The worst part of being fan of mythology stuff is that there's always a bunch of mfs that have a superiority complex because they read and prefer the ancient source better. It happened too when I was in the lmk fandom with jttw. And for some reason those mfs are always white

The Journey To The West is considered the foundation of Eastern literature and its western equivalent would be The Odyssey so then why is there no mpreg in The Odyssey

Sun Wukong: Goodnight moon.
Sun Wukong: Goodnight tree.
Sun Wukong: Goodnight ghosts that only I can see.
Tripitaka: "What?"
Wukong, pulling out the staff: "Don't worry about it."

So, we are all familiar with the story of the journey to the West, and how could we not know and recognise its most famous character, sun wukong
Okay, two things one im bloody numpty and secondly, the version of the story I had didn't have pictures. So before lego monkey kid came out and made it so whenever I think of jttw my brain thinks this
Tumblr media
I had no idea what wukong properly looked like and well.. it wasn't till last year, did I think
'Huh, maybe wukong didn't look like a normal monkey'
That's right for nearly a decade whenever I pictured wukong in my head, weather if their fighting or goofing around. I pictured them looking like this. Just a regular rock monkey.
Tumblr media
It made sense to me, okay

This is twice now that I’ve gotten really obsessed with a piece of classic literature and the tag is just filled with content of a modern adaptation that is a little loose with the source material. Please just give other gay classics nerds.

So after looking up images for a stupid Lego monkie kid joke I was going to make, I’ve learned that the entire show is based off of a 16th century Chinese novel called The Journey to the West, attributed to Wu Cheng’en
Like it’s very similar down to Sun Wukong and the Six-Eared Macaque being direct rips from the original text, the powers Sun Wukong (also called the Monkey King in the text) has, down to the number of polymorph transformations, Tang (or rather his ancestor) is incredibly similar, the white dragon-horse, and Pigsy. His name is actually Pigsy in the English translation and that’s the most surprising part to me.
And now I’m invested in that entire thing I will be looking for an unabridged English translation because I do not know chinese
I will never shut up about this

'And how old are you?' asked Wukong. 'I have lived foolishly for one hundred and thirty years!' said the old man. 'You are still my great-great-great-great-grandson!' said Pilgrim. 'I can't remember when I was born, but I have spent over five hundred years underneath this mountain.' 'Yes, yes,' said the old man. 'I remember my great-grandfather saying that when this mountain dropped from the sky, it had a divine ape clamped underneath it. To think that you should have waited until now for your freedom! When I saw you in my childhood, you had grass on your head and mud on your face, but I wasn't afraid of you then. Now without mud on your face and grass on your head, you seem a bit thinner. And with that huge piece of tiger skin draped around your waist, what great difference is there between you and a demon?'

What if Disney adapted Journey to the West?
There's no need! Overly Sarcastic Productions is giving me all the English-language Journey To The West my heart desires:
This is also literally my only exposure to this epic, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I'd say that any adaptation of this would definitely have to be a series. There's just too much to squash it into a single movie and the episodic nature of the adventures is actually important to the development of the characters.
I've never managed to read the book myself, but I highly recommend this (ongoing) YouTube series summarising it with wonderful drawings and fun commentary <3

Obviously, LMK’s myth varies from the original Journey to The West myth a little bit, for certain details and whatnot, but currently the only thing I can think ab is when Macaque impersonates Sun after Sun gets booted from Tripitaka’s crew and all that but it’s LMK Sun and Macaque. And after Tripitaka boots Sun and he’s just floating aimlessly he’s like “I seriously have no one. I can’t go back to my brothers, they hate me. I can’t go back to the mountain. I’m alone” and then when they visit the buddha to figure out who’s the real Sun Wukong, it takes Sun a minute to process that Macaque is impersonating him, and he gets all pissy. Because Macaque really couldn’t pick another time to get back at him? Had to kick him while he’s down? And that’s when Sun kills Macaque, as relative to the original myth.

Sun Wukong: You often use humor to deflect trauma
Tang Monk: Thank you
Sun Wukong: I didn't say that was a good thing
Tang Monk: What I'm hearing is, you think I'm funny
Wukong: "You are cracking jokes. There's clearly something wrong."
Tang: "What does that mean?!"
Wukong: "YOU DON'T HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR! TRAUMA HUMOR IS MY THING!"
