This story is not a fairy tale, so it should not start with "once a long time ago." Some say the events that happened are legends, others that are true and shaped the world. One thing is certain things that happened a few survivors lived to tell, proves popped up here and there. But in the center of this mystery were two boys. One remained and the other disappeared. Fate parted them. Xie Lian was left alone. Some say he spent the last five years searching for Hua Cheng. He refused to believe that his best friend was dead. There was no proof that he was dead no body no blood nothing. His house was not ransacked it was as if Hua Cheng just disappeared in thin air.
The stronger force was at work here, the force from another plane of existence. Once in a century this force would awake and search for compatible humans, to carry its mark, its power, or one could say its disease that will plunder among humans. This time force spotted the perfect victim. Hua Cheng. The boy was only eighteen years old, and easily captured. Held deep in darkness in the center of the force in the belly of the beast. For years, till his body and soul soaked up all the power..he was changed. No humanity was left in him, but the force was not counting on one thing. Hua Cheng never forgot who he was. Who he is. And where he lived or who his friends are.
Another failed experiment and the force that took him wanted him dead now, for he could not be manipulated or used. Hua Cheng fought back he didn't want to die. Somehow he managed to fight the darkness that held him captive, his silver scimitar killed his captor and Hua Cheng soaked his rest of powers.
A first immortal a first vampire. He was perfect, he was resistant to the sun, relentless, intelligent, alluring, fast, and agile. But there was one huge disadvantage blood lust the thirst was killing him. He was so new to this, and his mistakes cost humanity peaceful nights and safe evenings. Vampires that he sired were weaker yet strong enough to kill humans. They were restricted to darkness, silver and wooden stakes could kill them. Holly water and sun worked just as well. Silver crosses and garlic.
Hua Cheng was back in his hometown doubting that anyone would recognize him. He was an adult now with long black hair. With an eye patch over his right eye. The only thing that could kill him is fire and disposing of his ashes. Or killing a butterfly while he sleeps over the day, they say silver butterflies hold this vampire's soul....

Ripples in the water
(Crossposted on Ao3)
Fate is cruel. Or maybe not as cruel as He Xuan once thought.
Or… Heavenly officials never reincarnate, until two do.
He Xuan didnt know when it started.
It began a few millennia ago, he thinks, when he started looking for his face in passersby. When he began to yearn of the feeling of the wind on his face, bringing him back to those days when he’d be around him.
Shi Qingxuan
He Xuan is a liar. And he knows it. He lied to himself many centuries ago when he killed Shi Wudu. He lied to himself when he turned himself away from Shi Qingxuan. And he lies to himself now, telling himself that he did the right thing. The noble thing.
Sometimes He Xuan envies Crimson Rain Sought Flower, Hua Cheng. Because he got his happy ending. He was able to hold his love close to him, because he isn’t left alone with his thoughts at the bottom of the sea.
Other times he hates him. He hates the look of pity he gives him when he comes to visit. He hates the way he got rid of his debt, telling him that he shouldn’t worry about it any longer. And he hates the way that he sees what he and Shi Qingxuan could’ve been in Hua Cheng and Xie Lian.
Qi Rong the green ghost visits him too. Still the same untamed beast he used to be, but different. He Xuan thinks he’s imagined it.
He Xuan stops going to his home years after the incident. He tells Hua Cheng that it’s because he has other things, more important things, to do. Not acknowledging the way Hua Cheng’s face contorts slightly at his lies, the way he looks at him sadly when he pulls out excuse after excuse of why he won’t go back to his manor. Stubbornly refusing to acknowledge that he wants someone to go back home to. A family. Although He Xuan would never admit it.
Time is like the ripples in water. Or that's what He Xuan thinks at least.
If you throw a stone into a lake, the water will part, ripples forming from the intrusion, reaching the very shores of the lake, albeit much smaller than at the center. But soon, the water will be still once more. Much like time He Xuan muses. Just as he threw a ‘stone’ into the heavenly realm those years ago, along with Crimson Rain Sought Flower and his majesty, the three realms are once again at peace.
—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He Xuan doesnt know when he started returning to the sea for comfort. Something he did when he first became a ghost. Back in those days he’d relish in the way the salt water stung the wounds from enemies, using it as a reminder of what he was fighting for, who.
After he met Shi Qingxuan, however, he stopped visiting the sea. Telling himself that he didnt have time for it, although looking back he thinks it’s because he thought that if he returned to the sea he would allow his resolve to be washed away. Allowing himself to forgive himself for his guilty conscience.
