Blue Album (1995)
It happened upon a summer night that my dad handed me the Blue Album. I opened it up and there they were: these alien guys next to a bright Venus disc. I placed the CD gently into my 6-disc carousel and put on my headphones.
The first song on the album is Down - a song I heard previously on the radio and was not really captured by. In its entirety, Down is a fun, high energy song...but then Random played next. Then Loco, All Mixed Up...by the end of the album I thought WTF did I just listen to?!
Like all of 311's albums, the Blue Album is a conflation of styles melded seamlessly together to create the unique 311 sound. It's crunchy funk, rap reggae, groovy alternative reggae, heavy-guitar-dancehall, and something else. The album was actually recorded in haste - they were just beginning to blow up and had an obligation to Capricorn to record this, so the Blue Album has a unique short-and-sweet vibe compared to their other albums. Some songs are mainstays in their concert setlists, while others are deep track gems.
My favorite songs:
Purpose
Dont Stay Home
Sweet
Guns (Are for Pussies)
*311's music is not for the casual listener. Their music is nuanced and layered. Also, a huge part of what makes this band special is in the lyrics. Please ask a 311 fan to curate a playlist before attempting to listen to their catalogue.

BEHOLD! The 90’s TV Dad Molecule
Seven actors all connected together in three movies or less, without using John Ratzenberger (who connects three of them via Pixar).
I also discovered afterward that John Goodman, Jon Lithgow, and Joan Cusack (who was also in Toy Story 4) were all in Confessions of a Shopaholic together, but I didn’t know that at the time, so it doesn’t count. I did it without it.

(Archive) Animated movie of the day: The Iron Giant (1999)
Originally posted: January 2nd, 2022
What if a gun had a soul? This is the question that motivated this film's director, Brad Bird, to pursue this project. Such a particular reflection didn't come from nowhere, however. Not unlike the children's book that inspired it(called The Iron Man), it came from a place of grief. While in Ted Hughes case it came from the loss of his wife, in Bird's case it came from the lost of his sister to an act of violence from her own husband.
And this grief and contempt for violence is at the core of the film. It's exploration of loss and mortality is as tender as it is elegant, where a kid can play the role of the older brother to the child-like giant thanks to knowing said loss. It's criticism towards violence is also nuanced and detailed, raging from discussing the human consequences to showing many of it's absurd motivators. It takes the chance to make a scathing statement about America's cold war paranoia and the poison that is the "strike first" mentality for what it is: A self destructive endeavor for which innocent people pay the price.
But more importantly, there's the theme of choice. No matter the circumstances, you choose what you do with what you have. If a killer robot from outer space can assert it's own identity as a hero who values the beauty of life, so can we. A beautiful modern fairy tale using scifi and comic book imagery for it's allegory, that is as fun as it is touching, but also genuinely valuable. An underrated masterpiece that is finally getting it's due.

The Iron Giant (1999)
Tumblr media
A box-office disappointment when released in 1999, The Iron Giant is proof that box office results shouldn’t matter to you unless you're seeing a share of the profits. This is a wonderful film, ripe to be discovered (or re-discovered if it’s been a while) at home. Filled with heartfelt emotion and rich characters, I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying it.
It’s 1957, the middle of the space race. A strange object falls from the sky near the small town of Rockwell, Maine. The strange visitor is a 50-foot-tall metal-eating robot (voiced by Vin Diesel) who befriends a lonely young boy named Hogarth (Eli Marienthal). With the help of a beatnik artist named Dean (Harry Connick, Jr.), Hogarth tries to keep his new friend a secret. That becomes increasingly difficult as a suspicious government spook named Kent Mansley (voiced by Christopher McDonald) investigates.
So loosely based on the novel by Ted Hughes it might as well be an original creation, this tale is rich with detail and care. You can watch it over and over and always pick up something new - even if you've seen the new Signature Collection enough times to memorize the added scenes. Director Brad Bird, who helped shape the story along with screenwriter Tim McCanlies must’ve scrutinized every line in the script, every single storyboard with a fine-toothed comb to ensure the results would be everything they could be. In Hogarth the viewers find a curious, lonely boy who shows maturity beyond his age (perhaps due to the death of his father) but also gets excited – as any of us would – at the prospect of befriending a giant metal man. The titular giant alternately takes on the role of child and parent to Hogarth and as they explore their corner of the world together, their adventures make for many great comedic moments. Then, Mansley will get a bit too close. The film becomes a nail-biter. To complete the gamut of emotions, there's the conclusion. I dare you not to tear up but all the way through, you’ll laugh. Big, varied laughs come from all sorts of directions except for below the belt.
This is a movie for everyone. It’s so clever, so funny and so… real. Even the film’s villain and side characters receive that extra bit of attention to make them feel like they exist beyond the confines of the screen. Mansley isn’t so much evil as he is a product of his time. He’s a jerk at points and takes things too far, but the film uses its setting to make you understand exactly what goes through his mind. You almost feel bad for him when he's made to look a fool. If you’re seeing the film with small children, be prepared to have long, animated discussions about all of the characters’ choices.
All that, and it’s a great-looking movie. You may be able to strain your eyes and pick out which scenes use computer imagery to create the perfectly crisp outline of the giant, but the effort will feel like a waste. It’s basically seamless. I’ve seen this film so many times I know nearly every line and gag by heart but it still enchants me.
Sometimes, I award 5-star ratings to movies but I secretly want to add an asterisk. I might be lenient because the politics of social norms of the time were different than now, the picture was the first of its kind and there’s no way anyone would’ve thought of doing X rather than Y or the flaws I see are so minuscule you’re just forced to ignore them. The Iron Giant doesn't need an asterisk. It's a perfect film; the kind I'd like everyone to see. (Signature Edition on Blu-ray, August 17, 2018)

