But they 3!7 Do not look upside down :)...
(LMAO from a compliment to m'y own Comic lore XD , sorry for Wasting Ur Time lol ;-;)
I guess by "How r u so good?" you mean my drawings… well, I've been drawing for about 13 years non-stop (since I was 2) and well, I'd be a mediocre artist if I couldn't draw something decent :( And well, the only published Demeddtial AU like drawings, videos and just one minicomic for now are on my social networks, but the comic itself is still in production, since I just started writing chapter 6 (and I haven't finished the chapter 6 yet due to writer's block)

Chapter 18 is up! Zee battles post-crash/high mood swings; Crowley gets a reality check from Ana. (Comes with some mediocre art, because I’m a writer, not an artist. Don’t judge. It was my very first attempt at digital media!)
***** Crowley: Hey Zee—which of these two couches do you like better?
Ana: Tell him they’re both shit and he should stop shopping at ikea
Crowley: Fuck off
Ana: Also the couch has to match the throne, have you seen it yet?
A photo followed this—a much younger Crowley, probably late twenties, with short hair and a gaunter look to his cheekbones. He lounged, slumped in the most ridiculous chair that Zee had ever seen. His eyes, outlined in thick kohl, stared at the camera with feigned nonchalance—a queen on his “throne.” The jeans he wore looked impossibly tight, especially with his legs spread, one flung over the arm of the chair. It was deliciously inviting, for all it pretended to be casual.
Crowley: Uuuugh do you have to keep showing that stupid photo to everyone?
Ana: yes
***** Fic description: Zee (Aziraphale) Marsh is a widowed hermit who secretly writes bestselling romance novels under the pseudonym Bella Swansea. His life is rigorously controlled until his new downstairs neighbor arrives. Anthony Crowley causes something to come alive in Zee that he hasn't seen in over twenty years, but Crowley brings with him some of his own very dark secrets. // Human AU, dark fic, E rating.

FAQ: OC Fanzine
Wow! What a response! Thank you all so much for the lovely comments left on the document, we really weren't expecting this. We've noticed a few repeating questions popping up in responses, so here's a post designed to clarify some things. What will I actually be DOING? Fear not! All will be explained when we finalize the format. For now, this is what we have in mind: You would be given a blank template of a 'case file' that you would fill out with the information of your OC. So, all you'd need to do is provide some art and info that would fit what the template asks! Think less fanfiction, more character profile. We will allow for some artistic liberties and creative freedom to keep the pages from getting too stale, writing wise. As an example, think of an anecdote from disgruntled PRT employees ranting about how this one independent cape is so RUDE, or a few extra lines within personal history for a villain who's got a complicated history. As for artists who want to participate don't have OC's, you'd give us art depicting other scenes from Bet to provide contrast between the more structured case files versus the reality of life on a world with superheroes, or help provide the small mugshots for writers. What does adopting an artist/writer mean? It means you want to team up with someone to work on a submission! Do I NEED to adopt a writer or an artist? Of course not! While we encourage people to collaborate and assist each other, if you can handle both parts yourself, by all means, go ahead! What does needing help with a submission mean? If you checked one of those two boxes, it means you're an artist or writer who needs help either getting art or words down for your character. The artists would provide a mugshot or something similar to the writer- nothing too strenuous, as we're thin on artists as it is- and the writers would assist the artists will filling in character details, such as history or personal anecdotes. As it stands, we have about a 70/30 split between writers vs artists, so definitely share this project with any art friends who you think would be interested in participating! I know X person, can we be paired up together? If you two are both on board with working together, sure! In that case, don't ask for assistance, that's for people who need help getting one part of their piece done. Will this be one OC per person, or can you submit more then one? So long as you submit a completed piece before the deadline (and don't worry, a schedule will be posted), feel free to do more then one! Just don't overtax yourself or your potential partner- and keep in mind, we want quality over quantity! We'd much rather have one very well-written or drawn piece vs three mediocre ones. Can I use Picrew/Avatar Maker/ect to make my character's art? We're going to say no to this, sorry. Can I use my SI? We're going with a no on that one. And yes, that includes OCSI's. Can I use my alt!Taylor? Nope! OC's only. I have a character from Earth Aleph/Gimel/an AU. Can I use them? Since the format of the zine is going to be Bet's PRT personnel files, we're afraid not. Sorry! That's all for now, but as the interest check and time go on, we made update this post, so be sure to check in. And once again, thank you all for the enthusiasm!

