Shuichi Harem: Saihara Detective Agency, 2/5

Previous post. I'll do my best to link these together for those who want to see them all. We've got a lot to get through~

Also? Because I'm linking the posts, I'll be doing a lot less review of the general history of the encompassing AU. I wound up repeating myself a lot in the Fate harem posts a while back, and I'm going to cut back on that problem as much as possible. (人◕ω◕) I will reference non-canon events sometimes, and it'll be up to you readers to either roll with it or go back and read the previous post. I've connected V3 with the rest of the Hope's Peak saga and revolutionized the "fiction" bits to fit a more grounded narrative that doesn't seek to toss everything (everything) in Danganronpa out with the bathwater. This is my choice, so happy reading. All haters that don't have legit criticisms will be muted. (人◕ω◕)

The Beginning

Maki Harukawa... Here's what you need to know. In this AU, her past is near identical to canon. She had a friend at the orphanage she wanted to protect, so Maki joined a cult - or rather, their mercenary corps - to keep them from recruiting her friend who seemed to have a lot more innate potential for the craft. Maki still did a ton of work as an assassin as a child, and her friend still died while she was away from the orphanage. Consequentially, Maki closed herself off from others and committed to assassin work full-time to numb the pain of her loss.

Eventually, she made a big enough blip on Hope's Peak's radar. More specifically, the Steering Committee caught wind of her ruthlessness and efficiency, and felt it was worth studying her and offered her shelter from the cult that controlled her life. Maki wasn't an idiot, she knew that she was exchanging a much smaller fish for a freaking killer whale when it came to the cult vs the Steering Committee of Hope's Peak, yet she was still sore about her friend's death and the pointlessness of going along with the cult...

So Maki jumped ship and let the Steering Committee bury the cult with their nigh well unlimited resources. She wasn't fool enough to think they were on her side, to assume that they didn't have means of reining her in or erasing her should she step out of line. But she did have a lot more freedom than before, and they funneled a ton of new, more high profile work her way. For her, it was just the next stage of evolution of her screwed up life. She never had true choices, demented adults dictated what she was to do and Maki carried out her duties whether she liked it or not.

Her cover story, if Kizakura or the Headmaster or anyone was truly pushy about knowing what she did for a living, Maki (as well as her public file) was to tell them she was the Ultimate Child Caregiver, and not the Ultimate Assassin. Her talent worked along similar lines as the Ultimate Imposter in that she wasn't supposed to advertise what she was; if she was truly the best assassin, Maki could get by with a lame-ass cover story that probably no one believed. (人◕ω◕) Maki just channeled her experiences from the orphanage to come up with stories of her 'raising kids', and that seemed to satisfy most people that asked.

Although to be fair, she never spent much time at Hope's Peak, as Class 79 was only there a few precious months before the Tragedy unfolded and they were whisked away by a separate Mastermind. While at Hope's Peak, Maki kept to herself and stonewalled her classmates. Work was more preferable, even if all the constant killing numbed her to the bone and gave her plenty of nightmares. (人◕ω◕)

This isn't to say Maki never associated with her classmates. She just didn't truly bond with them. Not in these few months. The ones she talked to the most were the nosy Kaede and Kaito... and she kept an eye on their resident luckster, who appeared to have a history of working in a private detective's firm. His Uncle's. Though Shuichi seemed to swear off detective work... up until that pianist ninny dragged one of their senpai over, and eventually got Shuichi to tagalong as a poor excuse of a sidekick. (人◕ω◕) Yeah, Maki didn't have a high opinion of Shuichi with how wishy-washy he was. And Shuichi didn't know what to make of Maki, with how closed off she was.

Their beginnings were not rosy. But it's just the hand they were dealt~ Maki is an assassin. Shuichi a wannabe detective. They were destined to be at odds, at least at first. (人◕ω◕)

... Oh, and just so we're perfectly clear? Yes, Kokichi approached Maki Roll during these first few months. He was the worst to deal with because it's like he figured out her 'game' from Day 1. (人◕ω◕) And despite knowing what she did, Kokichi just kept pushing her buttons. The fact the gremlin gravitated to Shuichi as a "bestie" only made Maki avoid Shuichi more, back at Hope's Peak. She came close to pounding the grape gremlin more than a few times... But she always held herself back because one of the Steering Committee's rules was to not touch fellow Ultimate students; they needed them in mint condition for research purposes. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)

The Hazy Middle

Suffice to say, when it rains, it pours. (人◕ω◕) Class 79 was kidnapped during the Tragedy, and they were presumed dead as their bodies were never found. The truth is much more disturbing: They were whisked away to a remote location for a different sort of... research. But not one of them was aware they were under a theoretical microscope. What they did know is that they were trapped in a "Killing Game", and to escape they needed to kill a classmate and fool everyone else. A game Maki might've played if she didn't have experience dealing with shady entities and knowing they couldn't be trusted for shit. (人◕ω◕)

... But as obstinate as she was in the beginning, keeping to herself and refusing to get attached, eventually the Mastermind(s) found ways to push her buttons. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕) The first round Maki avoided becoming a "killer", but in subsequent loops...? You better believe she was pressured just like everyone else.

