[image description: 8 photos of a letterpress broadside printed from handset type and a linoleum block illustration. the poem is titled The Interview, written by a young poet for the 2024 edition of Words of Courage. the poet answers questions like what musical instrument, or animal, or color would you like to be. they would be an Afuche Cabasa, a tarantula, and the sound of a bird being eaten by a tarantula. printed from lead type, handset in Motto and Neuland; illustrated in pink, red, and blue is a tarantula playing the Afuche Cabasa. there are motion lines embossed out of the sheet for the shaking effect of the percussion. full text under the cut. end description.]
behold my abominable contribution to this year's Words of Courage publication 🎉🎉
WoC is a yearly publication of poetry broadsides written by patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and designed, printed, and bound into portfolios by local letterpress & book artists. this year’s whole edition will be scanned and posted there in a couple weeks & previous years are always there to see!
knew that i wanted this one immediately; this kid is SO cool and funny. personally i am deeply arachnophobic and have been doing some spider illustrations as exposure therapy. so far no discernible effect!! still very afraid of em. don't like to see em. research phase is a horror. but i am getting better at drawing them.
the Neuland for the sound effect was a no-brainer to me, plus i knew i would be varying the size and we have the original hand-cut stuff so each size of the face has little differences in the letter forms that you can spot. that little change in angle on the Cs, i love it so so much.
i didn't want to make the spider a cartoon. this reach for the skies pose is a real thing tarantulas do as a defensive back-off posture, so i was aiming for more of a posterized-from-photograph feel on the linocuts. reduction cut for the pink and red passes, separate block for the blue. the little bit of wobbly registration between the red and blue blocks helps the posterization feel, and some people also said it reminded them of riso, which i thought was very neat.
thought about printing the motion lines from rule as well, but it's a lot of text and i wanted it to stay very readable. so i made an embossing jig out of masking tape and hand-scored each of the lines into the edition instead. easy! well. simple anyway. 100 of em does strain the wrist so i only did a few at a time over a couple days. i finished a little ahead of schedule and this felt less…stressfully complicated than some other projects I've done so I kept looking at it and worrying that it wasn't actually finished?? when i'm not looking at it i still worry about that. but i'm, hmm, when i see it i'm really pretty sure i was correct to stop here.
The Interview    Q:        Rio, if you could be an animal, what animal would you like to be? A:        I’d be a tarantula. They make beautiful webs. Some tarantulas eat birds!   Q:        If you could be a color, what color appeals to you?
A:        I’d be red velvet like the red velvet cupcakes at Cupcake Royale. I’d also be aqua blue, the color of hospital masks.   Q:        What loud noise would you like to be if you could be one? A:        Definitely the sound of a bird screeching while being eaten by a tarantula.   Q:        Suppose you could be a musical instrument? A:        I’d love that! And I’d love to be a Latin Afuche Cabasa. It’s a stick with tiny metal spheres around it. When you rotate it in your hand it makes the sound Chichichichichichichichi.   Q:        Rio, can you imagine having wheels?  A:        I can! I’d be a buggy. I ride the hospital buggies every day when I’m here. They make me feel happy and fast! And wanting to go! Go!

Plant-Based Inks & The BigOne Art Marker
Last month, I met with Laurie from Bluebird Gardens to test plant-based dyes that could be used on fabric AND paper using Neuland’s BigOne Art markers.
Success! Yes, they wrote beautifully on both.
Tumblr media
Do you know how long we have to wait for these plants to grow, get harvested, turn into dye, in order to be used? Sometimes just under a year, with some plants, it could take several years. And think of all the love and labor that goes into their nurturing and care.
While I am learning to be in the moment… It’s quite easy AND necessary when lettering. These plants are teaching me patience. And we all know the value of being patient. :)
Here are a few photos from a workshop in Laurie’s garden last summer.
Tumblr media
Laurie offers workshops both at her farm near Mesa Verde and at Durango Sustainable Goods. So if you are near or visiting Southwest Colorado, please check out her offerings at https://www.bluebirddyegardens.com.

