Just What Do McCarthy’s Antagonists Want, and Why Won’t They Budge?
Tumblr media
While the Republicans' controversy regarding Representative Kevin McCarthy's attempt to be House speaker continues rounds after rounds of talks and roll-calls One question that is puzzling is exactly what the rebels are looking for. To the endless annoyance to McCarthy and his associates The demands of the insurgents have been heavily based on two fronts Internal procedural rules that are intended to strengthen the influence of the extreme right inside the House and the desire of the insurgents to portray themselves as uncompromising opponents of Democrats and their agenda. More than everything else, McCarthy's most hard-core opponents seem to be intent on bringing him down. "It's not about policies, it's about the fight," said Doug Heye, a former advisor for the House of Representatives Eric Cantor, the onetime majority leader who was ousted in a dramatic 2014 defeat by a far-right rival, David Brat. "The more you hear the word 'fight' or 'fighter,' the less you hear about a strategy for winning that fight." The longer the battle over who will be the speaker has gone on as his supporters are expressing displeasure about the situation. Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas said that the supporters of using "stupid platitudes that some consultant told you to say on the campaign trail." Representative Don Bacon, who holds the seat of a swing in Nebraska is calling the group "the chaos caucus" and the "Taliban 20." The use of such a scathing language isn't something new Rep. John Boehner, who was exiled from the speakership last year by the conservative Freedom Caucus, later lashed against one of the Freedom Caucus' co-founders Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, calling him an "political terrorist" and a "jerk." (Jordan is now a supporter of McCarthy and is expected to lead the strong Judiciary Committee if and when the speaker's dispute is settled.) The grass-roots are the fuel for HTML0 right One of the peculiarities of this speaker vote has been watching McCarthy's team try to marshal the conservative-industrial media complex, which helped power the rise of political outsiders like Donald Trump and has steadily weakened the ability of party leaders to keep backbenchers in line. "We'll see what happens when Tucker and Sean Hannity and Ben Shapiro start beating up on those guys," Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania wistfully spoke to the reporters on the Capitol this week. "Maybe that'll move it." However, Tucker Carlson did not beat the guys down but instead described the debate over the speakership in the form of "pretty refreshing." Nor is it obvious how Fox News can command the only loyalties to the left. For instance it was in this year's Republican race for Senate this year in Pennsylvania, the conservative blogosphere and podcasts contributed to the sudden popularity of Kathy Barnette, a little-known conservative journalist who was able throw an insanity at the last minute to Trump and Hannity's choice for the choice for the nomination, Mehmet Oz. "Is this a game show?" A annoyed Hannity confronted on one of the House members who aren't in the House Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, on his Fox News show on Wednesday evening. She didn't back down. Chris Stirewalt, a former editor at Fox News Chris Stirewalt, a former editor at Fox News, stated the "what happens online, on talk radio and on Fox prime time has been and will continue to be the harbinger of what House Republicans will do." He said that representatives and the congressional aides that he was talking to were "all talking about how their positions were playing with the different hosts and sites." F.A.Q. : The Speakership Deadlock in the House Card 1 of 7 A major impasse. Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California is seeking to be House Speaker However, a group of hard-right Republicans opposes his candidacy and is preventing the opening of the next Congress. Here's what you need to know about the drama unfolding in the House floor: What is the reason for the impasse? With Republicans having a slim advantage in the House (222 seats against Democrats' 212 seats McCarthy. McCarthy needs support from his right-wing party members in order to become the Speaker. Some lawmakers from the extreme right are refusing to vote for the speaker, and have prevented him from achieving his goal of. McCarthy from getting to 218 votes. Who are the people who are the detractors? Twenty House Republicans who have voted against McCarthy. McCarthy include some of the most hard-right lawmakers in the chamber. The majority of them deny the outcome of the presidential election in 2020 and a majority are part of the extreme conservative Freedom Caucus. What are they looking for? The right-wing protest to oppose the McCarthy administration. McCarthy is rooted not only in personal animosity, but also in an ideological motivation. The defenders of the right want to significantly reduce the size, scope and scope of federal authorities and also overhaul the method by which Congress operates in order to make it easier for them to achieve this. What is it that McCarthy do? Mr. McCarthy has made a number of concessions to try and get the hard-liner voters to agree by embracing measures that weaken the speakership , and which previously he was unwilling to back. However, so far, the concessions haven't proved enough to win the support the speaker needs. Does anyone have a viable alternative to McCarthy? One of the major factors that is in McCarthy's favor is that. McCarthy's favor the fact that no viable candidate has come up to challenge him, however Republicans might unite around a new candidate. Steve Scalise, the No. two Republican of the House is viewed in the eyes of many to be the obvious candidate to succeed him. What is the solution? House tradition dictates that members continue to cast every vote until someone has the majority needed to win. In the meantime, until a speaker is selected then the House is basically a non-existent body. It is unable to pass laws, or even swear on its members. As of now, the main Fox hosts have stayed to McCarthy. However "there could be a land rush," Stirewalt suggested when asked if "certain hosts or outlets are seen to be benefiting by being more extreme." These kinds of incentives can have a negative impact on Republican leaders' standard tools for maintaining discipline. The majority of Committee assignments offer a routine of drudgery and apathy, especially if your political stance is focused on blocking government actions. Many of the most vocal conservative lawmakers are now finding it appealing to be instant celebrity, and are able to be able to afford to escheat McCarthy's promises of congressional perks as well as the K Street-connected money source as well as tap into the anger of the grass-roots Republican supporters instead. Remember Madison Cawthorn? Prior to his demise and his subsequent demise, Cawthorn was a North Carolina congressman rocketed onto the national scene of politics through his rants about red meat and piling the most hits on Trump-friendly news outlets. Time magazine announced on 2021 that Cawthorn had told colleaguesthat "I have built my staff around comms rather than legislation." Boehner had described the election cycle by saying "getting elected, make a lot of noise, draw a lot of attention to yourself, raise a lot of money, which means you're going to go make more noise, raise more money." This week was the week that an agreement to avoid a nonaggression was signed by two groups: the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC closely associated with McCarthy that has spent over $200 million in order to vote Republicans into House positions this year as well as the Club for Growth, a conservative group of outsiders that specialize in attempting to oust incumbents who are thought to be too soft. The agreement was an equally clear statement of the fact that the true power is in the Republican Party: outside its formal structures. "I wasn't sure what it meant to be conservative' The New York Times review of the 20 lawmakers who consistently opposed McCarthy discovered that 12 had rejected the outcome of the election in 2020 and 19 of them were associated with The Freedom Caucus; and 17 were supported by Trump in the midterms of last year. The majority of rebels come from the districts of deep red. But not all of them. Rep.-elect Josh Brecheen, who was elected in Oklahoma and won the race by 49 percent. Three other candidates won by at least 40points, four of them were able to win with a margin of 30 or more and three of them carried their districts with margins of 20 or more. Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona ran without opposition. But that's not enough to explain the actions of a person like Boebert who fought an astonishingly vigorous campaign with about 500 votes. Three other candidates were also successful -three of them -- Eli Crane, Anna Paulina Luna and Scott Perry -- won their races with just eight points. As with all other traits What defines the rebels is the power of personality driven politics. For these bomb-throwers winning accolades from the alternative conservative news environment is what matters. "A lot of these people get into Congress and they get drunk on the red light of the camera," said Alice Stewart, a Republican consultant in communications. "Conservative media stars need to recognize our opposition is Biden and the Democrats, not our fellow Republicans," she said. Paulina Luna, a recently appointed Air Force veteran and Instagram influencer with more than 500,000 followers previously admitted to her radio show, "I know this sounds weird, but I didn't know what conservative was." Matt Gaetz, the Florida congressman who has transformed the opposition of McCarthy to a reality TV show He clearly enjoys the spotlight. The intro montage for Gaetz's podcast "Firebrand," contains clips from Tucker Carlson, the Fox News host, who praises him for being "one of the very few members in Congress who bothered to stand up against permanent Washington" and of Trump declaring: "Ever watch this guy on TV? He's like the machine." On Wednesday on Wednesday, as McCarthy was trying to negotiate new deals that could convince his adversaries Gaetz made a fundraising appeal. The text message stated that the speaker had been "leading the fight to elect a true conservative" as speaker. "I'm fighting for you," it continued, "and I need you to have my back like never before." Then, on Thursday just a few minutes from when Steve Bannon proposed Trump as an undisputed presidential candidate in his show, Gaetz exuberantly revealed his choice for speaker on the House on the floor. Donald John Trump. What to look for in a book - The South Carolina's Supreme Court ruled that the State Constitution provides a right to privacy, which includes the right of abortion, Kate Zernike reports. - Senator Debbie Stabenow, the senior Democratic senator from Michigan has announced that she will not be seeking the fifth term this year, creating an opportunity in the state that is a battleground which will give her political party a second seat to defend in a difficult 2024 electoral map for Democrats. Carl Hulse has the details. - and Senate President Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, who is running for an election in the swing state in 2018 He announced that he has prostate cancer, but was expected to fully recover, Neil Vigdor writes. - President Biden will unveil new plans that will allow up to 30,000 people who are from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti to legally come into within the U.S. each month, as well as securing refugees crossing the border into Mexico, Michael Shear reports. You can buy a copy of this issue for your very own at my eBay store: https://www.ebay.com/str/bradentonbooks
Cover Story: Hollywood’s Best and Worst Bosses
Tumblr media
Page 1: Shia LaBeouf currently accused of relentless abuse and sexual battery by his ex FKA Twigs was snapped making out with Margaret Qualley after she arrived at LAX for a solid 10 minutes and holding up traffic -- the PDA session was the first time Shia and Margaret who is the daughter of Andie MacDowell were spotted out in public together but the two got well-acquainted a few months ago rolling around naked for a NSFW music video for a song by the actress’ sister Rainey Qualley a.k.a. Rainsford -- Shia went out of his way to charm Margaret as soon as they met and he wooed her with compliments and gifts and flowers and texts and spur-of-the-moment dates where he’d just show up at her house but her friends are concerned because Twigs’ lawsuit against Shia alleges multiple incidents of abuse including choking her in her sleep and knowingly giving her a sexually transmitted disease -- Shia said many of those allegations are not true and he is in a 12-step program and therapy for PTSD and alcoholism
Page 2: Contents, Prince William and Duchess Kate with kids Prince George and Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for a Christmas card

