“... Sorry. This one’s no good either.”
Sighing dejectedly, you sink into your seat.
You can’t tell if your companion’s disappointed. He maintains a neutral countenance, betraying nothing of his inner thoughts. Still, you study him, awaiting some visual indication before moving the conversation forward. He must sense your intentions, for he catches your gaze and smiles.
“Should we call it a day? You look tired.”
“The hell? Isn’t it considered taboo to tell a lady she looks tired?” You grumble. “And here I thought you were Casanova incarnate. You’ve got to work on your charisma stats.”
Chrollo shrugs halfheartedly. “What point is there if you’re immune to my many charms?”
“Let’s be real — ‘many’ is overdoing it, a little humility won’t hurt. I commend your budding self-awareness, though. At least we’ve made progress on that front.”
He hums, offering no rebuttal. You realize that you’ve perked back up, reinvigorated by his goading. He certainly knows how to get people going. Among his defining features, that’s one of the first you recognized; his uncanny way of orchestrating favorable outcomes.
Sipping your preferred warm beverage, you canvass your surroundings.
The café’s less crowded than when you came in. There are still a few students typing away on their laptops while consuming a concerning amount of caffeine. In the corner sits an elderly couple, whose order you overheard by virtue of the volume it was placed at — “Give me a regular coffee. Straight black, none of that ‘appaccino, grand venti’ nonsense. Decaf for my wife.”
(You prayed for the barista’s sanity when he tried explaining the different ways ‘straight black’ could come).
“... I am losing my touch, aren’t I?” Chrollo murmurs. You snap your head in his direction, having temporarily forgotten his existence. “You prefer older men?”
You almost choke mid-sip. “Pleh…! That’s it, I’m retiring, good luck sorting your issues out.”
“You don’t mean that.”
“How I wish you were wrong,” you deadpan. Lifting his phone off the table, you scroll through its contents. There’s nothing new to look at. “An exorcist, huh? You’re positive that’s a real thing?”
“They exist. They’re just rare, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.”
“I blame the Protestant Reformation.”
The skin beneath his eyes wrinkles. “... Cute.”
His compliment makes you frown.
“Quit it with the flattery, already.”
“Flattery implies a degree of insincerity, no?” He challenges. “You of all people should know when I’m being genuine.”
“You make it sound like I’m a walking polygraph.”
His lips part and close as he considers his response. “That isn’t how I view you.”
This guy’s clever with his word choice, you think. Too clever.
Disliking where this conversation might go, you redirect.
“This ‘Hunter’ site you’ve been using… is there any way for me to access it?”
“Feeling a bit impatient, are we?”
There’s a patronizing lilt to this tone that has you inhaling sharply. Closing your eyes, you ball your hands into fists, willing your agitated mind to relax. Your goal feels so close. This future you never believed possible dangles above your head, only to recede as if you were Tantalus whenever you grasp for it. Needling Chrollo won’t get you any closer, but at least it gives you something to do, mimicking progress.
“The Hunter site has various measures in place to prevent account sharing. You don’t want to end up on their radar,” Chrollo retrieves his phone and tucks it into his coat’s pocket. “While your enthusiasm’s admirable, I suggest you leave this part to me.”
You swallow thickly. “... Right.”
“Are you upset?”
“No, I’m not,” you rest your hands on your lap. “Just, y’know. Reminded that we’re from two different worlds.”
Outside the café’s windows, individuals from all walks of life bustle about. Some are on their phones, others chatting with friends, or holding their partner’s hands. It’s a picturesque display of normalcy. They’re likely thinking about what to have for dinner, when to set their alarm for the following day, if they can squeeze out of plans they halfheartedly agreed to over the weekend; you know this because you aspire to live the same way.
“You’re closer to mine than you think.”
A fervent disagreement blazes then turns to ash on your tongue. There’s an unidentifiable quality to his stare — neither kind nor outright malicious — almost clinical in its effort to elicit a reaction. You stir in your seat. Despite your time together, he’s as much an enigma as he’d been upon your first meeting. Charming and courteous, yet lacking genuine warmth, like a faux candle.
“Do you get some kick out of riling me up?”
“Maybe a little,” he admits. “Your expressive nature is endearing. I can’t help myself.”
His words resonate with such clarity that you can’t help but wish he’d been a little dishonest.
“I’m not a toy for you to entertain yourself with.”
His smile makes you squirm.
“I know you aren’t.”
“Then what—” you cut yourself off, fearing what might occur if you continue your original line of questioning. “Man, you’re exhausting to deal with. Has anyone ever told you that you have an awful personality?”
“Few get to be around me enough to comment on its quality.”
“I’m counting down the days until I’m no longer a member of that inner circle.”
Before Chrollo can respond, his phone audibly vibrates. Newfound excitement overwhelms you at the sound. He glances at the notification and nods, confirming your speculation. He places it in your eager hands. While you prepare, he steeples his fingers and leans forward, intrigued as always with your work.
You relax your breathing. This entire process is based on intuition, chasing after faint sensations until your desired outcome manifests. A pliable force thrums through you — what Chrollo refers to as ‘aura’ — awakening from its dormant state. Mindful of your public surroundings, you keep your dominant hand beneath the table. Where there was once nothing, a three-dimensional object rests snugly against your palm. Buttons of varying utility jut outward along its perimeter. This small item, shaped like a cassette recorder, stirs antipathy in your heart.
Holding down rewind, the cassette whirrs to life. You prepare to record the latest audio note sent in for analysis.
Instant Replay (One More Time!).
These past few months have seen your ability frequently leveraged. It was your personal conviction to refuse its use, lest paranoia eat away at you. However, freedom from this bondage necessitates further entanglement. You’ve parted with your long-standing morals, primed to pick through the syllables of others for your own purposes.
Right and wrong no longer concern you.
All you care about is surrendering this loathsome ability to the man sitting across the table.
-
The night air is unforgiving in its chill. It infiltrates your layers of clothing with laughable ease, seeping into your marrow and demanding that you shiver as recompense. Gritting your teeth, you pick up your pace, cursing the parking garage’s elevator for being out of order. You knew parking at your friend’s apartment complex was sparse, but this is a new record.
The heels of your shoes click against the concrete staircase as you rapidly ascend. A pale, yellowish hue illuminates your path, the lights occasionally flickering. The moon must be feeling shy tonight, for it hides behind thick, stationary clouds, refusing the world its silvery guidance.
Upon arriving on the third floor, you hear an ominous crackle in the distance.
The consequences are immediate. Intuition tells you to pause, goosebumps erupting over your flesh from head to toe. Darkness swallows your surroundings whole in inky blots. Blinking rapidly, your eyes struggle to adjust. You feel around for your phone and turn the flashlight on. The sudden loss of power perplexes you, did the building’s breaker trip? From what you can see, the rest of the street is unaffected.
You’re about to resume your journey when you feel something cold press against your temple.
“Don’t move,” a deep voice demands. The roar of a car’s engine echoes nearby, as does the hurried screech of tires. “Not so much as a fucking inch.”
Anxiety sets your every nerve aflame. You go stiff as a corpse, and perhaps you may have been mistaken for one, if not for the thunderous pounding of your heart. The moisture in your mouth dries up. Tortuous seconds drag on, devoid of any further commands. You’re ready to offer up your purse, wallet, or anything else he insists on, but he’s eerily silent.
A pair of approaching headlights blind you.
Is this more than a robbery? You struggle to comprehend the nightmarish events. The man holding you hostage radiates agitation, shifting his weight from foot to foot. In doing so, the barrel drags along your sweat-slicked skin. His apparent sloppiness has you weak in the knees — it’s your life hanging in the balance, why is he acting like the situation is reversed?
Abruptly, the vehicle veers off course, crashing into a line of parked cars. A terrible cacophony follows. Glass shatters, metal debris shrieks whilst scattering, and car alarms angrily sound in disunity. What you’re witnessing doesn’t feel like real life. Your disbelief is mutual, for the man holding you captive spews curses.
You hear a click by your side; the gun’s safety being disengaged.
“Shit!” He maneuvers you in the direction of the crash like you’re a shield. “There’s no way we were followed, no way, we did everything perfect—”
The man never finishes his sentence.
There’s a wet gurgle, then a wheeze, as something warm splatters on you from behind. Bile rises up your throat as the wretched noises continue. He must’ve fallen to the ground, for you no longer sense his lumbering presence, or feel the cold kiss of metal on your skin. Regardless, you refuse to budge. You squeeze your eyes shut and tremble wildly.
“There, there. You’re safe now. ♥” A rich baritone speaks from behind.
His declaration comes out discordant, belying the reassuring contents. You bristle at the new threat that’s presented itself. If what came before was a house cat, then this is an apex predator, the king of the jungle. The air around him feels oppressive, almost noxious. Even without a firearm directed at you, your panic reaches its zenith, soaring to heights untraversed.
“Hm? Still scared? Ah, that’s right,” he muses to himself. “Chrollo said you’re sensitive to dishonesty. This could be troublesome.”
“You… you know Chrollo?”
“So you’re not in a catatonic state — how reassuring.”
Slowly, you turn around, sensing a distinct lack of ill intent. Flashlight in hand, you try to make sense of what you witness. The scene that greets you is gruesome beyond your wildest expectations. The man who you assume held you at gunpoint has collapsed onto the ground, his jugular slit clean. Blood gushes from the wound like a geyser, forming a crimson puddle around his head. His eyes are wide, bloodshot, nearly bulging from the sockets. Liquids ooze from every visible orifice and a foul odor rises alongside them. This pitiful creature could’ve been your end. Instead, he met his, departing this world in abject terror.
Unexpectedly, his muscles twitch. Out of reflex, you jump back and yelp.
“Rest assured, he’s dead as a doornail.”
“Why…” you wet your dry lips, “What… what just…?”
While you stumble over your words, the building’s power makes a triumphant return. The lights flash intermittently, then go steady, allowing you an unobscured vantage point. Before you stands a tall, bizarrely dressed individual, with bright red hair. His beady, yellow eyes have a predatory gleam to them that he doesn’t bother suppressing. He holds a playing card in his claw-like hands, the three of spades.
It’s coated in fresh blood.
Your eyes fall to the fatal wound on your assailant's throat, the gears in your head turning.
You take a step back.
“Let’s try this again, shall we?” With a flick of his wrist, the offending card disappears, though its memory burns strong. “I’m Hisoka, Chrollo’s… colleague of sorts. Now, there’s no need to introduce yourself. I’m well acquainted with you. ♥”
Is that supposed to make you feel better?
You couldn’t hide your suspicion if you tried. At the very least, there’s no indication that was a lie. However, his familiarity with you is a double-edged sword. If he’s crafty, he can outmaneuver your ability. Dishonesty isn’t black and white, there are loopholes to avoiding your detection. For instance, one can remain purposefully oblivious, lie by omission, or speak in vague terms. These gray areas pass you by as if you lacked this ‘sixth sense’ to begin with.
He was lying when he said I’m safe now, you recall. But he doesn’t seem interested in harming me…? Something isn’t adding up.
After much deliberation, you ask, “So you just happened to run into me?”
“Nope. I’ve been following you,” he freely admits. Your aghast expression makes him laugh. “What’s the matter? You were baiting me for the truth, were you not? You’re welcome to have it. ♦”
In your heightened state of sensitivity, you sense multiple presences converging nearby. Security guards, if you had to guess. You weigh your options. If you stay here, you’ll undoubtedly be harassed for a story that explains the chaos. Telling the truth would land you in a straight jacket whereas deception guarantees cuffs. Leaving in your car is off the table too, you’d be dubbed an important witness. There’s no way you can claim you drove by the carnage without noticing anything.
“I can help get you out of this debacle,” he offers. “We’re both seeking the same end — the return of Chrollo’s Hatsu. The latest recording I’ve obtained is most promising. So, I’d rather we don’t continue this conversation in prison. ♣”
Hisoka takes a step forward and extends his hand.
The security guards are getting closer, you think. There’s no time left.
And so you make your choice.
-
You didn’t think places like these existed outside of the movies, or maybe you just don’t get around enough.
You’ve found yourself in what you can only describe as a biker’s bar. The decor is old-fashioned, slightly worn yet authentic. There are pool tables, too many televisions to count, and a functioning jukebox nestled in the corner. Rough-looking men wearing leather jackets make up the main clientele. Fortunately, it’s Hisoka who draws the most attention, his gaudy getup acting as a magnet for the eyes. No one pays you any mind.
For the second time this week, a weirdo treats you to drinks. The main difference is that this is a depressant and not a stimulant.
You take hearty sips to calm your nerves. All that happened feels so surreal, like a collection of grotesque images that would be blurred out in a documentary. This is exactly what you wanted to avoid. You want to be normal, untethered by the oddity that is Nen, the ‘world’ Chrollo inhabits. You decided long ago that nothing good can come from it. Maybe if you were more adventurous, prone to taking high risks for high rewards.
But you’re not.
Endless money, power, and influence don’t sound appealing. Sure, there’s an allure initially, until you consider reality. Lots of money means either lots of taxes or lots of tax evasion. You barely know what a W-2 form is, much less the hoops you’d have to jump through if your income exploded. Power and influence aren’t all they’re cracked up to be either. All that scheming to stay at the top would take away from what makes life truly worth living — reading Wikipedia articles and watching eight-hour-long videos analyzing a video game from two decades ago.
“Holy shit,” you press pause on the cassette recorder. “This Abengane guy’s the real deal.”
“Oh?”
“He’s familiar with getting rid o’ Nen. During his… huh, what’s it called again… oh. Yeah. Audition. Durin’ his audition for Greedy Island—”
“ —Greed Island.”
You wave his correction off.
“—Yeah, yeah, whatever. But, basically, he’s legit. How’d ya even come across this?”
“Magic. ♥”
You make a face. “Is everyone who uses Nen annoying?”
“Some more than others.”
Speak of the devil. Craning your neck, you’re met with piercing gray eyes. Unlike Hisoka, Chrollo isn’t dressed like he’s auditioning for the circus. Instead, he comes across as a guy who’s going to pitch the worst idea for a startup you’ve ever heard. He’s wearing a dark blazer with a gray turtleneck beneath it, along with white pants and black loafers. You’re about to make your joke known when something about Chrollo’s demeanor changes your mind. Intensity pours off him in waves, giving you pause.
“Good news, boss. We found your exorcist.”
The title Hisoka uses to refer to him has you tilting your head. He did refer to himself as Chrollo’s ‘colleague,’ but the word boss implies hierarchy.
“I heard,” Chrollo smiles, though it doesn’t reach his eyes. “I’m surprised you’re not rushing back to Greed Island to track him down.”
He slides into the booth beside you while never looking away from Hisoka. The tension brewing in the air perplexes you. Shouldn’t this news be a cause for celebration? You’ve helped Chrollo search for a Nen exorcist for months now. Chrollo’s been searching for a Nen exorcist for months now. You’re uncertain what reaction you expected, but it certainly wasn’t this.
“All in due time. I’d hate to cut my time with your little assistant short.”
Hisoka makes a point of looking you up and down.
Somehow, Hisoka has made Chrollo seem normal by comparison. Disliking the attention, you reach for your drink, only to notice how light it is. Have you already drunk that much? While inspecting the near-empty glass, you realize the room’s starting to feel warm. The stress of what you endured must’ve impaired your judgment.
What time is it, anyway? Do I have work tomorrow?
Your watch reads 2:05 a.m.
Shit.
“I need— need to get going…”
“Why the rush?” Hisoka questions. “Things were just starting to get interesting. ♥”
You ignore him and stare Chrollo down, waiting for him to move aside so you can leave. Instead of getting up, he leans closer, pursing his lips. This is the closest you’ve ever been to him. Heat creeps over your face, from your cheeks to your ears. There’s no denying that the bastard’s handsome. Your friends love teasing you about him for that very reason. They never believe your insistence on having a ‘strictly platonic’ relationship, some even have bets for when you’ll end up together.