Yes, they were trapped in a Killing Game "loop". Their memories always wiped (repressed) or adjusted so they only retained certain ones. Sometimes false memories were even manufactured so they could be used later; Class 79 were put through theater/TV productions to make them believe the memories they were acting out (unknowingly) were real. So seeing a "city" in ruins, they believed it to be Tokyo. Rifling through those ruins for supplies and shelter. And so on and so forth. (人◕ω◕) Each loop was unique, and sometimes they were given false names and talents to see what would happen. Maki was generally kept an assassin in the shadows, waiting to strike when she was pushed too far.

But like the Hope's Peak and Jabberwock Killing Games, life is never so simple. Even in these scripted loops. (人◕ω◕) Maki was never a thorough, dyed-in-the-wool blackheart. She never pretended to be an idealist or a sap like Kaito or Kaede. However, deep down she possessed some scruples. Maki was more of a gray character. An antihero if it came down to it. When she didn't succumb to motives or manipulations, Maki was dragged into bonding with Kaito, and subsequently Kaede and Shuichi who were joined at the hip with the idiot.

They weren't always all alive each loop. Whether the "survivors" took down the "Mastermind" or not, it was more normal for one or two of them to die by the end of each loop. Still, regardless of which varied combination, these three became Maki's anchors to morality and humanity. Kaito appeared to be her favorite for several loops… And even up to the most recent loop, Kaito seems to know from instincts how to reach out to her; it takes persistence and showing her your heart. (人◕ω◕) Maki might still treat you like a nuisance, might begrudge you every inch of your effort, but eventually you'll wear her down if you squint. She's not the most open person. Maki doesn't like mushy crap (at least she won't ADMIT anything).

… But as special as Kaito was, after a while Maki began avoiding him on instinct. Not out of spite or hatred of him, but deep down her subconscious remembered losing him more than once, and she rightly or wrongly came to associate those miserable feelings with "I'm cursed because of my past and bloodied hands, I can't risk Kaito dying because of me." These loops have made all of Class 79 a hot mess, and they keep acting on impulses and instincts they don't understand at all because their memories keep getting repressed each loop. (人◕ω◕) It makes the study of Class 79… fascinating~

So what happens? Well, we get a case of Maki stuck at a crossroads. Sometimes the darkness consumes her because she isolates herself so completely. Other times she "remembers" she has friends (unconsciously) and she becomes a risky yet dependable ally if the chips fall just right. (人◕ω◕) And who do we have to thank for Maki's…growth? Surprisingly it's not the sappy sacks, Kaede and Kaito. Those two don't give up, and they did wonders in getting her to open up… But Maki is NOT a ball of sunshine. As nice as it can be to indulge in their "never say die" attitudes sometimes, you know it's not good to stare into the sun too long, right? (人◕ω◕)

This…is where Shuichi comes in. He's as much a "prisoner" as she is with those blowhards, even if it's annoying to deal with his lack of self-esteem. (人◕ω◕) Shuichi is more grounded… And despite becoming an artificial "Ultimately Detective" throughout the loops, he really sucks at doubting others in the beginning. It leads Maki to watch out for him and teach him that some people just aren't worth believing in. She's a heavy pessimist, and thinks the two of them will inevitably be at odds because of her real identity. Yet she's proven wrong time and again as Shuichi puts in the effort to reach out to her even after she's exposed as an assassin throughout the loops. They keep having this conversation where Maki argues assassins exist in part because of detectives, and Shuichi keeps arguing back he'll work towards a world where Maki can live the way she wants to. Where assassins won't be "needed". (人◕ω◕) Maki has no reason to believe he'll pull it off. He sounds as idealistic as the space idiot… Yet some part of her deep down WANTS to see what this shoddy excuse of a detective manages to do. It's irrational. But she can be perfectly candid and transparent with Shuichi and not get bombarded with cheesy hugs or empty reassurances that everything will be okay. Shuichi is trying to end these Killing Games and find the Mastermind, and sure he's not the most awe-inspiring guy that ever existed. But it means a lot that he listens and tries playing devil's advocate. He does get caught up in Kaede and Kaito's optimism, but Shuichi isn't a total suckup that just goes along with all their whims. He does try being the detective they all sorely need. (人◕ω◕)

… Now, Kokichi gravitating to Shuichi all the damn time… It gets on Maki's nerves and she despises the troll. She can't figure the little shit out, and a large part of that is his friendship with Shuichi is GENUINE despite how much he messes around. (人◕ω◕) Maki doubles down on watching out for Shuichi because of that turd.

