#TIKTOK DOWNLOAD DATA FOR ANDROID#
#TIKTOK DOWNLOAD DATA DOWNLOAD#
TikTok vs TikTok Lite: What's Best for You? TikTok (previously known as Musical.ly) is one of the massively growing social media apps out there, and it's easy to see why.
Here are a few privacy and security tips for TikTok users that you should check out right now. Next up: Worried about the privacy and security of your data on TikTok? You should be. If you know any other TikTok tips and tricks, share them in the comments section below. A better experience while using your favorite app. You are not going to lose your profile or associated data, but doing so will only improve your user experience. It is a good idea to clear cache files and data from time to time. The more you use the app, the more it will consume storage space and slow down your phone and TikTok app itself. There are plenty of cool accounts that teach you new stuff and keep you entertained. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing good about it. Like all social media apps, it suffers from privacy and security issues and has its fair share of scandals and scams. TikTok has taken the world by storm, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
#TIKTOK DOWNLOAD DATA FOR ANDROID#
Open the app and repeat the same process as you did above for Android to clear TikTok cache on your iPhone or iPad. It’s a good thing the TikTok app offers this option. You can’t delete TikTok or any other app’s cache and data from iOS settings. IOS is known for many things, and being flexible and open is not one of them. You can choose which data to delete, unlike the Android Settings options, where everything is deleted. As the app notes, Downloads includes filters, stickers, effects, and other data. Step 2: You can clear Cache and Downloads. Step 1: Launch the app and tap on Me tab at the bottom of the screen to select the three-dot menu icon. You can clear the TikTok app cache from the official app itself, which gives you more control. I tried it and the app asked me to sign in to my account, as you will notice in the screenshots below. Step 2: Tap on Clear data at the bottom of the screen to select Clear cache and Clear all data. It will depend on the make and model of your smartphone. Step 1: Open phone Settings and find TikTok under Manage apps or wherever apps are listed on your phone. Everything is in the cloud and the app downloads parts of it back to your smartphone again to speed up content delivery and improve performance.Ĭache footprint will be really small in the beginning and will continue to build up over time, just like last time before you cleared it. That information rests on TikTok’s servers. All your data including profile details and history are safe. Neither will it delete your comments or comments that people left on your videos. That said, TikTok won’t delete the videos that you uploaded or liked. That will take some time, a few moments, and you should see your profile again. When you sign in to TikTok again, the app downloads a fresh copy of cache. Purging cache removes your login details and your profile. You will begin from scratch, that means you may have to sign in again. That’s unless you delete the TikTok cache and open the app again. The caching process takes place in the background and you don’t even notice the difference. That said, TikTok is not saving the video itself but certain details about the video.Ĭlearing cache files can improve performance, increase storage, and solve common errors that most users face while using an app. The TikTok app stores your TikTok profile details, app settings, details about videos you watched/uploaded to the platform, viewing history, filters, effects, liked videos, and so on.
#TIKTOK DOWNLOAD DATA DOWNLOAD#
It consumes less mobile data since TikTok has to download only specific type of data (new content updates) instead of everything. Instead of downloading everything from the web every time you use it, apps like TikTok dig into the cache files stored on your smartphone to perform basic, repeated functions quickly and easily.ĭoing so has other merits. All apps store cache files on the phone so that whenever you open that app, it feels as fast as it was the first time you used it.

Obligatory disclaimer that I don't think this is gospel or that the complaints aren't valid bc they are and I will probably continue to complain myself, this is just me spitting into the void a few minutes after waking up while I wait for my coffee to be done. But. I sometimes suspect that a lot of people who complain about the quality of cultural media these days, e.g. movies and books etc, need to just like. Learn how to find the good shit. Is the sequel-and-rebootification bad for film culture as a whole? Yes obviously. Is the tiktokization of a lot of pop music bad for music culture as a whole? Obviously yes. However. Have you considered watching/listening to/reading something that wasn't written in a year starting with a 20? Has it occurred to you that maybe ""booktok"" is not only whatever the first person you see when you search #booktok on the app says? And that there are many people talking about all kind of excellent new releases that show there are plenty of books with literary merit still being written? Published even?
