Welcome to the Advent Calendar 2024!

Didn't make it to Secret Santa due to lack of time? Don't worry! This year, there will be a complementary event called "Advent Calendar" where you can spread your love for the series without sticking to a schedule!

What is an Advent Calendar? Traditionally, an advent calendar is a special type of calendar that counts down the days until Christmas Day, starting from 1st December.

How do I participate? Simply create a Tumblr or Twitter post with the activity indicated for the day and use the tag #TnBAdvent24, and we'll reblog/retweet it!

Do I have to participate every day? No! The point of this side event is for you to spread your love for the series without the pressure of a schedule like in the Secret Santa! You can participate any day you want: one, two, ten, all of them! Your choice!

Can I participate in the side event if I joined the Secret Santa? Yes! This event is entirely free, so that you can participate at your leisure.

Sometimes, Jungkook feels like the biggest idiot on planet earth. Forgetting about a very important, fast-approaching project deadline happens to be one of those moments.

What sucks more than that is that he was tasked to do something in a medium far from what he usually does (oil pastel), but now that he has very little time to prepare, he also needs something that won’t take him more than 24 hours to complete.

He bites on his lip, pacing around the empty art studio with his hands on his hips. His buddy Eunwoo does a lot of body art, he thinks… he’s always said that it’s pretty snappy. Not that Eunwoo doesn’t spend time on his craft, just that the simpler pieces take significantly less time to do than anything else Jungkook’s tried (with the added benefit of being in a medium wholly different to his go-to).

If he can pull this off, Jungkook will be one step closer to passing his midterm.

“Aish, fuck it,” he mutters, striding across the room to the dirty white plastic table stacked with his art supplies, picking up his phone with a concentrated furrow in his brow as he dials Y/N’s number from his Favorites list before bringing his phone up to his ear, anxiously chewing on his thumb.

She picks up on the fourth ring. “Kook-ah?”

“Y/N.” He automatically smiles at the sound of her voice. “Hey,” he sighs, “sorry for calling you so late—“

“Not at all, Kook. What’s up?”

“Are you busy right now?”

“No…?” She pauses a moment. “Why? Did you need something?”

Jungkook sighs into the other line, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah... Can you come to the studio?”

“The one on-campus?”

“어…”

“Sure. I’ll be there in five.”

“What haven’t you done?” Y/N asks as soon as she steps through the threshold, a teasing smile on her lips.

She throws a plastic bag filled with snacks beneath the table, the plastic inside crinkling on impact as she takes a seat on top.

“A project,” Jungkook laughs, hoping she doesn’t hear its nervous crack.

“How much’s it worth?”

“Like… half my grade.”

“Jungkook—“

“I know. I know, I’m sorry.”

She laughs, not unkindly. “What’re you apologizing to me for? It’s your grade.”

“I know,” he mumbles, running his palm over his face with a sigh. “I don’t know. I don’t like disappointing people.”

He looks at her with a pitiful smile. “You especially…”

Y/N’s brows furrow as she hops off the table to hold his hands, coaxing his gaze up with an encouraging tug. “I’m not disappointed, Kook.”

He nods noncommittally, tonguing at his lip ring while staring at their intertwined hands instead of her soft smile.

“What can I do to help?” she asks then, running her thumb over the back of his tattooed hand.

“Actually,” he sighs, “that’s why I called you.”

“Oh?” she asks, a smirk tugging at her lips.

Jungkook clears his throat and lets go of Y/N’s hands to show her the large tubes of acrylic paint he stole from Eunwoo’s work station. “I was hoping you’d model for me.”

Y/N’s eyes widen to the size of saucers, her lips parting in a surprised o-shape that makes Jungkook’s heart flutter. “M-model? For you?”

He smiles. “Yeah,” he says, “for me. You know how Eunwoo does body art?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, I needed to do something different for this project, and body art seemed like it’d be the fastest and most efficient option, so…” He laughs awkwardly, tapping the tube of yellow paint against his thigh. “Here we are.”

“Doesn’t Eunwoo usually hire models?” Y/N asks.

“Well, yeah, but…” Jungkook shrugs. “I figured you’d be willing to help a guy out.”

Y/N snorts, rolling her eyes with a growing smirk that makes Jungkook’s stomach twist. “You’re lucky you’re right, Wolfie.”

He scrunches his nose at the nickname, nevertheless feeling a massive weight lift off his shoulders when Y/N giggles and punches him in the arm, walking to the centre of the room with a happy smile.

“How do we do this?” she asks.

Jungkook hums thoughtfully, imagining how he’ll transfer the rough sketch he came up with while waiting for Y/N to arrive from the scrappy piece of paper he’d had lying around onto her skin.

“I’m not entirely sure,” he mumbles distractedly, sucking air in through his teeth as he finally settles on going greyscale, lining up the handful of paint tubes from lightest to darkest, turning to the side to grab different sized brushes and a plastic cup of water. “I’ve never done this before.”

“Obviously,” Y/N says, smiling at him when he turns around to give her a deadpan look. “Can I help?” she then asks, standing over his shoulder.

“Uhh…” He turns to her, suppressing his urge to scent her and instead wracks his brain for something for her to do. “Oh! Why don’t you get some of that plastic covering there against the wall and lay it down on the floor for me?”

“Where?” She eagerly grabs a clean roll and struts determinedly to the middle of Jungkook’s work area. “In the middle?”