Romance between them is slow, and doesn't happen often. It usually takes specific conditions, like Kaede or Kaito dying. But it's not just a consoling type of relationship, they've been building up to this whether they knew it or not. Maki isn't overly sappy or shameless like those other hussies, but she does get…jealous. (人◕ω◕) She's affectionate with Shuichi in her own unique way, and she appreciates the reciprocation even if his confidence could use a damn overhaul. Has several girls hanging off him, and he thinks he has nothing to offer? For a detective he sure misses the small stuff. (人◕ω◕) Like that it shouldn't matter what HE thinks of himself. That's not how attraction works. If he WAS vain or self-absorbed, Maki would probably throttle him and not talk with him nearly as much. (人◕ω◕) If he could just have SOME self-love, that'd tie it all up with a nice little bow. But oh well, fixing that stuff is on Kaede or Tenko. Maki's here to temper his detective work and salvage her own soul somewhat. Don't you judge her. (人◕ω◕)

The Ending... or a new Beginning...?

Eventually the loops will end. Class 79 survivors will enter a period of collective comas because their minds can only handle so much. (人◕ω◕) But the comas won't be forever. And their repressed memories will return to them over the coming months and years. It's gonna take a lot of counseling and rehab to come to grips with the past five years.

Maki…is left not knowing what to do. For the first time in her life, a blank canvas of her future lies before her, and she doesn't have the first idea what to commit to paper. The cult is gone. The Steering Committee is gone. The whole underworld is in chaos and getting reshaped to fit the new post-apocalyptic world. If she goes back to assassin work, she's basically continuing Ultimate Despair's agenda, and that's a whole new level of darkness she isn't completely sure she wants any part in. (人◕ω◕) For better or worse, she missed out on the Tragedy because she was trapped with her class. She knows criminal elements will continue existing. But now she's being given an out - a completely blank slate. If she chooses to go back to what she's always known, that's suddenly on her. No messed up adults forcing her to obey them. (人◕ω◕)

… So Maki drifts to Shuichi's humble new agency he opens up. Shuichi would benefit from someone that's had experience on the other side of the fence of the law, and has her ear to the pavement on sheer instinct, listening to the underworld rumblings. Despite Kirumi being cagey about Maki showing up out of the blue, Shuichi trusts her. Maki's the second one to show up and offer to lend a hand… Well, maybe third, if you counted Kokichi…? But regardless, Maki's experience and knowledge is invaluable to his mission of creating a better world, one step at a time. (人◕ω◕) Maki still thinks he's shooting for the moon, he's still several steps behind criminal elements. That's just how it is for detectives.

Yet working with Shuichi isn't a strain, isn't like a boulder tied around her neck. It's her choice and she's making something of her life. Finally. (人◕ω◕)

Kaede, Miu, and Tenko are exhausting to deal with, but the biggest headache for Maki is Kirumi who makes her jump through so many hoops to just be around Shuichi. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕) And if anything, the distrust is mutual because Maki remembers some loops where Kirumi became a "killer", too… Of course Kirumi is quick to point out SHE has never killed anyone for real. Maki HAS. (人◕ω◕) Not that that's a comfort to Maki after the maid tried covering up her crimes in the loops… She's not paragon of virtue and justice either. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)

But such is life~… Whether they like it or not, these five all love Shuichi, and Shuichi loves them all. If you think it's spicy while they're all dating Shuichi, just want until marriage. … And parenthood. (人◕ω◕)/

Mostly stays out of other countries’ business, but will step in as a last resort 

Has some of the most well-known citizens in the world because… they’re pure chaos

Has vast deposits of ores and gemstones, and the metalwork from Crystallos (mainly weaponry, armor, and jewelry) is highly sought after 

The only known food export is potatoes.  Wonder why…

Known for causing chaos in other countries, but after an Incident with Crystallos they have kept their meddling to annoyances rather than outright declarations of war 

Considered the most magical of all the countries, and traditional enchantments almost all come from Valeriana 

Associated Colors: neon green (duh), bright yellow, forest green, light brown, blood red (more saturated than Crystallos), rose gold 

Aesthetic/Vibes: spooky art nouveau (idk what else to call it), lots of plants and nature but with an edge of danger, poison gardens and carnivorous plants, hedge mazes that lead everywhere and nowhere, laughter deep in the forest, deer with eyes just a hair too human, Alice in Wonderland on steroids

Makes sure that no laws are broken between different countries and everyone gets a fair shake 

Has a very large reach, so some members have dabbled in espionage for various groups 

From the outside it looks like the whole thing is kept together with duct tape and hope, but its actually pretty functional

The main members are just… a lot. 

