Bilbo Baggins x Wife! Reader
“My peonies!”
A/n: sorry for my small disappearance! Currently setting up to go to college so I’ve been working extra for tuition!
The dwarves had returned to the Shire after a long journey, eager to visit their old friend Bilbo Baggins. To their surprise, they found Bilbo happily married, his new wife named Y/n. She was a shy and reserved hobbit, not uncomfortable around dwarves per se, but she seemed anxious whenever she sat with them.
One sunny morning, the dwarves gathered at Bilbo's home when they heard a commotion outside. Y/n's voice rang out, filled with anger. "My peonies!" she yelled, catching everyone's attention. Bilbo tan outside while his friends rushed to the window to see what was happening. There, they spotted Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, a hobbit who had married into the Baggin family, standing in their front garden. More like on top of the garden.
As Lobelia walked away, she shouted, "They're marigolds!" Y/n's frustration grew, and she turned to Bilbo, her face flushed. "I think she's right," Bilbo admitted, inspecting the flowers. "I may not know my flowers, but I know a bitch when I see one." Bilbo's eyes widened at Y/n’s remark, but he quickly took her hand and led her back inside the house.
Y/n, feeling upset and overwhelmed, retreated to another room, seeking solace in her solitude as she often did when she was sad. Meanwhile, the dwarves gathered around Bilbo, curious about his wife's temperament. Bilbo simply shrugged and said, "She's shy but quick to anger, even quicker when it's Lobelia."
Later that day, Bilbo decided to comfort Y/n, knowing that she had missed three important hobbit meals - second breakfast, elevenses, and lunch. He found her hiding away, her sadness still evident in her eyes. With a gentle smile, he persuaded her to come out and eat with him and his friends.
Reluctantly she joined them at the table, her appetite diminished by her melancholy. However, as she sat among the dwarves and Bilbo, their warm company and jovial conversation began to ease her troubled heart. The dwarves shared stories of their adventures and made her laugh, lifting her spirits little by little.
Throughout the meal, Bilbo stayed close to Y/n, offering her comfort and understanding. He knew that her shyness made it difficult for her to open up, but in moments like these, he felt grateful for the deep bond they shared.
One evening, after a warm dinner, the group gathered by the fireplace in Bilbo's cozy hobbit-hole. Y/n was sitting next to Bilbo, feeling much more at ease in their presence. As they reminisced about their journey together and the battles they had fought, Y/n smiled warmly at the camaraderie between her husband and his dwarven friends.

“Dearest sister, will you hold my hand?” his voice carried between the two like soft summer rain and she hummed lowly, reaching over to grasp at the wrinkled hand. “Such warmth, dear sister,” he murmured with a tired smile. “Even as old as we are, they are still ever warm like the hearth.”
“I was sitting on them earlier, Bilbo,” she quipped, rubbing at her nose with her handkerchief. “That’s why they’re warm.”
Bilbo’s laugh was quiet, no longer as strong and hearty as it had been in the years prior. The two sat on the bench facing the sea, the warm breeze carrying the scent of flowers the world had never seen but only in Valinor. She gently rubbed her bony thumb over his. “I’m tired, Bilbo,” she simply said, and he didn’t bother to look at her to know exactly what she meant. “I think I’m ready to go to sleep.”
“We haven’t even had second breakfast yet.”
“Yes…but it’s been quite long since we slept.”
Bilbo inhaled quietly and nodded. “It has, hasn’t it?” he looked over, taking in the sight of his only sister, old and whitened. “Do you think they’ll be waiting for us?”
She knew instantly of who he spoke of, so long ago, a company of fine dwarves, one in particular standing out amongst the rest; she felt tears gather in her eyes and she met his gaze as she squeezed his hand and whispered tearfully, “I so wish to see them again. They’ll be waiting, dear brother.”
He nodded his head and turned back to the sea, shifting ever so slightly so he could rest his head against hers. “I can’t wait to see them again.”
Knowing that sleep was coming for them, she squeezed his hand quickly. “Do you think Frodo will be okay while we’re gone?”
“He will,” Bilbo answered knowingly and closed his eyes slowly. “I know our boy will.”
She blinked and laid her head against her brothers, the world before her beginning to darken as she shut her eyes, a soft smile on both their lips as they drifted off.
***
“Don’t put that there!” she shouted. “Mother did not like the chest of drawers on that wall!”
“I know what Mother liked and disliked, sister, you don’t have to yell!” he scowled as he tugged the piece of wooden furniture again. “Besides, perhaps if you helped instead of sitting there drinking tea, we wouldn’t be having this argument.”
“You are the one who decided to rearrange the home, Bilbo,” she retorted, making the same face back at him. She then let out a breath and rose, holding out her hand. “Come, we should go out to the garden and sit awhile.”
“But the furnit—”
“Will be here when it’s time for luncheon.”
Bilbo let himself be dragged into the garden where the two sat on the small bench, beginning to pass a pipe between them. “Lovely day,” he murmured, and she nodded.
“Indeed. A beautiful day. I dare say the golden butterlilies will be in bloom soon. Mother loved making syrup from them. Perhaps I should.”
“Mmm, and warm honey cakes to go with it,” he said and the two laughed.
As she passed the pipe back, she happened to turn and look down the road, squinting in the distance as a head appeared over the hill. Her eyes widened as more heads appeared behind the first and the face became clear. Jaw dropping in shock, she patted blindly beside her to get her brother’s attention. “Bil—Bilbo, the road, look at the road.”
His expression pinched as he leaned over and looked in the same direction; his reaction was much like hers as his eyes widened and he stuttered, “Is that—”
“It is!” she howled with excitement and beat him to the punch as she rose to her feet and hopped the fence, picking up the hem of her dress as she ran down the road to meet the oncoming group. “You’re back!” she yelled, hearing Bilbo coming behind her. “You waited! We knew you would!”
Skidding to a halt about ten feet from the group, she felt her brother stand beside her; all at once she was overcome with emotion as she met his eyes. “You waited for us,” she whispered and the dwarf before them smiled, so widely.
“My Master Burglars,” he greeted, taking note of the tears streaming down both their faces.
“It’s really good to see all of you again,” Bilbo all but managed to not blubber with a watery laugh.
The dwarves behind chuckled and she took a step forward, holding out her hand; he in return did the same and took her hand in his, warmth bleeding into her palm as he smiled softly at her and murmured, “‘Ibinê, I have waited long for you to join me.”
Her smile faltered as tears dripped down her cheeks. “I’m sorry, I’m so, so, so sorr—”
“Shhh,” he said with an expression of calm. “You lived a good life. I would not have wished you any other way.” Brushing his thumb over hers he lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles. “And you know I was with you in spirit every step of the way. Never once did I not know you in your grief, in your sorrow, in your happiness, and love. I witnessed it all, ‘ibinê.”
Her lips trembled and she squeezed his hand, letting herself be pulled into his arms; reaching up she cupped his cheek, brushing a thumb under his eye, a knot welling in her throat as she greeted, “It’s good to see you again, Thorin.”

Pair: Thorin Okenshield x FemOC! (Link to the Wattpad fic if you’d rather read it there.)
Genre: Fluff, Angst, found family, heartbreak bc I’m secretly satan.
Word count; 5,239
A/N: To get myself back into my fic in hopes this will inspire me to write the mf third chapter already and quit stalling. — although a baggenshield fic is lowkey calling my name instead
NIENNA GREENWATER YEARNS FOR A DIFFERENT LIFE.
She yearns for a world deeper than the Shire; for adventures so vast and world-changing that she has no choice but to remember for the rest of her life. If Nienna tries hard enough she can almost taste freedom. She can hear the wind whizzing past her hair as she runs amongst the trees, the entire world at her fingertips. Nienna has spent her entire life dreaming; oftentimes her dreams entailed packing whatever she could in a knapsack and disappearing from her hobbit-hole by the river. To find a new life. One where Nienna is brave, fearless, and unapologetically herself.
Nienna has tried to let go of her silly little dreams, because that's all they are. Dreams. The others don't quite understand. In fact, she can count on one finger the only one in the Shire that even remotely understands. His name is Bilbo Baggins. The only one who has foolish little dreams of grandeur, – despite trying to deny it at every corner -- and her best friend in the entire universe. If it weren't for him, she would have said goodbye ages ago.
Their friendship itself is a bit of an odd union; for he is a Baggins who lives on The Hill, whereas she is a Greenwater from The Water. Where his family hold riches and a normal life filled with farming, and safety, hers longed for adventure and destiny and often took risks the others would not. Her ancestors used to travel to far away lands by ship, meeting Elves and Dwarves alike, and in truth, is a lot of reasons behind Nienna's call to adventure. Bilbo's problem is he refuses to acknowledge his Took ancestry and has taken up refuge as his father's son, mainly.
Nienna hums quietly to herself on this particular day, skipping past hobbit-holes and other little Hobbits milling about their days as they do in days past. It's a wonderful day for an adventure, she thinks and hobbles along. The sun hangs high in the sky without a cloud in sight as she makes her way past the Water's edge and bounds upwards towards The Hill. Bilbo won't be expecting her. He usually never is, but that hardly stunts Nienna. She's quite used to his blathering about unannounced visitors and how he would really love for her to come by at an appropriate hour and preferably after writing to schedule a specific time. Tea time, for example, or dinner, or some other boring activity.