Now, long after the Shi Qingxuans passing, he returns to the salt ridden waters. He doesnt always go to swim, Sometimes he just watches the waves. Watches how they dance with the shore, leaving and returning, rhythmically almost.
He Xuan likes it at night, when he doesn't have to worry about the noise of humans. When he can breathe out in peace.
He Xuan does eventually return to the sea, beckoned by its rhythmic calls. Calls only he can hear, he thinks.
—---------------------------------
It isn't until many decades of this pattern, that he sees others hear the call.
On that day he was annoyed. He was trying to swim, but was constantly interrupted by bits of plastic flowing towards his face or the marine life dragging him to help their kin (who were bothered by a similar problem). He left the sea angry that day, wondering why humans insisted on being so wasteful.
As he left the ocean, he noticed that the sun was out, much to his dismay. He let out a small sigh, dragging the large pile of plastics he’d gathered. Wondering why the beach was so quiet (the beaches were typically bustling with people and fairly loud during the day). Good, he thought, enjoying the quiet as he made his way to the big trash can at the meeting of the beach and road.
Or he was, until a gruff voice called out to him, “Hey,” the voice paused as He xuan turned his head, shooting a glare to whoever dared to bother him, “The Wind and Water master College marine biology class has reserved this beach, leave.”
He Xuan froze, not hearing the words that the man said, only seeing his face. Shi Wudu. He was confused, heavenly officials could not reincarnate, so how was he here-
His thoughts were cut off as another figure appeared in front of him, “Brother, can’t you see that he was doing what we came here to do?” A voice he could only dream of said, “He’s no doubt been at this for many hours, and I don’t think he wants you to harangue him.” ‘Shi Wudu’ gave He Xuan a glare, turning away from the two of them and walking to the rest of the class.
He Xuan’s knight in shining armor turns around, and He Xuan sucks back a gasp, it's really them. “Are you okay?” They ask, moving to take some of the plastic, “I’m sorry about my brother, he’s really pissy in the mornings.” they said, giving him a small smile, “Shall we take these to the trash?” They asked, causing He Xuan to shake out of his trance, nodding.
Since that day, He Xuan went to the sea in the mornings, waiting for Shi Qingxuan. He was confused at the situation, but was happy to see them (not so much Shi wudu). Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan would stay in the shallow waters gathering bits of plastic and litter while engaging in small talk.
In those talks He Xuan gathered that Shi Qingxuan was studying to become a marine biologist, and was very passionate about the environment. He also learned that this Shi Qingxuan had a slight disdain for their brother, which he’d later find out was because this Shi Wudu didn’t accept his gender identity and sexuality, something he’d only let slip out in a moment of anger, apologizing shortly after.
He Xuan began to look forward to those mornings, enjoying their small talk, even yearning for more.
A month or so later Shi Qingxuan stopped showing up, along with the entire class. It wasn't until a month later that He Xuan saw them again.
--------------------------------------------------------------
He Xuan continued to drag bits of plastic out of the sea, not caring when the beach became crowded once more. Irritation ate at him, why did Shi Qingxuan leave, he wondered.
In the weeks that followed the Shi Qingxuan’s disappearance, He Xuan ruminated about the life that they once lived, many lifetimes ago as he laid on the beach.
Many days of this cycle went on. Swim, find plastics, help the animals, look for Shi Qingxuan, rinse, repeat. The days dragged on and one day when he laid there ruminating he fell asleep. Seeing his Shi Qingxuan in his dreams, seeing the heavenly windmaster call the winds to his beck and call, smiling at him, calling him that stupid nickname that he now longed for, “Ming Xiong.”
When he awoke from his slumber he saw the moon high in the sky, and he let out a small curse, how could he fall asleep at a time like this. When he’s supposed to be waiting for Shi Qingxuan, he wondered before scolding himself, this Shi Qingxuan is not his Shi Qingxuan.
With that thought he sat up, biting back a sigh, as he watched the waves in their back and forth dance with the shore.
After the moon sank in the sky he decided that he needed to clear his mind. He needed to get in the water. He stood up, walking towards the sea, stopping where the waves met the shore, allowing the waves to brush against him. He waited there until the sun came up.
When the sun came up he let out a sigh for the nth time that morning, and turned around, abandoning his march to the sea. Only to stop in surprise, Shi Qingxuan stood before him, not his Shi Qingxuan, but a ripple in the waters of time. Fate is a cruel thing He Xuan thinks as he looks to Shi Qingxuan sadly.
