“Micronauts” Get New Omnibus Collection

Marvel Comics is reprinting the entire comics run of Micronauts. Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1 will collect Micronauts (1979) #1-29, and Annual (1979) #1-2, as well as material from Micronauts Special Edition (1983) #1-5. The comics have been restored and the collection will also include the letters pages and bonus material like house ads, original artwork, and more. The Micronauts comics were written by Bill Mantlo with artwork by Michael Golden. Other artist featured in the Omnibus are Howard Chaykin & Pat Broderick with Steve Ditko & Rich Buckler.

“In Micronauts, Commander Rann, Princess Mari, Biotron, Acroyear and Bug traverse the universe aboard the microship Endeavor as they struggle to free Homeworld from the tyrannical Baron Karza. Their exploits also bring them to Earth where our micro-sized heroes encounter big-time heroes and villains including the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain Universe and Man-Thing.” (Marvel Comics)

Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1 goes on sale in April 2024. The Omnibus features a main cover by Dave Cockrum and direct market exclusive variant covers by Steve Ditko, Butch Guice, and Michael Golden.

 In addition to the Omnibus, Marvel will also sell a new Facsimile Edition of Micronauts #1, cover by Dave Cockrum, in September 2023.

March 4th - Bug

The adventurer known only as Bug is an Insectivorid thief and political dissident heralding from the world of Kaliklak in the subatomic realm called The Microverse. Bug was captured by agents of the tyrannical Baron Karza and forced to compete in the deadly gladiatorial games.  With the help of the fellow gladiator, Price Acroyear, Bug was able to escape and the two helped to form the band of freedom fighters known as The Micronauts.  

After countless battles, the evil Baron was defeated and The Micronauts achieved their goal.  Bug branched off for further adventures.  A journey through the negative zone resulted in Bug being transported to the macro-world  where he was captured by the Kree and conscripted to battle against The Phalanx as a part of StarLord’s new team of heroes.  

Bug remained an ally of StarLord throughout the Annihilation event and later joined him as a member of the new Guardians of The Galaxy.  He remained with the team throughout the War and Realm of the Kings events, ultimately leaving the team to help form the Knowhere Corps.  Following further adventures, Bug was among the heroes summoned by Mister Fantastic to help fight the Scourge from the Cancerverse led by Void.

Bug first appeared in Micronauts Vol 1 #1 (1978).

Pat Broderick Birthday: Tim Drake as Robin (New Earth)

Today is Pat Brodericke's 65th birthday (26 November) – an American comics artist who is best known for his work on the Micronauts and Alpha Flight for Marvel Comics, and Legion of Super-Heroes, Captain Atom and Green Lantern for DC Comics. Broderick also pencilled the four-part "Batman: Year Three" storyline, written by Marv Wolfman, which detailed the first meeting of Batman and Tim Drake – his most important work. To commemorate his birthday, I thought it would be apropos to do a photoset of Tim Drake’s first outing as Robin. As a young boy, Drake was in the audience the night Dick Grayson's parents were murdered and later managed to discover the identities of Batman and the original Robin through their exploits. After the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd, and witnessing Batman spiral into darkness, Tim was convinced that he should train to become the third Robin. Image Source:

Various Reading Orders/Collected Edition Details for the Guardians of the Galaxy

In this post I will lay out the reading order and collected editions info for the “original” Guardians of the Galaxy team set in the 31st century. I will also provide reading orders on a few of the modern Guardians with more obscure backgrounds. Without further ado, check out the lists below and have a blast.

Original Guardians Reading Order

This is a pretty much complete reading order for the original team. As discussed in the other post, most of the early parts are written by Steve Gerber. Then the major Korvac Saga crossover by Jim Shooter. Then the 1990 series is written about half and half by Jim Valentino and Michael Gallagher. The final three pieces are written by Dan Abnett.

Collected Editions

My recommendations: The original Korvac Saga is a must read for all Marvel fans. It is one of the true classic stories of the Jim Shooter era. The Guardians being in it is just a convenient bonus. If one somehow prefers the Guardians over the Avengers, might as well grab that second Tomorrow’s Avengers trade. The first one is easily recommended though. All of the early 1970s Steve Gerber oddities between one book. The Jim Valentino era is worth exploring if one enjoys pre-Image 1990s Marvel comics.

After many DnA fans continued to grumble about Brian Michael Bendis’ take on the Guardians in Marvel Now, the publisher relented and gave Abnett (now split from longtime writing partner Andy Lanning) some minor gigs writing the obscure future Guardians. Despite being a huge fan of his work, I haven’t gotten around to checking this chunk out since it was always presented and discussed as the pity project.

All of Peter Quill’s early adventures are collected in a paperback called Star-Lord: Guardian of the Galaxy. It also includes the strange Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Thrawn Trilogy) written miniseries starring Sinjin Quarrel.

Notes: The Mantlo/Mignola miniseries is a beauty, but nothing here is particularly compelling. The origin and characterization for Rocket was drastically changed by the Annihilation era crew as well.

Even still, Abnett and Lanning mostly blaze a new path with her, ignoring most of this baggage.

October 3rd - The Psycho-Man 


The strange being known as The Psycho-Man originated from the Microverse (an expansive system of planets and stars that exists far below the subatomic level). He cultivated a device that could emit sonic frequencies that can affect the emotions of others… install dreadful fear, overpowering anger, unbridled joy, et cetera. The Microverse was experiencing a dire threat of overpopulation and The Psycho-Man decided to use his machine to conquer the world beyond the Microverse. To do so, he built a mechanical body roughly the size of a human from the Macroverse. His exploits brought him into conflict with The Fantastic Four and The Black Panther; who ultimately defeated him and discovered his true origins as a Micronaut. The Psycho-Man would return time and again for subsequent altercations with The Fantastic Four as well as Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and The Hulk. The Psycho-Man first appeared in the pages of The Fantastic Four Vol. 1 Annual #5.
