Thoughts on 5x01
- Marianna Adams foster is so strong and empowering. She's a real icon for women. Long live queen Marianna you can be sexy and smart Adams foster. - My baby Jude getting maced for protecting his sister. MY HEART IS CRYING. - I'm pretty sure it's illegal for that man to shove Marianna and mace Jude?? (2 accounts of assault, let's get Stef on the case) - obviously Callie and her spoilt ass come out safe. I mean, she's just gonna continue to do stupid things and Stef will save her - Lena is the best mom ever. I just want her and Stef and their family to be happy for once - Emma is irrelevant bye - Callie almost getting raped for the second time, Mariana and Jude getting assaulted is way worse than your broken room and piano Brandon. Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews... The Fosters (S05E01) Resist Airdate: July 11, 2017 @freeform @thefostersseries Ratings: 0.872 Million :: 0.33 18-49 Demo Share Score: 5.75/10 TVTime/FB/Tumblr/IG/Twitter: @SpotlightSaga **********SPOILERS BELOW********** Annnnnd we're back. I want to say it's a miracle that I'm still here, trucking along, keeping up with a Freeform tv series in its 5th Season... But who am I kidding? This isn't the only one I've stuck with on this network even recently... And when it comes to 'The Fosters', it's less about 'a job', or a fan request, than it is about just kind of being stuck in the middle of the Adams Foster drama. Not all the arcs, storylines, or subplots are all that compelling, but even on a bad day there's that one angle on 'The Fosters' that feels at least worthy enough to check in on. Even in its 5th Season, 'The Fosters' has managed to stick its landings more than the network's prized pig (that's literally alive by the grace of God, tho finally completing its 7th & final season) 'Pretty Little Liars', the once critically hailed, now meandering series who only got a final season because of what it did for the network in its beginning stages before creator and Showrunner Lizzy Weiss lost her damn mind, 'Switched at Birth', and tween-teen, action/adventure, fantasy cheese sensation 'Shadowhunters' all combined. If it sounds like I'm being harsh, that's because I am. When you've watched as many hours of ABC Family, now Freeform TV, as I have... At my age... I earn the right to call a spade a spade. 'The Fosters' may not be taking in oodles and oodles of live ratings (not that any tv show aimed at younger audiences is in 2017), but it's the only show on Freeform that didn't show massive losses recently. PLL dropped another 35% in both live viewers & the 18-49 demo, as did 'Shadowhunters', and 'Switched at Birth', a show that ended on an almost unrecognizable note, saw losses of over 50% in both categories. The Fosters averaging out just 4% loss in both, not too bad right... Considering! That's tells me that 'The Fosters', even when making mistakes, isn't driving off their audience in droves. There's something about this show that people sincerely like... And like I said, I honestly like 'The Fosters'. For what it is, this can be one helluva compelling family drama and when it's firing on all cylinders, it's one that is definitely worth your time. Not that 'The Fosters' doesn't have its downbeats. Callie's (Maia Mitchell) storyline with Diamond (Hope Olaide Wilson) and her pimp, Russel 'Daddy' Ortega (Joseph Julian Soria) was truly head shaking, teeth grinding, cringe-tastic nonsense. Truly. But with 'The Fosters', and especially with the character of Callie, it's often less about the angle at hand, than it is about the big picture. Maia Mitchell is young, talented, and capable. The 23 year old Australian Native has a bright future ahead of her, and Showrunner, Writer, and Director Peter Paige is building an epic storyline that's been bubbling to the surface for pretty much the entirety of the show. Whether it's jumping in last second and swapping places with lost girl Christina, or taking on cold murder cases (technically one that is already solved, however poorly done) that are literally none of her business to begin with, to running away at the first sign of trouble when her dreams of officially being in a family start to rear its ugly head, Callie is ALWAYS pressing that 'self-destruct' button. Sometimes it's over the top, but at its core, its continuously relatable... Addicts, those living with depression, purveyors of the human condition; Almost everyone understands what it is to not value their life at one point or another. Poor Stef (Teri Polo) is always there, rushing to clean up Callie's messes... And seeing her break down in the car and finally relay the toll that it's taking on her & the rest of the family and at the same time expressing how much she truly cares about Callie, is one of those extremely honest & vulnerable moments of the show... Special moments like that surprisingly do come often, but they are almost always fleeting. Fosters Fans continue to watch faithfully, because those moments are captured so well and pack such an emotive force, that we're left watching them, deep in our feelings, as they slip through our fingers like sand, leaving us eager for the next one to peak around the corner. Then we have Jesus Adams Foster (now played by Noah Centineo, since S03E10 in August 17, 2015). As a collective, Fosters viewers were all a bit skiddish by the mid-series casting change from former 'Jesus', bad boy Jake T. Austin, as any fan of any series that recasts a major character midway through would be. Slowly but surely, not only has Centineo won our hearts, he's truly become the real Jesus Adams Foster. I honestly couldn't even imagine Jake T Austin in this role anymore, let alone packing the emotional weight and overall nuance that Centineo brings effortlessly to the character, and in a mentally diminished