Balin: [Retelling the events of Battle of Moria, a great sense of pride and admiration in his tone as he recounts Thorin's noble deeds in war]
The Company: [Looks at Thorin in a new light of awe as he poses regally with his hands clasped behind his back, steadfast and contemplative - a leader, through and through]
Thorin: [Sweating bullets and feeling like he can't move now because all the attention is suddenly on him and tbh all he wanted to do was check out the view but now it would look so stupid if he moved away like it would be so awkward if he turned around and everyone was just staring at him but at least he looks cool?? does bilbo think he looks cool??]
#the hobbit#thilbo#thorin oakenshield#my favorite thing is when balin is summoned from the ether to drop thorin lore while thorin stares in the middle distance#I like to believe Thorin is just too awkward to step in and speak for himself at any given point#so even though he kinda wants to tell bilbo this himself#he's like 'oh ok so now balin's talking ig that's fine'

Idk who needs to hear this, but Thorin's last name (besides Oakenshield) wouldn't be Durin.
The dwarves' last names are all "son of-", and Khuzdul has a suffix specifically for denoting this, "-nul".
For example, Balin and Dwalin's father was Fundin, so in Khuzdul their names are Balin Fundinul and Dwalin Fundinul.
So, Thorin's father is Thrain, meaning his last name is Thrainul
#thorin oakenshield#the hobbit#and honestly given the lack of female characters#in Tolkien's works and lore#i really think nul could be gender neutral#and just mean 'child of'

“The treasure in this mountain does not belong to the people of Laketown. This gold is… ours.”
I’m pretty sure that Thorin says “ours” by meaning him and his kin but the little voice in my head says he means Bilbo.

Bilbo’s honest reaction to that.
#bagginshield#thorin x bilbo#bilbo baggins#thilbo#ah i know the first photo is slightly pixelated shhh#the little voices are so silly#i love the hobbit because there’s so much lore that tolkien created and yet i focus on the silly little guys which are totally in love#yes i’m susceptible to queerbait and this wasn’t even that

You know according to tolkien's legend, the accounts of middle earth came to the author via Hobbits and the manuscripts left behind.
In the eyes of Hobbits elves were is super kind dudes who gave them food and shelter but in context it was only because Bilbo was with Gandalf on a fucking journey to reclaim Erebor and the rest of hobbits were in the main plan to kill literal Satan.
And about the manuscript thing, the relics only survive when they're kept in best condition. Elves were the superior species of middle earth with advance technology so,their version of history could be best preserved.
I'm not saying that all elves where bad or something, What I'm saying is what if the middle earth history has an authorship bias. There are so many instances in which flawed deeds of elves are hidden in flowery language such as Eöl took (unwilling)Aredhel as his wife. How at many instance which you read about Galadriel, in subtext she seems like a power hungry absolutist but her causes are always shown as one of a noble lady fighting for a great cause. Only flawed elves are shown in Silmarillion.
So, what if elves were flawed like the second born and other creatures of Middle earth but they always appeared noble and great due to authorship bias.
And by authorship bias,I don't mean authorship bias by tolkien but if we go according to the myth of middle earth by tolkien, then it's the authorship bias of whoever write the said history of middle earth which tolkien later found and translated. So, it's not Tolkien fault because he's translating what he's given but the fault lies in the hands of whoever wrote the original verses.
Why I'm rambling all these? It's because we were studying about authorship bias and bending of actual events while writing the history. It made of think about the history of middle earth.

howdy :) I'm not really active in the fandom but I enjoy The Hobbit movie, and I'm trying to nail down some lore. Canonically, how much do we know about Thorin and his family's activities during their time in the Blue Mountains?
I would be more than happy to help with that!
Unfortunately, it's not as much as you might have hoped. The years between Smaug's coming to Erebor and the retaking of Erebor are known as the years of exile. In that time, we are told of the deeds of the exiles of Erebor as well as the fates of several members of the line of Durin. During this time, the Battle of Azanulbizar was fought, and Azog was slain by Dain. This had the additional side effect of killing so many orcs that Eriador was nearly completely free of orcs all the way up until Frodo carried the ring. Unfortunately, a LOT of dwarves died as well.
Most of what we do know about Thorin setting his people up in the Blue Mountains can be found at the end of the Return Of The King in Appendix A, in section III: DURIN'S FOLK. The little we do know of that time can be easily accessed in the below. Tolkien Gateway is a very good source of information. Most of it has little to do with Thorin and more with Thrain. The Blue Mountains were the dwarven capital up until Thorin's death. Dain dissolved the capital, moved it to Erebor, and renamed the settlement Thorin's Halls.
#feel free to ask lore questions I love them#LOTR lore#Dwarven lore#use the term canon loosely. Its better regarded as a legendarium because not everything is set in stone#Tolkien liked to change his mind a lot#erebor#thorin oakenshield

I'm having so much Galaxy brain rn. Wasn't bilbo influenced to join the company through a song? Like, thorin played the harp one time and bilbo decided to go on this wondrous adventure? Is that not Fate? Is that not a magic in and of itself?
The whole world of arda is a song. A never ending symphony of music
Isn't the magic of the dwarves the ability to sing to the earth and hear its song in return? Do the elves not sing to the stars and the seas?
So, to me, it makes sense that bilbo baggins an unremarkable little hobbit, son of "The Remarkable Belladonna Took", touched by Fate even from the beginning, was the one who started it all? Was the beginning of the end not the day a baby Bilbo first cried into the air and the world sang back?

