reading Orphans Path and between the flawless humor sitting there in tears like…. It’s devotion, it’s about devotion, the whole thing is about platonic devotion. The whole story is how loyalty and love and friendship and family makes the world go round. Techno heals Phil, gives him a home and a friend, so Phil cares enough to help Techno escape. Techno has nowhere to go, nothing to strive for, nothing to devote himself to, until Phil. the same is true in opposite. Phil has nothing but Techno. So when Techno is dying, of course Phil looses his mind trying to get him to a shrine. And it keeps going, the entire story is like this, one little vignette of love and loyalty after another. The devotion they both share to Justice, to their people, driving them to take over SMPEarth. The devotion their men give them back. The friendship between Elijah and Techno getting them out of trouble. When Phil ascends, Techno can do nothing But watch. When Phil nearly goes mad, it’s Techno who keeps him grounded. Techno ascends because of devotion. Philza watches too. Techno is literally the god of COVENANTS for heavens sake. it’s just….. it’s so good you guys. Please read this series

Hands got to the rendering of Mitt'raw'nuruodo's sketches. It was unusual to draw him without the Grand Admiral’s signature hairstyle, but I really wanted to make a strong contrast between his life “before” and “after” starting his service in the navy. Life on his home planet certainly wasn't easy.

+ some parallel with Ezra and his fate.

…And I still think the idea of ​​making Thrawn's kintsugi-style form during his exile is my best idea :3 After red eyeliner on Karyn's eyes, of course.

Orphan’s Path is one of the most beautiful pieces of fanfiction I’ve ever read- it just /perfectly/ encapsulates the boundless creativity that was my favorite thing about the MCYT fandom. Beyond just the storytelling though- the WORLDBUILDING just astounded me. From the more story-based beats like Sky and Moon’s Landing, Lagos’s splintering, and the Manifold, to the more general MC worldbuilding like totems of undying being created via ritual, pearleye, and ofc all the new months and the longer years and the server mechanics!

There are so many worldbuilding aspects I look at and go “i don’t know how they came up with this idea but i am going to aspire to reach for this level of creativity every time I try and tackle Minecraft as a setting.” I’m sure having multiple heads to put together for ever-fresh concepts really helped too!

I was wondering- did you have any sort of..personal guidelines or jumping-off-points as to how to approach integrating things into the Orp universe? Questions you’d ask yourselves or a theme to keep in mind with each new feature you figured out? Because I’d be delighted to be able to create with the same spirit y’all did. It’s inspired me ever since I first read Orp, and I think I’ll always look to it as an example of how much you can do when you’re handed a few pieces of lore and are determined to carry it all the way home.

a lot of what you're describing for how i approach worldbuilding boils down to "yes, and?" like taking even the most innocuous offhand stuff and deciding to find ways it does work. accepting it as true in some form and figuring out how this affects other things.

and the most important thing is you have to be willing to do this even with ridiculous shit. because all jokes come from something real, and you gotta not be embarrassed about writing a story or thinking about something stupid. be willing to look at something ridiculous and go "why ISN'T this stupid" first, "why IS this stupid" second. sometimes, it really can't be anything but stupid! but if you let a silly element breathe, that's where you can find a certain meat to a story that sometimes doesn't exist anywhere else.

fear is the mind killer. cringe is also the mind killer. you gotta shank any sense of shame or embarrassment that can come with engaging the premise YOU decided to create and explore, and a huge part of that is acknowledging the implications of seemingly (or genuinely) unserious elements of something at face value. writing off a character's silly name, goofy theme song, or meme humor is easier on yourself, sure, but it's so much more interesting in the long run if you don't. the absurdity of a setting is part of the setting! don't pretend it isn't!

you CANNOT get "piglin family units dictate the societal structure of the nether" in orp without first accepting "orphans killed my parents".

Asfjhgh and thats all my brain needs before I obsessed again So to commemorate the first time I thought about orphan path this year, I immediately dropped what I was doing and did a drawing about it. Case #0: Batman

Batman has no vision.

Case #1: Nightwing

Dick Grayson obtained his vision at age ten, two years after Batman took him in. His intense feelings drove him to go behind his mentor's back, tracking down his parents' killer and hatching a plan to eliminate him.

As he stood over the cowering man, gun in hand as Zucco begged for his pathetic life, his finger tensed and relaxed over the trigger of the gun. A purple glow shone. Till now, he does not know if it was an appeasement or an order from the gods.