#33, 47, 74, and 99 for the 501st follower celebration?
I shall FINALLY answer this one, in honor of the Ahsoka show coming out in LESS THAN TWO HOURS I'M TOTALLY NORMAL AND STABLE (lie)
33: Hera & Lucy are famous singers and Tim, Jackson, and Kanan are their bodyguards Au. The title says it all. Plus also Nolan is their agent. Have a little snippet below:
“I still can’t believe Nolan got us BODYGUARDS,” Lucy complained, pacing as best she could in the enclosed space of Hera’s trailer. The other woman gave her a patiently amused look.
“In his defense, Lucy, we’ve both received plenty of death threats.”
“Yeah, well, this is invasive,” Lucy grumbled, flopping down onto the couch. “That Bradford guy is already the grumpiest drill sergeant of a guy I’ve ever met.”
“I didn’t think he was that bad.”
Scoffing, Lucy said, “How would you know? You were too busy flirting with your bodyguard with the ponytail.”
“I was not!” Shooting her an offended look, Hera said, “All I’m saying is that we should make the best of the situation.”
“You do that.” Frowning thoughtfully, Lucy said, “I, on the other hand, am going to try and get rid of them. Especially Bradford.”
“This should end well,” Hera sighed.
47: Frank gets Snapped. Also pretty self explanatory!
“So let me get this straight,” Frank said slowly, trying to wrap his mind around what he was being told. He was used to a world where things were, if not straightforward, at the very least no magic was involved. “This alien guy—”
“Thanos,” Amy provided as she poured them both a cup of coffee.
“Right, him. He snapped his fingers and erased half of humanity?”
Nodding, Amy said, “Pretty much. Well, it helped that he had these magic gems called Infinity Stones that controlled key aspects of the universe—”
Holding up a hand, Frank said, “Too much.”
“Right. Sorry.” Sliding him his coffee cup, she said, “Anyways, long story short, now you guys are back… after five years.”
Frank cursed under his breath, running a hand over his forehead. “Five years. What— who else? Besides me?”
He knew the first name that leapt to mind, but reluctantly pushed it aside to ask, “Curtis?”
“He was fine,” Amy assured him. “He was the first— well, second person I called when everything went down.” They both knew who the first person was. “He and I teamed up to look for some of the others. That’s how I met your friend David Lieberman.”
Frank’s eyes widened. “You’re kidding.”
“Nope. He was really helpful in finding everyone. He, uh— his wife got snapped. But both of his kids were fine.”
Wincing at the memory of Sarah— the kind woman who’d offered him that fancy wine— Frank said, “Got it. What about, ah, Madani?”
“She made it,” Amy assured him. “Mahoney didn’t, though.”
Nodding slowly, Frank said, “Right. And you found some of the others?”
“Yeah, David’s hacking skills made him pretty helpful. Other people hired him for it, too.” Amy half-grinned. “We thought we found you alive, one time. This guy hunting down crime lords. But Curtis figured you weren’t the sword type, and this guy, apparently, “didn’t move like you”, whatever that means.”
“Sword, huh?” Frank took a sip of his coffee. “Seems inefficient.”
“See, you say that, but he managed to kill a whole crap ton of guys. Major assassin skills going on there.”
“Huh. Not bad.” Frank took another long sip, playing for time before he asked the question. He was already scared of the answer. “What about, uh—”
“Karen made it,” Amy told him before he could force the words out. “She didn’t think you were sword guy either– although we were all a little disappointed. Her lawyer buddies didn’t make it, though.”
Frank grimaced at the thought— Karen alone, without Red or the shorter guy who’d been scared at the sight of him, but still stubborn and smart. She’d been alone for five whole years. She hadn’t known where he was for five whole years.
Time to fix that. Downing the rest of his coffee, he rose to his feet. “I gotta go.”
Smirking, Amy said, “I figured. Let me get my stuff— New York is a long drive.”
74: The Wraiths being trained by Vostress. I've posted this one before, but I have another snippet for you, as a treat!!
99: B99 Au. Believe it or not I actually have multiple Brooklyn 99 inspired aus. This one is set in the Star Wars universe and is MUCH chaos, very fun.
“So let me get this straight,” Fox said, staring at Kanan. “Not only did you lose the criminal Dark O’Reilly again—”
“Less lose and more he slipped out of our clutches,” Kanan offered.
“—but you spent part of the time that you should have used trying to thwart him to sing karaoke with him?”
Shrugging, Kanan said, “What can I say? He does an excellent “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
Fox let out a sigh, rubbing his forehead with a grimace. “How is someone as intelligent as Syndulla in love with you?”
Grinning, Kanan said, “I ask myself that question every day, Captain. Honestly, I’m so lucky to have her. She’s incredibly beautiful and smart and—”
“Get out of this office.”
“Absolutely.”

