom.

"Who am I even sad for?" Is a line that I think hits as hard as it does because who is he sad for? Surely not the thing who posed as his friend for a year while he didn't know. Not for himself, because how could he extend that grief to himself? And it feels. Wrong, somehow, to mourn the original Sasha. Because he can't even remember her face. He can't remember her. But he lost her all the same. So who does he grieve?

Jon refuses to accept it as absolute. He keeps asking about it. Is she gone? Is there no way to bring her back? Is there nothing that can be done to fix this? And there's not. For all his questions, all his begging and searching, even the more he learns about the fears and how they work. Nothing is ever going to be enough to bring her back. Nothing fixes this. She's gone. And he can't bring her back.

After the Unknowing, Tim dies.

Apparently not.

The moment he is supposed to die, he wakes up in his bed, confused. Did the Unknowing not happen? Was that a dream?

“Morning.”

It’s Sasha. Tim doesn’t recognize her, so he questions who she is. Very nonchalantly, she says that she’s the real Sasha because she was the one who got skinned during the Prentice invasion. Lucky comes in and backs up her claim. Tim doesn’t believe this to be the real Sasha still, so Lucky hits him with an Eye-adjacent memory beam(Like Elias’s trauma beam, but helpful). He remembers the real Sasha. And the woman in front of him is her.

He thinks it’s great, because she’s alive. They can go and tell everyone that Elias’s evil little plan to replace Sasha failed.

Well…

“No. We aren’t telling anyone that I’m alive. We aren’t telling anyone that you’re alive either.”

Tim is confused. Why wouldn’t they tell everyone that they’re alive? What, is she some off the grid criminal?

Sasha pulls her sleeve up, exposing the top of her wrist. It’s bloody. The back of her neck is too. And her ankles. The light in her eyes has died. Lucky is standing in the doorway.

“…What the hell is this… Never mind, I’m getting out of here.” Tim tries to leave. Tries.

He wakes up somewhere he doesn’t recognize. A fake version of himself being sewn into his skin. He is in the same position as Sasha now.

According to everyone else, they are dead. According to Lucky and a certain friend… they are nothing but puppets to be used and abused.

i've been thinking about tim, lately. maybe he's so mad at jon for becoming a monster because he Knows that danny was also turned into one after he was taken (the assumption here being that tim, as an employee of the eye, has just a bit of extra knowledge). and. and do you think that tim wants to stop jon from being lost to him. because i don't think tim had a lot of friends in research besides sasha, drowning in grief as he was. danny is lost to him even as he can't accept that and now he's seeing, not a kidnapping where he doesn't know what's happening, but a slow transformation that he's unable to prevent.

he's already lost his brother and (though he doesn't know it yet) his best friend. he can't handle losing jon.

(and we see that in the season three finale, where he deliberately sets off the explosion in a way that he knows will take him with them.)
