Vincent van Gogh ǁ The Potato Eaters (1885)
Van Gogh saw The Potato Eaters as a masterpiece. He chose a difficult composition to prove that he was on his way to becoming a good figure painter. The painting had to depict the reality of the harsh farm life. He therefore gave the peasants coarse faces and bony working hands. In this way he showed that 'with the hands they put in the dish they have dug up the earth themselves and . . . that they have earned their food so honestly'.
He painted the five figures in earthy colors, 'almost the color of a well-dusted potato, unpeeled, of course.' For Van Gogh, the message of the painting was more important than correct anatomy and technical perfection. He was very pleased with the result. However, his painting was critically received because it was so dark in color and the figures were full of mistakes. Today, The Potato Eaters is one of Van Gogh's most famous works.

Funny things that happen to me at work
The cook asked me to taste the mashed potatoes to see if it was too salty
"I don't eat mashed potatoes"
I say with an apologetic smile
"You don't eat mashed potatoes?"
She inquires with a flat tone and a bewildered expression
"I don't"
I reiterate
She looks at me
Looks at the six year old autistic kid to whom I'm a therapist
Looks back at me
Looks at my plate of carrot rice and fried fish, the skin separated from the meat at the furthest corner of the plate away from the rest of the food
Looks back at me
Back to the kid
Clearly remembering that I also don't eat any kind of spaghetti
Walks away with a face that says "I'm connecting the dots"

The Potato Eaters, Vincent van Gogh 1885
"In 1885, after months of work and meticulous preparation, Vincent van Gogh completed The Potato Eaters, a dark-toned, dynamic portrait of a peasant family around their dining table. He had high hopes for the artwork, believing that it would serve as his ticket into the Parisian art market. But the painting’s reception was negative, even scathing. “You can do better than this,” wrote Anthon van Rappard, a fellow painter and friend of van Gogh, in a letter."

91. Purple Potato Eaters.
Another Walrus episode in the books. :D
The best parts of this episode for me are the songs. Everything else is kinda... eh. You can feel the final 10 scraping the bottom of the barrel for story ideas. It's okay, just not one of my favorites.
For this one I decided to design an Instant Purple Potato Pancake mix. I thought the idea was cute and just kinda ran with it. *shrug*