Perfectly valid complaint to be angry about the way arts and media have devolved into Content but I also think some of you are just bad at finding new stuff so you keep reconsuming the same things over and over and talking about how nothing meaningful has ever been made in the last decade.
#disgruntled octopus#maybe this is the anarchist in me but i find it frustrating to only see criticisms with no effort being put in#to build up artists who ARE trying to combat the problem#or at the very least explore the past instead of relying solely on new releases that you can see in theaters/concert/etc#this is not abt mutuals or anyone btw like this was inspired by multiple things but mostly just my lil brain first thing in the morning#and the episode of Teacup Demagogues i was listening to#TD is hosted by a tiktoker i like who recommends 'new music for old heads' and she was talking abt this exact phenomenon#ppl in her comments will be like 'no good music is made anymore' and then her whole channel is just abt sharing new(er) releases#that are likely to be enjoyed by people who like old(er) music#like. her channel is right there. you're commenting on it. there is good shit being put out you just ignore it or dont try to find it#''''everything is so commercial and soulless these days 😤😤😤''''#meanwhile they refuse to seek out anyone with less than 100k monthly listeners on spotify#or read self-pub or indie press books#or watch people's passion projects on youtube#nevermind shit being released by small indie studios#''''games are just data farming flashes in the pan made by artistic sweatshops'''' but they wont download a single indie game on steam#like. again. valid complaint overall and i am going to say that shit myself at times.#but. very frustrating counterphenomena

So apparently KOSA (2024 edition) is getting either thrown out until next year or put into effect in six days. That was a guesstimate based on a different person saying that's when Congress is back in session and may be false.
Update that's going in the main post at the top: it has enough support to pass Congress.
It failed the last two times because people were voting against it.
This time, KOSA has traction among the pro-LGBTQ parties. Because nobody is fucking calling their bullshit and screaming from the rooftops that calling it the "Kids Online Safety Act" is misleading.
What will it passing do?
Nothing much, only prevent any education on LGBTQIA+ (it's that stupid fucking argument about us grooming kids again), shut down nearly every fandom space on the internet, and make it required for most big tech companies to have your ID.
Want to have resources for kids to discover their identity readily available? Yes? Then fucking speak up against this stupid fucking bill.
Fandom spaces like Tumblr, Twitter (? I thought the MAGA assholes liked Musk?), Tiktok, Archive Of Our Own, and any other website that hosts fanfic or fanart? Either shut down permanently, forced to uproot to a different country and down for a while (best case scenario, and they likely won't be able to send any data, and therefore fanfics, to the US), or gutted so that you only get to put G rated cishet ships on there, if any shipping at all. How to avoid that? I've already said it: Call your fucking representatives.
Want to avoid the fucking dystopic task of being legally obligated to give big tech your government issue ID? Again, cause an uproar. Call your goddamned representatives.
If they can pass this, the ripple effects could be catastrophic.
So, for fuck's sake, any Americans that can impact this stupid fucking bill and see this? Do everything in your power to shut it down because you have until February twenty sixth (26th) to send this bill back to where it belongs.
And if you can't do that? Reblog, copy my tags, and boost the signal.
Sorry not sorry for ranting, making you scroll through that, and swearing a probably excessive amount, but KOSA is a bill with a GLOBAL IMPACT being passed by ONE COUNTRY because some old people are scared of two guys with who were told they were girls kissing within five hundred miles of a child. Fuck this shit, I shouldn't have to worry about bad bills in America but I fucking do because I use the internet and would like to avoid mass censorship. Fuck this, fuck conservatives, and fuck the fact that some boomers make your country's policies.
