Of being somewhere that would not pander to him, but which would not single him out for any special cruelty either. Any harm would be randomly applied.” 

My rating: 2.5/5.0   Goodreads: 3.59/5.0 

Review: A tender, lovely little book that manages to be extremely forgettable even though it is beautifully written. Andrew’s loneliness throughout his life rings true, but it makes for a hollow, echoing sort of story. The ultimate impression of the book is of a life that lacked real substance and meaning and met an unfortunate and equally meaningless end. It also feels a little like creative non-fiction, the extensive research that Lee has done poking through in obvious ways too often.

extremely well written tale of an interesting life. connection, legacy, and irony interwoven. i loved all the title drops that each contextually redefined what the title means. id love to revisit this book.

if you are an artist just trying out commissions for the first time as holidays come up, my advice to you to avoid burnout is have a clear ToS that states what you do and do not want to do.

not what you can and cannot do, but what you do and do not want to do. don't try to be the cheesecake factory of commission artists and take every single commission even if it doesn't suit your style or preferred subject matter. don't write a little disclaimer about how you aren't very good at backgrounds or vehicles but will do your best; that's how you get a client that for some reason wants a full brooklyn cityscape from you and suddenly you have spent five months stressed out and guiltily avoidant of other projects. just say you aren't offering backgrounds.

if you're not interested or confident in concept and design, be clear in your ToS that you need specific references for things like clothes and features. coming up with design ideas is a completely separate skill from rendering them; figure out with what you are comfortable before accepting the task. a lot of clients themselves don't understand that saying "do whatever" is basically tasking you to design for them, something for which you are well within your rights to charge accordingly.

pick your niche and hone it, and stretch your comfort zone with private work. you'll figure out as you go just how far your comfort zone stretches and can update what you offer accordingly.

love that ryunosuke picks up on this habit—although i know they both mean it sardonically

(also like the way van zeiks uses "my nipponese friend" definitely changes as the game goes on, but imo at the beginning at least it tends to surface when he's particularly frustrated/contemptuous of ryunosuke <- why are you paying attention to this)

it's so fucking funny to me that the reaper of the bailey, known to exclusively tackle the most powerful scum of society, reappears for the first time in 5 years only to take on three seemingly inconsequential trials in a row—all against an otherwise unknown young, foreign lawyer. if i were a member of the london public, i'd be losing my mind.