Page 3: Candice Swanepoel in a bathing suit in Miami, Jennifer Garner stepped out to run errands in a mask and an expressive sweater in L.A., Ryan Reynolds cuddled up with a puppy to encourage his Instagram followers to donate to the SickKids Foundation
Page 4: Friends of Johnny Depp are keeping their distance as he gears up for another ugly defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard -- after losing the case against a U.K. newspaper that called him a wife beater and a scathing feature in The Hollywood Reporter that dubbed the star radioactive and his career all but dead, former pals want nothing to do with him -- the likes of Jude Law, Leonardo DiCaprio and Channing Tatum have been backpeddling on Johnny and it’s making him furious but to be fair Johnny had already alienated Leo and Channing by calling them Pumpkin Head and Potato Head and accusing them of having affairs with Amber -- Jude’s indifference cuts the deepest because for a time he and Johnny were brothers-in-arms as they filmed the second Fantastic Beasts movie and from Johnny’s perspective Jude hasn’t lifted a finger to defend him
Page 5: Mossimo Giannulli’s son is speaking out claiming the fashion designer is being treated harshly at California’s Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc and Gianni Giannulli took to social media to complain that because of the pandemic his dad has been locked in solitary confinement for one full month and is only let out every three days for a few moments to shower and Gianni, Mossimo’s son from an earlier relationship, is irate that his father is being mistreated and he feels sorry for his dad and doesn’t want to see him languishing in prison however his half sisters Bela and Olivia Jade don’t seem too bothered by it
* At age 74 Susan Sarandon has had it with men -- she said she hasn’t really had a large dating career and in fact hasn’t had a guy in five years and it’s not that she can’t get a man, it’s just that the men she attracts are losers or sub-par in some way -- she is happy hanging out in her NYC apartment but still friends can’t help trying to fix her up because she’s attractive and in phenomenal shape but the problem is she scares guys away; she’s a force they can’t handle
* Two years after sharing her shock diagnosis with multiple sclerosis Selma Blair is struggling with pain and fear -- she was recently spotted getting emotional outside a West Hollywood cannabis shop and she has turned to medical marijuana to soothe symptoms of the chronic immune-system disorder which can include fatigue, spasticity, walking issues, numbness, weakness, vision issues and pain -- on some days she can’t even get out of bed but she’s trying to stay strong for her son Arthur and smile more for him but it’s been hard
Page 6: Julianne Hough appears to be sweetness and light but she’s a heartbreaker according to her ex Chuck Wicks who split from Julianne in 2009 -- in a revealing podcast Chuck blasted Julianne saying they were both loving life then out of nowhere you find out that they are not the person you thought they were and you break up -- Chuck admitted that he and Julianne agreed to say their split was amicable but it wasn’t fine and it wasn’t his fault
* After holing up at his Oklahoma spread Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are having a blast decorating their 13,000-square-foot $13.2 million new home in the Encino area of California’s San Fernando Valley -- the home sits on 1.6 ultra-private acres behind double gates and extensive walls and features a pool and fabulous views -- inside the engaged pair give each other space: Gwen wants a dance studio and Blake gets his own man-cave with a big screen and high-tech surround sound
* Star Spots the Stars -- Nicky Hilton, Katharine McPhee Foster, Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt making dairy-free and plant-based holiday appetizers, Jenna Dewan, Natalia Dyer

Page 21: Kirsten Dunst, Halsey
Page 24: Ariana Grande announced her engagement to realtor Dalton Gomez with some celebratory shots and she’s telling everyone how she never thought it was possible to be this happy -- the couple began dating in early 2020 when Dalton helped Ariana find a home in L.A. and things hit the fast track amid the health pandemic which saw the two enjoying quality time together in lockdown and realizing they were a perfect fit because they never fight and are totally in sync about how they look at life -- Ariana went straight into wedding mode already deciding on an intimate outdoor setting in mid-2021
Page 25: Jon Hamm stepped out in L.A. recently with girlfriend Anna Osceola and she was showing off a noticeably rounder midsection and there’s a good chance the two are pregnant because they’ve been actively trying to get into the family way -- though Jon admitted in 2016 that having children isn’t necessarily an imperative Jon may have changed his tune after his year-long relationship with Anna and hitting the big 5-0 in March has him reassessing his life and now having a child has become important to him
* Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher will be camping in style now that they’ve purchased a $140K Mercedes Benz Sprinter and they’re preparing to embark on an adventure  -- with sleeping accommodations for four and a kitchen the spacious luxury vehicle is perfect for the couple and their two kids -- other stars can spend their vacations in five-star resorts but Mila and Ashton prefer to keep things alfresco and it’s a tradition they’ve kept all these years; this is their idea of a perfectly fun vacation
Page 26: Cover Story -- Hollywood’s Best and Worst Bosses -- who’s great to work for and who makes employees’ lives a misery -- Jennifer Hudson -- best

