The primary reason I love the Greens is that they are so messed up. They are not perfect, they are not disinfected and favored by the narrative, and they are raw to the bone; they are real.
Aegon is as real as a devastated and soul-crushed father gets whose grief translates to anger and violence. Helaena’s silent inner turmoil and anguish haunt the Red Keep. Alicent has become a wreck as she weighs this tragedy the only way she knows how: against her own failed moral compass, holding herself responsible.
Otto sees his strings of power stretch and snap as he pursues the unattainable dream once more. Criston feels unworthy and consoles himself with the deception that he remains unsullied by still bearing a white cloak to his name, having been absolved of his original oath-breaking years before. And Aemond refuses to acknowledge any weakness or softness in front of his family so he seeks consolation elsewhere.
This green family doesn’t know how to process emotions, doesn’t know how to grieve together, and can’t find solace in each other’s suffering despite yearning for comfort. Otto doesn’t know how to comfort Alicent, Alicent doesn’t know how to comfort Aegon, and Aegon doesn’t know how to comfort Helaena.
Larys exerts his influence and puppeteers Alicent to his own liking by giving her a much-desired grasp of agency over political affairs. Alicent finds escape in undiscovered indulgences that give her the intoxicating illusion of control over a lifetime of servitude. Criston succumbs to the addictive drug of being desired and wanted on equal terms. The Greens live in a vicious circle of unhealed trauma, a bottomless pit of fears and insecurities, and a tangled web of deception and control.
They are wounded, dysfunctional, and forsaken, and that makes them so intriguing.

Fiat 8V Demon Rouge, 1953, by Vignale. Numerous bodies were created for the Fiat 8V, the 8V ‘Demon Rouge’ (Red Devil) was one of the last. Presented at the Turin Motor Show (b&w pic), the design was by Giovanni Michelotti, built by Vignale. The Demon Rouge is currently housed at the Louwman Museum in Holland. The Fiat 8V (or "Otto Vu") got its model designation because at the time of its making, Fiat believed Ford owned a copyright on "V8".

I think the thing that gets me about Aegon's season two arc is that he spent his entire life trying to avoid being King, insisting he wasn't worthy, wasn't suited, that he wanted no part of it.
But once he did become King he tried his best to live up to the mantel. He did everything in his power to try and rule justly, wisely, fiercely as a Targaryen King should and instead discovered that wasn't what anyone wanted. The council that usurped the crown for him, the grandfather who punished him constantly for being weak and 'unkingly', even the mother that insisted that this was his father's will- none of them wanted him to live up to the ideal. They wanted him to be weak, pliable, obedient. It was never about him. It was never about his claim. It was never really even about his gender. It was about their ambitions, their desires, their power- and how getting him on the throne would realize them.
It's no mistake that Alicent and Otto are suddenly nostalgic for Viserys and his reign. Daemon all the way back in episode 1 said it outright- Viserys was weak and let his council (and later Alicent) play him for their own ends, eventually simply surrendering rule to them whole sale as his health worsened. That's what they want of Aegon- to find his version of the Old Valyrian stone model and retreat to it so that they can rule in his name. Alicent was even convinced in the season 2 opener one it would happen soon- that 'ruling would loose it's novelty soon enough' and then she and Otto would take over again.
But it doesn't. Because their is a yearning chasm deep in Aegon's soul in a way their wasn't in Viserys's. Viserys had accepted that he wasn't the best suited for the throne long ago, maybe as soon as the Great Council had given it to him. But Aegon wants to believe, maybe has to believe, that he is suited. That he can rise to this burden. The moment the small folk cheered for him at his coronation, the moment they gave him that validation, he needed to chase it again. No matter how much his council ignores him, no matter how much Otto dismisses him, no matter how much Aemond undermines him or his mother tells him to simply be derelict the same duty she had always demeaned him for not fulfilling. He keeps chasing that feeling, of being good enough.
And that chase...leads to him flying desperately to the field of battle in an effort to prove himself.

Aemond the Prince Regent ✨
And so one-eyed Aemond the Kinslayer took up the iron-and-ruby crown of Aegon the Conqueror. “It looks better on me than it ever did on him,” the prince proclaimed.

I don’t understand how anyone can truly hate young Alicent Hightower. Like how are you gonna look at a young girl who’s practically being pimped out by her own father and then call her a cunt. Not only that but I remember when episode two came out people where not only at the characters throat but also the actress who played her.
And it’s just so heartbreaking because you can very clearly see that Alicent doesn’t want to be anywhere near that man. Every single time I saw her near him it looked like she was about to cry and just wanted to be somewhere else. Don’t even get me started about how heartbroken she looked when her father told her to where one of her DEAD mother’s dress to the King, she looked as if her world had just ended and I was surprised she didn’t have a full blown panic attack.
Tumblr media
Then in episode two when Viserys told her not to tell Rhaenyra that she was visiting him, as if that’s not the #1 thing abusers tell their victims. And people had the audacity to say, “while why didn’t she just tell Rhaenyra?”. As if Alicent isn’t 15 years old, obviously she’s not gonna tell her friend when her KING and her father told her not to!