state at that! How impressive! There are times when I don't believe certain characters would make the decisions we're led to believe by the writers that they would make, but Centineo always brings a believability to the Jesus character that acting craft and series veterans, Stef and Lena (Sherri Saum) consistently bring to the table... That's saying something. The kid is good, period, and he's only getting better as the family & teen drama progresses. Paige clearly sees that Centineo has that 'it factor' and that fans are responding because he appears to be taking on a larger role heading into S5. He has storylines and arcs literally circling him, pouring out from every direction. His issues with Brandon (David Lambert) are clearly not over. He's just getting started with live-in biological dad, Gabriel (Brandon Quinn, who's also appearing to step into center stage)... Not to mention whatever breathes naturally from those storylines as everyone in 'The Fosters' tends to affect everyone else somehow, someway. Jude (Hayden Byerly) was literally a footnote in the episode. Although fans tend to enjoy storylines he's involved in (particularly in the relationship category), he's technically the most green actor of the main cast... But he's young and has plenty of time to hone his craft. He's just simply not ready to take the majority of the camera's time. Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) lent him a bit of her spotlight through her fight with privatizing Anchor Beach, another storyline that's clearly just warming up. I never thought I'd say this, but besides my obvious enthusiasm for 'Everything coming up Jesus' in S5, I'm really excited to see what road is taken with Callie's character. She clearly had some type of epiphany in the S5 opener, 'Resist', and I'm really hoping that instead of continuously pressing that self-destruct button like she's been doing for the entirety of the series, she finally blossoms as a character and learns that you can't help others if you can't help yourself. Cheers guys, by the end of S5 'The Fosters' will be hitting 100-102 episodes... If you're still with us at this point, you better not be going anywhere!

Hi Tina!
I’ve seen a lot of posts about the angst that is going to come up between Bucktaylor and I might be wrong but I don’t think any of it is going to happen. The latest is Taylor was in foster care and the person she was on the phone to in 5x6 was about that and the angst is to do with her talking with her parents etc to parallel hens family friend storyline coming up. But I really don’t think it’s going to be that.
I think Tim brought Taylor back to just scratch his reporter itch, he said in an interview he wanted to see more of a reporter angle and this is the easiest way to do it bring back Taylor as his reporter which also adds Buddie angst while buck and Taylor are together.
To me Taylor is just like Ana a plot point. Not meant to be there long term just an obligatory speed bump on the road to Buddie. (I’m not being misogynistic I just don’t think they were brought back to be long term love options or the writers would have sewn them into the fabric of the shown not left them on the sidelines)
MW keeps liking posts saying Buddie isn’t going canon but I think like GW she wouldn’t even be told anything about Buddie.
I think Buddie is 100% going to happen so I don’t know if I am just being negative because of that. Do you think Taylor is meant to be a bigger character than she is right now? I see people wanting her to be a main but I just don’t see it. I’m just interested in your opinion ❤️
Hey, Lisa! I hope you and the family are doing well! 💞 Truthfully, this is the first I'm hearing about people wondering if Girlboss was raised in foster care (??? WHAT) and I imagine this speculation is coming from the same crowd who was hoping their white fave would be worthy of her own "Begins" episode. 😶 It's COMPLETELY unsurprising that these children are rejecting any and all possibility that her phone call had to do with work. Prioritizing a career over being with *Buck* is not gonna win her any new fans :( There must be a more heart-wrenching, sympathetic explanation :( I've seen the theories about a potential new job offer being the reason behind her conversation, but I would also throw in the idea that maybe she was answering a call about about the events of the day - a request/suggestion to "use her connections" to get the real story - and that's why she was treading lightly. (It would also lend credence to the growing opinion that she may actually go digging for information in 5x07.) I can honestly say I've never considered her to be Buck's endgame. IMO, it was easy for Tim to justify bringing MW back because there are proven ways to incorporate her "independent woman" persona (I laugh) without taking away from the firefam. That being said... TayKay The Reporter hasn't actually done all that much reporting. Her tv scenes in 5x01 and 5x03 happened while the other characters (Maddie, Michael, and Harry) were going through tough times. The focus wasn't supposed to be on the redhead with the microphone, but on Maddie, who was struggling to care for her daughter; Michael, who was worried about his son in the aftermath of the kidnapping; and Harry, the child who had just been through a traumatic experience. Tim and the writing staff merely found two scenes where she could be included without deterring from the main plots. So. Take away her reporting (her purpose) and what are we left with? The Girlfriend. Except...she hasn't been much of a girlfriend either, yeah? - Wasn't in the second episode of the season (a glaring decision, quite frankly, since there *was* an unidentified male reporter's voice providing details about the heatwave) and Buck was too worried about Eddie's