I tragically left The Vryll Society to languish in my backlog last year, but their psychedelic pop debut, Course of the Satellite, does chessboard cover art serious justice.

Over the course of this site’s eight year history, I’ve written quite a bit about the Liverpool-based shoegaze quintet and JOVM mainstays The Vryll Society, and as you may recall, the band, which is comprised of Michael Ellis, Ryan Ellis, Lewis McGuinness, Lloyd Shearer, and Benjamin Robinson received attention from across the…

The Vryll Society is a fast-rising psych rock band from Liverpool who’ve just announced the release of their brand new single Shadow Of A Wave on Deltasonic Records. They made quite an impression when they conquered the BBC Introducing stage over at SXSW earlier this year, which was a showcase I was sad to have had to miss since I couldn’t make my way out to Austin early enough. Shadow Of A Wave follows on the heels of many other acclaimed singles over the past several years. Its a gleaming cut of jagged space rock and scuzzy riffs. Shadow Of A Wave is quite the imposing track. Though it casts a long shadow, it’s on the crest of this “wave” that we ride, gloriously partaking in its spinning drums and vitreous vocals. The single hits major retailers tomorrow, August 4th. Those in the UK can catch the band live when they play a series of shows this fall.

Introducing...The Mysterines
Who doesn’t like a puzzle? Well, here’s a riddle that cropped up throughout the mid-part of 2018; “Who Are The Mysterines?”. This was a solitary post on several social media profiles for some time. Who is this phantom band? Skip forward to the January 2019 and there’s some scant information strewn across the internet, enough to whet the appetite but not so much as to drench the palette. Thanks to a post by The Girls At The Rock Show, we know that The Mysterines are a 3 piece rock band from Liverpool, consisting of Lia Metcalf on vocals and guitar, George Favager on bass and Chrissy Moore on drums. The trio have supported Miles Kane and Vryll Society and as far as splurging their lives across the World Wide Web, The Mysterines like to let their music to the talking. There’s the occasional photo post or a gig listing but if you’re taking their Facebook page as an example, their about section pretty much points you to the group’s debut single ‘Hormone’ and that’s about it.
youtube
Like many artists that have gone down the aloof/anonymity route, The Mysterines can back up the sense of intrigue with killer music. ‘Hormone’ is a raging rock juggernaut that’s bestowed with a bluesy undertone and it’s the perfect opening gambit for the Liverpudlian stars in waiting. Front-ended by Metcalf’s rough, rasping vocals, the singer’s pipes trade blows with her own scuzzed up guitar tones. Couple that with Moore’s driving drums and Favager’s groove-some bass and you’ve got a scintillating introduction to band that sound like they’re bound for great things.
For Fans Of: Royal Blood, Early Muse, Heavier Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, White Stripes, Deap Vally
Most Likely To: Kickstart a rock revolution
Least Likely To: Keep the volume down
Key Track(s): Hormone

Watch: The Vryll Society - Light At The Edge Of The World
Psychedelic risers The Vryll Society share the video for their swirling new pop effort Light At The Edge Of The World, offering further proof of their genre-bending versatility ahead of the imminent release of their debut album. Combining the influences of Tame Impala and Stereolab, the emerging quintet delve deeper into their eclectic palette of space rock, trip hop and psychedelia on their latest single with director Peter Fearon adding his own unique interpretation within the visuals. “For the video we wanted the idea of a girl listening to the track and falling into a dream”, the band stated. “The majority of it is shot in a country garden where Peter really enhanced the colours to give it a dreamy summery vibe. The girl seems to be looking for something throughout the video and we’ve left it up to the viewer to decide what that is”. Having already produced a series of critically acclaimed singles, including live stalwarts ‘A Perfect Rhythm’ and ‘Shadow Of A Wave’, the fast-rising Merseyside outfit are primed for their first full-length release, with impressive appearances at the likes of Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and TRNSMT helping them develop a staunch grassroots following. Extensive support from BBC Introducing has arrived in the form of slots at their SXSW and Glastonbury showcases alongside a Maida Vale live session over the past 18 months, whilst widespread acclaim from Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1) and Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music) has seen the spotlight on the psych-pop quintet intensify, leading to supports with Blossoms, The Coral and The Kooks. Produced and engineered by Joe Fearon and Tom Longworth (Parr Street Studios, Liverpool), The Vryll Society’s Course Of The Satellite is released on 10th August via Deltasonic Records. The Vryll Society - Andrei Rublev
Inspired by scenes from Andre Tarkovsky’s 1996 arthouse classic film, Andrei Rublev is an emotive charge of hip-hop drums, crunching bass lines and hypnotic guitar solos, hinting further at the themes and ideas likely to form the basis of their upcoming record.