I, Substitute
by Don Hall
While temporarily hanging my hat in Kansas and helping my mom take care of my dad, I needed some kind of impetus to get me out of their house and perhaps make a few bucks to boot. I have an ancient teaching degree from back when they etched the degrees on slate so I thought “Hey! Let’s squeeze a bit more out of that now useless college expense and substitute teach here!”
Substitute teaching is a weird beast of a gig. You dress appropriately (in accordance to the standards of practice of the district), bring a water bottle, load up a few snacks, a laptop and your official badge. The badge serves as a way to alert other staff that you are legit and not necessarily a child predator roaming the halls and as a magnetic swipe card for either the outside doors, the sign in process, or both.
The office assigns you a room or series of rooms. You wander around the building for about ten minutes trying to find the first room, maybe ask another staff member for directions with some sort of small talk version of “I’m a fucking idiot but I’m all you got!” You find your room and survey where you can hang your jacket, put your water bottle, look for the lesson plans for the day, and marvel in horror at the role sheet filled with unpronounceable names that you will surely mangle at the emotional peril of the underdeveloped, doughy recipients of your stumbling inability to read names from Poland to Mexico to Dubai.
The bar for performance is remarkably low. The job description should read “Must be able to hand out papers, sit bored out of your skull, make sure the lunatics don’t take over the asylum with no authority, no hope for respect from the inmates, and no real idea if they are lying to you when they tell you that their regular class work involves smartphones and flaming hot covered salt lick snacks.”
I immediately recognize that, as opposed to the hardened criminal class of Chicago’s freshman students, these Kansas kids are more dully laconic and don’t even bother to take a beat to notice me or make eye contact. No intent to rebel, these folks are like people sitting on the train hoping you don’t sit down next to them and if they pretend to be on the phone you won’t try to speak. Imagine a blind date with thirty women who see you at the door and knew instantly this was not the date they hoped for.
I’m a sucker for a challenge so I wade in. The class for this maiden voyage is a Film Appreciation class (the drama teacher has quit the job a few weeks prior because of a poorly executed active shooter situation that left him to restart therapy and ultimately decide this was not working for him) so I leap right in with questions about what movies they like. Christ, I love movies and even have a movie podcast so I’m certain I can engage this room of stinky zombies.
Kung Fu Panda.
Among the students willing to hold their cement-filled heads above neckline, it seems the only movie any of them can remember seeing is Kung Fu-fucking-Panda.
We talk about why they like it, what other movies they might say is in the same genre, and then the eureka moment. An overly tall white kid with long, unkempt hair and glasses looks up and asks “What do you think of A Clockwork Orange?”
“The 1971 film based on the Anthony Burgess novel? Droogies? Alec and ‘Singing in the Rain’?”
I nail that one. We are off. He and I start a mini-discussion of the themes of the film and how the experiment of forcing a kid to watch the horrors of the world on repeat to pacify him has been effectively performed on his contemporaries as they are flooded with images on their smartphones twenty-four hours a day and was the experiment from the film successful? The groupmind of the numb, Cheeto-infused monkeys notices one of their own being taken seriously by the monster adult and they start to wake up.
“Did you like Titanic?” “Which is better—Get Out or Nope?” “Have you seen Akira?”
The ninety-minute class flies by. By the time the bell rings, half the kids are still asking me questions and act almost as if they are fully functioning humans. Then I’m off to Room A313. The Special Education class. Six hours of two and three kids at a time with worksheets and dicking around and boredom. The wifi in the school is shit due to a billion smartphones sucking the juice for Tik Tok so I can barely access even Apple News. I’m exhausted by the end of the day but not the good kind of worn out. The exhaustion of the static.
The secretary in the office asks me if I can come back the next day and the day after that. This is the substitute teacher sweet spot. It isn’t difficult to get work but the perks of being known by the staff and students come with repeat visits. I’m in.
The next day, the secretary puts me in the drama room for the full day. She tells me the word is out, that the kids in the film class had spread the word that I was cool and interesting (an anomaly in the ranks of substitute teachers).
The first group is the Advanced Rep gang. These are the bona fide theater geeks. They have a project that stinks of busy work (pick a monologue and analyze it for theme and structure). No performance of the monologue. No grade because they don’t have a real teacher. So we talk about writing their own monologues. Where to find the material. War stories from my days in Chicago theater. The time flies by.
The second class is StageCraft. Also students interested in the work. More busy work so instead, I give them stagecraft challenges I encountered in the many years in Chicago. Actual challenges we encountered and let them work in groups to solve the issues. They were way into it.
Third class is Intro to Theater. Definitely not theater geeks. Freshman shoved into a class that was like English but wasn’t. We talk about stories and storytelling and then I give them half the time to fuck around.
Lunch Duty. Then another Intro to Theater group. Then Hall Monitoring. Then home. I’m so tired from being actually engaged for most of the day I grab a beer and practically pass out on the couch. This is the good kind of pooped. The type of exhaustion that comes at the end of a productive feeling. I’m finding my stride.
The third day, I’m on my game. All the things I remembered from being a teacher in Chicago, the decade when I had my own classroom and own rules, came back in force. I discard the work sheets and we have active discussions about theater, art, music, writing and the perils involved in doing anything truly creative in a society that rewards mediocrity and conformism over originality. In every class at least one student asks me if I’ll be their permanent drama teacher. I’m new and I’m different. I’m not from ‘round these parts and the New Age Hippie teacher I was in the 1990’s fascinates these idiots. I have a ball. After being lied to and discarded by my soulmate I start to regain the idea that I am worth something, that I do bring some value to the world.
The thing I remind myself is that I'm not looking to get back into teaching children again. I did it in the 90's, was damn good at it, wrote a book about it, and now have other things to do. That said, being a good substitute teacher is sort of like being a really good pick up basketball player in a back lot court. No one expects you to make the shots but you can and do. Fun. Innocuous. Temporary.
This week I'll swing out to a few different high schools and see what Wichita looks like from different angles. Funny, though. The movies made about teachers are legendary. As far as I know there are only a handful about substitute teachers and they aren't heartwarming, inspirational fare.