Nienna doesn't like schedules. She thinks it takes away the air of mystery, and so, Bilbo's also gotten quite used to that.
"Good morning, Bilbo Baggins!" Nienna yells jovially as she just crosses up the Hill, noticing her very best friend perched atop his bench with his pipe in his hand. "Mind if I join you on this fine day?"
"A very good morning to you, Nienna Greenwater!" Bilbo says, a hearty laugh on the tip of his tongue as he mockingly bows his head. "To what does little old me have such privilege to be greeted by Nienna on this fine morning?"
"Probably for you to stop speaking so formally, Bilbo, my old friend." Nienna grins, and collapses on the seat next to him.
He shakes his head fondly at her. "Ah, yes, yes, of course. Silly me to have forgotten."
Nienna's sparkling eyes turn away from Bilbo, then, to look down the Hill, and past the Water. Her heart aching for places she's never seen, before she turns back to Bilbo just as he blew on his pipe to make one of his famous smoke-rings. Nienna laughs with delight, reaching her hand up to poke a finger through the ring of smoke, watching fascinatedly as the puff of smoke swirls around where her finger had been before disappearing into the wind.
Bilbo smiles at her. He's aware of just how much enjoyment Nienna gets out of his smoke-rings, and it's part of why he did it just now. To move her attention back to the Hill and the Shire and away from her dangerous thoughts of peril and adventure. He wouldn't admit that, of course. If he did, he would have to delve into the deep part of his psyche that craves the same wanderlust as Nienna; and he can't, because nobody on the Hill, or Bag-End ever goes on adventures, and especially not a Baggins.
The two Hobbits this morning were taken by complete surprise in the form of an old man, with a staff at his side, a tall pointed hat, a long and flowing grey cloak, and a flowing white beard that went all the way down below his waist.
"Good morning!" Nienna and Bilbo say in unison.
"What do you mean?" The man asks, looking at the two. "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good on this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"
Personally, Nienna thinks her greeting was simply that; a greeting, and perhaps the last one. It is a good morning. According to her, anyway. She glances at the man, eyes sparkling in curiosity. His identity evades her, but she's fairly certain she's seen him before, maybe once long ago. His entire being evokes such a strong sense of yearning for the adventures that plague her every-waking thought. Too tired of doing the normal thing.
"All of them at once, I suppose," Bilbo answers for both of them, which Nienna appreciates. She doesn't quite know how to explain her thoughts at this precise minute, and is thankful the attention isn't on her directly. "If you have a pipe about you, sit and have a fill of mine!"
Nienna even moves and offers the man her seat, just as Bilbo makes another dashing smoke ring that has her face lighting up in seconds. But he does not sit. He watches the smoke without even an ounce of fascination.
"Very pretty! But I haven't the time to blow smoke-rings this morning. I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, but it is very difficult to find anyone."
Bilbo glances over at Nienna in horror, already seeing her head snap towards the man with such fervor, he's afraid her head's going to pop off. He's already shaking his head and standing back up. "I should think so — in these parts! We have no use for adventures. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things! Makes you late for dinner! I can't think what anyone sees in them."
Meanwhile, Nienna glances back and forth between Bilbo and the stranger; her eyes dancing with delight at this revelation. Is this him? The one her mother used to tell her stories about, the Grey Wizard known by many names, and yet seems to be fond of one in particular; Gandalf the Grey. The wizard that had taken Yavanna Greenwater, Nienna's grandmother, to the isle of the blessed. A sacred place long past the city of Dale that is rumored not to exist anymore after Smaug destroyed it as he had done to Dale, before taking over Erebor.
"Speak for yourself," Nienna says at last, her hopeful gaze turning to the Wizard, while Bilbo pretends to be busy with his mail. "Nienna Greenwater at your service."
She tries to ignore the apprehension growing inside her chest with a vague sense of fear. She knows not what the adventure entails to offer such a service, and who is she, anyway? Nienna Greenwater has never done anything note-worthy in her entire life. She has no business parading her ancestry around like a warm blanket of comfort, when it was not her who has done extraordinary things. She yearns for adventure so badly, but why should she go on this? She's just a hobbit.
"I do know your name, Miss. Nienna Greenwater, as I know your name, Mr. Bilbo Baggins. And you both know my name, and while Nienna is piecing it together, you, Bilbo don't remember me belonging to it. I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me! To think I should have been good-morninged by Belladonna Took's son, and Yavanna Greenwater's granddaughter, as if I was selling buttons at the door!"
"Gandalf, Gandalf! Good gracious me! Not the wandering Wizard that gave Old Took a pair of magic diamond studs that fastened themselves and never came undone till ordered?"
"Don't forget he used to tell such extraordinary tales at parties," Nienna chimes in with a giddy smile at the wonder in Bilbo's voice. "He used to tell stories of Old; about dragons and goblins, the rescuing of princesses, adventures and dreams. Oh, Bilbo, don't you remember the story my mother told us? Yavanna Greenwater, sailing with Elves to the isle of the blessed, fighting hardship after hardship to protect it –"
Bilbo's eyes lit up. "Not the man that used to make such particularly excellent fireworks!" Bilbo cried, unapologetically interrupting Nienna's daydream. "I remember those! Old Took used to have them on Midsummer's Eve. Splendid! But I had no idea you were still around."
"Where else would I be?" Grumbles Gandalf, before waving a hand in the air. "At any rate, I am glad you both remember something about me. You seem to look on my stories and my fireworks kindly, for your grandfather and your grandmother, and poor Belladonna's sake, I will give you what you asked for."
"I beg your pardon, what?" Bilbo says, incredulously. "We haven't asked for anything."
"Yes you have – Twice. I will give you my pardon, and then you will go on an adventure – both of you."
"Sorry, I don't want any adventures, thank you. Good morning – please come back for tea time tomorrow. Come tomorrow, bye!" Bilbo says, moving backwards towards his door, and slamming the door behind him, leaving Nienna alone with Gandalf. She blows out a puff of air, before turning in curiosity towards the Wizard, who does not move away as she suspected he would, but instead approaches Bilbo's door with his staff, carving something on the green door.
He turns to give Nienna a mischievous look, a hint of a smile dancing on his lips. "Tomorrow," he whispers. "Come back tomorrow."
*⋆*❀❁❀*⋆*❀❁❀*⋆*❀❁❀*⋆*❀❁❀
Sleep evades her like a thief in the night, keeping her up till way past dawn. Her mind conjures up images of death; fire and brimstone. Which left Nienna a bit on edge, with, admittedly, a great deal of fear. For almost immediately after Gandalf the Grey disappeared from sight with the promise of tomorrow, the bravery melted out of the poor hobbit and right into the ground, leaving her with a heavy heart for her journey back home. Not a long journey; but a journey nonetheless.
Nienna is nothing but an absolute fool. A silly woman with grandiose dreams, and wanderlust which is surely on the right track of getting her killed. Dragons? Goblins? Possibly Orcs? What in all of Middle Earth was she thinking? Nienna wouldn't last a single day outside the Shire.
Those thoughts lingered long after she thought them. Nienna couldn't for the life of her understand why. An adventure was all she's ever really wanted, and yet now that's she's faced with what's surely to be a life-altering one, all she wants to do is hide in her hobbit-hole. She doesn't. Instead, she musters up whatever courage is dawdling in her brain, and hobbles along the path up the Hill. She can't shake the inkling that Bilbo is going to need her for what's to come. It's much too dangerous for any one hobbit to travel alone; so, if that means danger so be it.
The brunette sighs through her teeth. She hesitates for about five seconds, before knocking on the door twice. A minute later, the door swings open wildly and a bit desperately, revealing a very flustered Bilbo Baggins. Inside, the noise was so loud she nearly toppled backwards off the placemat. She covers her ears and tries and fails to cover up her grin. A noise such as that coming from the kitchen could only mean one thing; Dwarves.
"Nienna?" Bilbo cries after a moment of silence while the two stare at each other, over the noise from behind him. "Thank goodness you're here. Dwarves are in my kitchen. Dwarves. I don't know what's –" Just then, Bilbo pauses in word, his eyes narrowing at Nienna in slight suspicion. "What are you doing here, anyway?" She shows up right after a pack of dwarves show up out of the blue; no, this could be no ordinary visit. "Did you know about this?"
Bilbo jerks his thumb towards his kitchen as he asked the question, bringing Nienna to frown slightly. Her gaze softens, turning a tad bit sheepish. "Not… all of it? Gandalf told me to meet here at tea time, like you said, but not at all what any of this meant. I'm.. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you, Bilbo, honest, but this could be good for us! C'mon, can't you believe it? A real adventure. You and me. Even if we decide not to go; it's not everyday we see and meet dwarves." She pauses her spiel to giggle, nudging his shoulder with her own. "We're being terrible hosts. I'll help you."
Bilbo Baggins wants to scream and shake his head, and maybe stomp his feet like a naughty hobbit boy throwing a tantrum. He wants to shake Nienna's shoulders and tell her that no, he does not wish or have any business going on such an adventure, thank you very much, and that he'd much rather sit and enjoy his cakes and tea in peace; but the words or actions would not come. He knows good and well he would not be able to stand the flicker of hurt in her eyes. Whether it be by luck or the opposite, a steady knock followed by the doorbell was his saving grace. It kept him from saying anything he'd regret, at least. "Ah, that will be more dwarves, I imagine. Could you answer that, Nie? I really must have a drink or I'm afraid I'm going to fall down."