Maybe you would’ve considered it if you didn’t know about his Nen proficiency.
There aren’t any readily available statistics for Nen, but if you had to guess, you’d say most of the population is ignorant of its existence. People who do know about the Hunter’s Association consider it a private enterprise that specializes in exploration and taking on contract jobs. According to Chrollo, this is by design. You can barely go about your day pretending there aren’t superhumans roaming the planet, doing all sorts of crazy nonsense.
Society would plunge into chaos if the knowledge reached them.
You hear what sounds like your name coming from underwater.
Blinking sluggishly, you discover Chrollo’s hand on your shoulder. “Hm? What?”
“I’ve been calling your name,” he speaks languidly, likely for your benefit. “Are you alright?”
“Well…” you trail off, pondering the question. “... Mm, yeah, probably not. I gotta get home, and— god, my car— it’s still back there. I don’t want… I can’t…”
The anxiety you thought you buried resuscitates itself. It’s dull compared to earlier, yet your breathing grows shallow and your hands feel clammy. Your intenses churn like a parasite had been embedded inside. Everything feels far away, as if you’re in a dream, physically present yet mentally adrift.
You could’ve died.
You almost died.
You’d fought desperately to scrub your mind of this knowledge, but the bottle can only do so much.
“Say, Chrollo,” with a nearly imperceptible motion, Hisoka summons a playing card between his middle and pointer fingers. “If I were to slice her pretty neck, what would you do?”
The old-fashioned glass Hisoka had been sipping from cracks.
Pressure invades the air like a thick, heady fog, so tangible in its potency, that the chatter elsewhere dies down. The sudden silence allows for the clinging of billiard balls to reverberate throughout. Patrons glance around, vaguely aware that something is wrong, yet ultimately unable to identify the source. This primal sense of foreboding evaporates as swiftly as it arrives. The lively atmosphere reemerges, until all present seem to have forgotten anything unusual ever occurred.
Hisoka absentmindedly cleans up the glass shards, piling them into the corner while Chrollo drums his fingers along the table. Chrollo’s jaw is set and the skin between his eyes is pinched in contemplation.
Hisoka lets out an exaggerated sigh. “This is turning into a bore. I was confident you’d lose your cool, even if just a bit…”
“Pathetic.”
The unexpected vitriol has them both turning their heads in your direction. Chrollo blinks, while Hisoka tilts his head, staring at you owlishly.
He points to himself. “Me?”
“Yeah, you! You’re like— one of those birds, those showoff birds… dancing with your colorful feathers… ‘nd stuff…” your speech isn’t the most coherent, unaided by the irritation that’s boiling your blood. You leer at him, fed up with everything, especially whatever schemes he’s roped you into. A rough picture is presenting itself, one stroke at a time. To Hisoka, you’re nothing more than glorified bait. You don’t know if he played a role in engineering the evening’s events, but it wouldn’t be a surprise.
At the very least, he admitted to following you. Even if he was a third party, he could’ve disposed of the impending threat. Instead, he waited, exposing you to bloodshed for his own ends. You wish you could come up with a more scathing insult. Unfortunately, your temple is throbbing and clear enunciation grows harder as your body digests the liquor you inhaled.
Hisoka looks at Chrollo. “I’m a bird?”
“She’s calling your bluff,” Chrollo clarifies. “Had you intended to follow up on your threat, she’d know.”
You’re glad Chrollo realized what you were going for. The diatribe sounded better in your head. Nonetheless, he’s communicated the essence of things, lacking as it is in panache. Hisoka hums, eyeing you like you’d make for a fine appetizer before the main course.
“You must have kept that detail from me on purpose. What an intriguing ability. ♥”
Chrollo brushes aside his comment and refocuses his attention on you. “I’ll drive you home.”
“But my car—”
“I’ll handle it,” Chrollo reassures.
He slides out from the booth and stares at you expectantly. You get the sense that trying his patience isn’t a good idea; his encounter with Hisoka must have soured his mood. He helps steady you as you stand, securing his arm behind your back. Neither of you acknowledges Hisoka while making for the door, though you can feel his eyes tracking your every movement.
Upon emerging from the bar, the cool air you deplored earlier feels like a godsend. You hear cars rushing up and down the street, indicating the presence of a highway. Other than that, you don’t recognize the area. It’s a small, decrepit outlet, featuring shops plastered with neon signs and bars over the windows.
Chrollo ushers you in the direction of a black, unmarked McLaren.
“If you’re gonna do all that, at least get a less basic color… like pink…”
“I’ll give it some thought.”
Once you’re in the passenger seat, he fixes the strap of your purse and then buckles you in. It isn’t long until you’re on the road. He stays in the slow lane, mindful to avoid abrupt motions. You recline back and rest your head, hugging your arms close to your body. At the next red light, he sheds his coat, draping it over your person. The cashmere fabric is soft on your skin, embedded with his cologne and warmth. This, paired with the low hum of the engine has your eyelids growing heavy. You try resisting the temptation.
“Thank you.”
“Hm? For what?”
“... Are you serious?” you murmur. “For comin’ to get me.”
“Of course.”
Relief rushes over you as the surrounding area becomes recognizable. Traffic is nonexistent this time of night, it shouldn’t be but a few more minutes until you’re home. Then you can crash out on your bed and deal with the existential weight of reality in the morning. Work can fire you for all you care, you just want to sleep. If you were on your deathbed, you’re ninety percent positive they’d ask you to find shift coverage before you croaked.
Chrollo pulls into your apartment complex, parking as close to the entrance as he can.
You fiddle with your seatbelt, intending to make the rest of the trip by yourself.
He places his large, calloused hand over yours, preventing further progress.
“... Chrollo?”
He doesn’t respond. His thumb rubs slow, steady circles against your skin. You swallow a growing lump in your throat. He hasn’t been himself all night. Or, to be more precise, he’s showing you a side of himself he’s hitherto kept hidden. You always knew there was more to him than he let on. You never wanted to open that Pandora's box, lest your plans be jeopardized. Playing with fire has its risks, yet cauterizing your personal wounds took priority. You don’t know if you have the right to pray the rest of your being doesn’t go up in flames.
“I assume you’re aware of my fondness for you?”
“I— well…” you stumble over your words, then meekly ask, “Is now really a good time for this?”
Chrollo lowers his head and smiles. “No, I suppose not.”
An uncomfortable silence hangs in the air.
“One more question, then I’ll let you go,” he looks up at you through thick lashes, an enigmatic gleam passing over his eyes. “Do I frighten you?”
Your body tenses. He addresses you so softly, so sweetly, had you not witnessed his mouth moving, you would’ve mistaken his voice for belonging to another. Your facilities aren’t functional enough to properly process his query. Perhaps that’s the point — him cornering you at this vulnerable junction. You don’t get why. You don’t think you could even if you were sober.
Chrollo, for his part, seems to acknowledge he won’t get far in your current state.
Or maybe he gleaned his answer.
He lifts your hand to his lips, where he presses a lingering kiss. You can’t bring yourself to be the first to pull away. He lingers a while longer, as if stuck in a trance. When he does part, the skin tingles in his absence.
“I’ll be in touch.”
-
For the past week, you’ve carried on as if nothing ever happened.
It’s easier this way. There are instances where your performance is threatened, like when you ran across a news article detailing the ‘grisly murder of two men at a parking garage on 9th St,’ yet these lapses can be smoothed over. Ignore, distract, forget. This cycle lends you a credence of normalcy and eases you back into everyday life.
You haven’t seen Chrollo since that night. You suppose he’s preoccupied with his arrangements to meet the Nen exorcist. While you don’t know the specifics, you imagine he’ll have to meet this Abengane in person. In the recording, he addressed two men — named Battera and Tsezguerra — where he proved himself qualified to enter ‘Greed Island.’ Aside from a few anonymous forums, information on this mythical game is sparse. All you know is that the price is exorbitant and that Battera obsessively tracks down every copy available.
Wherever there’s Nen, things inevitably get weird, you think.
You begin tidying up your apartment. First is drying off the dishes, which saw their first use all week for a much-needed home-cooked meal. While doing so, your phone vibrates. You throw the damp rag down in a hurry and check the screen. All you find is a notification about your upcoming menstrual cycle. Sighing, you put your phone down on the counter.
Chrollo had been truthful when he promised to take your Hatsu for assisting in the return of his. A part of you is relieved by his absence; the other is frustrated. You want to get this over with. It’s like when you have an appointment later in the day and spend the time leading up to it in a limbo, not wanting to get involved in anything until the commitment is over. Is it possible he already took it? Curious, you hold your dominant hand out. You haven’t used Instant Replay since the night at the biker’s bar.
Aura surges through you, concentrating at the palm of your hand. Much to your disappointment, the light pink cassette tape appears. Maybe it no longer works? As a test, you rewind the recording of the audio Chrollo provided at the café. Once primed, you press play, listening attentively for certain cues.
“It is my great honor to profess that I, Lilith, can purge you of any ailment, even scourges derived from Nen — for a small donation of…”
The self-proclaimed Mistress of Panaceas sounds increasingly garbled as her lies surface. Clicking your tongue, you deactivate your ability. Everything remains operational. You don’t know what you expected, you’ve overheard the telltale sounds of lying the past few days. It just hasn’t been directed at you, which weakens the effect.
Will you really have to endure this the rest of your life?
Shortly into resuming your task, there’s a knock at your door.
You ignore it, not in the mood to deal with a neighbor asking for something. After thirty or so seconds, there’s another round of knocking. You suppress a groan. Why can’t the world sense that you’re moody and let you brood in peace? Trudging over, you try to put on a pleasant face, unwilling to lash out on others even if you’re in a terrible mood. Erring on the side of caution, you glance out the peephole.
Upon doing so, you almost lose your balance.
…
He must’ve decided he kept you waiting long enough.

True to his word, Theo let you pay for your dress. And yet, a week before the wedding, you receive a charming set of pearls, courtesy of one Mr. Theodore Nott.
"Thin ice," you say to him as a means of greeting at the wedding. He bends down to kiss your cheek in hello, and when he steps back you see him grinning. His gaze flicks down to the pearls around your neck.
"Whatever for?"
After the quick hello, he's almost immediately pulled away again into his best man duties. You drift around, saying hi to a few familiar faces. In fact, you only find him again while exploring the venue.
You spy the groomsmen gathered near the entrance of the reception hall, a loose circle of dark suits and polished shoes, some fixing their cornflower boutonnieres, others already nursing drinks.
Theo stands in the middle of them, one hand in his pocket, looking effortlessly put together with his crisp sky-blue pocket square - that is, except for the small white rose in his hand, still separate from his lapel. He rolls it between his fingers absently, half-listening to whatever joke Enzo is telling.
You know you shouldn’t care. You know you shouldn’t notice the way it’s just slightly crumpled from where he’s been holding it for too long, fidgeting with it restlessly, like he hasn’t thought to ask for help, like he’s waiting for someone else to step in.
“Here,” you say anyway, stepping forward before you can think better of it.
Theo barely reacts as you pluck the flower out of his slack grip. He only shifts slightly, angling himself toward you, allowing you to close the space between you as you pin it into place.
You focus on the task at hand, on the fine, expensive fabric beneath your fingers, on making sure the flower is positioned just right. You don’t look at him, and if you feel his warm breath ghosting over your skin, you don't show it.
But he looks at you.
You feel it - the weight of his gaze, the way he watches you like it’s the most natural thing in the world for you to be doing this for him, the way you've done it a hundred times before.
And that’s when it appears. That quiet, unwelcome thought.
This isn’t who I am anymore.
Because it’s not just a boutonniere. It’s the way this feels too familiar, too easy - slipping into an old version of yourself, one who smoothed Theo’s collar without thinking, who fixed his tie before he headed out the door, the one who looked after him like it was just second nature.
Years have passed. You thought you had clawed out, escaped, and yet the second he comes running back to you, you’re back here, in his orbit, making sure he looks good for a moment that isn’t even yours.
And the worst part? He anticipates it.
Not in an entitled way. Not because he thinks it’s your job. But because this is how it’s always been. Because he still sees you as that girl. The one who stands beside him, just slightly behind. The one who makes things easier for him. The one who's ready to cheer him on from the sidelines. The one who's agreeable enough to not take up any more space than he could afford.
But that's just it, wasn't it? You weren't ready to give up a life of your own for his. You tolerated it until you started resenting him for it. He hadn't understood it then. He probably didn't understand it now. Either way, it didn't matter. It was too late.
“There.” You finish pinning the boutonniere, stepping away before the moment can stretch too thin.
Theo glances down at it briefly, then back at you. His lips part, like he might say something. But then someone else claps him on the back, congratulating him on something, and just like that, the moment passes.
You slip away, back into the crowd, back into yourself.
You don’t look back.
The wedding is beautiful and the reception is a vivid, lively affair. You run into so many old friends and made so many new ones that you hardly felt the lack of Theo. You rather enjoy the swing band, but now the music is shifting into something slow, sweeping - a song made for moments like this.
Couples drift onto the dance floor, drawn in by the soft pull of violin strings bathed in candlelight. You’re content watching from your seat, half-listening to the slightly obscure conversation at your table until a hand extends into your view.
Theo.
You hadn't seen him since his toast, after which his attention had been demanded by a thousand other people for reasons that had nothing to do with his fame. Even at Hogwarts, people seemed drawn in by his aloof sincerity despite his somewhat reserved demeanour. You didn't mind watching him thrive in his element - you were more than happy in the company of the sparkling liquor at your table and friends-of-friends you'd only heard of.
Now, you blink up at him, a little dazed. Perhaps it would have been wise to stay a little more sober. His expression is unreadable, but there’s a shadow in his dark eyes. A quiet insistence.
“Dance with me.”
It’s not really a question. Your first instinct is to say no, but something in the way he looks at you makes you pause.
So you take his hand.
His palm is warm with a familiar roughness as it guides yours. He leads you onto the dance floor with a practiced ease, slotting a hand against your waist as if this is something you've done a hundred times before. As if this is something you still do.
It shouldn’t feel so effortless. It shouldn’t be this easy, falling into step with him. But it is.
The rest of the room falls away.
For a while, neither of you speak. The silence between you isn’t unfamiliar—it’s lived in, worn down by time. But it doesn’t settle the way it used to. There’s something restless underneath, roaming and nervous. You wonder if he can feel it too.
His hand tightens slightly at your waist, the smallest of gestures, but it makes something twist deep in your chest.
“People will talk,” you murmur, more to fill the space than anything else.
He doesn’t even glance around. “Let them.”
Easy for him to say. He more than looks the part of someone meant to be here - sharp suit, easy confidence, the kind of presence that draws attention like gravity. He belongs in ways you can only dream of.
Your dress is simple. Pretty, but not remarkable. Not the kind of thing people would take a second look at. And yet, standing beside him, in the center of the dance floor, you can feel the weight of glances which linger too long.
You know what they see.
A girl in borrowed glamour, playing pretend in someone else’s world. A fleeting guest on the arm of someone who’s only ever been untouchable. They’re probably wondering the same thing you are - why he asked you to dance in the first place.
You draw Theo closer, wrapping your arms around his neck as you press your cheek into the crook of his neck. Anything to hide your face from him. For the first time in years, you feel inadequate.
“Relax.” You feel Theo's voice vibrate through his chest, low, almost amused, like he can read every thought passing through your mind.
"I am," you rasp. It's an unconvincing sound even to your own ears. Y
ou begin to wish you hadn't agreed to this. It was a stupid reminder of the trophy wife you never knew how to be.Despite what he might think, you hadn't abandoned your relationship at the first sign of strife. You tried - Merlin, you tried - squeezing yourself into a box to make even more room for him. But eventually, you had to accept that you just weren't that girl - the one who was glamorous yet self-fulfilled enough to be seen on his arm.