Shi Qingxuan held out their hand to He Xuan, their dress pants quickly becoming soaked through in sea water.
He Xuan stood their for a moment, suddenly sent back to when the two were in the heavenly court, didn’t Shi Qingxuan do something like this back then too he wondered. Remembering how Shi Qingxuan pulled him up by his hand upon their first meeting when he’d ‘fallen.’
He Xuan shook his head for a moment, ridding himself of such thoughts, grabbing Shi Qingxuan’s hand while refusing to make eye contact.
Shi Qingxuan sighed, “He Xiong,” he called out, as the two walked to a bench on the beach, “Why won’t you look at me?”
He Xuan, sat there wondering, why won’t he look at them? His Shi Qingxuan is long gone, yet he clings to their ghost, oh the irony he thinks. He Xuan turns his head, finally looking Shi Qingxuan in the eyes, raising a hand to his face.
‘Soft’ he thinks as he looks into their clear bright eyes.
If this were him centuries ago he would have killed himself than touched his ‘enemy’ like this, but this is not then he thinks.
He can be selfish, he thinks to himself, leaning down, pressing their lips together.
Yeah, He Xuan can be selfish, living the life he didnt know he longed for back then now, in the modern era, with this Shi Qingxuan.
He Xuan spent many years cursing fate as he swam at the bottom of the sea, seeing fate as a cruel being who never corrected him in his misguided thoughts. He sees now that fate isn’t quite as cruel as he once thought.
I love them so much

Hua Cheng's Name - “A Spring’s Night under the Joyous Rain” 《春夜喜雨》 by Du Fu. 杜甫
This is possibly the poem that inspired Hua Cheng's name according to C fans. So here it goes~
This is a Tang Dynasty poem written by the poet Du Fu. He was staying in Chengdu for two years and his life had been greatly unsettled by war, famine and politics. Du Fu had been involved in farming and was staying with the villages. According to historical records, there was a famine in the surrounding area and the prices of rice had increased, and people started eating each other. Hence, when Du Fu heard the wound of rain, he was overwhelmed with joy.
好雨知时节,当春乃发生。
The useful rain knows when it should fall, it’s the time when spring’s about to come.
随风潜入夜,润物细无声。
It flows with the winds and springs and arrives silently at night, nourishing everything in silence.
野径云俱黑,江船火独明。
The fields are dark on a rainy night, only the lights on the river boats sparkled on their own.
晓看红湿处,花重锦官城。
At day break, the flowers moist with rain are red and delicate, entire Brocade City was covered in a sea of flowers.
(Chengdu was previously known as the Brocade City 锦官城 as they were famous for making Sichuan Brocade in the past. You can read more about it here.)
My analysis - TGCF related.
Hua Cheng’s name comes from the last line in the poem. Firstly, lets talk about the actual imagery of the line. The repeated use of “rain” and “flowers” in this poem seems like the muse inspiration Hua Cheng’s title “Crimson/Blood Rain Sought Flower 血雨探花”. And in the poem, it almost seems as thought the rain in the first two lines do 'find' the flowers in the last sentence. The flowers in this poem likely symbolise Xie Lian since he does carry a sword and a flower.
And boy, the relief and joy when that happens! You can practically sense the poet’s relief in the last line. I imagine this was probably what Hua Cheng was feeling whenever he was reunited with Xie Lian after so much hardship! And the poem ends on a beautiful note with a city full of flowers. Hua Cheng’s name does mean Flower City if you break it down literally so it's kind of fitting.

Centuries after the debacle that happened up in Heavens. After Heavenly officials refused to fulfill their part of the deal, Crimson Rain Sought Flower was not defeated. Arrogance was charged with a warm lick of flame, a flame which ate all their temples, and cut them out of their spiritual power. And rendered them off their followers. The Wraith butterfly shall not be denied, he will not allow them to mock him. However helpless he was as mortal, now he was a formidable force like a coming tide or uncontrollable flame. A devil ruling the Ghost City.
Idly sitting on his Divan a long comfortable seat from which Hua Cheng was stirred by a few of his silver butterflies that have returned, his pupil dilating at the report that the small creature brought home..
"You did well" he angels his vambraces which had engraved butterflies, small silver insects melted into those engravings. They became one with butterfly partners. There was a human a lunar eclipse child, similar to him who was born under the Star of Solitude. That star made let's just say his life more than just turbulent, it made his life bouncing from one extreme to another.