"Of course!" Nienna breaths, her steady grin growing wider if it was even possible. Bilbo sends her a grateful nod before he's disappearing towards the kitchen, leaving Nienna to turn and face the door. She opens it as gently as she could, but..
In fell four dwarves landing in a heap at her feet, with Gandalf shortly behind them. "Ah, Nienna Greenwater!" He booms good-natured, sending her a warm smile. "Might I introduce Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and especially Thorin!"
Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur busy themselves with hanging up theirs and Thorin's hoods after a quick bow and a "at your service." Nienna was only half paying attention. Her eyes were drawn to Thorin, a very important dwarf. None other than Thorin Oakenshield himself stood not even five inches from Nienna. The Thorin; the one who hopefully one day be at his rightful throne as King under the Mountain. He does little to acknowledge her except to incline his head respectfully, although he doesn't exactly seem all that enthused by her presence.
"Now, then, that pleasantries are out of the way, would you accompany us to the kitchen Nienna, that is, if there's any left for us late arrivals. And where is our good friend, Bilbo Baggins?"
"He's in the kitchen, sir," Nienna says kindly, trying not to appear as excited as she feels.
She sends them all one last warm smile, before leading them towards the kitchen. Immediately upon reaching the destination, the early and late arrivals each had a list of demands of food and drink that they'd like; all aimed at poor Bilbo himself. Nienna shoots a longing look at one of the scones. She shakes her head and moves towards Bilbo, who had already departed towards the pantry, to help him with all the various requests.
The dwarves speak and look at her kindly, but it's fairly obvious they are all a bit weary by her presence. Not that Nienna could blame them. After all, they had probably only expected one hobbit, – if any at all – not two, and certainly not a female.
Ah, well. Nothing to worry about now, she supposes, while reaching for the wine on the shelf.
She passes by Bilbo, who is currently busy making Gandalf's eggs, and brings the wine to Thorin first. Nienna is careful while filling his cup to the brim to not over-fill or under-fill, and gives him a bow, before maneuvering around the other dwarves until she reaches Gandalf. She fills his cup next, and he thanks her graciously.
"Confusticate and bebother these dwarves!" Bilbo says aloud upon his return to the room, a deep scarlet tint to his face that she's never seen before; Nienna coming along the bend just as he did, carrying more spoons and knives. "Why don't they come and lend a hand?"
Nienna hasn't quite matched faces to a name yet, but if she was correct, Balin, Dwalin, Fili, and Kili came to their aid; as if they had been expecting those words eventually. Her eyes widen a fraction as they whisk trays and tables alike and lay everything afresh out on them in just a tiny blink of her eye. Nienna can't help but feel enamored by them all. They're absolutely fascinating, and despite being a bit demanding, it was mostly a good meeting. To her, anyway. She couldn't speak for Bilbo himself.
Soon enough, they're all finally gathered together around the table. Nienna takes a tiny bite of her score that she had finally acquired, before engaging Kili and Fili in a most exciting tale of their journey to the Shire. The way they described the paths and roads and large places outside Bree only fuel Nienna's need to see it for herself. She wasn't too enthralled with their stories of riches, though. Nienna doesn't need gold or money to be happy. Water and good company, and adventure now and again seems quite pleasant to her. To get married and have children, maybe. She hasn't thought about it a lot.
Bilbo sits at his stool alone by the fire nibbling on a biscuit, while the other dwarves and Gandalf continue to eat and talk excitedly amongst each other. This goes on for quite a while. Nienna doesn't mind. She could talk for hours and hours with Kili and Fili, as they were the most fun, she decided. Even with how weary they were, they spoke jovially and didn't seem to mind her pestering questions. But eventually, as is with most things, it was time to move on.
The shenanigans of dwarves once again fill her with awe. This won't be the last time. One by one, they all got up out of their seats and start stacking the dishes in a very large stack; while Bilbo trails after them nearly losing his mind shouting and pleading for them to be careful. After all, those are his mother's old valuables that had been handed down to him.
It was no surprise to her, but a great deal of a shock to Bilbo, when they all – minus Thorin and Gandalf who were busy in conversation – began to sing:
"Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That what Bilbo Baggins hates –
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!
Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! Carefully with the plates!"
Nienna couldn't control herself; she claps and nods her head to the dwarves' song, laughing merrily and grinning over at a slightly unamused Bilbo. If they had done the things they sang about she would have not laughed; but they hadn't done any of it. In fact, they cleaned them all up nicely and put it back without a single scratch on them.
The thrill of today provides proof of the promise of tomorrow; and it has yet to leave Nienna. She slides next to Bilbo on the stool, grinning from ear to ear as she watches each dwarf leave the room, and then return with their musical instruments. For tea time was over. And with it, a new adventure of music before dinner.
"Isn't this wonderful, Bilbo?" Nienna asks him quietly as Balin leaves to retrieve his and Thorin's musical instruments that were left outside.
"I could think of a great deal more that is wonderful," Bilbo mutters under his breath; Although even he has to admit there is nothing quite like songs, especially one sung by a dwarf or elves.
Nienna doesn't pay much mind to Bilbo's words, however, and allows the excitement to keep running through her as she waits impatiently for the dwarves to return. Her waiting does not go in vain. Soon enough, the dwarves are all in their respective spots with their instruments.
One by one; they began to sing:
"Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!"
The hauntingly beautiful melody sends chills up Nienna's spine. Their voices mix together in perfect harmony, conveying the deep loss; and their undoubted determination to reclaim their home. She almost finds herself misty-eyed. The deep loss is almost like a pang in her gut, even if it is not her who has lost. Nienna understands now. Just exactly what this adventure means for Thorin and the dwarves, and for her and Bilbo, and just exactly what they plan on doing. Their determination is quite contagious.
For, Nienna is even more ready to go.
Nienna was so deeply invested in the dwarves' song, that she hadn't felt Bilbo moving away from them until Thorin broke the silence that followed their song; "where are you going?" He demanded, and Bilbo simply made some silly excuse about light. Although, the dwarves assured him they love the dark. Dark for dark business, that is, and while Nienna doesn't quite understand; she's still just ready to get on with this. She wants to know just what dangers they would face, should they accept the adventure. But most importantly; Nienna wants to know why Gandalf chose her and not just Bilbo. Why should he have invited her along on this quest? What has she got to offer besides an incredibly bubbly personality and a startling thirst for the World Beyond.
She will get her answer, but it won't be the one she's expecting.
Nienna sits quietly as a mouse, after Bilbo had made such a racket that she's afraid to breathe, let alone move in fear of being yelled at too; and waits with bated breath for Thorin to speak.
"Gandalf, dwarves, Mr. Baggins, and Miss. Greenwater! We are met together in the house of our friend and fellow conspirators, these two most excellent and audacious Hobbits – all praise to their wine and ale and their gracious hosting! –" Thorin pauses, and Nienna smiles.
"We are lucky to be in your presence, Thorin, if you'll excuse my dear friend's lack of words. Your song and company is quite all we needed."
Bilbo's mouth widens in protest, although no noise comes out of it and all Nienna does is shake her head at him with a soft smile. She knows how hard this all is for him, the two sides of him fighting like some wild tennis match; but still. Thorin deserves some praise, after all, he hadn't made a big fuss about Nienna's presence, or about how mere Hobbits are not warriors and most have never really done anything wildly great, either.
Thorin surprises Nienna with a nod and a tight-lipped smile, before he continues: "We are here to talk about our plans, ways, our means, the policy and devices. The journey is a long one, a journey which many of us, save Gandalf, might never return —"
A loud squeak disrupts Thorin yet again, – A squeak Nienna has only heard twice in all the times she's known him – Bilbo having been the reason behind it, and he now cowers on the placemat shivering, and frantically calling out, "struck by lightning! Struck by lightning!"
"Oh, Bilbo," Nienna murmurs sadly as she hops off her stool and runs to assist her only friend. Guilt swirls around her chest, nearly suffocating her; she should have been a better friend, instead of getting all swept off her feet over the thought of an adventure. One that Bilbo has expressly said he did not want to go on. "Can somebody help m–"
Before Nienna could even get the words out, Fili and Kili assisted by Dwalin are at her side in an instant and hoisting Bilbo up in his chair just outside the parlour. Now, Nienna knows she should continue on with the dwarves in their conversation and stipulation, but she can't find it in herself to leave Bilbo's side. So, she sits on the floor beside his chair, keeping him company and humming slightly while trying to ignore the very real fact that the dwarves are in there right now with Gandalf, possibly talking about how neither she nor Bilbo has any business on this quest if all they were gonna do is bring about trouble by having episodes.
Her face turns a deep shade of velvet, their words rushing in her ears; she was so embarrassed that she didn't even feel Bilbo stand out of his chair, until his hand was in front of her face to pull her up. Nienna frowns a little. She shrugs and allows him to help her up, and it isn't until they're standing in front of the parlour door that she understands what he's ready to do. And that he wasn't going to do it alone, and hoped that Nienna was still as willing as she was before he fell flat. Her eyes light up and she nods, giddiness flooding through her as Bilbo finally pushes the door open and steps inside.
"Pardon me," Bilbo interrupts. "I don't pretend to understand what you are talking about, or your meaning of burglars and what in the world a beacon of light compass is, but I believe I'm right in my understanding that you think Nienna and I are no good. Let us show you – although I know there is no mark on my door I painted it myself a week ago, and I am quite sure you came to the wrong house – but tell us what you want done, and I'm sure Nienna feels as I do about it; we will try it. Even if we have to fight the greatest were-worms in the Last Desert."