health to consider how his girlfriend whom he hadn't seen in days might be doing. She never even got a mention. - Shoehorned in at the end of 5x03 to put emphasis on Buck's lingering loneliness despite being in a relationship. "Hi, honey. I'm home. (Without you.)" - Didn't have a role in 5x04 even though Buck was dealing with family troubles. When Buck is punched by his brother-in-law and friend, does he seek comfort in his girlfriend? Confide in her or ask her opinion? No. He turns to Eddie instead. - 5x05 was the first time we saw Girlboss trying to play the part of Girlfriend, and rather than put a spotlight on any off-screen progress they may have made (like we were supposed to assume happened between Buck + Ali), their first scene has TayKay trying to sympathize with Buck by comparing his struggles with the firefam to a boss that wasn't very nice to her. I understand the intention, and I won't knock her for the effort, but ending her anecdote with "So maybe...you might wanna consider that not everything's about you?" was the writers' way of showing us that she STILL doesn't fully "get" Buck. She doesn't realize how personally he takes what he perceives to be rejection. She doesn't realize that he doesn't know how to remove his personal feelings from a situation. Thus, her "advice" is unable to ease his fears because she hasn't taken the time to figure out the best way to get through to him. Not the way Eddie does - and already did the week prior. I'll leave out what just happened in 5x06 because I've said far too much as is, but my point is that this show hasn't actually put a positive spin on either one of her "sides". She's reported the news when it was convenient (and the second time once again depicted her as a woman who will place her career before her relationship...not a good sign for the fate of BT!), and when she's been given the opportunity to step away from that role, to be seen as someone other than a news reporter...she's either deemed unnecessary or presenting herself in a way that makes the audience go "Well, that was awkward."
It's important to remember that every scene and every piece of dialogue has to be approved by the writers, directors, and Timothy. If either MW or Oliver were to veer off script, if something they were doing was giving us the "wrong impression", everyone behind the cameras would put a stop to it. What we're witnessing, what we're feeling is what's SUPPOSED to happen because BT is not meant to be anything more than a detour on Buck's journey to finding the love he so deeply longs for. Now...we wait for him to realize he's going the wrong way and do what he must to get back on the right path ;) (This is so long, y'all. Pls don't hate me.)

Let us assume one of Jason's reasons for his reluctance in canonizing romantic Bellarke was his fear of romance overtaking his show. I don't see how canon Bellarke could have had such an effect.
A showrunner with as much disdain and disinterest in romance would have never allowed it. Bellarke shared airtime with dozens of other characters, all of whom come with a plot attached, and the show itself is plot-heavy. They already had so few scenes exclusive to them without having gotten together. So what if a fraction of them had a more visceral romantic tinge than they already did?
He was already up to his hairline in requests for canon Bellarke and pleas for the opposite. Although he hated the focus ships got, he never did anything to put the constant discourse to rest with a clear, firm answer outside of and within the text that reflected what canon presented about the long-term storytelling around Bellarke.
He kept everyone dangling on the same bait-and-hook for years for viewership. Then got mad when Bellarke and ships continued to be the topic of most discussion. He did it to himself. He helped foster this environment so preoccupied with fictional romantic pairs. If he had stopped playing the inexplicit "interpret it as you wish" game to avoid commitment and evade narrative payoff, the fandom would not have been fraught with so much tension. Tell everyone back in season 1 before the ship wars or in season 2, when the ship wars gained traction, something to the effect of - "Bellarke is our show's intended love story. If I get to tell the story I wish, it will be a very long road for them, filled with obstacles, but they'll get there in the end." Clue us in after 5x01 when the fandom raged over the love triangle. Learn from the backlash of season 3 that it's best not to play with your audience's expectations.
No, nothing he'd do could please everyone. At least we'd all have answers; those who wished to watch the rest of the show would, and those uninterested in what was to come knew where the exit was. Arguing no more about what is canon and what is not. With that question resolved, attention turns to the story at hand, just as he wanted.
But Jason wants to lure people in with ships, then condemn them for their intrigue. His disapproval compounds through the years. Beliza gets married, diverting notably more attention to "ships," which have, for all intents and purposes, transpired now from the fictional realm to the real world, so a portion of the fandom alleges. Until finally, he's angry enough to abuse his authority as the showrunner to use the narrative to punish fans for their interests that don't align with what he thinks fans ought to invest their emotional attachments.
To my ears, it all sounds like a "him" problem that should have been independent of the onscreen material. If he wants to treat his shows as his personal punching bag for catharsis, who will trust him to tune in to his next? Not enough, evidently, because the network axed his prequel, to which I presume the overall lack of fan support from his narrative choices contributed.

