Wednesday, August 21: The Doomsday Kingdom, "Silent Kingdom"

Leif Edling couldn’t help himself: he claimed more than once that he was burned out on the frosty doom metal he pioneered with Candlemass and was ready to move on to something else, but most of his occasional ventures outside that iconic band didn’t stray too far from the blueprint.  The Doomsday Kingdom certainly didn’t try to be anything other than doom metal- hell, it was right there in their name- and “Silent Kingdom” opened their one self-titled full-length with churning guitars, dramatic vocals and a slightly rock and roll groove.  And even if it was a smidge faster than most traditional doom, a lot of Candlemass’ most famous material ran at around the same tempo, so Edling was really working in his comfort zone.  Which was fine in itself, since the bassist knew this sound better than anyone, and “Silent Kingdom” was the work of experts even if it mostly served to illustrate that Edling might as well have just stuck with his primary band.

#real talk the Rapunzel and Elsa storylines in KH3 really fucked me up bc Rapunzel is who Sora was before he failed to gain the power of waking and Elsa is everything (he feels like) he has failed at (bc he can't save her/reach her/fix her problems)

^^ Previous tags because I really appreciate this reading and viewed it the same way.

And it fits, too- when you hold up the different story arcs to each other. Rapunzel is a joyful story of someone's life beginning and departing from chains- a more straightforward departure of the hero onto their journey. Whilst Elsa starts with a fall from grace to reach her truest self. And even then, after her song and transformation about "Letting it go," she still isolates. She's not entirely free yet, despite her grab at it. It's complex, she doesn't have a clear cut journey all the way until the end where she realizes she's never going to start healing until she allows herself to love and receive love.

And that's not *been* Sora's journey, so seeing Elsa's arc from the outside looking in, he only sees the damage she does to herself. He doesn't realize why someone would deny themselves love and happiness because he's the Anna-type, the Rapunzel-type, the go getter, the person who desires connection and open communication. He doesn't see the internal conflict that makes up 90% of the journey of the Elsa types. The voices that say someone is a monster, undeserving of love and support, the constant scrambling for self sufficiency, the fear of rejection and misunderstanding. The belief that goes something like "if they knew what I really was, they'd change their tune. They'd drop me like it's nothing."

Anyway yeah, the Elsa/Riku parallels were so tight, holy cow. There's a reason why Sora seemed to imprint so heavily upon Elsa as soon as he meets her, and if you didn't get it at first, they hammer it in later by just having Sora do KH1 flashbacks for the player. The ice wall... the closed door to Kingdom Hearts... ooo. Frozen world was not the funnest to play in, but oooo, if it didn't have some lovely summation and foreshadowing of Riku's journey. And Larxene's comments reflecting her initial appearance in CoM (which, mind you, consisted of Sora going to Castle Oblivion to find Riku, only to have his memories twisted into thinking he was there to save Naminé):

CoM: Larxene: "Must you insist on playing the hero?"

KH3: Larxene: (In response to "I just wanted to know why she was so sad.") "And how is it any of your business? Read the room, kiddo."

And...

Sora: "I won't let [Elsa's] heart fall to darkness!"

Larxene: "It's her choice to make, not yours. I'm starting to understand why she gave you the cold shoulder. You wanna help her? Then stop trying to be her hero! Let her figure out things her own way!"

She plays the same role in both games: to essentially paint Sora as a clingy loser who rubs his nose into the business of others he doesn't understand. So, you can kind of put the rest together in how it also reflects Sora's KHCoM-KH2 journey of following Riku around despite the latter's insistence on pulling away.

Oh, and if you want more cool parallels with Arendelle stuff and Riku, check out the weirdly dramatic cutscene of post-final boss, where the boss gathers into this swirling explosion of darkness and Marshmallow steps in front of Sora and shields him from the onslaught, framed in a silhouette of light at he does so before getting swept away. Sound familiar to any pivotal KH3 cutscene near its climax? I obviously only noticed it in retrospect, but was still like "ok... that was weirdly cinematic" when I played through KH3 for the first time. There might have been a reason for that!