"Um, Bilbo," Nienna pipes up from beside him, and nearly shrinks back as every pair of eyes turn towards her. "There *is* a mark. I watched Gandalf do it."
"Of course there is a mark," confirms Gandalf. "I put it there myself as surely as Nienna was my witness. For very good reasons, mind you. You asked me to find the fourteen man for your expedition, and I went ahead and threw in a fifteenth. I chose Mr. Baggins and Miss. Greenwater. Just let anyone say that I chose the wrong ones or the wrong house, and you can stop at thirteen and have all the bad luck you like, or go back to digging coal."
Nienna has never seen someone scowl as angrily as Gandalf did in this moment; it was enough to render the room to silence as nobody dared to argue.
"That's right," continues Gandalf. "I have chosen Mr. Baggins and Miss. Greenwater, and that oughta be enough for all of you. If i say Bilbo is a burglar, then a burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. As for Nienna, she is as pure as they come in all of the Shire! When all hope feels like it is lost, she is the tip of the balance. You remember it as well as I do, Thorin. You may all live to thank me yet. Now, can we please get some light on this?"
Nienna frowns. When all hope is lost, she is the tip of the balance. Did Gandalf have to speak so vaguely all the time? He never gave any answers and when he does, it is not plain enough to understand. Nienna doesn't feel like a beacon of hope. Maybe a hopeless romanticizing woman with a thirst for adventure, but to be a tip in the balance? That's going a bit too far; but she isn't given the time to question it as Gandalf brings out a map.
"This was made by Thror, your grandfather, Thorin," Gandalf explains. "It is a plan of the mountain."
"I don't see this helping us much," Thorin says after glancing at it. "I remember the mountain well enough and its lands. And I know where Mirkwood is, and the Withered Heath where the great dragons bred."
"There's a red-marked dragon on the Mountain, but it'll be easy enough to find him without it," says Balin.
Nienna was growing quite tired as they spoke back and forth of maps and doors, a key and a dark past with Smaug the Dragon; and back and forth about burglaries and a hope tipping scale that she nearly cried in relief when Bilbo suggested an early start after breakfast and a goodnight's sleep.
After Nienna's head hit the pillow she was out like a light and was the only Hobbit to join the dwarves for breakfast; having been the one to make them.

Week 4 - Sweets
And on we go...
Prompt: Sweets
Pairing: Bilbo x Thorin, Ori x OC
Words: 2 365
Warnings: Tension, fear, seductive cake
“Welcome,” the King greeted, and—even though he’d spoken in a calm, measured voice—his voice was booming across the mostly empty chamber.
The two hitherto taciturn men hastened to his side. A short, hushed conversation ensued, and then the King turned back to his potential captives.
“I’m informed that you were found trying to camp in a warg-infested region,” he said, his tone heavy with disapproval. “Very bad idea.”
Elya cocked her head; his inflexion and speech rhythm struck her as odd as well. It seemed to her that the King and their handsome guide had acquired the language by studying an old book, only ever practising amongst themselves, but she was only surmising. Mayhap, it was only disuse or misplaced gravitas which made him speak in such a stilted, cautious manner.
“What is a warg?” Bilbo exclaimed, taking another eager step closer to the throne.
Only when three sets of brows drew together warningly did he realise that he’d better not rush towards a foreign dignitary as if he were a common merchant in his festival stall.
“A dangerous beast.”
More whispering. The King frowned in visible disbelief.
“Where can I find one? I’d be very interested in studying—” Bilbo went on, but was interrupted by a massive, beringed hand being raised commandingly.
“You’d meet them only once,” Thorin chuckled. “Ori can show you a drawing and explain. After you’ve eaten. Kíli tells me you’ve only had smelly water?”
His brow wrinkled again as if he was unsure about his halting translation.
“It was broth, thank you very much, and it was quite nourishing,” Bilbo replied sharply.
“Cakes then,” the King said with a careless shrug. “Fíli?”
At once, the golden-haired warrior turned on his heels and exited the hall.
“They’re quite good,” Ori whispered into Elya’s ear. “The King honours you.”
Twisting her head this way and that, Elya—overtired and overwhelmed by the recent developments in her first and foreseeably last research mission—struggled to pinpoint what it was that irked her about the strange people who’d effectively captured them.
When the King stood, it hit her like a punch to the gut. They were all uncommonly short for men of such brawn and overall physiological structure.
“Dwarves?” she whispered under her breath before she could stop herself. Her fingers itched to fumble in her backpack to retrieve her sketchbook once more.
“Ah! Yes, that is the word!” Ori cheered with a bright smile. “Dwarves. Yes!”
Elya’s eyes almost bulged out of her skull—she’d always imagined dwarves as small, old men with long beards and pointy hats, carrying lanterns and spades while digging holes in people’s back gardens.
She’d never considered that even the silly ornaments theoretically could have been young and gorgeous before ending up harassing cats and tripping burglars in the dead of night.
“May I draw you?” she asked breathlessly, turning around to face Ori again for two very good reasons. First, the way Bilbo was staring hungrily at their host made her stomach churn uncomfortably, and second, she found that she was inherently desirous to look upon that pale, freckled face as much as she possibly could.
“Me? I—yes, if that is your desire. Unfortunately, you shall not be allowed to take your art when you leave. Nobody, as you were told, must learn of our existence.”
At first, Elya had found that imperative ludicrous and had fostered not even the slightest intention of respecting it, but as she now stared up at the invaluable riches displayed on and in every wall, she started to understand.
Thus, she nodded with more conviction than before.
“Tell me about your studies,” the King demanded, going as far as to step off his dais and join his unexpected, improbable guests at the foot of his throne. “What are you searching? Have you found it?”
“I feel like we’ve found more than we’ve bargained for,” Bilbo muttered under his breath. “Things we didn’t expect to find anywhere, let alone on a deserted island.”
As she was a reasonable woman and thus was standing very close to the only person she knew and could trust, Elya had no problems making out his words, though, and so she lifted her hands and conjured up her blankest, most innocent expression.
“I’m a mere assistant,” she said in a breathy, whistling voice. “There is very little I could tell His Majesty.”
Whirling around, Bilbo gave her a dumbfounded, distinctly suspicious look.
Thorin II hummed pensively and opened his thin but sensual lips to reply when the door swung open with a bang and an impossibly rotund man strolled in, carrying a platter heaped with sweetmeats and cakes.
“Impossible,” Bilbo commented under his breath; he couldn’t help doing the math in his head and coming to the conclusion that it was not possible that a single man could lift, let alone bear, such a weight.
Moreover, the newcomer didn’t even appear to be strained in any way.
“Ah, there comes Bombur,” the King announced and waved his hand in a generous gesture of invitation. “The cakes are made with a local fruit—Ori will show you a picture of it so you might recognise it—that is quite tart when eaten untreated but very sweet when stirred into a dough and consequently baked.”
Both Elya’s and Bilbo’s eyes narrowed—in their experience, it was unusual that a royal would know not only his cook but also the ingredients of his meals by name.
Instinctively, they both bowed, eyeing the offered treats uncertainly.
On the one hand, they’d not consumed anything but insipid broth and stale biscuits for weeks, but, on the other hand, taking food from strangers was dangerous in more ways than one.
“They are digestible,” Ori promised in a quiet voice.
“How would you know? You’d also claim that this tray is easy to lift,” Elya replied in a discreet hiss without taking her eyes off the impressive figure of the King who was presently entirely absorbed by Bilbo’s stammering explanation of their doomed expedition.
“A pebble could not carry Bombur’s platter, but they could eat themselves through the cakes. Trust me!”
Despite not understanding how rocks could do either of the described things, Elya realised that she wanted to believe the one who’d brought them out from the cold, windy wilderness into a warm, beautiful underground kingdom.
Hence why she extended a grimy, slightly trembling hand and picked up a dense bun, covered in a sticky, fragrant syrup—her mouth was watering instantly.
“Elya!” Bilbo said warningly, but it was too late. She’d already sunken her teeth into the fluffy pastry and was moaning indecently at the countless unknown flavours bursting across her tongue like fireworks shooting across a night sky.
“Oh, it’s so good,” she mumbled, embarrassed by her shameless behaviour.
“My girl!” Bilbo chided. “Did I not warn you to refrain from actions that might get you entangled irreversibly?”
“They said they’re dwarves, not fae,” Elya chuckled, wondering whether her undeniable, witnessed fall would entitle her to another sweet. After all, if she’d bound her soul, hand, and heart unwittingly to this strange folk by partaking in the sugary feast they’d laid out, what difference would it make whether she ate one or ten?
As she reached out slowly, Bilbo’s eyes followed her every movement, but he didn’t object any further.
Feeling the King’s intensely blue eyes on him, he squared his shoulders and joined his assistant—after all, he knew how important it was to show appreciation and interest for any potential host culture.
“So, Ori has admitted that we’re dwarves?” Thorin asked calmly as he watched Bilbo chew cautiously. “I didn’t expect him to be quite that forthcoming. How peculiar…and interesting! I wonder what other secrets my nephews and the little scribe might have entrusted you with.”
