Earlier this year I went to the Winnipeg Art Gallery for the first time, and I felt the most feelings around this piece. My photo doesn't convey everything; these figures are about as tall as an adult human, and ambient air currents in the building make them all gently turn back and forth with each other. It was quiet around us and the effect was calming and beautiful.
The nearby description said
The ancestors are dancing in aapaskaiyaawa. Within an Indigenous worldview, we believe that our ancestors watch over us and that time is fluid. What does it mean for Indigenous people that time is in flux? In some ways, it means that past, present, and future are intertwined. Our ancestors are not just in the past, they are here now, and they are in our future.
(...) Dancing for many Indigenous cultures signals an honouring or a celebration. There is a sacredness to those occasions when we pay respect to our kin and identify that we, too, are an important part of the cycle. One day we will pass through and enter the dance, watching our kin in time.