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you so much @thenookienostradamus and @lordoftherazzles for the tag...
Let's see...
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 554 (with two not revealed yet as we speak...). Many of those are collections, though.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 1,986,915 (erm...yeah...well)
3. What fandoms do you write for? Tolkien (The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silm). (+ the odd AU or Richard Armitage movie)
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? Tumblr Imagines (Wild Mix of everything) , October 2022 Ficlet run (same), A key change (Remix Fic), Black (Thorin x OC), Silm imagines and ficlets (Wild Mix again)
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes, in due time. I struggle a lot with being overwhelmed at times (imposter syndrome, fear of not knowing what to say, comments heaping up), but I am so thankful for every comment that I do try to answer them all in a timely manner.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I've written about 1k fics; I do not remember all of them :s I generally don't write angst, so I really couldn't say. Sorry :(
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Everything? I am a Happy Ending person, so most of my fics (eventually) get a happy ending :D
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not yet (crossed fingers). At times, I get comments I don't really understand (autism ahoi), but I hope that people didn't mean anything mean by it :)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? SMUT? ME? Noooo *cough*...Let's say it has happened! What kind? What kind do you want, baby? MF, FF, MM, trans characters, non-binary characters, threesomes, it has all happened. Sweet and tender? Check. Rough and dirty? Check. Dubconny and dark? Check. Just tell me what you want, and there is a good chance I've either done it or would do it :D
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I have written one crossover for an event (where characters go into a whole different franchise). Otherwise, I am an AU bitch. Disney movies, musicals, you name it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Again, not that I know of.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Once for an event. Otherwise, I think one could call what @cilil and @melkors-big-tits did for the calendar co-writing. In a way, many collabs with artists are co-written. Any event collab is co-writing (to me). Me stealing @cilil's ideas is co-writing. Me asking for ideas on the @fellowshipofthefics and @tolkienpinupcalendar servers is co-writing. So...yes...yes I have, and I've loved it.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Ori x OC, Maedhros x Fingon, Eönwë x Gothmog
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Black. It's one of my first fics, and there's only a chapter or so missing...but I don't know if I'll ever finish writing that last chapter. There are a few more where I've written 1-5 additional chapters and never uploaded them...for reasons (?). By now, I am too ashamed and lazy to get back to them.
16. What are your writing strengths? Versatility and speed. I am a mediocre writer in my 5th foreign language, and I make no bones about it. Nevertheless, I am willing to give anything and everything a try :D
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I am extremely wordy. It takes me too long to get to the smut. I refuse to describe settings and geography, so all my plots seem a bit floating and vague.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I avoid using languages I don't speak which includes Tolkien's languages. I am too afraid to make mistakes or to sound cringe to people who know better than me. As for RL languages...a word maybe, but a whole sentence (again) might feel contrived...IDK everyone does as they want, but I am not feeling it for myself.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Hamilton (and yes, those stories are orphaned and can never be traced back to me) Otherwise, the Hobbit LOL
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Monkey-business, because I really liked writing that fic. It's a kitschy Hallmark Christmas story featuring Ori (not interesting, I know). But that's my personal fave lol...
Hmmm, let's tag @maglor-my-beloved, @lathalea, @scyllas-revenge, @laurfilijames, @middleearthpixie, @littlesweetdressmaker, @legolasbadass, @urwendii, @cilil, @the-red-butterfly, @fishing4stars, and @elentarial to get a good mix of people :D

1, 15, 29, 30? 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Welp, forgot to post these answers… 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you for asking, friend!!! From the more fic writer asks:
01. the last sentence you wrote
Struggling mightily to get to the bits I want (and start fast-forwarding so I can finish it) but. Here it is. Will it get taken out by the time I finish writing this chapter? Who knows!
“The last six months have felt like a small eternity.”
15. favorite weather for writing
I don't have a strong preference! Whatever fits the mood of what I'm writing best?
29. how easy is it for you to come up with titles?
It depends! For some stories, I'll have a few titles/songs in mind that fit the vibe right away (about a fourth of them? I have examples but it was getting long lol). But the truth is that, more often than not, I'll spend forever trying to find something. It's funny that I tend to gravitate towards a song or artist I was loving at the time I originally wrote the story.
The big AU probably has a title now, but it took me 9 months to find one. (Good thing writing in that one is sporadic. 😭 Remember when I set a deadline in the middle of this month to finish and then *gestures* life happened?)
30. share a fic you’re especially proud of
God, this is hard. As much as I might think my writing is… mediocre at best, I am proud of most of what I've posted! I have a couple of them in mind, but I'll go with my Portland fic, don't want you to go but I'll be okay. (One day I'll sit down and actually re-read my fics and realize how much I do enjoy them. It's happened before! One day.)