Ori flinched; he was evidently afraid to have committed a faux pas. His ears were turning dark red as the princes, also eyeing the pastries longingly, exploded into raucous laughter once more.
Bilbo nodded cautiously. “They had to tell us something about you and this Kingdom to convince us that they were not merely trying to catch their evening meal.”
At that, the King visibly bristled. “We do not eat the poor souls that find themselves stranded on our shores.”
His handsome features tightened. “However, you were not washed astray, were you? You purposefully set out to find us here. May I ask why?”
Bilbo shook his head vehemently. “No, we were searching for new species of plants and animals.”
“To steal them?” Thorin’s voice was sharp and accusing now, making Elya wither where she stood. She was unsure whether to step closer to her boss once more or whether to seek refuge behind the ginger dwarf who was still watching her with a small smile.
Blowing up his cheeks and rubbing his nose, Bilbo kept his peace. He instinctively felt that he didn’t want to lie to this mystical ruler if he could avoid it.
“Only if we had the feeling that our finds might change the world for the better.”
He’d discussed the potential risks with Elya on their long voyage, and they’d decided that—except if they were to find the cure for cancer or an ingenious solution to pollution—they’d disturb as little as possible.
“Do you know where you are?” Thorin interrogated sharply. “If I was to toss you back into the ocean, would you find your way back here?”
Bilbo swallowed thickly before exchanging a meaningful glance with Elya who shrugged sheepishly. She’d been the one to take most of the day-to-day notes, but neither one of them was a trained sailor.
“There has been an element of luck,” Bilbo then admitted. “We’d had our sights set on a group of islands…”
“You would not have liked the closest one,” Thorin grumbled. “The pointy-eared savages might well have tried to poison you. The rivers running through their lands are sluggish with dark enchantments!”
“As I said, luck,” Bilbo repeated.
When Elya nudged him in the ribs discreetly and coughed into his ear several times, he went on, “Also, we’ve already been informed that we’re not to take anything from this island. No specimens, no recordings, no notes—thus, robbed of our meticulous archives, I dare say that we’d never find our way back here. You are safe.”
“You’ll remember, though,” Thorin commented provocatively.
“Not if there is a nifty potion baked into these treats,” Bilbo joked, earning another thunderous gaze from the dwarven ruler.
For a while, the hall was eerily silent except for the soft sound of enthusiastic chewing.
“I respect your inquisitive mind,” Thorin finally said. “You must be tired. If you’re willing, I shall arrange for you to be awoken at dusk. You can accompany me, and I’ll attempt to show you a warg if you’re still so eager to see one.”
“That would be wonderful,” Bilbo exclaimed, his scientific curiosity once more overruling his sense of self-preservation.
He was about to shake hands with Thorin when another gnawing doubt overcame his mind.
“What about Elya? She’s been acting very foolishly, but I’ve yet to see another woman in these halls. You won’t…abduct and imprison her for her impudence, will you?”
Thorin’s dark brows drew together in earnest vexation. “There are many things you’ve not yet seen, Bilbo Baggins. If you give me your word that you won’t breathe a word about them to another soul, you might, in time, discover all you’ve been wondering about. As for the young lady, no, we shall not detain her against her will.”
Relief drove a peal of laughter up Bilbo’s throat, but it never burst forth. Once, he would have confidently vouched for Elya’s unwillingness to be left behind on a deserted, wild island. Now, he was no longer so sure.
“Worry not,” he said instead. “There are few that would even want to hear from us or believe us. Your secrets are safe.”
“I doubt that,” Thorin muttered, his expression mellowing into something neither Bilbo nor Elya could describe or fully understand. “Now, Balin will take you to a suite of rooms where you can rest.”
They’d been so focused on the breathtaking spectacle of the King that they’d completely missed the discreet, noiseless entry of a white-haired, aged dwarf who now stood a little distance off, wearing a richly embroidered tunic and a beatific, welcoming smile.
“Come,” he crooned in a low, melodious voice. “The young ones have done well in bringing you here. Follow me!”
Sensing their nervous confusion, the old dwarf gave them another reassuring grin.
“We are an old people, and we honour our traditions, but you mustn’t be afraid that we’d do you any harm.”
His speech was more fluid and sounded almost natural, Elya noticed.
When she brought it up, he gave a flattered chuckle. “Thorin and I have been abroad. The young ones were born in exile. I might have practised more than the King has, though.” Again, he chortled merrily.
Exile! The word echoed through Elya’s mind, but she decided against probing further as the memory was visibly painful to their stalwart guide, leading them unerringly through the endless, sombre tunnels.
“But…”
“Ori is my apprentice,” the creature called Balin explained kindly. “He’s a good lad and eager to be of service.”
“I’ve noticed,” Elya replied carefully, throwing a vain glance over her shoulder in hopes of seeing that luminous creature lurking in the ever-shifting shadows only to be disappointed.
“What dread are you seeking?” Balin asked.
“No, nothing.” Elya felt herself blush furiously. “I—Will I see him again? He’s insinuated that he could show me a few drawings.”
At that, the wizened, bearded dwarf gaped at her in open, genuine surprise. “Did he now? How uncharacteristically brazen of him! Do you want this to happen? I can arrange for him to meet you after your repose if that is your earnest desire.”
“I’d like that very much,” Elya blurted out, earning another unfathomable look from Bilbo who’d never believed her to be easily impressed with men.
“So be it then.” Balin grinned cheerily. “That will surely cheer the old boy greatly!”

Chapter One: Last of their kind
Chapter 2
Love had always felt like a distant dream to Nessa.
A fantasy one's imagination makes up to cope with the everlasting loneliness of what it meant to be a ranger. Even more so when she was turned away from the only place she could call home.
Even if she never particularly liked the elves, her being half-elf meant she grew up in the core of Elvish life. Rivendell. Her mother who was dying of a broken heart didn't help either. Especially since she is still knocking on death's door years later. Nessa presumed it would be easier to deal with her mother as if she's already passed than to watch her slowly dying.
It's not like her mother would care anyway. The last she heard of her was that she was doing much better since Nessa left. Seeing her daughter obsess over everything fairy-related must've been the cause for her decline. And Nessa's leaving, despite how horrible it sounds, made her survive.
Being Half-Elf and growing up in Rivendell meant Nessa would have always been fighting to fit into a world that saw her as a joke. A 5'3 half-elf half-fairy whose loud bubbly and, at most, eccentric personality only made her stick out like a sore thumb. I guess she could blame the fairy genes for that...But she never wanted to blame her fairy heritage for anything! The few times she had heard about the Fae from her mother appealed to her greatly. The lost race of the fairies would always hold a place in her heart. She was proud of her origin.
The Fairyland, though practically nonexistent today, sounded like the perfect place for her. If only it wasn't for the major depletion it accumulated in all of time, she would be living the dream by now. Thus her Elvish mother took her to Rivendell when she was a baby.
Also, because her fairy father flew off. (Literally.)
__________________
In a quiet clearing on the outskirts of a woodland, near a village in Bree, Nessa received a letter.
Upon opening, almost unreadable scribbles - assumed to be due to someone's shaky old hands scrambling to write their last words from their death bed - become clear and her theory of someone old writing this letter only made more sense to her as she began to read;
Dear, long lost sister.
My name is Rogue. All I've been told is that we have the same father. Sometime after he left you he became my father also. So, I am writing you this letter in the hopes that you may want to talk. You don't know me and I don't know you and yet we're sisters. Deep down I know you will do anything for me and I'll do the same for you.
This is why I want to ask, Would you like to meet in person? I will be arriving shortly.
We sure have a lot to catch up on. Time is of the essence, my dear sister.
From,
Rogue.
Nessa's eyes were as wide as her pet Owl's when she refused to give her another treat, and her mouth was agape. Nessa's had a long-lost sister this whole time and only finds out now?!
If this sister is who they say they are, they must be old now, as she speculates. Half-human. Half-Fae. Rogue is right, time is not on their side. Death seems to follow Nessa and even still, plagues a half-Fae-half-human.
The sweet hoot of her owl (Pilvi) and the gentle flapping of its wings brought Nessa back to her surroundings. She must pack a bag immediately. Food. Water. Medicine if needed. What state is Rogue in? Are they ill? Is that why they've waited all this time to contact them? Humans don't live long after all. Or had they only just heard about Nessa, as Nessa had about them? Is it too late to meet them? She received this letter weeks ago...
Her pet owl hooted again.
"Aw Pilvi, sorry, were you hooting for me?" Nessa caressed her bird and watched her enjoy it. Pilvi's eyes squinted and her head relaxed as if the loving touch could melt her.
Her precious hoot filled the room once again and Nessa cooed back, softly speaking to her.
Interrupting them, a knock sounded. It was uncommon for Nessa to receive visitors. Not after the fairyland practically died out. This must be some kind of trick, ironically.
Pilvi was flustered. Her wings sprayed in and out continually. After calming her owl down, Nessa grabbed the nearest item that she could find, which could be used as a weapon.
A frying pan.
Nessa slowly opened the door, peering out. An unknown figure stood in the pouring rain. Their fur cloak visibly weighed heavy on their shoulders as it soaked with rain. Along with wet blue locks of hair that peaked from under their hood.
"Oh, my, are you lost?" Nessa asked worriedly. She pondered to herself as to what might have happened to this poor soul out there in the woods in the rain.
"I am Rogue, your sister."
"Oh. You're not old,"
Rogue blinked in surprise.
