Got another tattoo 6 days ago.
I'm in my "I need cosy and serotonin"-era so I combined the book character that gives me cute agression with an indirect reference to my favourite cosy show and love for ceramics and my favourite beverage.
Meet my Snöfrid aus dem Wiesental /the great pottery throwdown/ Raku /coffee tattoo 💖
Tumblr media
Also yes one of the reasons he's looking like that is because as we know from the show Raku fired ceramics aren't food or drink safe due to the low temperature during firing.

I think that me binging all 5 seasons of the great pottery throwdown in like 4 days when I had covid in 2022 has somehow attached to my soul cause I've rewatched the entire series once per year since then

don't get me wrong: the great pottery throwdown is one of my favourite shows ever. HOWEVER it is absolutely a show for non-ceramicists.

If you're fed up with the way GBBO has lost a lot of the soft quiet charm with gentle encouragement from judges and hosts, switch to the Great Pottery Throw Down.
The judges are so emotional about the skills the contestants demonstrate, they're so proud of them! 😭
Also Sister Michael is hosting now and she's a delight.
Edit: You learn a lot about how pottery works!

Catching up on yesterday’s The Great Pottery Throwdown and as the challenge the potters l had to throw a PSYKTER - an Ancient Greek wine-cooler!
Tumblr media
It’s likely that snow-cooled water would have been put inside the psykter and it placed inside a krater of wine, to cool it. There’s not a lot that survive - they went out of fashion, not being that practical, apparently - but I love the idea of them bobbing on the liquid surface with decorations like these dolphin riders!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pottery Throwdown is already a great programme, connecting many of us with pottery, an age-old practice almost ubiquitous with humanity, in a way that most people don’t get to any more, and I’m always reminding my Classics students to watch it to give them a better understanding of the vessels they’re studying!

this fireplace! is ceramic!! specifically with a notoriously stiff and hard-to-work-with clay because it has to be a fireplace!!! What The Heck!!!!!
imagine someone's look of horror as you light a fire in what looks to be a cardboard fireplace

OKAY BUT-
Hear me out...great british baking show and great pottery throwdown are based on amateur bakers/potters competing, right? So why was Matt even there? He's a ceramics teacher at a school. He makes a living making pottery.
He did great work, but he's not an amateur 🤷

Woodworking, of all things, is trending (with spam porn the first image natch), so this is a good time for another episode of
SEMI-OBSCURE MEDIA SAM LOVES:
It's Bake Off! With woodworking! It even has Mel Giedroyc! End of pitch!

Watched all of the most recent series of Great Pottery Throw Down which I love + is one of my all-time comfort TV shows. I think my favourite challenge this season was the novelty teapots.
Also watched the most recent series of Great British Menu. This year, the theme was the Olympics (which they have done before in 2012) which I guess does give the chefs some scope. I wonder what they will do next year - maybe something to tie in with the anniversary of World War 2 ending. I think they could probably also do a good one themed around the National Trust + all the National Trust properties.