More concerned with keeping things working than influencing other nations (although there are still jokes about it) 

The most valuable thing they trade in is information

They have a lot of fingers in a lot of pots, but are trusted with their information

The Astral Academy

An independent university focused on advancing knowledge in the arcane arts and engineering 

Not a country, but has the political power of one due to their vast resources and building prowess 

People can’t enter unless they are invited or have been given entry as a student 

There are a bunch of potential doors scattered around the continent that could lead to the Academy, but no one is sure where the real entrance is

1. Rukia is getting a lethal bear hug from her opponent and Ichigo is having more Shonen banter with Ulqui, so 269 is off to a good, fight-y start.

2. The title of 269 is intriguingly slashy so I’m expecting some good IchiUryuu banter too. Anyway back to this fight, which commenters tell me is going to be EPIC.

3. Big Dude, who I stilll Loathe BTW, is getting absolutely OWNED by Uryuu, who is jumping up many notches on my faves list. If he offs this guy the potential is unlimited.

4. Ulqui immediately starts shipping IchiUryuu within like two seconds of watching them talk. I knew you were a man of taste and culture Ulqui.  

5. Back over to Rukia and the Attack of the Clones. or Dolls. Then back to Ichi vs Ulqui, who explains that Ichi doesn’t want to fight Hollowfied cause Hime doesn’t like it. Uryu deduces that apparently Full Power Ichi would fry Hime. Like getting her too close to the sun or something.

6. GUYS SHE HAS SHIELD POWERS + HEALING POWERS AND CAN REVERSE TIME ITSELF. I mean, I guess these two haven’t seen her do that much, but still. Anyway Uryu is indeed thrashing Big Dude, so I am liking him more and more. Big Dude if you hurt him I swear, you’re already so Cancelled...I don’t know how much more to cancel you.

7. Some quick catching up with the side fights, including Renji and Chad joining Ruki in her Neverending Clone Battle, ensues. Also Renji and Rukia have reunited and immediately fall back into FightFlirting with each other. YAS my ship just be yourselves and I’ll still love ya.

8. Uryuu does indeed thrash the Big Dude and I am very happy. HE ACTUALLY DROPS HIM DOWN SEVERAL STORIES. Not sure how many spots this has ticked him up on my faves list but it should be quite a few.  

9. LOL and Ichi Ulqui and Hime have waited patiently for their fight to watch Uryu’s. LOL is my MC Trio gonna leave the screen and join me to  provide their own commentary. IchiUlquiHime watches bleach. 

10. Anyway Ichi and Uryu start RivalFlirting and he assigns Uryu to protect Hime. Yeah like the dude with a bow protect the girl who can reverse time, that makes sense. Anyway. Ichi goes Super Saiyan for Ulqui and they finally get back to fighting. 

11. Ulqui looks legit unsettled by HollowIchi and immediately drags him into - another dimension, I think? Or into the ceiling. So they’re gonna fight By the Light of the Silvery Moon. 

12. Ulqui does the Final Form (or 2nd form at least) thing, which involves more eye makeup and Giant Bat Wings. And longer hair. So now he looks like a vampire. Excellent, even sexier. 

13. The fight continues in fancy rain. Ulqui lands a hit on Ichi pretty easily in this new form. We go into Bullet time to follow Ichi as he dodges. This is pretty cool TBH.

14. We have some dramatic worrying between Uryu and Hime. He makes her smile. Best Boy. 

15. Up in the skies Ulqui is begging Ichi to let give him everything he’s got. Presumably so he can stand there like a badass while it does nothing. And say “you should’ve gone for the head.

16. As expected Ulqui is fine. And unleashes a shot at Ichi that makes everything shake, worrying Ichi’s boyfriend and girlfriend. Hime, who is getting sick of this “standing around not contributing” shit and asks Uryu to take her to the battle with a FIERCE look. YAS  I knew they wouldn’t bench my girl.

17. Ichi gets his ass kicked badly. And Ulqui, instead of going for the killing blow, chooses to monologue. LOL that’s why we like him. Given the choice he will always monologue. 

