One of the earliest examples of Leo’s “I’ll do my own thing to accomplish our goal without discussing it with my team first” is in episode one. It’s super, super quick, and ultimately inconsequential, but it subtly sets up a great precedent that I think is very interesting.
When the boys need to grab the medallion from Splinter without Splinter noticing, Raph, Mikey, and Donnie huddle together with Raph taking the lead in trying to devise a plan to get the mystic device. Meanwhile, Leo slinks away and grabs the device by clocking the situation (by knowing his father well enough to predict his actions - something he does with each family member multiple times in the series) and making a move on his own.
It works out perfectly fine, and is ultimately the best move, and it’s honestly okay that he didn’t consult everyone for something so small when it’s such a non issue to get it, but it nicely sets up how this tends to go in the series, including how it goes in the movie.
To be honest episode one is actually really good at setting up a lot of things for each character in the long run, this is just one example that caught my attention, as small and unassuming as it is.
#rottmnt#rottmnt leo#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#im just ranting at this point feel free to ignore me I’m tired lol#anyway#Leo constantly just goes off and does his own thing#and yeah honestly his own thing often works??? but he alienates his brothers/team in the process#BUT also this isn’t necessarily a one way street#when Leo DOES try to consult his brothers or give his thoughts on matters he’s not really taken seriously#best example here is bug busters where he CONSTANTLY makes his worries and suspicions known only to have them ignored#so it’s almost understandable that he doesn’t often open up about his thought process when it’s easier to just do it#than to try and fail to justify it#after all it almost always works out for him when he does so why not?#and then the movie happens#and that line of thinking doesn’t quite hold up does it?#BUT ON ANOTHER NOTE#like I said episode one is super good at setting characters up#from showing off Donnie’s preference for tech vs magic/mystic#from showing Mikey’s innate talent for mysticism#from showing Raph’s anxieties and how easily they can stack up#there’s more but I’d have to do a closer deep dive on the ep and man am I tired#so off the head rambles it is for now#sorry everyone for my constant spam of Too Many Words into things that are prob Not That Deep#it’s honestly just fun haha#EDIT: bc I saw someone mention it! yeah all the boys have communication issues through the series and it’s super interesting and realistic#Leo in particular stands out to me here because his communication issues are a constant theme that pop up much more often#but each of them experiences this in some form

also more codelyokoposting but I really really dig XANA as a villain. It's not a person with a complex background that led them down the path of evil, it's not a morally grey character you sympathize with but condemn. It's a powerful AI capable of controlling almost anything in the real world. It doesn't have a face or a body, we only know it for its symbol and for the monsters it controls in the virtual world. It's willing not just to kill people through various methods (poisoning, drowning, car crash, fucking space lasers too?) but also Earth as a whole (it tried to blow up a NUCLEAR PLANT and crash two trains with toxic chemicals in them). And we don't even know why it does this, at least not for now. It may not even have a particular reason, just some sort of virus or malware in the form of an AI that seeks nothing but destruction without any goals in mind. This "pure evil" characteristic doesn't come off as childish, like in some children cartoons, it's just kind of scary to think that such an incomprehensible and destructive force exists, almost feels like a natural disaster
#m#code lyoko#that said i wish the rules of what xana can and cant do were a bit more established#like not to be a cinemasins but why doesn't it just hack the factory's elevator to stop the group from entering the room#what's stopping it from attacking the real world non stop#i think it would have been great to have an episode where they go like 'hey xana needs to rest after every attack and also we've put -#some measures to always have access to the computer room just in case it tries to block the entrance or the elevator'#idk something a la death note where you know what they can and cant do with the death note#and as always i wish the action was done better because sometimes it's like. girl you can do that very easily#specially in the virtual world. sometimes there'll be one enemy standing still and no one does nothing and then they get killed and like ?#i'd feel more threatened by xana if the monsters also seemed more threatening#and if its attacks were more grounded in reality? like that one episode where it controls yumi's samurai armor. literally what#the earthquake was also very 'oh it can do that i guess'#i like it when it's stuff like the trains almost crashing with each other#the technologic stuff i think works best. especially because it's something not everyone knows how to fight against

People interpreting this scene as Mac just like, swooning, are missing the beautiful reality that he is being physically restrained from attacking a small child and is giving the kids an absolute death glare throughout
#Which I think is wonderful.#I was just rewatching this it's one of my favorite episodes easily. The Frank moment in this scene is one of his best#WE'RE GONNA GO PAINT YOUR ROOM A COLOR THAT ISN'T STUPID. THEN WE'RE GONNA THROW YOUR TOYS IN THE TRAAASH.#iasip#mac mcdonald