When I brewed Asra's backstory, and included the Stag King as the constant romantic torment of her life (for ther past 140 years of her life, more or less), I was deadly set him being a dakr-haired archfey, all broody.
BUT THEN.
I watched "The Hobbit" with my husband yesterday night (part of it anyway), and decided that FUCK IT.
THE STAG KING WILL LOOK *EXACTLY* LIKE THRANDUIL.
He fits perfectly for how I imagine The Stag King: cunty, serving looks for days, a bit of an ass (help me say "a bit"), ethereal because DUH, we are talking archfey here, but all up in his feelings for Asra (also gonna bring those scars he has in play because fml I can never have enough tragic characters in my roster).
If mother and daughter could ever sit and talk for a coffee, they would have stories to share and advices to give to each other lololol.
I like that the main difference between Aranea's and Asra's situation with their two suitors is both parallel and going into different directions at the same time: Aranea sought Mephisto out, she eventually leaned into his charm and power and fully embraced the corruption he brought onto her; Asra, instead NEVER sought the Stag King in the first place, she stumbled into his dreamscape by ACCIDENT (thank goodness for Hiraeth and her cold iron dagger), and while he is trying to actually have her make a pact with him, she is very much like "NOPE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I AM GOOD." (Papa Halsin warned her TIMES AND TIMES AGAIN about the dangers of making pacts with creatures, be them fiends or archfey. He never explained it to her in detail, but that's exactly how she ended up without a mother).
So yeah, this is the Pre-Coffee Morning Bulletin, brought to you by a very sleep-deprived Nemo 😂😂😂
#Nemo Babbles#OC Lore#The Stag King#OC: Asra Silverbough#I am leaning into my not so healthy relationships era lolol#Honestly they are just fun to explore#I wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft pole if they were to happen IRL#but on paper????#GIMME#also yes#THOSE ANTLERS CROWN THAT THRANDUIL WEARS IS WHAT SOLD IT TO ME#and hilariously enough in the movies WHO IS THE ONE PLAYING THORIN?????#Catch Aranea stumbling into one of Asra's dreams in the Dreamscape by mistake with Mephisto at her tail all dressed up as Thorin#and catch him Bitching with the Stag King because yes#ok now I seriously need a coffee#my head is exploding

In the year 2746 of the Third Age, Prince Thorin II was born to Prince Thráin II and his wife in Erebor, in a cave of fireflies.

Obligatory and quite pertinent
#but i will be specific (read: essay incoming)#for the purposes of the poll the worst is tauriel/kili (and tauriel's entire existence tbh) which is part of the key offense:#the movies tried to make the story more epic than it is. unlike lotr the hobbit is a very personal narrative.#it follows one small person with a small part to play in a conflict that (in the grand scheme of the world) is also fairly small.#bilbo isn't a great warrior or a legendary hero or the prophesied savior of middle-earth. he's just what the title says: a hobbit.#that's not to say he's uninteresting or unimportant of course#but it does mean that that he is intentionally rather ordinary and his story more closely resembles a fairy tale rather than an epic legend#(which is fitting since the hobbit was originally a bedtime story for tolkien's children)#consider: bilbo doesn't overcome challenges by being the strongest fighter or the darling of fate or even by just enduring (like frodo)#his most important assets are his wits his friends and his spirit (the ring itself is less important than his plans using it)#let's focus on the friends:#bilbo himself is almost never the one to defeat the company's enemies. that honor goes chiefly to gandalf and bard.#thorin and company are more epic characters than bilbo (given the nature of their quest) but still not on the scale of (eg) aragorn.#the cast of secondary characters in the hobbit is correspondingly smaller than in lotr (and they're generally less powerful)#but most importantly we only see them when and how bilbo sees them. the focus never shifts onto them.#in lotr the narrative tracks different members of the fellowship in turn but the hobbit is specifically bilbo's memoir.#adding more (and more powerful) characters and subplots about them pulls the story away from its essence as bilbo's experience.#he doesn't know much about the world outside the shire yet. he and the readers basically discover it together and the scope is narrow.#trying to turn the hobbit into a grand history comprised of many peoples' story arcs completely undermines the intended experience.#bilbo titles his work “there and back again: a hobbit's journey” and that is exactly what it should be#no more no less.#also having an elf/dwarf relationship is stupid and poorly handled given the lore about the fate of the different races after death.#there. i said it. i could expand on that too but it's getting late here. good night.#the hobbit#tolkien#peter jackson

