What kind of nu metal music fits Les's band?

First of all I gotta clarify that I sent this ask myself because I accidentally lost the original through constant editing and drafting. I realize I could just make a regular text post but I'm quirky like that, and a question is a nice little attention grabber for those who are interested.

Anyway...

It's hard to point at one song and say this is their sound, because A: I'm picky, B: the band's style changes over time, and C: I don't know what I'm doing lmao

This answer is very long uhh I don't seem to be able to form short responses, mi scusi 😅

Back at home the brothers' music and then also the first year on the road with Flea the band sounds like the albums Music and especially Grassroots by 311. (Grassroots is such a banger of an album, I listen to it all the time, really recommend.)

Hed's the main influence on the band's sound because he's the main vocalist, songwriter and overall the most invested in the band succeeding (Les's main concern is making ends meet, and Flea is just enjoying the ride lol). At the start Hed and Les have had basically no contact with Rock Trolls so even though they're both more metal/punk than regular rock, their "rock side" is softer at this point. Hed also grew up with hip hop because of his peers so there's a lot of rapping in his lyrics. And he also incorporates reggae into his style a lot because of his favorite uncle, Kymani (one of the guys who live with Ish) who is a Reggae Troll. Hed is pretty much a sponge when it comes to music, much like Floyd. The closest I can come to describing his genre is a fusion of Rap Metal and Reggae Rock which are both already fusion genres jskksdjsk

(The band 311 has two singers and oddly they both sound like Hed and Les to me. SA Martinez (the higher of the two voices) sounds 100%, exactly like how I've imagined Hed's voice in my head. For Les I have a different voice claim because Les's personal style of music is much different from the band, but Nick Hexum (the lead vocalist here) is still in the second place when it comes to voice alone. Imagine my enthusiastic surprise finding voices for both brothers in the same band 😄)

While driving around and performing small gigs they come in contact with the alternative and nu metal scene and meet a lot of Rock Trolls (mostly various Metal Trolls) and other mixed trolls, and in the following couple of years their sound gradually becomes heavier (Hed rediscovers screamo lol) and they go from rock to metal.

A year into their "touring" is also around the time Hed meets and starts dating Liv and gets her to join the band. Liv's genre has the heaviest sound of all of them (Industrial/EBM), which influences Hed and the band too. And with Liv on the drums, Hed takes over DJ-ing and is also able to put more focus on the vocals, which also makes Les step down and only sing backing vocals with the rest of the band if needed.

The band in this era sounds like the album Revolution by Insolence and to some degree Introduction to Mayhem by Primer 55.

Two years into the bands existence is when Floyd runs into them. At first he's more just standing there, observing their practices and performances warily, because he's had bad experiences with Rock Trolls in his one year alone and metal music still kinda freaks him out at this point. But he soon starts joining in in melodic parts and then it progresses into him singing longer and longer segments because he has the strongest vocals of everyone. And once he saves enough of his earnings for a guitar he starts playing the rhythm guitar too. (The guitar he took with him when he left the Troll Tree got stolen before he met the band.)

I guess I should clarify: Flea is the lead guitarist, Les is the bassist, and Liv and Hed switch on the drums and DJ-ing depending on the track. At one point they also get a keyboard.

It's also not that long before Hed and Floyd start actively writing songs together, sharing each others notes, and they start to split the singing parts more evenly. Hed even teaches Floyd screamo techniques, because he thinks Floyd has a great voice for them (He is correct, Floyd has a mean scream 😁).

During this time the band still pretty much sounds like Revolution by Insolence but with more melodic singing parts from Floyd (and screaming/shouting lmao). I think Verge of Umbra is another good band to compare, it sounds more clean and Floydy but still Hedy. (Man, I should write scientific research papers skjdkjf)

From here on out I'm a bit unsure how the band's sound develops, but I'm pretty sure Floyd would unintentionally infect them with a mild case of radio friendliness (Pop trolls can't help their in your face nature lmao 😞). So for now I'm stopping here...

This took me days of searching and writing so I would appreciate to hear any thoughts you have if you've come this far and given some of the songs a listen. :)

Blue Album (1995)

It happened upon a summer night that my dad handed me the Blue Album. I opened it up and there they were: these alien guys next to a bright Venus disc. I placed the CD gently into my 6-disc carousel and put on my headphones.