Now, if you won't mind me, I'm going to be up until three in the morning downloading fanfiction or copying and pasting them into a a text file if I can't so I can read them by the end of the week.

🎨 Pixel Art Beginner Guide
Hello, I'm Tofu, a pixel artist based in England. I work full-time doing pixel illustrations or game-art. I started learning in my early 20s, so no it's not too late for you!
I run a 7k+ member Discord server called Cafe Dot, where we host events like gesture drawing and portrait club.
I currently have Good Omens brainrot so expect some fanart on this blog. I also occasionally do/reblog horror art so be mindful of that!
Due to so much AI nonsense on every platform, all my public work will be filtered/edited with anti-AI scraping techniques. Supporters on my Ko-Fi can see unfiltered work and also download it.
Want to learn how to do pixel art? Check my tutorial tag!

❔FAQ
What app do you use? I use Aseprite on PC and occasionally Pixquare on iOS (use code tofu for 30% off Pixquare!! <3) Free alternative: Libresprite on PC
Why does your art look so crunchy / compressed? Glaze
How did you learn pixel art? I first started out watching MortMort and making tiny sprites. Then once I started getting interested in landscapes/environment art, I did many, many Studio Ghibli studies.
How can I also protect my art? You can use Glaze and Nightshade- Glaze protects against Img2Img style copying, and Nightshade poisons the data so the AI thinks it's the opposite of what it actually is. There is a lot of misinformation going around (likely from pro-AI groups) so do your own research too! If you're a pixel artist you can also tilt or blur your art after upscaling, which will make it near useless to AI models (or regular thieves) once downscaled again.
Feel free to send me an ask if there's anything you want to know! I am always happy to help beginners :--3

Edit: the app launched and Is down- I have the initial apology video in a post here and I’m working on getting a full archive of their TikTok up ASAP. I’m letting the rest of this post remain since I do still stand by most of it and also don’t like altering things already in circulation.
Warning for criticism and what I’d consider some harsh to outright mean words:
So I’ve just been made aware of the project known of as ‘lore.fm’ and I’m not a fan for multiple reasons. For one this ‘accessibility’ tool complicates the process of essentially just using a screen reader (something native to all I phones specifically because this is a proposed IOS app) in utterly needless and inaccessible ways. From what I have been seeing on Reddit they have been shielding themselves (or fans of the project have been defending them) with this claim of being an accessibility tool as well to which is infuriating for so many reasons.
I plan to make a longer post explaining why this is a terrible idea later but I’ll keep it short for tonight with my main three criticisms and a few extras:
1. Your service requires people to copy a url for a fic then open your app then paste it into your app and click a button then wait for your audio to be prepared to use. This is needlessly complicating a process that exists on IOS already and can be done IN BROWSER using an overlay that you can fully control the placement of.
2. This is potentially killing your own fandom if it catches on with the proposed target market of xreader smut enjoyers because of only needing the link as mentioned above. You don’t have to open a fic to get a link this the author may potentially not even get any hits much less any other feedback. At least when you download a pdf you leave a hit: the download button is on the page with the fic for a reason. Fandom is a self sustaining eco system and many authors get discouraged and post less/even stop writing all together if they get low interaction.
3. Maybe we shouldn’t put something marketed as turning smut fanfic into audio books on the IOS App Store right now. Maybe with KOSA that’s a bad idea? Just maybe? Sarcasm aside we could see fan fiction be under even more legal threat if minors use this to listen to the content we know they all consume via sites like ao3 (even if we ask them not to) and are caught with it. Auditory content has historically been considered much more obscene/inappropriate than written content: this is a recipe for a disaster and more internet regulations we are trying to avoid.
I also have many issues with the fact that this is obviously redistributing fanfiction (thus violating the copyright we hold over our words and our plots) and removing control the author should have over their content and digital footprint. Then there is the fact that even though the creator on TikTok SAYS you can email to have your fic ‘excluded’ based on the way the demo works (pasting a link) I’m gonna assume that’s just to cover her ass/is utter bullshit. I know that’s harsh but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it’s probably a duck.
