California Voters:  Vote YES on Proposition 10--Fairness to Renters paying in excess of 30% of their income on rent.
Make it clear to greedy developers and unscrupulous landlords that the rent is too damn high!  We’re counting on grassroots supporters to step up and vote for Proposition 10 on November 6. Your vote and your voice COUNT! Give the right of city self-determination back to each city government = local control.  People on fixed incomes like retirees, veterans, and others require reasonable rents.  Median home values have increased by 80% since 2011.   More than half the renters in the state of California spend MORE than 30% of their income on rent (Haas Institute for Fair & Inclusive Society, UC Berkeley).

Critics Vote ‘In Heat of Night’ Best Movie
A. H. Weiler, The New York Times, 29 December 1967
The New York Film Critics, in their 33d annual poll, yesterday named In the Heat of the Night best picture of 1967.
The drama concerns crime and race prejudice in the Deep South, and featured a confrontation between Rod Steiger as a Southern sheriff and Sidney Poitier as a Northern Negro detective. Mr. Steiger won his first critics’ award as best actor for his portrayal.
Dame Edith Evans won the top actress award for her playing of a lonely, poverty stricken old lady in a British drama, The Whisperers. For Dame Edith, the distinguished 79-year-old British actress, it is her first citation from the critics’ group.
La Guerre Est Finie, the French drama about the political and romantic trials of an aging Spanish revolutionary in France, emerged the winner in, the foreign-language category in a contest that also involved films from Sweden, Spain and Czechoslovakia.
Mike Nichols beat out four competitors for outstanding director honors, gaining a citation for The Graduate, his second film. Mr. Nichols the former nightclub and television performer, directed the film of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The year’s best screenwriting accolade went to David Newman and Robert Benton for Bonnie and Clyde, their first film.
Fifteen critics voted on the awards at the New York Newspaper Guild Clubhouse, 133 West 44th Street Under the organization’s by-laws, a two-thirds majority on any of the first five ballots or a simple plurality on the sixth is needed to name a winner. Voting went to the sixth ballot on all except actor and actress classifications.
In the Heat of the Night, directed by Norman Jewison from a script by Stirling Silliphant for the Mirisch Corporation, was released by United Artists and opened at the Capitol Theater last August.
Bonnie and Clyde, Ulysses, In Cold Blood, The Graduate and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? also received votes.
In the foreign film category, La Guerre Est Finie won over Elvira Madigan, Swedish romantic drama; The Battle of Algiers, a documentary-like Italian-Algerian drama; The Hunt, from Spain; Closely Watched Trains, from Czechoslovakia, and La Vie de Chateau, from France.
Mr. Nichols’s competitors for best director were Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde); Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night); Richard Brooks (In Cold Blood) and Alain Resnais (La Guerre Est Finie).
Mr. Steiger’s competition for best actor came from Spencer Tracy (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?), Yves Montand (La Guerre Est Finie), Paul Newman (Cool Hand Luke) and Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate).
Dame Edith Evans beat out Sandy Dennis (Up the Down Staircase); Annie Girardot (Live for Life); Audrey Hepburn (Wait Until Dark), Anne Jackson (The Tiger Makes Out), Barbara Jefford (Ulysses) and Jo Van Fleet (Cool Hand Luke).
In the screenwriting category, Bonnie and Clyde competed against The Graduate, Ulysses, Two for the Road, How I Won the War, In Cold Blood, Closely Watched Trains, In the Heat of the Night and La Guerre Est Finie.
The award winners will receive plaques on Jan. 28 at a reception at Sardi’s on West 44th Street.
The critics who voted were: Archer Winsten and Frances Herridge of The New York Post; Wanda Hale, Katheieen Carroll and Ann Guarino of The Daily News; Leo Mishkin of The Morning Telegraph; Phyllis Funke of The Suffolk Sun; William Wolf, Cue magazine; Joseph Gelmis of Newsday; Judith Crist of the National Broadcasting Company Today show; Joseph Morgenstem and Paul Zimmerman of Newsweek magazine, and Bosley Crowther, chairman of the society, Howard Thompson and A. H. Weiler of The New York Times.