He imperceptibly slides his hand up your back. “You look fine.”
It’s a throwaway comment, a dismissive sort of reassurance. It shouldn’t matter. And yet, you feel the familiar sting of something old, something buried, something you promised yourself to forget. A part of you missed this, missed him, so here you were, play-acting at being man and wife.
The music swells, and he turns you effortlessly in time with it. You move like muscle memory, feet gliding through the motions without thinking.
Maybe this is why you said yes - because of the way his hand fits against yours, or the way his gaze softens when he thinks you’re not looking. Because the two of you can't help but work this well together.
You exhale, carefully schooling your expression into something even as you pull back to face him. “I wasn’t asking for your opinion.”
Theo’s mouth lifts at the corner—barely a smirk, but there’s something knowing in it. He doesn’t reply.
The song begins to fade, the final notes melting into the hum of the reception. Theo slows to a stop, fingers loosening around yours, and something flickers in his expression. Like he wants to say something. Like he’s looking at you - really looking, as if for the first time.
But then someone calls his name from across the room. His attention flickers, just for a second, but it’s enough. The moment shifts and dissolves.
Tomorrow you'll wake up in a cold, empty bed with aching feet. The both of you will go back to living your separate lives, but each night you'll wonder if tonight was a dream that never really happened.
You step back, slipping out of his hold before he can do it first. Before the silence between you turns into something else.
“Thanks for the dance,” you say lightly, already turning.
You don’t look back to see if he watches you go. And if your hands still feel warm where he held them, well - that’s nobody’s business but yours.
The reception hall is empty now, save for the two of you. The candles have burned low, wax pooling in their gilded holders, and the last of the champagne sits in your glass, its fizz whispering in the quiet. The music stopped a while ago. So did the dancing, the toasts, and the laughter of people whose love doesn’t come with fine print and hidden clauses.
But you’re still here. And so is Theo.
He’s warm beside you, your shoulder tucked into his as he leans back in his chair, one arm slung lazily across the back of yours. The night has left you both a little drunk, a little drowsy, a little too comfortable in each other’s company. Even with the buzz of the drinks, it's getting harder and harder to ignore the chill creeping up your arms. You don’t remember when you started leaning into him, but he hasn’t moved away. You hope he doesn't anytime soon.
He turns his head, eyeing what's left of the extravagantly lavish cake. "Seven tiers, half of which will go uneaten," Theo mutters, voice threaded with amusement. "It is Mattheo's wedding, after all. Why have enough when you can have far too much?"
You let out a soft laugh, tilting your head against his shoulder. "Like you're one to talk about...excesses."
Theo gives a long-suffering sigh.
"Is that what you think of me? Excessive?"
"I think," you say in a tone of faux innocence, "you don't want to know what I think of you."
He groans and throws his head back, eliciting a laugh from you. It's a strangely effective balm, this good-natured ribbing, or maybe it's the alcohol. You swirl the last sip of champagne in your glass. The gold catches the light, shimmering against the crystal, and you think—not for the first time tonight—how easy this is. How easy it always was with him.
Maybe it’s the champagne. Maybe it’s the quiet. Maybe it’s the fact that the wedding is over, and yet you’re still here, wrapped up in Theo like a memory, like you’ve forgotten that you were just supposed to be his date for the night.
"You’re warm," you murmur, shifting slightly to press closer.
He huffs a laugh. "You’re drunk."
"Just tipsy." You look up at him, eyes heavy-lidded. "Big difference."
The alcohol has made your consciousness deliciously blurry. You become aware of the cold, rigid surface of your shoes pressing against your aching feet. In your mind's eye, you see your slippers melting off your feet, clear as glass, dripping diamonds which promise to wound your feet.
But you're still curled up with Theo, perched on some delicate fence between exes or something more, and even now, years on, you know he won't let you fall - he never did and he never would.
If only things were the same with you.
You were no longer the girl who knew how to love Theo the way you once did, wholly and purely. You wished you were. Tears gather under your eyelashes like crystals, heavy with remorse. You wished you knew how. For the love of God, wouldn't someone tell you how?
He watches you for a beat longer than he should.
And then his hand comes up, slow enough that you could stop him if you wanted to. His knuckles ghost over your jaw, then his fingers slip beneath your chin, tilting your face toward his.
You should stop him.
But the champagne is warm in your veins, his bedroom eyes are the worst kind of drug and the way he looks at you—like he still remembers exactly how you take your tea, like he still knows how to make you laugh even when you don’t want to—makes you hesitate just long enough for his lips to brush yours.
It’s not desperate. Not hurried. Just a quiet thing, lingering at the edges of something once lost.
For a moment, you let yourself sink into it.
For a moment, it’s easy to forget.
But then the thought creeps in—quiet, insidious.
I’m not that girl.
Not the girl he wants or the girl he needs.
You pull away before the thought can swallow you whole.
Theo blinks, exhaling like he hadn’t realized he was holding his breath. It almost sounds like disappointment. He doesn’t say anything, just watches you with something unreadable in his eyes.
You don’t resent him for this. Not anymore.
It’s not his fault you still feel the echoes of something that should have faded years ago.
And it’s not your fault that you know better now.

Based On My Dreams Series (RAW):
❝ Chase ❞
start - friday31022025
couple - Choi Seung Hyun (T.O.P) x fem!reader
note - softly, badwords(maybe?), Han Seo Hee (im a biggest hater), short
caption section - this short-fanfic is based on my dream, the only difference i edited is a little bit and the area where they interact, the rest is kept the same as in the dream. so i kept the presence of Han Seo Hee (who appeared in my dream). And remember, Han SEO Hee not Han SOO Hee!!!
We’re always open to feedback and ideas to make the story better!
The kids were ushered away from the playground right after you managed to call security. That woman, however, kept pushing forward, calling out to T.O.P repeatedly. But you stepped in, blocking her way.
“Please, just shut the hell up! And then get lost!!”
She kept advancing like a madwoman, teasing and provoking Seung Hyun as if she were high. In a fit of anger, you even grabbed a handful of the playground sand and held it up, threatening to throw it at her. Only then did Han Seo Hee curse under her breath and storm off.
“That woman… ugh"
You turned back to the slide, the tall tube one. Scanning around, you didn’t see T.O.P anywhere. Thinking he had already left, you let out a small sigh. But then, a faint creaking sound came from inside the slide.
Looking closer, you noticed a large shadow within it. After a brief moment of hesitation, you decided to crawl in as well.
“Seung Hyun-ah…” you called softly.
Since you weren’t Korean and didn’t fully understand the cultural nuances, you instinctively called him by his name. The moment you realized it might be too informal, you quickly pressed your lips together, staying silent.
T.O.P didn’t reply. Instead, he hesitantly lifted his gaze, looking directly into your eyes. His long, thick lashes and sharp nose made you hold your breath for a moment. The space between you two felt like it was shrinking, tightening with an unspoken tension.
The positioning was… strange, to say the least. T.O.P, being tall, was lying flat inside the tube slide, while you were halfway inside, lying on the playground floor. Your heads met near the opening of the slide, making it look like two adults playing a children’s game. Yet, somehow, the atmosphere between you both shifted into something much more intense—just from his sheer beauty.
Fine, maybe you were being immature, but could you really be blamed?!
“Are you okay?” You asked, knowing full well how pointless the question was. So, without waiting for an answer, you quickly changed the subject: “There’s an ice cream shop nearby. Do you want to go there with me?”
He exhaled, a deep and shaky breath, closing his eyes before resting his forehead against the slide. Just as he was about to answer, your hand moved on its own, reaching out to touch his hair.
“Seung… Seung Hyun-ssi, I chased that woman away.”
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore. I’ll chase away everything that upsets you.”
“So… let’s go get some ice cream, okay? They have peach flavor—I researched carefully for today.”
Choi Seung Hyun studied you quietly. His lashes were slightly damp, probably from Han Seo Hee’s presence earlier. His lips, too. Maybe he had shed a few tears while you were dealing with that woman. Right now, he looked like a kid who had just stopped crying—one who was listening to his mother promise him sweet treats to cheer him up. Happy about the candy, but secretly wishing for a bigger gift.
Looking at him like this, you couldn’t help but smile, your eyes crinkling slightly as you admired his beautiful yet childlike face.
“I promise it won’t trigger your allergies. That place is really careful. The ice cream is made from real fruit.”
Your voice lifted a pitch or two, becoming brighter, lighter. And it made T.O.P smile. He pouted slightly before speaking, his deep voice laced with playful mischief.

[I remember when we got some dialogue for this scene on Patreon. Before the episode finally aired, you only got snips of this scene. However, even with what little you got- it was a pretty close call to say that Queen Tyneen was talking about Shrike.
I think about this scene a lot. I mention in a post some time ago how Beebs is treated with more respect than Shrike is. It seems like that anyone who knows Shrike, treats him as a loser. Even though Tyneen is trashing on Shrike, you can tell that she also finds Beebs to be better than him. That Beebs should be finding others of similar level or respect than keeping Shrike along.
Its implied here by Tyneen that Shrike is seen as a mistake- but also just a good no individual. Like Tyneen is smiling here, having some positivity that Shrike is gone. As if Beebs is better off without him. That with Shrike gone, not only would Beebs' issues be resolved, but everyone else as well. Shrike seems to be a common target to get rid of- mostly due to being 'unless' or a obstacle to others.
It is hard to tell exactly how Beebs does feel about Shrike. We have yet to really get an explanation of how the two met. There has so far been no reference if Beebs ever worked for LAW before- I think if he did, Ricket would know him too- but Ricket is new to Beebs as well, as he doesn't even know his name- referring him to "Beard." Its interesting though, you can see how Beebs actually seems to be- frighten by that idea? I'm not the best at describing, but his expression tells me the idea of cutting off Shrike like that might hurt him as well. Beebs seems to even be disappointed when saying that Shrike is off doing his own thing.
Then you have Tyneen going off- like how could anyone stand keeping Shrike around? Why would anyone want to? It makes me wonder if Tyneen knew Shrike from the past as well- was she also a former LAW member who used to work along Shrike? It feels like its implied here that Tyneen once worked with Shrike as well and knows that he can be quite. a Nuisance.
This does make me curious- and I hope we get to some back story for this- how Tyneen and Ricket do know Shrike. Were they on a team together? I mean how bad was Shrike that Tyneen finds Ricket to better to keep around? As we also know she calls him a loser on the way out too. I know that Shrike wearing the Red Suit is a giving that he was a LAW enforcer, but, this also implies that Tyneen knew Shrike when he was in action with LAW.
Not going to lie, that line hurt me too. Shrike is seen to be so pathetic to others like Tyneen to call him a Leech who is surviving off of Beebs. Though, I can also see why she said that too as so far, without Beebs, Shrike wouldn't really be alive... Beebs have so far pulled Shrike through a lot of their contracts and ordeals they have face. I think about Us & Them. If Beebs was not there, really none of them, especially Shrike, would have not made it...
Of course we do not really have anything on Tyneen and her past. So when she mentions this, I wonder... probably a out of pocket theory, is it possibly that she was a Enforcer Commander before becoming a pirate? As in a commander of her own squad and Shrike and Beebs was originally a part of it? So she got first hand experience of what Shrike was like? Maybe she cut him off in the past?
Oh but this line got to me back in the previews. I actually was afraid at the end of this episode that Beebs was going to cut off Shrike, but there has to be a good reason why Beebs likes him. Probably one of my few fan moments of "You better NOT" and was afraid that was going to happen- or
its still to come... I will not be looking forward to that.
Anyway, this one hurt me. Like I said before, Tyneen sees Shrike to be unless, a nothing, a waste of space, and she's trying to convince Beebs to see him the same way and get rid of him. Tyneen sees Beebs to be better than Shrike, and its interesting, because in the same episode we do watch as Shrike does praise Beebs and Shrike compares himself to be the mess, not Beebs. Though, Shrike was drunk as well but, I think he was being genuine. Its so interesting to me how different the two are treated. To his own Kind, Beebs is seen lesser but seems to be more respected by other species, while Shrike? No matter where he is or was, no one seems to respect him. I think about this scene a lot.
I think about Shrike. I just wonder what he has gone through? I wonder what he has done for others to not change their opinion on him? What he has done to be look so down upon? I wonder if Tyneen has made Beebs changed his mind on Shrike, or considers ditching him too?
I think sometimes I see a bit of myself in Shrike. I understand that feeling. Living like no one wants you or feeling like nothing. You're just a mess up, trying to correct your ways or make it better, but in the end, you mess it up even more. You just want to feel like a space in this world, and maybe just want one person to make you feel like you are needed in this world too.

Fanblog and fans. I want to start this by thanking all of you. This has single-handedly been one of the most positively overwhelming things I’ve done, which is saying a lot I think. I’d like to thank all who supported me and even those who didn’t. You all have made this war enjoyable and now that I’ve won I think it's fair I keep my promise. First though, i'd like to say a few things.
I like to think that the only reason I’ve had the success I have with this has simply been because you don’t know who i am. The power an identity has is strong and it becomes stronger when you hide it. I know that now first hand. I’d like to think the mask I’ve put on while I’ve played this part is well constructed. I’ve expertly been able to hide it from you all except for one person. @moss-moths-eyes-and-whimsy you are a genius. Crazy, but a genius. The dedication you put in purely to know me makes me slightly worried but alas, it's been amazing talking to you about all of this. Speaking of them actually, I have had such an amazing time helping to taunt the discord. I’m genuinely curious how far some of you have gotten in your own research, and since hearing from Moss I’ve tried to cover my tracks better based on what they’ve told me. So if your research has become a bit more difficult, blame them :)
I'd also like to take a moment to brag. The pure stress one experiences being the revolutionary who started the war is immense. On top of having 3 other fanblogs plus my original blog, I have not made a single mistake. The thing that mainly kept me going was the appreciation for my propaganda. I truly didn’t expect those to be so popular but alas, I was proven wrong. I'd also like to take a moment to thank my one friend who has been my right hand man and a damn good one at that. He has probably helped coach me through so many things that I couldn’t count them on my hands. I’m honestly proud of myself for going as far as I have with this. The final night of the poll I was up until 4 just watching it, convinced a last minute turnaround would happen. It didn’t, thankfully but that alone made me all the happier to finally have this war over.
Just because the war is over will not mean I’ll leave the throne I've built for myself. I will continue to fight the battles I need to. I will not stop even when my blades are covered in layers of blood. I will always come back to the deep Blackstone floor, tall pillars stretching above till infinity, and sit on the dark throne I made. My identity is not the end of the battles. I will not rest until the sky’s clear and everyone won't have to worry about mpreg. This is a promise. I will not stop until you are free.
As i close this speech out i'd like to thank you all one more time. I look forward to once again leading any revolution or battle. I am forever in your service and will be till the day I leave this cursed app. I’ll lastly like to say that i, the Anti Mpreg fanblog, leader of the revolution, and saint of the people, am

No Sleep Part Three
A/N: Woooowwwwww. It took me an entire six months but I finally decided to pop up once again. I never intended to take this long of a break but I was not in a good place mentally and needed a break. But I couldn't let this story go just yet so here we are. Thank you for all the love Part One and Part Two received. I believe there's one more part remaining but it's still a work in progress. Promise it won't take me another six-ish months to complete. Enjoy.
*Pairings: Jey Uso/OC (black fem)
*Warnings: 18+
*Word Count: Approximately 3900 words.
Jon placed the two dumbbells he was using on the rack and turned to face his brothers. “So yall got anything else to do before we head to the arena?”
Sefa sat up on the bench he was laying on and shook his head. He bent over to grab his bottle of water and took a large gulp. “Just take a quick shower. What about you Uce?”
Silence followed Sefa’s question causing him and Jon to look over towards Josh. They snickered quietly as they watched him staring at the scene before him.