In addition to being on some of the Fantha Tracks Podcasts, Mark Mulcaster wears a few other hats, including his duties as  Commander of the UK Rebel Legion’s Elstree Base as well as being in the 501st UK Garrison and the UK Vok Chi clan of the Mando Mercs. He’s also an avid Bass player who may or may not show up at a gig with a Star Wars T-shirt. Mark was incredibly generous to give up some of his time and give a great overview of how these cosplay groups among other things, work with folks to get their outfits in shape, his collection and his role on Making Tracks, co-hosting with friend of the show Mark Newbold who has been on the show a few times and I think snuck him into the Celebration one here a few months back.
His Bio from Fantha Tracks:
‘Mark has been a fan of the saga since the early 1990s after rediscovering the original trilogy on VHS and dived right into the first Grand Admiral Thrawn Trilogy, he has been an avid Star Wars reader ever since. Tuesday Brewsday 29: Urza’s Army in a Can
Every now and then while playing games of pauper you’ll come across a very special mono white deck. This deck isn’t your typical run of the mill white weenie deck. Oh no, this deck runs on the raw tapped power of Urza’s real estate. I’m talking about Rebels! Now, if you’ve still never heard of this deck or come across it before, allow me to introduce you. Rebels is a creature type that first debuted in Mercadian Masques. Winning a flavor home run, these Rebels have a way of recruiting more rebels for their cause. This is represented well by a mechanic that allows you you pay generic mana and tap certain rebels, so that you can tutor up another rebel and put it directly onto the battlefield. Tron is by far and away the best mana producing deck, so what better land base to abuse for your Rebels. I wanted to know what would happen if I went even harder on the tutoring mechanic and played creatures that drew more of the same creatures, but also could spit out a bunch of tokens. Before I get a head of myself, let me show you the decklist.
Mainboard:
3 Ramosian Sergeant
4 Ramosian Lieutenant
4 Defiant Falcon
3 Aven Riftwatcher
4 Bound in Silence
3 Renegade Map
4 Squadron Hawk
3 Self-Assembler
2 Battle Screech
2 Dauntless Unity
3 Prismatic Strands
1 Recruit the Worthy
2 Oblivion Ring
4 Urza's Mine
4 Urza's Power Plant
4 Urza's Tower
9 Plains
Sideboard:
2 Standard Bearer
1 Coalition Honor Guard
2 Circle of Protection: Green
2 Circle of Protection: Red
3 Rhystic Circle
3 Lumithread Field
2 Nightwing Glider
Starting with Ramosian Sergeant as our one drop rebel, with three generic mana you can tutor up a two mana costed Rebel and put it directly into play. This means you can search your library for either Ramosian Lieutenant or Defiant Falcon. I’d say if you’re facing anything either black or red, your safest bet is going to be the Lieutenant so you can dodge electrickery or Suffocating Fumes. Both Ramosian Lieutenant and Defiant Falcon can do something really special for their tutor target though. With four generic mana you can tutor up Bound in Silence and put it directly onto the battlefield on to an opposing creature. The key thing to take away from this interaction is that you’re not actually targeting the creature, so you can get around Hexproof. Using either the Lieutenant or the Falcon, you can also tutor up Aven Riftwatcher if you need some life support or a threat in the air.
Why the unusual Renegade Map? Initially when I was designing the deck I had Expedition Map here as my preferred map of choice. It’s banning, however, made me think of alternative solutions. Renegade Map can’t grab you that missing Tron piece, but it still does a good job of thinning your deck and allowing you to cast more white spells by providing plains.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love Squadron Hawk! This pesky two drop can grab up to three of its friends from your library and put them into your hand. A 1/1 flyer that draws a card? Yes please! Self Assembler makes an attempt at being as good as Squadron Hawk by being a 4/4, but the lack of flying is what really holds these Assembly-Workers back. They do exactly what we want to though, which is to grab more creatures to flood the board or keep and endless supply of creatures coming in the face of heavy removal.
I think any predominantly white “go wide” decks that can support a mid ranged mana curve should play Battle Screech. This card is absolutely amazing. One of my favorite things about this card is it can still net you immediate value if your opponent counters the first half. There aren’t vary many pauper cards that can claim to do that.
Alright, so we have a bunch of creatures that can go grab other creatures, but what are we going to do with that abundance of creatures? Well, that’s where Dauntless Unity Comes in. For one white mana and a generic, it gives all your creatures +1/+1 until the end of turn which you can use aggressively or to save your team. Here’s the kicker, actually quite literally the kicker, for an additional one white mana and a generic, it will give your creatures +2/+1 instead. There are other options I could have run, like Borrowed Grace or Guardians Pledge, but I felt like Dauntless Unity seemed like the best fit.
Prismatic Strands is such a good card. Sure it can prevent all damage from a single color till the end of turn and be used again via the notorious flashback mechanic, but have you ever used it as a surprise board wipe before? Aww man I’ve had some great moments with Prismatic Strands when I’ve played it in Boros Bully. While we don’t really have a way to discard it via looting in this deck, you could always discard it to hand size after casting Squadron Hawk or Self-Assembler and filling your entire hand beyond 7 cards. It’s actually a really good play if you’re expecting Fiery Cannonade or Electrickery.
Recruit the Worthy is an interesting card because it has buyback. This means you can cast this spell for one white mana and you can pay an additional 3 generic mana to put it back into your hand instead of the graveyard like normal. It’s an instant too so you can wait till your opponent’s end step to cast this as many times as your Tron mana can allow it. In no time you’ll have flood the board with tons of 1/1s.
Since the deck is already running Bound In Silence, I thought it would be prudent to be a bit more versatile in my removal options when it came to my last two cards for the main deck. Oblivion Ring is the perfect answer since it can deal with any non-land permanent in play. So long as Oblivion Ring sticks around that is. Having a versatile removal option in the mainboard has truly been a blessing.
If you look at the sideboard you’ll notice I’m relying heavily on the color hate. I mean, we might as well since we’re a Tron deck with an abundance of mana! One of my favorites to utilize is Rhystic Circle. This Enchantment can shut down the opposition if they rely on damage to win the game. Meanwhile, you can keep amassing a strong force of your own to overwhelm your opponent.
Crack open a nice cold can of Urza’s Army and enjoy the refreshing taste of victory. Savor the salt collected from your opponent’s tears. Remember, Urza’s Army In a Can, your endless supply of fizzy creatures. I do hope you have enjoyed these blogs/articles. I’m always open to feedback and simply want to provide the best content I can. I’m always open to collaborate on a deck as well. Please visit and like/follow me at http://facebook.com/pauperpedia a fan page dedicated to bringing you links to daily articles, videos, and podcast from other content creators covering Pauper. The 60 Best Free SEO Tools [100% Free]
Tumblr media
Here at Moz, we understand the value of top-end SEO tools — we've designed and built best-in-class search tools for close to 15 years. Premium tools are hugely valuable in SEO when you need higher limits, advanced functionality, stored data, or on-call support. But for 75 percent of other tasks, a free tool often does the trick. There are literally hundreds of free SEO tools out there, so we want to focus on only the best and most useful to add to your toolbox. Tons of people in the SEO community helped vet the SEO software in this post (see the note at the end). To be included, a tool had to meet three requirements. It must be: Widely used by the SEO community Offers above-board value + actionable data Actually, truly free The tools are categorized by SEO function. Click on a button below to jump to that specific section. Categories: Analytics   Crawling/Indexing   Keyword Research   Link Tools   Local SEO   Mobile SEO   Multi-tool   On-page SEO   Research   Site Speed   Wordpress

Get it: Enhanced Google Analytics Annotations Alternatives: Panguin Tool, Zeo Tools 4. Google Analytics

The big kahuna, and the most widely-used web analytics package on earth. Some folks have privacy concerns with GA — though Google swears they don't use this data for search rankings. Get it: Google Analytics Alternatives: Clicky, Open Web Analytics 5. Search Console

A free Chrome extension, lots of SEOs recommend Link Redirect Trace as the "all-in-one redirect path analyzer." Get it: Link Redirect Trace 10. Redirect Path

Similar to Link Redirect Trace, Redirect Path is a nifty tool from the good folks at Ayima that shows redirect paths and header information for every URL you visit. Gotta admit, I've used this extension for years and it's almost "always on" in my browser. Get it: Redirect Path 11. Screaming Frog
Tumblr media
Aside from having one of the best Twitter accounts of any SEO tool maker, Screaming Frog is the most popular desktop-based crawler available today. While not as fully functional as the paid version, it's great for small projects and smaller site audits. Get it: Screaming Frog 12. Screaming Frog Log File Analyzer

Tumblr media
Gotta be honest, although Xenu has been on every "free SEO tool" list since the dawn of, no way did I think it would make this one. This Windows-based desktop crawler has been virtually unchanged over the past 10 years. That said, a lot of folks still love and use it for basic site auditing, looking for broken links, etc. Heck, I'm leaving here for sentimental reasons. Check it out. Get it: Xenu Keyword Research Tools to discover what people are searching for, along with volume and competition. 15. Answer The Public

Keyword Planner
Tumblr media
Google's own Keyword Planner was built for folks who buy Google ads, but it still delivers a ton of information useful for SEO keyword planning. Get it: Keyword Planner 18. Keyword Sh****r
Tumblr media
Yes, it's called Keyword Sh****r. It pains me to write this. That said, it says what it does and does what it says. Type in a keyword and it, um, poops out a poop-ton of keywords. Get it: Keyword Sh****r 19. Keywords Everywhere