I. The Beginning
A/N: The official first chapter of Hearts Burst Into Fire. This one is a little squishy with sweetness but I could not help it.
This story will have a school shooting in it, just be forewarned. I will put a trigger warning for that, so you can read past it.
It will have sexual content, violence, mentions of wounds, parental affection, ghost friendships, and language.
With that said, on we go!
Also, just a little background, there will be odd little tidbits of information that link Royce and Sam together from the beginning. So, keep an eye out.
I have had this story on the backburner for five years. As such, Ellie is Russian. Which was how I originally had it written. She also has another daughter, mentioned in this chapter.
Tumblr media
Gotta hold on easy as I let you go.
Gonna tell you how much I love you, though you think you already know.
I remember I thought you looked like an angel wrapped in pink so soft and warm.
You've had me wrapped around your finger since the day you were born.
You're beautiful baby from the outside in.
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll lead you home again.
Go on, take on this whole world.
But to me you know you'll always be, my little girl.

Andrew Mahoney’s Junkyard
Andrew watched with shock as the wet, blood splattered infant was gently wrapped in blankets by his son, the tiny creature looking like a football in his giant hands. The mother, Ellie, stared up, sweaty and exhausted with a smile on her face as she watched Horace interact with his daughter.
His daughter.
The word in his mind drew Andrew up short.
Horace, the son he had kept hidden most of his life to protect him, had not only managed to attract a woman who looked past his flaws, but had managed to knock her up.
Horace was a father.
More importantly, he was a grandfather.
Regaining his senses, he walked forward and pushed some of Ellie’s sweaty hair off of her forehead. She had been in labor for 72 hours but had refused to go to the hospital. While Andrew had been suspicious that she was hiding - or running - away from something, he had not pressed.
Afterall, what could a pretty girl like her be hiding from?
He glanced over at his granddaughter. She was pale, Horace having managed to clean the newborn goo off of her body. She stared up at her father with the most startling green eyes Andrew had ever seen, a dusting of wine red hair atop her tiny head.
After a moment, she reached up and pressed her tiny fingers toward Horace’s malformed cheek and he turned his head, pressing a soft kiss to her little palm, still careful in his movements, fully aware of his abnormal strength.
After twenty seven years of being able to bench press mini vans, he had gotten used to having to actively concentrate to keep from harming anyone.
“She’s not ugly,” his voice always had a deep timber to it, almost like an echo. “Like me.”
Ellie’s face darkened as she heard his words. It was at moments like this that Andrew saw something not so innocent behind those doe eyes of hers. Something hidden.
Something dangerous.
“You are not ugly, Horace.”
She said it with so much sincerity and finality that Horace almost believed it. Despite people thinking he was dumb, he knew from two years with Ellie that love tended to blind people to your flaws. Ellie did not see his deformities because she loved him. Deformities his own mother could not look past.
Horace inhaled sharply through his teeth as pain, hard and fast, struck his finger, a harsh snap startling everyone in the room, including the small child in his arms, who was staring in shock at the bent finger in her tiny grasp.
Within seconds, her small face scrunched up and she began to wail. Horace looked panicked and Ellie reached up for the child, taking her gently.
“Shhh, solnyshka,” she soothed, shocking both men with a clearly Russian accent. “You didn’t mean to hurt your daddy.”
Ellie gently nudged her daughter to her chest, a robe concealing her modesty as the tiny child began to nurse.
“Samara.”
She blinked up at Horace, realizing that in all the hustle and bustle of being pregnant and making sure Dana was mentally well enough for her to be away from her for an indeterminate amount of time, she had forgotten to pick out a name for her daughter.
At the thought of Dana, she grew somber. It was odd to look as young as Ellie did and have a twenty two year old daughter. Especially when Ellie was physically twenty two herself. She had been for some time.
"Her name should be Samara."
Ellie nodded, breaking free from her reverie. She shook away the thought of having to leave Horace behind one day and decided to focus on the here and now.
“Our little Samara Rose.”
She pressed her lips gently to Samara’s head, inhaling that aroma that was so uniquely a new baby smell. The smell of the moon and every dream you’ve ever had, her mother described it. At the thought of her mother, she began to sing the lullaby from her childhood. The same one she would always sing to Dana.
