The Way It Is There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread. —William Stafford

I didn't need to change or get better. I was fine just the way I was. It was not until people interfered that I needed to protect myself and put up walls and boundaries. Now everything I do is for me. That's just the way it is now for me. Like me or leave me, either way I'm ok with it and I'm ok with the way I am now.

Got up on a cool morning. Leaned out a window. No cloud, no wind. Air that flowers held for awhile. Some dove somewhere [...] these moments count for a lot - peace, you know. Let the bucket of memory down into the well, bring it up. Cool, cool minutes. No one stirring, no plans. Just being there. This is what the whole thing is about.
— William Stafford, from "Just Thinking" in "The Way It Is: New & Selected Poems." (Graywolf Press, 1998). (via The Hammock Papers)

The Way It Is
There's a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn't change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can't get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding.
You don't ever let go of the thread.

The difficulty I’ve found with telepathy is that many times I hear and pick up on things when I’m not even trying. I’ve noticed sometimes, I may be heavy on a persons mind so their mind chatter just floods mine at random times. Even if just a passing thought of me, I’ll have everything seemingly sent to me. Smells, sounds, environments and conversations even with others. And I’ve tried closing the door so it’s only when it’s mutual. But that never seems to work fully. Like, sometimes I can turn it off but most times it just pours in like a River with no source.
I end up knowing things people are ashamed of or even offended that I know. Who needs better boundaries? Them or me? Many times these are things I wouldn’t know otherwise and most times are to my benefit to know. Because it’s happened with people who have or had ill intentions towards me. It also happens with people who have good intentions. Their mind chatter just isn’t as incessant.

Song Review: Bruce Hornsby with the BBC Concert Orchestra - “The Way it Is”
In its sunny, hit-single arrangement, “The Way it Is” did a spectacular job of hiding its dim message.
But Bruce Hornsby gave his tale of economic and racial discrimination a more appropriately melancholic presentation when he performed it live, in-studio, sans audience alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra for Radio 2’s “Piano Room Month.”
Hornsby’s voice and piano remain at the fore even with a large symphony and a slowed-down tempo at their back as the songwriter takes unaccompanied solos to add some jazz to the classical underpinnings.
It’s a testament to the strength and elasticity of Hornsby’s composition, not to mention his ability to think quickly on his butt (he is at the piano bench, after all).
As “The Way it Is” says: some things will never change. And in Hornsby’s improvisational case, that’s a good thing.