An SEO favorite! Install this browser extension for Firefox or Chrome, and see keyword suggestions with volume as you cruise the internet. Works in Google Search Console as well. This one is a must-have for keyword inspiration. Get it: Keywords Everywhere 20. Ubersuggest
Tumblr media
Sometimes I make fun of Neil Patel because he does SEO in his pajamas. I'm probably jealous because I don't even own pajamas. Regardless, Neil took over Ubersuggest not long ago and gave it a major overall. If you haven't tried it in a while, it now goes way beyond keyword suggestions and offers a lot of extended SEO capabilities such as basic link metrics and top competitor pages. Get it: Ubersuggest Link Tools Tools to find, evaluate, and process backlink opportunities. 21. Disavow Tool
Tumblr media
Google makes the Disavow Tool hard to find because most site owners usually don't need to use it. The 55 Best Free SEO Tools For Every Task - Moz
Tumblr media
At Moz, we know the value of premium SEO tools — we've built new tools for 10+ years. Paid tools are hugely valuable in SEO when you need advanced features, increased limits, stored data, or online support.
But for 70 percent of other tasks, a free tool often does the trick. There are literally hundreds of free SEO tools out there, so we want to focus on only the best and most useful to add to your toolbox. Tons of people in the SEO community helped vet the SEO software in this post (see the note at the end). To be included, a tool had to meet three requirements. It must be:
The tools are categorized by SEO function. Click on a button below to jump to that specific section.
The best tools to analyze search performance, monitor SERPs, keywords, and competitor analysis:
1. Bing Webmaster Tools
While Google Webmaster Tools gets all the glory, folks forget that Bing Webmaster offers a full suite of website and search analytics. Especially useful are keyword reports, keyword research, and crawling data.
Get it: Bing Webmaster Also useful: Yandex.Webmaster
2. Data Studio
If you need to merge data from different sources (say Search Console and Google Analytics), visualize, and share it - this is Google Data Studio's comfort zone. For an idea of all the SEO tasks and dashboards that you can build for free, check out these Google Data Studio Resources from Lee Hurst.
Get it: Data Studio
3. Enhanced Google Analytics Annotations
How do you know if your dip in traffic (or rise) is associated with a Google Algorithm update, or perhaps a major holiday? This is a highly-recommended Google Chrome plugin that overlays additional data on top of your analytics, so you can easily send screenshots to clients showing exactly how outside forces impacted traffic.
4. Google Analytics
The big kahuna, and the most widely-used web analytics package on earth. For being free, Google Analytics is surprisingly robust and plays well with other Google products, including Optimize, Search Console, and Data Studio. Some folks have privacy concerns with GA — though Google swears they don't use this data for search rankings.
5. Search Console
Probably the most useful free SEO tool on this entire list, it's hard to imagine doing modern SEO without access to the data inside Google's Search Console. This is the most reliable location for information on how Google crawls and ranks your site, and is one of the only places where you can get reliable keyword data.
Get it: Search Console
6. Keyword Hero
Did somebody say (not provided)? Keyword Hero works to solve the problem of missing keyword data with lots of advanced math and machine learning. It's not a perfect system, but for those struggling to match keywords with conversion and other on-site metrics, the data can be a valuable step in the right direction. Pricing is free up to 2000 sessions/month.
Get it: Keyword Hero
7. MozCast
The brainchild of Dr. Pete and the original Google SERP tracker, MozCast is the go-to algorithm tracker whenever there's a big update, or not. Also useful are the SERP tracking features showing the prominence of such features as ads and knowledge panels.
Crawling/Indexing
Specific tools to make sure your site is crawlable and optimized.
8. Beam Us Up
If you need a free, desktop crawler, you can't do better than Beam Us Up. While it doesn't have as many features as Screaming Frog, it does offer 100 percent free crawling with no limits. Windows only.
9. Link Redirect Trace
A free Chrome extension, lots of SEOs recommend Link Redirect Trace as the "all-in-one redirect path analyzer." The extension reveals information about HTTP headers, rel-canonicals, robots.txt, and basic link metrics from LinkResearchTools. The "Save Screenshot" feature is super useful too.
10. Redirect Path
Similar to Link Redirect Trace, Redirect Path is a nifty tool from the good folks at Ayima that shows redirect paths and header information for every URL you visit. Gotta admit, I've used this extension for years and it's almost "always on" in my browser.
Get it: Redirect Path
11. Screaming Frog
Aside from having one of the best Twitter accounts of any SEO tool maker, Screaming Frog is the most popular desktop-based crawler available today. Many people don't realize that there's a free version that allows for up to 500 URLs per crawl. While not as fully functional as the paid version, it's great for small projects and smaller site audits.
Get it: Screaming Frog
12. Screaming Frog Log File Analyzer
Most folks in the SEO space are familiar with Screaming Frog, but many don't realize that the Frog also offers a standalone free/paid Log File Analyzer tool. The free version is very robust, though limited to 1000 lines.
13. SEOlyzer
SEOlyzer is a log analysis tool recommended by Aleyda Solis in her very excellent SEO podcast Crawling Mondays. SEOlyzer is a terrific log analysis tool with some cool features like real-time analysis and page categorization.
Get it: SEOlyzer
14. Xenu
Get it: Xenu
Keyword Research
15. Answer The Public
It's hard not to love Answer The Public. The interface has an almost "Cards Against Humanity" rebel vibe to it. Regardless, if you want to generate a massive list of questions from any keyword set, this is your go-to tool.
16. Keyword Explorer
OMG. 500 million keyword suggestions, all the most accurate volume ranges in the industry. You also get Moz's famous Keyword Difficulty Score along with CTR data. Moz's free community account gives you access to 10 queries a month, with each query literally giving you up to 1000 keyword suggestions along with SERP analysis.
Get it: Keyword Explorer
17. Keyword Planner
Google's own Keyword Planner was built for folks who buy Google ads, but it still delivers a ton of information useful for SEO keyword planning. It uses Google's own data and has useful functions like country filtering. Be careful with metrics like competition (this is meant for paid placements) and volume — which is known to be confusing.
Get it: Keyword Planner
18. Keyword Shitter
Yes, it's called Keyword Shitter. It pains me to write this. That said, it says what it does and does what it says. Type in a keyword and it, um, poops out a poop-ton of keywords.
Get it: Keyword Shitter
19. Keywords Everywhere
An SEO favorite! Install this browser extension for Firefox or Chrome, and see keyword suggestions with volume as you cruise the internet. Works in Google Search Console as well. This one is a must-have for keyword inspiration.
Get it: Keywords Everywhere
20. Ubersuggest
Get it: Ubersuggest
Tools to find, evaluate, and process backlink opportunities.
21. Disavow Tool
Google makes the Disavow Tool hard to find because most site owners usually don't need to use it. But when you do, it can be useful for getting penalties removed and some SEOs swear by it for fighting off negative SEO. If you choose to use this tool, be careful and check with this guide on disavowing the right links.
Get it: Disavow Tool
Link Explorer is arguably the biggest, most accurate link index in the SEO world today, boasting 35 trillion links. The free account access gives you 10 queries and 50 rows of data per query every month, plus adds basic link metrics to the MozBar as you browse the web.
Get it: Link Explorer
23. Link Miner
Link Miner is a free Chrome extension developed by Jon Cooper, one of the masters of link building. Use it to quickly find broken links on each page, as well as see basic link metrics as you search Google. Simple, easy, and useful.
Get it: Link Miner
Free tools to optimize your on Google Maps and beyond.
24. Google My Business
Basically, this is the #1, must-have tool for Local SEO — especially if you live in a market served by Google. It allows you to claim your business, manage listing information, and respond to reviews — among other things. Claiming your business profile forms the foundation of most other local SEO activities, so it's an essential step.
25. Google Review Link Generator
The Google Review Link Generator by Whitespark solves a simple problem - how do you give your customers a URL to leave a Google review for your business? Reviews drive rankings, but Google doesn't easily provide this. This generator makes it easy.
26. Local Search Results Checker
One of the hardest parts of Local SEO is figuring out rankings from any location — especially when Google stubbornly wants to serve results from the location you're in. BrightLocal solves this with a quick local ranking tool that can virtually drop you into any location on earth to check actual local rankings.
27. Moz Local Check Business Listing
How consistent is your business information across the local search ecosystem? Moz Local lets you quickly check how your business shows up across the web in the major data aggregators that Google and others use to rank local search results. Very handy to understand your strengths and weaknesses.
Mobile SEO
Tools to optimize your website in Google's mobile-first world.
28. Mobile First Index Checker
Mobile versions of websites often differ significantly from their desktop versions. Because Google has switched to mobile-first indexing, it's important that major elements (links, structured data, etc.) match on both versions. A number of tools will check this for you, but Zeo's is probably the most complete.
29. Mobile SERP Test
It's amazing how mobile search results can vary by both location AND device. MobileMoxie's mobile SERP test lets you compare devices side-by-side for any location, down to specific addresses.
30. Mobile-Friendly Test
The gold standard for determining if your page meets Google's mobile-friendly requirements. If your page passes the test, then Google counts it as mobile friendly, which is a bonafide (albeit small) ranking factor. If your page isn't mobile-friendly, it will give you specific areas to address.
Free SEO tools that have so many functions, they have their own special category.
31. Chrome DevTools
The sheer number of SEO tasks you can perform—for free—with Chrome DevTools is simply staggering. From JavaScript auditing to speed to On-Page SEO, some of the best features are hidden away but totally awesome. Need some specific ways to use it for SEO? Check out these resources here, here, and here.
32. Marketing Miner
Marketing Miner has a low profile in the United States, but it's one of the best-kept secrets of Eastern Europe. If you need to pull a lot of SERP data, rankings, tool reports, or competitive analysis, Marketing Miner does the heavy lifting for you and loads it all into convenient reports. Check out this list of miners for possible ideas. It's a paid tool, but the free version allows to perform a number of tasks.
Get it: Marketing Miner
One of the original SEO toolbars, the MozBar has seen significant upgrades over the years. Log in with a free Moz account and get link metrics as you browse the web, perform on-page analysis, and SERP analysis. The free version is super-useful by itself, while Pro users get additional functionality like advanced keyword suggestions.
Get it: MozBar
34. SEMrush
Like Moz, SEMrush offers a full suite of all-in-one SEO tools, and they have a free account option that works well if you only work with a single website, or only need a quick peek at top level data. The free account level gives you access to one "project" which includes basic site auditing, as well as limited keyword and domain reporting.
Get it: SEMrush
35. SEO Minion
SEO Minion is a very popular Chrome extension that goes beyond most SEO toolbars. Some of the quick functions it performs include analyzing on-page SEO, check broken links, Hreflang checks, a SERP preview tool, and a nifty Google search location simulator. Definitely worth trying out.
Get it: SEO Minion
36. SEOquake
Out of all the SEO toolbars available on the market, SEOquake is probably the most powerful, and comes with a plethora of configuration options — so you can configure it to adjust to your SEO needs. Aside from offering a boatload of data for every URL you visit, you can also perform basic on-page audits, compare domains, and export your data.
Get it: SEOquake
37. Sheets for Marketers
Sheets for Marketers isn't a tool per se, but a website that contains over 100+ free templates to perform a huge number of tasks using Google Sheets. Find powerful free sheets for everything including competitive analysis, site audits, scraping, keyword research, and more. This is a website for your bookmarks.
On-page SEO
Tools to help you maximize your content potential at the page level.
38. Natural Language API Demo
While there is some debate over how actionable Google's Natural Language API is for SEO, there is no denying it's a cool tool with lots of advanced analysis. The free demo allows you to analyze the text of a single page at a time and lets you see how a search engine would view entities, sentiment analysis, syntax, and categorization.
Get it: Natural Language API See also: Advanced SEO Strategies using Natural Language Processing
39. Rich Results Test
Did you implement review rating stars in your JSON-LD, and want to see if your markup is valid for Google's Rich Results? Getting a passing grade doesn't mean your page will automatically display rich results in the SERPs, but think of it as the cost of admission (the cost being free, of course.)
40. Structured Data Testing Tool
Bookmark, bookmark, bookmark this page. Google's Structured Data Testing tool is essential for not only troubleshooting your own structured data but performing competitive analysis on your competitor's structured data as well. Pro Tip: You can edit the code within the tool to troubleshoot and arrive at valid code. Get it: Structured Data Testing Tool
41. Tag Manager
On the surface, Google Tag Manager serves a simple purpose of allowing you to inject "tags" (such as Google Analytics) into your HTML. Beyond that, advanced users can leverage Tag Manager for a host of SEO functions. While Google recommends against using Tag Manager to insert important elements like structured data, it remains useful for a ton of SEO-related activities.
42. View Rendered Source
This simple JavaScript auditing tool does one thing, and it does it very well. View Rendered Source is a free Chrome plugin that allows you to easily see the fully rendered DOM of any URL, and compare it to the original HTML. Great for JavaScript auditing and troubleshooting.
43. BuzzSumo
As an SEO research tool, BuzzSumo is awesome. Its Chrome extension is one of the few tools available that deliver reliable social share count estimates for any piece of content. You don't get as much data with a free account, but you still get access to top content and trending data. One of our favorite tools.
Get it: BuzzSumo
Hunter is a popular email search tool, and definitely the most popular free email finder. Use it to find the email address associated with any company or individual, and verify any email address you already have. 50 free queries/month before paid plans kick in.
Get it: Hunter Also popular: Viola Nobert
SimilarWeb is like competitor analysis on steroids. You can research your competitor's traffic, top pages, engagement, marketing channels, and more. The free offering is limited to five results per metric, but it's often enough to grab a quick data point. Get it: SimilarWeb
46. Wappalyzer
There are lots of tools that help you analyze what technology stacks a website runs on, but Wappalyzer is an SEO favorite. It's 100 percent free (unless you want advanced reporting) and will instantly tell you what technology a site is using. For example, are they using Yoast or All In One SEO Pack?
Get it: Wappalyzer
Gotta be honest, I personally use the Wayback Machine 2–3 times a week. It's perfect for uncovering historical data. You can even find a trove of historical robots.txt files archived. There are a ton of other SEO uses for Wayback Machine you may find useful. 100 percent free.
Tools to speed up your site in order to improve engagement, increase conversions, and rank higher.
48. Cloudflare

