Some sketches/wips that ive done in my current sketchbook plus some from my old sketchbook. This is a pretty weird format since i dont post so much all at once but its kinda fun! The last two are doodles of me and my friends as lotr characters with me as the hobbit (ofc)

Durin family sketches

Inside me are two angst filled wolves.

One says Fili is a splitting image of his father, the same eyes, same hair, same smile and gentle features, and everyone tells him how much he looks like his father and Fili nods along and thanks them for their words only to run and lock himself away for hours just staring at his reflection because it’s been so many years that he can’t remember his fathers face.

The other says Fili is a splitting image of his long lost uncle, always the odd one out of the Durin family line with his light colouration and softer features until he wonders the empty halls of Erebor and discovers a torn and scorched portrait of his mother, and two uncles, and finally seeing Frerin and seeing himself reflected in him, and having something inside him snap into place and finally feeling like he belongs.

The poll is done and you have spoken: most of you have the headcanon that Dwarves come of age at the age of 70. That's my headcanon, too, funnily enough.

So let us use some cross-multiplication to put some things into perspective. I use the age of 21 as a benchmark, since that was the age of majority during Tolkien's youth.

Let's find out, how old some of the characters were in human years during certain events.

Thorin was 1,5 years old, when Frerin was born, and about 4 years old, when Dís was born. He was about 7 years old, when Smaug came, and about 16, when he fought in Azanulbizar and lost grandfather, father and brother and became King. He was about 34, when Fíli was born. He died at 58,5 years old.

Frerin was about 3, when his sister was born, about 6, when the Dragon came, and died at about 14 years old in Azanulbizar.

Dís was 3, when Smaug stole Erebor, and about 12, when her brothers fought in Azanulbizar. She was about 30 years old, when her first son was born, and about 54, when she lost her immediate family during the Battle of the Five Armies.

Fíli was 1,5 years old, when his brother was born, and 6, when his cousin Gimli was born. He died before his 25th birthday.

Kíli was 4,5 years old, when Gimli was born, and died at 23 years old.

At the end of the quest, Gimli was about 18 years old, and probably in the beginning angry that he wasn't allowed to come with them, and then utterly heartbroken.

I can only talk about myself, but I think it speaks volumes, that Gimli had to stay home at 18, while Frerin died at 14 in Azanulbizar. I do wonder, if Thorin every questioned, what the hell his grandfather and the other adults were thinking, especially considering that Frerin wasn't the youngest by far (Dáin was 9 years old and Glóin only 5). If that isn't transgenerational trauma and Glóin breaking the circle, then I don't know what to say. I did the math in preparation for a fic and before that I never realized, how young they were during Azanulbizar and, to be honest, I was appalled.

Disclaimer: I just went by vibes and memory, I did absolutely no research in general nor in the fanfic, so if his appearance is inaccurate I apologize.

More details below:

A - I thought Kili had a half up half down style when I started this, while I have since discovered that was false, it is now my head-canon and this part and those braids are in part reference to Kili and/or Dis

Blonde hair is similar to Fili

B- The beard braid is very common in dwarves and not exclusive to Fili, but in spirit it’s a way to connect. He also has a similarly short beard to Fili because I think they are about the same age physically - this is also why I drew him on the younger side

C and D - these are similar to Thorin’s Braids but they differ in the source and they are in Frerin’s “style” - they look like basic braids because that’s all I know how to do right now.

Overall I wanted his hair to be similar to his family (Also bc he died young and wouldn’t have had many opportunities to gain braid-worthy accomplishments)

E- he wears Durin Blue and his clothing is overall very wealthy and rich (with gold stitching on his shirt) as he was still in Princely Clothes when Smaug came

F - he had a green shirt and a little red vest-thing because that’s Bilbo’s colors

G -this is a little headcanon of mine (it might be more popular, I know the tattoo one is) that dwarves, especially royalty, have lots of piercings and gold or other rare metal and jewel embellishments on their body. (But since most dwarves have been on the road so long it’s a luxury)

H- I am a strong strong supporter of the Ugly Thorin head canon and I think Thorin and Frerin got the same sharp nose and silky hair.

everyone talks about gandalf seeing fili and kili in merry and pippin but i'm thinking about thorin seeing himself and frerin in his nephews 😭✋

Bilbo blinks, he had planned on it soon. He had been teetering on the edge of just coming clean for a few days. The stricken faces of Thorin and Dwalin in the corridor had been looping in his mind endlessly and he was at his limit. It was hard to choose a rational moment for the big reveal when all he could think was ‘i can fix this’. In his head he had always assumed Frerin’s reveal would come straight after the dragon, he hadn't been counting on complications.

“Soon.”, he answers honestly.