"Excuse me?"
"You're human. Aren't you supposed to be old? Dying on your deathbed?" Nessa waved the frying pan about as she confusingly tangented. "That's why you asked to meet. And your handwriting...very shaky!" She pointed the pan in Rogue's direction who, in return, produced a blank stare.
The frantic waving of the frying pan returned along with another tangent from Nessa and before they knew it they were bickering like sisters do. Amongst the chaos Rogue managed to snatch the frying pan, tired of Nessa waving it too close to their face for their liking.
"GIVE IT BACK!" Nessa shrieked.
This continued for a few moments until Nessa suddenly screamed
"OLD CREEPY MAN!" as she pointed to someone not that far behind Rogue.
Rogue turned around and tried not to show her annoyance at the man. "Speaking of old, that is Gandalf. He's not creepy, he's a wizard."
A long pause comes as all three take long looks at each other.
"OLD CREEPY WIZARD?!?!" Nessa screamed again and in this moment of distraction, she grabbed the frying pan back and held it up as if she was going to do damage.
Rogue yelled out for her and swiftly snatched it again. "I'm half human. HALF. I'm not old."
"Then stop flailing like a child." Gandalf scolded as he walked closer to them, staff in hand.
"She started it!-" Rogue began as Gandalf stopped them again.
"Long-lost sister. Wizard. I think I'm going to faint." Nessa felt her forehead with her hand. The cold rain did nothing to cool her down.
"Let me help with that," Rogue declared as they took a purple glowing flower from their bag and the next thing Nessa saw was darkness.
_________________
Nessa stirred in her sleep, her nose twitched at the smell of
Pipe-weed. She had the weirdest dream. There was a wizard and her long-lost sister!?
She opened her eyes, expecting to be in her bed. Alone. Maybe with Pilvi by her side. And a book. But no. A figure with long blue hair, braided sporadically, leaned over her. Her dream was real. Though, no wizard in sight. Maybe that was the part her dream made up.
Before she could start to question anything and everything, Rogue placed a hand over her mouth and sent her a look, asking for trust. Nessa nodded and the hand was taken off her mouth.
Rogue slowly held out her hands for Nessa to hold. The single touch of their palms caused a glimmering shine to arise across their skin almost as if they were made of glitter. Their glowing veins painted the room in gold.
They studied their skin for what felt like years, unable to look away. "Fae markings," Nessa whispered, releasing a breath she didn't know she was holding.
"Fae markings," Rogue repeated, pleased that her trick worked.
"You're my sister!"
"Of course I am. Now let's get down to business," They gently let go of Nessa's hands, and the glow dimmed until it was no more.
Rogue took a chair, spinning it around to sit on it backwards,
"Would you like to help a group of Dwarves take back their land?"
"Too right!" Nessa wholeheartedly agreed. She had nothing to lose. With the died-out fairyland and all, she also most certainly understood their wanting to take back land. These sisters finally reunited, the last of their kind would be helping the dwarves reclaim their home, as they wished others would have helped the Fae.
"You didn't make up that wizard, by the way."
"How did you know-"

a risky idea that I wrote down and would like to share :)
POV: Smaug, a centuries-old being, can shapeshift. You are fem!Bilbo sneaking quietly through Erebor’s treasure hoard as The Company’s unwitting burglar. Smaug appears to you as a vibrant elfin femme, voluptuous and long… draped like sinew along the cursed gold. She is preoccupied and does not know you are there.
Also, fem!Thorin, with whom you are smitten, is on your mind.

This came from our prompt list last year, and it's the first submission for this year's Fluffy February!
Day 8: Callous
Fandom: The Hobbit
Relationship: fem!Bilbo Baggins/fem!Thorin Oakenshield
Word Count: too long already i'm tired
written for @fluffyfebruary
This AU draws heavily from the EXTREMELY inspiring work of @rutobuka2 (specifically, lumberjack!Thorin and Thorin's design in the Barricade AU (link to NSFW comic))
*i am publishing this in its current and incomplete form because i'm not going to finish it!*
Dis had said, This one is a Kindergarten teacher because I'm running out of friends.
Thorin had said, I wish you would run out faster, but she'd gone on the date anyway. Her sister had gotten married two summers before, and was now bound and determined to find someone for Thorin. Usually, they were people Dis barely knew, from her jewelry work or Vili's gym. On one truly unspeakable occasion, Thorin had gone out with someone Dis described to her as "unfortunately tall," and who turned out to be a wood elf. But they were not all bad. The last time Dis set her up, Dori had become a trusted friend (if not anything more). At the end of the day, she was willing to give some Kindergarten teacher at least one date, if only so Dis would back off for a few more weeks.
But her sister was right: Kindergarten was not her type. As she readied herself for the evening, she was imagining her date as a paint-spattered, bubbly blonde. In her imagination, she could see her talk to the waiter like they were best friends and eventually tell Thorin her entire life story. She'd have no boundaries and no real difficulty in her life.
Thorin sighed. She was being unfair, but she already didn't think they'd have anything in common. Thorin's own job was grueling, demanding, and isolating. She wasn't the kind of person who could sit down with someone and get cozy over appetizers-- the idea made her frown in discomfort. She needed something steady and lasting, rooted in the earth like the trees in her woods.
She pulled on her flannel and snapped the buttons all the way to her neck. At least she wouldn't have to talk about herself, if the teacher did decide to share her life story.
When she arrived at the restaurant at 6:30, Thorin parked her truck and headed straight to her preferred booth. The spotty teenager at the host stand had been working the last couple times she'd been here and gave her a smile. She kept her face to the ground, scowling.
Her seat was in the back, close to the kitchen and a little noisy. She had a great view of the front windows, where she could see anybody pulling up. When Dis had made the mistake of setting her up with the elf, Thorin had been able to slip away when she saw the creature crawl out of her car in the parking lot. Even having narrowly escaped what would have been the worst date of her life, she'd spent the rest of the evening thinking up insults for her sister.
Now, Thorin watched the parking lot idly and turned the table knife over in her hands. It was sturdy quality, if not very sharp. The wood of the handle was a little rotten from being soaked, but the metal was good. She heard a woman's voice from a table in front of her.
"Sorry, but could I get a refill? I'm afraid I'm still waiting." The waitress scurried off and Thorin saw the Hobbit woman sigh and shift in her seat. She felt a stab of sympathy and sipped at her own water. It seemed they were both stuck in date-limbo.
The Hobbit was cute, with mops of auburn curls on the top of her head and just below her ankles. She wore a deep burgundy dress and looked to be doing a crossword puzzle at the table. Thorin watched her in profile, forgetting about the cars in the parking lot.
[Bilbo, Kindy teacher, goes on a first and second date with Thorin, park ranger. She's half in love already and Thorin is on the exact same page. Actually, Thorin is fully in love by the second date and wants to start looking for rings so she never has to give her up. But that's not really something she's about to say.
Thorin takes her home in the car she borrowed from Dis and before Bilbo gets out, Thorin grabs her hand and pulls her so they're facing each other. She slowly brings their faces together, a hand on either side of Bilbo's bare neck. After a perfect first kiss, Thorin dives in for another and another, stopping when she hears Bilbo suddenly gasp. She keeps stroking her thumbs under her jaw as she leans back a little.
Bilbo is near speechless at the feeling of Thorin's calloused fingers dragging over the soft skin of her neck and jaw. She takes Thorin's mouth again a little roughly and bites at her lip, before recalling herself and pulling away. It's almost 11 on a weeknight (WHY did she agree to go out on a Monday again???) so, it's time for sensible teachers to go to sleep. Thorin asks what time school gets out and if she can pick her up for dinner. Again. The next day. She teaches half days so she gets out at 1:30. Thorin says they can have lunch, too.]

Heyyy i just wanna say that I LOVE your writing. Its so so comforting 🫶🫶🫶
Can I request a story/headcanon about how Thorins company/ specifically Kíli would react if (fem) reader got her hair braided by her (non dwarf) friend, and it was just a friendly thing, but the dwarves thought it was a courting braid?
Pairing Fem!Reader x Kíli
Thank youu🫶💗
Omg thanks! Comfort writing is a big honor 🥹
Mission of Misunderstanding- Kili x F!Human!Reader
Shout-out to my girlies in the unbraidable hair community lmao 🤝 Warnings: one minor swear lol, a couple suggestive remarks
One more step and your feet were going to fall off. Surrendering to the burn, you all but fell down onto the log, tilting your feet so only your heels rested upon the earth. A sigh escaped your lips and you didn’t even move when the rustling sounded at your back.
A familiar voice spoke your name. Bilbo. “Are you quite alright?”
“Yes, my friend,” you breathed, “so long as you don’t count anything below the knee. Or my hair. Can’t imagine how much dirt and leaves have gotten in it after all that.”
"Well, yes," Bilbo chided, ever the little mother-hen, "you've got to keep it back. Why don't I braid it for you?"
Your heart burst, and not from exertion this time. "You would do that for me?"
"Of course," the hobbit shrugged, "haven't had much practice of it of late, but certainly I can give it a go for you. I understand. I wouldn't want the mess either. Come here."
Thanking him again, you scooted closer to where Bilbo stood, gritting your teeth for the pain of him detangling your hair, only to relax at the gentle touch of his nimble fingers. Eyelids fluttering shut in contentment, you sat as Bilbo worked his magic neatening your hair up and making fresh braids of it for you. Feet still elevated and aching, but less so the longer you sat off of them. When the hobbit pulled back with a quiet, still-focused finished, your first instinct was to reach up around your head, touching the new set of braids with a widening smile.
