Do any of your caharacters have any fears that they have faced, or have they gotten worse from trying to confront those fears
Ooh, great question! Thank you for asking :)
Florian is terrified of talking about his feelings and doesn't really get much better at it in his book, Curls of Smoke... BUT is going to learn to do it in his sequel!
Katharina from the Violins and Violets series is scared of being herself, or letting anyone get close enough to her to find out who she really is - quite literally, because she's in disguise - BUT ends up having to face this fear when her identity gets uncovered.
Gordon from This Still Happens is scared that the person who tried to kill him will try again, or target his friends, and... Yep, he has to face that one as well. He's also very scared to let his guard down even when his attacker isn't around, but learns to do it and start trusting the people he loves again.

I could think of no better way to share the news than this!
So when I was 17, my cat went missing and I'd given up hope of ever seeing him again.
Until on Monday, 27th of May, 2024, my friend sent me a FB post asking 'isn't that your mother?' about the person named on the microchip.
Tumblr media
Here he is! 16 years old, and found safe, twelve whole years after he went missing!
Yesterday (Tuesday the 28th of May, 2024) I went to the rescue that had him, and I reclaimed my boy, renaming him Artie! (He'd originally been called 'Cat' because my mother and I couldn't decide on a name)
He's home safe with me now, currently inhabiting my bathroom and purring up a storm every time someone goes in there!
I'll be doing slow introductions between him and my current cat to give them the best possible chance of living in harmony!
Here's some pictures of Artie once we let him out of the carrier:

Ah...
growing up being autistic but not knowing is just *hiding in room while people are over* *getting tired and needing to recharge after the smallest chores* *getting called a gifted kid* *knowing that you’re “weird” because people are making fun of you but not knowing how to stop being weird* *having adults tell you how “mature” you are* *getting in trouble for not doing work* *convincing yourself that you’re just lazy and stupid because you can’t make yourself do work* *getting really invested in “weird” media*

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)
At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.
Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.

also worth noting that "abusive" doesn't actually mean "irredeemable" either.
there's a lot of people that have done things in the past that were bad, because they weren't taught any better, or they were in an overall toxic situation where EVERYONE was shitty (like a cult), or they were just at an especially low point and hurt others for it.
you don't have to forgive them. you don't have to ever speak to them again. you can be angry with them until you die if you want.
but society cannot function if we don't allow them to move on. to change their behavior and fuck off somewhere else and build meaningful relationships without bothering you again. we need a path for people to change, or nothing ever will.

There's a big heavy drinking scene where Gordon is steaming drunk at the beginning of This Still Happens, and it's basically just there for fun. Because it's British teenagers having an unsupervised party, and that's kind of what we do when we're left to our own devices and there's alcohol around...
Bit naughty. But generally not dangerous, as long as you don't have too much. In this country especially, it's quite normal to drink a bit from about 14 or 15. Most parents feel it's better to have a relaxed attitude around alcohol, so that teenagers don't try to be secretive or ashamed of drinking, because that's when they do it dangerously.
(If people are going to emulate any behaviour from that scene, I'd definitely rather it's "get a bit silly on too much alcohol" than "drink untreated water out of a river", especially if they're doing it in 2023. The quality of wild water is a lot worse in 2023 than it was in 2014, thanks to massive deregulation of water companies. Might write a sequel where they all get Lyme disease from drinking the water from the spring...)
This tweet is just... Odd. Very odd.

Hello, friends!
I've just remembered a dream I had last night, in which I got an email from someone who'd made an unofficial web series adaptation of This Still Happens! I watched the first episode, and it was... REALLY GOOD! It was set in the USA, not the UK, but other than that the concept and plot and character dynamics were the same - definitely an adaptation - and, ooh, I just... Really want to write more for that universe, no! I'm already working on the sequel (crossover with Curls of Smoke), but... Hehehe, I love when things inspire me like this.

I love the idea that Bill’s manipulation tactics are horribly obvious but Ford is so socially inept that it works on him perfectly

every time a new SA allegation of a favored celeb arises, i'm reminded of the absolutely soul-crushing experience of the depp/heard trial in which i learned that dozens of ppl i loved + respected + trusted were also willing to engage in the basest form of misogyny if the woman Seemed Crazy Enough. there was a horrifying 2ish weeks on this website + much longer irl where i genuinely felt unsafe voicing my discomfort as i relived something eerily reminiscent of the aftermath of my own assaults playing out on screen, commented on by true crime youtubers like it was a red sox game.
it happens time + time again with every new allegation + it's truly the most agonizing + exhausting part of being a survivor. i am begging you all to consider that survivors are watching you engage with this stuff like theater + it erodes our trust in all of you + compounds our grief.

I wrote about 10,000 words in one day during sixth form - once - and have never managed to top that! But I've written 5,000+ on a couple of occasions, mostly when rushing to get This Still Happens done.
Poll time! Just for fun, what's the most number of words you've written in a single day? Smashing the keyboard with your forehead doesn't count.
Please reblog to get more answers!