A few moments later, Batman arrived to find his ward with a gun and vision in his hand. Despite this, Tony Zucco was still breathing.

Case #2: Red Hood

Jason Todd was captured and tortured in a warehouse in Qurac by Joker. After sustaining severe injuries, he was tied up and left with a ticking time bomb beside him.

Perhaps, as the bomb ticked to its final second, Jason had thought that Batman had forsaken him. That he had lost his father. However, even the bright cyan energy that suddenly emitted could not save him from his fiery fate.

Jason Todd was buried with a grey anemo vision.

Case #3: Batgirl

Cassandra has no vision. Perhaps she might have had one before, David Cain was never a big fan of magic given by the gods.

Case #4: Red Robin

Tim Drake had been training under Batman to take the mantle of Robin. It was a late night, Batman was out on patrol and Tim was burying himself in case files. Unfortunately, he had fallen asleep in the mess.

When Batman returned, he was greeted by a green glow and it was then that he knew Tim was destined to be the world's greatest detective.

Case #5: Spoiler

Stephanie Brown was young when she acquired her vision. She had walked into one of her father's nefarious crimes. Of course she was afraid, it was only natural.

But as she sat in her bedroom in the quiet of the night, she swore to spoil her father's plans. The next day, she found a glowing purple jewel under her bed along with a purple hood.

Case #6: Robin

Damian Wayne was stubborn, naive and... forgiving. In the end, it was his love for his mother that ended his life. Not many understood but Batman did.

That was why he was so enraged when he found Damian's letter, it was lit by a cold blue light. The cryo vision was dim but not grey, almost mocking him with his son's death.

Rage bubbled inside as Batman took his frustrations out, it was only overtaken by guilt at the sight of fractures in the precious ornament. The light flickered before extinguishing.

a Lady and Her Angel

its way past the time for me to actually make fanart for this fic and probably few people care, but i like to revisit it every few months as i often do many fics i enjoy. im sort of blending the orp!canon with my own designs because i forgot what they look like. and also, im fond of philza's funky shawl/skirt thing i designed.

this is part of a small series im kind of doing based on songs from the Vide Noir album by Lord Huron and various scenes/characters from the fanfic series known as Orphan's Path. orphan's path is no longer being updated due to all of the shit that happened following the content creator; Technoblade's death, as well as allegations about former DSMP members that will not be named here, but i highly encourage anyone who hasnt read it before to check it out :) its got some beautiful writing in there that's inspired me in my own personal work, which is possibly the highest honor i can think of bestowing upon a fic and a cast of writers as a whole.

this particular drawing has a song, as will others in the series if i complete it, and that song is Moonbeam! ive used it in it's speedpaint, if you're interested in getting the full effect

hope you all enjoy! it was honestly a treat to revisit these two and think about how to conceptualize whats been floating around in my head for the past few months since my last reread while listening to the song.

Hi yes I’m rereading Orphans Path on AO3 (multiple authors) and BOY HOWDY DO I LOVE THIS SERIES. Never have I encountered humor this well-done. Look at this. (These bits are from the second installment in the series):

“How- how big is the guy?” the tailor nervously asks, looking towards the entrance.

“Boy,” Philza jauntily smiles as Techno tries to duck into the two block tall door after him, “I’m so glad you asked!”

“This is a very large man,” Techno says as he points at a horse.

Philza frowns. “Techno, that’s a horse.”

“Surely not.” Techno wanders closer to the horse, meeting its frighteningly dark eyes. “I see a well of a thousand souls within its gaze.”

“It’s… still a horse.”

aye lads, orphan's path is officially and functionally biting the dirt.

we're not deleting it. ultimately, my feeling is that reducing the hard work of everyone around wilbur to simply the accessory of a serial abuser would be a shit thing to do. but he was a central writer and played a central character, so we can't in good conscience continue the story. the author team has floated the idea of writing an epilogue for phil and techno's characters, but that's a fat maybe.

for now, we're done. the series is an archive of a different story and a different time. we've put a note about it in the main series page and the installments that feature wilbur's characters, as well as a link to domestic violence resources in the UK.

on a side note, i've been made aware that discord doesn't let you embed their images on external sites anymore, which has broken the extraneous guides on our ao3. I'll either post the images here, or have to delete the companion guides and direct people to the discord where these images are freely available to view.