"And now it shall be free of my face! Truly, thank you, Bilbo!" Pulling him into a quick hug, you vowed to repay him somehow with a teasing final statement. "Since I doubt you want me to braid yours."
"That is quite alright, thank you," he chuckled, "let's head back to camp before Bombur chases us down, eh?”
Camp was nearby, and still sparsely populated as you approached it. Bofur and Bombur were there building a fire, and Thorin stood a ways aside having a conversation with Balin. Dwalin and Gloin sat playing a game with a rock as their table, and Ori sat knitting. The others, you presumed, were hunting, saddling ponies, or else getting attention from Oin. Thinking nothing of it you sat down again, this time near Dwalin and Gloin, asking who was winning and if they were taking bets just to laugh at their responses. Bilbo helped Bofur and Bombur get set up for dinner a few feet off, propping up sticks strong enough to hold the cooking pot.
Sure enough, the rest of the company began trickling in, Oin, Bifur, and Nori first, the latter two with poultices and bandages. You winced. Perhaps you should complain less about your feet. Next up came Dori and Fili, who each carried one half of a felled deer, shot clearly with one of Kili's arrows. The younger prince had a bag in hand, likely having won whatever silly game determined who got the lightest load. Smiling and meeting his eyes, you gave a quick wave, indicating your amusement at the game behind you with your eyes.
Kili smiled back and waved, then swiveled his head away and back again in a double-take. You found yourself frowning as he averted his gaze to help his brother, blinking as you wondered what that was about. All you'd done was say hello. Not even say, really. Did he think you were making fun of the others?
Perhaps it was nothing, but considering your feelings for the prince, it was everything in your mind. Cycling ideas began overtaking your brain like mist. Had he suspected malice of your joke? Had he simply heard something? Why had his expression shifted so? Maybe he was just worried by what he heard.
~
"What did I miss while we were gone?"
At Kili's words, Dwalin simply frowned, peering at him like he'd thoroughly lost his marbles. "What do ya mean, lad?"
"Did...did anything happen?"
"Took Gloin for a right fool on the card table," the older dwarf replied with a smug look, chest puffing and shoulders widening.
"No," the prince shook his head, "not with you, with..."
Despite the way he trailed off, Dwalin gave him a knowing smirk, crossing his tattooed arms. "Ah, I see," he nodded, "not with me, not with me at all. With the lass, eh? Why, she didn’t greet you with a kiss?”
Having an older brother really steeled one to teasing. Much as Kili wanted to fight, to protest and say oi, quit that or I’ll make you, he knew it was exactly the rise Dwalin would’ve wanted to get from him. Beside the other fact that his elder could kick his ass easily.
“‘Course not,” he replied nonchalantly as he could, “I just noticed someone had braided her hair was all.”
Even Dwalin had cause for surprise at that, dark eyebrows shooting up to his metaphorical hairline. “Just since this morning?”
“Yeah,” Kili replied, trying not to sound as deflated as the words made him feel, knocking the air clean out of him now that he’d said them out loud, “thought maybe you’d seen who did it.”
“Hadn’t even crossed my mind, but I think it was like that when she and Bilbo headed back to camp.”
“Bilbo?” He’d lose to a three and a half foot…grocer? “Well now, I’d not have expected that, eh?”
“I can tell ye don’t actually want to laugh, son.”
Sighing, he finally let himself deflate. Bilbo? You and Bilbo?
~
“I hardly see them talk that much. Do you?”
“Not nearly enough to warrant a marriage. Those take time.”
“I know, Fee.”
“Spark.”
“I know.”
“And I thought you two had it. Not even just saying that because you’re my brother. You know I’m honest with you. The only reason those two would have is both feeling like outsiders, and that hardly seems cause to f-”
“Thank you, Fili, yes. Perhaps I was just wrong. Perhaps she could never have loved me after all. She wasn’t my One.”
“Now, brother,” grabbing him by the cheeks with one hand, Fili pulled his younger brother’s gaze to meet his, “not so hasty. Have you talked to either of them yet?”
“Wasn’t ready,” he mumbled, shaking out of the squishing grasp.
“Well, perhaps you should. Knowing is pain, yes, but it is also the thing that keeps us going in the end.”
Kili dropped his gaze thoughtfully before meeting his brother’s eye again, smiling faintly. “Remember our old espionage days? Maybe it’s time we had another mission.”
“Alright,” Fili nodded and smiled, “for old times’ sake.”
~
“Well hello there, Master Burglar.”
“Whatever it is, I won’t fall for it.”
“Now, now, so dry and for what?” Fili wrapped an arm around the hobbit. “I was just wondering how you you were coming along with…a certain member of the company.”
At that, the hobbit’s face crumpled in disgust. By Fili’s reckoning, Master Bilbo seemed barely interested in romance and certainly not with any of the types he currently ran with. He needed someone more doilies and dishcloths and the lot. You may have been the closest to his type, but still far too much of an edge, far too much indeed.
“I beg your pardon?” Bilbo simply replied.
With a conspiratorial wink, Fili leaned in and whispered your name, glancing back to the hobbit’s eyes, which narrowed slightly. Suspicious.
“Uh, w-well I would say,” Bilbo stuttered, shrugging lightly, “well as we could be, all things considered.”
“All things considered?” Fili’s grip tightened a bit. “There are things to be considered?”
“There are plenty of things to be considered!” The burglar shot back. “Why, is she upset with me? Last I heard, she liked the braids and I made her feel much more comfortable. Have I done something today?”
Blue eyes closing to near-slits, Fili released his grip entirely, arm falling back to his side. “Did she ask you to arrange her hair?”
“She complained about it,” Bilbo replied, shimmying in his newfound freedom and using his released arm to slide his pack closer, “so I offered to do something about it. Can’t imagine that is much of an outrage…oh. Oh, good heavens! No! Oh, no. No. She could be my daughter, who on earth sent you over here to…?”
Blonde brows raising, Fili’s head shot back in surprising hard enough to send his mustache braids swinging. “Wait, so you do know about courting braids?”
“Gloin was just telling me all about his,” the hobbit replied, freezing in place even in spite of his awkward, hunched-into-his-pack-hands-deep posture, “neither of us thought a thing about it. Privately I was hoping she and Kili would do whatever it was to get the tension out there, you know?”
Fili did know. He knew, all right.
~
“Psst! Psst! Hoo! Hoo! Caw!”
Kili’s head snapped up at the sound, dark eyes meeting his brother’s fair head popping from the scraggly bushes surrounding camp. One gloved hand waved wild beckoning at the younger prince. Rising from the rock he’d sat down on, one with a strategic view of some conversation between you, Uncle Thorin, and Balin, Kili strode to the edges of camp.
“Reconnaissance successful,” his older brother hissed.
“What?” Jaw dropping, Kili felt his hands leave his chest and clench in surprise. “That was fast. Nothing for me to do?”
“Not true, brother. Not true at all,” Fili smiled, “your part is far more important. You have to go talk to her.”
With a sigh, Kili nodded despite the heavy clunk of his heart in his chest. All the childhood playtimes were nice and all, but at the end of the day he had to be a dwarf about things. Face his fears, just like Uncle Thorin and his father and even Fili.
“You’re right. Though I dread it in my heart, I must speak to her. Even if my love is never known.”
“I wish you the greatest of luck,” Fili patted his shoulder, smiling eagerly, “and trust me. She won’t do a single thing to hurt you. I know it. Alright?”
Another nod. “Alright.”
Inhale, exhale. One step, then another. It was hard sometimes. Putting on the bravado. Fili was always so capable and Uncle had high standards. Not that he shouldn’t, but…it just got easier to act unafraid of everything. In truth, there was much Kili didn’t understand. Much he feared. Perhaps even his own heart, and that was why he had allowed himself to play games with it for so long. No longer, though.
Crunching across the dry campsite ground, he marched up to you as your conversation ended and asked to speak with you, frowning slightly at the nod Balin and Thorin exchanged. Focusing instead on your gaze, the way your eyes were intent in his and the-admittedly quite adorable-way shock bloomed across your face before giving way to a smile and a nod.
“Of course,” you said, and that was that.
How was it that one little smile from you could simultaneously calm Kili's heart and set it leaping like nothing else? There truly was no denying that you were special. Perhaps Bilbo had seen what was so dazzlingly obvious, too. Guess that wasn't too much of a shock.
You both ventured toward the tree line, stopping next to a particularly sturdy trunk. Eagerness was written across your face as you leaned against the smooth bark, encouraging Kili with a smile he couldn't help faintly mirroring even as tears swam in his eyes.
"Are congratulations in order?"
"For me?" You asked, head tilting and hand reaching to your chest. "Forgive me, but what are you asking? I thought maybe I'd upset you last night, but now I really fear it. Or are you teasing me again?"
All thought was scrubbed from Kili's brain at your words, a thick blanket of confusion draping over the prince's mind and furrowing his brows. Is this what Fili meant? Were you not to hurt him because you thought him cross with you? That hurt a bit in and of itself. Perhaps you'd known he would be jealous. But then again, you had greeted him so casually, giving him a cute little wave when he came back...