fic excerpt - bright as the stars
here’s another excerpt from chapter one of my au, bright as the stars. ian’s an actor who hosts a space-themed kids show called Interstellar Ian
this scene shows svetlana’s role in this universe as ian’s hair stylist/makeup artist and establishes mickey’s existence in this universe. this is like, the end of a larger scene, but I don’t wanna give you guys too much. enjoy!
Svetlana seemed entirely unshocked when words bubbled out of the ginger’s mouth as if he couldn’t stop them, as if he couldn’t possibly stay quiet and let the lady do her job.
That’s something that came with spending your teenage years acting: you get used to always talking.
“How was your weekend?” Ian questioned. Lana thought about it before answering a question he didn’t actually ask,
“They hired a new boy to the set.” she said as if she were just remembering, “I was packing up my supplies on Friday and suddenly, this cigarette-smoking ukrainian man is walking around in blue suit much less glamorous than yours. He was rude. I didn’t like him.”
Ian furrowed his eyebrows. He was usually informed when they casted someone new, but it sounded like this guy wasn’t an actor anyways.
“Oh! It’s the new electrician.” The actor realized after a moment, “I heard a spotlight operator say that something wasn’t working right through last week. And they just finally decided to hire someone long-term for the job.”
Ian remembered how whenever there were technical difficulties on set, the tech crew worked to fix it and if they couldn’t, they called whatever number they could find on local advertisements. It was always a different person that came in, unfamiliar with the wires and lights and sets of the warehouse and always one step in the wrong direction away from knocking over thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
So, by the beginning of season eight, they finally worked out a contract with an on-call electrician that would be around to help with whatever issues arose.
And apparently, said electrician was a rude Ukranian with a nicotine addiction.
“He was handsome, though. Tattoos, dark hair…your type of boy, I’m sure.” Svetlana mused, “You are still sworn off men, yes?”
“That makes me sound like a loner or someone saving myself for marriage.” he groaned. “I’m just…not looking for anything right now, y’know? Especially not with anyone who works on this set. I can’t- and won’t, do that again. Ever.”
“It’s not much of a problem if the man isn’t your costar or boss.” Svetlana pointed out, “Fucking writer’s room boy didn’t have many consequences, no?”
“It’s still not a good idea.” Ian insisted, straightening up slightly when Lana tapped his shoulder. She was now adding some creamy makeup over his eyelids, glancing between the two in order to check if they were even, tapping away with brushes and the tips of her fingers.
“Plus, how do you know ‘my type’? I don’t think I’m crazy for rude electricians.”
Before Svetlana could even try to reply, he was rambling again.
“Men can’t get away with being broke, having a bad personality, and looking mediocre. If you check off all three boxes, you might as well give up on love, I think. Mean electrician checks off two out of three, and he’d have to be crazy hot to rebalance the scale.”
“And what boxes do you check off?” Lana asked, sounding amused now.
“None! I’m perfect!” Ian replied without missing a beat. He wasn’t truly that confident, but the mock-annoyed eye roll he earned from his makeup artist made his face light up.
Even though they had grown, independently and closer, over the course of five years, it felt like their dynamic had been more or less the same since season one. It was a playful thing, where Svetlana pretended not to care for him and expressed annoyance and Ian played into messing with her whenever he got the chance.
Maybe it was childish, but he loved it.
“Shut up and tilt your head back, orange boy.” she ordered, tugging on Ian’s hair gently. She somehow made the motion look rough, though.
Ian complied, smile clear across his face.
The freckles that had once been on his face then were long faded away, but he couldn’t help but compare that moment to one from his first days on that set, when Svetlana was brand new to this career and asking him if he looked okay every few seconds.
There was that same playfulness. That same smile. That building comfort they now had with each other.
Ian loved being Interstellar Ian, because it lead to things- to relationships, like this.
remember to follow me if you’re interested in this au so you know when i get around to posting the first couple chapters of this! feel free to reblog with thoughts and send any questions you have my way! thanks <3

