A Ghost Story for Christmas: A View from a Hill (BBC, 2005)
"Who's Baxter?"
"He was a watchmaker down in the village. Well before my time, of course. Fancied himself an archaeologist, like yourself."
"Well... I am an archaeologist. Actually, I'm a doctor."
"I'll have to get you to take a look at my feet."
#a ghost story for christmas#a view from a hill#bbc#horror tv#single play#m. r. james#luke watson#peter harness#2005#mark letheren#pip torrens#david burke#simon linnell#pier wilkie#harry escott#andy price#somehow my first ever viewing of this. when the ghost stories returned‚ some 27 years since the original strand wrapped up#at the end of the 70s‚ i was already a fan of Clark's films.. maybe tho i was too scared of New Horror to give this a go? i don't honestly#remember (and it is gulp nearly 20 years ago now). i dimly remember it being on tv but i didn't watch; there was another the following year#but then nothing much until Gatiss took over and started his run with The Tractate Middoth in 2013 (which i certainly did watch‚ it remains#a favourite of the newer plays). finally catching up to this and it's pretty good? not a stone cold classic‚ but a solid modern rendition#of a James tale. it does suffer just a little from the era in which it was made: like much early 2000s tv this was shot on standard def#video‚ a big step up from the video tapes of the 60s and 70s but inherently lacking the rich textures and hues of the og ghost stories#(thankfully shot on film) or even the polish and gloss of the Gatiss productions (presumably hd digital). it's not bad quality by any means#it just doesn't have that... lustre that adds so much to the visual ghost story. Letheren makes for a rather spiky and less genial Jamesian#protagonist than many‚ but he's good at selling the terror and the confusion in the latter half. always nice to have Burke pop up but#he is a little underused‚ or rather‚ his one big scene (relating a ghastly tale of old) is directed rather flatly and doesn't have the#impact it could or should have had. still‚ by no means a bad play‚ and a sincere treatment of the source

Mark’s Ghost Stories on DVD
Oooooh !
Tumblr media
Fan of Mark’s Ghost Stories ? Here’s something you’ll want. A DVD collecting all four “inspired by the short stories of M.R. James”. (The Dead Room stretches that a bit, but they’re saying the main character misses stories that use his rules.)
Also included are The Tractate Middoth, Martin’s Close, and The Mezzotint, as well as an 8-page booklet with Mark’s production notes.
Unfortunately, UK only at this point. Amazon.co.uk has a preorder available here.

Tractoth
Tumblr media
“The Tractate Middoth” © M. Grant Kellermeyer, accessed at Oldstyle Tales Press here
[I’ve been looking for an excuse to make another monster based on the ghost stories of MR James, and the current block of literary themed monsters was perfect. “The Tractate Middoth” is in some ways very conventional a ghost story by MR James standards; it involves a ghost coming back to resolve family business. But the cobweb-shrouded corpse of Vicar Rant is an especially ghoulish image, and as is usual for James it is much more tactile and solid than a mere ghost.]
Tractoth CR 5 LE Undead This humanoid figure moves in eerie silence. It appears clearly dead, with its skin drawn tight over its bones, and cobwebs covering its empty eye sockets and coating its body. Tiny spiders skitter along its frame.
A tractoth is an undead creature created when an evil humanoid dies leaving a disputed will. It exists to enforce the conditions of the will, with lethal force if necessary. Unlike many other undead which are created immediately after death, a tractoth may emerge years or decades after the death as conditions of the will come to light or revised versions are either discovered or forged. It is believed that tractoths exist at the whim of Hell, as Asmodeus and the other archdevils greatly enjoy seeing legal documents backed up with suffering.
In combat, a tractoth focuses its ire primarily on whoever would stand in the way of its legal wishes. They rely on their fearsome gaze to incapacitate anyone who would stand in their way, and then go for the face and throat of their chosen victim. Anyone who touches a tractoth with their bare hands falls prey to the spiders that crawl along and inside them—these creatures are magical projections rather than real vermin, but have venomous bites all the same. A tractoth can collapse its body into a mass of amorphous webbing in order to squeeze through narrow openings or escape via the air. Despite their deadly powers, tractoths are quite flammable.
Most tractoths exist on a specific mission—reveal a true will, destroy a false will, kill a disinherited family member. Some, however, lurk around for an extended period of time as sort of a dangerous security clause, and these are the tractoths most likely to keep a lair. They feel an affinity for spiders, both monstrous and mundane, perhaps as a metaphor for the careful weaving of legalese. The spiders for their part ignore the tractoth, and act as an extra layer of security. A tractoth’s treasure often includes a copy of their true will along with keepsakes of their mortal life and the remains of their victims, and so a tractoth may accomplish its ultimate goals even by being slain.

The save DC is Constitution based. Swarm Touch (Ex) Any creature making direct physical contact with a tractoth, such as with a touch attack, unarmed strike or natural weapon, takes 1d6 points of piercing damage and must save against the creature’s poison. A tractoth can make a touch attack as an attack action to deal this damage as well. Web Form (Su) As a move action, a tractoth can collapse into a mass of mobile spider webs. In this form it loses its land speed, but gains a fly speed of 20 ft. (perfect maneuverability) and the amorphous trait. It is treated as a Diminutive creature for the purposes of wind effects, and can move through openings as small as 1 inch wide without penalty. It has a Strength score of 1 in this form and cannot make slam attacks, but can still use its swarm touch. A tractoth can resume its normal form as a move action. Web Walker (Su) A tractoth ignores any hindrance to its movement from webs, either mundane or magical.
