The Washingtons held a meeting and invited all their neighbors. Samantha spent the entire night avoiding her former lover's stricken gaze. It had been Eddie who had ended their relationship and now they were both married to other people, so she didn't understand why he made her feel uncomfortable like that.

Filled with anger, she couldn't contain herself and confronted Eddie. The young man stopped Samantha's accusations and confessed the reason for his attitude. The real reason for that meeting was none other than to inform the heads of the family that what had begun as simple rumors had transformed over the years into a harsh reality: a war was approaching. The news left everyone present in a mixture of concern and dismay, marking the beginning of uncertain times for the community.

That night the return home had been silent. In the privacy of her bedroom, Maggie began to cry uncontrollably. Not again, I couldn't lose him too, I couldn't get over him this time. Theodore tried to restrain his wife, but he knew that his words of encouragement this time would have no effect. He hugged her tightly and listened to her cry until they both fell asleep from exhaustion.

Samantha se pasó toda la noche evitando la mirada aflijida de su antiguo amante. Había sido Eddie el que había puesto fin a su relación y ahora ambos estaban casados con otras personas, asi que no entendía porqué él la incomodaba de esa manera. 

Llena de enfado, no pudo contenerse y confrontó a Eddie. El joven cesó las acusaciones de Samantha y confesó la causa de actitud. El motivo real de aquel encuentro no era otro que informar a los cabeza de familia de que lo que había comenzado como simples rumores se habían transformado con el paso de los años en una dura realidad: se acercaba una guerra. La noticia dejó a todos los presentes sumidos en una mezcla de preocupación y consternación, marcando el inicio de tiempos inciertos para la comunidad.

Aquella noche la vuelta a casa había sido silenciosa. En la intimidad de su dormitorio, Maggie comenzó a llorar desconsoladamente. Otra vez no, no podía perderlo a él también, no podría superarlo esta vez. Theodore intentó contener a su mujer, pero sabía que sus palabras alentadoras esta vez no surtirían efecto. La abrazó con fuerza y la escuchó llorar hasta que ambos cayeron rendidos por el cansancio.

my nsb gen1 heir atom hastings (they/them). so far they've had one day at work, had their momentum conserver stolen, and reached level 5 in logic and mischief.

David settled back in the city, accompanied by his brother Michael. There they would remain until the wedding day and after the ceremony, the bride and groom would move to the house that David inherited from his late father, where he had spent his early years. It was important for Samantha to meet Michael, as he was the only family David had left and, once they moved, the only one she would have around. Although she longed to leave the town and start her new life with David, she couldn't help but feel sadness at the distance that would separate her from her own family.

A little over a month after getting engaged, the big day arrived. Theo saw the bride arrive and couldn't help but get excited and remember Joe. They were very similar. As he held her in his arms he couldn't help but feel like he was in a place that didn't belong to him. That bitter feeling faded when he remembered that this is what his brother would have wanted. It was his last wish. She took her daughter by the arm and, holding back tears, led her down the aisle of the town chapel to meet her future husband.

And so it was that Samantha Josephine Ward, neé Hastings, and David Leopold Ward were married in late 1913.

Para Samantha era importante conocer a Michael, puesto que era la única familia que le quedaba a David y, una vez se mudaran, la única que ella tendría cerca. Aunque ansiaba salir del pueblo y comenzar su nueva vida junto a David, no podía evitar sentir tristeza por la distancia que la separaría de su propia familia.

Poco más de un mes después de haberse comprometido, llegó el gran día. Theo vió llegar a la novia y no pudo evitar emocionarse, y acordarse de Joe. Eran tan parecidos. Mientras la estrechaba entre sus brazos no pudo evitar sentir que estaba en un lugar que no le pertenecía. Aquel sentimiento amargo se desvaneció al recordar que aquello es lo que su hermano hubiera querido. Fue su último deseo. Tomo el brazo de su hija y, conteniéndo las lágrimas, la condujo a lo largo del pasillo de la capilla del pueblo hasta reunirse con su futuro esposo.

Y así fué como Samantha Josephine Ward, antes Hastings, y David Leopold Ward contrayeron matrimonio a finales de 1913.