Aside from a free CDN to speed up your site, it also allows for easy DNS management, and 100 percent free DDoS protection. You can run on a paid plan forever, but if you're ready to upgrade, the pro features are super cool and amazingly affordable.
Get it: Cloudflare
GTmetrix is one of many webpage speed performance tests that SEOs love to use. It provides familiar reports such as PageSpeed, YSlow, and Waterfalls, as well as automatically visualizing historic data for each page it analyses.
Get it: GTmetrix
Lighthouse is Google's open-source speed performance tool. It's also the most up-to-date, especially in terms of analyzing the performance of mobile pages and PWAs. Google not only recommends using Lighthouse to evaluate your page performance, but there is also speculation they use very similar evaluations in their ranking algorithms.  Get it: Lighthouse
51. Page Speed Insights
Page Speed Insights is another Google tool built on top of Lighthouse, with one key added metric: Field Data. Field Data uses metrics collected by the Chrome User Experience Report so you can see how your page performs with real users across the globe. Not every page has data, but it's super useful when it does.
52. SpeedMonitor.io
If manually logging into a speed tool to check your performance each day isn't your thing, consider SpeedMonitor.io. It uses Lighthouse data to gauge performance, then tracks it over time and stores the results — all for free. You can even add competitor tracking and on-demand audits.
Get it: SpeedMonitor.io
53. WebpageTest
Webpage test is another performance tool similar to GTMetrix. It breaks down performance into easy-to-understand grades, along with some of the most detailed performance reports found anywhere.
Get it: WebpageTest
To be honest, there are literally hundreds of Wordpress plugins that can be helpful for SEO. You almost always want a "general" SEO plugin, and we've listed two below. For others, you have a lot of options, but this list from Kinsta is a good place to start.
54. Rank Math
The "new" kid on the Wordpress SEO plugin block, RankMath is quickly earning a cult following among certain SEO pros. It's fully functional and comes with some cool features like built-in redirection, which means needing to install fewer plugins or pay for upgrades. Worth checking out.
Get it: Rank Math
55. Yoast SEO
Yoast is the "name" in Wordpress SEO. The most trusted name, the most installed (30 million sites) and often, the most innovative. With the help of our friend Jono Alderson, they've created some amazing advances in the delivery of structured data. I personally use Yoast on most of my Wordpress sites, and they are obviously highly recommended.
Get it: Yoast SEO
Bonus: Free Google Sheet of All 55 Tools
We've included a Google Sheet containing all 55 tools listed above. You can make a copy of the sheet and file away for your personal use, or share with your team.
A lot of smart SEOs deserve credit for helping out with the recommendations in this post. A number of folks contributed suggestions from Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit.
A comprehensive list of SEO tools and resources is maintained by Saijo George. It's continually updated and well maintained. You can find it here.