qaf season 4 structural analysis
I am studying the structure of season 4 (all as part of my intention to rip it the HELL apart and stitch it back together in a quilt more pleasing to me, if not more happy), and you know what? it feels very much to be a three-act thing, at least where brian and justin's arcs are concerned. posibly where they're all concerned?
act one: 4x01 to 4x05
brian's arc: he's building kinnetik and learning (and willingly) accepting help for his business -- and also, he's building himself back up again brick by brick, redefining his position and place in his career.
justin's arc: he's actually the one NOT willing to accept help or support in Act 1, because he's dealing with PTSD from Darren's bashing and the pink posse
michael and ben: dealing with being foster parents mostly (and partly ben's book / jealousy over hollywood)
Deb: ? pretending she's actually ok with not being needed, when obvs she isn't? (aka vic and rodney)
lindsay: ?
mel: that case and letting go of being "everything"
emmett: sort of, thru 4x01 and such: learning to live without Ted and "on his own"? (by 4x05 he's moved into his new apartment)
ted: rehab, pt one, learning to accept he is an addict? and learning to accept help / that he has friends / that he can live post-addiction?
[I think Emmett and Ted's arc together, and maybe their individual ones, don't strictly follow the episode structure, because I think they go more 4x03 to 4x08 ish, like, they have two arcs mid and late season, rather than the whole thing. but emmett and ted's storyline together is ted's amends.]
act two: 4x06 to 4x10
brian's arc: in a nutshell? the cancer arc
Brian begins at the peak of his career success (4x06 starts with the kinnetik launch) but then finds out his health is failing and has to face his own mortality
brian is struggling through cancer (being physically imperfect, facing up to the fact that he's not 21 anymore and that he's lost something else that was fundamental to his identity (his dick)
by the end, he's let justin in and once more is accepting justin's help, and also by the end, he's able to be hard and has come out of it
justin: the hollywood arc, sort of not really
Justin sort of doesn't have a full arc in act two of season 4... the hollywood stuff is percolating, but it's a narrative plot for Ben and Michael and Ben's jealousy, not Justin
He's mostly supporting Brian
He's also being woo'ed by Hollywood and Brett, when no one else in his life is paying attention
NOTE TO SELF: Give justin this insecurity about his career arc in your fic, here, while Brian is RECOVERING from cancer. Tie it into him going back to school and to Kinnetik?
Arguably Justin is lost in Act 2, not sure of his place (brian lies to him, then brian throws him out, then brett calls, then then then)
michael and ben: the hollywood arc and ben's jealousy over michael's success (and then Anthony) - while Ben doesn't cheat and is honest, he isn't honest about how he's struggling with his own failure as Michael experiences success
debbie: vic's death, as well as everbody dealing with this obvs (her fight with vic is in 4x06 and his death is at the end of it)
ted: his feelings for blake coming to a head, basically? maybe? 4x06, then 07 is where blake says "we can't do this"
lindsay (and Mel): sam and that betrayal
Emmett: mostly a supporting character. until 4x09 when he meets Drew.
as Lindsay and Mel are falling apart, Ted and Emmett are reconciling
act three: 4x11 to 4x14 (maybe 5x01) - the liberty ride
Brian's arc: accepting what you can't change
Brian is once again struggling to accept he won't be able to "get better" or "go back", which culminates with him doing the liberty ride, lost, physically broken (literally) and feeling very much alone because Michael just got MARRIED and justin is in LA.
BUT. Brian, with the determination to do it FOR HIMSELF and also to GET BACK TO JUSTIN keeps going and is happy about it. michael supports him on that ride but his GOAL is to get back to justin, FOR HIS OWN SAKE
He also throws Pendergrast out (figuratively) and then fixes the ride himself, because he knows who he is in his career? and he can't go back to being who he was pre-3x14
the thing he has trouble accepting is that people move on -- michael did, does, and Brian by 4x13 has realized that he's lost him. by the end of 4x14 he's realized he's lost Justin, too.
justin's arc: hollywood. sort of
Justin is finding his feet and being excited about new career opportunities in LA and genuinely wanting to "spread his wings" so to speak, building a new self
after having a full act feeling "lost", arguably, he's onto "change the things you can" instead of "accept the things you can't".
he's pulling away from Brian as Brian's fighting to stand and survive (alone, because he has to do it alone)
emmett: has the drew thing, and deciding not to lie even if he loves drew, thing
ted: reconciles his friendship with emmett and realizes he's gotten the pieces of his life back that he wanted
ben and michael: choose to get married, support hunter, and be a family.
lindsay and mel: realise and choose to split up
deb: mostly a supporting character for the others now that she's forgiven herself over the fight with vic. supports brian while brian is depressed. supports michael and ben. has carl. etc.