How the stars aligning inform how I design my offerings
Like most artists, I flutter from idea to idea.
But when it comes to offering classes at Let’s Letter Together! I have a very different approach. I have been planning, setting intentions, harvesting, and sharing the abundance on an annual cyclical basis.
By Winter Solstice of each year, I plant my seeds of intention for the coming year. I let the fertile ground of my intentions help my ideas grow.
By Summer Solstice, my ideas are fully formed and ready to share.
This year I delivered: • Lettering with Pencils • Finding Your Signature Style
Then the real fun begins: Lammas/Harvest allows me to see and share with abundance. This year delivered a bumper crop. As I was planning to announce:
Tumblr media
Dancing in the Dark with Sharon Zeugin
When The BigOne! Blowout happened:
BigOne Duet with Brandy Agerbeck
Let’s go BIG Together! (a free class on Neuland markers)
BIG Fun! with the BigOne! With Mike Gold
Tumblr media
Not to eclipse my efforts with Sharon, these BigOne sessions have come together quite easily—inspired by a retrograding Venus transiting over my natal sun in Leo and the Venus Cazimi. While Dancing in the Dark has been in slow development for over a year—with good purpose.
Starting on the Fall Equinox when the light and dark are equal, we will begin Dancing with the Dark with Roman Capitals on black paper. Together we will dance with Sharon through a series of prompts and end our time together at Samhain, at a time when the veil is the thinnest, and we will be equipped to let go of what no longer serves us in order to step into the selves we need to become next.
From Sharon… "Let's use this time to emphasize connecting the lettering with personal feeling and one’s own words—a meaningful mantra or something fun to write. This is an opportunity for experimenting with improvisation in terms of writing words and designing as you go.   We’ll start simply and grow from there, always rooted in the knowledge and experience of the forms—and variations on their rhythm, spacing, and proportions."
Tumblr media
This launching of ideas and completing them by November 1 aligns perfectly with the Deer Walks I am doing with Cassandra Leoncini (http://www.twoeaglesastrology.com). This is the restart after a 7-year cycle since my first Deer Walks when I lived in DC and needed an integrated Vision Quest in order to leave so I may return to the Southwest.
And it’s after that time that I take all of the ideas I have gathered during this harvest season for 2024 and let them reveal their true selves.
Will I be collaborating more with master calligraphers to give our shared audiences what they need, want, and desire?
Will I both: return to the basics by offering more handwriting classes all WHILE helping visual practitioners Level Up so the important work they are doing is supported?
Will there be another European Lettering Tour? Since 2018 I have taught hundreds of VPs in over 10 different countries in-person. With so many more entering the field, do they need me in-person or will virtual learning continue to grow?
I read a quote on Instagram the other day that said:
“Set goals so high that they demand an entirely different version of you.”
I know where I want to put my focus in 2024:
Appreciative Inquiry,
Lettering,
Tech hosting and building curriculums to support trauma-informed communities
But will the stars align?
Only time will tell. As will my health and well-being in support of these efforts. Both my willingness to grow and the external forces outside of my control will determine what version of me will come next.
What future self are you currently developing?