Books Territory: Where the Family Business Is Selling Books
Tumblr media
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — To outsiders, Kentucky’s largest city may be best known for its active bourbon distilleries, a baseball bat factory, famous fried chicken and a certain horse race run the first Saturday in May, but just ask someone there where to buy a book. “Carmichael’s,” said one longtime resident, “is a Louisville institution.”
The year 2019 has already been a big one for Carmichael’s Bookstore. The city’s oldest independent bookseller just celebrated its 41st birthday in April. But in January, Carol Besse and Michael Boggs, the couple who founded the store in 1978, officially passed on ownership to the next generation: their daughter, Miranda Blankenship, and niece, Kelly Estep.
Both Blankenship, 37, and Estep, 44, grew up working in the store. Despite having parents as booksellers, Blankenship didn’t jump right into the family business at first, going off to study in criminal justice in college. “I honestly kind of rebelled away in the early days,” she said, but eventually rejoined the staff after realizing she enjoyed helping people find the right book, whether offering suggested reads or tracking down the right title based on a half-remembered description. “Every day here is different. I realized I didn’t want to sit behind a desk all day,” she said.
Estep’s mother (Besse’s sister) has been a longtime Carmichael’s employee and Estep herself has been working at the store on and off since she was 14, dusting shelves and learning the fundamentals of the retail business at an early age. “Although we are new owners and we’re still fairly young, we have a lot of experience and that’s a good thing,” said Estep.
Established in a city that still makes a lot of its own stuff, Carmichael’s Bookstore — now expanded to two locations and a children’s shop — has a reputation for knowledgeable employees, community involvement and strong support of area authors. “I think the ‘buy local’ movement is thriving here in Louisville and I think it’s growing across the country,” said Blankenship.
The older Carmichael’s Bookstore at 1295 Bardstown Road recently had a growth spurt as well. Last fall, the store expanded into the space left by an adjacent Heine Brothers’ coffee shop that moved across the street. Even with the additional square footage, the Bardstown Road store is still packed with a wide selection of new books, magazines, greeting cards and literary-themed gift items like T-shirts, tote bags, buttons and fabric Sylvia Plath and Zora Neale Hurston dolls.
The store windows are papered with posters advertising the busy Carmichael’s events calendar, which includes several author appearances and a book club gathering each month — usually held over at the larger store at 2720 Frankfort Avenue. The schedule has also included poetry readings, a watch party for “The Great American Read” series on PBS, a musician’s book-and-album signing at a nearby record store and chats with children’s books illustrators.
“People are craving some of that nondigital world and bookstores are providing that, but we also have to make sure we’re modernizing and keeping up with trends,” said Estep. Carmichael’s Bookstore now programs about 250 events a year in its shops and around town.
[Want to explore more of the city after you get done book shopping? Check out “36 Hours in Louisville” for some ideas.]
For young readers, Carmichael’s Kids (at 1313 Bardstown Road) has a healthy selection of children’s books, toys and gifts. One of the store’s picture windows, furnished with pillows and a large stuffed Clifford the Big Red Dog, serves as a “book nook” for in-house sampling. “We do two ‘story times’ a week,” said Blankenship, who said the company also coordinates author readings and book fairs at schools.
Located along streets dotted with restaurants and other small businesses, the Carmichael’s stores have a relaxed, neighborhood feel about them that appeals to the serious book browser out for a morning stroll — or the occasional bus full of tourists spilling out to go shopping. “We’ve always been supported by the community,” said Blankenship. “We were one of the founding members of our local independent business alliance.”
Taking over a long-established family enterprise gives the new owners a chance to put their own stamp on the stores, but they say they don’t have major plans to change a lot of things. “We appreciate and what has obviously been a successful way of doing business for 40 years,” Estep said, “and we think about how we can bring that forward with us and our generation.”
While the founders have largely retired, they haven’t completely stepped away from the family business, whether it be consulting or something more hands-on. As Blankenship noted, “my dad will pick up shifts if we need coverage.”

VBUCKS Review
Fortnite Skins List Every Available Outfits! Pro Game Guides
The multiplayer action survival game, Fortnite: Battle Royale, has met a lot of media coverage recently due to increasing recognition amongst children - and also emerging safety problems. About nothing stays identical in Fortnite whether you want it or maybe not. In fact, the only thing which control continued constants are the three core game modes; solo, duo, and squad. They address for themselves popular to you can play only, with a partner, before with many friends. https://gamezrush.com They include the basis Fortnite was formed about also the methods that immediately comes to mind for all participants. To keep things intriguing for persons who do not enjoy that primary gameplay loop though, there are plenty of limited time ways” to get placed into that shake in the middle mechanics with the competition.
The Fortnite hack offers all with the fans in this activity. Following using to, it will be guaranteed you may act the game without almost any issues. Also, playing video sport becomes other fulfilling than prior to. It is totally worth hoping. There are generally some highlights of the Fortnite hack tool. That permits you to find unlimited important well such as V-Bucks, foods and stiff. Future, the tools have become simple to control then they have friendly interface. The tools are usually private proxy help. This means 100% faint and 100% free virus. Surely, it will not deliver almost any issues in your device.
Does Fortnite deserve their location as one of the world's most popular games? Absolutely. Unlike shooters like Overwatch or Scream of Tax, Fortnite doesn't try to get because much emphasis on player ranks. Matchmaking isn't according to a user's ability levels, that allows players the opportunity to come face-to-face with persons both new and much less expert in the game. This is means: If another or lower-skilled persons are constantly matched against people who are at before something like the reading, they may find it hard to make an impact then suddenly the game turns into a work.
Nothing on the economic subjects are sufficient to drain the game; Apex Legends remains the exciting shooter which makes things its competitors don't. But the fun part associated with any online game, especially a free-to-play one, is a diminishing resource. As Epic has established with Fortnite, the attention economy is finding more aggressive Video activities are no longer just competing with other sports on an ever-expanding number of program, bar with Netflix, podcasts, and the remainder of life.
That fun. Fortnite Battle Royale requests to participants across many genres—strategy, survival, shooter, online multiplayer, battle royale—at an opening difficulty level lower than PUBG, and is designed therefore to activities are rather small, making it easy to replay and to practice. Players can do considerably into Fortnite through a bunch of different approaches (being sneaky, being aggressive, being creative) that helps prevent this by happening boring. And it's still another, meaning that Epic Entertainment is continually adding new items, weapons, positions, with functions to improve gameplay and protect it dynamic.
Why Most VBUCKS Fail
Expected the extreme order, a standalone mode, Fortnite Battle Royale, based on the battle royale game genre but good core Fortnitegameplay, was published for the same program in September 2017.Fortnite is the 100-player Battle Royale tough with PS4, XB1, PC, Mac, and iOS.EpicGamges surprised everyone with the story that the full kind of Fortnite was building the approach to mobile, not one with reduced features or running, but the actual same game. Not individual to, but there's both cross-progression and resist compete with the LAPTOP and console versions as well.
youtube
It's worth seeing that the V-Bucks you buy on the given platform follow that program, so if you've bought 1,000 V-Bucks on Xbox One, you won't meet them now Fortnite Portable and vice versa. However, once you've spent your V-Bucks on products you'll be able to access them across all the platforms you play. Also, as Epic Games didn't launch Fortnite on the Google Play Store, you'll need to authorize payment in another income and can't use any Google Play credit towards the V-Bucks purchase.
Luckily for you, compared to many with the present AAA match of which occur released like as Much Cry 5 and Assassins Creed: Odyssey , Fortnite doesn't require a supercomputer to seep. This is partly into the aesthetic decision the developers chose whilst designing the game. The cartoonish videos and participant models decrease the necessity regarding a top-of-the-range graphics card with CPU. And then there is the distinct, scalable Unreal Engine. To direct this contest, you'll need at least a 64-bit Windows 7 control structure upon the computer. Also, the rig will need to have an Intel Core i3 processor with 4 GB of Remembrance to keep the game ticking. Luckily, the vidoe card minimum need only demands the Intel HD 4000 or better to continue with the game's graphics.
While you may hear attacking someone with your pick, it's best used to produce building ideas by trees, cars and other free-standing objects so you can create your walls, ramps and is a carry-over from the base-defence game Fortnite Battle Royale sprang through, except that mechanic creates a new ingredient to the war royale recipe which makes this stand apart.
There are two different here: COMPUTER and Machine. Both these systems use the Epic launcher with players with these systems make purchases straight by Epic. Popular to suit, you're about out of luck when it comes to a "here's a gift tag for V-bucks" sort of item. Your best choice is to just use a regular old Visa gift cards. If you're giftee compete with Android, do not give them a Google Play gift cards, because Fortnite does not run through Google Play.
Many people are choosing mobile game for entrainment. After the playing a sport, you will feel the confidence with good view. If you are hunting for the stunning game, then you definitely can go for the peak. It's a really amazing mobile activity for farming the fantastic land. The content of that sport is very wide, and also people might play games with all of the part of it. The game is released by supercell, and it is plain to describe this through the android store. Before the game playing you have to look for Fortnite V Bucks Hack.
Fortnite: But the World is designed as player-versus-environment game, with four players cooperating towards a general objective with various missions. The game is set after a fluke storm appears across Earth, causing 98% with the populace to vanish, and the survivors to be confronted by zombie-like "cases". The persons convey the position of commanders of house base shelters, collecting resources, saving survivors, and protecting tools that help to either gather data about the storm or even to rebel the hurricane. But the globe with War Royale don't interact much, yet they act both share the same premium currency. So if you want free V-Bucks, that's where you'll should get.