18. Apparently this wasn’t even Ulqui’s FINAL final form. Anyway we cut back to Hime and Uryu flying on a disk a la a magic carpet into Green light world. 

19. Actual Final Form Ulqui is shirtless with Faun legs, bat wings and long ears. A bit like Grimmjow’s actually. And he’s annoyed that Ichi is Still not impressed. Ichi is Also Shirtless, BTW, so our leads will continue this fight half Naked. Because Shonen.

20. Ulqui is apparently baffled by the notion of fighting someone stronger than yourself. He does not understand this whole Power of Friendship thing. 

21. Uryu and Hime arrive just in time to see their boyfriend get strangled. Ulqui is like Oh it’s Hime and proceeds to ask her to watch him kill Ichi. HOLY CRAP.  Neat cliffhanger!

Destiel: Season 4 - A catalog of Supernatural episodes

I recently binge-watched the entire Supernatural series, and I’m now obsessed. I’m a little bummed that I’m only just now getting into this fandom, especially since the upcoming 15th season will be its last. But better late than never! To fill the time between now and the start of the new season, I’ve decided to catalog each episode that features scenes related to Destiel. This includes scenes between Dean and Castiel, of course, but also scenes with other characters that address their relationship with each other. I will also include scenes that allude to Dean’s bisexuality. I know that Destiel is not officially canon, but I ship it hard, and I think it is a valid reading of the series. Although Dean is not explicitly portrayed as bisexual, there is a significant amount of queer coding in his behavior, especially with regard to Castiel. So here we go, starting with season 4!

Season 4 Summary Analysis:

Dean is intimidated by Castiel at first but becomes more comfortable with him over time, especially as he grows apart from Sam. Cas is curious about and amused by Dean from the beginning. Cas grows fond of Dean over time. Inspired by Dean’s devotion to his brother and determination to do what is right, Cas rebels against heaven, following in the footsteps of his former mentor, Anna.

4.01 Lazarus Rising

Dean is freaked out by the “bad mojo” surrounding his resurrection. He’s intimidated by Cas’s power. 

Cas looks down on Dean: “This is your problem, Dean. You have no faith.” 

Cas pities Dean: “You don’t think you deserve to be saved.”

4.02 Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester

Castiel is amused at Dean’s ignorance: “Read the Bible. Angels are warriors of God. I’m a soldier.” “I’m not here to perch on your shoulder.” 

Dean is irreverent and Castiel comes down on him hard: “Our numbers are not unlimited. Six of my brothers died in the field this week. You think the armies of heaven should just follow you around? There’s a bigger picture here. You should show me some respect. I dragged you out of hell; I can throw you back in.” Dean is visibly freaked out by this show of aggression, but also seems to respect Cas more afterward.

4.03 In the Beginning

Cas is curious about Dean: “What were YOU dreaming about?” 

Dean is frustrated by Cas’s ambiguous communication. 

Cas feels sympathy for Dean when he sees Mary make the deal with Azazel.

Dean is intimidated by Cas’s threat: “Your brother is headed down a dangerous road, Dean, and we’re not sure where it leads. So stop it, or we will.”

4.06 Yellow Fever 

Dean flirts with a guy at the Sherriff’s office while he’s under the influence of ghost sickness.

4.07 It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester 

Cas is confused by Dean’s unwillingness to do whatever it takes to stop Lucifer. 

Cas calls Uriel out on his hatred of humans: “You’re close to blasphemy.”

Cas believes in Dean: “There is a reason we were sent to save him. He has potential. He may succeed here.” 

Cas is impressed by Dean’s determination to save people: “I’m not here to judge you, Dean.” “You misunderstand me, Dean. I’m not like you think—I was praying that you would choose to save the town.” 

Cas demonstrates his love for humanity: “These people, they’re all my father’s creations. They are works of art.” 

Cas opens up to Dean out of respect and sympathy: “Can I tell you something if you promise not to tell another soul? I’m not a ‘hammer’, as you say. I have questions. I have doubts. I don’t know what is right and what is wrong anymore, or whether you passed or failed here. But in the coming months you will have more decisions to make. I don’t envy the weight that’s on your shoulders, Dean. I truly don’t.”

4.10 Heaven and Hell 

Cas tries to reason with Sam and Dean about Anna to avoid fighting: “She is far from innocent.” 

Cas is visibly uncomfortable with being forced to kill Anna. 

Dean demonstrates his awe of angels: “You guys are powerful, perfect. You don’t doubt yourselves, or God, or anything.” 

Anna helps Dean understand why angels are cold and emotionless: “Perfect—like a marble statue: cold, no choice, only obedience.” 