Jon shook his head while he walked towards his twin before he stood directly next to him. He snapped his fingers in his face. “Yo Uce!”
Josh snapped back to reality at the sound of Jon’s voice. He glanced over his shoulders to his brothers. “What’s up?”
“We tryna see if you had anything else to do before we left for the arena,” Sefa explained. “But you ain’t hear us because you’re too busy starin at Imani. Again.”
Josh smacked his lips. “I ain’t staring at Imani.” He grabbed the dumbbells he was using and started walking towards the rack to place the weights back.
“You definitely starin at her like a love sick puppy Uce. Like you’ve been doing since she got called up to the main roster,” Jon countered with a chuckle. “Just go talk to her. You know you want to.”
Josh glanced over his shoulders towards the area where Imani stood talking to Krystle. He studied her as she laughed at something Krystle said, her hands twisting her hair in a sloppy bun revealing her sweat drenched neck and chest. Jon was right - he did want to talk to Imani. Had been wanting to talk to her since it was revealed she was the newest member of the Smackdown commentary team. But he just couldn’t force himself to make the first move.
It had been a little over three months since the night they shared in Sefa and Krystle’s living room and things had not progressed the way he hoped. One moment they’re falling asleep together in Sefa and Krystle’s guest room, sharing kisses. Then the next morning he woke up alone, all traces of Imani gone. If it wasn’t for Sefa mean mugging him for hooking up with his girlfriend’s best friend on his “fuckin couch” and Krystle constantly teasing him about it as they rode to the airport, Josh would’ve thought that night was a dream. But it did happen and what he thought would be a step forward into getting to know Imani on a deeper level didn’t pan out the way he hoped. Josh couldn’t help but feel disappointed that he didn’t at least exchange numbers with her so he could keep in touch with her and link up with one another the next time he was in town. Hell he even tried a few times to reach out to her on Instagram. But his messages went unanswered and it became clear to him that despite the connection he thought they formed Imani didn’t want anything to do with him.
Nonetheless Josh didn’t have time to mope. For the first time in his career he was on top of the WWE landscape as a singles competitor, garnering deafening reactions from fans on a weekly basis. He was one of the company’s top merch sellers and was constantly booked and busy with various meet and greets and interviews. His career was thriving and he was so thankful to be in the position he was in. He quickly saw his free time dwindling away between handling his job duties and raising his sons while his popularity quickly skyrocketed.
The more he was featured, the more women started to desire him. Whether he was walking through the concourse and the crowd during his entrance, trying to check into his hotel after shows, or just trying to get a bite to eat when he was home women were constantly making a move on him in hopes of hooking up with the newest company heartthrob. And sure getting attention from so many women was an enormous ego boost and if he was younger he would’ve indulged in the perks of his newfound fame.
However, the man he was now simply didn’t find that enjoyable.
Josh attempted to use his packed schedule to distract him but there were times when he found himself thinking about how he had reached a point in his life where he craved something deeper than a meaningless hook up. Watching Jon and Sefa settle down with women they adored forced him to realize he wanted the same thing. He wanted somebody that he could be himself with. A woman that could relax him and take his mind off of work whenever they spent time together. Somebody that adored Joshua Fatu instead of being infatuated with Jey Uso. And although he did everything he could to ignore the nagging voice in the back of his mind he knew there was only one woman that fit that role.
Josh glanced back towards the area Imani and Krystle were to see that they were no longer there. With a sigh, he turned to face Jon and Sefa who by now were gathering their belongings to leave. He grabbed his own bag and slung the strap over his shoulder and followed his brothers out of the gym and to Sefa’s rental car. Once they were all inside Sefa pulled out of the parking lot to head to the hotel.
The car stopped at a red light and Josh sighed. “I’on even know what to say to her.”
Jon laughed as he focused on the text he was typing on his phone while he sat in the passenger seat. “So you mean to tell me you eat her pussy-”
“On my fuckin couch,” Sefa interjected with a scowl.
“And now you don’t know how to talk to her? Uce you turning shy on us?”
Josh rolled his eyes. “I ain’t say I’on know how to talk to her. I said I’on know what to say to her. It’s just…she’s just…like…” He trailed off and sighed again. “Like y’all know I fuckin like her. And after what happened that night I thought she was feelin’ me too. But now I’on know. It’s been months Uce and she ain’t respond to any of my messages. Hell she ain’t even approached me backstage since she came up. Maybe she don’t want shit to do with me,” Josh conceeded with a defeated shrug of his shoulders.
“Nah she likes you Uce,” Sefa replied from his seat. “Krys says it takes a lot for Imani to let somebody in. So if she went that far with you she’s definitely feelin you.”
“And have you even thought that maybe she don’t know what to say to you either Uce?” Jon added. “One moment you’re her best friend’s boyfriend's older brother. The next you’re face deep in her pussy. That’s a sharp ass turnaround.”
Josh hummed softly as the car pulled away from the stoplight. When he showed up to the restaurant that night the most he imagined was he would finally reveal the crush he had on Imani for the past year, a crush that formed the night he met her at Krys and Sefa’s housewarming party. Hell he didn’t even think he would’ve been lucky enough to get a kiss. But what occurred between the two of them that night was much better than what he imagined. The way Imani responded to their kisses and the way her body reacted as he feasted on her made him believe she liked him as much as he liked her. While the lack of communication from her made his confidence falter a bit he knew both of his brothers had a point.
“So any ideas on what I should do?” Josh asked, quickly glancing towards his brothers. This was unknown territory for him and he would be grateful for any advice they would have.
“Well I would suggest you stop being a bitch first off,” Jon stated. He chuckled as Josh leaned forward and punched him in the arm. “Seriously Uce. Just talk to Imani. The whole staring at her like a stalker isn’t going to help your case.”
“Don’t be too pushy and shit but let her know exactly what you want,” Sefa added. “But be sure she’s actually who you want and don’t play games with her. Because if you hurt her Krys will hurt you and I ain’t tryna get in the middle of that shit.”
Josh nodded as Sefa finally pulled into the hotel parking lot and parked in the first free space he saw. As the trio made their way towards their rooms to shower, Josh realized in order for him to get the one person he wanted, he was going to have to take matters into his own hands.
*
“You know Mani I have to commend you. You’re very talented.”
Imani stopped fluffing her curled hair and stared at Krystle’s reflection in the mirror.
“What do you mean by that?”
“Like I don’t know how you managed to avoid the man that gave you the best orgasm of your life despite working in the same company as him but somehow you’ve managed to do it. That’s real talent.”
“Shhhhh,” Imani hissed, her widened eyes darting around to see if anybody heard Krystle. “Keep your voice down!”
“Oh girl first of all ain’t nobody around to hear us. Secondly if they are they wouldn’t care. Everybody hook up with everybody in this company like it’s a season of Love Island. Hell look at me.”
“I don’t care if that’s a common occurrence Krys. I just don’t want nobody knowing my business. After all the hell you’ve given me these past few months I’m regretting that you know my business.”
Krystle laughed as she hopped off the stool she was sitting on. She crossed her arms over her chest. “You mad that I know your business but you had my boyfriend’s big brother eating your pussy in my living room on my fuckin couch? Do you know how insane that sounds?”
Imani groaned as she covered her face with her hands, her cheeks turning a deep shade of red. “I still can’t believe that happened. I don’t know what got into me.”
“Well if you mix liquor loosening you up plus being alone with your crush plus the fact that you had been celibate for the past year it was inevitable you were gonna combust both literally and figuratively,” Krystle explained with a wide grin.
Imani flipped Krystle the middle finger making the younger woman giggle again. “If anything I have you to blame for this shit even happening Krystle Washington.”
Krystle placed her hand on her chest and gasped. “What? Me?!”
“Yes you. Why the hell didn’t you tell me Josh liked me? And that he begged you to let him come to the dinner?”
Krystle’s lips curled into another sheepish grin. “I didn’t tell you because I knew if you heard it from me you would’ve thought I was making shit up or you would’ve tried to back out of the dinner. I’m just glad he finally told you so I could stop keeping the fuckin’ secret. Although you would’ve known if you were able to take a hint.”
Imani placed a hand on her hip and raised a brow. “Excuse me? What does that mean?”
“It means you’re so fuckin book smart but are oblivious to the most obvious signs when it comes to men. For some reason you’ve convinced yourself that you’re this basic forgettable plain jane and you’re not. You’re beautiful and charming and smart. Men ogle you all the time but when Josh sees you he’s damn near salivating. He’s always gawking at you when you talk. That night he made sure to always be near you at the restaurant and when we went back to our house,” Krystle explained. “And you would’ve remained clueless if he didn’t shove his tongue down your throat and up your pussy. But he finally grew some balls and made a move that I thought would at least lead y’all to the next step. Instead you’re avoiding him and refusing to talk to him.”
“I’m not avoi-”
“The moment you saw him at the gym today you sprinted out of there Mani. Quit playing.” Krystle walked in front of Imani and placed her hands on her shoulders. “C’mon now it’s me. Krys. Your best friend. Stop faking like I don’t know you and tell me what’s your problem.”
Imani bit the corner of her bottom lip as she fidgeted under Krystle’s watchful gaze, bouncing her weight from one leg and then the other. She shrugged. “I just figured it was a one night type of thing you know? Like we were both caught up in the moment and did what felt right at that time. But I didn’t want to delude myself into thinking it actually meant something. Not when he can get any woman he wants.”
Krystle shook her head with a laugh. “Like I said you are fuckin clueless. The way that man used to talk Sefa’s ear off about you before Sefa finally told me the truth proves he likes you past a one night stand. Do you know how long I tried to convince him to make a move on you? He constantly told me he would but would chicken out every fuckin time.”
Imani’s brow furrowed in confusion. “But why? He’s Jey Uso. He can have any woman he wants.”
“Yes Jey Uso can get any woman he wants. But Joshua Fatu wants you Imani,” Krystle said, emphasizing her statement with a poke to Imani’s chest. “Jey Uso is this outgoing life of the party type of character. But Josh is more reserved. He may not be a loner like Sefa but it takes a lot to warm up to people kinda like you. Y’all have similar temperaments and I think that’s why he is drawn to you. ”
“Really?”
Krystle nodded. “Also you kinda intimidate him. Sefa says for some reason Josh thinks he has to be this perfect guy to get your attention so he never felt he was in your league. By the time your birthday dinner came around I was so tired of him telling me he was gonna make a move and not do a damn thing. I almost didn’t let him come. But of course Sefa had to stick up for his brother and we know I can barely say no to him.”
“Oh trust me I know,” Imani said with a playful roll of her eyes making Krystle smack her lips.
“So I let him come to the dinner and like I predicted you two hit it off once you finally let your guard down. Now if only I can get you two to stop avoiding one another and talk some shit out.”
Imani shook her head. “Krys I don’t know. Like I hear what you’re saying but maybe too much time has passed. I’ve ignored all his DMs. I basically ignore him whenever we both are backstage. I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided I wasn’t worth the trouble and moved on.”
“How about you ask me instead of assumin’ shit?”
Imani's body stiffened at the sound of the familiar deep voice. She turned on her heel to see Josh standing behind her and Krystle. Imani’s eyes inadvertently dragged over his frame, his upper half covered in a cropped version of his newest merch shirt and grey sweatpants covering his lower body. Her gaze snapped back to his face and she felt her pulse quicken when she found him ogling her body as well, his tongue licking his bottom lip.
Krystle glanced between Imani and Josh and pursed her lips together to stifle the smile from breaking free. She grabbed her fanny pack she wore while running around preparing for the show from the table. “Wow would you look at the time? Lemme start getting ready for the show. Mani I’ll talk to you later.”
Before Imani could protest Krystle hastily made her exit leaving her alone with Josh. A shaky hand pushed an errant curl behind her ear as she silently tried to instruct her heartbeat to return to its normal beating rhythm. This was the first time they were face to face since that night at Krystle and Sefa’s house. And somehow he managed to look even sexier than he did that night.
It just wasn’t fuckin fair.
Imani parted her lips to speak when Josh reached forward and gently grabbed her wrist. Goosebumps pricked her skin as he silently led her away from the corridor that was now filling up with other WWE personnel and crew. The two eventually stepped inside an empty room. Josh flicked on the light as he closed the door and locked it. Imani subconsciously wrapped her arms around herself as she stood a great distance away from him, her mind screaming at her that it was not a good idea to be in such close proximity with him while her feet refused to move.
“Is that what you want?”
The question interrupted Imani’s thoughts. Her head jerked towards Josh. “Huh?”
“You want me to forget about that night and move onto the next woman? Is that what you want me to do Imani?”
Imani parted her lips to respond before closing them again. The question lingered in the air between the two before she exhaled softly and shook her head. “I wouldn’t blame you if you did. But no, that’s not what I want.”
Relief flickered over Josh’s face as his shoulders fully relaxed. “So why you disappear the way you did? And why ain’t you replied to any of my DMs? And why you been avoidin me since you got called up?”
Imani’s head dropped in response to Josh’s questions. He had every right to ask them but that would mean she had to finally admit what she had tried to bury.
“I guess once I came back down to reality I realized how out of character that moment between us was for me. I'm not usually in those type of situations so I didn’t know how to behave afterwards. And I truly did want to stay until you woke up but I was worried how you would react. Part of me was hoping we could build off of that moment. But my logic told me that I shouldn’t get my hopes up. That what happened the night before didn't truly mean anything.”
Josh stepped closer to Imani. “It meant something to me. And I know it meant something to you too. Didn't it?"
Imani nodded. "It did."
"You know you coulda just talked to me ya know. Instead of letting yo'self second guess everything we coulda talked things out Mani."
“I know. But I fuckin panicked. I'm used to being the logical one. Calm. Collected. But with you I just short circuit and forget how to think," Imani said with a tense laugh.
“Ay I get it. I ain’t think it was gonna go as far as it did either. But there’s nothing to be ashamed about. We grown as hell and are attracted to each other. I don’t regret a fuckin thing that happened that night. Do you?”
Memories flooded Imani’s brain of that night: The way Josh’s lips perfectly molded with hers. How his touch set her skin aflame and plucked her in all the right places. The way his tongue made her back arch with desire before she was bombarded with the best orgasm she ever experienced. The way his doe like eyes glistened with adoration and desire when he looked at her afterwards. How perfect it felt to fall asleep in his arms.
Imani slowly shook her head. “No.”
Her eyes instinctively lifted to meet his and she inhaled a sudden breath when she saw how close Josh was to her, his chest pressing against hers lightly. Her body was barricaded between his muscular frame and the wall. His intense and unwavering gaze studied her face and his thumb gently traced her jawline causing a stuttered breath to flow from her mouth.
“I missed you.”
Without another word, Josh captured Imani’s lips in a heated kiss. She felt her resolve crumble like a pile of bricks on a demolished building as her arms immediately wrapped around his neck to pull him closer to her. Their lips moved together in tandem as Josh’s large hands grabbed Imani’s hips to hold her in place. Imani’s soft moan flowed through her parted lips allowing Josh’s tongue to slide into her mouth. The moment their tongues touched Josh’s deep groan filled the room, the sound making Imani dizzy with lust as she felt a familiar throb between her legs that was covered in the pink and white floral dress she wore.
The jarring sound of Imani’s phone alarm interrupted the moment. Imani begrudgingly sighed at the noise and detached her lips from Josh’s. “I have to go get my makeup done for the show tonight,” she stated quietly, silently wishing she had the courage to say fuck her responsibilities so she could continue making out with Josh.
Josh silently cursed as he quickly remembered they were indeed at work. He quickly pecked Imani’s lips before reluctantly pulling away. He grabbed her hand as he started walking her towards the door. “I would say we can continue this after the show but I gotta head straight to the airport after the show tonight. But I’ll be in Florida in a couple of weeks after I get back from this overseas tour. So lemme take you out.”