I am all for women in stem- I’ve BEEN a woman in Stem- but this is not a cool girl boss moment. This is someone naive enough to think this will go over well at best or many other things (security risks especially) at worst.
In conclusion for tonight: I hope this person is a troll but there is enough hype and enough paid for web domains that I don’t think that’s the case. There are a litany of reasons every fanfic reader and writer should be against something like this existing and I’ll outline them all in several other posts later.
Do not email their opt out email address there is no saying what is actually happening with that data and it is simply not worth the risks it could bring up. I hate treating seemingly well meaning people like potential cyber criminals but I’ve seen enough shit by now that it’s better to be safe than sorry. You’re much safer just locking all your fics to account only. I haven’t yet but I may in the future if that is the only option.
If anyone wants a screen reader tutorial and a walk through of my free favorites as well as the native IOS screen reader I can post that later as well. Sorry for the heavy content I know it’s not my normal fare.

From Myspace to Spotify: The Journey of Indie Sleaze Music in the Digital Age 🌐
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey there, indie dreamer! 🎸 Ready for a nostalgic trip through the evolution of indie sleaze music? From the early days of Myspace to the modern streaming era on Spotify, indie sleaze has undergone a wild transformation. Let's dive into how this raw, rebellious genre has adapted and thrived in the digital age, and why it’s still resonating with listeners today.
1. The Myspace Era: Indie Sleaze’s First Digital Playground
Back in the early 2000s, Myspace was the epicenter of indie music discovery. It was the place where bands could upload their tracks, connect with fans, and build a following without needing a major label. Indie sleaze artists were quick to embrace this new digital frontier, using Myspace as their stage and connecting with a global audience in ways that had never been possible before.
DIY Spirit: Myspace was a haven for the DIY ethos that indie sleaze embraced. Bands like The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Arctic Monkeys used the platform to share their music directly with fans, bypassing traditional media and labels. Their raw, unpolished sound fit perfectly with the unfiltered vibe of Myspace.
Visual Aesthetic: Bands and fans alike used Myspace’s customizable profiles to express their indie sleaze style. With an abundance of glittery backgrounds, band posters, and those iconic “Top 8” friend lists, the platform was a digital reflection of the era’s grungy, glamorous aesthetic.
2. From Downloads to Streams: The Shift to Digital Platforms
As the digital music landscape evolved, so did indie sleaze. The rise of platforms like iTunes and, later, streaming services like Spotify changed the way music was consumed and shared. This transition brought new opportunities and challenges for indie sleaze artists.
Digital Downloads: Platforms like iTunes allowed fans to buy and download individual tracks, making it easier for indie sleaze bands to reach new audiences. Artists could release singles and EPs without needing a full album, and fans could curate their own playlists of their favorite tracks.
Streaming Services: Enter Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms. The shift from downloads to streaming changed everything. Indie sleaze bands had to adapt to a world where music was less about owning tracks and more about playlist placement and algorithmic recommendations.
3. The Rise of Playlists and Algorithmic Discovery
One of the biggest changes in the music industry over the past decade has been the rise of playlists and algorithmic discovery. For indie sleaze artists, this new way of reaching listeners has both benefits and challenges.
Playlist Power: Playlists like Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” and “Release Radar” have become crucial for indie artists. Getting featured on a popular playlist can lead to a surge in streams and new fans. Indie sleaze tracks with their catchy hooks and raw energy often find a perfect home on these curated lists.
Algorithmic Challenges: While algorithms help discover new music, they also mean that artists need to navigate an ever-changing digital landscape. Standing out in a crowded field requires savvy marketing, consistent releases, and a strong online presence. Indie sleaze bands are learning to leverage social media and streaming data to connect with listeners and build their brand.