“Yeah, there’s fine.”

“Why on the floor though? Also, does it matter? The floor’s just as paint-ridden as every other surface in this room.” Y/N laughs as she smooths the plastic crinkles out, ensuring it’s flat against the floor.

“It’s so you don’t get dirty,” Jungkook mutters, squeezing small amounts of paint onto his palette before grabbing his brushes and making his way over to where Y/N is now standing confused in the middle of the room.

“What do you mean?” she asks suspiciously, watching as Jungkook slowly crouches to put down the brushes and palette before going back to the desk to grab his water and set it down alongside his other tools.

“You’ll have to lay down on your stomach,” he says, laughing at the deadpan look she gives him. “What can I say? Your back is the perfect substitute for a canvas.”

Y/N sighs dramatically, getting down on her hands and knees with an old-man groan that makes Jungkook grin.

When Y/N sits back on her haunches and turns to look at him with a slight furrow in her brow, his grin dilutes only a little bit. “What is it?”

“I need to take my shirt off, don’t I?”

Well, shit.

“Uh…” Jungkook, also on his haunches, feels like an idiot as he gapes at her, trying to wrap his head around his current situation. “Well, yeah.”

He has to internally yell at his wolf to shut the fuck up. “You’ll have to take off your bra, too.”

Y/N’s eyes widen, and Jungkook hastily backtracks. “The strap’s gonna get in the way of the painting,” he explains, “so unless you’re fine with me painting over it…”

She bites down on her lip, nervously fiddling with her fingers in a way that makes Jungkook frown. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to, Y/N. If you’re uncomfortable I can just paint over your shirt—“

She pulls a scandalized face. “No! This is my, like” —she tugs at the hem of her shirt, looking down at the Harley Quinn illustration with a furrow in her brow— “second favorite shirt.”

“Which one’s your favorite?” he asks, a little confused.

“The one with your face on it,” Y/N says with an evil grin, cackling when Jungkook deadpans at her.

Of course she’d like that one.

“Seriously though. You don’t have to,” Jungkook reassures her again, his palms flat against his thighs.

Y/N searches his face for a second before shaking her head. “It’s okay,” she says. “I can do it.”

Jungkook checks her face for any sign of hesitation before he nods and turns his head to the side, last-minute turning back to stop her. “Here.”

He tugs his shirt off and lays it down in front of her, spreading it a little before sitting back again. He clears his throat at the way Y/N’s eyes roam over his body, heat crawling up his back at the sensation.

“So you can lay down on it,” he explains hoarsely, clearing his throat again as he turns away, squeezing his eyes shut.

She whispers a thank you under her breath, the room turning dead-silent as Jungkook’s ears hone in on the sound of rustling fabric and a bra-clip being unhooked.

“‘M done, Kook-ah.”

Jungkook takes a deep breath, praying to whatever god is out there to help him be normal about this in ways he knows he’d be otherwise incapable of.

The moment he opens his eyes, all thought of normality flies out his brain like someone opened it up, called it empty and yeeted it across the room.

Y/N’s back is strangely ethereal.

Prominent shoulder blades guide his eyes down her spine, his eyes drinking in the valley of smooth skin like a starved animal.

The only thing that snaps him out of it is the sudden and very intense urge to lick her. (He blames his wolf and refuses to take accountability.)

Shaking his head on right, Jungkook hurries to shuffle closer, his legs tingling from disuse.

“So…” Y/N starts, clearly trying to fill the silence. “What are you painting?”

Jungkook laughs a little, grabbing the thickest brush he has and lathering it in titanium white, shifting close enough for his knees to touch Y/N’s sides. “I dunno if I should tell you.”

“What?” she whines. “Why?”

“Because you’ll make fun of me,” he says pettily, whispering a warning under his breath before setting the tip of his brush to her skin.

Y/N gasps at the sudden cold. Jungkook watches her with a tiny smile, waiting for her to relax her shoulders before he continues lathering paint on in the faint shape of a box.

“Just tell me.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Jungkook~” she whines, pulling a laugh from his throat with barely any effort at all.

He snickers as he shakes his head, finishing up the background before swirling the brush around in his water, grabbing a separate, thinner brush and dipping it in a blob of wet concrete-grey paint. “I’m drawing us.”

“Aww,” she squeals, giggling when Jungkook over dramatically sighs at her antics. “That’s super cute and all, Kook, but aren’t you supposed to be doing something different? You draw portraits of us all the time.”

“I know,” he says, tongue sticking concentratedly out the corner of his mouth. “That’s why I’m drawing us as animals.”

She gasps loudly. “Really!? Are you finally doing another Wolf-Y/N drawing?”

“I should keep that in mind for next time,” he chuckles. “But no, I’m making you a rabbit.”

“Of course you are,” she whispers, though Jungkook can’t help but think he hears a note of fondness in her voice. “So, what? You’re the big bad wolf, then?”

“Since when was I bad?” Jungkook scoffs.

“I dunno. Since you started slacking on your school work.”

“It’s one time!”

“It’s worth half your grade!”

Jungkook pouts, humphing. “Whatever. It’s a cute painting.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. My wolf’s tail’s all curled up ‘round you… you’re all sleepy, ‘n’ stuff,” he mumbles.

Jungkook swears he hears a smile in Y/N’s voice as she says, “That is pretty cute.”