“Like out on a date?” Imani asked with a slight stutter.
Josh nodded. “Yeah like a date.”
“When? And where? And what time? And how should I-” Imani trailed off as Josh chuckled softly. She folded her arms over her chest and pouted. “What’s so damn funny?”
“You are bae. Krys was right - you do like to be in control of everything don’t you?”
Imani rolled her eyes. “I’m not trying to be in control. I just need to know more details so I can be better prepared. That’s all.”
Josh turned to face Imani and leaned against the door. Amusement twinkled in his stare as he looked at Imani before he reached forward and grabbed her arm gently to pull her body into his. A soft whimper fell from her full lips as her groin collided with his before he grabbed a handful of her ass and kissed her again. Imani’s smaller hands pressed against his chest to hold herself steady as she returned the kiss with as much intensity as she could muster. By the time they pulled away both of their lips were swollen and Josh’s eyes held a glazed over gleam while Imani’s chest heaved up and down with every breath she took.
“Just let me take charge this time bae. So what you say?”
Imani’s brain screeched at her that she needed more information and leaving all of the decision making to Josh would not bode well. However, her remaining thoughts quickly disappeared as she watched his eyes drag over her frame again as he simultaneously squeezed her ass.
“Ok. I’ll go out with you,” she agreed.
Josh smiled. “See how easy that was?” he asked. He laughed again when Imani playfully sucked her teeth.
Josh opened the door and glanced around the hallway. Once he determined the coast was clear, he pulled Imani out of the room. He wrapped her up in a tight hug and pecked her temple, inhaling the familiar citrusy floral perfume permeating in her hair.
“Just trust me. You won't regret it," Josh whispered into her hair. He pulled away and with one last look turned to sprint down the hallway towards the locker room while Imani stared at his retreating form, her fingers softly caressing her lips.

24. the end
it’s the next day. yesterday, you were terrified to open your phone, dreading the harsh reality you expected from the fans. the whole time, you couldn’t shake off the terrible thoughts about the future of the café, but you tried to keep your cool. you spent the night at wonbin’s place, and he kept you company, constantly reassuring you that everything would be okay. but if things went wrong, then what? what happens next?
while eating breakfast, you glance at wonbin, who’s sitting next to you, and finally ask the question that’s been weighing on your mind. “bin, your company would force us to break up if they don’t approve of me, right?”
he barely hesitates. “y/n,” he says firmly, looking at you. “we’ve already talked about this before. stop thinking about it because it’s not going to happen.” then, as if to emphasize his point, he pulls the hair tie off his wrist and gathers your messy hair into a ponytail.
“whatever happens, we. are. not. breaking. up. i wont let it happen.” his voice is steady, full of determination.
the room goes silent for a few seconds until you reach over to pick up your phone on the counter.
“this is killing me,” you let out a shaky breath. “i’m going to check twitter.”
wonbin exhales deeply. “alright, but remember y/n, i’m always going to be here by your side no matter what the result is. i’m really just hoping for the best at this point.”
with a lump in your throat, you open the app, expecting to see nothing but harsh words. except… they aren’t there. instead, you’re met with an overwhelming amount of kindness.
your hand flies up to cover your mouth. “oh.”
wonbin immediately tenses. “what? what’s happening? is it bad?” his voice laced with concern.
shaking your head, you stand up, barely able to contain your excitement. before you know it, you’re throwing your arms around him. “i’m so happy, i’m so happy.” your words come out muffled against his shoulder.
he lets out a breath of relief, hugging you tighter. “so i’m guessing it’s good?”
you pull back just enough to look at him, eyes shining. “there’s still a few bad ones, but i saw so many positive responses. does this mean….”
he studies your face, smiling as he wipes away the stray tears that escaped your shiny eyes. then, as if he can’t help himself, he leans in, closing the space between you. his lips brush softly against yours—gentle, but full of relief and love. warmth spreads through your chest, and you smile into the kiss, your heart melting.
this is it. no more hiding. no more fear. it’s just the two of you, together, just as you should be.
when you pull away, he rests his forehead against yours, a breathy chuckle escaping him. “yes. yes it does mean what you think it does. i’m so excited,” he murmurs, his thumb grazing your cheek.
his eyes soften as he cups your face. “we don’t have to hide anymore. i can hold your hand in public, take you on dates, and post you without worrying about what people will say.” he pauses, his lips curling into a small grin. “rrr y/n. i’m glad you’re stuck with me now. i’m never letting you go.”
you roll your eyes, but your heart flutters all the same. “i wouldn’t want to be stuck with any other black cat anyway.” with a smirk, you pinch his cheek in return.

Sabo x Reader
~Just as a hypothetical question~
Part 6. Other Parts Word count: 6,1k words (Dear God) Short summary: There's drama, there's chaos, things get a little bit serious at one point, and then, a little bit of smut sprinkled on top. Basically: Reader+Sabo+Miscommunication= solved... kinda. AN: I've risen from hell, aka first semester of law & political science courses. In all seriousness, I'm so so grateful for the wonderful support all of you have given my cheesy little fic. I really appreciate the nice and understanding comments while I've been away. I had so much fun writing this last chapter whenever I had time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did <3 (Not proof read, will fix any spelling errors after I get some sleep)
MDNI 18+
___
Shit.
Y/N was practically sprinting through the hallways as soon as she had left the library. She must have looked insane to anyone that saw her.
She messed up, she messed up big time!
Not only did Y/N snap at the man who potentially wanted to torture her, possibly even kill her.
No, she also left the book on the table. The book that had “Outdoor Survival” spelled with bold, bright orange letters on the front!
And Sabo wasn’t stupid, she knew that. By this point he must already have figured out what she was planning, and was probably plotting some kind of sick, twisted way of making sure she couldn’t leave.
What if he locks her in a cell and throws away the key? Deprived her of ever seeing the sunlight again?
No, Sabo wouldn’t really do that. Right?
Y/N let out a nervous laughter as she felt a shiver run down her spine. This wasn’t the time for guessing, she couldn’t risk staying a day longer at this godawful base. She just needed to gather a few more things, and then she was ready to start her new life.
Preferably far far away from the sadistic blond devil that took pleasure in stalking and tormenting her.
As she pushed the front door to the base open, unwelcome thoughts sneaked into her mind.
A gorgeous, handsome, honey-voiced devil, with strong arms that could easily pin her down so he-
“NO NO NO! Stop fantasizing about him, you stupid, stupid girl! That’s insane behavior, you know it is never-” Y/N choked on her words “never going to happen...”
A loud sigh escaped her lips as her shoulders dropped forward, forehead leaning against the wall outside the building. Was this really a good idea? In truth, she felt completely unprepared to live out the rest of her days in the wilderness.
Maybe life as the Chief of Staff’s captive wouldn’t be so bad?
“Ha-ha, I must be losing my mind.” Y/N laughed nervously as she pushed herself up from her leaning position.
Staying wasn’t an option. But neither was going out into the forest unprepared. She looked around the busy town square.
“Now, where do I find something sharp…”
___
“What are those two doing today?” Koala pondered as she looked out over the town.
She was resting her head against her hand, arm leaning over the windowsill, as her eyes closely followed Jane Doe. The girl had been running around the town for the past hour, gathering one strange thing after the other.
Just as the girl slipped into another alleyway, Koala’s attention was caught by Sabo jumping out from a window, quickly moving over the rooftops with his steel pipe on his back. And she knew that could only spell trouble. Which meant, more paperwork for her.
Her so-called partner had taken his newfound hobby, stalking, to a whole other level these past few days. In a way it was kinda endearing seeing Sabo run around like a lovesick puppy. Some of the Revs had even started a pool, placing bets on how long it would take before those two finally got together… or until Jane Doe flat out rejected Sabo once and for all.
Koala found that highly unlikely though. The girl was obviously crushing hard, no matter how hard she tried to hide it. Koala even suspected that the poor girl was so nervous that she was planning on running away, which would achieve absolutely nothing since Sabo would find her straight away.
“But what do I know? Maybe this is just what happens when you have that kind of upbringing.…” Koala sighed “Still, Nobles are fucking weird.”
___
“Oh Dear God, that was a close call.” Y/N sighed as she turned the key to her bedroom door.
She had just managed to avoid Koala’s attempt to “have a talk”. Something she desperately wanted to avoid, because in her mind, “having a talk” could only mean one thing…
“I really hope Koala hasn’t found out too.” She said under her breath as she entered her bedroom.
"Find out about what?"
An audible ‘eep’ escaped Y/N mouth as she heard the familiar voice, before she quickly put her hands over her mouth and took a step back from shock, her back hitting the now closed door.
"How d-did you get in here… t-the door was locked." She said with a shaky voice as she eyed the blond man sitting on her bed.
"Window." Sabo shrugged. As if what he said wasn’t insane, or not even acknowledging that he had broken into her room!
"We're on the third floor.” Y/N stuttered, still not completely comprehending her current situation.
Why? Why was this happening now? Why was he here? She was just coming back to gather her things, and then she was supposed to leave.
She felt her heart beating faster as she glared at Sabo.
"Breathe Angel, I was just returning what I took this morning…” He chuckled as he walked over to her dresser and put her neatly folded underwear on it.
‘Okay, great! Now, please leave, please.’ she prayed quietly in her head.
“And I have a question for you, so I waited until you got back." Sabo said with a bright smile, but she saw something flicker in his eye, and that couldn’t be good.
"Q-question?" She stuttered as he started to walk towards her " Wait, don't-"
"Are you planning to run away, Y/N?" He was standing right in front of her, keeping her trapped between him and the door.
‘Wait, no-’ She felt her mind spiraling out of control. That name. Her name… No, no no no no.
"How do you-" A finger was placed over her mouth.
“Aa-aa, my question first, Y/N.”
“I don’t- that’s not-”
“It’s okay, I promise I’m not mad. But you don’t need to lie anymore Y/N.” Sabo gave her a kind, deceiving smile.
“Stop saying it!” She bursted out, trying to push him back. But he wasn’t bugging, instead he only moved closer to her.
“Oh, but it’s such a pretty name. Much better than Jane Doe. Y/N, Y/N, Y/N…” He chuckled with a dreamy expression, twirling her hair between two fingers.
Y/N could only stare at Sabo with horror as she took in the almost obsessive look in his eyes and the faint smile over his lips. He knew he had won their “game”, and now he was acting like a cat, playing with his prey.
She could feel her breath quicken, how the panic spread through her mind… And honestly, though embarrassing to admit, she felt a little bit aroused. Which was a whole other issue in itself that she really needed to deal with if she somehow got out of this situation alive.
Because, she really shouldn’t be turned on by this!
Sabo let go of her hair and grazed his gloved hand against her cheek, making her flinch. To her surprise her reaction made him take a step back, giving her much needed space to breathe. He sighed and furrowed his eyebrows, almost making it look like he was concerned.
“Please don’t worry, sweetheart. You don’t have to hide anymore. I personally made sure those people won’t come looking for you.” Sabo smiled, sounding kinda proud?
“People? Wait- What did you do?” Y/N was feeling a little confused. Had he really… He couldn’t have, right?
"It was quite easy actually, don’t know why I didn’t do this from the start. It would have saved me so. much. pent. up. frustration." His voice came out strained, almost like a moan.
"I just made a few visits to some very disgusting bugs, before the information I gathered pointed me in the right direction."
‘Disgusting bugs’ Nobles? Right direction? No-
She closely studied Sabo as he mindlessly wandered around the room, continuing his explanation.
"Your dad is a fucking coward, by the way. I barely stepped foot inside the castle before he surrendered both the country and more importantly, your name, in exchange for his own life.
You should have seen the look on his face when I introduced myself as his future son-in-law, it was fucking priceless." He laughed, wiping a tear from his eye.
Y/N couldn’t take it anymore. This man. Correction, this insane man had by himself broken into the castle of an enemy country and threatened the king of said country, just so he could learn what her name was?
For what reason? So he could torture and then execute her with good conscious that he had done a thorough investigation beforehand? And what did he mean by ‘future son-in-law’?
She let out a nervous laughter, catching Sabo’s attention and making him walk towards her again.
"Oh Angel, please don't be scared. We aren't going to meet the fuckers who put you through all of that anymore, I'll make sure of it. It will just be the two of us from now on." Sabo said with a calm tone as he tried pulling her into a hug, which she quickly dodged, so she was now standing in the middle of the room.
Holy fuck-
His statement made her realize what Sabo had been trying to do from the start. He was planning on keeping her alive. To be played with as his personal toy for the rest of her life.
And what must be a very deranged part of herself actually felt relieved over that fact. She would at least get to see his gorgeous face every day. Even if it was when he was taking pleasure in torturing her, or something…
Dear God, that was so freaking messed up!
Sabo brought his hand to her cheek, giving her that kind, deceiving smile. She flinched away when she felt the cool touch of leather on her skin. His smile dropped, a confused wrinkle appearing between his brows.
"Y/N, it isn’t me you're scared of, right?" He asked, giving her a serious look.
"No- I'm-" She took a step back, but Sabo quickly grabbed a hold of her wrist, pulling her towards him.
"Yes you are. Why?" He asked again, the grip around her wrist becoming firmer.
Y/N looked around the room in a panic, her eyes landing on the doorknob. Why the fuck didn’t she just open the door and run away when she had the chance? Why didn’t she think about that before, you know… she was trapped and unable to escape.
She needed to use what little brain capacity she had left and figure something out. Think think think!
‘If a man ever bothers you, just pretend to faint. That’s what all the other ladies your age do.’
Her mother’s words swirled through her mind. Could that really work? Y/N pondered on the crazy idea only for a second before she decided that it was probably the best she could come up with in this situation.
She saw how Sabo quirk his eyebrow and loosened his grip a little just as she closed her eyes, put her hand against her forehead, let out an audible gasp and let her body fall limp to the floor.
___
For a moment, Sabo could only stare flabbergasted at the “fainted” Angel on the floor. He certainly hadn’t expected her to do…whatever it was that she was trying to do.
But he liked that she kept surprising him with her silly little acts, even if they still really needed to have a serious conversation about her running away… and you, allegedly being scared of him? What reason could she have to be scared? Had he been a little too blunt with his explanation about how he found out what her name was?
No, he couldn’t have. He even purposely left out the bloody part, she didn’t need to know about that. And to be fair, he barely touched those disgusting bugs that had described “the princess” as some kind of mindless trophy. Sabo had just made it very clear that he couldn’t stand that kind of misogynistic thinking… with his fists.
He pondered Y/N’s reason for being scared for a few more moments, before he glanced down at her and saw how she was peeking at him through her half squinted eyes. And how she abruptly closed them when she was caught.
"She so fucking adorable" he whispers to himself.
Talking was important, but it could wait for a little bit. How could he not play along when she was acting so incredibly cute.
"Oh no, she fainted. I better put her on the bed." Sabo said in a sarcastic tone as he lifted her off the floor.
He noticed how Y/N shifted in his arms, still trying her best to keep her act up. He carefully placed her on the bed and just looked at her for a moment.
Cute.
"Hmm, what’s that thing they do in fairytales?” Sabo sighed, before he leaned down close to her ear and whispered “Right…maybe she will wake up if I kiss her?"
Within a second Y/N opened her eyes and shoved him away. A bright red blush had spread over her face, and he couldn’t help but to chuckle at her adorable reaction.
"Oh look, I didn’t even have to kiss her for it to work. Just. Like. A. Princess."
"PLEASE DON’T HURT ME!" She exclaimed as she sat straight up on the bed, putting her arms in front of her.
‘Ehm- what?’ Sabo was suddenly very confused about what was happening.
"Hurt you? Why the fuck would I do that?" He asked.
"Because you are a Revolutionary, you disdain Nobles. You enjoy torturing them for fun, before you drag them to the guillotine. And you make them read your manifesto over and over, and over. And I'm a freaking Princess, daughter of a cruel, greedy tyrant! Of course you’re going to fucking hurt me!"