The first song on the album is Down - a song I heard previously on the radio and was not really captured by. In its entirety, Down is a fun, high energy song...but then Random played next. Then Loco, All Mixed Up...by the end of the album I thought WTF did I just listen to?!

Like all of 311's albums, the Blue Album is a conflation of styles melded seamlessly together to create the unique 311 sound. It's crunchy funk, rap reggae, groovy alternative reggae, heavy-guitar-dancehall, and something else. The album was actually recorded in haste - they were just beginning to blow up and had an obligation to Capricorn to record this, so the Blue Album has a unique short-and-sweet vibe compared to their other albums. Some songs are mainstays in their concert setlists, while others are deep track gems.

that’s not dessert though. the real dessert comes after cuddling on the couch and soaking in the praises that fall from your lips between kisses until your lips are swollen and sheened with saliva. every year, he takes your hand and leads you to his bedroom, where he forces you to close your eyes upon stepping through the door way. you can’t know where his hiding space is. you’re too curious and would end up investigating it in secret later on.

this persists for a while, your gushing and prattling over the platform boots, warm and perfect for the winter. it’s all a routine part of the night, something you’ve expected — not because you knew what gift he was going to get you, but because he always gets you material gift before and something a little more after.

the after is what you both know you’re really looking forward to, after all the events that slowly passed throughout the night.

any dave music hcs? :) my playlist for him mostly consists of relatively popular rock music. besides wacky but awesome garageband beats, i personally think he’d be a rocknroll radio hits kinda guy, at least for pre-sburb dave, i don’t think he’d have as much freedom to really explore music the way he wants before then. some of my favorites for him are all mixed up (311), superman’s dead (our lady six), bound for the floor (local H), everything to everyone (everclear), inside out (eve 6) and birds (butthole surfers). i also think he’d like metal too! particularly nu metal. even if mixing music and rapping is an outlet for him, i see him relating to these types of songs a lot and maybe at the time when his #ironiccoolguy persona is most prevalent + affecting his interests/personality heavily, he’s embarrassed about admitting his popular favorites b/c it’s not cool to him to like what’s mainstream. but you know character arc! and besides when the earth explodes no music is really popular anymore LOL. btw i liked your davejade music posts ^_^ so i’m very curious if you have any thoughts for dave music on his own!

one of the first things we know about dave is “You like to rave about BANDS NO ONE'S EVER HEARD OF BUT YOU” but its never brought up again. so i can see him having a bit of a punky existence. but its pretty impossible to list bands that people havent heard about but him. it doesnt mean he can’t like known acts. pink floyd are one of the most well known music artists of all time but i think he would like it for instance

but of those known acts i know his ass does not listen to fallout boy or whatever

idk dave he strikes me as someone who listens to both brian eno and death grips but at the same time theres a lot of stuff i CANT see him listening to

i think he probably likes beastie boys. paul’s boutique (1989) is probably one of his top albums. deltron 3030 (2000) too. both experimental hiphop, paul’s boutique utilizing plunderphonics while deltron 3030 is a bit more epic and psychedelic.

i think both wouldve changed his life. paul’s boutique for for his pragmatic bent (sampling)

and deltron 3030 on the psychological / reflection / journey / listen and close your eyes rock opera side (“It is a rap opera concept album set in a dystopian year 3030. nmesh dream sequins is another album i can see him listen to, the cream of the crop for experimental vaporwave (the type of slowing samples in vaporwave was a technique pioneered by dj screw who i think dave would also dig, as it essentially manipulates time and thats Cool). probably likes oneohtrix point never too, an experimental electronic artist who also took inspiration from screw

maybe a bit of biting tongues, one of my favorites. he couldve been led to it going down the eno hole. probably his favorite album being recharge (1989)

as for rock i’m pretty sure dave strikes me as a psychedelic / experimental rock type of dude. so yeah pink floyd is still on the table especially early with syd barrett (the piper at the gates of dawn (1967) and a saucer full of secrets (1968)). but i think he can like later after that (of COURSE he feels drawn to the song ‘time’ lol i bet he’d want to replicate the atmosphere of the song’s beginning in his own stuff). he likes this kinda sound. he i can definitely see him being a ween fan for sure, especially quebec (2003) or their satire art/prog rock album the mollusk (1997) —the latter of which i could see him bonding with jade over DEFINITELY just listen to the titular song — but really the whole discography. or a zappa fan. maybe a dip into metal if its experimental or funky like primus or zillatron (bootsy collins alias)

i have to mention that these are all bands i like to some degree because to know what they sound like and if they fit dave ive had to listen to them lol. but yeah so that could put some bias into it and theres surely more stuff he would listen to i dont know but heres a portion of what i see from where i am