“Yeah…”

Their conversation trails off as Jungkook focuses on his work, gradually laying out the groundwork for the line art.

When he finally starts working on it, though, he mumbles a short apology before swinging a leg over Y/N’s ass, straddling her lower back so he’s centered.

“You okay?” he asks, trying to keep his weight off her back.

“Yeah, ‘m fine.”

“Don’t need a break?”

“I’m fine, Kook. You can keep going.”

Jungkook clears his throat, mentally swatting the dirty thoughts away as he leans down to start on the line art, using his wrist to keep his hand steady as he uses his arm to keep his lines smooth and at an even thickness level.

“Would you have gotten someone else?”

“What?” Jungkook asks, leaning back to get a better view of his piece, but also to try and shake off the feeling of your skin on his palm.

“If I said I couldn’t make it, would you have gotten someone else to model for you?” Y/N asks, trying (and failing) to keep her voice neutral and nonchalant.

“No,” he says. “I don’t think I would have.”

“Why not?” she whispers, her heart beating a little louder in her chest.

Jungkook shrugs even though she can’t see. “I dunno. This feels too… intimate, to do with anyone else,” he admits, leaning back down to finish up the bunny’s line work so he can move on to the smaller details.

She hums softly, the vibration tangible against Jungkook’s hand. He’s been so hyper-focused on every little feel, he barely has time to register what he’s doing before he finds himself with his nose pressed to the back of Y/N’s neck.

“Kook-ah?” she whispers, a shiver running down her spine as Jungkook huffs out against her skin, hot all over and a little dizzy.

“Sorry, bunny,” he mumbles, squeezing his eyes shut. “You smell nice.”

She giggles, and Jungkook relishes in the wave of oxytocin that blasts him right in the face.

“You know, sometimes it’s like you can’t go thirty minutes without doing something to remind me you’re part dog.”

“I’m not a dog,” Jungkook grumbles, unaware of the slight growl in his voice as he takes another whiff of Y/N’s scent, letting it wash over him.

She shivers again, and that seems to be adequate enough for his wolf to let Jungkook pull away again. He mumbles an apology as he brushes her hair over her shoulder, sitting up straight and taking a moment to breathe deeply.

“You smell nice too, by the way.”

Jungkook laughs a little, wiping off a small smudge of paint as he finally stands to grab the digital camera he keeps for the moments when he wants to capture something he’s made for later review, wiping his paint-stained hands down on his pants.

“Is that so?” he teases lightly, telling Y/N to stay still as he stands over her, lining up the shot and taking a couple before he finally gives her the okay.

“You have a really nice smell,” she explains almost defensively, pulling her shirt back on while Jungkook’s back is to her. “You smell like… like rain, and that vanilla laundry detergent you like so much.”

She bends to grab and then throw Jungkook’s shirt at him, smiling as he leans back against the table with a smile of his own.

“I’m glad you think it’s nice,” he says, not bothering to hide the smugness to his tone but hoping she can’t tell with some kind of best friend magic that her liking the way he smells can also be interpreted as a (as she would call it,) “wolfy” thing.

Doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter, he drills to himself.

“Whatever. You took pictures?” She stands next to him.

“Mm. I’ll give you a copy once I get them printed.”

She smiles. “Thanks.”

“‘Course, bunny.”

Rolling her eyes, Y/N stands on the tips of her toes to wrap an arm around Jungkook’s shoulders, guiding him out the door with a strength and determination that surprises him.

“Now,” she says, “let’s get fucked. I know a great place like, down the road from here.”

Upon request, I’ve provided new art prompts for this year’s month of October!! As always, feel free to do all or some of these, pick and choose whichever stands out to you! If you missed a day’s prompt but still wanted to do art for it, absolutely do that and post it whenever you want, no worries whatsoever. It’s all completely laid back and just for fun! I’ve added to this list without consulting old ones, so if I used a repeat idea, it’s possible that I just was interested in seeing more of it again this year!! Hope you all enjoy! If you’re wanting me to check them out at all, you can use the tag, #Sanderstober2023 🎃

Oct. 1st: Give me a spooky or Halloween-y figure and how he looks on Sep. 30th (their off-time, go as comical as you’d like) and then how they look Oct. 1st (traditionally how they are known to look!).

Oct. 2nd: Give me a flower design inspired by a type of candy of your choice!

Oct. 3rd: In celebration of the awesomeness that is Fionna and Cake, I’d love to see you take a character, or characters from your fave series, and give them a multiverse makeover (what they’d look like in a different universe, under different circumstances)

Oct. 4th: Take any historic landmark, and give it an autumn or Halloween-y makeover

Oct. 5th: Since I’ve been on my D&D kick with Roleslaying with Roman, what would any Halloween- or spooky-themed character be in a D&D world? What would be their race? Their class? Their backstory??

Oct. 6th: Google a Random Color Generator and use it to give you three colors. Then use those three colors to create a new Halloween creature or character.

Oct. 7th: Along the lines of Spiderman Noir, take any character you want from some sort of fiction, and depict how they might look like in any other time period!

Oct. 8th: In the spirit of having fun with both Halloween AND Christmas, take a Halloween story/character and draw what they might appear as if they were actually a character talked or sung about in a Christmas story.

Oct. 9th: Take a group of characters from one of your favorite pieces of content and create tarot cards featuring them. Google tarot cards to get inspiration if you need!

