FF16 friends, I need your help...
For writing purposes, I'd like to know your thoughts and headcanons on how it feels like to be in the Deadlands. Like, what does it feel like to be in a place with zero aether.
We've seen plenty of what too much aether does with aether floods. But we haven't spent a lot of time in places with none.
We've seen zones affected by the blight like the continent of Ash and the start of the game. The only place with zero aether we visited consisted of a corridor leading up to our first tower, north of Eastpool. Apart from the clear visuals, I don't recall Clive and Jill commenting on anything else.
Even in Cid's hideaway, what we are told is how it affects agriculture and drinking water, but nothing on how it affects people, not even from Tarja. In Clive's hideaway we had mentions for Obelos' boat and how the water was destroying the wood, but again, nothing about the people. They looked to be fine.
Either I missed a dialogue or it is assumed that there is no ill effect to living in the Deadlands, granted you have the means (and Mid's inventions).
So please, share your thoughts. 👀💖

Finished reading The Deadlands series by Skye Melki-Wegner, here's a few rough sketches of Eleri (& Agostron?) I did. Would love to revisit this design soon + the rest of the characters!

I was doing some introspection on the pairings I kept gravitating towards and decided it's due to the key persistent traits of the characters the players choose when they aren't GM.
Andy: insecure (Corazon, Chancey, Edvard, Purvis are all constantly seeking external validation)
Jane: powerful (Prudence, Zillah, Margot, Garnet all vary in morality, all could kill me easily)
Mike: cognitive dissonance (Egbert a dumb paladin, Barnaby an elitist criminal, Silas a cowboy layman afraid of horses)
Luke: innocent (Dob and Delacy are sponges to the world around them, and that leads to impulsive and morally questionable choices)
Ellen: earnest (puns aside, Merilwen, Lilith, and now Edie all have a weight of sincere commitment to the people (or animals) around them, rather than being self-absorbed or hell bent on a specific goal)
Johnny: world-weary (Kazamir and Nate are both aged above the people around them and wise to the world they live in)
I'm keen to hear other thoughts. I'm not really across the guest episodes, so I don't have info on the one-shot characters. I know Andy once said something about enjoying playing pathetic men once, but I love all his soft, nervous lads.

""They say a place exists in Oblivion where the paths between planes are thin and easy to navigate. That no Prince rules this realm, and mortal and Daedra alike are free to do whatever they please. They call this place Fargrave."—Magister Therana"

An abundance of joy
It has been a very good writing year for me, as of this moment. I am incredibly grateful. And a bit gobsmacked, honestly.
Being a writer of any sort means a lot of rejection. That kind of thing never makes it into the public realm, for me. I howl in private, to my friends, which is how it should be. Certain things aren’t for public view, and I know how to keep a secret better than most.
That said, I firmly believe that joy is to be shared always. Readily and with abandon, because it’s uplifting. When my friends do cool things, I am elated. When my friends make amazing art, I am delighted. When my friends are their brilliant selves, it is a privilege to witness this.
This month, so far, I have achieved several things. And I am still reeling a bit, because we’re barely two weeks into the year.
Yesterday, I found out that a second poem of mine has been nominated for the Rhysling Award. It’s one that appeared in The Deadlands, and it’s called “Five of Cups Considers Forgiveness.” I don’t often talk about why I write certain poems, because it’s generally irrelevant. If a poem makes someone feel something, I’ve done it right. But this one, I wrote in an effort to understand, and I wanted it to feel like a lighthouse in the dark, at the end. Because we have all, at one point, mourned the living. But that feeling isn’t final. There’s still so much beauty in the world. Grief doesn’t get the last word.
I also recently sold a poem to Uncanny magazine, which you’ll get to read sometime this year. It’s called “The High Priestess Writes a Love Letter to The Magician.” (Are you sensing a tarot theme? Good. You’ve been paying attention. I won’t talk about why I wrote it, but a part of it is a letter love/thank you to the power of words and how the save and help us save ourselves. I’m beyond excited for y’all to read it.
(I also have a poem from Uncanny up for the Rhysling Award, which you can read here, too. It’s called “Knight of Wands, Six of Swords.”)
To round this out, at the beginning of this month, Uncanny published yet another poem of mine. “Six of Swords Becomes The Emperor” is free to read, right now. This one, not unlike The Deadlands poem, is one of strength, even when things seem dark. It’s a reminder that there is power in hope, that we’ve never really helpless. It’s a call, too, to let the past go—it holds no power over you, in this moment.
**clears throat** I feel very lucky. Truly. I have been writing poetry since I was ten. I’m 41. I’ve worked hard and learned with every poem I’ve written, regardless of whether or not it’s been published. The trick is writing well is to write more and to read more. I have an analytical eye now that 23-year-old me did not. I’ve been enjoying playing with form lately to see how it affects rhythm. I look forward to getting even better with every piece.
But at the heart of it all, I am beyond honored. And if you have read my work and liked it, thank you. If you have read more work and shared it, thank you. If you have done a happy dance with me when I’ve had good news, thank you.

sliding in five days late with cold starbucks and an emotional support crunchwrap -- i wanna hear about deadlands (from the wip name game) pls 🥺👉👈
I haven't talked about this one for a while so we probably weren't following each other back then! It's a western-esque fantasy that was inspired by the old Calamity Jane musical and also the Ballad of Tam Lin.
I do think I need to change it more because it's still too similar to the musical but! The basic plot would remain the same. Genevieve moves from the big city out to the frontier and ends up getting involved with the magical culture of the area via the grumpy resident mage, Margherita.
In the current story (as in the musical) Genevieve is a singer, but I was thinking about making her a doctor instead because that would very reasonably put her more at odds with Margherita - who currently does all of the medicine in the area - and would also really highlight the anti-magic attitude of the East versus the pro-magic attitude of the West.
They are also lebsians, of course.