Maglor: An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen?
veryyyyy late response for this ask game
So like, I kind of have to modify the intent of this question because there's basically no new info coming out re: Maglor, since jirt is dead and the publication of canon-complicating materials has slowed somewhat. My general feeling on the revelations of further letters and scribbles salvaged from the wastepaper bin is that they're super interesting, make the case for interesting new readings or AUs, and can generally be layered into the compository approach I take to drafting a personal reading, but aren't inherently superior to what is published canon. Cons: people still use niche texts to start fights. Pros: no one is going to veronica mars the silm fandom.
I'm going to run with this in terms of new media adaptations. I'm kinda burned on new adaptations because they I am not confident they can satisfy my three needs: 1) deconstructing the issues integral to jirts original work, 2) break with PJ's stylistic choices and inserted issues, 3) write a good story. I think the benefit to The Show is that it's more diverse, it's breaking trail and heading off entrenched assholes, and it raises some compelling character theories. Anything that does that is a positive. Otoh, I did not find the story cohesive or compelling as it could have been, the physical construction of some things was lackluster, and it kind of ignored jirts racisms just to create new racisms to put the characters of color through. (bear in mind that I'm white). I hold out hope because it's only on the first season, but I do think there should be be a little cohesive payout at a season finale.
This is a general issue with film right now, not just lotr adaptations, and has a lot to do with how writers/artists/crew are overworked and under-compensated, so until those issues are ameliorated, I don't think this will go away. I don't think you'll ever get 100% of what you want out of any adaptation, but one generally hopes the scale of mediocrity tips towards "enjoyably bad" rather than "forgettably bad."
All this to say, I fear subsequent adaptations will butcher my boy.

people are really acting like the progressiveness in comics is what is bringing the sales down i cant- have yall considered that maybe possibly perhaps that big western comic corporations are A: making it shit hard to actually buy comics especially for countries that are not the states so pirating is just easier and cheaper and B: have way too much alternate universes and intervowen plotlines with completely different characters and stories making it hard to follow and thus making it hard for beginners to get into and C: have shitty adaptations (which get people in to comics) that suck and/or dont follow the source material and are just quickly cranked out media for the masses or also suffer from point B.
there is a reason anime and manga having been doing so well lately. its easier to follow and get into. if i see a manga i might like i pick up #1 and continue from there. if i watch/read my hero academia i know the characters will be from my hero. there wont be a random character from another manga/anime that i am expected to know. if i read a detective manga i know its going to be a detective manga and not a manga about someone who happens to have the nickname of greatest detective being a vigilante dressed as a bat.
if i see a comic i might like i have to figure out what is happening first. i wont fully understand Batman: Hush without knowing about jasons death or all the characters relationships. if i want to pick up a series i need to figure out where to start and what comics to read before that so i understand what is going on. if i like 1 specific character (especially smaller ones) im going to have to read whole series where they appear in 10 of 40 volumes just to get some content. its exhausting, annoying and confusing. its hassle and since most western comics are mediocre its also just not worth it.
anyway in short my theory on why comics are dying and manga/anime are thriving is because comics are all in complicated extended and connected universes while manga and anime are stand-alone universes containing one (1) story. (ofc there are manga that have crossovers and extended universes but there is a reason these arent very popular or au's/"blacklabels"/not canon) this also has to do with how western comics are mainly handled by big corporations rather than independant writers/artist working under a publisher

Also on the topic of furries I don't think I ever posted my svsss alternate universe: furry au here so let me just drop it real quick
- Shen Yuan is an affluent self-proclaimed nonfurry who is "only into the cool species lore and stuff like that". His gateway into the fandom was getting into elitist closed species like dutch angel dragons and protogens and such. He paid upwards of $1k to buy Shen Jiu's DAD fursona called Shen Qingqiu without knowing that sj didn't tell any of his friends that he was quitting the fandom, so sj's old DeviantArt group Cang Qiong Mountain Sect invite him in thinking he's sj. He talks big about hating the nsfw side of the fandom but pays his share for the annual cqms fursona orgy commission anyway because it's "supporting artists".
- Luo Binghe joined cqms as a teenager and was instantly bullied for not being able to afford pricey commissions and having an edgy half angle half devile wolfsona. When Shen Yuan takes over he takes pity on lbh and buys him a Sushidog fursona, instantly making lbh fall in love with him. After this sy always makes sure to include lbh's sona with his when commissioning artists, which makes lbh jealous because he thinks that sy shouldn't be asking other people for art of his fursona, only lbh. Lbh eventually becomes a famous artist in the fandom with highly sought after incredible skills. However, he only draws Shen Qingqiu.
- Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky is a furry porn artist/writer/troll/Jack of all trades who's known for making incredibly mediocre work but never denying even the most specific fetish commissions. He thinks closed species are overly elitist and stupid and makes his own thinly veiled ripoffs of them, which draws Shen Yuan's ire and eventual obsession with arguing with him messily and publicly. Sy constantly threatens to block him but can't really do anything because Airplane is also in the cqms DeviantArt group supplying most of the lore for the group, which sy begrudgingly admits is fairly decent and interesting.
- Mobei Jun is the nonfurry heir to a hotel chain that occasionally hosts furry conventions. He had disdained furries before because a previous convention org trashed one of his family's hotels, but then had a chance meeting in a con lobby with a half-suited Airplane. Airplane was super nauseous in his suit and had to take off the head because he felt like he was going to puke. Mbj saw him during this event and fell in love at first sight with his pathetic face and how well he fit the hamster fursona. Airplane thought he was going to call security on him. After the con ended, mbj decided to research as much as he could about furries in hopes of finding the man that almost puked on his family's hotel lobby floor in an extremely mbj core conspicuous and awkward fashion.