Oct. 10th: Take a musical (one that I would suppose wouldn’t already be scary) and create a poster for it as if it were the title of a scary movie

Oct. 11th: Google a Disney character generator, pick out two characters, and create what a mash-up of those two characters would look like!

Oct.12th: Pumpkin spice latte obviously has its spotlight during the fall, but could you come up with another special coffee concoction for another season/holiday of the year?

Oct. 13th: Take a Fall/Halloween concept or character and use it as inspiration for a fashionable outfit

Oct. 14th: As a tribute to Barbenheimer this year, take any character from Barbie or Oppenheimer and depict how they’d appear in the other movie

Oct. 15th: Take the last text you received. Use all or part of it to base a whole movie off of it of any genre, and create a poster for it

Oct. 16th: Take one of the names of your current pet, old pet, or friend’s pet, and use that name as the inspiration for a superhero. What would that superhero look like?

Oct. 17th: Is there a phrase that one of your parents or friend says all the time? Take it and imagine it’s the name of a children’s book. What would that children’s book cover look like?

Oct. 18th: Take a Disney villain, and depict them as a Disney princess

Oct. 19th: Take a Disney Princess and depict them as a Disney villain!

Oct. 20th: Take any Greek god and imagine what their preferred activity might be on an average Fall day.

Oct. 21st: Take a board game (one that I would suppose wouldn’t be scary) and create a poster for it as if it were the title of a scary movie

Oct. 22nd: This is an annual favorite of mine - take take any character(s) from a piece of content of your choice and depict them like a Tim Burton character

Oct. 23rd: Take a famous brand logo (Toyota, Playstation, Campbell’s Soup, Facebook, literally any logo from anything) and design a Pokemon inspired by the logo and color palette! Bonus for naming it and giving it stats!

Oct. 24th: In the spirit AGAIN of having fun with both Halloween AND Christmas, now take a Christmas story/character and draw what they might appear as if they were actually a character talked or sung about in a Halloween story.

Oct. 25th: Another favorite of mine: take any character(s) from a piece of animated content you enjoy, and draw them in the style of another piece of animated content!

Oct. 26th: Go to the latest playlist you were listening to, put it on shuffle, and see what song it plays. Take the title of that song and use it as inspiration for a Halloween/Autumn themed drawing of your choice.

Oct. 27th: Take a favorite pair of characters from a piece of content you enjoy and depict what their matching Halloween costumes would be!

Oct. 28th: [Random event from this past year] … and Zombies!!

Oct. 29th: Every town’s got some local businesses with interesting names (Jerry’s Tire Barn Emporium, stuff like that). If you know of one in your local town, take that name, and imagine it to be the name of a Haunted House. Depict what that location may look like. I wanna learn about some funny local business names.

Oct. 30th: Take one item from your desk/workspace, anything you want. This item is now the inpiration of a brand NEW cryptid (like Sasquatch, Loch Ness, El Chupacabra, just some legendary creature we have yet to find hard evidence of). Depict what this cryptid would be!

Oct. 31st: And, of course, in typical fashion for the big day, give me any character(s) of your choice, from any piece of content, enjoying Halloween in whatever way seems appropriate to them!!

There’s no time limit on the Character Creator; we know crafting the perfect protagonist can take hours. Special shout out to breebunn, who spent 21 whole hours making her Rook and Inquisitor! Synopsis

On a journey to the mysterious Starfall Islands, Sonic and his friends end up being sucked into a digital portal ripped open in the skies. Thrown through time and space, Sonic wakes up alone on a cold and rainy Kronos Island with digital powers installed into his body and a disembodied, lonely voice sounding little more than just his echo. Faced with the mysteries of the digitally weaved islands, the Cyberspace realms made of a patchwork of his memories, Sonic races to find and free his friends, figure out what Eggman was doing on the islands before them, and piece together exactly who used to live on the Starfall Islands.

This rewrite of Sonic Frontiers reimagines and expands upon the themes of grief, love, and the ways in which we cope with finality.

Looking through some of the story boards for Arcane season 1 episode 7 lead me to wonder if the writers/artists took any inspiration from the story of Psyche and Eros

Of course there’s the obvious reference to Eros powers of shooting people in the heart to cause them to fall in love, but then there’s also this piece of concept art for season 2 episode 7, which feels reminiscent of some of the artwork depicting Psyche and Eros ~

As cute and awesome it is that now there’s official art of Ekko and Jinx as fairies, it made me wonder why fairies? Maybe the artists wanted to use dragonflies/butterflies to represent Ekko and Jinx’s metamorphosis throughout the series, or maybe they wanted to draw parallels with Ekko and Jinx’s relationship being fairytale-like, especially with the clothes they’re wearing.

Whatever the case is, I can’t help but wonder if the tale of Psyche and Eros was utilized, as that myth if often said to be the blueprint for other romance fairytales (I.E. Beauty and the Beast).

I also think it’s interesting how Ekko parallels Psyche in how he ends up going through a myriad of difficulties so he could be with his Jinx again, and how Jinx parallels Eros in how they’re both mischievous and feared beings.

Just to emphasize how much of a left turn “Saw X” is for the franchise, you need to consider what “Saw” is to most people. Aside from the first movie which has been mostly re-evaluated as a decent thriller that was more focused on story than gore, the series has been criticized for being an excuse to show off people being mutilated in the worst ways possible. The series has been credited as a “pioneer” in the torture porn label, which you can’t really argue due to it being mostly true for the sequels. The series has also never been a critical darling (all the movies before X have all had negative Rotten Tomatoes scores), which I think contributed to the series’ image as low-grade torture porn.