Dean and Anna connect over absent fathers, and she helps him feel better about the PTSD he is experiencing from being in hell. Dean’s experience with Anna helps mitigate his fear and awe of angels.

Uriel tells Dean about Castiel’s affinity toward him: “You see, he has this weakness—he likes you.” 

Cas is intrigued and surprised when Anna, someone he looks up to, kisses Dean and says she forgives him. 

Dean saves Cas from being killed by Alistair. 

Dean, who is experiencing PTSD, is envious of the angels’ lack of emotion: “I wish I couldn’t feel a damn thing.”

4.14 Sex and Violence 

A siren takes the form of a man to seduce Dean and acts like the perfect partner who trusts his judgment. The siren drives a rift between Sam and Dean.

4.15 Death Takes a Holiday 

Cas tells Dean he is “different” from other people. 

Cas is impressed by Dean’s success in preventing a seal from breaking, but annoyed that he had to ask for help surreptitiously instead of being straightforward: “Whatever I ask, you seem to do the exact opposite.”

4.16 On the Head of a Pin 

Cas is unnerved at recent angel killings, and he’s been demoted because he’s grown too close to Dean: “My superiors have begun to question my sympathies. I was getting too close to the humans in my charge—you. They feel I’ve begun to express emotions, doorways to doubt. This can impair my judgment.” 

Cas feels bad that the angels have been so cryptic: “Dean, we know this is difficult to understand.” 

After Dean says no to torturing Alistair, it pains Cas that the angels are making him do it: “This is too much to ask, I know, but we have to ask it.” “For what it’s worth, I would give anything not to have you do this.” 

Dean goes through with the torture because Cas convinces him it’s a necessary evil. 

Anna scolds Cas for letting Dean torture and encourages him question his orders: “Who are we to question the will of God?” “Unless this isn’t His will.” “Then where do the orders come from?” “I don’t know. One of our superiors, maybe, but not Him. The father you love—you think he wants this? You think he’s ask this of you? You think this is righteous? What you’re feeling, it’s called doubt. These orders are wrong, and you know it. But you can do the right thing. You’re afraid, Cas—I was, too—but together, we can stop...” 

Cas gets defensive because he knows Anna is right: “Together... I am nothing like you! You fell!” 

After Sam gets the truth out of Alistair, Cas succumbs to his doubt and goes to Anna for guidance: “I’m considering disobedience.” “For the first time, I feel...” “Anna, I don’t know what to do. Please tell me what to do.” Anna encourages Cas to think for himself. 

Cas confronts Uriel and fights him with a renewed sense of confidence and faith: “For the first time in a long time, I am [unafraid].” 

Cas visits Dean in the hospital after Alistair’s attack and warns him about the possibility of more angels working against them. Cas demonstrates his faith in Dean: “It’s not blame that falls on you, Dean. It’s fate. The righteous man who begins it, is the only one who can finish it. You have to stop it.” “Dean, they don’t tell me much. I know our fate rests with you.” 

Dean is despondent and emotionally vulnerable with Cas: “Then you guys are screwed. I can’t do it, Cas, it’s too big. Alistair was right—I’m not all here. I’m not strong enough. I guess I’m not the man either of our dads wanted me to be.” Cas shows concern and sympathy for Dean.

4.18 The Monster at the End of this Book 

Dean prays out of desperation to save Sam, and Cas answers: “You have tested me and thrown me every which way, and I have never asked for anything. Not a damn thing. But now I’m asking. I need your help. Please.” 

Cas is frustrated that he can’t help, but then gives Dean a clue about archangels being tied to prophets: “Thanks, Cas.” “Good luck.”

4.20 The Rapture 

Cas appears to Dean in a dream and wants to tell him something urgent, but when Sam and Dean go to meet with him, they find signs of an angel fight and an unconscious Jimmy Novak. 

Cas has been re-educated by heaven: “I learned my lesson while I was away, Dean. I serve heaven, I don’t serve man. And I certainly don’t serve you.”

4.21 When the Levee Breaks 

Dean prays to Cas for help and is disappointed when Cas won’t tell him what’s going on. Cas convinces Dean to accept his fate in order to save Sam, but he is visibly uncomfortable with the situation. After Dean swears to serve heaven, he and Cas stare at each other for a long time. 

Cas follows orders to release Sam from Bobby’s panic room in secret. He also turns Anna in, although he feels bad about doing so: “You shouldn’t have come, Anna.” 

4.22 Lucifer Rising 

Cas looks pained when heaven calls on Dean and can barely look Dean in the eye: “We’ve been through much together, you and I, and I just wanted to say I’m sorry it ended like this.” 

