Can we talk about how we definitely don’t give the Magnus Chase books enough credit? Like these books are such a beautiful depiction of coming to terms with grief and finding purpose in new relationships. Magnus’ struggle to accept his mother’s death and his guilt over it culminating in a beautiful moment where he feels her love and presence with and for him in his battle with Surt. The horrific despair he feels whenever someone around him is hurt, literally moving him to tears every time, even when it’s Gunilla, someone who has been actively hunting him. The line about how they are all empty cups, but that they can share each other’s burdens instead of filling themselves with pain. Just the beautiful bonds these characters who have each been isolated in their own way have formed with each other. How each of these characters have every right to be bitter and spiteful as a result of the tragedy in their lives, but choose love and each other at every turn.

Book summaries below:
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (The Sword of Summer, The Hammer of Thor, The Ship of the Dead) by Rick Riordan
Magnus Chase has seen his share of trouble. Ever since that terrible night two years ago when his mother told him to run, he has lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, staying one step ahead of the police and the truant officers. One day, Magnus learns that someone else is trying to track him down—his uncle Randolph, a man his mother had always warned him about. When Magnus tries to outmaneuver his uncle, he falls right into his clutches. Randolph starts rambling about Norse history and Magnus's birthright: a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years. The more Randolph talks, the more puzzle pieces fall into place. Stories about the gods of Asgard, wolves, and Doomsday bubble up from Magnus's memory. But he doesn't have time to consider it all before a fire giant attacks the city, forcing him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents. . . . Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die. Fantasy, middle grade, young adult, mythology, adventure, urban fantasy
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley
1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later, the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something. When Grace Carrow, an Oxford physicist, unwittingly interferes, Thaniel is torn between opposing loyalties. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is a sweeping, atmospheric narrative that takes the reader on an unexpected journey through Victorian London, Japan as its civil war crumbles long-standing traditions, and beyond. Blending historical events with dazzling flights of fancy, it opens doors to a strange and magical past. Fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, science fiction, adult

I'm a young, gay, nerdy person into mythology so I am obviously target demographic for Rick Riordan books, but I gotta say my favorite depiction of any goddess by his is Hel, in the first Magnus Chase book. I find the ways he adapts and changes gods to fit some modern stereotype funny, but I love how Riordan doesn't do that for Hel. He basically just boils her down to a really interesting interpretation of what she's all about: nihilism. She shows up in front of Magnus, says some depressing fun facts, insinuates that all life is pointless and bleak, and then disappears. And Magnus is genuinely freaked out by her. She's I think one of the few figures he doesn't really quip at or defeat. She poses no direct threat to him, but she still genuinely terrifies him with her mere presence, because she represents the unfightable and unhidable truth of life's painful and gloryless end. She even has the line towards him "I expected more bravado" She's so creepy and poetic and not a villain who tries too hard and I love it.

“I hate this guy,” I said. “How do you know it’s a guy?” Jack asked. The sword had a point. (Sorry, I keep stumbling into that pun.)
i just had to upload this because....reasons.

Just finished the first bookof Magnus chase and here are my thoughts:
Hearth and Blitz are definitely dating
Magnus is a sarcastic king
Sam is a queen
Hearth is the best character ever
Gunilla is mommy
Loki is cool (but he's also probs gonna be the main villain)
Thor is somehow the most relatable character
'Satan's fashion consultant' is the best description ever
Magnus is very pan. He describes everyone he sees as either (blank) handsome or (blank) pretty and that's hilarious to me
Hearthstone deserves the world omg omg omg
Magnus trying to be supportive and being like 'arranged marriages are bad' but Sam being like 'no I actually want this you idiot' is also funny
Loki doesn't deserve to be the main villain he's to BBG
And those are my thoughts :)