As the story got more convoluted and frustrating, the more the series seemed to focus on killing people. For me, I started noticing this when the 4th movie featured a trap that didn’t really have a purpose in the story (the mausoleum trap with Art Blank). That trap felt more like the makers wanted to do a really brutal scene and didn’t care if it made sense.

Main characters would only last one movie. It was pretty much useless getting attached to any protagonist since they usually got axed off by the end of the movie. Because protagonists kept getting killed off, further sequels tended to focus on characters who played more minor roles. Rigg is probably the best example of this since I’m pretty sure no one was expecting this character to be a protagonist. Point I’m making here is that character development was essentially useless since protagonists were just glorified cannon fodder.

Then there’s the unfortunate existence of “Saw 3D”, which made the series look like it was just trend-chasing.

The series died for a few years. It then tried to come back with “Jigsaw” and “Spiral”, which the makers claimed to be a reinvention of the series that would renew interest in the franchise. Instead, they were both just sorta lackluster and didn’t really convince people that Saw was worth revisiting.

So, “Saw X” clearly had an uphill battle. But lo and behold, the movie gets released and ends up being:

1) A surprisingly good character piece centered around Jigsaw and Amanda. Yes, there are still death traps and gore, but the focus on story and character development is definitely felt more in this installment.

2) The only “Saw” movie with a positive Rotten Tomatoes score. In general, seeing positive critical reception about a “Saw” movie is crazy to me.

3) An actual, successful reinvention of the franchise since it’s centered around Jigsaw instead of having him be the mastermind in the background. Just by being a straightforward thriller instead of a convoluted horror-mystery is enough to distinguish this from the other 9 movies.

Kudos to “Saw”. This is why in one of my posts last night, I called it one of the greatest redemption arcs I’ve seen in horror. It’s the TENTH installment in a series that’s been critically savaged its entire lifetime, it shouldn’t have succeeded. But here we are.

Hey there, I really liked Dragonfall and I've seen you tell people on here that the best way to help support the book is to leave a review! I'm really new to giving book reviews and was wondering if there were specific places to review that would help the most. I have recommended it to my friends, but I don't really have any social media reach. Dragonfall made a setting that made it feel like somewhere I could actually belong and I love the slow gradual pace of it and all the little details I give. But yes, best places to give a book review for Dragonfall?

Hello, thanks for asking. Helpful places: - Retailer websites like Amazon, B&N, Waterstones, Bookshop.org, Audible, places like that. - Review websites like Goodreads, Fable, or Storygraph, romance.io Obviously, posting all those places would be a lot, so the top 3 most helpful are probably Amazon, Goodreads, and Storygraph.

In its initial release, I kept pitching it as 'sexy dragons' and certain retailers also sometimes positioned it as a fast-paced, spicy romantasy. But I don't think it aligns enough with romantasy subgenre expectations, in retrospect. I've since tried flagging that it's more epic fantasy with romance, experimental narrative positions, etc, but it's still hard to know how to best help it find its readers. It's a fundamentally weird thing, to release a piece of art, which is such a vulnerable act, and have it graded on a 5 star scale. To feel like the average rating is somehow its final grade, even though that's not how art works, especially in our current culture war, and negative reviews can still convince readers to pick up a book, too. But I've always written to connect, and I struggled with feeling misunderstood for most of 2023 and a good chunk of 2024. I know an author's personal social media doesn't really move the needle, per se, but it is also getting harder to get the word out about my books directly. And as soon as you put in the work to establish a platform and wrangle with the whims of algorithms, it gets banned (TikTok) or becomes unsafe (Twitter, Meta, and even here on Tumblr). I don't look at reviews directly anymore, but sometimes a friend goes in and sends me some anonymised nice quotes. It's a gift when I get a reader message. It bolsters me because I know there are those out there who get what I'm trying to do without me having to compromise my voice or the way I like to tell stories. People can be so very loud with their hatred, it sometimes risks drowning out the love.

I'm feeling a lot better here in 2025, which is why I'm sharing this. There's so much to be grateful for and to look forward to, both for the Dragon Scales series and re-releasing my debut series later in the year. And I am really happy (and relieved) that so far, those who liked Dragonfall seem to love Emberclaw, too.

TLDR: Word of mouth, online or offline, is magic. Readers have the power to keep series alive.

Summary: After the accident, Din is not able to work for a while. He will lose the opportunity at the museum if he can't deliver the pieces. Would you step up and help him?

A/N: Their relationship is finally blooming folks! Don't worry, we'll get there. Even to the smut! For the moment, I hope you enjoy this shorter chapter. Writing has been a big distraction from the horror of the terrible catastrophe in my city Valencia. I'm so touched because Pedro himself used his platform to speak about us. He's just the best.

Karga visited the next day of the accident with the kid.

“Are those flowers for me, Grogu?” Din asked, his face softened at the sight of his son hiding behind a massive bouquet.

“He chose ‘em for you!” Karga explained, hugging you as a greeting. “How’re you doing sweetheart?�� he asked leaving his hand on your shoulder. 

From the corner of your eye, you saw how the toddler climbed the bed to be embraced by his dad.

