Welcome to the Vivarium!

The Vivarium is a project that has been stuck in my mind for almost a year now, and I have finally decided to fully fledge it out and share it with the world.

In a universe where space travel is as accessible and affordable as an airplane flight, governments and corporations alike race to claim, terraform, and colonize the galaxy. And it is that second objective that is most relevant to the story of the Vivarium.

Soon after the race had begun, all parties realized that in order to create a planet suitable for human habitation, they would need to have access to the materials necessary for terraforming. And thus, in an agreement between seventy-one human governments and thirty-six corporations, the Vivarium Initiative was founded.

The Vivarium is a shared planet consisting of eight major continents, as well as countless smaller islands. The planet is divided into 200 preserves, protected areas scarcely influenced by humans, which cover 76% of the land and 7% of the ocean. The remaining quarter of land is home to 800 million humans, acting as citizens of one large globe-spanning “nation.”

When a state or company wishes to obtain a creature or plant or any living organism, they must pay for the organism itself, as well as a small tax when buying in bulk. While this may seem like an insignificant detail, when the hundreds of species a political power may need for their next project, the amount certainly adds up. This means the committee behind the Initiative is incredibly wealthy, but they are required to invest a majority of their earnings back towards the maintenance of the Vivarium.