4. The Influence of Social Media: TikTok and Beyond
The rise of social media platforms like TikTok has brought a whole new dimension to music discovery. For indie sleaze, TikTok’s short-form video format and viral trends have become a new way to connect with fans and introduce their music to a wider audience.
Viral Hits: TikTok has the power to turn obscure indie tracks into viral sensations. Songs that capture the spirit of indie sleaze—whether through their raw lyrics, catchy beats, or nostalgic vibes—are finding new life on the platform. Creators use these tracks in videos, dance challenges, and memes, leading to a resurgence of interest in the genre.
Fan Engagement: Social media allows artists to interact directly with their fans, building a community around their music. Indie sleaze bands are using platforms like Instagram and Twitter to share behind-the-scenes content, engage with fans, and keep their audience updated on new releases.
5. The Revival of Indie Sleaze: A New Generation Embraces the Sound
Despite the changes in how music is consumed, indie sleaze is experiencing a revival. A new generation is discovering and embracing the genre, inspired by the nostalgia of the early 2000s and the raw, unfiltered energy that indie sleaze represents.
Nostalgic Resurgence: The early 2000s sound is making a comeback, with both new and old artists embracing the grunge pop aesthetic. The rise of vintage-inspired fashion and music is bringing indie sleaze back into the spotlight, with playlists and radio stations dedicated to the genre.
Cultural Impact: Indie sleaze’s influence is seen in modern fashion, film, and art. The grungy, carefree style of the early 2000s is being reinterpreted for today’s audience, blending nostalgia with contemporary creativity.
Final Thoughts, Babe: The Journey Continues
From the DIY spirit of Myspace to the streaming era of Spotify and the viral world of TikTok, indie sleaze has navigated a complex and ever-changing digital landscape. Despite the challenges, the genre remains as vibrant and relevant as ever, resonating with both old fans and a new generation discovering its raw, rebellious charm.
So next time you’re curating your playlist or scrolling through social media, remember the journey indie sleaze has taken to get here. Whether you’re rediscovering the classics or finding new favorites, the spirit of indie sleaze lives on—gritty, glamorous, and forever cool. 🎶✨

hello friend! I found this video and would love to know how Eddie, as the “poster adult for undiagnosed ADHD,” would react.
I feel like Steve would be the one to find it; Eddie’s videos are definitely tailored to his liking (good luck figuring out what the fuck that is), while Steve’s are more centered around psychology. And also funny animals. So I feel like Steve would find it, watch it, and thrust his phone at Eddie with no explanation.
thoughts?
lollll yeah the algorithms of older adults are so fascinating to me. my mom’s tiktok feed is exclusively cat videos and truly nothing else. idk how she did it.
i’m testing my abysmal memory here but i think i’ve said before that steve is very much anti-social media (it’s really that he’s anti-mysterious entities having access to his personal data, which is leftover trauma from his Hawkins days, but he’s chosen to attach that to social media), so I don’t think he’d have an Instagram or FB or anything like that (tho I can see him begrudgingly downloading TikTok to keep an eye on Hazel’s account).
Eddie, on the other hand, is a total disaster and so are his algorithms. He will watch anything. He will especially watch random sensory shit for hours upon hours (or until Steve wrenches his phone out of his hand because it’s time for bed).
Also, somewhat off-topic but I totally see Eddie falling victim to those videos where it’s like slime or something on one side and a repost on the other, and Hazel has to be like, “Dad, please stop watching stolen content.”