Dean calls Cas out on his blind loyalty: “Destiny, God’s Plan? It’s all a bunch of lies, you poor, stupid son of a bitch. It’s just a way for your bosses to keep me and keep you in line. You know what’s real? People, families—that’s real. And you’re gonna watch ‘em all burn?” 

Cas explains that he’s doing it for Dean’s sake: “What is so worth saving? I see nothing but pain here. I see inside you. I see your guilt, your anger, confusion. In paradise, all is forgiven—you’ll be at peace, even with Sam.” 

Cas is surprised and upset by Dean’s negative reaction: “You can take your peace and shove it up your lily white ass, ‘cause I’ll take the pain and the guilt, I’ll even take Sam as is. It’s a lot better than being some stepford bitch in paradise. This is simple, Cas. No more crap about being a good soldier. There is a right and there is a wrong here, and you know it. Look at me! You know it! And you were gonna help me once, weren’t you? You were gonna warn me about all this before they dragged you back to Bible Camp. Help me now. Please.” 

Dean gets angry at Cas: “You spineless, soulless son of a bitch. What do you care about dying? You’re already dead. We’re done.” 

Dean’s rejection and anger ultimately lead Cas to help him escape from the angels. Cas busts Dean out against his orders and sacrifices himself to help Dean and Sam.

It’s been four months since Jeongguk’s parents kicked him out and forced their son to traverse the harsh streets of Seoul by himself. He was doing fine before, living in a hotel with the 3k donations his mother graciously gave him every month. Until his unforgiving father found out and truly cut him off for good. He comes from a very wealthy family. But money has its limits. His parents thought of Jeongguk as more of a leech for their wallets than an asset. And so, they cut him off. His 3k allowance per month? Gone. Unlimited data on his new iPhone 11? Snapped. Once Jeongguk found out, he was infuriated.

He remembers that night like it was yesterday.

“Why did you cut me off?”

“You’re not making any money any time soon, Jeongguk,” his father replied.

His mother tried to calm down her raging son, to no avail. “Jeongguk sweetheart. Unless you get a job, we can’t have you wasting our hard-earned money. You’d understand too if you got a job of your own.”

He balled up his fist but kept it at his side. “Are you joking? You guys can just make more money. I still don’t understand why I have to be the one who gets a damn job.”

“Jeon Jeongguk!” His father exclaimed in anger. “That’s enough! You’re moving out. Don’t even think about showing your face here until you can afford this house by yourself! Do you understand?”

Scoffing, he moved past his father by pushing his shoulder on his way to his room to pack his clothes. “Loud and clear, old man.”

He was always such a damn brat. Why couldn’t he have just found a job versus being kicked out? Maybe then he would still be fed proper meals and sleeping in his own room. Now he roams the streets, looking for a job before he’s kicked out of his hotel. It’s torture. And not what he deserves. At least, that’s what Jeongguk thinks anyway.

But a part of Jeongguk also thinks that he did, in fact, deserve this. But goddamn, to this extent? Could he just find a damn job and get it over with? Sure, he’s never worked a day in his life and thus only resorted to the one thing that he could do with ease: singing. He could sing his heart out, which caught the attention of many people. With the extra money he earns from busking, he saves to try and buy that house. However, he knew that this wasn’t going to enough to buy the house anytime soon. He needed a real job.  

And then it happened.

While Jeongguk was wrapping up his favorite song “FOOLS” by Troye Sivan, he came across a flyer. An opportunity. The knock on his door he’s been waiting for. The flyer read:

He’s never been to a festival let alone heard of one. Why go outside when you could just be cooped up inside the five-story sized mansion you once called home. The last time he was outside was when there was a power outage and he was practically forced to enjoy the “great outdoors”. A load of bullshit Jeongguk came to realize and therefore vowed to never go outside ever again.

The other voice on the line sighed before he answered his assistant. “Jimin, do you remember the last time you intervened?”

He groaned. “I promise I’ll control my wolf this time, Namjoon. I swear. Besides, from right here, the boy doesn’t smell too appealing.”

“And tell me what would happen if you went closer?”

Jimin paused. Truth be told, he wouldn’t know what he would do. He’s been keeping the wolf side of himself at bay for what seemed like forever. What happened two weeks prior to finding Jeongguk was a failed recruitment. Jimin’s wolf was starving for far too long and he sunk his teeth into the poor victim without remorse, leaving a lifeless corpse who never made it to Cirque de Bangtan. Namjoon was not about to let that happen again. They couldn’t afford another loss. And judging by Jimin’s lack of answering his question, Namjoon spoke up. “Don’t show yourself. Just come back to camp and get ready for the interview.”