Sabo stared at her with a blank face for a second, before he started to laugh hysterically, bending over with his hands on his stomach.
"Pfft, hahaha—oh my god, this is too good to be true, hahaha," he laughed, tears lining his eyes. "Fuck- I can't breathe."
It must have been a minute or two, but he finally calmed himself down after hearing her insane reasoning. God, everything made so much sense now.
"Is this why you spent the last two weeks pretending to have amnesia? You actually believe in those crazy rumors?" Sabo chuckled as he wiped a tear from his eye "Oh, but the thing about the manifesto is true though. We use it to re-educate all kinds of people that have a messed up world view."
"But mother told me-"
"Well, your mom isn’t exactly the brightest. She thought I was a noble coming over for tea when I jumped over the castle gates. That’s how I got in."
"You do kinda look like a noble." Y/N said, still visibly taken aback by his reaction.
"Yeah... But I also had a fucking metal pipe stuck to my back, which should have set some alarm bells ringing in her head. But she greeted me at the front door herself, happy to have a guest."
"Mother, dear God." she sighed "Wait- why did you have a mental pipe?"
"Uhmm... no reason. Don't worry about it." Sabo gave her a closed eyed smile.
The room fell silent.
He felt an anxious feeling growing in his chest. Whatever her reasoning was, this poor girl had still been afraid that he was going to hurt her.
God, he was such an idiot. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she never wanted to see him again, considering how he had acted these last weeks. The thought of that scared him.
No, either way he needed to apologize. Maybe there was a chance that she would forgive him. And even if she didn’t, he would accept that.
Sabo carefully walked over to the bed, and when he saw that Y/N didn’t move away, he sat down next to her.
"I’m sorry Y/N. I never want to harm you in any way. Fuck, I feel horrible for putting you through that. You must have been so anxious the entire time. And I just thought we were playing a silly game. I promise, I never wanted you to feel that." He said, clenching his fist together.
All he could do was stare down on his knees. Sabo had never felt more ashamed than how he felt right this moment.
Then, he felt a soft hand touch his forearm.
“I believe you.” Y/N’s sweet voice stated, making him look straight at her in shock.
“Why?” He stuttered, still not believing she was actually forgiving him.
“Hmmm… Because I want to.” She said, giving him a bright smile.
Sabo felt how his chest grew warm, like it did every time he saw that smile.
Did she not understand the severity of this situation? It would make sense considering how she had been treated all her life. He needed her to understand that it was okay for her to be angry. That it was okay if she never wanted to see him again. That she was free to feel whatever she wanted to feel.
“But I stalked you for two weeks. I trapped you in a supply closet. I pressured you about your name over and over. I even stole your underwear. It’s only logical if you hate me, and-”
“But I don’t hate you. And I do believe you don’t want to hurt me.” Y/N sighed, before a serious expression fell over her face. “Look, have there been times I’ve been scared that something bad was going to happen to me if any of you found out who I am? Yes. But it’s a normal feeling to have when all your life you've been told that the Revolutionary Army tortures Nobles, right?”
Sabo gave her a small nod, but stayed quiet and waited for her to continue talking.
“But for some reason, even though you have taken pleasure in tormenting me, and don’t try to deny it, there was still a part of me that believed that you never actually wanted to do me any harm. That none of the people in this base wanted to hurt me. And I was driving myself crazy trying to explain that feeling away, Stockholm Syndrome and stuff like that… But I do believe you.”
“But-” Sabo started to say, but was caught off by a finger flicking his forehead.
"Ughh, no more but! It's okay, I actually wasn’t that scared until you told me you were the Second in Command. And even after that, a part of me still didn’t believe you wanted to kill me." Y/N laughed, which was a reaction not quite fitting her statement
"You thought I wanted to kill you?!" Sabo exclaimed, feeling even more embarrassed over how delusional he had been.
She nodded in response, letting out a small giggle.
"And I followed you around like a fucking stalker. Shit, do you know how close I was to breaking into your room last night?" He asked, feeling a warm flush spread over his face.
"You were close to doing what?"
"Uh-"
“Pfft- hahaha. It’s kinda fun seeing you embarrassed for once.” Y/N snickered, making Sabo feel relieved.
This was good. By some godsent miracle, she had actually forgiven him and was somehow dealing with the whole situation surprisingly well. He had been given a second chance, and he wasn’t going to screw this up.
All he needed to do now was figure out if she had the same feelings as he did. And this time he was going with brutal honesty.
___
It felt weird. That the small hope that had been inside her during this entire time was actually true. That Sabo never wanted to hurt her. She knew that the moment she heard his sincere words. Pure relife.
And thank god for that, otherwise she would have looked pretty stupid for sticking around this place so long. Haha, wouldn’t that have been a fun ending to her story. “The naive princess who was tricked and fell in love with the cruel enemy.”
No, she liked this ending much better. The ending where she was just a person, not chained to a title, who was free to love whoever she wanted to.
Even if the love in question was directed towards an undeniably handsome man, but with a sadistic streak. Because there was no denying that fact, Y/N knew that he genuinely took pleasure in tormenting her and seeing her embarrassed. And she was slowly starting to accept that she actually enjoyed it too. Not that Sabo needed to know that.
But she wanted to tell him about the feelings she’s been keeping locked away for these past few weeks. What was she supposed to do? There’s rules and etiquette to follow when it comes to these things. She couldn’t just flat out tell him-
“I love you.” Sabo’s statement cut through her train of thoughts.
“Wha-” Y/N was taken aback. Did he just-
“No scratch that.” He said as he moved closer to her, taking hold of her hand. “What I’m feeling for you is probably closer to an obsession at this point, and I know that sounds like a bad thing, but I promise it’s not. I feel a constant urge to be near you and keep you safe and make you feel loved and cared for and-”
Sabo paused, and she believed she had never seen him look this serious. How could he just say all those things so bluntly? She felt her heart beating faster, and how a warm flush spread over her cheeks.
“And I need to know if I’m just delusional, or if you like me too. Because I was certain you did, up until the moment I realized I’ve been a complete idiot during the entire time I’ve known you. And if you don’t, then that’s okay. I promise I will stop tormenting you... But if there’s even the smallest chance that I can be with you, I need to know.” He said, almost sounding desperate.
Their faces were so close, Y/N could feel Sabo’s breath on her lips. His hand had left hers and traveled to her waist, carefully keeping it there and moving her slightly closer to him.
She put her hand against his chest, surprised to feel that his heart was beating as fast as hers. Her body felt hot and she was trying her hardest to formulate a response, and before she knew it a single word slipped past her lips.
“Yes.” She said with a shaky voice, and felt how Sabo’s grip grew firmer on her waist.
“Yes what?” He asked, an almost pleading look in his eyes.
“...I love you.” Y/N whispered, barely audible for anyone but Sabo to hear.
“Thank God, you don’t know how much I’ve carved to hear you say those words.” He said with a relieved smile, making her heart flutter.
She hardly had time to catch her breath before she felt Sabo’s hand snake to the back of her hair, pulling her into a kiss. It caught her a little off guard, but Y/N felt safe as he took the lead, guiding her down on her back.
As the hand on her waist started to rub small circles through the fabric of her shirt, the kiss grew more intense, and she felt how the now familiar knot in her stomach started to form. She wanted more, to feel more, be closer to him. Her body was moving on its own, her hand grazing over his chest, up to his jaw and gently stroking her thumb over his cheek.
Suddenly Sabo pulled away, breaking the kiss. She could see a soft pink tint over his face as he ran a hand through his hair.
“Fuck… Okay, you need to tell me now if you want to stop. Because we can, if you want to. But I’m barely keeping it together right now. So, do you want me to continue?” He asked with a heavy breath.
Y/N could only nod, making Sabo chuckle a little.
“Angel, I need to hear you say it.” He said, giving her a reassuring smile.
“...yes.” She answered quietly, growing more and more flustered.
“Hm? Yes, what?” A mischievous smile spread over Sabo’s lips as he cupped her chin and tilted her face up towards his.
“I- I want to continue.” Y/N managed to say. She didn’t want this to end now, before it even started.
“Good, that was all I needed to hear. I promise I will take really good care of you.” Sabo stated as he let go of her chin and leaned back so he was sitting on his knees in front of her.
How did he look so calm and in control? While she was barely keeping it together. Wasn’t they supposed to continue? Why did he move away?
“God, your thoughts are written all over your face. So eager, Angel.” He chuckled, as her face turned red.
She watched as Sabo took his jacket off and loosened the carvant around his neck. She could see how his eyes roamed over her body, something flickering in his gaze as they met hers. She couldn’t figure out what he wanted her to do.
“I don’t know what-” She started to say, but Sabo cut her off.
“Oh, I’m sorry sweetheart. I was just a little caught up in thoughts about how cute you look when you're flustered. Don’t worry, you don’t need to think right now, I’ll help you.” He stated. “Now, come here and help me take my gloves off.”
“Okay?” Y/N answered, a little confused about his request, but she moved closer to him and started to pull one of his gloves off, but Sabo moved his hand away.
“No, no Angel. Use your mouth.” He said with a grin over his lips.
“W-what?”
“Well, I can keep them on if you want to… But I promise it's going to feel much better without the gloves. You want it to feel nice, don’t you?” Sabo asked, and she nodded in response “Okay, so take them off, just like I told you to do it.”
Dear God, I’m about to do the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done in my life.
This devilish man must have some secret power over her, because why else would she be doing this. She cautiously eyed the gloved hands as she swallowed what was left of her pride, and slowly started to tug the glove off with her teeth. The taste of leather felt bitter on her lips as she somehow managed to work the first glove of his hand.
Without giving her a second to breath, a finger pushed against her mouth, waiting for her to start. Y/N glared at Sabo, but he only gave her a smirk in response. The other glove didn’t come off as easily, and truth be told, she suspected that he was making it harder for her on purpose.
“There. Happy?” She asked in a snarky tone as she tugged the glove of his hand.
“Very.” He snickered back.
“I don’t understand why you enjoy making me feel embarrassed so much.” Y/N said with a small pout.
“Because it’s fun seeing your cute reactions... And because I know you like feeling that way.” Sabo said as he leaned a little bit closer to her.
“I- I do not!” She exclaimed, moving back further up on the bed.
“No, you do.” he said in a calm tone as he started to unbutton his shirt. “I know because you always rub your thighs together when I make you flustered. And that’s usually a good sign”
Y/N tried to move further away, but suddenly felt a tug around her ankle making her fall flat on her back. She felt how Sabo’s hand started to travel up her leg, as he moved over her, one knee placed between her legs, pressing against her.
And dear god, just that little amount of much needed pressure against the right spot felt so good. An airy moan escaped her lips as the small knot in her abdomen grew.
“Fuck… you make the most angelic sounds when you’re needy.” Something dark flickered in Sabo’s eyes. “God, I’m going to have so. much. fun. with. you.”
___
If heaven made a sound, he was pretty sure that this is what it would sound like.
Sabo’s mind was clouded by his Angel’s sweet sobs as he continued to flick his tongue over her clit, moving his fingers inside of her in a steady rhythm.
He had lost count of how many times he had made her cum by this point, but seeing the effects it had on her made every orgasm worth it. Legs twitching, hair clinging to her forehead, tears lining her eyes.
It was like he was looking at a piece of art.
Sabo knew he was being cruel. But the sound of her choked out voice in between airy moans and heavy breaths were fucking intoxicating. He could probably do this for hours, if he wasn’t burning up with his own greedy need.
The need to pin her under him. The need to finally feel her clench around him. The need to put marks all over her body. Proof of how much he loved and adored her. Proof that she was his.
And although he knew that he shouldn’t be thinking it, he felt an overwhelming need to turn her into a completely broken mess.
But he also knew that it was probably time to give her a break, let her catch her breath and rest against his chest-
“Sabo- please~” Y/N whimpered, clenching around his fingers.
Fuck-
How was he supposed to ignore that? In the past hour, making her cum had become like an addiction to him. He craved to hear her cry out in pleasure as he helped her reach that high over and over again.
Just one more.
“Oh, I know it’s a lot, sweetheart. You’re being so good for me. Just one more and then we’re done, I promise.” He heard how Y/N’s voice hitched as he quickened the pace of his fingers.
Wet sounds and loud moans filled his head, melting inside every time his name slipped past her lips in small cries of pleasure. She was squirming, basically grinding against his face.
And Sabo loved every second of it. He loved that he could make her this way. That he could completely shut her brain off and make her lose herself in the pleasure he was giving her.
And as he felt his Angel’s body tense up once more, Sabo couldn’t resist the urge to gently bite her inner thigh.
He carefully pulled his fingers out and leaned back to look at the beautiful picture in front of him. A red flush over her cheeks. Puffy lips, probably from her biting down on them. Chest slowly rising and falling with every breath.
“Fucking angelic.” Sabo moaned, taking one more good look before he laid down next to her.
He gently pulled her towards him, letting her head rest on his chest as he ran his fingers through her hair, carefully untangling the mess he had created.
“How are you feeling Angel? It wasn’t too much, was it?” He asked, placing his other hand on her thigh, rubbing soft circles on her skin.
“Nice, so nice~ “ Y/N answered in a soft voice, lightly grazing over his chest with her hand.
“Nice? Maybe we should keep going then-” he felt a slap against his chest “I was just joking, sweetheart. It’s late, and I plan on keeping you trapped with me in this room for at least a few days, so you’re going to need the rest.”
“What?” she asked, already half asleep.
“Huh? Oh, nothing. Don’t worry about it, I’ll show you tomorrow.”
___
This must be the most wonderful-
Wait, no. We’re not doing that again. Last time ended in disaster.
Y/N stretched her legs out as she opened her eyes. God, she felt sore.
She mindlessly put her arms over her head to relieve the ache, but felt how her hand hit something. She looked up, horrified to see her fist pushed in right under Sabo's jaw, quickly moving it away.
“Well, good morning to you too.” Sabo said as he stroked the place she had hit. “Was I really that mean last night that I deserved being woken up by a punch?”
“I’M SO SORRY, I DIDN’T-” Y/N stopped herself a thought back on the previous night, and on how much her body ached this very moment. “You know what? You do deserve that.”
“Ouch! My poor heart.” He answered in a dramatic voice, placing his hands over his chest.
All of this was so absurd, she couldn’t help but to laugh.
Yesterday when she woke up, she had been fully prepared to run away. Almost convinced that the man now laying in her bed wanted to drag her to the guillotine. Afraid that she was going to spend the rest of her life camping out in the middle of the woods. But nothing of that had happened.
Funny how things turn out sometimes. Still, there were some things that needed to be cleared up.
“So, what happens now? I mean, didn’t you say that my so-called father basically surrendered yesterday? Doesn’t that mean that the revolution is over?” Y/N asked.
“Hmm, yeah, kinda… Now it’s just the boring administrative work left. You know, sentencing the bad guys to prison, relocating funds, drafting a new constitution, and whatnot.” Sabo said with a shrug “Oh, but don’t worry. Koala can probably handle that alone for the first few days. We’re not leaving this room unless we really, really need to.”
“You’re not keeping me trapped in here. I need food, and a bath.” She scoffed.
“But I thought you loved me?” He answered with a hurt expression. “Now that I think about it, maybe it’s better if we moved to my room instead. I have snacks we can eat, and a shower.”
“That’s not- nevermind.” Y/N sighed. “We’re getting sidetracked… I mean, what happens after all the administrative stuff is done?”
“Oh, we're going back to Baltigo. The island itself might not be so fun, but don’t worry, everyone at the main base will welcome you with open arms. And you can meet Hack, and Dragon, and all the other members. And you can of course move in with me if you want to, but we can also get you your own room if you would prefer that-”
“Wait, wait, wait. You understand that I’m staying here, right?” She stated.