Masterlist

Steve thought it was impossible to be taunted by a cake. It wasn’t even whole, just a slice. The rest had been eaten a year ago at the wedding.

The wedding that took place just four months before Corroded Coffin finished their sophomore album, and the last minute track “Honeymoon” took to the alternative radio waves and peaked at number 4. A full six months of rehearsal, contracts, and expedited passports led them here: Eddie on a stage in Canada before the sun went down and Steve, alone in their kitchen on their first anniversary.

The saran wrap had a web of ice around it, mimicking the veil on the plastic cake toppers Steve ordered for the big day. He had bought two, cracked them in half, and burned off his fingerprints when he hot glued to the two grooms together.

Steve knew the cake was melting quickly, so he peeked under the stiff covering just for a moment before putting the slice of cake back in the freezer, not too far in the back that it would get freezer burn, but nowhere near the danger zone of pizzas and chicken nuggets he and his husband still navigated towards when they were drunk.

His husband; who was trying his best not to cry as he slipped his wedding band back on his finger after he came off stage.

“And there is why Utopia is album of the year” Jobe spoke to his girlfriend Malia, who was seated on the floor, brushing her hair in front of the mirror.

He had gave her a whole lecture since they debated music together. During a few seconds of his speech, she had thought of a new way to bother him.

“Did you just prepare a whole discourse, my bro?” Malia asked, making sure to emphasize that ‘brother’ word.

“Cause you always try to downplay Trav”

“I don’t even care about your opinion, man”

Now, his attention has been raised by the way Malia called him. Even though, she wasn’t big on pet names, she would still have a nickname for him. But never the friendly names.

“Now why would you call me that, Lia” He tilted his head giving her a ‘stop playing with me face as she tried to contain her laugh. Her plan went on perfectly.

“It was never that deep, low it big man”

As she played as if she didn’t care, he, on the other side, did care.

“It’s babe to you”

“Whatever bro” Malia rolled her eyes giving her best expression of ignorance.

I should be an actress She thought for a minute before going back to bothering her lover.

“Nah not bro, babe”

“Bro” She teased knowing he’ll be as annoyed as it could be.

“Babeeee” He dragged, mouthing it for her to repeat as if he was teaching it to a child.

“Brooooo”

Jobe just gave her an annoyed face, looking her straight in the eyes As much as she tried, his stare just made Malia burst out laughing. He instantly understood what you had just did as a smirk grew on his face.

“Stop playing with me, man”

“It’s babe to you” Malia stole his sentence from earlier causing Jobe to roll his eyes.

Towel

Harry walked through the house to the veranda behind it  in search of his godfather. He found him spreading out a towel on the strip of beach below the veranda. 

“Good to see you, kid,” Sirius said, hugging Harry and looking him over as he always did. 

“You too,” Harry said, sitting down on the towel, facing Sirius. Since the war ended and his pardon, Sirius looked more like the man in the album Hagrid had given him and less like the fugitive he met when he was 13. “What’s up?”

Sirius lounged on the large towel, taking his time before answering Harry. Then he took a box out of his pocket. Harry looked at it curiously. It was plain, except for the Black family crest emblazoned on the top.

“Every son of the house of Black got one of these when he was born,” Sirius said. 

Harry raised his eyebrow. He knew the stories about the Blacks that Sirius and Andromeda had told him. Sirius opened it to reveal a ring. 

Harry looked at it curiously. It was wide with what he recognized as runes etched on the sides, and Canis Major in the middle. He looked back at Sirius. “It’s for Remus?”

“I wasn’t sure if the magic was going to work the way my family intended it to…to transform into the perfect ring for the person it was intended for…but apparently the magic never stipulated that the ring be given to a woman,” Sirius said, winking at Harry. 