"Please," he all but begged your name, "the suspense is just killing me. Is that not a courting braid you've been given? I know it is new as of yesterday."
"Is that why you looked so perturbed? Courting...courting braid? Kili," you laughed, "my hair was full of sticks and leaves and all manner of muck, so Bilbo detangled it and got it out of my face for me! Bilbo could be my father!"
Still a bit shaky, but Kili's face surrendered a smile at the teasing smack you gave his upper arm. "Oh, forgive me for being a dwarf," he shot back, "I was hardly the only one who noticed."
"But you were the only one who was jealous," you teased him back, "is that not right?"
Kili could tell by the faltering smirk you gave, by the dart of your beautiful eyes, that you did not truly believe it, but by Mahal, you would when he was done with you.
"Madly," he agreed, eyes boring into yours, "never let anyone but me braid your hair again."
Eyebrows shooting up to your hairline, you peeled yourself from the tree as if to get a closer look. "Kili..."
"I mean it," he implored your name once more, gently taking your shoulders in his hands, "please. This isn't a joke, but if you'd like me to convince you..."
Surging forward, Kili closed the gap between you two, his lips soft against yours and stubble pleasantly tickling against your skin, which shifted as you moved in response to his kiss. Your hands found purchase in his hair, tangling in it and eliciting a sound Kili was too focused on you to be embarrassed about. When you finally pulled away for air, he pulled you back, resting his forehead against yours with a growing smile.
"So, you convinced?"
Your eyes glittered with mirth, joy, mischief...perhaps even love, and Kili knew he should have never doubted you were his One. "So convinced I practically want you to rip out all of Bilbo's work and do it over again yourself."
"You don't have to tell me twice."

Bilbo Baggins x Wife Reader!
“Scary face”
While on the journey to reclaim Erebor Bilbo didn’t come alone but was accompanied by his wife. They traveled for some time until they were ambushed by passing trolls.
After a short and fierce fight the trolls retreated realizing they were losing the small battle. Bilbo jokes around saying “probably because I’m scary.”
“sure.” Thorin says with a grin. Bilbo defends himself “I have a scary face. Don’t I love?”
His wife laughed and grabs his cheeks in one hand “very scary indeed.” She squished his face and he retaliated “I do have a scary face!” She places a kiss on his head “I’m trembling.”
“quit flirting, back into the quest!” Dwalin groans.
Bilbo blushed realizing what just went down happened in Front of his friends. “Sorry!” He yelled, grabbing Y/n’s hand catching up to the group.

Hi! I love your stuff I saw requests were open 😁
Could you Write a fem human reader x thorin who’s shorter than him, and she’s new to the quest meeting the company in Bilbos house, Gandalf already knows her and is like a farther figure.
Thorins a bit skeptical of her at first but those feelings die down as he realises she’s his one. Basically Thorin being a dick at first but warms up to the reader, some confessions are made and some fluffy/little-very tame nsfw stuff occurs when they reach Rivendell?
Thank you!! ☺️
(oh I love this so much! I hope this does your idea justice, there isn't smut in this one since it got quite long by itself, but I'd be happy to make a part 2 where they get to Rivendell if you'd like :) hope you enjoy :D)
(link for part 2!)
An Unexpected Guest (Thorin x female!human!reader)
Thorin watched you from across the campfire and tried to ignore the familiar tugging in his chest. You were too busy laughing alongside Fili and Kili to notice his probing stare, and seeing how easily you'd integrated into the group only made him more perplexed by your presence. He quickly averted his gaze though when he caught the look Balin sent him. The older dwarf simply chuckled and patted him on the shoulder, reminding Thorin of the evening he had met you.
The dwarves had been gathered at Bilbo's house for some time now, and evening had fallen by the time another, relatively quiet, knock sounded at the door. The hobbit almost seemed to be seething at the idea of more people showing up, but this time it was Gandalf who rose to answer.
"It seems our final guest has arrived." At this, Thorin shot him a glare that went unnoticed as Gandalf left the room.
"Gandalf! It's wonderful to see you again."
"Likewise, my dear. Come in, I shall introduce you to the company."
After you had hung your cloak up, you closed the door and followed Gandalf into the room where the dwarves sat. Thorin could only watch in disbelief as you politely thanked Mr Baggins for hosting the event and shook his hand (which appeared to at least partially dispel the hobbit's bad spirits). The wizard had really invited another without his consent - and a human woman at that.
With a gentle hand on your shoulder, Gandalf said, "It is my pleasure to introduce to you Y/n L/n, a student of mine. I have decided that she will accompany you along this journey."
Thorin rose from his chair abruptly, and all eyes turned to him.
"When were you going to tell me about this decision?" His voice was quiet, but his rage was betrayed by his clenched fists. "You do not have the right to-"
"Thorin, I have said she will go with you, and you should be wise to respect that." The wizard's face was dark, and Thorin paused before he reluctantly stepped forward to look at you. "I can assure you that she will be of use. She has studied under me for some time and is a rather excellent navigator, which I suspect will come in handy."
You bowed respectfully. "It is an honour to meet you, Thorin." You made brief eye contact with him as you rose and he felt something in his chest tighten, but he chose to ignore it.
"Don't get in the way," He muttered and returned to the table.
Later in the evening, he found himself stealing glances at you as you chatted merrily with some of the others. He couldn't quite figure you out - you seemed an intelligent young woman, but he couldn't risk compromising the quest, and he didn't trust humans in general, but just maybe there was a small part of him that wanted you to come, and there was this odd pulling feeling deep within him...
His train of thought was interrupted by Balin's hand on his shoulder, and he quickly realized he'd been staring for longer than he intended.
"Your feelings are written on your forehead, laddie."
Thorin cleared his throat and looked anywhere but where you sat. "I feel nothing for her. She's a liability."
Balin chuckled and patted his shoulder. "If you say so."
Balin had moved to sit next to Thorin in the time he was stuck in his own head, and spoke quietly with a smile on his face.
"You can't stare at her forever laddie." The glare he was sent did not deter him. "It's been the same with her since she first arrived, and I've never seen you like this before with any other lass." The two dwarves both looked at you, still teasing Kili over something or other.
Feeling the eyes on you, you looked across the fire and waved shyly with a smile when you saw Thorin watching you. And as much as he tried to resist, he couldn't help but give you a smile in return.
Now that he thought about it, maybe he had warmed up to you a little more than he'd like to admit. Something had drawn him to you and he couldn't quite place why.
"Lad, I haven't seen you smile like that since we started this journey. She makes you happy, and you'd be a fool to deny yourself that."
Thorin sighed. As if he was trying to pretend he wasn't saying it out loud, he murmured, "What if she doesn't feel the same?"
"She does, I'm sure of it. She has the same look in her eyes as you do." Balin put a comforting hand on his knee. "Y/n is your One, Thorin. You know it better than I do."
Oh. That... actually made a lot of sense.
Before he could respond, Kili ran over to them. "Uncle! Can you come and stand next to Y/n? She's making fun of me and you're the only one taller than her!"
Balin laughed and clapped him on the back. "Go on laddie."
Trying to settle his beating heart, Thorin stood and let Kili lead him over to his One (even if she didn't know it yet).
Fili pushed her lightly in Thorin's direction. "She thinks she's better than us because she's two inches taller than me."
"Is that so?" Seeing the slight blush on your cheeks, Thorin realized that Balin may not have been exaggerating, so with a subtle smirk on his face he looked down at you. He was only a few inches taller but it felt like he towered over you in that moment. "I don't appreciate the torment of my nephews, Miss Y/n."
You looked up at him and smiled with a teasing tone. "Well, they started it. I can't take all the blame, your majesty."
If his heart was beating too fast before, he was pretty sure it just stopped completely.
The two of you maintained eye contact for just longer than necessary, before he stepped away and cleared his throat. Fili seemed to have caught on to his uncle's unusual behavior, and with a wink in your direction he subtly directed Kili back over to Balin.
"May..." He paused, still uncertain. "May I speak with you, Y/n? Somewhere a little more private."
"Of course." Mahal, your smile was almost enough for him to forget he was nervous in the first place.
He led you a little further into the woods, just far enough from the group that they couldn't eavesdrop, and took a deep breath.
You smiled anxiously. "You're making me nervous, Thorin. What is it?"
In an uncharacteristically quiet voice, he said, "I think you're my One."
"Your One?"
"I..." He tried to calm the shake in his voice, to no avail. "I suppose you might call it a soulmate."
The blush on your face spread as you processed his words. "O-oh. I see."
"I must apologize for my behavior when we first met. I was skeptical of you, but you have shown yourself to be not only a valued member of the company, but also a caring and wonderful person." Thorin looked up from the ground to meet your eyes. "I have grown fond of you, Y/n, and I feel a connection with you that I have never experienced before. Something has been drawing me towards you every time I see you, and I can't pretend it isn't there anymore."
"Thorin, I-"
"If you do not feel the same then we need never discuss it again, but I-"
He was interrupted with your finger over his lips. You giggled at his confused expression and took his hands. "Thorin, of course I feel the same." You smiled sheepishly. "I was hoping to hide it for a little longer but Kili saw right through me."
"He is more perceptive than he looks," he chuckled, tracing his fingers over yours.
You lifted one hand to softly cup Thorin's cheek. "Either way, I'm glad the feeling is mutual."
Feeling your fingers in his hair when you tugged him down to kiss you, he had never been so glad for Balin's prying in his life.