“What?” Sabo asked with a dumbfounded look.
___
Koala was standing on the stern, looking back at the Island they had lived on for the past month. She thought fondly of the people they had helped liberate from the tyrannical ruler of the country. It always felt good leaving after a successful mission.
“We need to turn around.” Sabo said, suddenly standing next to her.
“FUCK- where did you come from.” She exclaimed.
“Koala, tell them to turn the ship around.” He said in a deadly serious tone.
“Why?” She asked, already knowing what this was about.
“I forgot something…”
“Mhmm, and what would that something be?” Koala said as she rolled her eyes.
“A stubborn brat who doesn’t know what’s best for her.” Sabo answered through gritted teeth.
“Ah-ah, careful there Mr. Chief of Staff for the Revolutionary Army. Kinda sounds like you want to take away someone’s free will.” She teased, earring a scoff in response. “You want Y/N to live free, right? To make her own choices?”
“...yes.”
“Exactly. So stop pouting like some spoiled rich kid. Besides, Dragon already agreed that it was safe for you to go visit her between missions. You’ll see her again in two months.”
“But what if she misses me and I’m not there?” Sabo asked in a panicked voice.
“She’ll write you a letter!”
“What if she burns the house down?”
“Dear God, have mercy and give me strength… Oh wait, strength.” Koala chuckled as she slammed her fist down at the top of Sabo’s head. “Stop being an idiot”
She glared at Sabo as he rubbed the spot on his head, before she saw him looking back towards the Island.
“Two months…Just two months.” he sighed, with a faint smile spreading over his lips.

I decided to give a go to @niennanir’s lovely print-your-own-fic recipe on my Inside and Out as a test run and I’m quite pleased with the results as a first pass :D
I wish I’d taken a few more process pictures but there was a slight lull as I had to go shopping for 12x12 cardstock lol, but! I do have a couple closeups/extras that I added for funsies :D
I went with freehanding the title and I think in the future I would opt to not do that lol, at least not without a printed template. That said, both LibreOffice and SAI refuse to recognize my SCII fonts >:0 If you notice on the first page, I used the Ace Attorney font in italic haha, it’s an okay alternative even if it’s not what I actually want |0 I am happy with the gold detailing tho :3c
I did have an unconscionable amount of fun freehanding the ship caption tho ahh <3 <3 Immediate happy stims upon completion, their names together look so pretty ♥ Credit to Zarla’s original minicomic on that one :3
I also managed to get the last sentence of the fic isolated on the last page thanks to the formatting haha ♪
I was also able to add a bookmark! Ma happened to have a couple very thin ribbons to choose from and red ended up complementing the green very prettily!
It reminds me of VUX tongues hehehehe ❤️💕💖💞
#What do I tag this lol#SCII#I am continually and incurably in love with papercrafts <3#Hard to believe it's been since Pokemon Homestyle since I've given anything a go! These darn talented artists inspiring me! Lol#Honestly tho I would absolutely recommend this project :D The prep work is manageable and friendly and the action itself is enjoyable#Depending on how much you enjoy repetitive motions haha ♪ Folding and creasing the pages was very relaxing to me :)#I went for my own fic as a first run since y'know - I have very direct access to it lol#Plus it'd be less sad if I messed something up - I want to do right by my favourites from other artists! I'm allowed to make my own mess lol#Also finally convinced me to return to the loving embrace of LibreOffice after like a decade away lol#I just never had a reason to redownload it! Wordpad does exactly what I want 95% of the time!#But it couldn't do columns so okayyyyy fiiiiine I'll get it again (lol) I do rather like it :)#There's still some things I'd change! I'm sure you can see from the pages where you can see both edges that the layout's a bit uhmmmm#Skewed? Corner-heavy? Lol just a matter of changing the borders :) LibreOffice's measurements are wack tho :P#But I fully intend to do this again! :D Print a few test sheets first >:3c Legitimately looking forward to it!#Probably gonna do another one of mine next before I give a go to someone else's I'd like to keep#I have ideas for how to improve! And better and more plentiful supplies! It makes me want to make! :D#Oh yeah and being in the book-making mood reminded me of one of the Vargas-as-a-psuedo-bible ideas I had but didn't put anywhere lol#If I may posit for your consideration: Before as the Old Testament and After as the New Testament :3c#I'd Absolutely buy two versions - And a full version for the record lol I would easily own multiple copies of physical!Vargas lol#Fun thought to me hehehehe ♪♫

#having a day full of mixed feelings#I suppose this is how life goes#I'm officially done with my Bachelor's degree as of today#obviously I'm proud of myself for the accomplishment and I was excited to be celebrated today#it was a long and difficult road and there were many times where I didn't think I'd live to see it through but I made it#I'm the first person in my family to get this degree and I was really looking forward to having today be my day#I had a really lovely morning and then things kind of waned#there were a few arguments. someone I spent the day with repeatedly made negative comments about something I care about#it felt awful. I know it was intended as more of a playful jab than anything but I directly asked for the comments to stop and they didn't#it especially hurt that it was a fandom thing and the person is so invested in their own fandoms yet they felt it fair to step on mine#even though I've never done that to them#then people kept talking over me and acted like I was wrong for trying to interject to finish my own sentences#also as I said in the last post I was deeply upset by how my family members spoke of my 12 year old cousin#she's just a kid and some of our close family members have such a nasty opinion of her. she's so young and she's had a rough few years#but it seems like no one except my brother and I are willing to give her any grace#I think everyone else has forgotten what it feels like to be a kid and feel as if the world is against you#on a more positive note. I had a decadent slice of chocolate cake. it was heavenly#unfortunately I was really too in my head to fully enjoy it#literally every day for 3 weeks I've been talking about the lunch I planned to have today#I knew exactly what meal and dessert I wanted from the restaurant. it's my absolute fave and isn't available at any other local restaurant#I was totally starving by time we got to the restaurant. we were out all morning and I ate a tiny breakfast in anticipation of this meal#when we got there we found out they removed what I planned to order from the menu. I was devastated.#I know it's stupid but like this was the one part of my day that I've had planned for MONTHS and I've been thinking about it for weeks#we had a 40 minute car ride where I mentioned my excitement for the food no less than 10 times so this crushed me#also I'm just really picky in general and typically restaurants only have one or two things I'm able to eat#I offered to just eat the dessert while everyone else ordered food because they were all really hungry too but they wouldn't allow it#we left the restaurant and I still feel horrible for walking out. if I had known the item was removed we wouldn't have even gone there#it happened so recently though and I feel dumb for not even thinking to check the menu online beforehand#so we went to another restaurant and I barely ate anything and now I have no appetite for dinner and I feel bad for ruining the afternoon#even though it's my day and my celebration and I feel like I'm entitled to a slight amount of unreasonableness

Networking/Knowing A Guy: A Guide
This is the autism website. Now, as an extension of the power of love and friendship, there are few things more useful than Knowing A Guy. Knowing A Guy means you have a support network. Knowing a plumber, or a tax accountant, or just that one dude that's really fucking good at finding the information you need when you're really overwhelmed, can be the difference between being able to pay rent and having a fun party with friends to fix your shit.
How does one end up Knowing A Guy? It's a skill you can develop called Networking and it is one of the foundations of society. Unfortunately making those connections with people is fucking hard and nobody makes a tutorial for it. So, here you go:
The golden rule is you scratch my back and I scratch yours
It is necessary for survival to seek out useful people
Great news! Everyone is useful in some form or fashion - including you! When given the opportunity to learn about someone, do it! Extroversion does not come naturally to some people and that's okay. Just take whatever falls in your lap.
Types of usefulness: trade skills, connections of their own, personality you jive with, pleasant to talk to, niche interest in shared hobby, security - the list is pretty much endless. I know a guy that lives in the metro area - no job, no major hobbies, inoffensively annoying to me personally, kinda ignorant, not attractive to me, but you know what? He knows how the fuck to get around the city by foot. My rural-raised ass APPRECIATES the guide.
Remember important information: general personality, background, skillset, likes and dislikes. You can find this information by making smalltalk about their life. There is no such thing as pointless conversation. (Yes, even the annoying smalltalk)
The more people you know, the higher the likelihood that one of them will be useful in a given situation - or will know someone who is.
It is overwhelming. In a given clique/community/workspace/whatever, there is A Guy Who Knows The Other Guys. This Guy is a shortcut. Find them. They're often elderly, extroverted, a little bit annoying, a secretary or in some otherwise forward-facing position. Look for people that are gossipy/talk about other people a lot but not in negative ways. If they constantly talk shit, they'll talk shit about you too. They're still useful but be careful with the information you share
You do not have to like someone for them to be useful.
You do not have to like someone for them to be useful.*
If you have low self esteem, you're going to feel like you're using people. You're not. That's the devil talking. People like feeling valued and the connections you are making are the threads holding community together. Recognize people for their talents. It's only a problem when you're taking advantage of people
So: don't feel scummy about it. You're an animal. You have to claw out your right to survive and people will respect you more for it.
Luckily mutualism is the name of the game in the animal kingdom. Offer something back. The foundation of a Know A Guy relationship is Mutual Benefit
Sometimes that Mutual Benefit is just spreading news of the The Guy far and wide. My plumber friend is my actual friend and I love her to death, but I'm maintaining our backscratch relationship by pimping out her plumbing business to anyone that'll listen
Food is a good Mutual Benefit. People across cultures for all of human history have bonded over food. I have good success asking people for a favor and then offering to buy them lunch in return **
General compensation is also good. Offer a service in return and always do your best to offer financial compensation as appropriate. Having your plumber friend take a look at your drain: doable with a case of beer. Having your plumber friend redo the pipes in your entire house? You need to pay for that.
Being transactional is not necessarily a bad thing. I would advise against keeping an itemized list of things owed, but fish don't seek out cleaner shrimp just because they enjoy their company. Everyone gets something
Unfortunately being extroverted and generally personable is a huge benefit here, but that's the value of the Guy That Knows A Guy. There's someone out there that has consolidated All The Guys so you don't have to be the local expert. Always remember nobody can do everything and you don't need to master every skill
* This is the foundation of a functioning community. I have many acquaintances that I find incredibly annoying. They include doctors, welders, artists, social workers, lawyers, construction crew and random fuckers at the grocery store. I do not hang out with them. I do not have to in order to maintain a civil Know A Guy relationship. I can drop them useful tidbits and fuck right off so I don't have to spend any more time than necessary with them
** People may assume romantic intent. Be prepared for that. I generally denote that it's a friendly/work lunch by calling them bro at some point if they're my age. Otherwise my general demeanor is sufficient to show that I do this with everyone

AITA for telling my boyfriend’s coworkers that he’s lying about his body count?
I (35f) have been dating my boyfriend (32m) for four years. It’s honestly been the best relationship until last Friday when it all went down. I feel like I’m in the right, but now I’m wondering if I overstepped.
For context, my boyfriend has been a professional Slasher for about eight months now. He’s always really admired Cryptids, Monsters, and Nightmares so when his application was finally accepted, he was over the moon even if he was starting in a lower position than he initially applied for.
At his company, being a Slasher requires a lot of travel which we knew when he accepted the position. The end goal is for him to get a promotion to at least regional Nightmare (he wants Cryptid, but that position doesn’t have a lot of turnover) but to get that he needs to be in role for at least 12 months OR meet his goals for three months in a row. Once he promotes, we plan to relocate to his new region and “start talking about our future.”
(Side note: no this isn’t about him not popping the question yet. We are both in agreement that marriage comes after financial stability. I run a small business doing scare consults and, while it’s been growing, I wouldn’t call it stable yet. So neither of us are ready.)
I told him it’s completely normal for it to take a whole year before he’s ready to promote and he really should focus on adjusting to the company before thinking about next steps. I used to work for a competitor (I’ve been retired for five years now) and I know it can be hard to go from only taking the occasional human life to having to take over half a dozen a week. It’s not a light workload, no matter how easy it looks in the movies. One of my best friends Slashes part-time and she still only averages about five lives a week despite having done it for years. Especially these days, it can be really hard to meet quota. Humans are getting smarter, no matter what the Council wants us to think.
Anyway, boyfriend didn’t do as well as he thought he would in his first couple months. Totally understandable, of course, which I told him. I suggested he ask his boss if he could be put on a couple team assignments or even a duo until he got the hang of it. That was our first real fight. He thought I was doubting his ability to kill. He brought up how I told him it would take over a year to promote and how I said that this job wasn’t for everyone (His first assignment ended with a 0% kill rate, but that’s a different story). He said it felt like I didn’t believe in him and he said that if that was the case then maybe we shouldn’t be thinking about marriage so soon.
It got pretty messy after that. I felt like he was forgetting that I’d worked in the same field and, arguably, had a lot more experience (not to brag, but I averaged a 98% kill rate). Also, four years is NOT too soon to talk about marriage. He said I didn’t understand how he needed to focus on his career right now. I told him I thought he was taking Slasher too lightly just because it wasn’t Cryptid. He accused me of not respecting him and then things spiraled from there.
We both said a lot of things we didn’t mean and I’m embarrassed that it turned into a bit of a fang measuring contest. I ended up sleeping under the bed for a few nights until he coaxed me out to apologize.
It was a rough patch, but we talked it out. We agreed that, going forward, I wouldn’t offer advice unless he asked and he would try not to take so much of his frustration home with him. He took a weekend off and we went on a recreational haunting trip in the Montana woods.
Things did get better after that. I tried not to give him consults every time he came back from a work trip. He started bringing me souvenirs like roses and cursed puzzle boxes his work said he could have. It became easier just to hang out with each other and it felt like we were back to normal.
But then, four months ago, he came home super pissed because his boss put him on a PIP. (A performance improvement plan.) Apparently, boyfriend had not been doing better at work, he had just stopped telling me when he had a bad assignment. I saw the paperwork he got (he left it in the dungeon under the house, I didn’t go through his stuff) and he’s been missing quota by a LOT. As a junior Slasher, he was supposed to be executing at least 6 people a week, but he’d been lucky to be maiming half that.
Obviously, I had to talk to him about that. We rent our house and, even though I could have afforded the rent on my own, I didn’t want to jeopardize the investments I was making in my business (I was in the process of hiring an assistant to handle my scheduling). Plus, we agreed from day one that we would be 50/50 on rent and I would take care of the rest of the bills because I earned more. I felt that if his financial situation was in jeopardy, he needed to talk to me about it.
I tried to approach him a bit differently than last time. I asked him if there was anything I could do to help. I told him about my slasher friend and how maybe she could give him advice if he didn’t want any from me. But he said he needed to figure stuff out on his own and that if he couldn’t get himself off the PIP then he would go back to work for his dad’s janitorial company.
I let it go. I was worried but I didn’t want to fight again just after patching the holes from the last blow out. It really bugged me that he thought I didn’t believe in him so I committed to giving him the benefit of the doubt. I said okay and asked him if he needed me to meal prep for both of us that week. He offered me grocery money, but I said it was fine since I’d had to deal with a lot of humans breaking in lately and I still had some leftover in the dungeon.
Fast forward a month. Boyfriend got off the PIP super fast. He worked his way off of it over Spring Break and started taking on a lot of extra assignments. In just four weeks he went to Miami Beach twice, New York City twice, and to three separate summer camps. I missed him and it was hard not having him around but I remembered how he said he needed to focus on his career and I tried not to nag.
It was hard not to nag though. With him gone, all the housework fell on me. We rent a 19th century manor, and its upkeep really does need two people. Doing all the chores plus running my business started to really drain me. Even when he was home, he forgot to banish the ghosts (my chore is to kill all invading humans, and his chore is to banish their ghosts) and he never took out the trash. I think he cleaned blood off the dungeon walls once, but then I had to basically redo it because he missed a lot of spots.