undefined
youtube
Horace watched Ellie and Samara as they bonded upon the make-shift bed he and his father had made in the office of the junkyard. It wasn’t perfect. But it was clean, the smell of the hospital grade cleaner he had stolen still stinging his nostrils.
His angel and his little girl.

Vacant Lot
Madison, Ohio
Royce Clayton’s pale blue eyes snapped open as the sound of a baby crying echoed in his ears. An image bloomed in his mind. A tiny pink bundle. Vibrant, almost glowing green eyes, a sprinkling of deep red hair upon a small head.
Thoughts of a girl that had haunted his dreams for years before his death snapped to the forefront of his mind as if they had never faded. Vivid. Colorful. As clear as any film he had ever seen.
The girl that had driven him to the brink of insanity as he had tried to will her into reality in life, turning to dangerous sports for distraction, and developing an anger issue due to her non-existence. The ego, however, had been all his.
How unfair it was that she had been born now and not then. Not when he was alive. Whole. Handsome.
His fists clenched at his sides. Even if he wanted to track her down when she was older - which, given the mental and otherworldly connection they seemed to share, did not seem like it would be a particularly difficult task - he would not be able to bring himself to kill her.
No matter how many years he had been dead, none of his victims had ever been female and he did not plan on breaking that track record.
He let out a snort and closed his eyes again, allowing his consciousness to drift off and connect with hers. Even a baby’s thoughts were better than the boring reality of his endless purgatory.
Tumblr media
A/N: And that’s a wrap for this chapter. I like adding more depth to previously one-dimensional characters. It was implied in his ghost file that Horace was not always insane. He only snapped after his father died.
And honestly, the thought of him with a tiny child just warms my heart in an odd, not so easily described way.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a 2001 American animated science fiction adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 41st Disney animated feature film, and the studio's first science-fiction film, it was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise and produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay written by Tab Murphy, and a story by Trousdale, Wise, Murphy, Joss Whedon, Bryce Zabel, and Jackie Zabel. The film features an ensemble voice cast that includes Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, James Garner, Leonard Nimoy, Don Novello, Phil Morris, Claudia Christian, Jacqueline Obradors, Jim Varney (in his final film role), Florence Stanley, John Mahoney, David Ogden Stiers and Corey Burton. Set in 1914, the film tells the story of young linguist Milo Thatch, who gains possession of a sacred book, which he believes will guide him and a crew of mercenaries to the lost city of Atlantis.
WordGirl (stylized as W✪RD GIRL) is an American children’s flash-animated superhero television series produced by the Soup2Nuts animation unit of Scholastic Entertainment for PBS Kids.[1] The series began as a series of shorts entitled The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl that premiered on PBS Kids Go! on November 10, 2006, usually shown at the end of Maya & Miguel; the segment was then spun off into a new thirty-minute episodic series that premiered on September 3, 2007 on most PBS member stations. The series of shorts consisted of thirty episodes, with 130 episodes in the full half-hour series.
WordGirl creator Dorothea Gillim felt that most children's animation "underestimated [children's] sense of humor" and hoped to create a more intellectual show for young audiences.
The series follows WordGirl, a girl with superpowers whose secret identity is Becky Botsford, student. WordGirl was born on the fictional planet Lexicon (also a term referring to the vocabulary of a language or to a dictionary) but was sent away after sneaking onto a spaceship and sleeping there. Captain Huggy Face, a chimpanzee who was a pilot in the Lexicon Air Force, piloted the ship, but lost control when WordGirl awoke, and crash-landed on Earth (more specifically in Fair City), a planet that affords WordGirl her superpowers, including flight and super strength. WordGirl utilizes these powers to save her adoptive home, using her downed spacecraft as a secret base of operations.[citation needed]
WordGirl was adopted and provided an alter ego by Tim and Sally Botsford, who gave her the name Becky. While in her alter ego, she has a younger brother, TJ, obsessed with WordGirl, but still unknowingly a typical sibling rival to Becky. The Botsford family keeps Captain Huggy Face as a pet, naming him Bob. Becky attends Woodview Elementary School, where she is close friends with Violet Heaslip and the school newspaper reporter Todd “Scoops” Ming.[citation needed]