The Writer, The Artist and The Mediocre: Chapter 3
TWTAATM au
November 3rd, 2023 Y/N Y/L/N
0700 (Writer)
‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡
Shoot. I'm so late. I rush towards the entrance of the school. Hurrying rush to class, not wanting to be late. As I'm speedwalking, I bump into someone. “Oof” they whine. Shoot. I reach my hand to help them up. Great, I'm late and I knocked someone down. Good going. I help her up and continue on my way to class. I hear a “Thanks for the greeting to my new school..” behind me. Suddenly I hear her running towards me.
“Hey, do you happen to know room 10E is?” The girl with 2 braids asked. I don't know what to do so I keep walking, hoping she'll get the hint to follow me. I have that class now. We must be in the same class. Is she new, I've never seen her before. She follows me “Excuse me??” she said. I pointed to the door, now that it was finally in sight.
As we enter, Ms Maximoff says “Thank you ladies for joining!” Ms Maximoff is really nice to me, she makes exceptions for me on presentations and such because of my situation. I take my seat, noticing the other girl still standing there. The only empty seat is next to me. “Y/N” the teacher called, bringing me out of my thoughts.
“you mind sharing with Natasha?” she continued. I look at the girl next to me, not realizing when she sat. I nodded. I don't mind, she seems nice. I feel bad for bumping into her. Her shirt has paint spilled on it. I wonder if she does art or if she just bought it like that.
Wait. What am I sharing.. My eyes scan the room, textbooks. Everyone has textbooks on their desk. I push mine so it's in the middle. Natasha. Her name is Natasha. “Thanks” Natasha whispers. I nod. Ms Maximoff is speaking but I'm just drowning her out. My eyes fixated on the blonde next to me.
Her eyes scanned my textbooks. It's coveted with my own personal notes and such to help me remember the content. "So.. you like badminton?" She whisper, looking at me. Ms Maximoff's voice spoke "Girls, quiet." We were suppose to reading the book.

▸Welcome to the Blog for My HK AU◂
Hello, and welcome to my blog! Be prepared for mediocre art and insane, 3AM crackhead ramblings. This blog is for my Hollow Knight AU, which I've called Nyctophobia. Originally, Nyctophobia was just a placeholder name but I'm attached now, please help. My personal art blog is @rottika
▸ABOUT ME◂
▸ My name is Rot, but you can also call me SFBE or Sexy Fictional Bug Enthusiast. Yes, I am normal. ▸ I'm nineteen. ▸ My pronouns are he/him. ▸ Member of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m only on anon because I’ve seen some people screenshot your asks before and get really mean about it so just as a way to be safe: you’re maybe one of three EM mutual I have on Twitter because I find that while the EM fandom has a lot of talented writers and artists, something just happens once a lot of them join Twitter. Like the toxicity of the environment gets to them or something. It’s depressing but honestly seeing people get so jumped about alternate interpretations or starting drama for no reason because they’re bored just makes me so angry. The reason I enjoy seeing you on the tl is because you’re just here to have a good time and it shows.
OMG 😂😂 ARE U SAYING PPL SCREEN SHOT MY ASKS TO TALK SHIT ABOUT THEM?? THATS HILARIOUS 🤣🤣🤣🤣 omfg GUYS WE'RE FAMOUS I'M WHEEZING!!!! rn!! omg imagine going through my garbage dump of a blog and searching through my asks to talk shit 😭😭😂😂
But yes I totally agree, I think it puts people on a pedestal to some degree, idk if its the 'fame' or what but it goes to ppl's head sometimes. It's fanfiction, it's fanart whatever ur talented but ur not special, I'm mediocre at best and I accept that 😪😪 I too see a lot of this drama for drama's sake and that's just why I don't vibe on twt as much I'm happier here to talk to u guys and just chat about stupid shit and make up AUs 😂😂 It can get very high school clique-y on twt sometimes and I don't love it 💕💕💕 BUT I LOVE Y'ALL ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ WE OUT HERE HAVING A GOOD TIME!!!!!! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