With every new time comes new amendment for the Fortnite record, keeping gameplay new and exciting. Many of the plan trade for Season 8 occur from the first permission with the road. Many in the record remains the same, such as the diagram transformation from Year 7. One of the primary items you sign on the drawing exists that Wailing Lumber with the products containers have seemed to have fled and replaced with a fiery volcano with a lava stream flowing down the side. As for new named places we have Sunny Stages with Lazy Lagoon. We also have the benefit of the fuel favorite, Risky Reels, to the best right part of the road (replacing the spot where The Bar was). Currently for all of anyone who are fans on the Bar, do not worry as it were removed, but instead has stepped Northeast of Pleasant Park replacing where the motel used be.
Must Have Sources For VBUCKS
If you've spent any time on twitter, you know that a bot-infested problem with a pattern of upending world group for lack of a comma or something. It's no another from the relatively consequence-free planet of sport: right now Fortnite: Battle Royale places are swamped with bots advertising means of getting free V-Bucks, the sport premium currency that can be used to buy skins and other cosmetics. It's gotten bad enough to Epic just had to issue a warning over Twitter: if everyone is reporting you to go to a website and get into your password to get free V-Bucks, they're lying and a sting.
The use of v-Bucks generator is extremally clean and intuitive. Player enters information on the expected number of coins, and the login in Fortnite. He can name no only any amount of v-Bucks, but also special gang of tools, for the generator allows a selection of as many as several different Battle Passes. There is also a prospect to enhance the description status to a higher degree, Stock or Deluxe. An additional advantage of the turbine is it is whole responsiveness, which allows players to use that going on most mobile devices. User is also able to regulate the generator settings to the report of Fortnite and also the program benefited from. The newest side of generator has an improved interface and many useful functionalities. Platform's structural value is devoid of all unnecessary external speeches, and properly optimized for fast burden by all means, perhaps those with slow connection. Owing to that generating Fortnite v-Bucks goes swiftly and relaxed.
Fortnite Battle Royale is a 100-player game in which you play single or as players, and parachute onto a area to help wrestle new participants until only one of people is caused having. To make it harder, areas in which you fun is reducing and a person need to stay in that place to last, setting traps, scavenging systems with body defenses. As the map shrinks, it drives players calm while time goes in, driving confrontation.
Fortnite: Battle Royale's easily one of the biggest free to play activities for the world, then it ought to happened because no surprise to learn the most their earnings turns on the in-game Item Shop where players could acquire cosmetics with real world currency. Of course these don't suggest the advantages, but they're solely for fashions welfare and appearing very amazing.

Magic Story Podcast: Mark Winters
And today was the final Magic Story Podcast for the forseeable future, which means next week we’re off to Amonkhet! My catch-up article is tomorrow, but for now enjoying listening to things about the visual medium of Magic Card Art! Here’s the Link.
Host: Blake Rasmussen
Guest: Mark Winters (His Art)
Topics: Art! Specifically for Aether Revolt.
Tumblr media
Look at Me, I’m the DCI by Mark Rosewater
Mark Winters: Artist and Art Director
Mark is Senior Art Director, meaning he works with creative, design and development to help create the world.
Works with artists to develop look, feel, and tone of the world.
Makes all the art decisions related to sets he’s assigned to.
How did he start at Wizards?
As a kid, he loved drawing for D&D and Transformers and stuck with it over the years.
He left his desk job to become a full-time illustrator around 6-8 years ago, and aimed at Wizards for his first client.
Picked up some work for D&D when Jeremy Jarvis looked at his work, and gave him constructive feedback (it wasn’t good enough).
He worked on his portfolio and sent three pieces to Jeremy, and was given Magic work just a few days later.
His first assignments were for Gatecrash, and then regular with Dragon’s Maze.
He’s been working AT Wizards for three years.
Was he a formally trained artist?
He went to art school for a year and didn’t like it.
Otherwise self-taught, but went to workshops like the Illustration Master Class.
Making breakthroughs in learning was tough, he’d learn really good lessons he wouldn’t know how to apply for years before it clicked.
He enjoys hanging out with people much better than him, and he learns a lot but feels terrible about his own art.
Has he art directed other sets?
From the Vault: Angels was his first set.
He’s been commissioning things here and there.
Aether Revolt was his first set as an art lead, but he’s done several since.
Jay’s Note: Remember, they’re into things we’re not going to see until 2019-2020 at this point, although commissioning art probably only 2018-2019.
Art Direction for Aether Revolt
How did they approach showing the Revolt of Aether Revolt?
They gave the Consulate a sort of Stalinist/Fascist Vibe.
Obsessed with Order and Infrastructure, but the Renegades are getting around that.
They approached it from flat camera angles with the Consulate, and camera angles all over the place for the Renegades, giving them very different feels.
What about Vehicles?
Whirring fans in the place of wheels.
Leave in the Dust a great example.
Thopters have propellers.
Basically, give it enough ‘real’ things to make it seem like a vehicle while still staying abstract.
How do you keep characters consistent between art?
They have ‘contingencies’, namely that certain pieces of art are contingent on one another.
If a character exists, they can reference it.
If it’s a new character, they might design the character in-house, but it generally doesn’t happen. They’d go and use art from the concept push, and commission the character’s real art out.
They commission in Waves:
Wave 1: Every character who needs to exist in other art.
Wave 2: The other art dependent on the characters.
What are some of the details Mark loves?
They have a pretty smart fan base...
Jay’s Note: *Blushes*
... so if he noted nice touches, people would react with “no duh”
Jay’s Note: It me.
Masterpiece Inventions were the inventions that were confiscated and are in the Consulate Warehouse, unlike the Kaladesh ones which are on display at the Fair.
What are his favorite pieces from Aether Revolt?
Consulate Crackdown captures all the Consulate vibe they talked about.
Frontline Rebel really captures the Rebel vibe.
Kari Zev is the other piece he likes the most.
What is his favorite piece of all time?
Cartographer, from a composition standpoint. The flowing maps are really impressive.
Do you own/collect Magic Art?
Not really a collector, but has original art from (magic) artists he admires. Including Cynthia Sheppard.
Is it awkward collecting from people he works with?
No, it’s super convenient. Can do art swaps and the like.
What are you working on now?
It’s super awesome, and that everyone involved has put a lot of passion into it, and blood, sweat, and tears have gone into it.
Jay’s Note: Dominaria
When is it coming out?
2018
Jay’s Note: Dominaria
Is that how far ahead you usually work?
No, he’s done concept art for a set not coming out until 2026-8, but not actively (a few concepts, no card file or anything).
Next Week: Magic’s Story returns!