In KH2, Sora learns Riku tends to self-isolate and try to deal with his pain on his own... KH3 revisits this, even highlights it by paralleling Elsa the queen of self-isolation with Riku… then Riku self-isolates again when he realizes Kairi is gonna shoot her shot with Sora. Sora notices Riku’s behavior and naturally thinks something might be wrong/Riku’s hiding pain from him, not buying that Riku’s fine or should be left alone here… But Sora doesn’t know WHY Riku is in pain. He’s staring at Riku, wondering what it could be, why Riku wants to be alone again now. Sora can’t figure it out… And it’s because . Riku is in love with him. But Riku thinks Sora is in love with Kairi, and he just wants Sora to be happy. So Riku will keep this to himself forever. He will suffer in silence forever as long as Sora is happy. But Sora’s not happy if Riku’s not happy. But Riku can’t tell him

Pure Vanilla couldn’t believe it. He had arrived to the Creme Republic along with the other heroes and leaders to discuss the threat of the Beasts.

Yet he was being..turned away?

Cookie Union Officer: “That is right. Unfortunately, you were not invited and neither was your companion.”

White Lily Cookie: “I’m sorry, Pure Vanilla Cookie. I’ve tainted your reputation…”

Y/N Cookie: “Come on, can’t you make an exception? White Lily is not the same as Dark Enchantress Cookie.”

Cookie Union Officer: “Forgive me, Great Y/N Cookie, but haven’t you heard? The Vanilla Kingdom’s membership in the Union has been suspended due to ties with our enemy. As much as I hate going against your word, the Union has made their decision final on this matter.”

Y/N Cookie: “I…er…”

Clotted Cream Cookie: “….”

Golden Cheese Cookie: “….”

Pure Vanilla Cookie: “Y/N Cookie, please. You are also aware that the two are different, don’t you?”

Cookie Union Officer: “I’ll have to ask you to vacate the premises…”

Cookie Union Soldier: The forces of the Beasts. We’re doomed…argh! They’re cutting through our defenses!

Y/N Cookie: “Crumbs, we have to fall back to the last defense line!”

Dumpling Cookie: “Go! We’ll cover you!”

Y/N Cookie: “Come on, Cookies! We’re pulling back!”

Salsa Cookie: “They’re already here! Brace yourselves!”

Crowned Cupcake Cookie: “No Beast can ever put me away from you!”

Cookie Union Soldier: “Too powerful…ugh!”

The walls set up to protect the perimeter are brought down with a mighty force. You and the others brace yourselves for the impending attack.

Arrows fire right at Salsa Cookie, who did her best to dodge or deflect them, but it came at the cost of exhausting her. This left her with just a large enough blind spot for an arrow to strike her side, making her yell out in pain.

Burning Spice Cookie rushed at Crowned Cupcake, trading blows with their weapons. Both having a rush with their strikes, but share the same goal of bringing down the opponent before them. Crowned tried as she might, but one powerful strike was enough to send Crowned Cupcake flying back and landing next to you.

Dumpling Cookie, being left with no choice, readied her dual chopsticks.

A flash of purple light from amidst the smoke was all the warning she got before Silent Salt Cookie rushed at her with their blade, blocking them just in the nick of time.

You needed a bit to try and drag back Salsa and Crowned to safety, but that was barely enough before Dumpling herself was pushed back towards you.

Dumpling Cookie: “Go, Y/N Cookie. Run!”

Get it? :D

Y/N Cookie: “I won’t leave you!”

Mystic Flour Cookie: “Then allow me to do it for you. Fall.”

The three cookies before you started to cough as they turned pale.

Y/N Cookie: “No! What are you doing!”

Shadow Milk Cookie: “Lookie lookie, I found my Cookie!”

Y/N Cookie: “I’ll stop you! No matter what it takes!”

Shadow Milk Cookie: “Ooh, so scary~! Come on, Y/N Cookie. Your Guardians can’t save you this time~! Isn’t this just so fun to finally meet uninterrupted~?”

Mystic Flour Cookie: “This was a long time coming, Y/N Cookie. Futile as always to try and fight it…”

Burning Spice Cookie: “How incredibly BORING! Why did I expect a princess to entertain me with that effort!”

Silent Salt Cookie: “….”

Eternal Sugar Cookie: “Finally, my love! Oh, how I’ve waited all this time! I can way better than a dainty princess!”

