They paint a picture of regular gifts expected by Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, in exchange for favours. One such favour includes a marginal tax break extension that benefited Milchan. Netanyahu argues his unusual interference regarding the tax break was for the good of the state, not Milchan. Meanwhile, the LA Confidential producer corroborated much of the witness testimony, though, in one excerpt, he gently asks police not to use the word “bribery” because it would make him look bad.

Award season: Hollywood producers vs the rest of the Academy

It's very, very interesting to compare the recently announced Producers Guid of America Award nominations for best documentary (announced on 10 December) with the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature (voted for by the documentary branch of the Academy).

It's startling that they only overlap in one film - Porcelain War (which is about artists in Ukraine during the war). But he Producers Guild has 3 non-political documentaries, a film about a released former captive of ISIS, and, what's particularly interesting, We Will Dance Again, Israeli documentary described as a retelling of the 7 October attack - while snubbing No Other Land, which has won a major award at the Berlin film festival and almost every critics award so far and has been nominated everywhere else, but still has no US distribution.

The Oscar shortlist does include No Other Land, as expected, and it also includes, among others, another documentary that's still without US distribution, Union, about Amazon workers unionizing and fighting for their rights; Black Box Diaries, a Japanese Me-Too themed documentary about a woman fighting to get justice after getting raped by a powerful man; Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat, about jazz, racial issues and colonialism and how CIA caused the civil war in Congo and assassinated Patrice Lumumba at President Eisenhower's order; and the new US-produced documentary about Netanyahu's corruption trial, The Bibi Files. (As usual, celebrity themed documentaries are mostly ignored, but the one exception, Will and Harper, deals with friendship and trans issues.)

And while No Other Land's inclusion in the Documentary Feature shortlist was expected, two other Palestinian films are also on two of the Oscar shortlists that all members of the Academy vote for: From Ground Zero, official Palestinian entry, a collection of short documentaries from Gaza, is on the International Feature shortlist, while An Orange from Jaffa made it to the Live Action Short shortlist.

I'd say these appear to show a pretty clear divide between the producers and the rest of the industry.