“Your wish is my command,” Jimin smirked, turning off his walkie and heading back to the festival with the inhuman speed of a wolf he was gifted. Although Jimin might disagree with you and say he was in fact cursed.

The circus was in shambles when he did return. They just finished with their shows for the night. Popcorn boxes, candy wrappers, even water bottles couldn’t find their way into the garbage cans and therefore were left scattered around the six decorated personal tents including the huge main one that was placed in the middle of the plot of land that Cirque de Bangtan purchased not too long ago when they came to Seoul. Jimin’s was pinstriped blue and gold and was on the upper left of the main performance tent.

“It’s the other circus,” Seokjin explained. “They’re here. In town.”

“What?” Jimin was utterly confused. The other circus shouldn’t have been in town for another month. He thought they had more time before they would arrive. “That’s not fair!”

But they’re here now and that means sales will get harder and harder.”

And so far, they’ve been doing just that. Strategically placing their carnivals in the same towns that Cirque de Bangtan was visiting. They had more attractions than Cirque de Bangtan. Better ones at that. This meant that sooner or later, Cirque de Bangtan would have to hand over the title of Best Circus in South Korea over to Ko Ko Bop.

But Cirque de Bangtan was never one to back down from a fight. They fought long and hard to earn their spot as the best. And they’ll fight even longer and harder to keep that title. They just need a little help with doing so.

Enter Jeongguk who before arriving, really regretted not trying to brush his teeth or look at least somewhat professional before stumbling upon the place. But now that he was here, he breathed a sigh of relief. There was no one in sight. What time was it? Probably too late for him to do the interview. He hung his head down in shame. His one shot. And he messed it up.

At least he thought so.

“Hey, you,” he heard a voice behind him as he turned around to leave. He swung his body back around to whoever called him. The man had silver hair and a snake that was way bigger than the tiny man around his neck. It hissed when Jeongguk laid eyes on it which made him flinch.

This part of the job is something Yoongi made it clear that he despised. But deep down, he knew he would do just about anything he had to in order to keep Cirque de Bangtan. This was his—along with the other members—home.

When Jeongguk made it to the pink and blue polka-dotted tent, he was greeted with three faces. One is sitting down in a chair behind a desk and the other two on either side of the desk but without chairs. The man in the chair gave the boy a smile and said, “Hi there. I’m Kim Namjoon. The one on the left is Park Jimin and the one on the right is Kim Seokjin. You can take a seat and we’ll start the interview.”

Namjoon stepped on Seokjin’s foot for saying such harsh words to the young boy who looked ashamed by evening mentioning a stupid talent he possessed. The smile at the beginning reappeared on Namjoon’s face to try and comfort him without getting too personal. “I’m sure you can. Do you mind singing something for us?”

Jeongguk cocked an eyebrow, looking around the room for a stereo or a Bluetooth speaker of some sort. Anything to help produce sound. Unfortunately, there was none in sight. He turned back to the three men and asked, “Without music?”

“Acapella,” Jimin confirmed. He lifted his own eyebrow, but he also showed him a mischievous smirk. “What? You can’t do it, little one?” The werewolf provoked.

That prompted Jeongguk to prove just how wrong Jimin was. It brought him back to when his father kicked him out of the mansion.

And just like his old man, he was determined to do what they think he can’t. With a newfound motivation to smack that grin off the jet-black haired male, he cleared his throat in order to sing the song that he gets the most tips singing: Troye Sivan’s “FOOLS”.

As Jeongguk sang, he unintentionally pulled at the strings of Jimin’s heart. He always manages to do this whenever he saw the younger male sing which is what kept him coming back for more. Jimin could also sing. But he had to put that dream aside for this circus. So, hearing Jeongguk’s breathy angelic voice almost brought him to tears. Almost. He managed to compose himself as Jeongguk was nearing the end of the song.

“Beautiful,” Namjoon whispered. He cleared his throat and spoke a bit louder for Jeongguk to hear him. “Well then, Jeon. You got the job. You can start work tomorrow. Is that alright with you?”

Jeongguk’s eyes widen. He smiled from ear to ear. Jumping up from his seat, he shouted, “Yes! Yes! That’s perfect! Thank you! Thank you so much!”

Namjoon smiled. “No problem. Have a nice night.”

Just before Jeongguk walked out of the tent, Namjoon asked, “Do you need someone to walk you out? It gets pretty dangerous around these hours and I would hate for something to happen to our new employee.”

“Umm...” Jeongguk didn’t quite realize just how dark the night became. Usually, he’d be in his hotel room watching television or playing Overwatch.