The Hudsucker Proxy (Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, 1994) Cast: Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Charles Durning, Jim True-Frost, John Mahoney, Bill Cobbs, Bruce Campbell. Screenplay: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen, Sam Raimi. Cinematography: Roger Deakins. Production design: Dennis Gassner. Film editing: Thom Noble. Music: Carter Burwell. Maybe the most divisive of the Coen brothers' movies. It's certified rotten on Rotten Tomatoes at 57%, but even there you'll find reviewers who think it "criminally overlooked and sinfully wonderful" and "A wickedly funny and incisive lampoon of big business." I had avoided it for years, but when I gave in and finally watched it I was occasionally amused and sometimes surprised. What doesn't work for me, however, is its hommage to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and '40s. That sort of thing is rarely worth doing, unless you do it with unabashed affection, as Peter Bogdanovich did in What's Up, Doc? (1972). Bogdanovich wisely took the tropes of classic screwball and updated them. The Coens and co-writer Sam Raimi, however, make the mistake of retaining for their film the period in which screwball flourished, and the contrast of their ersatz screwball with the real thing becomes apparent.

2024 MOVIE LIST
www.tumblr.com/theharpermovieblog
I re-watched The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
Nothing in my life has been more influential than my crush on Jennifer Jason Leigh in this movie. Lol.
After the president of Hudsucker Industries commits suicide, the board fills his position with a perceived imbecile, in a scheme to lower the company's stock price.
Ah, the Coen Brothers. Filmmaking geniuses. Gods of the artcraft. We know em, we love em. But, did you know they were friends with "Evil Dead" director Sam Raimi? Did you know they worked with Raimi on a couple films? Did you know they wrote this film with Sam Raimi? If you're a film nerd, you should.
Written by the Coens and Sam Raimi. Directed by the Coens. Starring Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Charles Durning, Bruce Campbell, John Mahoney, and....PAUL NEWMAN! This film is a talent buffet. A bevy of likeable actors. Genius level dudes behind the lens. Even if you don't like this movie, you have to admit, it's pretty impressive.
So, how does it stack up? Well, in the Coen's catalogue it ranks a little low for me. Which l, to be clear, isn't an insult to the film, seeing as the Coen's filmography is amazing. It's just....not their best. Some jokes don't land, some moments feel lackluster and some could argue it's a little muddy in its story and pacing.
However, "The Hudsucker Proxy" is a solid and enjoyable film. It's more lighthearted feeling than most Coen comedies, but it retains their quirkiness and habits of meticulous directing and editing. It's got an underdog vibe that sells it well. It has gorgeous visuals and really makes you feel good when all is said and done. But, most of all, it's a beautiful homage to old time Hollywood films.
Whether it be a classic style of presenting romance, the fast talking dialogue, the touches of scene construction, the music, the "It's a wonderful life"-esque ending. It is all one big and beautiful silver-screen classic filtered through the minds of the Coens. What they did with Noir and "Miller's Crossing" they do here with 40's and 50's romantic comedy.
It's not the best Coen Brother's movie, but it's still a Coen Brother's movie, which really does a great job of making you feel good without getting too sappy.