The Yaz attack episode SUCKS because it's basically "campus shooting, but with dinosaurs", so it's really not that Fun.
Like...cowardly scientist gets eaten on his birthday abandoning kids? That's kinda funny.
Guy gets pulled apart by T. rexes while saving our heroes? Sad, yes, but he went out like a hero. A champ. He was pulling a gun! He fought to the end!
Babysitter gets eaten trying to rush her charges to safety through a mass panic? Not funny, very sad, but noble and spectacular despite the horror.
Bunch of mercenaries get torn apart by a freak experiment? Yeah, that's what they get for stealing dinosaurs and selling them.
Guy on a scooter gets chomped in the middle of mayhem? Sad for him, but also funny, especially because you know the guy won a contest for that role (probably won the scooter in-universe, too, making it Ironic).
But three random people killed and/or wounded in an almost-indiscriminate attack on a refuge? That is...not cool. It's Too Real. I Do Not Like It. There is A Thing there.
#this isn't a slight against the show or anything#it's just...that is arguably THE ugliest scene in the whole freaking franchise#no one Deserves It#it's not for the sake of chaos or spectacle#it's just...well...a slaughter on a campus#jurassic world: chaos theory#jwct#chaos theory#like...yaz WATCHES SOMEONE SHE KNOWS GET EATEN#I don't think there's blood on her hands this time#but like...I will argue this#there is no more violent or violating scene in the franchise than that one#I have had this in my drafts but I bought becklespinax today#THE FIGURE IS AWESOME#the design is awesome#I love the fact that they put it in but HOO BOY#rewatching that scene was just...skin-crawling you know?#and I know people are fans of that#but...I'm not#it kinda triggered something in me#because I'm not exaggerating: that's a school shooting with dinosaurs#it's a hit#easily one of the best episodes of the show though#the twist at the end?#BOTH twists?#it's so good#but also IT'S SO BAD#THAT'S JUST WRONG

I will never ever forgive SVTFOE for making the follow up to their most tense, dramatic, world-shattering, stakes-building, emotionally-heightening episode that ended the arc of the entire show’s story thus far and ended with the defeat of the main villain, an episode about Star wanting to smell Marco’s stinky, dirty hoodie and preventing it from being washed so she could continue to do so.
Genuinely what the fuck.
#the show’s gonna make me sob like a baby and then follow it up with that shit#the battle for mewni deserved a more competent follow up#no matter how many issues I have with the battle for mewni#scent of a hoodie is fucking trash#its one of my talking points when im giving examples on how awful the show is#svtfoe#svtfoe salt#svtfoe negativity#star vs the forces of evil#toffee would easily be the best episode of the show if it didn’t end with that damn death scene

Ive seenyou mention wuxia a few times now and i wonder what that is. Would you mind explaining it to me?
not the most qualified person to explain this as i'm not, in fact, from china; but i've read a couple of wuxia so here goes:
wuxia is a genre of fiction from china specifically, about martial artists in ancient china. i don't think a specific time period is like required? obviously some dynasties are more popular but idk how it goes in that front. it just has to be Not Today and probably Too Long Ago. like pre industral revolution i think. again idk if that's a requirement, but most i've seen are from around the same relative murky pre-electricity era.
xianxia is a subgenre of wuxia that's specifically more fantasy-like, and it's not just martial arts, but also spiritual powers and cultivation (which i have no fucking clue how to explain without two hours and three tangents other than chinese magic system. if you've ever heard of chi/qi as an energy, it appears there). so like- genshin is by all accounts a xianxia, it just doesn't use the more common specific xianxia terms like cultivation. some of those are very weird to translate and probably not common for the average non-wuxia reader, so it makes sense why they're going for alternatives.
chongyun and xingqiu and xianyun are very much straight out of a xianxia. xianyun's entire story quest was the closest genshin has gotten to a straight xianxia plot so far. i highly reccomend ashikai's video on unnecessary visions if you want more info on why genshin is a xianxia hahah
cyanide narwhal has some talk of some stuff from xianxia, but that's mostly because well- fucking liyue, that's how it works there. the whole light energy striking down someone who's getting powerful and giving them godhood if they survive the strike is, while not exactly like that, something that happens in some xianxia as well. like the way adepti work in general is just very xianxia. ashikai does a much better job explaining it than i do tbh but yeah
TL;DR: wuxia is chinese martial arts fiction in ancient china, and xianxia is a wuxia subgenre with more magic elements. also genshin is a xianxia
#i was going to recomend some xianxia if you're curious but like#genuinely don't know which one is a good starting point#like i'm tempted to say just dive headfirst into mdzs like most of us did but like#is mdzs the best place to start if you know nothing? unsure#genuinely#given how it's made to feel more lighthearted and formatted more like it's a fucking videogame#svsss might be a good launching pad#but tbf it's been a while since i read it#also it has unskippable sex scenes (i think??) so like- if you don't want to read that you're kind of out of luck there#not that mdzs doesn't have that either but they're not literally Plot Relevant. like the plot does not hinge on their horizontal tango#there's probably a good wuxia to start out there but i can't really remember right now#like mdzs is the easiest to recomend bc it's trial by fire and you're going to come out of the other end knowing like 80% of it all#plus it's not nearly as traumatizing as some of the other options#and it's so easily accessible it's almost funny#like take your pick: novel. live action. animation. audio drama. comic#it's fucking everywhere and the fandom is fucking huge so that's a giant plus#but that doesn't change the fact that idk if you can watch a couple episodes to get a feel for the wuxia genre. like would that work??#so i guess i'll leave that to everyone else to comment with any recomendations if they have a good one#for like an introductory work#or just decide mdzs is just the easiest point of entry. that can always be it. i mean we all made it anyway