Behind his barrier and his side of the border, before he steps before this young man, Hua Cheng took the appearance of a young man clad in red, not older than twenty-two. There was a trace of a strange aura on this lad as if he was sealed away most of his life. Is that why he walks like that? Like lost or confused.
"Young lord? Are you lost?" With a sing-song voice, Hua addresses the man before himself. "It is dangerous to be out and about, on the road when it's the night of a ghost festival"

what people don't get about hualian is that they're literally like. jock and alternative art student. xie lian lives like a frat boy (mattress on the floor and nothing else in his room, no standards for his own well-being, can't cook and ends up eating what could be classified as biohazards) and is really enthusiastic about fighting as a hobby. meanwhile hua cheng rocks up to the function in his cunty little outfits every day of the week, bells on his boots and the red eyeliner slayed, obviously has taste but is soooo in love with his boyfriend who only ever wears cargo shorts and the most fucked up questionable hoodies you've ever seen. hua cheng wants xie lian to have nice things but it's always like. "babe i promise it's no trouble can we please get you a bedframe??" nd xie lian is obviously so enamored with his cool alt boyfriend who wears skirts sometimes and never misses a beat on a bitchy comment that's just the way it is. basically if your hualian concept doesn't have hua cheng as the hot goth gf you just don't get it

❝ I understand your everything. Your courage, your despair; your kindness, your pain; your hatred, your malice; your intelligence, your foolishness. If I could, I would offer myself for you to use me as your stepping stone, your bridge to cross the river, the bones for you to step on as you climb, a villain to be sliced by a thousand blades. But I know you won’t. ❞
An infamous Ghost King whose power and worship is said to be so great as to be able to cover the sky with one hand. As one of the Four Great Calamities (the title given to the highest ranking ghosts between the three realms) Hua Cheng is known as the richest and most dangerous. One learns to fear the silver butterflies and rains of blood for they are the heralds of his presence. He's also known as the Scourge of Heaven after ascending to defeat 33 Gods. Hua Cheng was given the title Crimson Rain Sought Flower because upon his first arrival as a king, he wiped out a high ranking ghost’s nest with blood rain, only stopping on the roadside to shade a small white flower with his umbrella. As a person, not much is known about Hua Cheng except the few that have encountered him with a certain scrap God named Xie Lian, to whom he appears in an intelligent, charismatic, and gentle light. On his own he is not outright evil, seemingly neutral as he neither undertakes altruistic actions nor engages in evil or barbaric acts unless he has cause to.
Described as exceptionally tall, thin, with skin white as snow. He most noticeably wears a yuanling pao robe red as maple leaves, with silver bells tied about his boots and various intricately carved silver pieces like vambraces, a belt, and jewelry inspired by the traditions of the Miao ethnic minority. On his waist is his feared weapon E-ming, a silver scimitar with a glowing red eye, said to be carved out of his own eye. This scimitar is the fear of his enemies due to it’s exceptional viciousness; able to remember any whom it cuts, and capable of making them bleed again from a distance. He also makes use of silver-colored deathly spirit butterflies, whom he can control to attack others, bind them in silk webs, or to spy on. Although capable of shapeshifting in many forms, Hua Cheng prefers the appearance of a young lord or his true form whereupon a black eyepatch hangs heavy upon his right eye.

"I have to show off my powers to someone. All others already know the meaning of silver wrath butterflies." Thinking for a moment and changing his cup of tea for a jug with blossom vine, he took a swing before speaking again.
"The story about the dragon is a famous tale of the common people. Once upon a time, there was a tribe of river demons and a war god named Mingye. People believed that he was the God and he was worshiped and loved. Indeed a beautiful creature, same as his wife. And yes his wife was the leader of that small river demon tribe. Later, he revealed that he was a god but not human he was a great silver dragon. He took one scale off his chest the scale that protect his heart. 'That Dragon scale artifact' he planted into his pregnant wife to protect her and his unborn child. That girl that was born is the first and direct descendant of the dragon line, later others came from her bloodline. All her descendants were females with extraordinary physical powers, and great strategists, and some who were lucky were strong and had also the ability to heal. In that way, they inherited both ancestral powers." While speaking he played with a jug in his hand before drinking the rest of its content. He liked to read and to visit different places to learn different myths and legends even when he was one of those legends. Some human villages still had his temples, and they still worshiped him, but for the best of luck, some temples worshiped him and Xie Lian together.