[tumblr] update timeline for the future
november 2023: videos can no longer be paused. this is to make new users from tiktok more welcome!
february 2024: new users are automatically moved to the "for you" tab. this cannot be changed. being mean to the staff is a bannable offense
april 2024: APRIL FOOLS! we have incorporated unreality into the website for the day and you can now buy "Blorbo" merch. likes are always public
september 2024: we are rolling out compressed reblogs to everyone immediately. there is no toggle and labs has been scrapped with all features from that removed.
january 2025: to continue using tumblr you must create a tumblr live account and if you do not do this within five weeks your account will be deactivated
june 2025: happy pride! it is now a bannable offense to say "transgender" on our website
2026: since nobody is using the following dashboard anymore we are deleting that and replacing it with Tumblr BeepBoop, a new interactive idle game that uses your data as an in game currency!
2027: posts will only exist for a year because we are running out of storage space. "Heritage Post" blogs will be reported to police, as will trans people. to report an open white supremacist you must write a five page essay now
2028: anyone else feeling that nostalgia for ten years ago? staff is too! thats why we are banning any and all forms of sexual content just like the good old days!
2030: we have made likes visible on the dashboard and reblogs will have to be opened in a new tab. on mobile you must download a new app for this
2032: we have removed reblogs, since nobody was using them anyways. The ability to "post" will also be removed
2033: well, it looks like nobody is using our beloved hellsite tumblr anymore so we are shutting down the servers. goodbye everyone!

What the recent Parrot Analytics numbers mean
Parrot Analytics wants to measure "Audience Demand". This is not simple streaming numbers, but it is an indicator made up from hundreds of weighted measurements, all smooshed together: streaming numbers, but also fan and critics ratings, download activities, wiki pages, social media buzz - any kind of dataset they can get their hands on.
The metrics are weighted according to how much effort/time they demand - active consumption and creative participation in content are given a lot of weight, merely clicking a like-button or subscribing to updates comparatively less.
Why do they do all this? Because they want to offer a "globally standardized measurement of audience demand for all markets", making it possible to compare content across platforms. Viewership ratings are dependent on many variables and therefore difficult to interpret out of context. PA promises to "value a piece of content or IP with a precise $ value figure for each title, service and market".
In other words, they try to translate viewership ratings, online chatter, revewies etc. into a number that indicates the net worth of a given show. Having this measurement available to us is incredibly valuable, since this is the very thing execs are interested in.
Takeaways:
Since streaming numbers are an important part of the indicator, it tells us that OFMD must have had good viewership ratings. We don't know how exactly it compares to other shows, but we can use it to refute claims that audiences didn't catch on to the show. Clearly they did.
All our noise matters! Blog posts, reddit discussion threads, Wikipedia engagement, TikToks, search engine activities - it all feeds into this metric! Keep doing it and make sure you keep using the full title Our Flag Means Death as often as possible because chances are PA (and similar analytics sites) will measure it.
Keep watching if you can! Doesn't matter which platform - if you don't want to subscribe to Max any longer, watch it on iPlayer, buy it from Prime Video, whatever works for you. PA even measures P2P downloads, just saying.
Our Flag Means Death is worth a lot of $$$. It has the potential to attract, engage and retain subscribers. That's what every streaming network wants. Our clowning is not baseless. Shout these numbers from the rooftops!

How Parrot Analytics Measures The Value of Content in the Streaming Era
Disclaimer: I am not in any way an expert on any of this. I just read around on Parrot Analytic's website and I have some experience analysing data myself. If anyone has corrections or additional info, please do share!

For anyone who is setting up/moving into a new Samsung phone, mine started to auto-download the TikTok app and thank goodness I saw it and stopped it before that action completed. TikTok is well-known and documented to be horrendously privacy-invasive and its data-collection is not limited to people who sign up and consent to their policies.
https://www.wired.co.uk/article/tiktok-data-privacy https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/19/technology/tiktok-browser-tracking.html https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/aug/24/tiktok-can-track-users-every-tap-as-they-visit-other-sites-through-ios-app-new-research-shows https://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/392312/tiktok-claims-non-users-consent-to-tracking-on-hul.html https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/tiktok-is-making-users-give-their-iphone-passwords-for-unclear-reasons/ar-AA1m7ahi https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/tiktok-privacy-breach-allegations-under-spotlight/ar-AA1m7mOy
Simply put, even using their website puts your privacy at risk. Downloading their app is simply, bottom line, not safe for anyone who is trying to minimize tracking. We should not have devices set to auto-download it, ever.