“Thank you, kid, I’m sorry I couldn’t make it last night.” Din caressed his son’s little head. “Did you have fun at your sleepover with Winta?”

Grogu chirped and started signing some words. Your eyes opened in awe. So the little one could speak sign language! You made a mental note to learn the most common words.

“You haven’t been home yet, have you sweetheart,” of course Karga noticed at the mess your hair was and the wrinkled clothes. “Go home, have a shower, I’ll stay with him.”

You doubted for a moment, but after all your back was aching from sleeping on the couch and you could use a hot shower. Din was in good hands with Karga.

“Okay, but I’ll come back in the evening.” You couldn’t allow Din to eat the horrible hospital food, so you thought of bringing him some frozen homemade soup you had back in your place.

You said goodbye to your boss and kissed Grogu’s head.

“Karga,” you whispered before leaving, “don’t be too hard on him.” With the approaching deadline, his injury would be a big nuisance. 

Greef looked surprised but smirked knowingly. “You really care about him, don’t you?”

For a moment you panicked, suspecting Karga knew of your little crush. Were you that obvious? Probably, yes. You had stayed next to him like a lost puppy. You shook your head and left the room, leaving him wandering.

After a much-needed shower, you returned to the hospital with a soup container.

It was already dark and the hospital seemed quiet. Din was on the 4th floor, so you had to share an awkward silence with some of the personnel.

“Hi, I’m back,” you closed the door behind you and left the container on the table. He was alone, it looked like Karga and Grogu had left. Your boss didn’t look at you. He seemed deep in thought, reading glasses on the tip of his nose. You recognised the notebook he used for taking notes. “Are you really working right now Din?”

When he heard his name, he finally lifted his gaze. His expression was gloomy behind the glasses.

“Why are you here?” his raspy voice froze you. His question hit like an ice arrow.

Din removed his reading glasses, leaving them on the bedside table.

“I had some leftover soup at home and…” your cheeks started to feel warm.

“Why are you really here.” His gaze looked hard as beskar. For a moment you panicked wondering if he knew about your crush. “Are you that afraid of losing your job? You don’t have to make extra hours playin’ nurse y’know.”

Your eyes started to moisten. You didn’t understand why he was being so cruel to you.

“Is it that hard to believe that I genuinely care for you?” you said on the verge of tears. “I was so scared when I found you in the bathroom, Din”

He clenched his jaw and looked away. “I’m ok now. I’m sorry you had to see that.”

“You’re not ok. And you can tell me what’s in your mind, y’know.” You’d want to tell him a lot of things, that he could count on you, that you weren’t only his employee. But he was upset and you, a coward.

You wiped your tears and he pinched his nose.

“We’re done. I can’t reach the deadline with..this,” he explained staring angrily at his wounded arm. “And without the money from the museum, I won’t be able to pay you.” His tone was sour, defeated.

You sat on the bed next to him. Probably telling him that you’d stay by his side even if he didn’t pay you wasn’t a good idea. “Din, let me help you. I know how to use the tools. I’ll be your hands.”

“That’s not enough,” he replied in a stern tone, but you were determined.

“Let me show you how I work and then you can decide if it’s up to your standards.” It had been a while since you’d sculpted, but you were confident in your skills.

He lifted a brow. “I’d need to see that  before”, he said after a while, “and I have one condition.”

“Of course, tell me.” You tried to hide your excitement, but couldn’t wait to go to the workshop.

“If you finally help me, you name will appear next to mine.”

“Din.” Your mouth was so open from the surprise you feared that you looked like a fish.

“You’ll be doing all the manual labour, I won’t accept anything else.”

“Lots of sculptors don’t make their own pieces, just the design”, you complained, not finding acceptable to be credited.

“Not Mandalorian ones, it won’t be honourable.”

You sighed but he was right about that. You had forgotten how important authorship was in Mandalorian culture. You thought about it.  It would be like Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen. The only difference would be that you weren’t an artist. Or married to him.

In fact, you were no one, just a broke PhD student and his part-time employee. But right now, helping Din was more important than your self-doubt.

“Okay, it’s a deal.” Din’s gaze softened at your positive response. “We’ll make it, Din.” Your hand was so close to his on the duvet and you felt the sudden need to hold it. But even though you felt drawn to him, you had to know your place. He was your boss.

“Thank you,” his gratitude took you by surprise, “you really have to like this job at this point if you’re willing to put up with this shit show.”

He didn’t have an idea.

The next day Din asked you to bring his sketches to start working together. He explained every sculpture he had planned for the show and you worked on the blueprints side by side. When he was discharged from the hospital you were there. In fact, you hadn’t left his side. Both of you went directly to the studio with a clear plan of action. 

Upon arriving at the workshop, it felt like a month had passed, even though Din was in the hospital only for a few days. He walked to the wardrobe where he had his sculpting gear and handed you an apron and a welding mask.

“You’ll need security boots but I don’t think I have your size… I can grab you a pair from the store when we close.”

He asked for your shoe size and you answered, grateful.

On your first day, he observed you as your shadow, analysing every micro-movement of your hands, correcting you here and there.

You cut metal, welded and even started preparing a mold.

“Is it alright like this?” It had been a while since you practised your craft and you weren’t so sure about your modelling skills.

Din got so close to you that you could smell his after-shave.

“You have magic hands, sparks.” You chuckled at his comment, he started calling you that after a big spark had surprised you while welding, making you squeak.