you made me think ab nerd nick too damn much its concerning. imagine jerking him off while he yaps ab his geeky stuff, stuttering and his words slurring when you squeeze around his tip
ANON…. youre actually my soulmate how did we think of the same thing (nsfw)
nerdy nick who’s far sighted so he regularly wears his glasses that make his eyes look bigger and just adorable. his wardrobe consists of graphic tees and hoodies that fit him awkwardly and his hair is most of the time disheveled.
nerdy nick whose budget goes to cosplay and comic con because those things are expensiveee and his brothers try their hardest to support him by helping him make the costumes (imagine nick unironically doing the anime hands thing around chris and matt and they try not to cringe LMFAOOOOO).
nerdy nick who yaps soooo much about his interests, from lord of the rings lore to his fav doctor from doctor who. i can just IMAGINE him making video essays complaining ab the new live action avatar series and how it doesnt hold up to the original series.
nerdy nick who’s the same sassy and witty guy as we know but he also puts that energy to defend his fav characters on the internet. best believe he has a stan account. many of his tattoos are dedicated to his comfort characters as well.
nerdy nick whose interests look innocent to others but behind closed doors he regularly reads and writes the most sheet gripping, back arching, toe curling smut about his fav fictional men. erwin from aot, thorin from the hobbit, ALL of jujutsu kaisen. he furiously stroked his dick to the thought of getting fucked dumb by nanami.
nerdy nick who acted normal and talks about regular stuff when he first met you but when he gets comfortable with you he immediately starts yapping. you think he’s just the most adorable thing when his eyes light up when talking about all his interests. you don’t even know what he’s talking about but your attention is hooked. nick, however, was used to people pretending to care about what he’s talking about so he stops himself.
“i’m sorry. ugh, i always talk too much, that was weird and boring”
“no, no, it’s fine. so… uruk-hais are bred between orcs and humans?”
nick wanted to suck your dick right then and there.
having sex with anime playing in the background was not rare between you two. one time, you both were watching an episode when you got distracted by how his tongue was peeking out with concentration. you noticed how fat his tongue was and how red his lips were. those same lips were wrapped around your cock not long after that. nick was gagging and moaning around it, his eyes bubbling up with tears streaming down his flushed cheeks as he jerked you off from the base. saliva would drip from his mouth, running down his chin as he struggled to take everything down. he was still wearing those same glasses, sliding down his nose from the sweat. he looks up at you with those big puppy eyes, tears running down his face. the sight makes you groan and shove your dick further into his throat. you thought he looked absolutely beautiful with cum streaks on his glasses.
nerdy nick who sometimes rambles too much and in these times you love teasing him. “come on, baby, tell me more,” you whispered to the back of his ear as he writhed and thrashed on your chest, pants gone and his swollen cock red and dripping as you squeezed the base. “time- time lords have two hearts, so,” he lets out a pathetic whine, “so the doctor never dies, he—mmnghh—they instead regenerate into a new body-AH-“ you squeeze and dug your thumb into his leaking tip. his chest heaves and he pants like a dog. “fu—uck, please, please, please. i wann- i wanna cum, oh please.” you think he deserves it so you quicken your strokes and let him cum. his mouth releasing unintelligible noises while those beautiful blue eyes go cross eyed.
nerdy nick who becomes your person and who you will go to endless comic cons with, watch a new series with, and who eventually will turn you into an even bigger nerd than he is😩🤞🏼
a/n: i wrote this without pause wtf

Already back with another question- what did the dwarf diaspora look like after the fall of Erebor? And what is the likelihood of humans and dwarves interacting during that time? Thorin spent at least a bit of time in Bree, right? Was that typical?
Welcome back! We are told in The Hobbit that Erebor did not grow any food or keep livestock, so they did all of their trading with the men of Dale and, I'm assuming, other regions. Now, given the secretive nature of dwarves, I don't think any humans were allowed into the mountain for any extended periods of time.
Thorin, during the years of exile, did work his craft in towns of men to generate money. For a short time, the dwarves settled around Dunland before moving on to Ered Luin in the Blue Mountains. Now Thorin was in Bree traveling back to Ered Luin when he met Gandalf, who persuaded him to go on the quest. We are not told why he was traveling that way, but in the appendices, Thorin states the fate of the mountain had weighed heavily on his mind of late. That chance meeting was on March 25, T.A 2941. On April 26th of the same year, the dwarves show up at Bilbo's door.
Some dwarves did travel to sell goods or other such tasks. They were considered uncommon but not befalling.
The dwarven diaspora at the time was varied. By the time Khazad-dûm was founded, most of the seven dwarven families had come together and mingled, though some certainly claimed a stronger heritage than others. The Longbeard clan, aka Line of Durin, has the most records.
Below is a Reddit link to my favorite family tree of the dwarves whose lineages we do know. I hope this answered your question!