“So you’re proposing, then?” Harry asked.”Make an honest man out of him?”

Sirius blinked at him for a moment and Harry realized he must have done something that reminded Sirius of his father. “Something like that,” Sirius said, putting the box back in his pocket. “You’ll be best man?”

Harry’s face cracked into a wide grin. “I would be honored.”

Summer Sonic 2000 Headline [ROCKIN'ON June 2000]

Y2K breaks out! The first ROCKIN'ON report on the midsummer alternative festival Summer Sonic! Finally, Japan's first urban festival. First of all, fly with the line-up!

On 5th and 6th August, immediately after the Fuji Rock Festival, the two-day rock festival "Summer Sonic" will be held simultaneously at Fujikyu Highland Conifer Forest in the Kanto region and Osaka Cosmosquare Open Air Stadium in the Kansai region. The number of artists is expected to be considerable, as the festival will be held over two days and on two stages. The names are still coming in, but for now the confirmed artists include Green Day, Mansun, The Flaming Lips, Teenage Fanclub, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Muse, Weezer, Arrested Development, Ben Folds Five, Coldplay, Grandaddy, The Living End, Tahiti 80, Vienna, 311, Supercar, Quruli, and more! —So it's already gorgeous! The artists are completely interchangeable between the Kanto and Kansai regions, so all bands will be appearing in both. Don't worry.

Now, let's take a personal look at each of the highlights, starting with Weezer. I thought they had broken up, but it seems they are really coming. What's going on? I've checked many times, but seriously, they're coming. And Mansun! The new album is coming out in June, so it should be unusually exciting by this time. Shout out "I'm negative!" to the sound of high-speed dominoes falling all over the place! And for those who missed their first visit to Japan, is the longed-for Muse going to be the favourite? Green Day, who played in the basement of Seiyu [a convenience store] in Takadanobaba after being cancelled at the first Fuji Rock show, have not played since their last shows at Tokyo Bay NK Hall and Akasaka BLITZ [in 1998]. What colour is your hair? Or, has there been a new album to follow "Nimrod" yet? Jon Spencer, who is a familiar face is sure to impress. And for Teenage Fanclub, the long-awaited new album is in the works. They'll be playing new songs! The Flaming Lips under a summer sky, is it Reading Fest all over again? A Bowlie Weekender illusion? Check out Grandaddy, and I could go on and on, but this is a groundbreaking line-up. I know my wallet (or bank account) will be tight at Fuji, but I have no choice but to say "I've got to go".

This festival is an urban festival. It is an attempt to present a different kind of festival in Japan, where people can experience world-class rock artists on stage in a convenient location in a casual and comfortable manner, rather than the green, free and hard-working rock festival that Fuji Rock so strongly impressed upon people. This is the same direction as Reading in the UK and Big Day Out in Australia. In a sense, it could be said to be competing with Fuji. It's hard to decide which one to go to, and if you go to both, it's hard to find the money and time, but it's good to think about the future of festivals in Japan. We can target festivals too, and if we do, they will become better and better. …… As I was writing this, I was stunned to see the new line-up for Fuji Rock announced today! In addition to Morrissey and Denki Groove, Mogwai! Yo La Tengo, Super Furry Animals and more! This is a battle as early as the subject……. Find out more with your own eyes! That's all I can say. Translator's Note: There's actually at least 3 different accounts on what happened with Green Day when the first Fuji Rock Festival was cancelled back in 1997.

As claimed in the article, they played an impromptu show at the basement of a Seiyu convenience store in Takadanobaba.

According to Wikipedia JP, the band were upset and trashed the hotel room that they were staying at with a BB gun/air gun.

According Green Day Live, the band joined members of the Chili Peppers, the Foo Fighters, Beck, and The Prodigy on an excursion to an amusement park. It was likely to be Fuji-Q Highland, since it was close to the resort and only half an hour away by car.

So yeah, make of it what you will.

Believe it or not, I happen to come across this article by chance from amongst the secondhand Japanese music magazines that I have in my collection. It came from one of the magazines that I was forced to buy as part of a bulk purchase and it had none of the artists or bands that I was interested in, so I put it away. It wasn't until a couple of days while I was sifting through the collection that I found this article.