Contrary to what you had expected, Din wasn’t being grumpy at all. He looked almost like he was enjoying working together. Of course, he grew frustrated here and there when he couldn’t use his right hand, but he was a good teacher and you followed his instructions closely.

The first evening it got so late that Din ordered takeaway for you two. And the next ones, it became a habit. Not that you were complaining, you treasured those moments spent next to him relaxing together. Both of you enjoyed all kinds of cuisines and it was a pleasure to share the joy of a delicious meal.

“Did you travel a lot with the army,” you asked one night, looking at how he enjoyed food from different countries the same.

“Yeah, I was part of a specialised team so we flew where we were needed.”

Din hadn’t spoken a lot of his army days and you had a lot of questions, but didn’t want to overwhelm him.

“Do you have a favourite place you’ve been posted?’” Din stopped eating and looked deep in thought for a moment.

“Sorgan,” he said sounding sure, “almost settled there, Grogu loved it. Peaceful place.”

You didn’t know about Sorgan but you’d make a quick search about it later.

“And you? How are you enjoying your stay in Nevarro?” It was unusual for him to ask questions about your personal life, so you were startled.

“I didn’t expect to but…I’m loving it”, you confessed. “The barren lava flats, the glow of the magma…and the town is so lively. It’s so beautiful in its own quiet way.”

You noticed Din was smiling. It looked like he was in a good mood that day. “Have you travelled to the North?” he took a bite of his burrito, sauce staining his moustache.

“Not yet, I haven’t been y’know…available precisely.” You said it in a light tone, but the playfulness in the air died and you saw the guilt in his big eyes. He left the burrito on the plate.

“Look, I’m so sorry I dragged you into this…”, he started, but you put your hand over his and he fell silent. 

“Din, you’ve given me the opportunity of my life, don’t be sorry please.” You couldn’t talk about your deeper motive to stay next to his side. You’d be mortified if he knew how fast your heartbeat raced every day before work.

He responded with a lopsided smile. Your hand felt like burning on top of his. He didn’t remove his.

“I’m sure you don’t need me to make your own path, sparks.”

Only if he knew how badly you needed him.

“I might not need you, but the way is much more enjoyable next to you.” You bit your lip immediately, regretting your words. Mortified, you were sure you had shown too much of your feelings for him.

He shifted in his seat and, to your surprise, turned his hand upwards, wrapping your smaller palm in his. It was rough and calloused, even though he always wore gloves to work.

“My life is more enjoyable since you’re here too”, he replied in that low baritone of his. You looked at your intertwined hands and then at his eyes. They were full of softness,  of gratitude. You breathed sharply, unable to process the implications of his words.

“I like to be helpful,” you said, with a tiny voice.

“Is that so.” His dark orbs were directly staring at your soul, there was no way out.

“There’s sauce on your moustache,” you tried to deflect, incapable of bearing the intensity of the moment.

“Where?”

Your trembling hand lifted to meet his face.

“Here.” With your thumb, you grazed his upper lip. “It’s done.”

You noticed he had closed his eyes. His left hand hadn’t left yours. He exhaled and opened his eyes again.

“Thank you,” and that time, he didn’t call you sparks but your name and you admired how each syllable formed in his perfect lips. You were still staring and hadn’t noticed. 

Suddenly you got up. “I should probably be leaving for the last bus.” You picked up your dish and the empty package of nachos. “Do you need anything else before I go?”

Din sighed and looked at his burrito, unable to meet your gaze. “No, it’s ok, I’ll do the dishes,” he responded when he heard the faucet of the kitchenette opening.

“Alright then, see you tomorrow Din.” Your lovely face disappeared through the door and he was left alone with his thoughts.

Had he read the room wrong? Maybe all your eagerness to help him was really only because he was your boss and your livelihood depended on the salary. But no, you looked genuine saying that you cared. It could be that you only thought of him as a friend. 

He felt awful. It had been a long time since he had this feeling. But what was he expecting? You were his employee and ten years younger. It was wrong. The next day, he’d say sorry for making you uncomfortable and he’d keep his distance, although every cell on his body screamed to get closer to you. 

The first day when he saw you welding, you looked so sexy and powerful. And your soldering was immaculate. He asked about where you’d learnt.

“Junkyard”, you had answered, and the response left him impressed. How a beautiful woman like you could come from there? He timidly asked a bit more about it, and you told the story of how your dad worked for years in his junkyard business only to finally open the garage of his dreams, how you played with the spare parts and came up with your creations. “I’ll show you some one day,” you had said, but he knew you were shy about your art.

You had arrived at his life like a guardian angel, improving everything you touched. Even him. He was less grumpy around you, all his friends had noticed. His business ran smoother, and his life too. You got on well with Grogu and he loved watching you play with him in the backyard. He won’t admit to himself he was harbouring some hopes.

But you had rejected him. It was ok. He could have you in his life in a different way. It had worked with Omera after he rejected her, why not with you? You were both adults after all. Although those warm feelings about you won’t disappear in a blink, especially being so close every day.

Din sighed again, thinking about how hard his winter was going to be.

I feel like a lot of people do not know how to accept an imperfect piece of media and enjoy it for the things it does manage to do right.

I've gotten this impression from other fandoms in the last few years and I'm getting it from a lot of the criticism of Veilguard - that it's so "shallow" or "simple" as to be not even worth playing. That it's a terrible DA game, etc. I do see where the "simple" bit is coming from, but personally I had lower expectations than what we got.