Something I like about Leo is that he’s honestly really chill? It’s easy to remember the moments where he’s being obnoxious or excitable but I feel like most of the time he’s incredibly “go with the flow” and has an overall affable demeanor.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt leo#rise leo#Genuinely speaking I feel like said demeanor is incredibly useful for when he has to charm and/or persuade people into listening to him#I have a whole post talking about Leo’s charm and how he consistently gets people to hear him out even if he’s annoyed or upset them#like they’ll still listen to what he has to say in full#his charisma stat is real and utilized quite often in this series I swear he’s not just a loser cringeboy all the time 😭#if he wants to persuade and/or charm then he honestly sooo often does#me listing the 400th reason why Leo grows up to be the worlds best ninja and a good 365 of those reasons are Leo’s various subterfuge skill#Like most episodes where he’s not the main focus (and even many where he is)#he’s a voice of reason who notices things quickly and is often the one taking point to talk down situations#something interesting I found between Leo and Mikey is that#Mikey tells people what they need to hear#Leo tells people what they want to hear#not only out of his own agenda either#when bullhop was wrecking their home leo was the one that negotiated to make the situation go smoother#even if he would have rather bullhop left#meanwhile Mikey is the one who bluntly tells things as it is#small character moment that means a lot to me#Mikey is an honest boy who is upfront about his feelings#Leo prefers to let people make their own decisions he wants them to through steering the convo in that direction#but he is easily cowed by guilt#regardless leo is a people person - he knows how to talk to them and how to manipulate/persuade#and I like that his bros know this and often push him forward to do the talking if they wanna charm someone into doing what they want#I think Leo’s hope speeches are also an example of this - he’s saying what people really want to hear (and often it’s ALSO what they NEED)#the further the series goes on the higher Leo’s inner stress rises and he just keeps that chill aura anyway#there’s a reason!!! he wanted to go to a SPA so badly!!#literally the first thing he does when he gets in is rest#no joke meditation would do him good? like- it’s a Leo thing and I genuinely think rise leo would be no different here

There are many valid reasons to have beef with rid15 but fuck are a lot of the Decepticon / Decepticon adjacent designs pretty
Hell i think i prefer Starscream's rid15 design over his TFP one because he feels more Starscreamesque to me
#transformers#maccadam#transformers rid2015#easily the antagonists are the best part of the show#Vertebreak is damn unique and makes a great mad scientist#Soundwave's s4 design is a cool balance between his tfp one and his g1 one#I've made my opinions on megatronus prime's design clear before#nightstrike makes us ask interesting questions and his episode was lovely#crazybolt is fun as fuck_ especially if you're running with the concept of him being from velocitron like i al#Quillfire's got an interesting psychology to him and is actually quite a nice guy to his allies#pede is pretty#tf rid 2015

Rewatching POF again, and once again I am obsessed with the way Patton says “froggy” when talking about Frogger. Patton saying “froggy” has similar vibes to if Janus ever said “snek” and I freaking love it
#sanders sides#patton sanders#putting others first#one of the best episodes easily#my fav episode is SVS but POF is a very close second#patton being a frog

When Ellie kissed Riley, as soon as she stepped away she looked so scared, almost terrified she had fucked up, you can tell just by looking at her and hearing that little "I'm sorry" she quickly said when Riley didn't showed any reactions at first, but then Riley finally says "For what?" And the fucking relief in Ellie's face, her eyes starting to shine again her posture immediately became more confident and it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, I played the dlc so I knew what was coming but still, it was so well done, so amazing and I'll remember that and talk about it for the rest of my life
#the acting was on point#just everything about this episode was perfect#absolutely everything in my opinion#keeping the important parts of the game#idk about the comics but I've heard they kept a lot from the comics too#all they changed was done beautifully and fits perfectly in the characters storyline#this show is easily one of the best shows I've ever watched#the best show based on the best game#the last of us#the last of us HBO