But still, I didn’t say anything because he was doing really well at work and I didn’t want to ruin that for him. Even when Humans started breaking in every week, I didn’t complain even though it interrupted my work day.
Last month though, I did ask him if we could move somewhere that needed less maintenance. There were just way too many Humans breaking in and I didn’t have the time to deal with them anymore. Even if I don’t do all the theatrics I used to as a Cryptid, killing humans through fear still takes a lot of time. He asked me if I didn’t appreciate the free meat, and I said I would appreciate it more if I wasn’t the only butchering it.
He said he didn’t want to move because he was really close to getting promoted to regional Nightmare and he didn’t want to take time off work to move. I was so surprised that I couldn’t hide how surprised I was. He saw and got offended. He asked if I still didn’t believe in him. I said that I did, but it was a huge jump to go from an 8% kill rate to getting promoted.
He got even more mad at me for bringing up his stats and he said that he had nearly 80% kill rate since being put on the PIP. I asked how many humans a week he was slashing and he told me I was being too nosy and that was proof that I didn’t believe in him.
I asked him if we could at least hire a ghoul then to keep the humans out of my office and he said he didn’t want to waste the money that we should be saving for our new house. I asked him what he wanted me to do then? I had to take phone calls for my consulting business and it was really hard to stalk humans all around the house while trying to sound like a professional to my clients.
He asked me to be patient for one more month. He said if he met quota for one more month, his boss said he’d get promoted. So I said fine and let it go.
Fast forward to now, almost a full month later.
Last Friday, I attended the Eldritch Conference. For those not in the scare field, the Eldritch Conference is the most prestigious event in our industry. It’s invitation only and is a chance to network with all the big players in the field. Mothman, the Jersey Devil, Bloody Mary and Bigfoot all spoke this year and both my former company, Grudge Industries, and my boyfriend’s current company, Forgotten Summer Solutions, were invited.
I was surprised to get an invite as a solo contributor to the field. However, my consulting firm has really been doing well and I did land a seasonal contract with the Yeti Co-op which I guess is how they heard about me. Plus, I’ve been a speaker before so I think the organizers knew I would behave myself.
I was planning on telling my boyfriend that I was going, but he was out of town on a co-ed sleepover assignment. He usually doesn’t have his phone on during his assignments, so I didn’t bother calling him. I just figured it’d be nice if we ran into each other at the conference if he made it back in time.
Which brings me to what actually happened (apologies for the long post).
So everything went great for my part of the day. I got to network with a lot of individual businesses and even got to reconnect with Blood Mary who I knew back in my Cryptid days. I told her I was dating a Slasher from Forgotten Summer Solutions and invited her to come with me to check out their booth. I thought it would be fun to grab dinner with her after since I assumed if my boyfriend was there, he’d be going out with coworkers which he often does. Plus, I admit, I was showing off a little. I don’t often get the chance to brag about my Cryptid days.
She agreed and we went over to see if my boyfriend was there.
I introduced myself to the people manning the booth. My boyfriend wasn’t there, but a few Slashers recognized my name and greeted me. They were definitely in awe of Bloody Mary (she came in full uniform) and invited us to look at their displays. They had portfolios for each Slasher on the desk as a sort of preview of what their services looked like.
While Bloody Mary looked through the portfolios, I chatted with my boyfriend’s coworkers. They said they were thrilled to work with him and that, even though he had a really rough start, it was impressive how quickly he started meeting his goals. Something about how they talked about his work kind of didn’t make sense. They were talking like he was killing a dozen humans a week, but he’d told me that he was at 80% on his assignments which typically only offer about ten humans each.
I asked them about it and they said that he’d been Slashing during After Hours which is a new goal supplement program his company launched a few months ago. Basically, anyone can sign up for After Hours and the company counts human kills done in uniform as part of their quota. I asked them if this was available to them while they were on assignment and they said no, it had to be done when they had down time. I asked them how my boyfriend was part of that when he was traveling all the time and they looked confused. One of them said that my boyfriend is still getting one assignment per week and is then supplementing his kill rate with After Hours.
At that point, I was even more confused. It sounded like my boyfriend had been lying to me then, because he told me that he was getting at least two assignments a week. If he was only getting one, then where was he going when he said he was traveling?
Bloody Mary interrupted before I could say anything and asked how their Slashers did their kills. They said that every Slasher at their company is required to use a standard issue weapon (like a machete or axe) for their kills to count. They said their company doesn’t count accidents as part of their quota (like falling or heart attacks).
Bloody Mary pulled me aside and showed me the portfolio she was holding. She said that she was going to give me a chance to explain without them overhearing and showed me the book. She said that a bunch of kills in it looked Cryptid kills. And she said, specifically, it looked like the kills I made when I was a Cryptid. I took the book from her and flipped through it and she was right, they really did look like Cryptid kills. Worse, I recognized a few of the Humans from the past few weeks. They were actually my kills!
Kill stealing is a major taboo in our industry.
I told her I didn’t know anything about this. She looked really relieved at that and said that even though I wasn’t a Cryptid anymore, it would look really bad for me if I was caught helping a Slasher cheat at their job. It could affect my business which she’d only heard good things about.
I’m embarrassed to say that I tried to defend him. He’s new to our industry so I thought it might be a mistake. He might not be trying to cheat, this could be a misunderstanding.
She said she didn’t think so because a mistake would be one or two of my kills mixed in with his, not the entire book.
I counted up how many photos were in the book and, all told, of the 146 kills, at least 100 were mine. I couldn’t really say it was a mistake at that point and I was just staring at his portfolio like an idiot. Bloody Mary asked me what I was going to do because, mistake or not, this looked really bad and could damage my reputation if it got out.
At that moment, another man walked up to booth and asked us if there was a problem. I knew that if I said anything, I would be jeopardizing my boyfriend’s job, but if I didn’t say something, I was jeopardizing my business.
I told my boyfriend’s coworkers that he was lying about his body count. I said I didn’t think that they knew he was doing it, but over half of the kills in his portfolio weren’t his and I suggested they remove it from their display before another Cryptid came by and realized it.
The other man thanked me for bringing this to his attention and asked how we knew. Bloody Mary said that she knew another Cryptid’s kills and I had to tell them that I was that Cryptid, though I was retired now. He asked me if I knew my boyfriend was doing this, and I told him no.
I told him I really didn’t want to get my boyfriend in trouble and suggested that maybe he didn’t know those kills didn’t belong to him because they happened in our house. I was grasping at straws and Blood Mary even looked sad for me. His coworkers looked skeptical but tentatively agreed. The man – who turned out to my boyfriend’s boss – said that they would investigate this thoroughly and apologized personally for his employee’s misconduct.
I was spiraling at that point so I thanked him and said I wasn’t mad, I was just looking out for both of our reputations. He promised to keep it between us and I agreed.
Then I apologized to Bloody Mary because I didn’t feel like eating dinner anymore. She said she understood and wished me well.
I went home and did a quick perimeter search of the property. Sure enough, there were human summoning stones ALL OVER the yard. Which means my boyfriend was intentionally luring humans to our house to get me to kill them so he could take credit. It wasn’t a mistake at all.
My boyfriend came home later that night in his work clothes. As soon he got inside he started yelling. He said he was suspended without pay and that all his hard work was for nothing.
I said I knew he’d been stealing my kills and he almost ruined my reputation. He said they still counted as his kills because he did all the work of luring the humans to our house.
I told him that wasn’t how it worked and he knew it. He said it was the same as setting a trap and I was taking this too seriously. I told him that, as a Slasher, he has to use a weapon to get his kills, not me. He said I was basically the same thing since I had such a high kill rate. I asked him if he was calling me an object.
(My parents exploited me by selling me as a haunted doll through a lot of my childhood and he knows I’m sensitive to being called an object.)
He backpedaled at that point and asked if I didn’t want to buy a house together. He said he was doing it for us and I should’ve understood and not said anything. I told him that when I was a Cryptid I had my pride and would’ve never done this.
He said I needed to tell his boss that he was the one who made all those kills. I said it wasn’t me who recognized them as Cryptid kills and now his boss knew too. He accused me of thinking I’m better than him because I have telekinetic powers and can move through shadows and can possess people, while he’s basically a human himself. I told him of course not and that I worked hard for those powers unlike him.
He got really mad at that and actually charged at me with his machete raised. I don’t think he was going to actually hit me, but I reacted like he was. It was all instinct. I disarmed him and I swear I heard a crack when I grabbed his wrist. I shoved him into the wall.
He crumpled to the floor and started crying. He said sorry and sort of curled up around his wrist. He said he didn’t ever feel like he was enough for me and he didn’t even know why I was still with him. He called himself a bunch of names and said I would be better off without him.
I sort of awkwardly stood there for a minute. On one hand I wanted to assure him that he was enough and that I loved him, but, on the other, I wasn’t sure I could forgive him. He nearly ruined my reputation, and he embarrassed me in front of Bloody Mary. Plus, I still didn't know where he’d been going all those times he said he was on a business trip and apparently wasn’t.
So I ended up not saying anything. I went to our room and started packing a bag. He followed me. He was still crying as he begged me not to go. He said he would own up to his kill steals at work and he would make it right. He pleaded for me not to leave him and that he would give up slashing.
I told him I needed space to think. He tried to grab me, but I shadow walked out of the house. I heard him screaming from outside and I hurriedly drove away.
Now I’m at my friend’s house and I told her everything. She agreed I did the right thing walking away from him, but when I asked her what I should do she hesitated. She said that my boyfriend wasn’t right to kill steal but, as a fellow Slasher, she understood what he was going through. She said I wouldn’t understand the pressure to meet quota because I was always surpassing mine when I was in the field. She said that a Cryptid could never understand a Slasher.
She also said that nobody would have found out about his kills if I hadn’t brought them to his boss’ attention. She said the only time kills are on display like that is at the Eldritch Conference and by the next one, he’d have had kills of his own. She thinks that if I’d just confronted him at home, he wouldn’t be on suspension.
So now I’m worried that I overreacted when I told my boyfriend’s coworkers that he was lying about his body count.

After suffering a gunshot wound, you wake up in a hospital bed with Ghost sitting by your side. Unfortunately, the effects of anaesthesia leave you unable to recognise him and, worse, confuse him with someone else.
A/N: Fluff. Based on a request I received a while ago. Hope you like it, anon!
———————————————————————
A machine on your left beeps rhythmically. The taste of something metallic lingers in your mouth, and the iodine smell stinks your nostrils. Your eyes open slowly, but the bright ceiling light forces them shut again. You lick your lips and attempt to swallow a couple of times. Dry. Your mouth is dry. You need water. Your hand moves towards your face, but a low, raspy voice advises you against it.
“Careful now,” it says, and a hand gently grabs your wrist. “Don’t pull the IV off.”
You turn your head towards the figure beside you and squint. It’s a man, but your blurry vision doesn’t help you identify him. Your eyes travel to your wrist and focus on the closest part of him: a skeleton’s hand.
You try to shake your hand off his grip, but it turns out futile. Frustrated, you give up and raise your middle finger at him.
“Not my time yet,” you declare. “Fuck off.”
“Pardon?” he asks.
“Not ready to go yet,” you reply, tucking your middle finger in your palm and lifting it back up again. “And also, fuck off.”
The man releases your wrist, placing your hand gently beside you. He clears his throat and leans forward. Though your vision remains blurry, you spot what looks like a human skull with a hood over it.
“How are you feeling, love?” he asks, his tone softer.
“How am I feeling, love?” you repeat. “Did Hell improve their customer service?”
“I’m not-” The man begins but pauses. He sighs, shakes his head and rests his elbows on his thighs. “Never mind.”
“Where am I?” You ask.
“Hospital.” He replies. “You took a bullet.”
Directing your attention to your body, you feel a dull throb in your chest. You wince as your fingers brush against the bandages.
“You are joking.” You reply and slap your hand on the bed. “Why? How?”
“Well,” He says and tilts his head to the side. “You exchanged a few shots with the enemy, your gun ran out of bullets, his didn’t, and here we are.”
“My gun?” You ask, shocked. “I have a gun?”
“Several.” He nods.
“SEVERAL?” You shout. “Why would I possibly need several guns?”
“It’s your job, love.” He replies.
“My job is to have several guns?” you ask. “And shooting at people?”
“I wouldn’t put it that way,” he explains, “but it’s mainly for defence.”
“Well,” you shrug and wince at the pain. “Doesn’t look like I’m that good at defence—especially for having several guns.”
“I was really worr—”
“Water,” you interrupt and gesture at your mouth. “I need water.”
“Doctor said it’s not the time for water yet,” he replies.
“Why?” you ask, pretending to check a non-existent wristwatch. “What time is it?”
“No, love,” he replies and muffles a chuckle. “Doctor said you need to wait until you have some water.”
“You throw the ‘love’ thing a little too freely,” you mumble, licking your lips and lifting your index finger. “I’d be really careful if I were you.”
“Really?” he asks, leaning back into the chair and crossing his arms in front of his chest. “Why?”
“I,” you say and point at yourself, “got a boyfriend, thank you very much.”
“Oh,” he exclaims and tilts his head. “Is that so.”
“Yup,” you nod. “And he can kill you.”
“Can he?”
“Can?” You say, and a smug smile forms on your dry lips. “He will absolutely, one hundred and a thousand per cent kill you.”
“Is he that good?” He asks.
“I mean,” you shrug, motioning at the bandages on your chest. “He’s much better than I am.”
“Oh wow,” he exclaims and leans forward. “Is he as good of a boyfriend as he is a shooter?”
“Far from it,” you reply, letting your hand fall to your side.
The man doesn’t speak. He doesn’t seem that comfortable all of a sudden. He shuffles in his chair, trying to find a better position, and when he does, he clasps his hands together.
“Go on,” he finally says. “Spill it.”
“Ok, so,” you begin, “first things first, he doesn’t listen to me when I want to vent, and whenever he does, all he says is nonsense.”
“The lad gives you solutions,” he snaps, “and you call them nonsense?”
“I don’t want solutions, man,” you reply, shaking your head. “I want him to just listen to me.”
“Even if the solutions he provides are literally the answers to your suffering?”
“Even then.” You confirm.
“Gotcha,” he nods. “What else?”
“Oof,” you sigh, “how much time do you have?”
“I’m immortal,” he reminds you, “plus the next reaping is in five hours.”
“Oh boy,” you reply. “Business not going that well lately, huh?”
“Not many deaths to take care of,” he spits. “I guess some people could use some serious training when it comes to their aim.”
“Speaking of training,” you say, “he’s always at work and never spends much time with me.”
“The guy’s trying to spend as much time with you as he can, for fucks sake!” he shouts, throwing his hands up. “He even lied to get you on his team!”
“How do you know he put me on his team?” You ask.
“I keep a close eye on him.” He replies.
“What did he lie about?”
“Your precision in aiming,” he jokes and motions for you to continue. “Next one.”
“I can’t think of anything else,” you reply. “Other than he doesn’t say how much he loves me.”
“You’re having a laugh now, aren’t you?” He says, and his tone feels almost threatening. “He’s showing it to you daily; offering advice, keeping you close to him, even risking the possibility of being accused of nepotism for crying out loud! He doesn’t need to say it as well for you to know it!”
“It’s just nice to hear it sometimes,” you sigh and twist a thread from the bed sheet. You turn your head slightly toward him, and he lowers his head to the ground.
“How about you?” You ask. “You have a girlfriend?”
“I do,” he confirms.
“Shut up!” You shout, widening your eyes and immediately closing them back again. “Where did you guys meet?”
“Hell,” he replies. “Right in the pits of it.”
“How is she?” You ask.
“Perfect.” He states.
“Bullshit,” you murmur. “No one’s perfect.”
“She is to me.” He says, shrugging.
“Do you love her?” You ask.
“Absolutely,” he replies, nodding slowly. “One hundred and a thousand per cent I do.”