He softly nods. "Yes there are ghosts that can shapeshift but most of them can be seen through. Hair and palm lines are the most difficult to imitate to blend in with humans. Also, cold limbs are something no one can mask. You don't feel how cold my palm is because you are a ghost as well. But if a human would touch me they would know"
"Why humans whenever someone mentions revenge got so conflicted? Is that how those truly righteous felt? Is that how Xie Lian felt after all the misfortune his heart had to bear? "For me, revenge was something necessary even when the person in whose name I took revenge never asked to be revenge. I still did it. I don't care what happens to me or who hates me, all they can do is hate me and talk. No harm can come out of that. New freshly chosen Heaven officials you can call them juniors, or future Gods led by Xie Lian's best friend, chased Xie Lian from the spiritual field, unwilling to share even when there was enough space and even when Xie Lian got there first. Back then Xie Lian was still a prince in a war-torn country fighting for survival. He had nothing and he was starving so did his parents. He had to steal food to survive, and those officials found out about it and accused him. They use that to chase him off that spiritual field and to strip him of a chance to cultivate his spiritual energy. Mu Qing his best friend ignored and never defended Xie Lian, and yet Xie Lian never allowed me to harm that man, and I wanted to. I wanted to kill him where he stands." His anger could be felt like a crack of power in the air, together with his foul aura.
"I fought the Martial Gods and debated against the Civil Gods, resulting in their utter defeat. However, the gods refused to honor our agreement, pretending that the fight and the preceding agreement never took place. I just decided to help them fulfill their promise by burning down the 33 gods' temples in the human realm. This act caused an uproar and I got the moniker "Heaven's Scourge".
"My revenge didn't end there. Every time their followers built a new temple, I would burn that to the ground as well. Without temples and their followers losing faith in them, the gods slowly lost power and faded away, never to return."
Now if she was petty and wanting revenge he was too he did everything he could to revenge the one he loved without asking permission and in a way he did it for himself as well. Why she could not do the same for herself. Her powers just started to wake, her anger was a trigger and so he told her that emotions can reveal and help her understand her powers. He also explained to her that ghosts that serve him change so he has no idea about every single one, who they are, or what they do after. He was not even interested to know anyway.
"Since your former partner is a scumbag if you kill him there is a big chance that he will go to Heaven, but since Xie Lian is reforming that hole as we speak, he will get the justice that he didn't get in life"
@hana-akari
Sakura looked up at him, eyes full of amazement and wonder as he explained the meaning of the butterflies and his silver jewelry. Her fingers traced the detail of the butterfly shaped ornament in her hair. It was so detailed, and no doubt breathtaking looking. She has not seen her reflection since dying,
“I… I feel so honored you would gift me with something so precious.”
She really didn’t understand why he would, Sakura didn’t feel all that special to be wearing something with such deep meaning but she did feel happy he did view her worthy of it. Even if she didn’t,
“My… My family is said to be born from the scales of a great dragon god. Born into the world to be protectors, and symbols of good luck. My father used to tell me that that's how I was born with pink hair and unnatural strength. When I was alive, I was strong enough to punch a hole straight through a mountain if I wanted to but now… I feel so weak.” It was then she realized that she had lost the cherry blossom necklace her father had given her when she died. Sakura’s hand was placed over the spot it used to hang, wondering what happened to it. It was probably burnt up with the rest of her body and turned into the silver bracelet she now wore. It made her a bit sad to know it was gone,
“I suppose that sort of legend sounds completely silly to you, as the Ghost King.” She softly laughed, “My family also hails for China. Well, half of it anyway. On my mother’s side.” It seems they had something small in common.
When Hue Cheng let out a burst of laughter, it brought a smile to her face. Her pretty green eyes seemed to sparkle a bit. Sakura found herself enjoying the sound of his laughter. It relaxed her, and filled her chest with warmth. It made her wish to make him laugh more. To help heal his heart, no matter how long it took, “I would, yes. Even if it’s something so small, I will miss eating. Mostly sweets, I was always weak to sweets.” She admitted with a small blush trying both the wine and the tea. Really she was trying a little of everything to savor things before she couldn’t anymore. She assumed after a while food, and drink will just taste bland and pointless to her but it seemed like he could still enjoy tea.
