Henderson, July 1950

Boulder Hwy intersects with E Lake Mead Blvd. The World War II company town was built around Basic Magnesium Industries plant, left. Carver Park, built for black workers, northeast of the intersection. Victory Village, built for white workers, east of the intersection. Henderson Townsite, south.

Carver Park was designed by black architect Paul Revere Williams. The pronounced segregation was the first of its kind in the region. Despite the separation of housing children attended the same school.

Henderson's transition from a temporary industrial town to permanent community was guaranteed in the late 40s when Senator C.D. Baker introduced legislation that allowed workers to purchase their housing outright instead of renting it from the company. Portions of the company's campus was leased or sold to other businesses. Three years later, Basic Management Inc., a private company organized by the state to manage the plant, purchased the plant outright from the state, privatizing the remainder of the operation.

Henderson was incorporated as a city on 4/16/53, absorbing Carver Park, Victory Village and Pittman.