How do you know if you write well? Obviously we know you do, but you have stated in the past that you don't have the clicks or reviews that others do, despite your writing being more skilled. So how do I know if what I publish is crap because I think it is and how much is because I actually suck and nobody wants to read the embarrassment that is my fan-fiction?
Well, I'll let you in on a secret: I don't think I'm a particularly great writer. I think I'm a pretty mediocre writer. I just love to write and keep doing it, regardless of any despair over my talent (or lack thereof). Most creative people doubt in their skills at some point or another; some of us even have existential crises about it. lmao
Obviously there is a degree of objective quality in writing; even if you hated it, you wouldn't compare 'Les Misérables' to a 10-year-old's writing and claim the latter is superior. But there's a lot of space in between what is objectively well-written, i.e. something that shows a clear mastery of language, and what you, subjectively, enjoy in terms of style. Popularity in fandom is rarely, in my experience, determined by actual quality. (Which isn't to say there aren't well-written fics with loads of favourites and reviews; but they're not popular because they're well-written, they're popular because they utilized popular tropes and ships. The writing is just icing on the cake.)
One of the reasons I'm generally not very well-known or popular as a fanfic writer is because I tend not to care for popular characterisations and AUs that readers flock to, and therefore don't write them. It's often as simple as that. It doesn't matter how skilled you are: if you aren't writing what people want to read, they won't read it. So you first have to recognise that maybe in catering to your own personal tastes, you have alienated a fair number of readers right out of the gate, because you're not writing about the tropes they like. There's nothing wrong with that at all; you just have to manage your expectations accordingly, and completely divorce yourself from the concept that the amount of attention you get is in any way a reflection of your skill. But moreover, and this is the hard part: you have to stop caring about whether or not you're any good. It hinders you, and it feels terrible. I am constantly stomping on the little, whiny but-what-if-this-sucks voice in the back of my head. Well, what IF it sucks? Will the world end? Will a hobby you do in your spare time for your own personal enjoyment cease to hold that same joy just because you might not be very good at it? You're not relying on it to pay your bills. It doesn't have to hold up to the scrutiny of the market. You have nothing invested in this other than your time and absolutely nothing riding on the outcome. Of course we all want to do well and feel we're good at something; but this endless interrogation of our value as a writer and this angst over the nebulous possibility that we may not have achieved some grand, indefinable standard just hurts us, as humans and as artists.
I'll tell you something: I used to go on occasional writing hiatuses for a couple of weeks at a time, and do you know why? It wasn't because I had writer's block. It wasn't because I needed to research. It wasn't because I just didn't feel like it. It was because I felt so bad, so ridiculously, self-punishingly bad about the quality of my work. I got stuck on the idea that possibly I wasn't a very good writer; actually, surely I wasn't a very good writer: and that meant I didn't deserve to write. I shouldn't inflict it on people. Not only that, but I should feel terrible about myself for daring to not achieve some unattainable and ambiguous goal that somewhere in my own head I had set for myself. Do you know what this accomplished? Absolutely nothing. Worrying about the quality of my work certainly didn't better it; it stopped me from doing it at all. I have gotten better about this--but it literally wasn't until the last couple of years that I had brought it a bit under control, and I do still have these doubts--I just punch them in the nuts now and tell them oh goddamn well if I'm bad; I like it and I'm doing it anyway.
There is no way to know if you're a good writer; if you're questioning it, you've probably already given yourself the answer: and it will be the same answer, over and over again, and it will never be the one you want. If you are writing, you're actively practicing, and you're a better writer than you were yesterday, and the day before; and you will keep on growing until you quit the hobby, or die, whichever comes first. Do not ask if you're a good writer: that way lies madness and despair. Do you enjoy it? When you're really truly in the groove, and you've cast aside all doubts and hang-ups about whether you're any good at it, and you're simply writing--does it bring you joy? Does it mean something to you? Do you care about it? Those are the questions you ask.