Typeface selection
Part of my research was to look into a typeface selection for my animation when the time came to create it. I looked into various different sources and opinions about what typeface could work and considered the context of the speech, furthermore who it was said by.
An article on the website 99designs by Lindsay Kramer "a copy and content writer" cites the following:
"Fonts are one of the most important design choices to make when developing your brand identity. The best fonts leave you feeling like you’ve made an instant friend while the worst fonts are like a stranger who won’t leave you alone."
Therefore it was critical I get my typeface selection correct if I wanted to send the right message through my animation.
Kramer lists the following points about what makes a good typeface:
Even kerning Consistency Balance Legibility
Then lists the following points about what makes a bad typeface:
Overused Imbalanced Unreadable Boring "Fauxotic" fonts
When choosing a typeface I should consider that the typeface is
"Well-crafted and aesthetically pleasing (and) appropriate for your brand".
Kramer lists the following as good typefaces:
Didot Bodoni Garamond Futura Helvetica Mrs Eaves Baskerville Akzidenz-Grotesk Clarendon Gill Sans Verdana Frutiger FF Din Proxima Nova Uni Sans
And then the following for bad typefaces:
Copperplate Gothic Times New Roman Trajan Pro Comic Sans Courier Papyrus Bonzai Neuland-Inline Brush Script Souvenir FF Blur Impact Trajan Pro Curlz Jokerman Lobster Bleeding Cowboys Arial
While all incredibly subjective dependant on the clients needs I feel that this list is incredibly consistent with what I believe. Therefore out of the selection of "good" typefaces, I decided to choose Helvetica. It is incredibly well known and the only draw back from Kramer's list is that it's "overused". However, I thought that since I was working with kinetic type I might be able to use it and get away with it since I will be playing with different ways to present it visually. Not to mention that the wide array of weights that the font family offers allows me to choose weights when I animate to illustrate points better.
I then looked into other sources for a second opinion on what the "best" typefaces are and was met with the same answer on BonFX, a table created by Douglas Bonneville in 2015 lists Helvetica as the number 1 best typeface to use.
With that I then moved into whether Helvetica could be appropriate in a professional setting (to reflect the professionalism of Helen Clark throughout the speech) and found a resource on Studio Kayama by "ikumikayama" under the article "5 fonts that add credibility and professionalism to scientific research". Helvetica is listed at number 2 on their list. With Kayama citing "Helvetica is a font that looks great on both print and on screen.  Nature , Science, and Cell request that their figure labels be in Helvetica". Therefore Helvetica is appropriate for a formal/professional setting such as this topic, and furthermore reflecting the professionalism of Helen Clark throughout the speech.
Finally I looked at a resource dedicated to praising Helvetica (despite a potentially bias view). An article on Indusnet by Mainak Biswas titled "Helvetica Lovers Unite: Probably the Most Prolific Font in the World". Biswas states that Helvetica "is legible even when the viewer is in motion, making it popular amongst signage and airline logos" therefore switching it so that the type is in motion would most certainly be viable. Biswas also states that Helvetica is "omnipresent, a lot of big brand have their logos in the Helvetica font. Even though it was widely used, the message it sends across and its professionalism is unmatched".
This concludes my research, justification and selection of a typeface for my animation. Helvetica is suitable for a professional setting and therefore represents Helen Clark in just as a professional setting. Is incredibly popular and safe to use and has a wide range of weights to be able to utilise during my animation.

Stargate Atlantis & Voltron: Legendary Defender are the same if you just squint hard enough
You know
A group of people find ancient alien technologie, travel through a wormhole into another galaxy, find a giant castle/city-ship and get sucked into a war against an evil alien race that has been reigning for 10.000 years.
Coincidence ??
Probably
But still interesting.

The way the German government keeps trying to invade our (internet) privacy is the epitome of Neuland.
First, there's this completely insane proposal where they want to make it mandatory for porn sites to check your ID to confirm whether you are of age and allowed to watch porn. Surely I don't want some random ass porn website to have my ID? lol (This is regardless of whether porn is a good or bad thing. This is not the point.)
Secondly, they literally passed a law about government spy ware that can be installed on literally any device without suspicion to check if you have child porn or whatever. I don't want the government tracking my every move just because???
And then they also want to somehow make a law that makes it mandatory for any device with a possible internet connection to be fitted with a mandatory content filter (that filters everything out not suitable for children) unless you can prove you are 18+.
?????????????????????
Like, 10 years ago everyone was going NUTS about NSA over here and now they literally do the same shit, and this is in a country that has a long history of spying on their people during the GDR as well as the Third Reich to some extent.

I'm the kind of person who will open every post I want to reblog in a new tab. Same with Videos I want to watch on YT. And after scrolling I sometimes just don't have the spoons to actually reblog or watch, meaning they accumulate. Sometimes for weeks. Got some time and spoons today, and well.... I'm 130 tabs down so far and I have so, so many more to go. Wish me luck and I hope you don't mind me spamming weeks old posts lol. And while we're at it: have a nice day if you actually bothered to read this post. Also if you didn't, in which case you also won't read this but I don't care, this is the internet and it's Neuland for all of us.

[Album + Video] IDLES kündigen neues Album “CRAWLER“ an!
Tumblr media
“There's so many bands that go through the small rooms and dream of making it into the big rooms”, erzählen die Fünf. “Being able to write a soul tune like this made me go, fuck -- we’re at a place where we're actually allowed to go to these big rooms and be creative and not just go through the motions and really appreciate what we’ve got. The song is sort of an allegory of feeling lost and getting through it.”