It was fun. I liked the new characters. I thought most of the voice-acting/dialogue options sounded more natural than a lot of it does in Inquisition. I loved the big plot reveals that tie back to the previous games (the origins of the elves, the blight, and the archdemons). It made me want to replay the whole series just to see it in a new light.

I do wish the world felt more... filled in, like it does in Inq, and I wish we got more little easter eggs that differed based on choices we made in previous games. And no, I don't know why they glossed over the dark side of the Antivan Crows or why they didn't address slavery in Tevinter, but after ten years and all the bullshit Bioware has done/been through, I was barely expecting a 4th Dragon Age to happen at all.

The game could have been a lot worse.

(I mean, seeing as my last big fandom obsession was Star Wars, it could have been Rise of Skywalker levels of bad and I wouldn't have been surprised. But it wasn't.)

I know you want that perfect piece of media and you don't want me to tell you to just use your own imagination to fill in the gaps or correct the shitty parts, but you have to remember that the creators who try to give us those perfect stories are working under the constraints of "what's going to make the most money", because capitalism fucking sucks and ruins art.

But you can still enjoy a thing for what it's trying to be. You have to be able to, really, if you don't want to be bitter at almost every mainstream piece of fiction you partake of.

In wake of recent events and allegations against Neil Gaiman, I would like to release a statement that I know no one asked for. Because I have not been doing very well as of late, and this was the cherry on the shit sundae.

I hope you all understand that, in doing so, I do not mean to take away any attention from the victims. I just have to get this off my chest and clear the air I feel is polluted at the moment.

Here's my long-winded timeline of my interaction with Gaiman's work. Underneath will be my statement on these allegations and what I will be doing moving forward.

I first got into Neil Gaiman's work in June-July of 2021, around my birthday, although I had seen some of his work unknowingly over the years.

I will never forget the first time I watched Good Omens, and I will never forget the joy it made me feel from the first few frames. I finished the show soon after. The message of the beauty in individuality and the inherent neutrality of humanity made me feel hopeful for the first time in a while.

I read the book in October 2021 and was officially hooked. I started engaging in the fandom and found a place online where I felt wholly accepted. I made fanart, read/wrote fanworks, etc.

I then expanded my Gaiman-Verse knowledge in April 2022 and began reading American Gods, Anansi Boys, Trigger Warning, etc...and found great inspiration and solace in these works as well.

On August 5th, 2022, I watched Sandman the morning it released on Netflix, beyond excited, and then bought one of the large books with the first few comics complied inside after finishing the show.

My love for The Sandman universe only grew, and I gained new outlooks on life inside the character's words and actions. Death of The Endless and Hob Gadling were two characters that helped me better understand how to truly appreciate the world around me and the time I am blessed to have in it.

I received the full collection of The Sandman comics for Christmas 2022 and nearly cried with elation. I read through them like a beast and was given more of the extended works in the series (like Death's solo comic) later that same holiday. I was also given The Ocean At The End Of The Lane, and finished it in two days flat. I loved Mrs. Hempstock and her words on humanity.

As time passed, my passion for Gaiman's literature/media didn't waver.

I started dating my partner on June 1st, 2023, and Gaiman's work was part of what helped us bond, in addition to our already-lovely chemistry.

The EVERY kiss spoiler leaked and sobbed with excitement, lol.

Good Omens S2 was set to be released a few days after my birthday. However, I was very sick on my birthday and was rather miserable.

My parents went out of their way to make me Good Omens cupcakes in secret, and it was one of my best birthdays, purely because my father put in the effort to design them, despite my never letting him watch the show (which has since been amended).

That Christmas, I was given quite a bit of Good Omens and Sandman merchandise and started growing my collection of copies of Good Omens.

On April 25th, 2024, I watched Dead Boy Detectives the day it released, having been excited for it since November 2023, and found another media in the Gaiman-Verse that I adored and saw myself in.

Flash forward to tonight, July 4th, 2024, and I am devastated.

I spent the majority of my teen years consuming Gaiman's content and engaging in the fandoms. During the time, I found true happiness and felt comfortable in my identity, and I refuse to lie and say my self-discovery was not aided by the media he created.

I know this is not about me, but about the victims, and I know the allegations have been brought to light by many shady news sources, but I must finish my piece with this:

When J.K Rowling exposed herself as a TERF, I had not realized I was queer yet, but I was still deeply disturbed for reasons unknown to me. I separated the art from the artist, as I had loved Harry Potter since I was seven, and it was a way my mother and I bonded during hard times. It also helped me get through the height of quarantine and the horrors of puberty.

When I discovered Gaiman's work and the fandoms his work's inspired, I felt relieved: here was a white cishet person who cared for minorities and who created media for minorities.

If the allegations are true (which they likely are), it turns out my hero doesn't deserve his cape.

I will do as I did with J.K Rowling, with a much heavier heart. The fans deserve the joy and inclusion Gaiman's work has created, even if he himself is vile. I will continue to consume his work indirectly and in no support to him.

I encourage everyone in the fandom to stay calm during this time.

It is okay to be angry, sad, and confused. However, it is not okay to ignore the allegations altogether or the trauma these women have experienced at the hands of Gaiman.

This fandom is a safe space for many people, and I beg that it will remain that way.

I send out much love to the women who were hurt, and I hope you both find contentment.