“A Dryad? Like the people from myths? They’re actually real?” Sakura’s eyes widened. She remembered reading all about forest dwellers as a small child. Wanting badly to believe such people existed. She once nearly got lost in the woods trying to find one, “She was as pretty as I thought one would be…” She softly wondered if someone would ever think she was that pretty, “Doesn’t she work for you? Shouldn’t you know about those who work for you?” Come to think of it, she seemed to be surrounded by pretty girls. She has only seen girls around the mansion. Not that she was one to judge, she just wondered why that is,
“So… There are beings here besides you that can change forms?” That means maybe in the future, she could too. Not that she would really want to without a reason. She liked how she looked, even if she did have some self esteem issues.
Her eyes lowered to their joined hands, his was so much larger than hers but it felt so nice to be held by his. Just thinking that made her blush a small bit, “He sounds like such a wonderful person… What you say is true, sometimes you must let go of those you love and it hurts but over time, the wound heals but you never stop loving them. Your story is both romantic as it is tragic. I wish I could do something to ease your pain.” He has been so kind and welcoming to her, she wished she could do something to repay him.
Sakura’s eyes snapped up to his face, a bit shocked at what he was suggesting, “Are… Are you saying I could get revenge on him?” She looked a little conflicted at first, until she thought about all the things he’s done to her, “He broke my heart…. Attempted to kill me… Called me degrading things… And it’s his fault I’m dead! He doesn't deserve to be happy!” The rush of emotions made her eyes glow a bit, her long hair flowed upward, and then suddenly a glass next to her shattered, snapping her out of it, “O-oh god, did I do that? I’m so sorry!” Sakura quickly grabbed a towel to clean the spilled wine. Mostly to prevent it from getting onto the pretty white dress he had gifted her. Was this some of the power she had? She didn’t know what happened, just a sudden rush and then the glass exploded,
“But… But if I kill him, won’t he just end up here? The last thing I want is to spend an eternity looking at him… Not that I was planning to kill him! Maybe… Rough him up a bit. Make it hard for him to sleep for the rest of his life. I highly doubt whatever I do would make him feel remotely bad about what happened to me.” Sakura sighed a bit, as she did her best to clean up the mess, not wanting to cause issues for the other girls. Her eyes moved back to him,
“You would go with me to do something like that? I-i don’t want you to think ill of me for being so petty.” Sakura also wondered if he did this sort of thing for everyone. Surely she wasn’t that special. Though part of her wanted to be that special to him. She felt oddly bonded to him.

The strictly righteous path is so very hard to follow, full of regrets, grief, and self sacrifice. To what end? In the end, she is now forced to watch this? The repeat of something that happened before? Are celestials forbidden to kill? No. He witnessed them kill and kill and kill not just mortals but even each other. And they dare to say that they are better than demons. When it comes to killing, even a mouse is able to do it.
"Oh, the river of souls? A curious choice of place to be, indeed. Were you trying to deliver soul take it back, or maybe offer your own? No need to go that far, you could just come to Ghost City. I could gladly rid you of your body and turn you into a free soul. " He grins not turning around. "This way"
The scent presence of that wandering soul was getting stronger he could basically taste it. Till he saw it, a small blue flame dancing just above the river bed. "There you are." He whispers more to himself. Slowly he turns to her....
"You turned your wedding into red literally. So you regret it? Do you feel grief? Is that why you got pulled into this trap? Can it be that grief is the trigger? Or rage? Human emotions...connected with the loss of a loved one?"
He points with his pale hand to the direction of the river. "There is your soul, weak and confused dancing over the calm river surface"
It was the thought that counted, really, she wondered what kind of screw ups she’d made in her lives to end up here, with him being the one caring but…she knew exactly what fuck ups she had made. Swallowing the lump in her throat, Jinmi focused on the steps she had to take forward, eyes focused on silver butterflies. It was a more beautiful picture than the ones she had been remembering in her mind. While she tried to leave it behind, to remind herself that every step forward was a step she was never going to have to take again, it didn’t help. Like anything else including her resolve to move on, the light didn’t seem to last long, was that just a constant in the universe?
What had she been doing? Pausing for a moment, Jinmi thought back through her mind, “I was…” oh that was going to be hard to explain. “At the river of souls.” Well, she threw that out there as casually as she could muster. It was personal, or rather, she’d been wallowing in self pity trying to figure out how she was going to make things right.
Then, he managed to say something that made her stomach drop.
Was this her fault?
It might be.
Though selfishly she wasn’t sure if she could cope with that, wasn’t the guilt of one dead bad enough to live with, now she had to worry about all of this? “It’s…eerily close to…” something that had happened? That she had caused.
“I killed someone…” by accident, or out of grief and anger, whatever her reasons none of them felt justifiable. “At my wedding…”