Y/N Cookie: “You-“

Pure Vanilla Cookie: “No….”

Y/N Cookie: “What the?”

You turned to your right to see Pure Vanilla Cookie, his head down as he muttered his words. Was he watching this whole time?

His head suddenly snapped up and for the first time in ever, he was angry. He was very angry…

Pure Vanilla Cookie: “YOU WILL ALL REGRET COMING HERE! I WILL DESTROY ALL OF YOU!!!”

I will always remember cookie run kingdom they were all so cute😉

(Lmk Wukong) Wow you are just so tricky and can be obnoxious, as well as cruel however something tells him that's a front. Wukong eventually gets you to open up to him in your courting period and he learns about imprisonment and how it broke you that dispite your vast knowledge people still lied to themselves. Wukong hated how you were taken for granted and decided to ask you for another story making you fly into performer mode, acting eccentric and imaginative. Not to mention your constant story telling reminds him of macaque but somehow way more sinister.

(NR Wukong) Oh Wukong adores you more then anything in the world, you were always Quirky and imaginative so it's fun spending time with you. Your loud, silly, and full of chaos your his dream gal getting into all sorts of trouble and mayhem together. Dispite You both would share depressive days together because of you remembering your imprisonment in the silver tree and Wukong's disappointment in the world around him. So you cheer him and yourself up with some fun story telling about your handsome husband and his beautiful wife you.

(HIB Wukong) Oh jeez, Wukong thinks you're a whole ass clown literally, with your tricks and dramatic ass storytelling. It gets worse when you involve Luier and Silly Girl, often inviting the two to cause a bit of mischief with you. You can be a bit of a nuisance to Wukong but he learned about your backstory once, and well help you find some kind of peace and help you stay calm. He really loves you and your stories just has a hard time showing it. You can be a bit childish and cartoonish you can get serious and scary at the drop of your hat, your the only one who can trick and deceive your hubby but if anyone else dare to do that, well may God have mercy on there souls.

(MKR Wukong) You would drive him insain with your tricks and riddles, it pisses him off sometimes. Not to mention if Wukong were to make you angry well that's doomsday for him, you both would fight constantly but with this you both began to open up to each other. Sharing all the bad things that happened to you both especially the fact that you were both trapped by people stronger then you. Granted you both still taunt each other but over time you both grow closer and you get kinda kinder to him. Wukong deep down loves you even with your dramatic and eccentricity and besides what's wrong with a bit of chaos.

(Netflix Wukong) He always loves hearing your stories like a small child listening to your narration. Your both causing chaos and be a force to be reckon with especially on the battlefield, as we taunt and mess with your enemies and love to manipulate anyone who mess with you and your husband. You are smart enough to keep your cruelty hidden from Wukong especially when it's triggered by your wrath. You love to lovingly annoy Wukong with Riddles and Tricks but nothing horrible, just inconvenient. Your Wukong's partner in crime no matter what.

(BMW Wukong) Wow, he understands you better than anybody, especially with the whole being trapped it's a touchy subject, and you would get angry because of it. However, your husband is endlessly patient with you and loves to join you and causing chaos, not to mention your both story tellers. In fact you would always add flare and pizzazz to all his stories making your husband sound greater then ever, your husband loves your intelligence and imagination and he wouldn't change you for anything.

(Destined one) Yeah...the Destined one is the last demon to ever fall for your Deceit and Riddles. The Destined one very much loves your intelligence and all knowing knowledge but it's the fact that you, constantly Lie to him and try to deceive him. The Destined one is the only one who can come you down when you suddenly fly into a fit of rage, but the Destined one makes for a good listening ears for you and your stories. He also sympathies with you and tells you how his older brother Wukong was trapped under a mountain, and he becomes supporting system for you.

(Lotmk Wukong) Oh boi he honestly feels bad for you especially learning how you were trapped in a tree for a whole millennia. You can pretend to not be bothered by the whole thing but he's also someone who you can't easily lie too you know, Wukong would actively sit and listen to you tell your side of the stories. Dispite that he's sometimes easy for you to manipulate and you drag him to participate on in your storytelling, and eccentric behavior that would make Wukong's head spin at times but at least it's never a dull moment.