"Nearly half of the US population uses TikTok. It’s the most downloaded app in the country and the world. And last Wednesday, President Joe Biden signed its ban into law.
Members of Congress backing the anti-TikTok bill from both sides of the aisle have tried to emphasize that it’s 'not a ban' — it’s a forced sale. The 'ban' requires Chinese tech company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, to sell the app to a US-based company within twelve months or the app will be banned in the United States.
ByteDance has responded saying that it will refuse to sell, and that it will instead fight the ban in court. ByteDance believes it can win the court case, based on precedent from federal courts blocking an attempted ban in Montana in November 2023. Former president Donald Trump also tried to ban TikTok twice by executive order when he was in office; those efforts were struck down by the courts too.
Lawmakers are citing data privacy and national security as the primary concerns behind the ban. But others have been more explicit — they are worried about how the app is influencing Americans’ political views, particularly among young voters.
Discussion of the TikTok ban in Congress has been rife with red-baiting and anti-Chinese fearmongering. Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, referred to TikTok as a 'Communist Party propaganda tool.' And Senator Pete Ricketts, a Nebraska Republican, said:
Pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas hashtags are generating fifty times the views on TikTok right now. . . . These videos have more reach than the top ten US news websites combined. This is not a coincidence. The Chinese Communist Party is doing this on purpose.
The senator went on to blame TikTok and the Chinese government for the student protests that started at Columbia University and have since spread to dozens of college campuses across the country on TikTok and the Chinese government.
There is no concrete evidence supporting the idea that political ideas shared on TikTok are more progressive or pro-Palestine than what you find on other platforms or that it skews more progressive than the overall population — with nearly 70 percent of voters now supporting a cease-fire in Gaza. It’s unclear how TikTok’s algorithm handles political content. But one of lawmakers’ greatest concerns is that the platform has offered a new avenue for people to virally spread political messages outside of traditional media.
This is not to say that TikTok doesn’t pose data-privacy concerns. But as Paris Marx writes, TikTok’s opaque data-privacy practices are not specific to TikTok or China. TikTok is a private company. Like all profit-driven social media companies, US- and Chinese-owned alike, there are genuine concerns over data usage — but the TikTok ban won’t fix those.
'The US government’s desire to ban TikTok instead of taking industry-wide action is a good indication that its campaign isn’t really about national security or data protection,' Marx points out, 'but something much deeper: namely the preservation of American economic and geopolitical hegemony.'
In this regard, the federal government sees a lot to gain from banning TikTok. Asserting control over highly profitable Chinese tech companies will help US companies like Meta maintain dominance in the social media space, an important consideration given the United States’ growing Great Power rivalry with China. The ban may also allow the US government tighter control over media narratives, particularly around Israel’s increasingly unpopular war on Gaza and government repression of protests.
I’m a content creator on TikTok, alongside millions of others. TikTok has allowed me to reach millions of people to share ideas about movements for social and economic justice. Recently, I’ve covered the wave of student protests calling for a cease-fire in Gaza and university endowment divestment from weapons manufacturers and other financial ties to Israeli apartheid by interviewing students on the ground in New York City. If TikTok is banned, it means shutting down my voice and the voices of many others who are loudly opposing our government’s support for Israel and spreading awareness of the growing protest movement.
It’s unclear if the ban will be upheld in court. And if the forced sale is upheld, it’s also unclear if twelve months will be enough for a sale to make it through the legal and financial red tape. In any case, it will be at least a year before we see any changes to the app and its availability in the United States.
If the TikTok ban is successful, though, it will serve as a major blow to free speech without actually protecting users’ data.
